Treat Your Loved Ones to Magical Memories this Halloween
O
ctober is one of my favorite months of the
year. Florida’s fabulous fall weather is starting, with nighttime temperatures cooling off and the humidity dropping a bit. We can finally get back to enjoying outdoor activities with our families and friends. At the end of the month is Halloween – a favorite holiday of children and kids at heart. What better way to spend some family time than searching for the perfect pumpkin in one of the area’s many pumpkin patches, then rolling up your sleeves to carve a jack-o-lantern? It’s the quintessential Halloween decoration. Soon our streets will be filled with pint-sized princesses and witches, villains and superheroes. Let’s all have some fun while watching our little ones (and big ones too!) roam the neighborhood dressed up as their favorite characters. Don’t forget to take lots of pictures, as these are the memories that will last a lifetime. Have a happy and safe Halloween everyone! Sincerely, Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Southwest Ranches Arts and Crafts Festival Offers Great Holiday Shopping By Debby Teich
W
ith the holidays approaching ,
many have already started shopping for those perfect gifts. Chances are you will find them at the 8th Annual Town of Southwest Ranches Country Roads Arts and Crafts Festival. The event will be held on October 18, from 10am to 4pm, at the Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park. With its diverse lineup of artists and crafters, the festival has something for everyone. “Our festival has become a local favorite for residents as well as visitors, who come from all over,” said December Lauretano-Haines, PROS Coordinator. “Our great venue is easy to get to. It is a quiet, country park with convenient amenities and the perfect atmosphere for the event. The artists and crafters set out a delightful collection of truly imaginative items—just in time for holiday shopping!” Approximately 50 vendors are expected to participate with items that are handmade or hand-embellished crafts and original art. They include paper arts, hand-crafted jewelry, specialty wood products, mosaics, paintings, children’s and students’ items, stained glass, holiday crafts, pet items and more. The Town of

Southwest Ranches will be providing musical entertainment for the event. There will also be plenty of food from vendors. Nancy Adler attended the festival last year with her family and looks forward to returning. “I did most of my holiday shopping at the festival,” said Adler. “It was also a great opportunity to catch up with neighbors, family and friends.” For those who have the creative bug, it is not too late to sign up to exhibit. If you love to sew, paint, knit, quilt, draw, throw pottery, or do some other type of handiwork and have items to sell to the public, the festival is a great place to do it. Available booth sizes include: 10 x 10 ($50), 10 x 20 ($100) and 10 x 30 ($150). Since the number of arts/craft venders is not limited, there is still plenty of space available. Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park is located at 5840 SW 148 Avenue. For information or an application, visit www.southwestranches.org or call 954-434-0008.

Davie to Celebrate Government Week By Debby Teich
W
hen Davie’ s Mayor , Councilmembers and staff make deci -
sions, they directly impact the people who live there. This month, Davie students will have an opportunity to learn what it takes to run their Town. They can tour Town Hall and may even get to visit with the Mayor and/or Councilmembers.
After school program students from Davie Christian Academy meet Mayor Judy Paul in her office during Davie Government Week last year.
It is all part of Government Week, which will be held from October 20 to 24. The Florida League of Cities, an association of member municipalities throughout Florida, is sponsoring “My city: I’m part of it; I’m proud of it.” The program is designed to educate school-aged children about their local government. “This opportunity gives the students the ability to learn early on about such things as how roads get fixed, how parks are maintained and how housing and business developments are approved,” said Phillip R. Holste, Development Administrator for the Town of Davie. “It also brings awareness to the variety of
jobs that local governments provide and encourages students to become interested in careers in Town government. The students are always surprised as to how many different employment opportunities there are.” Last year approximately 130 students attended throughout the week and organizers are expecting the same this year. Between the hours of 9:30am and 3:30pm, they will tour the Town Hall facility, where they can observe the Town staff performing their daily tasks. They will have the opportunity to interact with staff in areas, such as Administration; Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs; Budget and Finance; Human Resources; Town Clerk’s office; Planning and Zoning; Building; and Engineering. Fire engines, police and public works vehicles might also be available for the kids to see, since those departments are not located at Town Hall. Schools/groups that are interested should download an application at www. davie-fl.gov and submit it no later than October 10. Groups may not exceed 40 students per tour group and must adhere to school board standards, as it relates to the number of adults required to supervise children on field trips. Once registration is full, no other groups will be accepted. Holste says that it is important for every resident, not just students, to have a clear understanding of where their tax dollars go and how municipal government works. “We encourage community involvement in order for more residents to participate in the decisions that affect their homes, roads, business, education, and everyday lives,” said Holste. “Residents are encouraged to contact Town Departments or members of the Town Council with comments, questions, or concerns.” For information and applications, visit www.davie-fl.gov; go to the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts Department, 3801 S. Pine Island Road, or call 954-797-1163.

Weekely Brothers’ Pavilion, from 6pm-11pm. The evening will feature old-fashioned barbeque foods, a DJ, country music, line dancing, raffle items and more. Tickets are $75. All contributions are tax-deductible and directly benefit parks and open spaces in Southwest Ranches. “The parks foster our children’s connection to nature, provide critical habitat for wildlife, and increase home values,” said December Lauretano-Haines, Town Staff Liaison to the Foundation. “Whether you are a resident or a visitor, Southwest Ranches’ beautiful, tranquil open spaces are designed for you to enjoy.” The Aster Knight Parks Foundation is a nonprofit 501C3 organization dedicated to enhancing and supporting the development of and maintenance of the parks and open spaces within the Town of Southwest Ranches. The Foundation’s main focus is on fundraising and on partnering with the Town of Southwest Ranches to supply much needed funding to bring the Town’s parks concepts to reality. The Foundation has provided major support for park projects in Southwest Ranches, including Country Estates and Rolling Oaks Parks. Both are currently under construction and are expected to open in early 2015.
“The Foundation owes a debt of gratitude to our sponsors and supporters who have generously provided funding dedicated to the Foundation’s mission: enhancing parks and recreational spaces in Southwest Ranches for all who visit,” said LauretanoHaines. “We are inspired by the generosity of the businesses and individuals without whom our mission could not continue.” The Weekley Family Pavilion is located at 14600 Griffin Road, in Southwest Ranches. Schott Communities to Host 2014 Run, Walk & Roll By Debby Teich
M
any will never truly know what it
is like to live with a disability. On October 11, the community will have an opportunity to help support those who struggle with one on a daily basis by participating in the Schott Communities’ 2014 “Run, Walk & Roll.” The proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to help continue Schott
Communities’ mission – to create an environment of dignity and care where persons with physical and/ or mental challenges are encouraged to grow in selfacceptance and independence. More than 1,000 people are expected to participate in the timed 5K Run or the 1-mile Walk & Roll. The event will start on the campus of the Schott Communities, in Cooper City, and wind through Southwest Ranches on a USTAF certified course. Participants can visit with vendors and enjoy a complimentary breakfast. Andrew Almeida, Diego Zorrilla and Dave Shula will co-chair the event. Almeida is a young man who, though born with Cerebral Palsy, defied his doctor’s predictions that he would never walk or speak. Zorrilla, born with Spinal Bifida, has become a member of a wheelchair league. Shula is president of Shula’s Steakhouses, a former coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, and an avid runner. “We are so excited to continue to see this event grow with more spon-
sors and participants,” said Shula. “Some of these runners are dedicated athletes who take part in similar events throughout South Florida. At this event, they have a chance to meet some of the extraordinary individuals who benefit from Schott’s many programs.” Race day registration begins at 5:45am. The preregistration fee is $25 and race day registration is $30. There is a complimentary hot breakfast for all event registrants and $5 for all guests. Schott Communities is a private, nonprofit organization founded in 1986 to address the needs of persons who are physically or intellectually challenged. Each year, over 1,000 adults with special needs pass through its doors for help. Some of Scott’s programs and services include: Art from the Heart: An Art Therapy Program, a Daily Adult Day Program, Crafts Classes, Counseling Services, Family Support Groups, Religious Education, and Sacramental Preparation. It also offers a Saturday program. Schott Communities is located at 6591 South Flamingo Road, in Cooper City. For information, call 954-434-3306 or visit www. schottcommunities.org. Olympiad Games to Benefit Rebuilding Together Broward By Debby Teich

n O ctober 11, teams of co -workers , friends and families
will compete for the Golden Hard Hat trophy during the 8th Annual Olympiad Games. The event will be held at Bergeron Rodeo Grounds in Davie, from 11am to 4pm. Proceeds will benefit Rebuilding Together Broward. Rebuilding Together Broward County is a local affiliate of a nationwide nonprofit, which provides high quality renovations to families and homes in need. In Broward, the organization engages volunteers to perform home repairs, safety improvements, energy retrofits and neighborhood revitalization in an effort to assist low income homeowners who are elderly, disabled and veterans. “The Olympiad was created as a new and unique event, playing up the theme of using building materials and playing off the construction industry,” said Sandra Veszi Einhorn, Executive Director. “The idea of team building for this event dovetails nicely into our mission, which also engages people in a team building environment. Fundraisers are always more fun when there is friendly competition involved!” During the games, teams of four will compete in ten Olympiad-style, team building events. All of them have a construction theme, such as the Toilet Seat Toss (horseshoe with a toilet seat), Wheelbarrow Derby and Level, Plumb and True (PVC pipes must be put together in a strategic way), Hook Me Up (team members put on a harness 2013 winners from JWR Construction and hook up a bucket of water between participate in a competition.

Cooper City Teen Completes Project at Old Davie School Museum to Earn Eagle Scout By Debby teich
F
ifteen -year - old N icholas B lenker is on his way to sharing a
prestigious title with notables like Neil Armstrong, Michael Bloomberg, Gerald R. Ford, Bill Gates Sr., James A. Lovell Jr. and many others. The Cooper City High School student recently received his Eagle rank from Troop 183. Nicholas joined the Boy Scouts of America when he was in 1st grade and has been working his way toward becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the program. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges, as well as completing an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages. When it was time to select his project, Nicholas remembered an elementary school field trip he took to the Pioneer Village at the Old Davie School Historical Museum. He learned what life was like in the early 1900’s. He toured a replica of a one room house from 1909 and learned how the pioneers lived without electricity, shared one bed, used an outhouse, pumped their own water, sewed quilts, cooked on an open fire, and more. During a recent visit to the Pioneer Village, he discovered that the outside cooking area needed to be revitalized. For his Eagle Scout project, he decided to build a 9 foot X 3 foot retaining wall into the existing berm to encompass a 36 inch round fire pit. He also built two tables that could be used for food demonstrations. “I wanted to make it a better learning area for the students who visit,” said Nicholas. Nicholas developed a plan and got approval from his troop’s unit committee, the Old Davie School and the Boy Scout District Council. Next, he solicited donations from friends and family. He collected enough money to purchase the wood for the tables. Oldcastle Coastal donated the pavers, fire pit and any remaining materials. It took four days and the help of approximately 30 people to complete the project. Troop members, family and friends helped Nicholas build the retaining wall, fire pit and tables. They also dug the berm, cleared debris, and much more. “It was a complete transformation,” said Nicholas. “When you look at the photos side-by-side, it looks like a different area.” Leslie Schroeder, Executive Director for Old Davie School Museum, says that she is thrilled with the result. “Several times a year, including during the Orange Blossom Festival, volunteers dressed in Pioneer clothing use the fire pit area to cook pineapple upside down cake, bean soup, coffee, biscuits and other food for visitors,” said Schroeder. “Now the area is safer, more accessible and more convenient. Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts will also be able to use the fire pit for camp outs and sleepovers. Nicholas and his crew did a great job.” The Old Davie School Historical Museum is located at 6650 Griffin Road. For information, visit www.olddavieschool.org.

A
pproximately 25 million Americans suffer from Urinary Incontinence (accidentally leaking urine when you laugh, sneeze, cough or exercise) and of those nearly 80% are women. For many women this is a frustrating, even debilitating issue that requires inconvenient behavioral and activity modifications. While invasive surgery is an option for most women, many shy away from that possibility because of recovery times and fears of negative side-effects. Moreover, most of these women with urinary incontinence also have difficulty with sexual excitement, since weak pelvic floor muscles may be responsible for both problems. There is a non-surgical option toward the treatment of urinary incontinence. The O-Shot® is a simple, virtually painless in-office procedure using your own body’s blood derived growth factors that rejuvenate the vagina to improve, if not cure, urinary incontinence. This procedure has been shown to regenerate muscle tissue improving elasticity, overall sphincter tone and urethra function. To date, there has never been a report of the O-Shot® causing allergic reactions or urethral obstruction issues. The O-Shot®’s success rate in eliminating this embarrassing and socially debilitating condition far exceeds other traditional and alternative methods of treating urinary stress incontinence: Renessa, acupuncture, biofeedback, bulking agent injections, Kegel exercises, micro current stimulation and others. Some women have reported complete reversal of their urinary incontinence after just one treatment with the O-Shot®. This procedure is life changing by giving women the confidence and freedom to perform activities they have avoided for years, in addition to improving sexual intimacy.

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding.
Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first.
Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more…
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that!
A friend of mine convinced me to give a Forty-five million Americans no longer have chiropractor a try. Davie Student Gets Starring Role as Annie By Debby Teich
W
hen area residents see Annie
at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts this month, they might just recognize the leading actress. Nine-yearold Issie Swickle of Davie is making her debut in the title role as Annie. She will be touring the country with the show, which plays at the Broward Center from October 7-19. Annie is based upon the popular Harold Gray comic strip Little Orphan Annie. In the heart-warming tale, Issie plays the role of a spunky orphan girl who finds a home with a New York millionaire during the Depression, but must dodge the clutches of her evil orphanage mistress. Directed by original lyricist and director Martin Charnin and choreographed by Liza Gennaro, this production of the show is a brand new physical incarnation of the Tony awardwinning original. It includes such unforgettable songs as “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” “Easy Street,” “I Don’t Need Anything But You,” plus the eternal anthem of optimism, “Tomorrow.” Issie started acting at the age of five. She attended Broadway Kids Studio in Davie and was in almost every single show they produced during the year and summer. Annie is her first big role. She auditioned for several days in New York
City for the part. They made daily cuts and Issie remained until the end. Issie’s mother, Dana Swickle, says that her daughter was calm throughout auditions. “Issie was very prepared and did not seem fazed at all by the process,” said Swickle. “We are extremely proud of her and trying to take in every moment.” Martin Charnin, Director and lyricist, is impressed by her talent. “Issie is spunky, disciplined, intelligent, great to look at as a redhead, and wildly talented, especially for someone that young,” said Charnin. Once Issie was selected, she spent one month in New York with the cast rehearsing. On September 26, the show’s yearlong U.S. National Tour was launched at the Fisher Theatre in Detroit, Michigan. Issie will be attending school on location and plans to return to Fox Trail Elementary next fall. “I love being Annie,” said Issie. “The best part about being in the show is making friends with the cast.” Issie Swickle of Davie will play the role of Annie on the national tour. Racing Season Begins at the Velodrome in Cooper City By Debby Teich
Brian Piccolo Park’s Velodrome and Road Course offer a safe place for riding and in-line skating.
T
here is only one Velodrome in the
state of Florida it is located right here in Cooper City. It attracts more than 3,500 athletes annually, and is used for both competitive and recreational cycling, as well as in-line skating. In October and November, the Velodrome at Brian Piccolo Park will host a variety of races that will attract athletes from
near and far. Races will be held at 7:30pm on Tuesdays in October (14, 21, 24) and November (4, 11, 18). Florida State Championships will be held on Saturdays at 9:30am on November 1 (State Kelrin/Team Sprint), November 15 (State Kilo) and November 22 (State Sprints). The Velodrome at Brian Piccolo Park has a banked oval track for bicycle racing. It opened in March 1992 and hosted its first major race a year later. The competitive track is 333.3 meters long with a maximum 30-degree slope at each end. The recreational track is 200 meters long and has a maximum 10-degree
slope at each end. The Velodrome offers cycling development programs for adults and children, as well as developmental classes for beginning, intermediate, and advanced skaters. Riders must use the proper bikes for velodrome cycling, which do not have multiple gears or brakes. This helps to maximize speed, reduce weight, and avoid sudden braking. The bikes are available for rent at the facility, along with other necessary equipment. Cyclists with other types of bikes can use the Brian Piccolo Road Course, which is adjacent to the Velodrome and skate park. It is open from 8am to dusk daily for both cyclists and in-line speed skaters. The paved course includes both 500-meter and 800-meter loops. “Both facilities offer cyclists a safe place to ride and train,” said Carlos Laborde, special project coordinator for Broward County Parks. There is a $5 fee to use the Velodrome. Except for special events, there is no charge to use the Road Course. The park’s regular weekend and holiday gate entrance fee applies. For information, call 954-357-5160.

Breast Cancer and Beyond One in eight women will get breast cancer. However, thanks to earlier detection, new treatments and a better understanding of the disease, more women are surviving. Breast Cancer Epidemiology A gene can develop an abnormality that changes how the cell works. The most common causes of hereditary breast cancer include mutations in the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 gene. There are other hereditary causes of breast cancer, but these are the most prevalent. These genes can be inherited from either parent. High-risk women, as indicated by a personal or a strong family history, can be tested to screen for mutations in the BRCA genes.

O
ne of the areas of law which my firm han -
dles is paternity. When a child is born to parents who are not married, a Paternity issue arises. A Paternity lawsuit can be brought by either the mother or the father of the child. The purpose of the lawsuit is usually to establish the rights of the parents and establish a child support obligation. Most people however do not have knowledge of the laws in this state concerning unwed parents who have a child. When they come in for a consultation they are usually quite surprised as to the state of the law. In Florida, if the parents are not married there is no presumption as to who the father is. The purpose of filing a paternity action is to establish who the father is, and, as such, determine the respective rights and responsibilities of the parties. Florida Statutes state: “Any woman who is pregnant or has a child, any man who has reason to believe he is the father of a child, or any child may bring proceedings in the circuit court, in chancery, to determine the paternity of the child when paternity has not been established by law or otherwise.” As stated above, a mother can file a paternity action against the father of the child or a father can file one against the mother. If either party denies the paternity, a DNA test will be ordered to determine who the father is. Once paternity is established, the father has all of the rights and responsibilities of any father would have, which would include child support and time sharing. If the parties maintain their relationship, the issue of paternity rarely is a concern. It is only when the parties have conflict that the lack of an order of paternity can complicate matters. As an example, consider a non-married couple who were never married and had a child together. There is no issue as to who the father is. The couple is not living together, but has followed a time sharing schedule which is satisfactory to both parties. In addition, the father has been financially supporting the child. Since the issue of paternity has never been an issue in their lives, a court order was never sought. What might happen if the parties’ relationship deteriorates? What if the mother suddenly denies the same time sharing to the father? What if the father suddenly stops contributing financial support for the child? These are the issues that I often see in my office. What can be done? Unfortunately, until such time as paternity is established by law the father will not have the ability to file a motion to enforce his time sharing because there is no presumption that he is the father. On the other hand, the mother will not be able to immediately pursue her child support for the same reason. Establishing paternity early on will eliminate these potential problems. It is only when the parents wait until a crisis occurs that problems arise. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. Beware of the Sippy Cup By Dr. Maria Grosman
M
any parents have been educated early in
regards to the potential hazards in the misuse of baby bottles. As bottles are used for infants/babies, they usually contain milk or formula. Parents are now being educated against putting their child down with a bottle for fear of contributing to early childhood caries (ECC). In fact, the occurrence of multiple cavities at this young age, ECC, was for a long time referred to as “baby bottle cavities.” Parents have also been instructed to wean their child off of the bottle as their child approached the toddler years. In comes the “sippy cup.” It is not a bottle. It is spill proof. It is perfect for travel, prevents spills, and kids seem to keep quieter longer when they have them. It is perfect for use…and misuse. The problem is that functionally, the use of the sippy cup creates the same exposure to sugary beverages as the bottle. The use of both bottles and sippy cups necessitate an extension forward of the tongue with a simultaneous retraction of the cheeks. This action causes an exposure of the front teeth to liquid, while at the same time removes the natural cleansing effect of the saliva and tongue. When the liquid is milk or juice, the result is an increased likelihood of developing cavities. The importance of this is highlighted by the 10% rise in occurrence of cavities in 2-5 year olds in this decade vs. last.

The following are sippy cup tips recommended by the America Association of Pediatric Dentistry: ▸▸ Use sippy cups as they were intended, as a transitional tool from bottle to cup. Therefore, they should not be used for extended periods of time. ▸▸ Sippy cups should be filled with juice or milk for meals only. ▸▸ A child should not be using a sippy cup for bedtime or naps, unless filled with water. ▸▸ Diluting juice does not significantly reduce the cavity causing ability of the juice. Whether it is potty training, removal of a pacifier, or discontinuing the use of a bottle, transitioning our children can be an extremely challenging part of parenting. It is our opinion, that patience and consistency are the keys to success. In terms of the transition from the bottle, we highly recommend creating a routine that promotes the drinking of water. Juices and milk should be saved for meal times only. Getting your child used to this early will surely help reduce the need for avoidable dental treatment. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. s I stated earlier this year , “Prognosticators
stated that 2014 would bring an increase in inventory, which is a welcome relief to buyers, who are competing for great homes and creating a multiple-bid situation in the hottest of neighborhoods.” However, we are still extremely low on inventory and neighborhoods cannot keep up with the current and future demands. Steve Murray, President of Real Trends, Inc., stated that the uptick in the market is due to improved labor statistics. By 2020, there is estimated to be a total of 2,000,888 people living in Broward County. This is great news for current homeowners, because these people need a place to live and “land is dear” and most of the newer developments are occurring in Miami-Dade County. Ninety-two percent of Broward residents work in Broward County as eight percent commute to other counties. Davie: There are currently 338 single-family homes listed for sale - 29 of those listings are short sales and 23 are foreclosures. The highest priced home is an equestrian estate which is listed for $7,495,000. Compared to last year: ▸▸ Number of homes for sale is up 36.7% ▸▸ Number of homes sold is down 19% ▸▸ Average sold price per square foot is up 9.5% ▸▸ Average listed price is down 12.5% ▸▸ Average sold price is down 4.1% ▸▸ ‘Months of inventory’ is up 71.5% Our inventory has been so low for so long that the 71.5% decrease reflects 4.3 months of inventory. This is still indicative of a Seller’s market. A balanced market is 9 to 12 months. Of the 497 closed sales for all of 2014 thus far, 184 buyers paid cash! Cooper City: There are currently 114 single-family homes listed for sale - 13 of those listings are short sales and 5 are foreclosures. The highest priced estate is in Monterra, a planned development, currently listed for $890,000. Compared to last year: ▸▸ Number of homes for sale is up 108.7% ▸▸ Number of homes sold is up 11.8% ▸▸ Average sold price per square foot is up 7.7% ▸▸ Average listed price is down 3.2% ▸▸ Average sold price is up 8.7% ▸▸ ‘Months of inventory’ is up 81.3% Our inventory has been so low for so long that the 81.3% increase reflects 2.5 months of inventory. This is still indicative of a Seller’s market. As stated, a balanced market is 9 to 12 months. Of the 255 closed sales for 2014 thus far, 65 buyers paid cash! If you are serious about getting the highest price, now is the time to sell. As inventories increase, prices will level.

dlers may walk on their toes. Within three to six months the heel should be touching the ground during gait. Intermittent toe walking may be present in normal children until age six or seven. Tightness of the calf muscle is the primary cause to the child that toe walks. Underlying neurological disorders have to always be ruled out. Most children who present as persistent toe walkers are able to lower their heels to the ground when standing but not walking. Walking heel-toe is possible for a few steps but usually awkwardly due to tight calf muscles. Toe walkers are more common among boys and in many cases are a cause of concern. Treatment of habitual toe walkers may be necessary to avoid problems that can occur secondary to compensating for the abnormal posture. Compensation may occur by hyperextending the knee, rotating the entire leg towards the outside or having the foot turn down or out, causing a flat foot. It is important to assess the degree of muscle tightness in the hips, knees and legs. Spontaneous resolution may take place in some cases. If the gastroc soleus (calf muscles) are not severely tight, physical therapy or stretching at home may be of benefit. If unresponsive, serial casting may be necessary. Serial casting is a process in which the foot and leg are placed in a cast with the foot held in a neutral position. The muscle is placed under stretch while the cast is on and walking is strongly encouraged to help the muscles stretch. Children who are sedentary who are placed in a cast do not get the same benefits as those that are active. Casts are applied every ten to fourteen days until the muscle is slightly overstretched. It may take as little as two to as many as eight weeks to improve the muscle flexibility. Following the casts, a night splint may be used for up to six months to maintain calf flexibility. In some cases the muscle is too tight to respond to serial casting. Surgical lengthening of the Achilles tendon through three little holes in the skin may be needed. It is an outpatient procedure. Casts are applied postoperatively for six to eight weeks. Once healing takes place, physical therapy is provided to maintain lower extremity strength and flexibility. An excellent long-term prognosis is the norm.

Giant African Land Snails Found in Davie By Davie Mayor Judy Paul
I
nvasive and destructive G iant African L and Snails were located for the first time in Broward County when a Davie resident called in a tip one day after extensive media coverage of Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam’s press conference on the state’s snail eradication program. “Although we are very concerned about locating Giant African Land Snails outside of the core areas of Miami-Dade County, this find only underscores the importance of the role of South Florida residents to help us successfully eradicate these snails,” said Commissioner Putnam. “We also appreciate the quick action of the individual who called in the report once he realized the major threat these snails are to agriculture, the environment and human and animal health.” The majority of snail finds are identified through calls from the public to the program helpline, including the tip from a Davie homeowner who was informed of the snails on his property by workers from Miami who were aware of the eradication program. Eradication teams were immediately dispatched to the location on SW 136 Ave. State inspectors have collected about 50 snails so far, with the largest being 5 inches in size. Many more snails are expected to be collected as these efforts continue. Scientists consider these snails to be one of the most damaging snails in the world because they are known to consume at least 500 different types of plants. The snails cause structural damage to buildings by consuming plaster and stucco to get the calcium they need to grow their shells. The snail can also carry a parasite, known as rat lungworm, which can cause a form of meningitis in humans and pets.
Recent program highlights include increased snail mortality rates and eliminating more than 1 million pounds of plant and yard debris from properties that serve as snail habitat. In addition, two detector dog teams have recently been deployed to sniff out the snails. Program officials continue to refine eradication techniques, including researching alternative bait treatments, inspecting lawn maintenance companies and solid waste facilities, continuing public outreach and education activities, and developing experimental trap designs. Originally from East Africa, the GALS, Achatina fulica, is one of the largest land snails in the world, growing up to 8 inches in length. Each snail can live as long as 9 years. GALS are difficult to eradicate because they have no natural predator and they reproduce exponentially, up to 1,200 more snails per year. To report a Giant African Land Snail, call the department’s toll-free helpline at 888-397-1517. To preserve a snail sample, with gloved hands put the snail in a ziptop bag, seal it, and put in a bucket or plastic container. Do not touch the snails or release them in a different location. The Town of Davie has been actively involved by sending out 236 letters to agricultural properties west of Hiatus Rd and placing large sandwich signs in the neighboring area with a picture of the snail and the number to call. Many thanks to the editor for inviting me to send greetings and information about the Town of Davie in this publication. If you have any questions or concerns about the Town of Davie, please don’t hesitate to contact me at 954-797-1030 or jpaul@davie-fl.gov.

n O ctober , we wear purple ribbons for
Domestic Violence Awareness Month. According to the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence (FCADV), the most current national studies on domestic violence suggest that from 22 to 25 percent of all women will experience domestic violence at some point during their lives. Victims often refuse to report domestic violence incidents or are reluctant to follow through with the justice system due to the fear of retribution from the abuser. Unfortunately, domestic violence cases that do not get resolved have a higher likelihood of ending in homicide. At the Broward Sheriff’s Office, we are committed to changing these statistics. BSO is the only law enforcement agency in Broward County with an Intimate Violence Enhanced Service Team (InVEST). InVEST is sponsored through a grant funded by the FCADV and specifically addresses intimate partner violence (IPV) to decrease homicides. The greater the support a victim receives from InVEST, the greater the chance that the victim will not feel discouraged by the criminal justice system, and then drop charges or go back to the abuser. A BSO InVEST detective is assigned to the Special Victims Unit (SVU) in Criminal Investigations Division (CID), handling 30 to 40 IPV cases per month. Within 24 hours of an incident being filed and submitted to InVEST, the victim is contacted and immediately referred to social services within the community. Often, the victim does not know there are free services available through local nonprofits, such as Women in Distress, to pay for rent, food and legal aid. There are also safe houses and shelters, counseling and job placement options to allow the victim to reclaim his or her life. BSO partners with nonprofits and the State Attorney’s Office to ensure the victim receives the help he or she needs. Our InVEST detective also works to hold abusers accountable for their actions. After charges are filed, the perpetrators often urge victims to drop the charges. Any form of contact, even if the abuser asks a friend or family member to intervene, violates the No Contact order that a judge serves during the perpetrator’s first appearance hearing. If an abuser is in jail, more charges are added. If the abuser is stalking or harassing the victim while out on bond, another warrant is filed for arrest. Since the majority of deputy injuries and deaths occur from responding to domestic violence calls, we take every precaution. In some cases, BSO’s Fugitive, Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response (V.I.P.E.R.) and SWAT units assist InVEST and SVU to track down and arrest the perpetrator. InVEST is also involved in agency-wide proactive awareness. Over the course of InVEST’s two-year grant program, our detective will train at least 600 deputies about risk assessment to know how to ask the right questions when responding to domestic violence calls. InVEST supplies our deputies with domestic violence reference cards with applicable state statutes and 24-hour hotline numbers, as well as investigative kits containing cameras and digital recorders to document evidence while on scene. This evidence is then used in court to increase the likelihood of successful prosecution. Deputy risk assessment training for domestic violence will be written into BSO policy and procedures before the InVEST grant program ends in July 2015. I want every deputy to be a better responder when it comes to matters of domestic violence. My goal is also to educate other agencies in Broward County on the benefits of InVEST. Domestic violence not only affects those who are abused, but also has a substantial effect on the community at large. Children who grow up witnessing domestic violence are among those seriously affected by this crime. Frequent exposure to violence in the home not only predisposes children to numerous emotional, social and physical problems, but it also teaches them that violence is a normal way of life, which increases their risk of becoming society’s next generation of victims and abusers. As sheriff of Broward County, I want every resident to know that domestic violence will not be tolerated. Help is here and you are not alone. Our deputies are on your side, and we’ll do all we can to keep you safe. For information on InVEST, visit www.sheriff.org and click on the purple ribbon.

Symptoms of fibromyalgia are varied and may include chronic muscle pain, painful joints, stiffness, numbness, or tingling. In addition, some may experience tension or migraine headaches, sensitivity to light or smells, and in more severe cases, depression and chronic fatigue.

Fibromyalgia is not a psychological condition. Recent research suggests that changes in the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) may be responsible. As we age, the vertebral joints of the spine begin to degenerate and can press on the roots of the spinal nerves, causing the classic symptoms of fibromyalgia. It can also result from traumatic injuries, infections, diabetes, metabolic problems and exposure to toxins.

Shaping Change Helps Clients Address Behavioral Issues By Debby Teich
B
ehavioral issues are
widespread among children, adolescents, and adults and can greatly affect their everyday lives. The Shaping Change clinic in Cooper City uses a systemic approach to help clients address many of these issues. They provide Applied Behavior Analytic (ABA) therapy, tutoring, training, coaching, social skills groups, and professional consulting.
President/Clinical Director Janessa Dominguez, M.S., BCBA, answered some commonly asked questions about Shaping Change. When did you open? Shaping Change was founded as a oneperson endeavor in early 2012, offering consulting behavioral services for several providers. It developed into the vision of this start-up clinic out of the need to provide a combination of services in one single place.
Janessa Dominguez, President/Clinical Director

ate replacement behaviors. It is used in the treatment of special needs as an approach to enhance skills, reduce problem behaviors, and introduce replacement behaviors. We take into account all aspects of our clients’ environments. All services are monitored and reviewed by the BCBA. Describe your coaching programs. Our coaching programs can be individual-driven or set up for a family to facilitate the development and achievement of goals. Social skills groups focus on helping individuals make and keep friends, as well as initiation skills, response skills, and non-verbal communication. Describe your consulting services. We provide consulting services to schools, clinics, and businesses who wish to use behavior analytic principles in their organizations. In a school and clinic setting, ABA is used to enhance learning and track progress. In a business setting, ABA is used to increase motivation, productivity, efficiency, and group cohesiveness. Describe your staff. Services are provided by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), a Board Certified Associate Behavior analyst (BCaBA), and behavior therapists. What distinguishes you from your competition? We stem from a systemic way of thinking. We look at the larger picture, in addition to the components that make it up. When we apply this in practice, we have the belief that involving every person who is a part of the individual’s service team will facilitate a more complete and effective program. We take an individual-first approach, where we look past the diagnosis and see the individual for who he or she is. Shaping Change accepts most major insurance carriers. The clinic is open Monday-Friday, from 9am-5pm. It is located at 11011 Sheridan Street, Suite 304, in Cooper City.
