Happy Thanksgiving
W
ith the Halloween sugar rush slowly wearing off and the holiday season upon us, we take a deep breath and wonder where the time went. In the blink of an eye, the entire year seems to have gone by. Another year of our kids growing up and becoming young adults, of family, friends and togetherness, of being there for each other and enjoying each other’s companionship. When we sit down this month with our loved ones from near and far to indulge in a traditional Thanksgiving feast, let’s give thanks for all the little blessings we have received throughout the year. This holiday season, reach out to your friends, neighbors, co-workers and the less fortunate. Consider opening your heart (and maybe your wallet) to help to provide a holiday meal for those in need.

Teens to Design Gowns for the 10th Annual YAA Recycled Fashion Show by Debby Teich

t the Young At Art Museum’s 10th Annual Teen Recycled Fashion Show, teens will promote sustaining the environment with original, runway fashion designs. “Surrealism Restyled!” is the theme for the event, which will be held on November 13, at 7pm, at the Museum. youth. “As we celebrate 10 years of creative teen designers, this event has grown from a few teen participants to a full-blown, professionally staged fashion show,” said YAA Executive Director/CEO Mindy Shrago. “It now is one of the most popular community events in the area. The teen designers begin preparing during the summer and put in more than a hundred hours of work to take their designs from concept to runway.” Drawing inspiration from the Museum’s feature exhibition, Transformation of Echo: World of Dreams, by Fort Lauderdale artist Leah Brown, this year’s teen designers will choose a surrealist artist and use that artist’s palate and creative focus to design an original garment out of recycled materials. They will begin by conceptualizing the artist’s point of view as it relates to a specific environmental issue that occurred, or still is occurring, during the artist’s lifetime. Then, they will incorporate all of their findings into original wearable art, made from recycled and repurposed materials, including metallic mesh, newspaper, cardboard, egg cartons, canvas, remnant fabric, bottle caps, recycled plastics, splatter paint and more. Designers for Surrealism Restyled! include girls from YAA’s American Express Teen Leadership Program and the PACE Center for Girls, which provides girls and young women with an opportunity for a better future through education, counseling, training and advocacy. The high-energy event will feature music, hors d’oeuvres and libations, a recycled jewelry-making station, nail art, and more. Teen models will have their hair, nails and make-up styled by Kaizen Beauty Academy before they take to the runway to dazzle a panel of judges whose difficult task it will be to determine first, second and third place awards. “As a teaching institution, we are proud that Young At Art Museum hosts an event that not only educates about art, sustaining the environment, public speaking and more, but also brings together teens from diverse backgrounds who learn cooperative life lessons through creativity,” said Shrago. “That is as important as the enchanting evening where they enjoy the spotlight.” Young At Art is located at 751 SW 121 Avenue in Davie. General admission tickets to the Recycled Fashion Show are $35 per person. For information, call 954-424-5022 or visit YoungAtArtMuseum.org.

Experience the Excitement of the Southeastern Circuit Finals Rodeo By Debby Teich
O
n November 12, 13 and 14, thousands of rodeo fans will put on their finest cowboy boots and hats for the Southeastern Circuit Finals on at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. Gates open at 6pm each of the three nights, with performances starting at 7:30pm. This is the 7th consecutive year that the event will be held in “Cowboy Town.” The Davie Pro Rodeo is sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Audience members will have an opportunity to see some of the most talented rodeo performers in the country compete in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing, and bull riding. Contestants from the nine Southeastern States will compete for $160,000 in prize money, championship saddles, and championship gold and silver buckles. They will also vie for the chance to compete at the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo held in Kissimmee, Florida. Davie is the ideal setting for a rodeo, since much of Davie’s architectural style is modeled after the American West. The original Davie Rodeo Arena was built in
1946 by a few local cowboys and some neighborhood residents. The arena was expanded to meet the growing demand for a more versatile venue. Today, the Davie Arena on the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds is a 72,000 sq. ft. indoor/outdoor facility with a seating capacity of 5,000. It is the site for several rodeos, top name concert entertainers, monster trucks, horse shows, dog shows, car shows, air boat shows, specialty shows, industrial shows and more. Calvin Harris grew up on a horse ranch and considers himself to be a true cowboy. The Davie resident spent many years competing in rodeos in his youth. He plans to attend the Southeastern Circuit Finals with his two grandchildren. He bought them cowboy hats and boots, so they can go in style. “They have seen photos and heard stories, but I want them to experience it in person,” said Harris. “There is nothing like it! I am especially excited for them to experience it in my hometown.” For information, visit www.davieprorodeo.com.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 11/30/15) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAYMenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIScOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInATIOn, OR TReATMenT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Davie’s Actors Community Theatre Presents The Odd Couple, Female Version By Debby Teich
T
his month, Davie residents can experience live theater right in their own neighborhood. The Actors Community Theatre of Davie will be presenting The Odd Couple, Female Version. Performances will be held on November 13, 14, 20 and 21at 8pm, as well as November 14, 15, 21 and 22 at 2pm at the Davie Pine Island Multi-Purpose Center. “The plays are always very professionally done and you cannot beat the price,” said John Goodman, who has attended many of the productions. In this contemporary comic classic, Unger and Madison are at it again. In this female version of Neil Simon’s play, however, it is Florence Unger and Olive Madison. Instead of the poker party that begins the original version, Ms. Madison has invited the girls over for an evening of Trivial Pursuit. The Pidgeon sisters have been replaced by the two Constanzuela brothers, but the hilarity remains the same. ACT of Davie’s production of The Odd Couple is being directed by Phyllis Spear. Cast members include Fern Katz, William Roach, Rene Barrett, Linda Stein, Erin Craddock, Brenda Aulbach, Annya Bright and Bill Battaglia. ACT Board Members are actively involved in every production. They include: Christopher Harrington, Barry Katz, Carole Czvekus, Dana Fredebaugh, Sylvia Alexander, David Alexander and Bonnie Ladich (stage manager of The Odd Couple). There are also many dedicated volunteers, including Mary Ellen Meeks, Bob Moring, Adele Robbins, Marcy Decker, Bruce Bornstein, Jim Doan (assistant director of The Odd Couple) and Marie Seibel (program/postcard designer). “ACT could not survive without the dedication of our board, volunteers and wonderful audiences,” said Fern Katz, president and co-founder of ACT. Since 2000, ACT has provided residents with a way to enjoy local theater at affordable prices. It all started when an ad appear in the Davie Update asking for thespians. Several people responded and became the nucleus for the Town’s first (and only) community theatre. The volunteer group is budgeted by the Town of Davie and run by its Board of Directors.

ACT’s board’s script committee, headed by Barry Katz, selects three shows to produce every year. After board approval, they send out the call for directors and actors by sending emails through the ACT database and posting notices on several websites, including the Town of Davie website. The director chooses cast members, who have ranged in age from 6 to 80 plus. Some are first-time actors, while others have been acting for years. The plays are performed over two consecutive weekends at the Davie Pine Island Multi-Purpose Center and often sell-out. Upcoming productions include: Deathrap by Ira Levin, on February 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21 and Miracle on South Division Street by Tom Dudzik, on May 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22.

All productions are held at the Davie Pine Island Multi-purpose Center, 3801 S. Pine Island Rd. Tickets are $12 at the door; $10 in advance or $8 for groups of 10 or more. This system offers a variety of class types and sets. Some are focused solely on cultivating internal energy, while others are focused on transforming the average person into the ultimate athlete - all in the process of striving for “Moksha” or the liberation of self.

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement
High Blood Pressure– the Silent Killer Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette
H
igh blood pressure is a serious health condition that cannot be ignored—the consequences could be deadly. About 80 million Americans have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, according to the American Heart Association. Functional Medicine offers natural treatments to lower High Blood Pressure Blood pressure is the amount of force exerted on your arteries as your heart beats. If the flow of the blood is high, the tissue that makes up the walls of those arteries stretch and become prone to ruptures causing conditions such as heart attack, stroke, vision loss, memory loss and kidney failure. High blood pressure has been called the silent killer, because it can literally do that while patients experience no symptoms. It is also one of the factors associated with metabolic syndrome. Several studies have linked high blood pressure to cognitive decline. A recent study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease highlights a correlation between high blood pressure during mid-life years and cognitive problems later on in life. Scientists studied subjects 50-60 years old and tested them several years later (when patients were in their 80s) and found that those with high blood pressure during their mid-life years scored more poorly on tests of attention and execution function. The good news is that there are natural treatments to prevent and treat high blood pressure. If you are suffering from this condition, these are some easy changes you can implement: ▸▸ Consume more garlic: Researches from China found that garlic reduced both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in subjects with hypertension. ▸▸ Take Vitamin D: In a study of 146,500 subjects, scientists found that for every 10% increase in plasma vitamin D, there was a drop in both systolic and diastolic blood pressures. ▸▸ Add flaxseed powder to your diet: In a study of over 1,000 subjects, researchers found flaxseed supplementation lasting longer than 12 weeks resulted in reduction of diastolic and systolic blood pressures. Powder was found to be more effective than oil. ▸▸ Consume Omega-3s: A large-scale meta-analysis in the U.S found Omega-3s to be effective in lowering blood pressure among untreated hypertensive subjects. ▸▸ Maintain a healthy weight: American researchers found that even a five-pound weight gain can negatively affect blood pressure. The study established a direct correlation between visceral fat and high blood pressure. Even healthy individuals who exercise frequently may suffer from high blood pressure due to genetic factors. However, they should not simply accept this as a fact, but seek appropriate treatment instead. At Bellissimo, we can help patients by performing an in-depth study to discover what’s causing the spike in blood pressure. We then educate patients on any needed changes in lifestyle and prescribe natural remedies in individualized dosages to correct the problem. It is imperative to be treated with the proper dosage, purity and form of medical grade nutraceuticals, as some products may cause more harm than good. Let us direct you on your journey to optimized health! Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. Cooper City High School’s Sound of Pride Invited to Perform in London

London. In addition to performing in the parade, they will visit Westminster Abbey, the Parliament, Big Ben and other well-known sights. “It has been approximately 15 years since the Cooper City High School band has had an opportunity to travel,” said Wilson. “Music is universal. It is important for the students to hear different types of music, (l to r): Wendy Doll, principal; Robert Davis, Deputy Mayor of the city of Westminster and Senior Patron watch other bands per- Lord of the London New Year’s Day Parade; and Chandler form and learn different Wilson, Cooper City High School director of bands perspectives.” Wilson will be busy over the next two years. He will work on preparing all of the students, including incoming 7th and 8th graders, for the musical performance. The band will hold fundraisers and search for corporate sponsors to help raise money for the trip, which will cost approximately $3,000 per student. The students will also have to learn new techniques for performing in a parade, which requires them to play non-stop for three to four miles. Before he can focus on London, however, Wilson will be getting the marching band ready for a 2016 New Year’s Day performance at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. They will be competing against 14 bands from across the country. If they win, they will be recognized at the pre-game. Either way, they will be part of mass performance during the half time show. They will also be performing at Jackson Square.
hen Chandler Wilson, Director of Bands, arrived at Cooper City High School two years ago, he promised to take the program to a whole new level. With a recent invitation to perform in London, England’s 2018 New Year’s Day parade, he is well on his way to achieving his goal. “We are excited to bring our high energy level and school spirit to London and everywhere else we go,” said Wilson. After the school received an email letting them know that they would be invited to perform, Robert Davis, Deputy Lord Mayor of the city of Westminster and Senior Patron of the London New Year’s Day Parade, flew from London to Cooper City to make the official announcement to the students and faculty. The school’s band and color guard performed for Davis, who was dressed in a ceremonial red robe. “The City of Westminster and the London’s Mayor’s Association take great pleasure in extending an invitation to the Cooper City High School Sound of Pride marching band and wind ensemble,” said Davis. Wilson says that he expects approximately 200 students to make the trip to

Nova High School Students Win Dolphins Tickets During Financial Literacy Contest Kick Off School News
By Debby Teich

licia Rolle and Chanil Bennett, both 10th grade students at Nova High School in Davie, won tickets to a Miami Dolphins football game for answering questions correctly during the BankUnited 4 Downs for Finance kickoff event at the school. Miami Dolphins Wide Receiver Jarvis Landry and BankUnited, a corporate partner of the Miami Dolphins, are teaming up to promote the financial literacy contest for high school students. It is designed to foster financial literacy at an age when many students are beginning to earn their first paychecks. “BankUnited is honored to partner with Jarvis and the Miami Dolphins to promote the importance of learning about money from an early age,” said BankUnited State President of Florida Thomas M. Cornish. “Jarvis has worked incredibly hard for everything he has accomplished both on and off the field, and his story of perseverance will inspire fans and young people everywhere.” Landry surprised students at Nova High School and engaged them in lessons and games to introduce the importance of financial literacy. He shared personal stories of how growing up in Louisiana influenced his outlook on budgeting and saving. “In football, you get a jump start on life in the financial world,” said Landry. “It’s so much more important, however, to know that you have Photo (l to r): Chanil Bennett, BankUnited State the opportunity to save and to President of Florida Thomas M. For me to come out and be able to inspire these kids to follow the right financial footsteps is what I’m here for.” Landry discussed a variety of helpful money tips, such as: ▸▸ Earn money by getting a parttime job or helping mom and dad around the house. ▸▸ Make a budget; spend less than you earn and make sure there is enough left over to Photo (l to r): Elicia Rolle, BankUnited State cover unexpected expenses. Be ambitious enough that you have to work for it but realistic enough that the goal is achievable. Through December 20, full-time Florida students, ages 13 to 18, can register for the contest at www.4downsforfinance.com. They can also access age-appropriate money tips throughout the football season, and submit an essay on a financial literacy topic. Everyone who enters will have a chance to win a football autographed by Landry and have his or her name read live on the radio during a game broadcast. One student will win a $1,000 cash prize and a visit with Landry. For more money tips or to register for 4 Downs for Finance, visit www.4downsforfinance.com.
Italian Students Visit Their “Twins” at AMHS By Debby Teich
A
fter spending time with their “twins” in Italy, students from Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School (AMHS) had an opportunity to host their new friends in America. Twenty Italian students visited the United States for the first time to attend AMHS. It was all part of the International Cultural Exchange program, which was established in 2012 by Principal Richard P. Jean. The students first met five months ago, when AMHS students and chaperones visited Palermo, Sicily, Italy. They spent two weeks living and eating like true Italians. The AMHS students attended the Liceo Scientifico Galileo Galilei High School, which specializes in the sciences. The Italians recently had an opportunity to see how their American friends live. Wearing AMHS uniforms, they were exposed to a new school culture, which included learning how to use their McCarthy issued iPads, receiving a school ID, taking a campus tour and attending classes with their “twins.” The “twins” also found time to tour the area together. They took a trip to the Seminole Indian reservation, where they explored a Chickee village replica and learned about the history and culture of the Seminole Indians. In the Everglades, they went on airboat and swamp buggy rides, and enjoyed a native animal exhibit and show. At University of Miami, they attended an interactive

workshop, where Professor Annette Torres discussed the differences between United States and Italian Law. They also attended a Marlins baseball game, took a day trip to Islands of Adventure in Orlando and spent time with their host families. At the first all-school mass of the year, celebrated by Father Brendan Dalton and Father Jean Jadotte, Italian student Andrea Cusumano sang “The Joy of Life” in Italian. The mass also included the commissioning of 30 McCarthy students as Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist. “The two weeks flew by,” said Gloria Garcia, Archbishop McCarthy’s Cultural Exchange Coordinator. “The cultural exchange experience was wonderful for the students, families, and chaperones. Four weeks together and we became as one, a large extended family.”

he entire upper school and faculty at NSU University School recently participated in “Keep the Beat Alive,” a hands-only CPR course that left them more prepared to help someone survive a cardiac emergency. Senior Emily Africk, president of American Red Cross (ARC) Club, organized the event. “Citizen CPR can potentially save lives of people around us,” said Emily. “This is a great event that spreads awareness and prepares more citizens for emergency situations.” According to the American Heart Association, 70 percent of Americans may feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency, because they either do not know how to administer CPR or their training has significantly lapsed. Since four out of five cardiac arrests happen at home, if (l-r) Shannon Williams, A.J Blades Jr., Rhett Tiger and Angelo Narvaez called on to administer CPR in an emergency, the life you save is likely to of the first schools in the state to champion a training of this magnitude, and ARC be someone at home: a child, a spouse, a parent or a friend. If you were in this situation, you would want someone to be able to help you.” Throughout the year, ARC Club members participate in a variety of health and safety preparedness projects, such as Flu Awareness Week and Trick or Treat for Fire Safety. “Keep the Beat Alive” is the club’s largest project. “This club educates and empowers students with skills to prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies and disasters,” said Emily. “We also participate in humanitarian activities in our community and the world under the guidance of the NSU University School Red Cross Club members, club sponsor, and Red Cross volunteers American Red Cross Broward County Chapter.” help organize the annual hands-only CPR training for Upper School students.

wenty-three years ago, Renee Herman initiated a canned food drive to help 25 families in need. As the effort grew and she needed more space, she moved her collection site to Western High School in Davie. The Harvest Drive is now a yearlong project that culminates in an event that takes place every Thanksgiving. It is a classic example of “children helping children.” This year, Herman hopes to provide 2,200 families in Broward County with a complete Thanksgiving dinner, plus a week’s worth of groceries. Students at more than 190 schools, as well as churches, temples, neighborhoods, girl/boy scout troops and others will conduct drives in order to supply the Harvest Drive with nonperishable food that will be distributed to the families. “We are teaching the children that together we can create a culture of giving,” said Herman. “We’ve made a commitment to 2,200 families and we need huge collections from our students and community, as well as monetary donations to

achieve our goal.” Western High School is one of 13 high schools in Broward County that serve as distribution centers. It continues to be the largest effort and the hub of the Harvest Drive operation. Last year, the school helped 375 families and it is hoping for even more this year. The families, who are referred by social service agencies and Broward County school social workers, receive an average of 10 overflowing bags of groceries containing turkey, stuffing, vegetables, pies and more. They can also “shop” for clothing, shoes, books, and toys. At Western, the entire school gets involved in the Harvest Drive, including staff, administration and every club. The school kicked off the effort, when students brought canned goods to the Homecoming Pep Rally. The school’s gym will be open for the community to make donations on November 20, from 3pm-9pm. On November 23, from 8am-10pm, the students and community volunteers will begin the arduous process of sorting and packing the food. On November 24, from 8am-12noon, the families will pick up their goods. Herman says that they still need corporate sponsors, as well as monetary or gift card donations from individuals to help pay for the turkeys, butter, pies, milk and other perishable goods. In an effort to fight hunger year round, the Harvest Drive has two on-going food pantry closets that are available for families who are recommended by a social worker. One of these is located at Western High School. To volunteer or to donate food, gently used clothing, toys, games, books and bicycles, visit the Western High School gym on November 20, from 3-10 or November 23, from 8am-10pm. For information on the Harvest Drive, visit www.harvestdriveflorida. com or call 954-444-5548.

O
n July 1, 2015, the Town of Davie began offering a Code Enforcement Lien Reduction Amnesty Program for a limited time period. Through this program, any affected property and business owner may take advantage of this opportunity to obtain a reduction and release for outstanding code enforcement fines and liens on their Davie property. We encourage affected parties to take this opportunity to contact the Amnesty Program Coordinator, Danny Stallone, or Program Administrative Secretary, Grace Farrar, at 954-6938237, to determine their eligibility, settle outstanding code enforcement fines and liens, and to make an appointment for a code inspection. Amnesty program applications will be accepted through December 31, 2015, at 12pm.
Eligibility criteria
▸▸ The amnesty program is offered to property and business owners who are currently in compliance with all codes and ordinances in the subject code enforcement case. ▸▸ The property owner or approved designee must schedule a re-inspection by a code compliance inspector to ensure that the subject property is in compliance and may qualify for entry into the amnesty program. ▸▸ Any property owner with outstanding nuisance abatement or cost recovery fees on the subject property will have such costs added to the approved amnesty lien reduction balance amount.
Terms of the Amnesty Program
▸▸ A nonrefundable application fee of $75.00, to be paid upon submittal of an application to enter into the amnesty program. ▸▸ Eligible homeowners, rental, and commercial property owners may settle by paying 15% of outstanding fines and liens. ▸▸ If a determination of ineligibility is made, the applicant has to reapply with another nonrefundable fee during the program duration period to initiate the re-inspection and the review for a determination of compliance and eligibility. ▸▸ Upon authorization by the Town and payment of approved reduction amount within 60 days of the approval or the program end date whichever occurs first, the Town of Davie will issue a Satisfaction of Lien to the property or business owner for each outstanding fine or lien settled during this amnesty program. ▸▸ Failure to completely pay the entire lien reduction amnesty amount within 60 days of Town approval or prior to the final deadline of the program, December 31, 2015, whichever comes first, shall cause the fine or lien to revert back to the original amount plus interest. Don’t forget to join us for the Southeast Circuit Rodeo Finals in Cowboy Town at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at 954-797-1030 or email me at jpaul@davie-fl.gov.

NOVEMBER 2015 | OUR CITY DAVIE
A new chapter in cancer care is here.
Don’t Smoke? You Could Still Get Lung Cancer If you think you are safe from lung cancer because you have never smoked, think again. While cigarette smoking is the No. 1 cause of lung cancer, secondhand smoke, exposure to toxins, or a family history of lung cancer can also trigger the disease.
Bruno Bastos, MD
Cleveland Clinic Florida
Oncologist There is a false perception that lung cancer is the result of a personal choice to smoke, so lung cancer patients are not always viewed in the same light as those with other types of cancer.
“There’s a huge stigma associated with lung cancer because the majority of people who die from it are either smokers or former smokers,” says Cleveland Clinic Florida oncologist Bruno Bastos, MD. “But, tobacco is one of the most addictive substances known to man. Addiction is a disease, and nobody deserves to get lung cancer.” Patients who have stopped smoking are still at an increased risk for lung cancer long before they receive a lung cancer diagnosis. “Additionally, the fact is that anyone can be exposed to toxins and develop lung cancer, so this is a disease that should concern everyone,” Dr. Bastos said. The stigma associated with lung cancer has had a negative effect on lung cancer research. Although statistics from the Centers for Disease Control show that more people in the United States die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer, researchers have had a difficult time obtaining funding to find a cure.
The Maroone Cancer Center is the first hospital-based facility in the southeastern United States to install and operate the most advanced nonsurgical technology to break down tumors. This revolutionary, noninvasive approach using external beam radiotherapy improves accuracy, safety and recovery time. Learn how our holistic approach is helping more patients survive cancer.
Same-day
appointments 855.324.8153
“Other types of cancers also have a lot more survivors who can advocate for funding,” said Dr. Bastos. “There are not enough lung cancer survivors to demand change and those who do survive often blame themselves, and many are not willing to tell their stories.” Despite the lack of funding for research, there has been great progress made in lung cancer diagnosis and treatments over the last several years. “There are many different types of lung cancer,” Dr. Bastos said. “Genetic testing has helped researchers to develop therapies that target specific types of cancer cells.” Immune-based therapies, in which the immune system is primed to attack tumors, also are showing potential for treating lung cancer, Dr. Bastos said. These therapies already have been approved for treating skin cancer. Development of screening tools such as CT scans help with early identification of lung cancer, too, which Dr. Bastos says “could save tens of thousands of lives.”

Ask the Sheriff
By Sheriff Scott Israel
M
any Broward residents want to get involved to promote greater public safety in their communities. This month, I wanted to highlight one of the many volunteer opportunities we offer at the Broward Sheriff’s Office. The Citizen Observer Patrol (COP) program, in which more than 1,000 Broward County residents participate, targets local crime prevention within a district by providing a visible presence in local neighborhoods. COP volunteers are local residents who help BSO fight crime by patrolling their community, looking out for suspicious activity or potential hazards and offering assistance to neighbors. Their high visibility in their COP uniforms is a valuable addition to local law enforcement and a deterrent to crime. Administered by each local BSO district, the COPs are there to help people, to observe and to report incidents to law enforcement. Their vigilance enhances the patrols of deputies working in their communities. COPs serve as extra “eyes and ears” of BSO, making our streets safer. Recently, two COPs observed a possible DUI suspect and notified their local dispatch. The suspect’s vehicle was found and stopped, and the individual was arrested. It was discovered that the driver was also linked to a hit-andrun crash earlier that evening. There is no doubt these COPs helped to prevent a tragic event from occurring. COPs often function as friendly BSO ambassadors to the many tourists who visit Broward County. Members of this unit provide an invaluable service to BSO deputies, whose time and focus are most often directed elsewhere. COPs also assist our deputies by providing help with traffic and parking enforcement.
Rotary Run for Tomorrow December 13th at Cypress Bay High School Last year, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea resident Bill Johansen approached his BSO district command with an innovative idea: create a COP bike unit to increase visibility and accessibility of law enforcement in his community. Shortly after, Bill’s idea was implemented. Today, eight COP volunteers, including Bill, make up the LBTS bike unit. In their short time serving as an extra set of eyes and ears for law enforcement, they have produced successes. Members from the unit were at the Farmer’s Market in a local park when an 80-year-old man exhibited signs he was suffering a stroke. They immediately called emergency services and ensured help was on the way. The unit has also assisted searches for missing persons and even helped to remove a fish hook from an injured pelican. The COPs carry on a proud tradition of cooperation between law enforcement and the citizens we serve. If you see one of these dedicated volunteer citizens, please take a moment to thank them for their time and efforts. Together – BSO and neighbors – we make a great home team. For information, visit sheriff.org.

P
erhaps you have heard the “rent vs. buy” argument far too often. Many who have come to that buy-rent fork in the yellow-brick road develop “analysis paralysis” and continue residing in the ever-increasing pricey rental market. The experts still indicate that the road to wealth is homeownership. According to the latest Beracha, Hardin & Johnson Buy vs. Rent (BH&J) Index, homeownership is a better way to produce greater wealth, on average, than renting. The BH&J Index is a quarterly report that attempts to answer the question: Is it better to rent or buy a home in today’s housing market? The index examines the entire US housing market and then isolates 23 major markets for comparison. Using a “horse-race comparison,” the researchers compare an individual who may rent a similar quality home to another who invests those same monies in a purchase. Ken Johnson, real estate economist and professor at Florida Atlantic University, and one of the index’s authors, states: “The U.S. as a whole is still in clear buy territory. The cities of Cincinnati, Chicago, Cleveland, and New York City are deep into buy territory.” Miami (area) and Portland had been inching closer toward renting being the better option, but have “pulled back from the edge.” Johnson goes on to say, “That’s a good sign for home pricing as it suggests prices are going to level off in these metro areas.” What is going on with pricing in Davie and Cooper City? In school, we all learned the Theory of Supply and Demand. When the demand for an item is greater than the supply of that item, the price will surely rise. Single-family homes for sale (inventory) in Davie are down 3.6% compared to last year. Single-family homes sold and closed are up 45.5% compared to last year as well as homes currently placed under contract are up 45.2%. This results in a three-month supply of single-family homes available, making this a bona fide Seller’s market. Single-family homes for sale (inventory) in Cooper City are actually up 17.3% compared to last year. However, single-family homes closed are up 52.4% compared to last year as well as homes currently placed under contract are up 84.6% compared to last year. Again, this is a bona fide Seller’s market. The 17.3% increase in inventory over last year does make up for the giant leap of homes under contract and homes that have sold and closed. What about homes for rent? In Davie, there is only one-month’s supply. In Cooper City, there is only .9 month’s supply of inventory. The low inventory of single-family rentals will drive up the price. What about financing? If you are a first-time buyer or a current homeowner thinking of moving up to a bigger home or buying a vacation home, now may be the time to act. Mortgage lending standards are beginning to ease and interest rates are beginning to inch up. Buying a home makes sense socially and financially. Rents are predicted to increase substantially in the next year, so lock in your housing cost with a mortgage payment now. The bottom is that there’s no place like home-ownership. t is becoming somewhat commonplace for individuals who are going through a dissolution of marriage or other family law matter to avoid the cost of an attorney. In some instances, such strategy can be cost effective and successful. If it’s a short term marriage with little or no assets and no minor children, the process can be somewhat simple. This of course means that the parties are in full agreement and are basically just seeking to terminate their marriage. Any issue which is not resolved will complicate the process. The problem arises when individuals attempt to resolve their case without having the necessary knowledge and sign away their rights. Often they realize that they may have made a mistake and as a result seek a way to void the Agreement. It is often too late and the decisions they made are final and legally binding. A Marital Settlement Agreement is a legally binding contract entered into between two parties. Of course there may be legal grounds to set it aside under certain circumstances.
I have seen a number of individuals that come to my office with a signed Mediation Agreement. These individuals went to mediation without the benefit of an attorney. Mediation is a process in which a neutral third party attempts to resolve the parties’ differences. The important aspect of mediation to remember is that a mediator is neutral and does not represent either party and should not give legal advice. Therefore, if parties choose to attend mediation when not represented by an attorney, they are on their own. Often individuals feel pressured to resolve the case so they can move on with their lives. This can sometimes lead to individuals agreeing to something they would not have agreed to if they took the time to consider it. If that person had an attorney, he/she would have been advised as to the consequences of that provision and at least the decision would have been an educated one. I often ask an individual who comes to see me with a signed agreement and was without benefit of an attorney, “Why did you sign this?” Their reply is usually, “I just wanted to get it over with.” Sometimes trying to save money by handling your case without the benefit of an attorney will result in a higher cost over the years. It is important to remember that the only issues which can potentially be changed or modified are child support, alimony and time sharing. Issues concerning the distribution of assets are not subject to change unless an individual can show fraud or duress. If an asset is waived because you wished to get the case over and subsequently you realize it was not in your best interests, likely nothing can be done to correct your mistake. If you have any doubts or concerns about the terms of an Agreement; don’t sign it and instead talk to a family law attorney. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

A
lmost daily, we have a child come in to our office with many more cavities than anticipated. In some instances, they are “regulars” coming in for their six month checks and everyone present attests to their daily brushing ritual. Still, in a relatively short period of time, these cavities have formed between the teeth. To understand this situation better, it is helpful to look at the underlying causes of cavities. In order to form a dental cavity, there are certain ingredients which are a must. First of all, cavity causing bacteria must be present. The most notable of these bacteria are the Streptococcus Mutans. Although the thought of bacteria entering the mouth is an unsavory one, it is a fact of life. In fact, these bacteria make a home in our mouth at a very early age and are usually transmitted unintentionally by a child’s caregiver (i.e. when blowing on a hot spoon during feeding time). The bacteria colonize on our teeth and form a plaque. They use sugars we ingest to increase the size of the plaque. Biproducts from these colonies are acidic. This decrease in pH begins the process of breakdown of the tooth’s outer layer, the enamel. Once this shell is accessed, the bacteria can start to travel through the tooth. Therefore, the main players are bacteria, sugar, and acidity. We recommend brushing and flossing to reduce the quantities of bacteria and remove sugars left behind after meals. Fluoride can be used to strengthen the enamel. Xylitol products are showing some promising data in the ability to limit the effectiveness of the bacteria. Still, a person who brushes/flosses and goes to the dentist for cleanings and fluoride application can still have cavities depending on intake of certain foods and liquids. As it turns out, consumption of sugar is not the only advantage that our diet provides the bacteria. Many of the foods and beverages we are consuming are acidic and therefore lower the overall pH in the mouth speeding the process of cavity making. For example, diet soda may have no simple sugars useful to the bacteria, but the carbonation creates a very acidic oral environment. Studies have shown that many of the popular sports drinks are more acidic than batteries used for small appliances. After a little digging, we usually find out that the unexpected cavities are preceded by the intake of acidic beverages. The bad news is that our modern diet is full of sugary acidic foods. Our children’s heroes promote them in every marketing medium. Our office philosophy is not to deny our children their treats, but rather to modify eating habits and limit the periods of exposure to certain foods. For example, a child who drinks a sports drink after practice should do so at one sitting rather than doing so throughout the day. We recommend rinsing with water after consuming acidic drinks, as it is very effective at balancing pH. If hard candy is eaten, brushing should be done. Sugary snacks should be eaten with meals. Snacks eaten between meals should be of a healthier variety, like fruits veggies and granola. The idea is to be creative rather than restrictive. Happy eating! Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd.
