Fall Family Time
T
he summer of 2015 is slowly coming to an end. Summer vacations are fading into memory and the kids are settling into their school routines. With football season kicking into high gear, our lives are slowly returning to “normal.” While our afternoons and evenings may seem to be a blur of racing to and from afterschool activities, sports practices and music lessons, let’s not forget that the fall season in Florida has plenty to offer for family fun. The sun is not quite so scorching hot, and the ocean waters are still warm and beautiful. So put down the tablet, switch off the game console, and get out there and enjoy the soothing surf, take an airboat tour through the Everglades, or simply make time for a movie matinee. Whatever you choose to do, do it with family and friends. Our hectic lives force us to spend time separated from loved ones for most of the day, either at work or school, so make sure you make the time to enjoy each other’s company whenever you can.

Town of Davie Participates in #SaferBy4 Campaign Community News
By Debby Teich
E
very year, young children lose their lives in the water or while sleeping. The Town of Davie is participating in the #SaferBy4 Campaign to reduce these preventable child deaths by informing and educating families and care givers about water safety (drowning prevention) and safe sleep practices for infants. The campaign was designed to help children reach their fourth birthday.
Safe Sleep
In the last five years in Broward County, the most preventable cause of death of children under one year of age was from an unsafe sleep environment. Florida Department of Children and Families offers the following tips to prevent accidental sleep-related deaths: ▸▸ Make sure the baby’s crib meets Consumer Product Safety Commission standards. ▸▸ The mattress should be firm and fit snuggly in the crib’s frame. ▸▸ Place baby on his/her back to sleep in order to reduce the risk of suffocation. ▸▸ Keep baby’s sleep area clear of strings, cords and wires. ▸▸ Give your baby a pacifier (never a bottle) when he or she goes to sleep. ▸▸ Although they may look cute, pillows, blankets, bumper pads and toys can suffocate your infant. ▸▸ Despite popular belief, sleep aids such as wedges and sleep positioners can increase the risk of infant death due to suffocation. ▸▸ Sleeping with your infant may be more convenient and look peaceful, but the risk of an adult rolling onto or pinning the baby and killing the infant by suffocation increases immensely through co-sleep.
et Japanese Buff
Drowning
Broward County has one of the highest rates of drowning fatalities among children ages 1 to 4 each year. Drowning occurs in as little as two minutes. A child can enter a pool in the time it takes a caregiver to answer the phone or start a load of laundry. Most children who die from a drowning were never intended to be in the water . . . they wandered away from a supervised area to enter water alone. The #SaferBy4 Campaign offers the following tips: ▸▸ Layers of supervision: Assign a “water watcher” to ensure that a responsible adult is supervising the child in the pool. ▸▸ Barriers: Children should never have accessibility to water without being accompanied by an adult. Have several barriers (in case one fails) to physically block a child from a pool. Barriers include door alarms, pool fences, self‐latching gates, child proof locks and pool covers. ▸▸ Emergency Response: Early activation of EMS, CPR and Rescue Breathing can mean the difference between life and death. Keep a phone by the pool and learn CPR and Rescue Breathing. ▸▸ Swim Classes: Town of Davie offers Mommy and Me swim classes for children six months to three years of age. Classes are to help young children get ready to swim and for water safety. They emphasize fun in the water and elementary swimming skills. Preschool Swim Classes are for children ages 3 to 5 years old. Children learn water safety, survival skills, and foundational swimming concepts in a safe environment. For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov.

Cooper City Promotes Intergenerational Fun Community News
By Debby Teich
2014 Grandparents Day and Mom/Son Night of Fun.
T
he City of Cooper City has several events throughout the year to promote positive family relationships. On September 13, from 2pm to 4pm, Cooper City residents will celebrate their grandparents, and on September 18, from 6:30pm to 9:30pm, moms and sons will gather for the Mother and Son Night of Fun.
Grandparents Day
On the same day that the nation celebrates Grandparents Day, Cooper City grandparents and their grandchildren will gather for their own special event at the Cooper City Pool and Tennis Center. Since 2007, it has been a tradition for many Cooper City families. “It is wonderful way for grandkids and their grandparents to spend quality time together,” said Annie Boyle, Recreation Program Specialist for the City of Cooper City Recreation Department. The cost is $4 per person. Either the grandparent or grandchild, age 4 and up, must be a Cooper City resident. Participants will engage in fun games with their grandchild/grandparent, take home a souvenir picture, and enjoy an old fashioned ice cream party. At 4 pm, participants can continue the fun in the facilties game room or the pool, all at no additional charge. Advanced tickets are required and available at the Cooper City Pool and Tennis Center or the Cooper City Community Center. Tickets will not be available the day of the event.
Mom/Son Night of Fun
Since 2002, Cooper City moms and their sons have been gathering for the
Mother and Son Night of Fun. This hometown event has been a way for moms and their sons, K – 5th grade, to enjoy a special evening together. Many of them return year after year. Approximately 80 mothers and sons are expected to attend. They will rotate around to different game and activity stations that will each have a “race car party” theme. In addition, a DJ will lead games and play music for dancing. The event also includes dinner. “This event provides a great opportunity for mothers and sons to bond through a variety of fun activities and a bit of friendly competition,” said Boyle. “As children become older and want their independence, it is especially important to build special and lasting memories while they’re young.” Tickets for the Mother and Son Night of Fun are $12 per person and must be purchased in advance at the Cooper City Community Center on 90th Avenue. No tickets will be sold at the door. The event is limited to Cooper City residents only. On November 13, from 6:30pm – 9:30pm, Cooper City dads will have their turn at the Annual Daddy Daughter Dinner Dance. The event, for ages 2nd grade and up, includes dinner, dancing and themed entertainment. If dad is unavailable, grandfathers, step-dads, and uncles are always welcome. The event is limited to Cooper City residents. Tickets will be available on October 7. For information, visit www.coopercityfl.org or call 954-434-4300, ext. 233.

pening its doors in April of 2009, Davie Discount Liquors & Wine with the efforts of its owner Shiv Waghray and his various suppliers has amassed a respectable and eclectic wine department. Covering all major wine producing Countries with their respectable brands and varietals, including a kosher wine selection, Shiv strives to bring his customers the best that the wine world has to offer.
One other very important characteristic of this friendly, full service liquor and wine store is, if they don’t have it they will try very hard to get it for you so don’t be afraid to ask. One of the most impressive attributes in Davie Discounts wine department is their Cabernet Sauvignon selection. Cabernet Sauvignon is arguably the most popular red wine grape in the world today. Hailing from its homeland of France, specifically The Bordeaux Medoc/ Graves region, this varietal has also blossomed in Chile, Argentina, Australia, Washington State and Northern California its second home, Napa Valley and Sonoma County in particular. With careful winemaking and barrel ageing, Cabernet Sauvignon can produce some of the longest-living and most intriguing reds of all. Cabernet can be made in a softer style, but all the great Cabernet of the world generally requires some additional bottle-ageing to reach their peak. Big, rich and full-bodied in their youth, the tannins soften with age, usually five to eight years after vintage, although some legendary vintages can age gracefully for decades. Some common aroma and flavor descriptors or this varietal are black currant or cassis, blackberry, cedar, tobacco, mint, chocolate, black olive, black cherry and plum. Food pairing with this varietal includes Strong cheese, game, beef, ham, lamb and hearty salads. For best results Cabernet should be stored in 55 degrees and served between 63 to 68 degrees. Shiv has accumulated over 130 types of American Cabernets with an estimated 80% of those being from California. Whether you’re looking for an everyday wine or a special occasion bottle Davie Discount has wines ranging from $5.99 for a very drinkable budget wine in Rex Goliath Cabernet to the bold and amazing Rubicon Estate Cabernet at $179.99. The 2007 to 2013 California Cabernet vintages have produced high quality, spectacular wines. However, 2007 Cabernets especially from Napa Valley and Sonoma County reached new heights of quality. According to Wine Spectator, “More great Cabernets were made in Napa in 2007 than any other time or place in California history”. In honor of that spectacular vintage Davie Discount has selected some amazing wines from Napa as well as other notable regions for you to purchase, try and enjoy:

Florida Medical Center Brings High Level Emergency Care to South Broward County feature story
The 13,626-square-foot center houses 11 treatment rooms on the first floor. Each of the rooms is named after a particular community in the area, further reinforcing the center’s goal to provide neighborhood-centered care. The second floor of the building houses the Imaging Center of West Broward, an expansion of the center in Sunrise, which will offer CAT scans and coronary computed tomography angiograms (CTAs). Patients also have the option of holding their place in line at the Emergency Center by going to www.ERcare247.com and signing in through a service called InQuickER. This gives them the ability to wait in the comfort of their homes and visit the center at a scheduled time. “InQuickER benefits patients tremendously by giving them the convenience of waiting to see a medical professional from any location,” explains Dr. Isaacson. “It also bolsters communication between the patients and staff and allows the ER to operate more efficiently.” For over 40 years, Florida Medical Center has provided high quality care for the community. Last year, the hospital was named among the top 10% in nation for cardiology services by Healthgrades, received the highest distinction for stroke care from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get with the Guidelines Quality Achievement Award, and was credited with performing several industry-leading procedures, some of which were the first of their kind in the area. Additionally, for the second consecutive year, Florida Medical Center earned an “A” in The Leapfrog Group’s Spring 2015 Hospital Safety Score. The organizations assigned more than 2,500 hospitals with an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” score based on their performance in keeping patients safe from preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections.
T
he future of emergency care has arrived in South Broward County with the recent opening of Florida Medical Center’s first freestanding Emergency Center. Residents of Davie and the surrounding communities now have a comfortable and convenient place to go for their emergency care needs – 24/7, 365 days a year. The Emergency Center is located at 10230 W. State Road 84 in The new Emergency Center, just south of I-595 and west of Nob Hill Road, is Davie. The question often comes up whether to go to an urgent care clinic (if it’s open) or a hospital-based emergency room. Now there’s an alternative option. The Emergency Center is fully equipped and staffed to treat emergent conditions, such as lacerations, orthopedic and sports injuries, dehydration, abdominal pain, respiratory problems, head injuries, walk-in strokes and chest pain. Open 24/7, the center offers the high quality care of a hospital-based ER in a comfortable atmosphere and in a convenient location. Patients have access to board certified emergency medicine physicians and registered nurses on Florida Medical Center’s medical staff. “We’re working closely with Emergency Medical Services to provide the area with a new type of emergency care,” said Finley-Hazle. “If you or a loved one is ever in need of emergency services, you can trust that our highly skilled clinicians are here to provide you with excellent medical care with the utmost compassion and respect.” Non-Acute Walk-in Pediatric Care varies In addition the Emergency Center will offer the following ▸▸ Adult and walk- in pediatric care ▸▸ Ambulance access ▸▸ Laboratory and pharmacy services ▸▸ Outpatient diagnostics, including advanced CT scan, X-ray and ultrasound imaging ▸▸ Respiratory care “It is an exciting opportunity for us to bring the care we offer at Florida Medical Center to the city of Davie and nearby communities,” said Dr. Louis Isaacson, emergency room physician. “We understand the importance of time and convenience for busy families. Our new center enhances access to quality emergent medical care provided by some of the same physicians you would find at our hospital-based ER.” EC Comparison Booklet_FMC.in

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 9/30/15) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs Are Not Always the Best Option By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette
E
very year, millions of prescriptions are written for patients suffering from high cholesterol. Doctors quickly recommend patients take cholesterol-lowering drugs, known as statins, in hopes of preventing a possible heart attack. Here lies the problem with traditional medicine. In addition to side effects that one may suffer after taking these drugs, the bad cholesterol (LDL) levels may decrease on subsequent lab work, giving a false sense of security. What appears to heavily impact the risk of heart disease is the particle size of the LDL. The larger the number of small particles of LDL, the more hazardous they are to your health. These drugs (statins) typically do not impact the particle size. Therefore, the risk of heart disease still remains even though the LDL is lowered. These small particles will be easily able to pass through the vessel junctions and cause build up of plaque. Lowering cholesterol through the use of prescription drugs is not a quick solution to an ailment that needs to be researched further. Moreover, Functional Medicine will not only evaluate the particle size of the bad cholesterol, but also offer natural supplements that will increase the LDL, thus decreasing your risk of heart disease. Did you know that while helping you lower cholesterol levels, statins could also put you at risk for Type 2 diabetes? Clinical studies have shown a link between drugs, such as Lipitor and Crestor, and the development of Type 2 diabetes. Post-menopausal women are at heightened risk. Diabetes occurs when the body can’t produce or use insulin—a hormone needed to convert food into energy. If the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin or if cells do not respond appropriately to insulin, blood sugar levels in the blood get too high. This can lead to serious health problems. Scientists believe these drugs can affect the function of cells that store and release insulin, as well as decrease the body’s sensitivity to this hormone. Liver injury, neurological problems and muscle pain are also side effects. In 2014, the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety advisory about these findings. But this doesn’t mean that high cholesterol should go untreated. It is a serious condition that affects over 70 million Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At a Functional Medicine practice, we don’t only look at total cholesterol. We conduct specialized testing to learn more about the size and content of the cholesterol particles to help the patient combat the disease in the most efficient way. We also look at other important factors, such as family history, and most importantly, lifestyle. This serious condition is then treated through a combination of vitamins, natural foods and a change in the patient’s lifestyle. While prescription medication temporarily hides symptoms, Functional Medicine offers a comprehensive approach that will restore your health and vitality without the negative side effects. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. Davie–Cooper City Rotary Club Installs New President By Debby Teich
D
arrell A. Stuehrenberg was recently installed as president of the DavieCooper City Rotary Club for the 2015-2016 Rotary year. He joined the club a year after arriving in Davie to serve as the pastor of the local Lutheran church, where he served for 33 years. He has been a member of the Davie- Cooper City Rotary Club for the past 38 years. “Several folks encouraged me to have some participation in my local community, other than just church related contacts,” said Stuehrenberg. “The Rotary Club was a perfect answer to this suggestion. Over these 38 years, I have learned Darrell A. Stuehrenberg much about the people, leaders, and qualities of both Davie and Cooper City by knowing fellow Rotarians. This is a group of my friends. When we welcome new members, they become my new friends.” Rotary, which has 1.2 million members worldwide, is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. The Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club was established in 1971. It currently has 25 members, many of whom have been in the club for over 20 years. They live in Davie, Cooper City and the surrounding areas. The club meets on Wednesdays, at 12:15pm, at the Blue Moon Diner in Cooper City, and welcomes visitors. Most of the meetings include a guest speaker from a community business or charitable organization. Outside of the meetings, members have an opportunity to attend social events with their own members, as well as those in other Rotary clubs in the area. On October 4, for example, the four southern Broward Rotary Clubs will meet for a covered dish social. Members also participate in a variety of community service activities, including Davie’s Orange Blossom Festival, Parade and Rodeo, and Cooper City’s Founder’s

Day Festival. In December, the club sponsors a Children’s Holiday Party. They invite approximately 120 disadvantaged children and school staff members from 12 local schools to the Signature Grand for an event complete with Santa, Disney characters, lunch, music and dancing. Each child receives an age appropriate gift. In February, they sponsor a “Horse Tales” reading event at the Bergeron Rodeo arena in Davie. Approximately 300 first graders from three local schools gather to learn about horses and read them a book. Prior to the event, members of the Rotary Club bring each child a book, so they can practice reading it. “Rotary is an excellent civic organization that impacts the local community and the world,” said Stuehrenberg. “It’s a great way to interact with fellow professionals and business leaders in your area. The best way to check out Rotary is to visit a local Rotary Club.” For information, visit www.daviecoopercity.rotary-clubs.org, call 954-868-8222 or send an email to das4851@yahoo.com.

Lions Club Organizes Back-to-School Event in Davie Community News
By Debby Teich
M
embers of Lions Club International wanted to make sure that hundreds of underprivileged children were ready for school. After raising $40,000, the club sent them on a back-toschool shopping spree to purchase supplies and uniforms at nine different Wal-marts, including the Davie location, 4301 South University Drive. This the ninth year the Lions Club has held the event. Social workers selected 100 underprivileged children from the ten elementary schools closest to the Davie Wal-mart. A large group volunteers shopped with the kids, including Town of Davie Mayor Judy Paul; Town of Davie Vice Mayor Susan Starkey and Lions Club president Jim Silvernale. There were also volunteers from PAL (Police Athletic League), Davie Police Department, Davie Cadets, Davie Fire Department, Landmark Bank, Lions Club, Nova Southeastern University, Cooper City High school and more. As parents checked in with their children, they were given a shopping wish list, books donated by Read Conmingo, and a raffle ticket to win a computer. While the parents enjoyed refreshments, each volunteer shopped with one child to help them spend a $50 gift card on supplies. Outside the store, the children received free giveaways from Magic 102.7, ID cards from the Davie Police Department, fire truck tours from the Davie Fire Department and free eye checkups from Wal-mart. Two lucky children also won

computers from a raffle. “The event teaches the children how to budget with $50 to buy their supplies and uniforms,” said Carmen Camacho, event chair. “They also get to experience shopping by themselves without having their parents there.” The Lions Club motto is “We Serve.” The back-to-school event is one of many ways that the Lions Club gives back to the community. In the past year, some other activities have included an Armed Forces Day BBQ, Car Show for the Scholarship Fund, Spina Bifida holiday party for the kids with disabilities, eye glass collection for children who cannot afford them, and more. “The Dania Lions Club is a very active organization and continues to serve the community where there is a need,” said Camacho. “It takes a special kind of person to be a member of our organization. It comes from the heart.”

A new chapter in cancer care is here.
The latest options in prostate cancer treatment. Improvements in the effectiveness of prostate cancer treatments are changing the outlook for men diagnosed with the cancer for the better. Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in men, Barbara Ercole, MD and the second leading cause Urologist of cancer death among men in the United States. One in seven men is likely to be diagnosed in their lifetime; most cases are found in men over age 65. Today’s prostate cancer treatments include surgery, radiation and drugs that slow cancer cell growth. The safety and effectiveness of these treatments are steadily improving. “Each treatment has its own benefits and risks, and choosing the right approach can be complicated,” says Barbara Ercole, MD, a urologist at Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston. “Narrowing treatment options depends on several factors, which include the stage of the cancer and patient comorbidities and preferences.” In some cases, no treatment might be the most appropriate first step. Called “active surveillance,” this strategy allows men with early-stage or very slowgrowing prostate cancer to avoid treatment and its side effects. The patient’s cancer is regularly monitored so that action can be taken if the cancer grows or spreads.
The Maroone Cancer Center is the first hospital-based facility in the southeastern United States to install and operate the most advanced nonsurgical technology to break down tumors. This revolutionary, noninvasive approach using external beam radiotherapy improves accuracy, safety and recovery time. Learn how our holistic approach is helping more patients survive cancer.

Radiation therapy is a treatment option that kills cancer cells and shrinks tumors. Radiation can be produced from a machine outside the body (external radiation) or by putting materials (often referred to as radiation “seeds”) that produce radiation into the area where the cancer cells are found (internal radiation or brachytherapy). One of the most common surgical treatments for prostate cancer is radical prostatectomy, which involves the removal of the entire prostate. This can be done through an incision in the lower abdomen (open approach), or using robot-assisted surgery. Robotic prostatectomy is a type of minimally invasive surgery that uses robotic equipment and allows surgeons to operate through small ports rather than large incisions. “Unlike many cancers, prostate cancer usually allows the patient a significant window of time to consider their options,” says Dr. Ercole. “Make sure you understand all of the information before you and your physician agree on a course of treatment.”

Davie/Cooper City Felines Get Free Sterilization community news
By Debby Teich

ittens make a cute pet. Unfortunately, however, they are often abandoned once they grow older. The Humane Society of Broward County and Broward County Animal Care & Adoption are teaming up for “Mission Catpossible,” a collaborative spay/neuter project for felines to reduce the number of unwanted cats. Davie/Cooper City residents who live in certain zip codes are now eligible to have their cats sterilized for free. These zip codes include: 33314, 33317, 33324, 33024 and 33325. The program also includes zip codes in other cities: 33009, 33021, 33023, 33025, 33060, and 33315. Proof of residency is required. According to Christopher Agostino, President/CEO of the Humane Society of Broward County, the HSBC currently provides low cost spay/neuter to nearly 12,000 pets that have homes, and for feral and free roaming cats each year. This is in addition to spaying/neutering more than 8,000 animals that are placed through the shelter’s adoption program. “Our goal is to sterilize an additional 4,000 felines in the next 12 months,” said Agostino. Anyone interested should make an appointment. The procedure is performed on the HSBC mobile unit seven days a week. Vaccinations, microchipping and testing are available for a fee. Carole Himmel, who lives in the 33317 zip code area, is planning to call HSBC. “My friend gave me a free cat, but I have not had the time or money to get it neutered,” said Himmel. “I will definitely take advantage of the free service.” The HSBC is a private, non-profit organization supported by donations from people and companies who want to help the animals. The shelter receives no government funding and is not affiliated with any local or national organization with a similar name. Broward County Animal Care and Adoption is dedicated to
providing shelter for lost and homeless animals. The agency provides access to hundreds of shelter pets hoping for a new home.
The Humane Society of Broward County is located at 2070 Griffin Road, just a block west of I-95. To schedule an appointment, call 954-463-SPAY (7729) or send an email to spayneuter@hsbroward.com. For information, visit www.humanebroward.com.

To celebrate its service to the community, this fall Memorial Hospital Pembroke will create a Memorial Fitness Zone at Brian Piccolo Sports Park & Velodrome, 9501 Sheridan Street, Hollywood. The zone will feature outdoor equipment that can be used free of charge – as a warm-up or cool-down to an exercise routine, or as its own fitness regimen – by exercisers age 14 and older. The fitness zone will also be lit at night for those fitness fanatics who like to get their workouts in after dark. As a member of the Board of Commissioners of the South Broward Hospital District, I’m proud that Memorial Hospital Pembroke has cared for our community for 20 years – and that, through leading-edge services and innovative programs like the new Memorial Fitness Zone, Memorial Hospital Pembroke will keep contributing to the health and well-being of Broward patients and families in the decades to come.
Poster/Essay Contest Encourages Students to Place Smoke Alarms in Bedrooms School News

ccording to the National Fire Protection Association, half of all U.S. home fire deaths occur at night between the hours of 11pm and 7am, when people are most likely to be sleeping. Having a working smoke alarm in the home cuts the risk of dying in a fire in half. This month, many elementary school students throughout Davie will be learning about the importance of smoke alarms in the bedroom, as they compete in the Town of Davie Fire Rescue/Fire Prevention Bureau’s 19th Annual Fire Prevention Week Essay/Poster Contest. This year’s theme is “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep: Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm.” The deadline to enter is September 28. “The contest is designed to contribute to the education of our children and their families, as well as our local merchants,” said Betty Daly-Hilsman, program. “Our program helps students and their families gain a better understanding of how to prevent fires, the dangers of fire, and have the skills to know how to escape from their homes or any other location where a fire has ignited. It also encourages them to make sure they have smoke alarms in their homes.” Daly-Hilsman says that every bedroom and level of the home, including the basement, should have a smoke alarm. These smoke alarms should be tested once a month and replaced one to two times a year. She also encourages families to have an escape plan. “It is essential for families to create an escape plan for their family should a fire break out in their home,” said Daly-Hilsman. “The plan should include where their

family should meet outside their homes to assure that all family members and pets are accounted for.” At participating elementary schools, students in grades K-3 will create posters, while those in grades 4-5 will write essays. According to the rules, all of the work must reflect this year’s theme and cannot be larger than 12” X 12.” Teachers will select one winner from each grade level. On October 6, approximately 50 to 60 students will be honored for their winning entries at an awards ceremony at the Pine Island Multipurpose Center, where their work will be on display. The students will receive trophies, backpacks, certificates, t-shirts, fire prevention and safety items, and information. The Town Administrator, Mayor, Town Council, Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, and other Fire Department officials are typically invited to attend the event, which is hosted by Fire Marshal Robert Taylor. “The students are so proud when they see their entries displayed at the awards ceremony,” said Daly-Hilsman. During the month of October, in observance of Fire Prevention Week, members of the Fire Prevention department will also be visiting schools to provide fire and safety and prevention demonstrations. Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. For information on the Town of Davie’s Annual Essay & Poster Contest, call Betty Daly-Hilsman at 954-797-1229.

am proud to introduce our two newest police recruits. I was honored to be the guest speaker at the 296th graduation at the Police Academy and to stand with Dean Linda Wood as we congratulated the class and presented honors to our new Davie officers. Officer Fernandez of the 296 Police Academy won the Highest Academic proficiency award. During the course of the academy, Officer Fernandez took 18 written exams over the 770 hour academy. He maintained a 96%, earning him the highest average in the class. Considering there is a 62 hour block in legal, this was a wonderful accomplishment. He is definitely a role model for others. Officer Green won the prestigious Honor Medallion for the 296th Police Academy. This award is based on the cadet’s leadership skills displayed in the classroom, physical skills, and demonstrated positive work ethic. It is based on overall performance, a can-do attitude and a desire to always give 100%. This award is so special, because it is voted on by staff, instructors and classmates. Congratulations and I know you will bring honor and distinction to the Davie Police Department.

I am pleased to announce that it has been a great year for our boxers here at the Davie Police Athletic League. In April, Javaune James and Teofimo Lopez represented us at the State Golden Gloves Championships. They both fought exceptionally well. They competed in four fights over four days, where they both won and became State Golden Glove Champions. They advanced to Nationals in Las Vegas in May, where they again performed exceptionally. Teofimo fought five fights over five days and won all his fights by unanimous decision, making him the National Golden Glove Champion in the Lightweight Division. Javaune made it to the Quarter Finals, where he is in the top eight in the nation in the Welterweight Division. Teofimo and Javaune both headed to the Olympic Qualifier in Colorado Springs in June. Also in May, Xander Zayas competed in the Southeast Coast Regional Junior Olympic Boxing Tournament in Macon, Georgia. Xander was able to win his fights and took home the Regional Championship. Xander competed in the National Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs in June. We are very pleased at all the hard work our boxers and our team have been putting in over this last year and I think it shows in their accomplishments. We want to thank the coaches and volunteers for all of their time and commitment that they have shown these young men in helping them achieve their goals. We also want to thank all of our sponsors, the Davie Police Department, and the Town of Davie for their support. We look forward to seeing what these young men can do in the years to come. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at 954-797-1030 or email me at jpaul@davie-fl.gov.

hurches, temples, religious schools and other religious institutions are vital to our community, yet they also face special security risks. By their very welcoming and spiritual nature, places to worship are typically open long hours every day – and sometimes around the clock. This open-door nature of houses of worship can make them especially vulnerable to individuals who are fueled by hate, or suffering from mental illness, and who are seeking to inflict harm. Case in point was the horrific racist terror attack in June on the church in Charleston, South Carolina that left nine people dead at an evening Bible study class. As sheriff, the safety of our community is my primary concern. I want to ensure your protection from harm in all of your daily activities, whether it is going to work, to school or to worship.
This is not a new concern for me. In recent years, because of a few antiSemitic incidents in South Florida, the Broward Sheriff’s Office conducted a “Keeping Your Jewish Institutions Safe” conference to prepare synagogues to address safety concerns during the high holy days. Simultaneously, our BSO Community Outreach team and our Chaplain’s Office were also essential in building stronger ties between our agency and Broward’s many diverse religious groups. Many faith communities in Broward – Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu – have remarked that trust between BSO and their congregations has grown incredibly. In the aftermath of the Charleston attacks, we are expanding our security conference this year to include religious institutions of all faiths to discuss their concerns and how, working together, we can bring people together. This is what I like to call “Uniting Broward”: to share ideas to make our community safer. Our religious community can learn a lot from us about how they can better protect their institutions and congregations. Among items that make a difference: improving lines of sight by keeping hedges and bushes trimmed low to remove potential blind spots, ensuring outdoor lighting illuminates all entrances to the institution to discourage intruders and adding security cameras to deter potential acts of vandalism or even terrorism. Most importantly is the concept of simply being alert: if you SEE SOMETHING unusual, SAY SOMETHING, so it can be promptly reported to law enforcement. If anything seems out of the ordinary, make it your responsibility to share that information. Only by sharing vital pieces of information can steps be taken to avert potentially dangerous situations. To learn more, or to schedule a security inspection and review at your place of worship, please contact the Broward Sheriff’s Office at 954-321-4717.

hat does your personal oral care have to do with your newborn? More than you think.... Unaware of its importance, many women avoid regular dental care during and immediately after pregnancy. In addition, uneducated dentists may not stress its importance and may even be less willing to provide certain services during pregnancy. This is very unfortunate for there are definite implications of poor oral health in pregnant women, for their pregnancies, as well as for their children. Multiple studies have shown links between periodontal disease (infection of the gums and bones supporting the teeth) and adverse outcomes in pregnancy, including preterm deliveries, low birth weight babies, and preeclampsia. Children born to mothers with poor oral hygiene and high levels of certain oral bacteria have a significantly higher risk of developing cavities at an early age. This may be one of the causative factors in a child’s development of a condition called early childhood caries or ECC. ECC is a complicated situation in which cavities occur rampantly at an age in which needed care may be difficult to deliver. Fortunately, most of the causes of both cavities and ECC are preventable. Cavities are caused in large part by having high levels of certain oral bacteria. Although children are not born with these cavity causing bacteria, they are eventually transferred by caregivers to children. This can occur, for example, by blowing on a hot spoon of cereal. It is not natural, or possible, to forever eliminate these bacteria. However, the longer it takes to transfer, the more it decreases the risk of cavities, in general, and ECC, specifically. This can be accomplished by eliminating cavities in the mouths of mothers (and all caregivers for that matter) and reducing the amount of plaque through regular dental checkups, cleaning and application of topical fluoride (in toothpaste and rinse). It would be easiest to complete all dental work prior to pregnancy. However, it is important to keep in mind that most dental procedures can be accomplished during pregnancy. The safest and most comfortable time to accomplish dental work during pregnancy is the second trimester. We recommend using this time not only to receive services, but also to obtain tips for oral care for mother and baby. There are many special circumstances during pregnancy. For example, nausea and vomiting can create some difficulty in controlling the acid levels in the mouth, which can increase the risks of both enamel erosion, as well as cavities in the mother. You would be surprised at the creative strategies which can be used to overcome many of these challenges. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Road, on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Road. For information or to schedule an appointment, call (954) 236-3434

o you find yourself confused by the media regarding our local Real Estate market? Here are a few stats about Broward County (according to RAGFL).
Broward County
Closed sales for existing single-family homes rose slightly by 0.8% to 778 from 772 in May 2014, while the total number of closed sales for existing townhomes/condominiums decreased by 9.4% to 828 from 914 last May. The rising trend of median sale prices for both single-family homes and townhouses/condominiums continued in May versus one year ago. The median sale price for single-family homes is up 0.7% (from $295,000 in May 2014 to $297,000 in May 2015), while townhomes/condominiums are up by a much larger margin, an increase of 8.9% (from $124,000 to $135,000), respectively. The number of new listings fell in May 2015. This was only the third such month in the past calendar year. May 2015 was down 3.4% in single-family homes (1,367 to 1,320) and down 14.1% in townhouses/condominiums (1,481 to 1,272), bringing the months’ supply of inventory from 5.7 to 5.8 for townhomes/ condominiums. May 2015 remained constant in single-family homes at 4.8. New pending sales for Broward County saw more mixed results, rising by the tune of 2.2% in single-family homes (1,101 in May 2014 to 1,125 in May 2015) and dropping by 4.1% in townhomes/condominiums (1,111 in May 2014 to 1,066 in May 2015). T
here is a saying often used in family law, which is that “if you have children, you are never divorced.” I repeat that saying several times each week to both existing and new clients. Even after a divorce is finalized, there are still potential problems which may arise. If you have the opportunity to read a Final Judgment of Dissolution of Marriage, the Court will retain jurisdiction in the matter. That is to ensure that if issues arise, the parties have the legal right to petition the court for relief. There are some issues, however, which cannot be re-litigated. A large percentage of my practice is devoted to “post judgment matters,” such as child support, alimony, custody, visitation and parental relocation. All of the above matters can be addressed by the court if there is a failure to comply with an existing court order or if, due to a “substantial change in circumstance,” one of the parties is seeking a modification.
For instance, if the primary residential parent is not receiving his/her child support, then an enforcement action can be brought. If one of the parents loses his/her job through no fault of their own, then a modification to reduce either child support or alimony can be filed. If one of the parents is not allowing scheduled visitation or if due to a change in circumstance the visitation schedule must be changed, a modification proceeding can be filed. Of course, not every issue can be re-litigated. The equitable distribution of assets and debts is a matter which cannot be disturbed after the Final Judgment, unless the parties themselves reach an agreement or one of the parties can prove fraud or coercion in the original agreement. In addition, child support cannot be increased unless the party seeking an increase can show a substantial change in income which would result in an increase of at least $50.00 per month or 15% over the existing monthly payment. Of course, one can never attempt to overturn an agreement simply because he/she has changed their minds and now feels it is perhaps unfair. I always try and tie up all lose ends when finalizing an agreement between the parties. The last thing either party wants is continued litigation, which means continued stress and continued attorney’s fees. Sometimes a matter can be resolved by the parties simply discussing the matter. I am always amazed at how often issues can be resolved by a simple phone call, letter or email. If both parties truly want what is best for their child, then a compromise should not be so difficult. Unfortunately, some parties wish to continue the litigation based upon emotional issues. This is never a good idea and, more often than not, it is the children who suffer. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

Jim Chambliss and his wife, Alyson, took a copy of Our City Davie to one of the smallest countries in the world. The beautiful country of Liechtenstein, on the border between Austria and Switzerland, has mountains, alpine meadows, and castles.
