Happy Halloween
I
f your family is like mine, Halloween is one of your kids’ favorite holidays. This seems a bit strange to me, when you think about the origins of this holiday. The word Halloween is a contraction for All Hallow’s Eve, a Christian day of remembrance believed to have been established in the 8th century by Pope Gregory III. It was a quiet somber day. So, how did we get from silently meditating about dead saints to carving pumpkins, overeating candy and dressing up like our favorite super-villain or princess? The answer, it seems, is that like many modern holidays, Halloween is actually an amalgamation of a number of different traditions. Historians believe that many of our current Halloween customs have their roots in the British Isles. In the 16th century, youths in parts of Ireland and Scotland would go from house to house impersonating old spirits. They would threaten mischief if they were not greeted and offered food. This is where the phrase “Trick or Treat” originated. Over time, these mostly Pagan traditions became commercialized to become the Halloween we know today: a day when children dress up as superheroes and collect candy; a time when teens participate in, hopefully, harmless pranks; and a night when young adults frequent parties, dressed as any number of things. However you chose to celebrate, have a Happy Halloween! Sincerely,
Terry Jaillet President & Publisher

That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. Davie to Celebrate Government Week community news
By Debby Teich
W
hen Davie’s Mayor, Councilmembers and staff make decisions, they directly impact the people who live there. This month, Davie students will have an opportunity to learn what it takes to run their Town. They can tour Town Hall and may even get to visit with the Mayor and/or Councilmembers. It is all part of Government Week, which will be held on October 17 and 18. The Florida League of Cities, an association of member municipalities throughout Florida, is sponsoring “My city: I’m part of it; I’m proud of it.” The program is designed to educate school-aged children about their local government. “I could not believe how much goes into running the Town of Davie,” said 11-year-old Zack Freesman, who took a tour last year. “It was great to learn about all of the different jobs that people do. After taking a tour, I might want to work in one of them after I graduate college.” Last year approximately 150 students attended throughout the week and organizers are expecting the same this year. Between the hours of 9:30am and 3:30pm, they will tour the Town Hall facility, where they can observe the Town staff performing their daily tasks. They will have the opportunity to interact with staff in areas, such as Administration; Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs; Budget and Finance; Human Resources; Town Clerk’s office; Planning and Zoning; Building; and Engineering. Fire engines, police and public works vehicles might also be available for the kids to see, since those departments are not located at Town Hall. Schools/groups that are interested should download an application at www. davie-fl.gov and submit it no later than October 7. Groups may not exceed 40 students per tour group and must adhere to school board standards, as it relates to the number of adults required to supervise children on field trips. Once registration is full, no other groups will be accepted. For information and applications, visit www.davie-fl.gov; go to the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts Department, or call Anna Francis, crew leader, at 954-797-1181.

City of Cooper City to Hold Garage Sale and Book Swap SECTION HEAD community news
By Debby Teich
A
s the holidays approach, many are looking for gift items, both new and used. This month, the City of Cooper City will offer two great ways to find them at the Garage Sale and Book Swap. Garage Sale Whether you are selling or buying, this is the place to be for deals galore. Anywhere from 500 people to a few thousand are expected to attend the Garage Sale, which will be held on October 8, from 7am to noon in the parking lot of the Cooper City Sports Complex at Stirling Road at 100th Avenue. “The residents love this event,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist. “It is easier than going to individual garage sales and is a one stop shop. It’s a great way to find some treasures at great prices and meet some of your Cooper City neighbors.” Sixty-three vendors will be selling a variety of house-
hold items, including clothing, toys and exercise equipment. The cost for a spot the size of a full parking space is $21.20, including tax. One parking space allowed per household. Registration closes once all the spots are filled. No professional vendors. Vendors must be Cooper City residents. Proof of residency is required. For information, call Cooper City Recreation Department at 954-434-4300, ext. #233. Book Swap Beginning October 17, drop off your slightly used books in good condition at either the Pool and Tennis or Community Center. A ticket will be issued for each donated book. There are typically books for all ages and types of readers, ranging from Dr. Seuss to Stephen King. Audio books, DVD movies, complete board games and puzzles will also be also accepted. “In a day an age where many people hide behind their computer screens, this event is great to promote community involvement and reinforce literacy within the Cooper City Community,” said Trainor. “It is the perfect way to share the novel you once loved and discover a new best seller in the process.” On October 21, parents and their children can come
to the Community Center from 6pm to 7:30pm to swap tickets for books. At 5:30pm, there will be a special “kids only time,” which allows children the opportunity to go through the children’s books first. “Children really enjoy going to the book fair at school,” said Trainor. “By having a kids’ only time, we are doing our best to recreate the schools book fair experience, but for free! We hope that by creating this environment we will bring out the children’s inner book worm.” Trainor says that they are looking for volunteers to help categorize and sort the books the week prior to the Swap. For information or to volunteer to sort books, call 954-434-4300 #233.

Southwest Ranches Arts and Crafts Festival Offers Great Holiday Shopping By Debby Teich
W
ith the holidays approaching, many have already started shopping for those perfect gifts. Chances are you will find them at the 10th Annual Town of Southwest Ranches Country Roads Arts and Crafts Festival. The event will be held on October 15, from 10am to 4pm, at the Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park. With its diverse lineup of artists and crafters, the festival has something for everyone. “Southwest Ranches is excited to be going into our 10th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival,” said December Lauretano-Haines, PROS Coordinator. “The Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park is a great setting with useful amenities and plenty of parking. We’re sporting a great lineup of vendors this year, many of whom have been with us from the beginning, but also some new and different folks. We’re constantly amazed at the imagination and effort that people bring and our festival has grown a wonderful sense of community and goodwill. Our festival has remained a small and intimate event, easily accessible even for folks who only have a little time to spend without the hassle that comes from larger events.” Approximately 50-60 vendors are expected to participate with items that are handmade or handembellished crafts and original art. They include paper arts, hand-crafted jewelry, specialty wood products, mosaics, paintings, children’s and stu-

If you love to sew, paint, knit, quilt, draw, throw pottery, or do some other
type of handiwork and have items to sell to the public, the festival is a great place to do it. Available booth sizes include: 10 x 10 ($50), 10 x 20 ($100) and 10 x 30 ($150). which worsens at the end of the day or after standing and traveling. If you have vein disease, gradually over time you will notice more and more leg pain, heaviness, swelling, bulging veins, discoloration around the ankles and skin changes. As time goes on, skin changes may worsen and the person can develop scarring called Atrophie Blanche or lipodermatosclerosis. This can lead to venous ulcers around the ankles and sores which are very difficult to heal. These people may require and ultrasound of the legs to diagnose their specific problem.
What is vein disease? Veins
are blood vessels that return blood to the heart from the body. They have one way valves that keep blood flowing in one direction. These valves often do not work properly and when they do not function properly can cause “reflux” or back flow in the veins. The blood then begins to pool when this happens and can cause a variety of problems and symptoms.
What are the different types of vein disease?

Spider veins are the small fine, blue or purple veins that are often seen on the skin surface. Many people seek treatment of these veins for cosmetic reasons. More than 50% of Before people have symptoms even with these small veins. Often they require therapy. Varicose veins are the large rope-like veins that are often seen in people’s legs. These grow over time and can result in a great deal of pain and swelling.
How do I know if I have vein disease? Often
the veins are visible on the skin surface as blue or red lines, grape like bulges or ropey blue cords. Some people have pain or swelling in the legs,
at least two months after pregnancy or major surgery before being treated for vein disease. Patients with suppressed immune systems, those with deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, clotting disorders or who are immobile may not be good candidates for vein treatment.
What can happen if veins aren’t treated? Varicose
veins generally worsen over time. At first you’ll feel slight pain, restlessness, and heaviness or aching in the diseased leg. If left untreated, this pain will increase. The legs will feel heavy, tired and After swell and become more and more discolored. Eventually, this can lead to bleeding veins, open sores or ulcers on the ankles, which can take several months to years to treat. Most insurances are accepted. Functional Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement
Colostrum Is Not Just a Baby’s Superfood By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette
C
olostrum is not just a baby’s superfood - adults can benefit too! Packed with antibodies and nutrients, the first drops of milk from a mother’s breast—a yellowish liquid known as colostrum - are critical in developing immunity to protect newborns from infection and disease. This pre-milk, released by the mother before actual milk production, is not only important in providing the foundation for a healthy organism in babies. Numerous studies have shown an array of benefits of colostrum supplementation in adults. Along with supporting the immune system, colostrum’s growth factor is known to have anti-aging properties as it maintains skin elasticity—the cause of wrinkles and sagging skin. Also, growth hormone found in colostrum repairs and maintains lean muscle mass in addition to increasing bone density, which prevents osteoporosis. Researchers have even linked improved performance in elite athletes to colostrum supplementation. And the list of benefits goes on. Conditions that are currently treated with prescription medications can certainly be alleviated with the proper dosage of colostrum. For example, take Leaky Gut Syndrome—a very common condition affecting millions of Americans. It is no secret that serious illness starts in the gut. A leaky gut causes undigested food particles to be secreted into the bloodstream, causing chronic inflammation and opening the door to diseases such as Crohn’s, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, arthritis, heartburn, and even allergies. As traditional medicine continues to turn to prescription medication for solutions, patients continue to get sicker, while still feeling uncomfortable or suffering unpleasant side effects. The solution could be as simple as supplementing a healthy lifestyle with a dose of colostrum. Growth factors in colostrum include strengthening the lining of the stomach, as well as preventing toxins and bacteria from going into the bloodstream. Our bodies need to be repaired from within and through its own natural processes, not with medications that only offer a temporary patch. And this is the foundation of the functional medicine practice—finding the root of the problem and treating it using the patient’s own body. Once the gut issues are resolved, you are less likely to suffer from illness. Now that you know the benefits of including colostrum in your diet, you might be wondering if it’s right for you. You walk into your local pharmacy and contemplate buying this miracle supplement only to be confused by so many brands, bottles, and marketing labels. Which should you get? Before you venture into this realm, be sure to work with a qualified practitioner who can guide you because not all colostrum is created equal. Colostrum supplements are extracted from cows. And yes, it has been proven that bovine colostrum is as effective as human-produced colostrum—so don’t be alarmed. However, how colostrum is collected and processed will determine its effectiveness. For example, colostrum extracted from cows within 24 hours of giving birth will be much more effective than samples collected after. Other factors, such as animal diet and exposure to pesticides, are also important. Bottom line is that colostrum is nature’s first food and it is still a super food today. It is probably right for you, but you must seek professional advice to know which and how much you should be taking. At Bellissimo, we can certainly help you make the right choice. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954-3848989. Join in the Fun at the Mayor’s Open Play Chess Challenge community news
By Debby Teich
C
hess has long been regarded as a game that can have beneficial effects on learning and development, especially when it is played from a young age. Chess players of all skill levels and ages are invited to participate in free, open chess play in Cooper City. The Mayor’s Open Play Chess Challenge is held on the fourth Saturday of every month, from 9am-11am, at the Pool & Tennis Center, 1600 Stonebridge Parkway. The next event is on October 22. “Chess is one of the most popular games in the world,” said Chris Garcia, recreation director for the City of Cooper City Recreation Department. “It builds critical thinking skills to evaluate, comprehend and analyze each move on a continual basis. And most importantly, it is fun and challenging!” Cooper City has hosted the Mayor’s Open Play Chess Challenge since November 2014, when Cooper City Mayor Greg Ross and other mayors throughout the county began to encourage and promote chess, which is now part of the 2nd and 3rd grade curriculum in Broward County Schools. The initial event was such a success that the City set aside one Saturday of the month to promote and provide a venue to encourage chess play.
Mayor Ross attends the monthly challenges to play a friendly game of chess and meet the players. Approximately 25 people participate each month, including players from Cooper City and other municipalities. Many of them are local students that are members of elementary, middle and high school chess clubs throughout Broward. The Saturday play gives them an opportunity to meet and play with students in other schools. Many adults also attend. When prospective players arrive, the chess boards are already set up. Mayor Ross and some of the other players typically work with beginning players to show them the game. Light refreshments are served for all to enjoy.
Brett Howard, 13, plans to attend the October challenge. “I recently learned to play chess and love the game,” said Brett. “I am looking forward to meeting some kids my own age who love the game, so I can play against them after school.” For information, visit www.coopercityfl. org or call 954-434-4300, ext. 233.
Cooper City Mayor Greg Ross enjoys the monthly Mayor’s Open Play Chess Challenge with some of the players.
Western High Students Remember 9/11 Victims By Debby Teich
L
ast month, hundreds gathered at Western High School in Davie for the 15th annual memorial ceremony to commemorate America’s fallen heroes and to remember those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Although most of the school’s students are aware of the events of September 11th, the majority were not even born at the time. The memorial service gives them a chance to talk about this tragedy. The service was held as the school’s 9/11 memorial site, which was designed and built by students 15 years ago. It includes replicas of the Twin Towers and Pentagon, as well as a flag that is embedded in an outline of the State of Pennsylvania. Western High School Principal Jimmy Arrojo welcomed guests and talked about the effect the tragedy has had on Americans. “On that day 15 years ago, heroes and victims were created and they should never be forgotten,” said Arrojo. “For the past 15 years, we have been dedicating the ceremony to all those different heroes and victims of 9/11.” The audience included members of the Davie Police Department, Davie Fire Rescue Department, Davie Police Honor Guard and many others. The school chorus sang the National Anthem. The Fire Department rang a bell after the each of the 23 police officers killed was named. The flag used in the ceremony, which was provided by the 513 club in New York, was used at Ground Zero. A variety of guests spoke; many recounted where they were when the tragedy occurred. “Every year I remember the events of that day and those following,” said Officer Daniel Farrell, retired NYPD/Coconut Creek Police. “I did not die that day, but a part of me did.” Photos: Davie Police Department; Town of Davie

Davie Teen Completes Eagle Scout Project
SECTION can do kids HEAD

P
atrick Morano, 17, is on his way to sharing a prestigious title with notables like Neil Armstrong, Michael Bloomberg, Gerald R. Ford, Bill Gates Sr., James A. Lovell Jr. and many others. This month, the Davie resident will receive his Eagle rank from Troop 183. Patrick joined the Boy Scouts of America at the age of ten and has been working his way toward becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the program. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges, as well as completing an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages. Since Patrick has always liked wildlife, he chose to complete his project at Flamingo Garden’s wildlife sanctuary. While walking the property with the park director, they discovered a utility area that needed a new fence to protect young kids from being exposed to pipes and electric utility equipment and to make the walkway more aesthetically pleasing. Patrick immediately knew he had found the perfect project. After identifying the tools, materi-
als, supplies, manpower and funds he would need to finish the project, he reached out to local businesses and people for support. Home Depot provided the wood and some nails and he held fundraising projects to help pay for polyurethane and other items. He solicited the help of troop members, friends and his brothers, who are also Eagle Scouts. “Everybody was willing to help when they realized this was a worthy cause,” said Patrick. “We had fun. And at the end of the day, we all were able to enjoy Flamingo Gardens and see the great work they do.” Patrick is currently a senior at Archbishop McCarthy High School. In the fall, he is hoping to attend University of Florida or Florida State University, where he plans to study business. He would like to continue with Scouts in a different capacity, possibly as a counselor or support staff. “I am grateful for the Scout leadership and the time they have volunteered over the years,” said Patrick. “The community is a better place, because of their investment and belief in me.”
Davie Residents to Take the Stage for Young Stars Showcase By Debby Teich
O
n November 6, Davie residents CJ Fam, 16, and Emily Kaufman, 12, will take the stage for the 7th annual Aventura Mall Young Stars Showcase at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, at 5pm. More than 300 people are expected to attend the event that features youngsters ages 12-21. Some past performers have had starring roles on television and competed on The Voice, American Idol and America’s Got Talent. Proceeds will benefit the Aventura Marketing Council Education Foundation, which funds educational outreaches through mentorships, jobs, community service projects, scholarships and working with at-promise students. “I’ve been to New York and Las Vegas numerous times and have seen kids perform on Broadway and the Vegas Strip,” said Aventura Marketing Council Chairman Cliff Schulman. “These youngsters are not far away from being able to do that! I am thrilled we are able to give young talent in South Florida this opportunity and present such a professional show for the community.” CJ, who is a junior in high school, has been involved with the Young Stars Showcase since 2014. She has spent many years training in singing, dancing and acting. She is a three-time Thespian Critics Choice winner at the district and state level, first place winner for the South Florida Fair and the Broward County Fair, participant in the NYU songwriters advanced songwriting class and more. The singer/songwriter has recorded her own original music, which is available on YouTube, and is working on new music that will be released soon. She is hoping to pursue a career in the entertainment field. “I have been interested in theater since I could talk,” said CJ. “I love singing and theater, because it allows me to express myself unlike any other profession. I feel at home when I sing and perform. It’s a way to release stress and it’s so amazing! The stage is my home.” This is Emily’s second time performing in the Young Stars Showcase, where she will sing a Whitney Houston song and perform in a group number. The 7th grader has been in 15 musicals, since she got her start at age six. She often performs for the elderly and loves to sing the National Anthem at Florida Marlins games and

galas for nonprofit organizations. She is a singer, actress and dancer, but likes singing the most. She has won various first place trophies for her dance and vocal solos. She says that one of her most exciting performances was when Phil Collins selected her for his Little Dreams Foundation and they performed together at the Filmore in Miami Beach. “I feel very at home on the stage, whether acting or singing,” said Emily. “I enjoy making people happy. I would love to sell out arenas and go on tour, but would also be happy in a Broadway show.” For information, call 305-932-5334 or visit www.theyss.org.

Surviving Breast Cancer From diagnosis and beyond – a roadmap for life.
Thomas Samuel, MD Breast Oncologist
Joylene Sutton-Aransevia, ARNP Nurse Practitioner
“You are cancer free.” These are words that not only bring a wave of relief, but also the desire to get back to life as you knew it, before breast cancer. But, as a breast cancer survivor, you still need to think about your long-term health and well being. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Survivorship Care Program offers the much-needed ongoing support, along with a roadmap to your future. Whether you have just completed treatment or are a long-term survivor, under the direction of breast oncologist, Thomas Samuel, MD, and Joylene Sutton-Aransevia ARNP, the Survivorship Care Program offers the support you need to become empowered and take charge of your life going forward. “First, a treatment plan summary is provided, so patients can see the journey they have traveled to beat breast cancer,” explains Dr. Samuel. “Then, we add a roadmap that will guide them through the next several
years. This outlines standard screenings, follow-up care for physician visits, as well as necessary lab work. In addition, the program educates patients about the possible longterm effects of their treatments, identifying signs and symptoms to be aware of, and how to seek help if they occur.” This provides survivors the opportunity to think about how they want to live going forward. “Being diagnosed with breast cancer and going through the rigorous treatment is a life-changing experience,” explains Joylene Sutton-Aransevia, ARNP. “Many patients adopt a new lifestyle and look forward with a better outlook on life. Our program helps patients reconstruct, rebuild and redeem their lives.” Just as Cleveland Clinic’s approach to the treatment of cancer includes a multidisciplinary team method, the survivorship care team is also comprised of physicians, nurse practitioners, social workers, nutritionists and other support groups. By providing a comprehensive overview plan, the Survivorship Care Program guides patients as they continue their journey along the pathway to wellness, looking forward to life as a survivor.

arents usually have lots of questions regarding normal milestones for their child’s speech and language development. When do children speak their first words? When do they start to put words together into sentences? At what age are speech sound errors still considered developmental? Is stuttering normal in preschoolers, and what can I do about it? While the answers to these questions are not always simple, here are some guidelines for parents to follow:
▸▸ Normally developing infants usually turn towards the sounds of voices and noises, and begin making nonsense sounds between six to 12 months. During this time, you may notice that your child appears to understand words that are said to him/ her and they begin to play simple nonverbal games such as peek a boo. Maintaining eye contact and taking turns are important skills that children acquire to help them with their developing language. ▸▸ First words usually appear between 12 months and 18 months, and simple two to three word sentences between 18 months and two years.
woRking with weSton and daVie childRen foR 20 yeaRS
▸▸ Between two and three years of age, children add hundreds of words to their vocabulary. A three-year-old is capable of expressing his or her needs in sentences. ▸▸ Primary stuttering usually occurs during this period when children are trying to organize their thoughts into sentences. While primary stuttering can be a stage that some children pass through, a speech and language pathologist can provide parents and teachers with ideas that they can incorporate at home or school to help the child through this period.

▸▸ Correct production of speech sounds is a developmental skill, with correct production of the early learned consonant sounds occurring at about age three and continuing until the ages of five through seven. Children with a history of ear infections and oral motor weaknesses are at risk for developing speech and language delays. ▸▸ Reading is written language. Children who experience delays in understanding and speaking language will have difficulty with reading comprehension. Delays in speech sound development can result in a child having difficulty “hearing” the differences between sounds. This can affect the child’s ability to sound out words or blend sounds into words (decoding).

Real Estate 101: What Does Your Listing Agent Do? (Part I)
real estate

W
hen selling your home, these are just some of the duties of your listing agent. Schedule Listing Appointment When sellers decide to hire an experienced Realtor to sell their home, the agent schedules a time to meet with all the decision makers. They do a walk-through of the property, as she takes notes about any upgrades or issues that may need to be addressed in order to get your home ready to sell. Research Sold Properties A market research will be conducted before or following the appointment by using the data available in the local MLS. The main focus is to find nearby relevant sales (like kind properties) that have sold within the past ninety days. Appraisals typically reach back ninety days for comparables. Research Comparable Days on Market The data will reflect how long the properties have been on the market. This will help her better determine the most probable sales price. Pricing Strategy Let the showings begin! If the home is being shown, your agent is properly marketing the home in print and digitally, and an offer has not been made within the first two weeks of the listing, the price may be the obstacle and may need to be repositioned. Marketing Strategy Brochures, just-listed postcards, newspaper ads and magazine ads are just a few of the ways your Realtor should market your home in print. Social media outlets, such as Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, web pages, singleproperty websites, Twitter and Google+, are just a few online strategies for getting your home worldwide exposure. Real estate is no longer a selling business, but a marketing business. Strategic marketing strategies will be discussed with the homeowners with updates on a weekly basis. Open houses and brokers’ opens offer more opportunities for locals to see your home in its best light. With proper digital invitations and e-mails, as well as print advertising, the open house will be a great success. Even though the home is listed on the local MLS, the property details are distributed through list hubs throughout the world. Realtor.com, Trulia and Zillow are prime examples. They are also known as Real Estate search engines. With the information being distributed and showcased in “real time,” any potential buyer can see the property’s photographs and details. Photography and detail integrity are the most important aspects of marketing. Using a professional photographer, who is skilled in angles, lighting, HDR and video, can be the greatest strategy for attracting buyers to your home. The virtual tour is produced from the photographs, as well as the video, which can be seen on YouTube, as well as other social media outlets. For those homeowners who think selling Real Estate is about hammering a sign in your yard and praying for the perfect buyer to drive by (especially those homeowners who live in gated communities), they might want to rethink that strategy. Realtors market to Realtors. The relationships developed in this business are the key to getting an offer presented and an offer accepted. Stay tuned for Part II . . . Halloween safety tips
The Facts About “Laughing Gas”
W
Choosing Your Costume ▸ Make sure you can see. Masks and hoods can make it hard to see. Non-toxic face paints are a much better choice. ▸ Wear something that reflects light. You can add reflective tape to your costume and treat bags so that drivers can see you. Carry a flashlight to light your way. You can even find one to match your costume! Fun With Friends ▸ Younger children should always have a responsible adult or older teenager with them while they trick or treat. ▸ Take some friends along. A group of three or more is much safer than one. Plan Ahead ▸ Plan your route and decide with your parents what time you should be home. ▸ Only visit the houses of people you know and where an outside light is on. If the light is off, they are probably away from home or not giving out candy. ▸ Don’t go inside a house to accept candy. Safety First ▸ Don’t stand too close to a lighted candle – especially in a jack o’lantern. Your costume might catch fire. ▸ Watch out for traffic, stay on the sidewalks, and cross only at intersections. Don’t cross or hide between parked cars. Look both ways before crossing the street. ▸ Don’t cut across alleys or yards. ▸ Have one of your parents or a responsible adult check your candy before eating it. Throw any open packages or homemade treats away. Tips for Parents ▸ Children often want to help carve the pumpkin, but little fingers and sharp objects don’t mix. Let your children draw the face on the pumpkin while you handle the carving. ▸ Make sure your children understand the rules of Halloween safety. Develop a game plan and agree on the rules ahead of time. ▸ When shopping for costumes, check to make certain the material is flame retardant and that your child’s vision won’t be obscured by any part of the costume. Make sure the costume isn’t too long to prevent tripping. If your child is wearing a hat, check to see that it won’t slip down over the eyes. ▸ You may want to find an alternative to door-to-door trick or treating such as going to a mall or community event. You also may want to host a special Halloween party for your children and their friends. ▸ It’s not safe today to let children go trick or treating alone. Have a responsible adult or older teen go with smaller children. Older children and teens should go in groups. ▸ Make your home safe for those little treaters. There are special lights that mimic a candle for jack o’lanterns. If you do use a candle, keep the pumpkin on a sturdy surface away from where the children are likely to stand. Don’t leave a burning candle unattended.

ike many parents in our community, I tend to approach the use of any medicine for my children with a discerning eye. What are the risks and benefits of its use? How long will it last in the system? Are there any side effects I should look for or take home instructions needed? It is for this reason that I am happy to educate the public on the use and safety of Nitrous Oxide (also known as “laughing gas”) for use with the apprehensive pediatric dental patient, when indicated. It is first important to point out the very long history and safe track record of its use. Nitrous oxide (N20) was first discovered by Joseph Priestly in 1772. Interestingly, its use for the first 80 years was mostly for entertainment purposes receiving its current nickname “laughing gas.” In 1845, Horace Wells, a dentist from Hartford, Connecticut, demonstrated its use as an anesthetic during the extraction of a wisdom tooth at Harvard University. His work on nitrous oxide would eventually earn him the distinction of being the discoverer of anesthesia. Once accepted by the medical community, its method of delivery had been improved and, in turn, its impeccable safety record had become established. Nitrous oxide is a gas that is delivered through inhalation. Although early documentation showed safe delivery in its pure form, safety has increased exponentially with its combination with oxygen. The addition of oxygen assures that there will be no decrease in oxygenation of the body throughout its use. New sophisticated equipment also assures desired concentrations by a titrating delivery mechanism, allows for rapid reversal, and disallows usage of more than 70% nitrous gas. The combination with oxygen has not only made the use of nitrous safer, but has also made its use more versatile. Its first use was prior to the discovery of the local anesthetic, lidocaine. For this reason, it was administered at higher concentrations in order to achieve some form of anesthesia (relief of pain). In the dental environment, it is given at a much lower dosage (much lower than the recommended limit) in order to achieve anxiolysis, or reduction of anxiety. Its safety record at these lower doses is impeccable. In the 1970’s, H. Ruben had documented three million cases of its use for dentistry without adverse reaction. In answer to my initial questions, nitrous oxide is a safe and odorless inhalant, which exits the body immediately after removal. The only routine recommendation we give is no ingestion of food or drink 60 minutes prior to its use to eliminate chance of nausea. Although we prefer to treat our patients without the need of an anxiolytic, Nitrous Oxide remains a perfect alternative for pediatric patients who may otherwise have a “bad experience.” Negative experiences in youth have been shown to create long term dental anxiety lasting into adulthood for some dental patients. It is for this reason, that over 80% of all pediatric dentists report using it in their practice. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 954-236-3434.

O
ften times, when an individual comes in to see me for an initial consultation they have pre-conceived notions about divorce law. This is most often true when dealing with minor children. The term “custody” is almost always brought up when discussing the minor children and their relationship with each of the parents. They are often surprised to learn that the term “custody” is no longer a term that is used in this state. Neither parent will be awarded “custody” of their minor child(ren). Instead, each parent’s rights and obligations will be contained in a document titled “Parenting Plan.” This is a multi-page form that contains all necessary information concerning the parents’ rights and responsibilities going forward. It is in essence a “default document,” which should be referenced if there is ever a dispute. Judges will generally tell the parents that it is their hope that this document will be put away in a drawer and only reviewed if necessary to resolve a conflict. A Parenting Plan must be filed when there are minor children involved. The provisions will either be agreed to by the parents or, if no agreement can be reached, it will be up to a judge to decide these issues. The Parenting Plan will establish the Court’s jurisdiction over the minor children. It will specify the type of parental responsibility that will be exercised by the parents. In most cases, the parents will have “shared parental responsibility,” which gives each equal decision making concerning significant issues in a child’s life. This does not include day-to-day decisions, which will be made by the parent who has the child(ren) on their particular day. In very limited circumstances, one parent may have sole parental responsibility and decision making. This occurs when one of the parents has exhibited behavior which proves that shared parental responsibility is not in a child’s best interests. The Parenting Plan will also state which parent’s address will be used for purposes of school registration. This can sometimes be a difficult issue to resolve, especially when the parents have equal time sharing. In some cases, the parents agree that the child(ren) will go to the best-rated school in either parent’s school boundary. Of course, the Parenting Plan will also state the time sharing schedule for each parent. This includes regular weekly time sharing, summer vacation, winter break, spring break and holiday time sharing. Some parents want every holiday listed and others may only want “major holidays,” such as Thanksgiving and New Year’s. Other issues that are contained within the Parenting Plan include travel outside of the state and outside of the United States, pick up and drop off responsibilities, extra-curricular activities for the child(ren) and financial contribution from each parent. The goal in each case to have the parents come to an agreement as to how to raise their child(ren) and memorialize it in this document. Judges would much prefer that the parents make these decisions and not the courts.

s a father, I am incredibly proud to see my children grow into upstanding young adults. Fortunately, they have been blessed with the smarts, athleticism, social graces and opportunities that led them down a path to success. As Sheriff, I play a special role in protecting, encouraging and helping not only my children, but all Broward children. These fine young men and women are the next generation of teachers, lawyers, doctors, law enforcement officers and leaders. And they deserve every opportunity to succeed. One of my greatest passions in life is working with children. As a high school and youth league football coach for many years, I witnessed the boys and girls I coached mature and grow. I also saw them make a fair share of mistakes. That’s part of growing up, too. The lessons we learn from our mistakes when we are young help build the strong moral character of our adulthood. For many, however, youthful indiscretions have created far-reaching consequences that can destroy future opportunities. Since becoming Sheriff in 2013, it has been a cornerstone of my administration to ensure the positive development of many of our county’s youth. I made a commitment to the public that BSO will work tirelessly to keep kids out of jail. Through the Civil Citation program – which allows eligible juveniles to be placed into a diversion program instead of facing criminal arrest – we have produced remarkable results in breaking the “school house to jail house” pipeline. Instead of a permanent arrest record, which could severely limit opportunities later in life, a youth who commits an eligible misdemeanor gets a second chance to lead a productive life through the non-criminal, civil citation process. The program has been a massive success with only 5% of youth returning to crime. It also has the added bonus of saving millions of dollars that would otherwise be spent on juvenile criminal justice system operations. To further the effort of keeping children in schools and out of jail, BSO joined with the School Board and State Attorney as charter partners in the innovative PROMISE (Preventing Recidivism through Opportunities, Mentoring, Interventions, Support and Education) Program agreement. PROMISE offers alternatives to arrests and suspensions through school counseling sessions and interventions. Routine, minor misconduct matters (fist fight, caught using marijuana, etc.) that were handled years ago as in-school disciplinary matters are once again being successfully handled that way again – without needlessly turning minor in-school teen misconduct into formal police criminal incidents. Since instituting PROMISE, school-related arrests have plummeted. In most instances, a student may receive up to four chances to complete the program and learn from a wrongdoing before the school turns the matter over to law enforcement. These students won’t have a criminal record and will have another chance to go on to lead productive lives. I’m often asked how many chances I am going to give these kids. My answer however many it takes until they get it right. Putting vulnerable adolescents in jail only teaches them to become career criminals. These programs, by contrast, help keep their records clean, teach them responsibility and give them a second chance for a better life. I am proud that BSO has made a difference for our youth with innovative programs and partnerships. Our success should always be measured by how many children we keep out of jail, not how many we lock up. For information, visit sheriff.org.

OCTOBER 2016 | OUR CITY DAVIE
ask the mayor
By Mayor Judy Paul
H
ere is the Davie update for September.
Patriot’s Day On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Often referred to as 9/11, the attacks resulted in extensive death and destruction, triggering major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism. Over 3,000 people were killed during the attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., including more than 400 police officers and firefighters. Western High School, under the direction of several Fire/Rescue and Police units from multiple municipalities, conducted a 9/11 ceremony in commemoration of the attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. As always, it was a moving ceremony. PACE On July 27, 2016, the Davie Town Council approved the Town’s participation in the county-wide Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) Program. This Broward County program allows property owners (residential and commercial) the opportunity to submit for PACE financing to make improvements to their homes or businesses. PACE is a financing program intended to assist property owners with financing energy efficient, wind resistant, and renewable energy improvements. Examples of the qualifying improvements for property owners include rooftop solar panels, solar water heaters, wind turbines, energy efficient air conditioning units, cool roofs, window replacements, impact windows, insulation, and more. Broward County has entered into a non-exclusive agreement with two PACE Providers: Renew Financial, which will be administering the “RenewPACE Program,” and Ygrene, which will be administering the “Clean Energy Program.” Property owners are encouraged to download and review the Renew Financial Residential Program Handbook and Ygrene Program Guidelines. Contractors who are interested in offering Qualifying Improvements within Broward County must meet the PACE Provider Standards and negotiate agreements with the County. Contractors must register with either or both of the Broward County PACE Providers. Bird Protection As a response to many resident complaints about trespassers who were catching ducks and inhumanely caging and shipping them out of the area, I requested the Town Attorney to craft an ordinance to protect birds in the Town of Davie. Included in this idea were the large number of burrowing owls, which were relocated to Davie, and those that have come on their own, according to our parks and Owl Lookout Park. We are also on the migratory bird flyway, so it seemed reasonable that we needed protection. It is good to know for all the people who don’t like the ducks that it is illegal to feed them and they are nature’s own mosquito control agents. They eat the mosquito larvae. Budget Process I am happy to say we are presenting a balanced budget with a small reduction in the millage rate similar to last year. The Town continues to service its 97,000+ residents; maintain its vast open space, parks and trail system; resurface roads; offer excellent children’s sports programs and senior activities; and work through the challenges of development. Thanks to a dedicated staff and a great Town Administrator, we continue to be a premier location in Broward County. As always, if you need any assistance or wish to contact me at Town Hall call 954-797-1030 or email me at jpaul@davie-fl.gov.

Pickup for Breast Cancer Is an Easy Way to Support the Cause
S
ince 1993 the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation has been committed to providing the resources necessary to fund programs that support their mission to end breast cancer. The household discard program, Pickups for Breast Cancer, is a great way for those who want to help by donating resalable items for a great cause.
This is a free, tax deductible home pickup service in South Florida including Martin, Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. All
types of household items including: clothing, clothing accessories, shoes, bric-a-brac, bedding, toys, electronics and resalable furniture, etc. are accepted. This program has proven to be successful since it has generated millions of dollars, which has funded numerous grants and programs, therefore helping their goal to end breast cancer. Michael Arena, Director of Merchandise Coordination, answered some commonly asked questions about the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation and its pick up service.
In one sentence, describe the key message of the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation. For the past
twenty two years, our mission is to end breast cancer through education, research and advocacy and it will be until a cure is found.
How does your pickup service work? We offer
free, tax deductible home pickup services for house-
hold discards throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Martin counties. Those who want to donate can visit www.pickupsforbreastcancer.org and click on the “Schedule a Pickup” tab for easy and fast service. Scheduling a pick up is convenient online or by calling 1-888-492-4483.
What distinguishes you from your competition? Our pickup service is reli-
able, timely and friendly. The Florida Breast Cancer Foundation is a fully recognized 501(c) (3) charitable organization authorized by the IRS and United States Government to issue official tax deduction receipts for all donations.
