Happy Thanksgiving

A

round this time of the year , we take a deep

breath and wonder where the time went. The sweltering summer heat is slowly becoming an item of the past, the awesome summer vacation pictures and memories have moved to the back of our minds, and our kids have settled back into their school and sports routines. Now that the Halloween sugar rush has worn off, we are already in full preparation for the Thanksgiving holiday. Wow! Thanksgiving already? In the blink of an eye the entire year seems to have gone by. Another fantastic year of enjoying time with family, friends and neighbors, of being there for each other through good times and bad, and of enjoying each other’s companionship. As we sit down this year with our loved ones from near and far to indulge in a delicious turkey feast, let's give thanks for all the little blessings we have received throughout the year, let’s be generous to those who need our help, and let’s continue to enjoy each other. Happy Thanksgiving everybody! Sincerely, Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

1st Annual FD NOW 5K Run/Walk for a Cure Is a Success By Debby Teich

Eric Alterman, #302, crosses the finish line with his parents and friend, Savannah Perry.

M

ore than 200

people gathered to raise money for Familial Dysautonomia (FD), a rare, life-threatening, genetic, neurologic disease present at birth. Carol Alterman of Davie, who is Florida Regional Representative of FD NOW, organized the 1st Annual FD NOW 5K Run/ Walk for a Cure at Nova Southeastern University.

Her 17-year-old son, Eric, is battling the disease. “Since there are only a few families in the area with FD, most people are not familiar with the disease,” said Alterman. “The event helped raise awareness and $40,000 to help fund research. We want other people who have the disease to know that they are not the only ones suffering.” The inaugural event took participants through the streets of Davie, past the Dolphin Training Camp and onto the Nova Southeastern University Campus. Eric’s high school hockey team pushed him in his wheelchair for most of the 5K. At the end of the race, he was able to get out of his wheelchair and cross the finish line on his own. Afterwards, he gave his mom a huge hug. In people with FD, the autonomic nervous system controls automatic body functions, such as breathing, digestion and circulation. They have an impaired autonomic nervous system, rendering each breath, swallow and heartbeat unde-

pendable and erratic. They are prone to wide swings in blood pressure and to life-threatening autonomic crisis. Carol and her husband Steve were not aware that both of them carried the gene for FD until Eric was diagnosed with the disease as an infant. Although he has had a feeding tube since he was nine months old, he is now able to eat most of his food by mouth. He has received constant therapy, which has allowed him to thrive and grow. His parents have done their best to mainstream him by putting him in public school since the age of three. “We have tried to make Eric’s life as normal as possible in his chaotic world,” said Carol. Eric currently attends Western High School, where he is the manager for the ice hockey team. Last year, he was named Team Manager of the Year by the ice hockey league. In 2013, Eric had scoliosis surgery, which has helped his health. “We are thankful that Eric continues to remain relatively stable and look forward to the next big breakthrough,” said Carol. For information on Familial Dysautonomia, visit www.fdnow.org.

Cooper City Community Gathered for Flag Retirement Ceremony By Debby Teich

F

or more than 200 years , the American flag has been the sym -

bol of our nation’s strength and unity. When a flag becomes worn, torn, faded or badly soiled, it should be replaced with a new one. The old flag should be “retired” with dignity and respect, which consists of burning it. Approximately 125 people recently attended Cooper City’s Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony, held at the Cooper City Community Center. “This event is important, because it provides a means of honoring those brave men and women who show courage and fortitude in serving our community and our nation at-large,” said Annie Boyle, Cooper City Recreation Department. “These individuals are willing to risk their lives to protect the welfare of others and deserve the utmost respect for doing so.” Members of Boy Scout Troop 118 and the New River Girl Scouts led the retirement ceremony, which included participation from local area veterans, as

well as members of American Legion Post 321 and local BSO police and fire units. Although they disposed of four flags, only one was part of the actual ceremony. During the ceremony, the boy scouts and girl scouts were careful to follow proper procedures while cutting up the flag. They separated the stars (canton) from the stripes and then cut each individual stripe. As each stripe was cut free, a veteran was invited up to place the stripe onto a shovel and salute as the stripe was then placed into the fire. This process was repeated for each stripe. Anyone interested in retiring a worn flag should drop it off at their local American Legion post or contact a local Boy Scout troop. For information, visit www.coopercityfl.org.

15th Annual Forest Ridge Holly Day Parade and Fair Returns By Debby Teich

O

ver 500 Davie residents are expected to gather to enjoy

fun, food and festivities at the 15th Annual Forest Ridge Holly Day Parade and Fair on December 6, at 1pm. The parade will start at the entrance to Forest Ridge and run west towards Old Orchard Rd. “Since this is our 15th Annual Parade, we promise to dazzle our neighbors more than ever,” said Kitty Preziosi, event leader and co-founder of the parade in 2000. “Every year hundreds of people lining the streets have been thrilled by the sights and sounds of our annual holiday tradition.” The theme of this year’s parade is “Razzle Dazzle.” It will include floats, classic cars, dignitaries, marching bands and more. It is not too late to help decorate a float, ride on one, or enter your own. Friends and neighbors have created floats by decorating cars, boats, scooters and even dogs. The judges will award prizes for best parade participation.

More than 40 groups are expected to participate. Many will throw candy and beaded necklaces to the crowds that line the streets. Some of this year’s VIPs will include the Davie Mayor Judy Paul, Town Councilwoman Susan Starkey, Grand Marshall Billy the Marlin, local school principals, the Police & Fire Chiefs of Davie, the Forest Ridge Woman’s Club, Boy and Girl Scout troops, Seminole Indian Princesses, South Florida Cloggers, marching bands, twirlers, local beauty queens, the Grinch, Santa and more. The parade is also sponsoring a food drive with the Hope Outreach Center. Anyone who donates food will receive a free raffle ticket. In addition, the Humane Society will be bringing its Mobile Adoption Unit, so the public can adopt pets on the spot. After the parade, the crowd will move to the Forest Ridge Greens for the fair. There will be refreshments, hot dogs, baked goods for purchase, inflatable fun, face painting, balloon twisting, games, arts and crafts, raffles, a men’s frozen t-shirt contest, a finger printing lab for kids, and more. There will also be live stage performances by parade participants, including South Florida Cloggers, Woman’s Club Diva dancers, and many others. All parade entries and distributed materials must be pre-approved by the committee. For information, to volunteer, or to enter a float, visit www.hollydayparade.com.

FAST TRACK Training For Team Athletes

AG USA is a progressive gym where athletes can advance quicker in team levels based on their abilities.

Director of Gymnastics Alicia Sacramone

There are gyms that force their team athletes to move one level per year, but not at TAG where the objective is to build enough strength and skills throughout the year for athletes to safely advance one to two levels within a season. Olympian Alicia Sacramone and Coach Kristina Comforte select athletes to participate in the Fast Track program. Most are TOPs Team trained and all have the passion and desire to advance quicker than one level per year. USAG athletes from Levels 2-5 may schedule an evaluation with Alicia Sacramone for TAG USA’s Fast Track gymnastics program. Perhaps your child should be part of TAG USA’s FAST TRACK program?

Davie/Cooper City Prepare for Annual Holiday Celebrations By Debby Teich

T

he winter holiday season is upon us and there are many ways

for area residents to celebrate with friends and family.

Davie

✻✻ On December 3, at the Christmas Tree, Menorah and Kinara Decorating Contest, school and civic groups are invited to decorate the menorahs, kinaras and Christmas trees that line the entrance to the Davie Town Hall. They make their own decorations and the Town will provide the lights, Christmas trees, menorahs and kinaras. A holiday lunch will be served. Prizes will be awarded for the best decorations at the Lighting of the Greens event. For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov.

✻✻ On December 7, from 12noon-3pm, Santa will be visiting the Old Davie School Historical Museum with lots of goodies for the children. Children can visit and have their picture taken with Santa, go for pony rides, enjoy a petting zoo, play old fashioned games, and more. This free fun-filled day is made possible by the efforts of the Davie Historical Society and donations from the local community. For information, visit www.OldDavieSchool.org ✻✻ On December 7, from 6pm-9pm, bring the family to Davie’s Winter Lighting of the Greens and Snow Play at Town Hall. Watch the Mayor and Town Council turn on thousands of holiday lights to officially proclaim it “holiday time” in Davie. Visit a display of over 50 beautifully adorned Christmas trees, menorahs, and kinaras, as you enjoy free refreshments and a holiday magic show. For those who miss snow, 20 tons of the “white stuff” will be blown for the children to enjoy during the event.

✻✻ At 6:15pm, the Jingle Bell Parade will begin and the South Florida Trail Riders will parade their decorated horses down Orange Drive, between SW 67th and Rodeo Way. Santa Claus will also arrive on a fire engine. After the parade, residents can have their pictures taken with Santa in the Town Hall Building, for a small fee, or just visit with the big guy for free. There will be free petting farm, bounce houses, climbing walls and more. The winners of the tree decorating contest will also be announced. For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov. ✻✻ On December 13 and 14, at 9am, don’t miss the Town of Davie Green Fair and Holiday Craft Show, at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds, 4271 Davie Road. Purchase country crafts and traditional arts as holiday gifts. It is also an eco-friendly educational opportunity to discover new “green products,” a friendly economical way to live, and the importance of minimizing your “carbon footprint.” Green-minded business will explain why green living can create a better tomorrow. Admission is free to the general public. Space available to vendors for a fee. For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov.

Cooper City ✻✻ On December 5, the City of Cooper City will kick off the holiday season with Light Up Cooper City, from 6 to 9 pm, at Cooper City’s Memorial Park, located between City Hall and the Community Center on 90th Ave. Take a stroll in the park and enjoy the mini twinkle lights and luminaire candles, community youth performances, children’s activities and indoor craft show. Children, ages one to eight, can also visit with Santa at the gazebo. Bring canned food items to benefit the needy. Donation boxes will be located next to the stage and inside the Community Center. For information, visit www. coopercityfl.org. ✻✻ On December 6 at 1pm, over 500 Davie residents are expected to gather to enjoy fun, food and festivities at the 15th Annual Forest Ridge Holly Day Parade and Fair. The parade will start at the entrance to Forest Ridge and will include floats, classic cars, dignitaries, marching bands and more. After the parade, the crowd will move to the Forest Ridge Greens for the fair, with refreshments, inflatable fun, face painting, balloon twisting, games, arts and crafts, and more. Miami Dolphins Host Punt, Pass & Kick Clinic By Debby Teich

T

he M iami Dolphins , in conjunction with

the NFL, recently held a Punt, Pass & Kick Clinic at their training facility in Davie. The clinic featured nearly 200 children learning the fundamentals of punting, passing and kicking from current and former Miami Dolphins players. “Having current players teach these techniques to the kids is invaluable,” said Troy Drayton, Miami Dolphins Manager of Youth and Community Programs. “As an organization, we want to provide as many resources as we can to our youth. We would love to have the national championship winners wearing Miami Dolphins jerseys, and this is the first step in getting there. Hopefully some of these kids advance through the local round into sectionals and eventually the team championships.” The clinic started with Miami Dolphins punter Brandon Fields teaching the kids the proper way to hold and drop a football when punting. He also taught

them the importance of hitting the ball with their shoelaces and making sure the laces are pointed upwards to avoid a “shank.” After walking the group through the techniques, the kids broke up into eight groups and practiced with the alumni coaches Lousaka Polite, Deon Dyer, Troy Stradford, Lorenzo Hampton, Chris Conlin, Elmer Bailey, Ed Perry and James Brown. Next, kicker Caleb Sturgis taught the participants how to kick off of a tee. He showed them how to place the ball on the tee, take a three-step running start and follow through properly to kick the ball straight. After the lesson, they broke into groups to practice what they learned. Rookie quarterback Seth Lobato taught the final passing drill. He showed the kids the best way to grip a football and emphasized the importance of having a comfortable grip. He then showed them how to point their bodies at their target and follow through. After practicing in the passing drill, he spoke to them

Actors Community Theatre of Davie Presents Other Desert Cities By Debby Teich

T

his month , Davie residents can experi -

ence live theater right in their own neighborhood. The Actors Community Theatre of Davie will present Other Desert Cities by Robin Baitz. Performances will be held on November 14, 15, 21, & 22 at 8pm and November 15, 16, 22, & 23 at 2pm. “The plays are always very professionally done and you cannot beat the price,” said John Goodman, who has attended many of the productions. Other Desert Cities is a touching and hilarious play about family members facing secrets about their past. It is set in Palm Springs in 2004. As the Wyeth family prepares to celebrate Christmas, the adult daughter tells her family that her soon-to-be published book will provide startling revelations about them. In the 2012, 2013 and 2014 seasons, Other Desert Cities ranked in the Top 10 Most Produced Plays in the United States. It was also a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. ACT of Davie’s production of Other Desert Cities is directed by Ted Dvoracek, who also directed ACT’s production of The Shadow Box. It is produced by Fern Katz, who is also the president of ACT. The cast features Katy Algood, David Daugherty, Tom Falborn, Giova Raimondo and Lory Reyes.

There are many others involved in bringing the production to the stage. Some of them include: Christopher Harrington (set designer, set construction), Bob Moring (set construction), Charles Schray (lighting and sound construction), Board Members Carole Czvekus and Dana Fredebaugh (props and costumes), and Marcy Decker (stage manager). JoAnn Tiberio, Adele Robbins, as well as Board Members Barry Katz, John Hernandez, and Sylvia and David Alexander, helped with email blasts, ticket sales, refreshments and much more. Since 1999, ACT has provided residents with a way to enjoy local theater at affordable prices. It all started when an ad appear in the Davie Update asking for thespians. Several people responded and became the nucleus for the Town’s first (and only) community theatre. The volunteer group is budgeted by the Town of Davie and run by its Board of Directors. ACT’s board’s script committee selects three shows to produce every year and then sends out audition notices throughout South Florida. The director chooses cast members, who have ranged in age from 6 to 80 plus. Some are first-time actors, while others have been acting for years. The plays are performed over two consecutive weekends and often sell-out.

Cooper City Moms and Sons Spend Quality Time Together By Debby Teich

C

ooper City moms and their sons recently gathered for the

Mother Son Night of Fun at the Cooper City Community Center. Since 2002, this hometown event has been a way for moms and their sons, K – 5th grade, to enjoy a special evening together. Many of them return year after year.

Approximately 80 mothers and sons attended. They rotated around to different game and activity stations that related to the “Under the Big Top” theme. In addition, a DJ led games and played music for dancing. The event also included dinner. “This event provides a great opportunity for mothers and sons to bond through a variety of fun activities and a bit of friendly competition,” said Annie Boyle, Recreation Program Specialist. “As children become older and want their independence, it is especially important to build special and lasting memories while they’re young.” On November 14, Cooper City dads will have their turn at the Annual Daddy Daughter Dinner Dance held at Pioneer Middle School. The event, for ages 2nd grade and up, includes dinner, dancing and entertainment. If dad is unavailable, grandfathers, step-dads, and uncles are always welcome. The event is limited to Cooper City residents and reservations are required. For information, visit www.coopercityfl.org or call 954-434-4300, ext. 233.

Students Score High with Broward Tutorial Services By Debby Teich

preparation is only as good as the teacher in the room. For this reason, all tutoring is done by Michael ElDeiry and Adam Moss, or by tutors that we have hand-selected and trained.

What types of classes do you offer? We offer small group classes of

How do you help students decide between the SAT and ACT? BTS

eight or fewer students for the ACT, PSAT, and SAT. We also offer private tutoring for these tests, as well as one day, six-hour workshops before each exam. In addition, we offer tutoring for a variety of high school courses, including all math and science courses.

How important are the SAT and ACT? After the student’s transcript and grades, test scores are probably the most important factor in college admissions. They are also weighted greatly in consideration for scholarships.

What is your success rate?

Owner Mike ElDeiry works with students.

The great majority of our students see their scores increase greatly - over 300-500 points on the SAT and over 4-8 points on the ACT. We’ve seen students get greater increases as

administers a proprietary diagnostic test, which includes half of each test. We score them next to each other to determine whether the SAT or the ACT is a better test for the student. This also allows us to generate a baseline for the students and to familiarize them with each exam, so that they can be involved in the decision of which test to prepare for first.

What do you teach students about the tests? Some of the things we teach include: what is on the tests, how they differ from tests in school, how to approach them differently from school tests, what dangers lurk if they try to take them like school tests, how different concepts are tested, where to focus their time and energy, what traps to watch out for, and more.

What is the most useful tip for test taking? The best advice is to start preparing early! Most students typically take the tests 2-4 times. By starting early, they have sufficient time to prepare for the unknown, such as illness or sports and extra-curricular events on test days. We recommend that students begin studying no later than the very beginning of their junior year. Many contact us after receiving their sophomore PSAT scores and we develop a preparation plan. Broward Tutorial is located at 2883 Executive Park Drive, Suite 104, in Weston. s hair loss affecting you ? You ’ re not alone! I n

fact, nearly 1 in 3 people by age 30 have significant hair thinning or loss and with age this number increases significantly. Hair loss can be detrimental to one›s self-esteem and confidence. It can drastically change the way you perceive yourself and affect the way others react to you. The good news is... there are solutions. Many products occupy the market for hair loss treatments; however, most are not permanent solutions and can be costly over time not to mentions possible side effects. A permanent solution to obtain thicker, fuller, natural looking hair is by a procedure known as the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

What is FUE? The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a unique FDA approved technique, minimally invasive, eliminating the use of scalpels, staples and anesthesia. It simply harvests individual hair follicles from the back of the head where hair growth is dominant to be carefully re-implanted into the balding or thinning targeted areas, providing a natural re-distribution of hair. How does the FUE differ from other hair transplantation? The FUE method is an advanced hair transplant method that harvests individual follicles from the donor area without the use of scalpels or stitches, which means there is no linear scar. Other methods of hair transplantation use a linear incision in the back of the head to harvest the donor hairs. This method tends to be painful, healing time is longer, and it leaves a tell-tale scar if the client wears his/her hair short. Using the FUE method, there are no scars and no incision. As a result, healing is quicker. How long does it take? The hair transplant using the FUE is done in a single day. It is an outpatient procedure performed when the client is fully awake. The client is medicated so he/she feels no pain. Clients can expect to return to normal activity as quickly as the next day. Is the FUE suitable for both men and women? Yes, because the FUE is a minimally invasive procedure, it is a viable option for both men and women looking to restore their own hair with transplantation. Are you ready to take the next step to achieve a permanent solution and grow thicker, fuller, natural looking hair? To determine if you are a candidate for hair transplantation using the FUE method, call Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette Jr., D.O. for your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in Internal Medicine specializing in Functional Medicine, Hair Loss &Transplantation, IV Nutrition Therapy and Bio-Identical Hormone Pellet Therapy. want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding.

Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first.

Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more…

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that!

A friend of mine convinced me to give a Forty-five million Americans no longer have chiropractor a try. Davie Teen Creates Website to Promote Laughter By Debby Teich

S

eventeen -year - old G rant B esner of Davie is a big believer in

the saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Through his new website, www. llamamamahaha.com, he has been encouraging others to do the same. Llama Mama: Healing Through Humor aims to cheer up children that are dealing with trauma in their lives. Grant has always used humor to deal with difficult situations. In 2006, it helped him cope with the loss of his 11-year-old brother, who passed away after a fivemonth-long battle with Leukemia. “As a kid going through a truly horrific experience, there was nothing I really could do to escape the reality I was living in,” said Grant. “So, rather than keeping my head down, I got back on my feet and just tried to keep laughing and living, and it helped me get through it all. Life is way too short to be unhappy.” Last year, while he was volunteering at a hospital and joking around with kids, he was reminded of the powerful effect that laughter can have on healing. “By using humor, I was able to make the day better for the sick children,” said Grant. “I decided to create a funny website to cheer up kids who are struggling or dealing with loss. I would be able to draw upon my experience to help other kids dealing with similar issues.” In March 2013, he launched Llama Mama, an interactive website that features funny jokes, photos, videos and more. As editor, Grant makes sure that all of the content is appropriate for young children, and has no “triggers” that would set off any kind of negative emotional response. Some of his friends help him manage the website, including Alexander Lieberman, Carter Graves and Zachary Chase. Llama Mama has already been a huge success. Grant says child life specialists in over 14 of America’s top ranked children’s hospitals share the website with their patients. Additionally, Llama Mama has already received more than 10,000 page views. Despite the success, however, Grant still isn’t satisfied.

“This is something that has the potential to help a whole lot of kids, and we’re not going to stop until every child who needs a laugh knows about this website,” said Grant. “I want them to know there’s a place they can go to escape whatever they’re dealing with and just smile for a minute. It will make all the difference.” Grant is hoping to attend Duke, Brown or Yale in the fall 2015. He currently attends University School of NSU and has a 4.87 GPA. He is Interpretation Event Leader for his Speech and Debate team, captain of the swim team, and vice president of Student Council. He was recently named Top 6 in the country for Humorous Interpretation at the Yale University Speech and Debate Tournament.

Teen Builds Butterfly Garden at Old Davie School Museum to Earn Eagle Scout Rank By Debby Teich

S

eventeen -year - old Robert “B illy ” William is on his way to

sharing a prestigious title with notables like Neil Armstrong, Michael Bloomberg, Gerald R. Ford, Bill Gates Sr., James A. Lovell Jr. and many others. The American Heritage High School student recently received his Eagle rank from Troop 128. Billy joined the Boy Scouts of America at the age of nine as a Webelo and has been working his way toward becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the program. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges, as well as completing an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages. For his project, Billy decided to build a butterfly garden at the Old Davie School Historical Museum. A few years ago, someone created a sitting area as part of an Eagle Scout project. He selected a grassy spot that was directly across from it. “The interactive garden will teach young students about the life cycle of butterflies and what butterflies need to be able to survive,” said Billy. “It will also provide a beautiful spot for people who live in the nursing home next to the park, as well as the people who walk their dogs and the kids who play in the nearby playground.” Billy spent over 180 hours designing the garden, outlining the necessary steps, deciding which materials to use, and more. He presented the detailed plan to his Assistant Scoutmaster, the Old Davie School Museum and the Eagle Board of Review and received approval. “A big part of the Eagle project is to teach Scouts how much is involved in a project of this size,” said Billy. “It also helps us learn how to organize ourselves and our Scout helpers, so that the project can be completed within a brief build time.” Next, he solicited donations from friends and family and raised $620. He also received several donations from business, including plants (Broward Landscaping), Plexiglas for the pupae house (Prospect Plastics), and signs (One Day Masterpieces), as well as the text and art for the signs (Disney World). With the help of eight people, he was able to complete the butterfly garden in two days. Billy and his crew built the pupae house, cut railroad ties, shoveled dirt, drilled holes, banged in rebar, sunk the post for the pupae house and mounted it, arranged the signage, planted and more. Finally, as with all Boy Scout projects, they thoroughly cleaned the area so that they would “leave no trace.” For the next few days, Billy returned to the site to pin the pupae in the house and to water the plants. The end result was a raised garden that is populated with both feeder and host plants. Next to the garden is a pupae/chrysalis house that has four shelves to support the pupae, which hang down from each shelf. The front has a removable

sliding wall of Plexiglas, which allows observers to witness the metamorphosis of the pupae to butterflies. The Plexiglas wall is removable, so new pupae can be pinned to the shelves. “I learned a lot about butterflies and gardening through this process and wanted the kids who see it to get a deeper understanding of it too,” said Billy. “I am hoping that children on field trips will bring their own pupae and pin them in the house as part of their learning experience. Some groups may be fortunate enough to be there when a pupa yields its butterfly and watch as the butterfly dries its wings and then flies out through the holes we cut in the back of the house.” Since the primary mission of the Old Davie Schoolhouse Museum is to educate, Billy wanted to include signs that were similar to the ones he had seen at the Butterfly Exhibit at the Walt Disney World Flower and Garden Show. One sign includes information on the butterfly lifecycle and how to create your own butterfly garden, as well as photos and names of different types of butterflies. Another one challenges visitors to see how many they can find. Billy says that his he has learned a tremendous amount from completing the project. “I learned about perseverance, the value of overcoming obstacles and how much patience I would have to have,” said Billy. “I learned about the value of service and the impact that mentoring can have on a young man.” He says that he is grateful to Cliff Lockwood Sr., his assistant scoutmaster and mentor, for all of his help. “He has generously and graciously offered his time, knowledge and encouragement,” said Billy. “His generosity of spirit is a true representation of the Boy Scout ethic and values that made me want to be a Scout, as well as one of the only 4% who earn their Eagle rank.” Billy plans to continue with Scouting and will work on earning his Eagle Palms. He is also hoping to be an Assistant Scoutmaster for a local troop during his senior year of high school. Leslie Schroeder, Executive Director for the Old Davie School Historical Museum, was happy with the project. “The location of Robert’s project backs up to the wetland preserve in the middle of the park,” said Schroeder. “This area was perfect as it allows visitors to relax and overlook the newly planted garden and see the butterflies it attracts. It adds to the educational tour given to school children during the wetland preserve portion. We were thrilled with the outcome and the children get to see nature in action.” The Old Davie School Historical Museum is located at 6650 Griffin Road. Western High School Participates in Harvest Drive By Debby Teich

Volunteers help out at Western High School’s 2013 Harvest Drive.

T

wenty-two years ago, R enee H erman initiated a canned food

drive to help 25 families in need. As the effort grew and she needed more space, she moved her collection site to Western High School in Davie. The Harvest Drive is now a yearlong project that culminates in an event that takes place every Thanksgiving. It is a classic example of “children helping children.” This year, Herman hopes to provide 2,000 families in Broward County with a complete Thanksgiving dinner, plus a week’s worth of groceries. Students from over 190 schools, churches, temples, neighborhoods, girl/boy scout troops, and others will conduct drives and supply the Harvest Drive with non-perishable food, which is then distributed to the families. “There is so much need – more than ever,” said Herman. “We’ve made a com-

Be in Love wiTh Your Life

mitment to 2,000 families and we need huge collections and monetary donations.” Western High School is one of 12 high schools in Broward County that serve as distribution points. It continues to be the largest effort and the hub of the operation. Last year, the school helped 375 families and it is hoping for even more this year. The families, who are referred by social service agencies and Broward County school social workers, receive an average of 10 overflowing bags of groceries containing turkey, stuffing, vegetables, pies and more. They can also “shop” for clothing, shoes, books, and toys. At Western, the entire school gets involved in the Harvest Drive, including staff, administration and every club. They kicked off the effort, when students brought canned goods to the Homecoming Pep Rally. They are also collecting non-perishables, as well as gently used toys, books and clothing for the Community Fun Day, which will be held on November 9, at Weston Town Center, from 2pm-6pm. The school’s gym will be open for the community to make donations on November 21, from 3pm-10pm. On November 24, from 8am-10pm, the students and community volunteers will begin the arduous process of sorting and packing the food. On November 25, from 8am-4pm, the families will pick up their goods. Herman says that they still need corporate sponsors, as well as monetary or gift card donations from individuals to help pay for the turkeys, butter, pies, milk and other perishable goods. In an effort to fight hunger year round, the Harvest Drive has two on-going food pantry closets that are available for families who are recommended by a social worker. One of these is located at Western. To volunteer or to donate food, gently used clothing, toys and bicycles, visit the Western High School gym on November 21, from 3-10 or November 24, from 8am-10pm. For information on the Harvest Drive, visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com or call 954-444-5548.

Family law

By Evan Baron

T

hese days , many individuals going through a

divorce try to handle the matter without the assistance of an attorney. They feel that it is better to try and settle the matter without spending large sums of money on legal representation. In all honesty, simple divorces can easily be handled by the parties. Simple divorces are cases in which there are no minor children and no real assets or liabilities to divide. There is a great deal of assistance through the courthouse or the internet to “walk you through” the process. Sometimes, however, people can be as they say “penny-wise and pound foolish.” In an effort to save money on attorneys’ fees, they may wind up giving up too much or perhaps not receiving his/her share. An individual who represents him/herself is held to the same standards as a licensed attorney. A judge will not give an individual the benefit of the doubt, just because an attorney is not sitting by his/her side in court. This can often present a problem in a more complicated case. I have often reviewed Marital Settlement Agreements which were entered into without the assistance of counsel. Often these individuals come to see me after the fact, to request assistance in attempting to “get them out” of the Agreement. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to undo what has already been done. A Marital Settlement Agreement or a Mediation Agreement has the same validity as any binding contract. In addition, as I previously stated, individuals are expected to know the law. It is not an excuse to later say “I wasn’t represented by an attorney.” I have often been told by individuals who had initially attempted to represent themselves that judges don’t seem to listen to them in court. Now this could simply be a matter of perception or a true statement. It may also be because non-lawyers are not familiar with the rules of evidence. As such, certain testimony may not be permissible. A court proceeding is controlled by rules of evidence and rules of procedure, which are in many ways illogical and foreign to the average individual. Many attorneys offer free initial consultations and those that don’t usually charge a nominal fee for the initial meeting. If you have any doubts about the law as it pertains to your situation, it would be in your best interests to consult with an attorney. However, an attorney cannot ethically represent both parties in a divorce and therefore can only advise one of the parties. Therefore, initial consultations should take place without your spouse. Lastly, if you have considerable assets, such as real estate or a business, or you anticipate a time sharing issue, you should definitely consult with an attorney to discuss these matters. A little bit of experience can go a long way and ultimately save you money.

Can Chewing Gum Prevent Cavities in Your Child? By Dr. Maria Grosman

O

ver the last five decades , fluoride has been

added to community water supplies across the country. As a result, we have seen a 50% reduction of cavities in these communities, as well as a 50% reduction in the dental healthcare costs for children. The numbers are even higher when its use is combined with proper diet, oral hygiene techniques, and use of topical fluorides. Still the dental community searches for other methods of reducing the incidence of “caries” (cavities). Such a finding would be most helpful to those unable or unwilling to make use of fluoride. One of the more promising substances is xylitol. Xylitol is a sugar substitute derived from agricultural products. It has been around since the 1960’s, but has not been tested for use in humans for the purpose of oral health until the 1990’s. Most of the studies use chewing gum as the delivery system of choice. Optimal results are gained with three daily uses. This dosing achieves a reduction in plaque formation, reduces acid production, and interferes with the production of the specific bacteria which initiate cavity formation. Cumulatively, these attributes result in cavity reduction.

What seems most promising is the use of xylitol by new parents to reduce cavity formation in their newborns. Babies are not born with the bacteria which cause cavities. These bacteria are naturally transmitted to the mouth of a child by a parent or caregiver. This usually occurs through everyday contact such as sharing of food or blowing on a hot spoon. The use of xylitol has been shown to delay the transmission of some of the most deleterious bacteria and resulted in a decreased incidence of cavities for these children. In one particular study, xylitol chewing by mothers beginning three months after the delivery of a child for a period of two years resulted in a decreased incidence of cavities in the children till an average age of six years. Of course, with such positive results many new xylitol products have been launched into the marketplace. Companies are manufacturing a number of products such as mints, mouthwash and toothpaste. However, the only method of delivery clinically proven to have these effects is chewing gum. Personally, I can’t wait to bite into the first xylitol infused ice cream sundae!! Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. How Does a Home Purchase Affect the Economy?

The National Association of Realtors (NAR) compiled data from research conducted on the economic impact of a home purchase. After reviewing the data, they concluded that the total economic impact of a typical home sale in the United States is an astonishing $52,205. When a House is sold in the United States: ▸▸ $15,912 of income is generated from real estate related industries. ▸▸ New homeowners spend an additional $4,429 on consumer items, such as furniture, appliances, and remodeling. ▸▸ It generates an economic multiplier impact. There is a greater sense of community associated with owning a home; therefore, there is greater spending at restaurants, sports games, and charity events. The size of this “multiplier” effect is estimated to be $9,764. ▸▸ Additional home sales induce additional home production. Typically, one new home is constructed for every 8 existing home sales. Therefore, for each existing home sale, 1/8 of new home value is added to the economy, which is estimated in the U.S. to be $22,100. When you add the numbers up it comes to $52,205! Consider: ▸▸ The average American family has a net worth of $81,200. ▸▸ Of that net worth, 61.4% ($49,856) of it is in home equity. ▸▸ A homeowner’s net worth is over 36 times greater than that of a renter. ▸▸ The average homeowner has a net worth of $194,500, while the average net worth of a renter is $5,400. Note for Sellers: The number of Chinese buyers looking to purchase properties in the U.S. is expected to grow nationwide. Sixty-four percent of China’s millionaires have emigrated or plan to emigrate in the coming years, and they list the U.S. as their top destination, Chinese buyers tend to pay nearly twice the national average for homes. The median purchase of Chinese buyers is $523,148, and nearly three-quarters of their purchases are in cash. Homeownership is not only good for the economy in general but for your family’s wealth in particular. According to recent studies by the Federal government, homeownership is still a great way for a family to build wealth in America.

right so far – inventory is increasing and so have home values. Mortgage rates are still surprisingly low. Consider predictions for 2015 3Q:     ▸  4.6% - Fannie Mae     ▸  4.8% - Freddie Mac     ▸  5.2% - Mortgage Bankers Association     ▸  5.2% - National Association of Realtors Even an increase of half a percentage point can put a dent in your family’s net worth. The monthly payment (principal & interest only) on a $250,000 home today, with the current 4.1% interest rate, would be $1,208. If we take that same home a year later, the Home Price Expectation Survey projects that prices will rise about 4%, making that home cost $10,000 more at $260,000. If we take Freddie Mac’s rate projection of 4.8%, the monthly mortgage payment climbs to $1,364. Some buyers might not think that an extra $156 a month is that bad. But over the course of 30-year mortgage, you have spent an additional $56,160 by waiting a year.

here are many views regarding indications for

ACL Reconstructive Surgery such as age, activity/demand level and degree of instability. Most individuals, especially moderate to high demand athletes, regardless of age, who have a complete tear of their anterior cruciate ligament, as well as clinical and functional evidence of instability, are candidates for ACL Reconstructive Surgery. When considering the pediatric or adolescent population, there has been extensive debate in the literature over the last ten years. Initially, treatment was consistent with bracing, rehabilitation and activity modifications (cessation of sports); however, due to the noncompliance of this patient population and their persistent knee instability with daily activities, these patients will often have further injury to the chondral and/or meniscal surfaces, resulting in degeneration and functional impairment. Non-surgical treatment in this patient population is not advised. When considering ACL Reconstructive Surgery in pediatric and adolescent patients, age and amount of growth remaining becomes vital, as this may tailor the technique used to reconstruct the child’s knee. The major consideration is the potential risk of injury to the growth plate/physis resulting in growth disturbance before skeletal maturity. One surgical option is a physeal (growth plate) sparing procedure, which is an allsoft tissue technique considered in the younger athletes because of their amount of growth remaining. This procedure is often non-anatomic but does improve functional stability and completely avoids the growth plates. Another physeal sparing technique in this age group describes the use of drilling superficial bone tunnels within the epiphysis. With the use of fluoroscopic guidance during arthroscopy, this technique secures the graft in a relative anatomic position, but still avoids the growth plates. In a slightly older child, since most of the growth comes from the femur, one may consider a partial transphyseal approach. In this procedure, the graft is brought through a transtibial (physeal) tunnel and is fixed to the femur in a near anatomic position avoiding the physis. A surgeon will often use an all-soft-tissue graft and fix the graft away from the femoral and tibial growth plates, thus, avoiding growth disturbances. Transphyseal anatomic ACL Reconstructions is considered in adolescents and adults, as well as those children who have minimal growth left. This allows for anatomic graft placement by creating tunnels at the native origin and insertion sites of the original ACL. With this arthroscopic technique the surgeon drills through the growth plates and depending upon the age of the patient, one may consider soft tissue (hamstring) graft or bone patella tendon bone graft to reconstruct the ACL. The type of tissue used and fixation technique will depend upon the patient’s skeletal maturity and growth remaining. My gold standard for skeletally mature teenage athletes and young adults is bone patella tendon bone autograft with intraphyseal fixation. When there is a contraindication to using intraosseous fixation I will use hamstring autograft and fix the graft away from the growth plates. These two techniques provide excellent stability with no growth disturbance. I would advise against the use of cadaveric (allograft) tissue in this younger population as there is a higher incidence of graft failure with return to high demand sports. There are few indications where non-surgical treatment is advised. First is in the low demand sedentary individual who doesn’t describe functional instability in their day-to-day activities. Next is the young athlete who sustains a partial injury to the ACL but still presents with good clinical stability. In these patients I closely monitor and follow their progress and often advise for the use of a custom de-rotational brace when returning to their sport. The last patient is that patient who is unable, for medical reasons, to pursue surgery because of the potential inherent risks of anesthesia. For these patients I will often advise a physical therapy program, bracing and activity modifications. Alfred A. Ask the mayor

Davie Update By Davie Mayor Judy Paul

V

oting is what makes us strong . So let me

remind everyone that no matter what your party, beliefs or political fervor, getting to the polls and voting for the candidate of your choice, the constitutional amendments, or bond issues is essential. Remember, if you don’t vote, you can’t complain. Make sure your voice is heard. To find out more about the Water and Land Conservation, Medical Marijuana, and Prospective Appointment of Certain Judicial Vacancies, Amendments, the School Board Bond Issue, or the Children’s Services Council reauthorization bond, you should take the time to check out the appropriate websites and go to the polls with good background information. The same is true of the candidates. You can view a sample ballot on the Supervisor of Elections website. The Town’s premier Veterans Day Ceremony will be presented on November 11 at Veterans Park in east Davie. The program starts at 10am and usually lasts about an hour. This year we will honor World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans with brief remarks from those who were in the conflicts, a 21 gun salute, bag pipes and a riderless horse. In addition, Richie Supa, formerly of Aerosmith, will sing his original song, “Put a Face on Me.” Join us as we thank our veterans for their selfless service to our nation. Parking for the Veterans Day event will be located at the fenced, vacant lot on the corner of Davie Rd. and SW 38th Ct. Signs will be posted along Davie Rd. and at the parking lot for easy identification by the public. A shuttle bus will be available beginning at 9:30am and will run continuously between Veterans Park and the parking lot. Please use the satellite parking lot, as there will be no parking spaces available at the park other than special guests and for people with disabled parking permits. Christmas is coming early to Davie. On September 27, a TV crew descended on the Hammel residence on SW 26th Street, west of 130th, and began filming for a national contest to honor Christmas displays across the country. In an email, Brandon Hammel wrote: We wanted to share with you the amazing news that we have been chosen to take part in a nationwide Christmas decorating contest! The contest will be televised nationwide during this Christmas season on one of the big networks. The producer stopped by our house today and they will be filming tomorrow Saturday. They will be taking “before” and “after” videos. We will be working on our Christmas display extra early this year...the grand reveal will be October 30th. We look forward to putting the Town of Davie in the spotlight nationwide with our Christmas display. This will publicize our town in a very positive way to the whole U.S. We want to plan an awesome grand reveal, hopefully with live music. We would love for you to stop by if you are able and if you have any suggestions, please feel free to let us know. It’s going to be extra crunch time, but we are both amazed that this is happening. We wanted to sincerely thank you for being an inspiration to us. You inspired us to take our display to a brand new level. You made our dream come true and we are so proud this is happening in our home in Davie, FL, the best place to live! We are humbled to represent our town with our display to the whole USA.” Now that is the kind of news I love to receive. Good luck Brandon and Sonia!! If you have any questions or concerns about the Town of Davie, please don’t hesitate to contact me at 954797-1030 or jpaul@davie-fl.gov.

Protecting Yourself from Economic Crimes and Scams By Sheriff Scott J. Israel

ask the Sheriff

o one can ever be completely safe from a

scam or identity theft – not even the sheriff of Broward County. Earlier this year, I received two checks in the mail from a company purporting that they owed me money from a past transaction. But there was a catch: the company explained the checks were written to me in error for more than the amount owed to me. All I needed to do was deposit the checks and wire the company the difference. I knew right away that something was wrong. I directed BSO detectives to investigate, and they instantly recognized the two checks were worthless. If criminals try to scam the sheriff, they will certainly try to do it to you! The most effective economic crime, however, is one in which criminals steal your identity. This is a growing problem affecting millions of Americans every year. Using advances in technology, criminals can obtain and use your personal information easier than ever for their own illegal intent. Your identity can be stolen in a variety of ways: from your trash, over the phone or online (including from the computer records of stores in which you have shopped at in person). BSO is helping in the fight against identity theft. We provide residents a convenient, safe way to dispose of personal documents, check stubs, credit card offers, receipts and other items that might contain sensitive data through our free, monthly Shred-AThon events throughout Broward County. For a list of upcoming dates and times in your city, please visit www.sheriff.org. BSO, in collaboration with the Florida Department of Financial Services, also works to protect our seniors from economic fraud and scams. Operation SAFE (Stop Adult Financial Exploitation) provides free workshops for seniors, their caregivers and families to empower themselves against scammers. To schedule an Operation SAFE workshop in your community, contact our Economic Crimes Unit at 954-321-4200. Remember, you are the best line of defense in protecting yourself against identity theft and scammers. Best of all, it is easy to do. Do not leave financial bills or letters with sensitive information in your mailbox or in your vehicle. Never to carry your Social Security card in your purse or your wallet. Carry only the ID and credit cards you need. Leave the others locked in a secure place. Do not give credit card or Social Security numbers over the telephone to strangers who may call you. These individuals may pose as a bank, charity, the IRS, the police or even a friend or family member. Use more complex passwords on all online credit card, bank and phone accounts, and use different passwords on different accounts. Never use identifying information, such as your mother’s maiden name, the last four digits of your Social Security number or your birthdate as passwords. If someone has stolen or is using credit cards or checks that belong to you, immediately notify the financial institution which issued them. If you feel like you have been targeted or were victim to a scam, file an immediate police report with your closest law enforcement agency, and place a fraud alert by calling one of the three national credit reporting companies (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion) that keep records of your credit history. Finally, obtain a free copy of your annual credit report (www.annualcreditreport.com) to ensure there are no unauthorized accounts associated with you. As sheriff, I am committed to stopping these criminals. With your help, by being proactive and aware, together we can even stop scams before they happen. For information, visit www.sheriff.org.

Dining Out

Make Mealtime Memorable at Weston Diner and Blue Moon Diner by Stacey Bomser

B

etween work , school , sports and other activities, most families are hardpressed to find time to cook a healthy family dinner, let alone sit down together to enjoy it. Two popular restaurants are bringing families together for memorable meal times. Both Weston Diner and Blue Moon Diner specialize in serving traditional comfort foods, as well as gourmet delicacies, that taste just as good as home-cooked, if not better.

Do you have any specialty dishes you are known for? For breakfast you can’t beat

our huge omelets or “The Mess,” bacon, ham, sausage, cheese, and potatoes scrambled and served with toast. For lunch, I recommend any of our oversized salads or our crispy fish and chips. For dinner, one of our signature dishes is the Seafood Stuffed Grouper, or any of our fresh fish specials. We are also known for our homemade soups like our Seafood Chowder.

What distinguishes your restaurants from other casual dining establishments? Our goal was

to create restaurants where the food is fresh, delicious and so affordable that you could come by and dine every day. Both Weston Diner and Blue Moon Diner serve over 20 breakfast specials starting at just $3.49 on weekdays from 7-11am and over 30 lunch specials served daily from 11am to 3pm. We have daily dinner specials starting at $7.99 with options ranging from seafood to chicken to steak. We also offer a 99-cent kid’s meal from Tuesday through Sunday after 3pm. Kid’s meals are served with a soft drink and giant cookie or ice-cream.

Owner Sam Wong shares the secret to running two successful diners which have been satisfying hungry diners for over a decade.

Please describe your restaurants.

Weston Diner and Blue Moon Diner offer good home-style cooking at an affordable price. We serve classic hearty breakfast cuisine as well as a mixture of classic American dishes, seafood specialties and Latin-inspired entrees.

How long have you been in business? Weston Diner has been open

for 12 years and Blue Moon Diner for four years.

Why do you focus on fresh, homestyle cooking? We realize the economy

is tough and eating well on a budget can be a challenge for many families. However, both of our restaurants have a consistent focus on fresh food and great value. Our soups are homemade daily. Every Friday we serve New England Seafood Chowder that is to die for! We also use top quality ingredients to prepare our food. All of our burgers and our meatloaf are made from Angus ground chuck. We use choice grade beef for our NY Strip and Churrasco steaks. We use fresh salmon, never frozen, for our salmon dishes. We also use chunk light tuna for all of our tuna salads, and the list goes on and on.

Is there anything else you would like readers to know about Weston Diner and Blue Moon Diner? We offer take-out, delivery

What can diners expect to find when they visit Weston Diner or Blue Moon Diner?

Diners can expect to receive quality food with large portions at a very reasonable price. We are definitely not your typical diners. We use the diner name, but once inside our restaurants look like a comfy family-friendly restaurant. We care about our customers and will do anything we can to make your dining experience an enjoyable one.

and catering. We have two separate dining rooms at Blue Moon Diner that can accommodate any special occasion or party.

Weston Diner is located at 4484 Weston Road (at the corner of Weston Road and Griffin Road) and Blue Moon Diner is at 10076 Griffin Road (at the corner of Griffin Road and Nob Hill Road/Palm Avenue). The restaurants are open daily; hours are 7am-3pm on Monday, 7am-9pm Tuesday through Thursday and on Sunday, and 7am-9:30pm on Friday and Saturday.
