The Other November Day to Give Thanks

M

ost Americans gather with family and friends on the fourth Thursday of November to give thanks and enjoy a wonderful meal. This great tradition dates back to pilgrims and Native Americans eating wild turkey in New England, or so the story goes. There is another day in November, however, when we should all give thanks as well. On November 11th we celebrate Veterans Day. It is the day when we recognize the men and women who have risked life and limb to protect us, and our way of life. On Veteran’s Day, I think of true American Heroes, like Pembroke Pines native Patrick Xavier, Jr., a Marine who gallantly gave his life for his country. I also think of the countless Lance Corporals and Specialists, Sailors and Airmen, who we rarely read about. These faceless heroes silently labor away, frequently at risk, yet are seldom recognized. They don’t ask for much. Each one of them felt a calling to volunteer; some because they wanted to prove something to themselves; others, because of a deep desire to “give back” to their country. Perhaps we should go out of our way on November 11th to do something nice for them. So, if you see a service member on that special day, buy him a drink, pick up the tab for her lunch, or simply say “thank you” or “Oorah!” It doesn’t sound like much, but it might be all that they need. Happy Thanksgiving, and to all those veterans out there, Thanks! Sincerely, Terry Jaillet President & Publisher

W

hether you are looking for horse-related items, crafts or a delicious breakfast, the 19th Annual Pancake Breakfast, Tack Sale and Craft Show has it all. It will be held on November 6, from 9am to 2pm, at Robbins Lodge in Davie. “The South Florida Trail Riders host one of the largest tack sales each year in South Florida,” said Brian Skelly, president of the South Florida Trail Riders of Broward County. “Be sure not to miss this year’s tack sale, where you can get bargain basement prices on tack and horse-related crafts.” The event is one of many ways that the South Florida Trail Riders of Broward help to unite the horse community. From 9am to 11:30am, club members will be flipping pancakes, which will be available for $5 (all you can eat). Hot dogs and hamburgers will also be available after 11:30am. More than two dozen vendors will sell new and used tack and horse related goods, as well as arts and crafts, such as candles, photography, soaps, pet goods, and baked goods. Proceeds from the event will go back into the club to cover its insurance cost, materials for community projects, fun shows and

parade attire. A full space (10X10 banquet table size) costs $20 and a half space (5X5 card table size) costs $10. Exhibitors are responsible for bringing their own furnishings to display their wares.

2015 Pancake Breakfast, Tack Sale and Craft Show

Established in 1979, the South Florida Trail Riders of Broward County is an organization of people of all ages and horses of all breeds. It offers something for everyone, whether they own a horse, know someone who does, or hope to make one part of their family one day. Members are dedicated to having fun. They are also devoted to horse and rider rights of safe passage by promoting designated horse trails. The Trail Riders meet the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Davie Women’s Club to discuss events and rides, as well as information about new products, services, trails and more. There are also guest speak-

ers upon request. Members enjoy trail rides throughout Davie, as well as campouts almost every weekend from September to April. There are also rides and club events during the summer. Members participate in the Orange Blossom Parade, Holly Day Parade and Electric Light Parade. The group also has a Fun Show, Halloween Costume Ride, annual Christmas party, and more. “This is a group of people who have a passion for owning and riding horses, as well as helping others with that same passion,” said Skelly. “Groups such as ours are instrumental in the preservation of existing trails and the creation of new ones here in our South Florida community and throughout the state.” Robbins Lodge is located at Hiatus Road, east of Flamingo Road and North of Orange Drive. For vendor registration and information, call Tina West at 954-319-1203 or send an email to tina@ allcountysurverys.com. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health center and it’s at 17160 Royal palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill professional plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. call Melissa or Annie for an appointment. 9th Annual Autism Awareness Day Will Acclimate Kids and Responders SECTION HEAD community news

By Debby Teich

O

n November 20, Cooper City and the Town of Davie will be hosting the 9th Annual Autism Awareness Day event, which brings together affected families with local organizations who provide services to individuals with developmental disorders, emotional detachments, impaired communication skills or excessive rigidity. It will be held from 2pm-4pm, at the Cooper City/BSO, District 28 Fire Station, 10550 Stirling Road in Cooper City. The opening ceremony will take place at 2:30pm. The day is a service to the community at no cost to attendees. No products or services will be sold at the event. “This event provides children who have been diagnosed with autism the opportunity to establish a comfort level with firefighters and police in a controlled, non-threatening and fun atmosphere,” said Tina Hudson, assistant to the Mayor and Commission, who is coordinating the event. “If there is ever an emergency situation where the child must be faced with emergency personnel and/or their vehicles with lights and sirens, they will be less traumatized by the unfamiliar.” Participants will have the opportunity to meet firefighter/paramedics and law enforcement officers in full uniform and gear, tour their emergency vehicles and see their equipment in a controlled, non-threatening environment.

Some of the vehicles at the event might include: “Paint-A-Truck” fire truck, ladder fire truck, rescue vehicles, “HazMat” truck, police cars rescue vehicles, mobile command vehicle and SRT armored vehicle. Some of the presentations will include BSO’s “Meet Macie the Bloodhound” and Davie Fire Rescue’s “Meet Dig the Rescue Dog.” Police Explorers and CERT teams will be on hand to assist with guests. The event also includes a petting zoo, as well as lunch, compliments of the Davie Professional Firefighters and Benevolent Association Local 2315 and the Broward County Professional Firefighters and Paramedics Local 4321. Deputies from the Broward Sheriff’s Office and firefighters from Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue will be joined by officers from the Davie Police Department and Davie Fire Rescue firefighters. As first responders, the event provides a way for public safety personnel to become more familiar with the proper way to manage any incident involving people with disabilities. Jennifer Marrero attended the event last year with her 10-year-old son, Giovanni. “In the past, Giovanni was somewhat intimidated by anyone in a uniform,” said Morrero. “Now he views them as his friends. The event helped him realize that there were many children like him and it boosted his self-confidence.”

Participants meet a firefighter in full uniform and gear at last year’s event.

Cooper City Dads and Daughters to Dance the Night Away community news

By Debby Teich

O

n November 19, Cooper City dads and daughters will take a break from their busy schedules to spend some quality time together at the Annual Daddy Daughter Sock Hop, hosted by Cooper City’s Recreation Department. It will be held at Cooper City High School, from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. The popular event sells out quickly and has become a tradition that many dad and daughter duos look forward to attending. “The event gives fathers and daughters a chance to spend quality time together in an exciting, entertaining environment,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist for the Cooper City Recreation Department. “This year’s theme is sure to be a hit as they travel back in time to an era of soda pop, records, poodle skirts and Elvis. We do our best to create an environment that both the fathers and daughters will enjoy. We want to keep our residents coming year after year.” Daughters in grades kindergarten and up will enjoy a memorable “date with dad” that includes an evening of dancing, dinner and fun. If dad is unavailable, grandfathers, step-dads and uncles are invited to step in. Participants are encouraged to dress in their favorite 1950’s attire or formal wear. There will be an old fashioned soda station, arts and craft activity, a DJ play-

ing today’s top hits and few oldies, and more. There will be plenty of opportunities throughout the night to take photos with “The King (Elvis),” as well as some old fashioned vehicles. The City of Cooper City has several other events throughout the year to promote positive family relationships. In September, residents enjoyed the Mom-Son Night of Fun and Grandparents Day. On December 21, tickets go on sale for the Father Son Adventure, which will be held January 27. On April 19, tickets will go on sale for the Mother-Daughter Tea, which will be held on May 13. “Our events provide an outlet for our residents to bond with their family and spend quality time together in an entertaining atmosphere free of today’s technology distractions,” said Trainor. Tickets are limited and currently on sale at the Community Center. Tickets must be purchased in person prior to the event and proof of Cooper City residency is required. There will be no tickets sold at the door. For information on activities and events, visit www. CooperCityFL.org or call 954-434-4300, ext. 233.

Davie’s Actors Community Theatre Presents “Sex Please, We’re Sixty!” By Debby Teich

T

his month, Davie residents can experience live theater right in their own neighborhood. The Actors Community Theatre of Davie will be presenting “Sex Please, We’re Sixty!” by Michael Parker and Susan Parker. Performances will be held on November 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 8pm, as well as November 12, 13, 19 and 20 at 2pm, at the Davie Pine Island Park Multipurpose Center. “The plays are always very professionally done and you cannot beat the price,” said John Goodman, who has attended many of the productions. The story takes place at Mrs. Stancliffe’s Rose Cottage Bed & Breakfast, which has been successful for many years. Her guests, nearly all women, return year after year. Her next door neighbor, the elderly, silver-tongued, “Bud the Stud” Davis, believes they come to spend time with him in romantic liaisons. ACT of Davie’s production of “Sex Please, We’re Sixty!” is being directed by William Roach. Cast members include: Brenda Aulbach, Rene Barrett, Jeff Canary, Ned Cray, Dana Fredebaugh and Jo Ann Tiberio. ACT board members are actively involved in every production. They include: Dana Fredebaugh (President), Bonnie Ladich (VP), Sylvia Alexander (Secretary), Fern Katz (Treasurer), David Alexander, Carole Czvekus, Christopher Harrington, Barry Katz, and William Roach. There are also many dedicated volunteers, including Mary Ellen Meeks, Adele Robbins, and Marie Seibel (program/postcard designer). “ACT continues to thrive thanks to our enthusiastic audiences, the dedication and commitment of our volunteers - the Board of Directors, the actors, directors, production team, ticketing staff and concession crew - and the sponsorship of the

Town of Davie,” said Dana Fredebaugh, ACT President. Since 2000, ACT has provided residents with a way to enjoy local theater at affordable prices. It all started when an ad appeared in the Davie Update asking for thespians. Several people responded and became the nucleus for the Town’s first (and only) community theatre. The volunteer group is funded by the Town of Davie and run by its Board of Directors. ACT’s script committee, headed by Barry Katz, selects three shows to produce every year. After board approval, they announce the call for directors and actors by sending emails through the ACT database and posting notices on social media and on several websites, including the Town of Davie’s. The director, chosen by the Board, selects the cast members, who have ranged in age from 6 to 80 plus. Some are first-time actors, while others have been acting for years. The plays are performed over two or three consecutive weekends at the Davie Pine Island Park Multipurpose Center and often sell-out. Upcoming productions in 2017 include: “Cactus Flower” by Abe Burrows (February 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26) and “I Never Sang for My Father” by Robert Anderson (May 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21).

Davie Youth Lacrosse Opens Registration for 2017 Season

icknamed “the fastest sport on two feet,” lacrosse combines basketball, soccer and hockey. It continues to grow in popularity in South Florida, especially since it became sanctioned at the high school level. Davie Youth Lacrosse is now registering players for the 2017 season, which runs from January 23 to April 29. “The kids love lacrosse, because it is actionpacked with plenty of scoring,” said Pete Dunne, who co-founded the Davie program with Shaun Bamforth in 2008. “Athletes of all ages, skills and sizes can play

the sport. It is very easy for new players to pick up the game, especially if they start at a young age.” The program is organized and run by the Davie Youth Lacrosse Foundation, Inc., a 501c3 charitable organization. Davie Youth Lacrosse is a “travel” recreation program, with a focus on giving players of all skill levels a quality learning experience and an opportunity to have fun playing lacrosse. Players are taught improved agility, conditioning, team work, and the skills necessary to play lacrosse. They are also taught to respect the game, as well as the other players. Davie Youth Lacrosse has approximately 340 boys and girls, in grades kindergarten to 9th, who play on 17 teams. They practice twice per week, with games on Saturdays against other recreational lacrosse teams throughout South Florida. Practices and home games are held at Bamford Park in Davie. Experience is not a requirement to join - just a willingness to learn and have fun. To encourage new players to try the game, the program has loaner gear available for younger players. Prior to the 2017 season, Davie Youth Lacrosse will be offering two programs in December/January. There is an advanced training program for new and experienced players, with more information available at www.faststartlacrosse.com. There is also a Davie Winter Box Lacrosse League. The weekly coached game league, for kids ages kindergarten through high school, includes six weeks of “indoor” lacrosse

on turfed hockey rinks, with games two evenings a week. Players can create and register as a team. For information, visit www.browardlaxdvantage.com. Dunne says they are always looking for coaches, with or without experience. They will teach the volunteers everything they need to know about the game. The program has limited spots available and is expected to fill up. Financial aid is available to qualified Davie residents. For information, visit www.davielacrosse.com.

Martial Krama Yoga Unifies Two Systems into the Ultimate Practice SECTION HEAD feature story

By Debby Teich

O

ne of the many ways that Krama Yoga Institute leaves clients with a healthy body and a quiet mind is through Martial Krama Yoga, a fusion of multiple Martial Arts and the Vinyasa Krama style of Yoga. This system offers a variety of class types and sets. Some are focused solely on cultivating internal energy, while others are focused on transforming the average person into the ultimate athlete - all in the process of striving for “Moksha” or the liberation of self.

Alexander Issaev, who created Krama Martial Yoga, answered some commonly asked questions about the practice.

Describe Martial Krama Yoga. It is a yogic system that holds martial arts practices. Due to its vast influences, it offers different physical routines, such as Vinyasa Yoga with martial elements, strengthening classes using your own body weight, martial arts conditioning classes, qi gong, tai chi and more. Which types of martial arts are within the system? There are many, including western boxing, muy thai, kung fu, silat, qi gong, tai chi and more. It is a practice that is still growing, so it is not fixed and concrete. Since I believe everything needs to keep evolving, changes and additions will be made as it develops through time. Does it have a belt system? Yes. There is a belt system within the practice. Clients receive belts depending on their individual discipline and willingness to learn. Do clients learn how to defend themselves in this practice? Yes. Once again, however, it is also up to each student’s personal will to pursue this section of the practice.

Alexander Issaev, Krama Martial Yoga creator

November 2016 | OUR CITY DAVIE

Why do you use a cross mat? Most yoga physical practices in the West or America are either one direction or double orientation. Martial Krama Yoga offers a cross mat due to its multidimensional practice to test and/or increase neurological activity (brain power). Who created the system? I (Alexander Issaev) created this specific art. Many other masters and/or senseis, gurus and sifus have mixed both of these practices

throughout ancient history. One example is the Shaolin monks of China. They have mastered and mixed both yogic systems and martial arts.

Unifying Two Systems Into The Ultimate Practice

How did you come up with the idea of this mix? As child, I loved martial arts and began doing them at an early age. As I grew up, I began to see the yoga behind all of it. After many years of switching from one discipline to the other, I noticed that every martial arts system holds or has major yogic influences. After a small accident, my acupuncturist, Nelly Yefet, recommended that I start doing just yoga until I recovered fully. As soon as I began practicing yoga, I fell in love with it. I immediately knew that I wanted to create or mix a system that allowed me to practice both. After six years of yoga, I was ready to put the pieces together. Where is Krama Martial Arts available? Krama Yoga Institute is the only place where you will be able to find this practice. They have built a state of the art facility which caters solely to this practice. They will provide you with all the tools needed to participate in this practice. Krama Yoga Institute is located at 12900 West State Road 84, parallel to 595. RECIPE

Some people are intimidated by the thought of cooking Thanksgiving dinner. The idea of serving relatives and friends dry turkey can be stressful. Have no fear, though, cooking a Thanksgiving turkey is actually quite easy. We have been using this recipe at home for years with great success. Enjoy!

Ingredients: 1 large whole turkey (fresh or defrosted) ½ cup unsalted melted butter or olive oil Kosher Salt Fresh ground pepper One celery stalk (cut into thirds) One onion, chopped into 1-2 inch pieces Two apples, chopped into 1-2 inch pieces Herbs (sage, rosemary and/or thyme) Instructions:

189 Weston Road, Weston 954-617-7999 $$ Zona Blu specializes in Sardinian-style Italian cuisine. The casual , family-friendly restaurant and deli/market serves fresh seafood, homemade pasta, wood-fired pizza and offers a fine selection of imported wines. Its signature dishes include Linguine Nere all-Arresina and Fregola Sarda ai Frutti di Mare. It offers a monthly Agriturismo Night, as well as a Chef’s Choice menu featuring Zona Blu’s most popular Sardinian dishes prepared by Chef Andrea Fadda.

Preheat oven to 325° F. Remove neck and giblets from turkey, then wash thoroughly, inside and out. Pat dry with paper towels. Place the turkey, breast side up, on a cooking rack, in a shallow roasting pan. Coat the exterior of the turkey with the olive oil or butter, then season with kosher salt and pepper. Loosely stuff the turkey with the celery, onion, apples and herbs.

Sushi Tom

If things don’t go as planned, you can always call the Butterball turkey experts for advice at 1-800-BUTTERBALL (288-8372).

1396 SW 160th Avenue, Weston 954-385-3688 $$ Sushi Tom has been serving the highest quality sushi in Weston since 2009. It specializes in authentic Japanese cuisine featuring teriyaki, tempura and an extensive menu of fresh sushi and sashimi, at reasonable prices. There is even an all-you-can-eat sushi menu. Sushi Tom offers dine-in, take-out and delivery.

Sushiato

4483 Weston Road, Weston 754-223-7923 $$ The concept behind Sushiato, the art of sushi; is different from what we know as Sushi restaurants, because Sushiato presents Sushi with a “Latin Fusion” exotic and tropical flavors mixed with original Japanese cuisine and recipes. Their owners came from Venezuela with this idea and Weston received them open arms sharing the dream of this new concept. Weston is a clear example of what a great fusion gives a city: diverse nationalities, cultures, styles, accents and flavors that melt to create a new identity.

Place prepared turkey in center of oven. After 2 ½ hours, loosely cover the turkey with aluminum foil, to prevent the skin from burning. Continue to cook until the breast of the turkey reaches an internal temperature of 180° F. Remove from oven, and let stand for 10 to 15 minutes before carving.

ed up with a healthcare system that addresses only symptoms and relies heavily on prescription medication, doctors and patients are turning to a new, personalized model known as Functional Medicine. Some people call it the “medicine of the future,” because it addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century by shifting the traditional diseasecentered focus of medical practice to a more patientcentered approach. But what does this mean to the average patient? At a Functional Medicine practice, a doctor will not simply prescribe medication to deal with the immediate symptoms, but look into the root of the problem. Patients can expect to spend more time talking to their doctors about their medical and family histories and are empowered to take an active role in their health. With the rise of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease, Functional Medicine moves away from the traditional acute-care approach by incorporating the latest in genetic science, specialized testing not available at your traditional doctor’s office, and most importantly, understanding how environmental and lifestyle factors influence the emergence and progression of disease. The idea is to move away from putting a temporary patch on the problem, but instead focus on treating the entire human organism to spread health and vitality through strategies that include diet and exercise. The treatments are all natural, using vitamins, minerals and specialized supplements that won’t cause the side effects seen in synthetic prescription medications. In a nutshell, the goal is for patients to look and feel ten years younger, while practicing prevention to avoid future disease. As the practice of Functional Medicine continues to grow, so do the anti-aging treatments, including the controversial hormone replacement therapy. This service has become popular and is provided in many offices, but it is critical that patients do their research and ensure they are working with a certified professional. The study of hormones is complicated and requires extensive training, because altering hormones will trigger reactions in the body and also change other hormones—nothing to be scared of as long as you are working with a board certified doctor. In order to be healthy, one needs to be hormonally balanced. Hormone production diminishes as people start aging. At Bellissimo, we specialize in bio-identical hormone replacement for women who are experiencing side effects of menopause as well as men undergoing the andropause phase. The treatment is also available to younger adults who might have an imbalance due to secondary reasons. Patients can expect to see an improvement in energy levels and sex drive among other benefits. Treatment is provided through pellets, creams, or natural oral supplements depending on the patient’s needs. Hormone replacement is only a percentage of the work done at a functional medicine practice. A large number of patients who have moved toward this new medicinal approach range from those that are healthy and want to prevent disease to those already suffering from chronic diseases to include fibromyalgia, connective tissue disorders, thyroid problems, chronic fatigue, immune problems, weight issues, and abdominal/stomach issues. Call today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Teens to Design Gowns for the 11th Annual YAA Recycled Fashion Show SECTION HEAD community news

t the Young At Art Museum’s 11th Annual Teen Recycled Fashion Show, teens will promote sustaining the environment with original, runway fashion designs. “Tech Restyled!” is the theme for the event, which will be held on November 18, at 7pm, at the museum. Proceeds will be used to support YAA’s Teen Volunteer Program and its Girls ‘N Power initiative. “As we celebrate 11 years of creative teen designers, this event has grown from a few teen participants to a full-blown, professionally staged fashion show,” said YAA Executive Director/CEO Mindy Shrago. “It now is one of the most popular community events in the area. The teen designers begin preparing during the summer and put in more than a hundred hours of work to

take their designs from concept to runway.” This year’s teen designers will draw inspiration from the Museum’s featured exhibition, Hi-Tech/Lo-Tech, An Exploration of the Ever-changing Relationship between Art and Technology. The Teen Recycled Fashion Show challenges each participant to design an original garment, from concept to design, into original wearable art made from recycled and repurposed materials including metallic mesh, newspaper, cardboard, egg cartons, canvas, remnant fabric, bottle caps, recycled plastics, splatter paint and more. Designers for Tech Restyled! include girls from YAA’s Teen Volunteer Program and its Girls ‘N Power initiative, a self-esteem building program that provides girls and young women with an opportunity for a better future through education, counseling, training and advocacy. PACE has been a partner with Young At Art for several initiatives, including the Teen Recycled Fashion Show and Girls ‘N Power. The high-energy event will feature music, hors d’oeuvres and libations, a recycled jewelry-making station, and more. Teen models will have their hair, nails and make-up styled by Kaizen Beauty Academy before they take to the runway to dazzle a panel of judges whose difficult task it will be to determine first, second and third place awards. “As a teaching institution, we are proud that Young At Art Museum hosts an event that not only educates about art, sustaining the environment, public speaking and more, but also brings together teens from diverse backgrounds who learn cooperative life lessons through creativity,” said Shrago. “That is as important as the enchanting evening where they enjoy the spotlight.” Young At Art is located at 751 SW 121 Avenue in Davie. Tickets range from $35 to $40. For information, call 954-424-5064 or visit YoungAtArtMuseum.org.

Don’t Smoke? You Could Still Get Lung Cancer

Bruno Bastos, MD

Cleveland Clinic Florida Oncologist

If you think you are safe from lung cancer because you have never smoked, think again. While cigarette smoking is the No. 1 cause, there are other factors that can result in the development of lung cancer. Lung Cancer Stigma

A false perception is prevalent in society today, that lung cancer is the result of a personal choice to smoke. As a result, lung cancer patients are not always viewed in the same light as patients with other types of cancer. “There’s a huge stigma associated with lung cancer because the majority of people who die from it are either smokers or former smokers,” says Cleveland Clinic Florida oncologist Bruno Bastos, MD. “But, tobacco is one of the most addictive substances known to man. Addiction is a disease, and nobody deserves to get lung cancer.” Although smoking is certainly a contributing factor, the reality is that anyone can be exposed to second-hand smoke or other toxins, as well as have a family history of lung cancer, which can also trigger the disease. “You do not have to be a smoker in order to develop lung cancer, and it should be a major concern for everyone,” Dr. Bastos said. The stigma associated with lung cancer has also had a negative effect on research. Although statistics from the Centers for Disease Control

show that more people in the United States die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer, researchers have had a difficult time obtaining funding to find a cure. “Other types of cancers also have a lot more survivors who can advocate for funding,” said Dr. Bastos. “There are not enough lung cancer survivors to demand change, and those who do survive often blame themselves, and many are not willing to share their stories.” Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment Despite the lack of funding for research, there has still been great progress made in lung cancer diagnosis and treatments over the last several years. “There are many different types of lung cancer,” according to Dr. Bastos, “and genetic testing has helped researchers develop therapies that target specific types of lung cancer cells.” Additionally, therapies already approved to treat skin cancer, are being considered for lung cancer as well. “Immune-based therapies, in which the immune system is primed to attack tumors, are also showing potential for treating lung cancer,” said Dr. Bastos. There have been some other innovations over the past few years as well. Development of screening tools such as CT scans aid in early detection of lung cancer, which Dr. Bastos says “could save tens of thousands of lives.”

who smokes, the sooner you quit, the better. Although smokers who have quit are still at an increased risk for lung cancer, the good news is that their risk decreases as the number of years they have been smoke-free increases. The best advice is not to start smoking to begin with. Lung Cancer: Novel Targeted Immunotherapy Cancer cells are not like normal cells, in that they rapidly divide and frequently mutate or change in order to evade the immune system. Immunotherapy is a type of treatment that stimulates the body’s immune system to target and destroy cancer cells. A new investigational research trial, called CheckMate, is now being offered in select sites across the country to patients with advanced lung cancer. “This trial involves a new immunotherapy approach that specifically activates the immune system to fight lung cancer tumor cells, without harming healthy tissue,” according to Cleveland Clinic Florida oncologist, Bruno Bastos, MD. Cleveland Clinic Florida has been designated the first academic medical center in the region to participate in this cutting-edge immunotherapy trial. Dr. Bastos states, “We are pleased to now offer this treatment to patients with advanced lung cancer.”

Western High School Participates in Harvest Drive

SECTION news school HEAD

By Debby Teich

Volunteers help out at Western High School’s 2015 Harvest Drive.

T

wenty-four years ago, Renee Herman initiated a canned food drive to help 25 families in need. As the effort expanded and she needed more space, she moved her collection site to Western High School in Davie. The Harvest Drive offers food, clothing, toys and other necessities to local families who are identified as being in need of assistance during the Thanksgiving holiday and year round. It also educates students regarding the issue of hunger, which impacts many of Broward County’s most vulnerable residents. It is a classic example of “children helping children.” This year, Herman hopes to provide 2,200 families in Broward County with a complete Thanksgiving dinner, plus a week’s worth of groceries. Students at more than 190 schools, as well as churches, temples, neighborhoods, girl/boy scout troops and others will conduct drives in order to supply the Harvest Drive with non-perishable food that will be distributed to the families.

“We are teaching the children that together we can create a culture of giving,” said Herman. “We’ve made a commitment to 2,200 families and we need enormous donations from our students and community, as well as monetary donations to achieve our goal.” There are 15 high schools that serve as distribution centers, plus 200 participating schools. Western High School continues to be the largest effort and the flagship of the Harvest Drive operation. Last year, the school helped 375 families and it is expecting a greater number this year. The families, who are referred by social service agencies and Broward County school social workers, receive an average of 10 overflowing bags of groceries containing turkey, stuffing, vegetables, pies and more. They can also “shop” for clothing, shoes, books, and toys. At Western, the entire school gets involved in the Harvest Drive, including staff, administration and many clubs. To kick off the effort, students bring non-perishable

items to the Homecoming Pep Rally. The school’s gym will be open for the community to make donations on November 18, from 3pm-10pm. On November 21, from 8am-10pm, the students and community volunteers will begin the arduous process of sorting and packing the food. On November 22, from 8am-4pm, the families will pick up their goods. Herman says that they still need corporate sponsors, as well as monetary or gift card donations from individuals to help pay for the turkeys, butter, pies, milk and other perishable goods. In an effort to fight hunger year round, the Harvest Drive has two on-going food pantry closets that are available for families who are recommended by a social worker. One of these is located at Western High School. For information, to volunteer or to donate, visit www.harvestdriveflorida. com or call 954-444-5548.

NSU University School’s Robotics Team is Ranked #1 in the State By Debby Teich

N

SU University School’s Upper School robotics team recently competed at the Vex Robotics 1st State Qualifying Tournament and was undefeated in all rounds. Determined to continue their winning streak, students have been busy making changes to their robot to make it even better for the competition this month at Miami Springs High School. There are a total of 20 students on the team, with five on the A team and 15 on the B team. The students are very dedicated and put in long hours that include meetings after school, on weekends, and during the summer to complete research and build prototypes. “Robotics is essentially a problem solving activity,” said team head coach Erik Weidenboerner, who created the team, as well as the honors and advanced robotics curriculum. “There are no do overs. You either win or you lose based on your dedication and skill set.” So far, the school has been winning. In the four years that the school has been competing, it has won 30 trophies, including three state champion trophies and one world championship trophy. The team is currently ranked number one in the state of Florida. “Our students are dedicated, committed, encourage one another, and truly love Robotics,” said Weidenboerner. “Each of them brings a unique set of skills to the table and has the initiative and drive to tackle new ideas independently and as a team. We (the team and I) love everything about Robotics and I feel like that is one of the main reasons we do so well.” David Skaff, team president, has been on the team David Farache works on a robot

for the past three years. “The key to our success has been the constant improvement, learning, and dedication that has driven us to embody the engineers we hope to become,” said Skaff. “We work together as a single NSU University School team in our competitions and help each other meet the legacy that we’ve worked so hard to establish. We each contribute to the process in some way, whether it is building, programming, note booking, or managing.” Skaff says that he loves the freedom and flexibility of the competitions. “There are no instruction manuals or criteria that dictate our actions,” said Skaff. “There is only the game that VEX presents to us. The rest is up to the team. We outline our own processes and come up with our own designs to whatever extent we feel appropriate. I’ve been lucky to have dedicated team members that have qualified for the World Competition two years in a row. I can’t wait to see what more we can achieve.”

ne of the most common anxieties parents share with us concerns the timing of the eruption of teeth. We are often asked: “When are the first teeth scheduled to enter the mouth?” or “Which is better - late or early erupting teeth?” The truth of the matter is that although there are published milestones, there is still a normal variation/range that teeth may be expected to erupt. In terms of which is better, there is no real benefit for early or late eruption. However, extreme deviations may cause a practical challenge, as we will discuss. Let’s start with the primary (or “baby”) teeth. The first primary tooth to erupt is usually the lower central incisor between 5-8 months of age. The teeth will then follow the “rule of twos,” which is that two additional teeth will erupt every two months until around 2-2½ years old. There are a total of 20 primary teeth equally divided between upper and lower arches. After the eruption of the lower central incisors, we will see the eruption of the upper central incisors and the lower lateral incisors (as the name suggests, next to the central incisors), followed by the upper lateral incisors. The pattern will continue from center laterally with the lower erupting earlier than the upper counterparts. Premature eruption of primary teeth occurs in 1:2000. This can occur in two ways. “Natal” teeth are present at birth and “prenatal” teeth erupt in the first 30 days of life. When teeth erupt prematurely, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider (pediatrician or pediatric dentist), as strategies for feeding will need to be addressed, especially if breastfeeding is planned. There are also structures which are present at birth which resemble premature teeth, but are actually not the primary teeth. One of the most common examples of this is “Epstein pearls.” They are visible cysts located in the upper arch in the front close to where the primary teeth are expected to be positioned. There is no treatment recommended for this, as long as there is no interference with feeding and no observed discomfort for the child. As with all published milestones, it is important to acknowledge the fact that these are just averages and that “normal” has a range. We find variation in gender, with females being ahead of males. It is also important to note that deviations in one area may have no bearing on others. For example, there are many children who are either “ahead” or “behind” in dental development, but are at the opposite ends of the spectrum in skeletal growth. They do, however, give us an idea of what to plan for and some guidance on timing of interventional treatment, whether dental or orthodontic, when indicated. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. T

his is a continuation from last month’s article. It is important to qualify the buyers, which prevents unqualified buyers from wasting everyone’s time, including the Seller. The Realtor should verify: ▸▸ Homeowners Association information and copies of restrictions and bylaws, fees and payment procedures. ▸▸ Utility company information and average monthly bills for the past 12 months. ▸▸ Properties amenities and upgrades. Permits are researched through the municipality’s website. The importance of offering a one-year home warranty for Buyers may make the home more attractive. Some companies offer Seller’s coverage during the listing period. The Seller Disclosure should be filled out and uploaded as an MLS attachment, along with the survey, floor plan or blueprints and any instructions to the Buyer’s agent. Other duties include: ▸▸ Recommending staging to help showcase the home. ▸▸ Hiring a professional photographer and videographer. ▸▸ Verifying data entered into the MLS. ▸▸ Showing instructions for buyers’ agents. ▸▸ Placement of the appropriate yard sign. ▸▸ Designing custom brochures for e-mail and print distribution. ▸▸ Designing custom “Just Listed” cards for the subject neighborhood. ▸▸ Accommodating and coordinating showings with any buyers and/or buyers’ agents. Depending on the property and its location, your agent will schedule open houses and brokers’ opens for additional local exposures. Your Realtor will: ▸▸ Present all offers. ▸▸ Explain all terms. ▸▸ Negotiate all offers on behalf of the seller. ▸▸ Get all changes initialed for the fully executed “signed, sealed and delivered” contract. ▸▸ Submit any counteroffers to Buyer’s agent with a set deadline for his response. Regarding the financing, your Realtor will: ▸▸ Obtain a copy of the buyer’s pre-approval letter. ▸▸ Verify the approval with the lender through the buyer’s agent. ▸▸ Request and receive a copy of the earnest-money check. ▸▸ Verify that those funds have cleared escrow. The listing will be marked “pending” and let the inspections begin. Your Realtor will accommodate the buyers’ agent regarding the entry into the home for inspections and appraisal. Repair request will be addressed and negotiated on behalf of the seller. Of course, if the offer was presented and negotiated on the FR-BAR AS-IS, then there may not be any repair issues to discuss. However, the Seller may wish to fix items or issue a credit at closing rather than have the Buyer cancel the contract before the end of the inspection period because of repairs. Other duties include: ▸▸ Making sure the Appraisal has been ordered. ▸▸ Providing past sales, floor plans, surveys, and documents that assist the appraiser. ▸▸ Delivering information to Seller if the appraisal comes in lower than the sales price. ▸▸ Renegotiating the sales price if the parties want to proceed with the contract. The Closing Agent will coordinate the closing time pursuant to the date agreed upon in the Purchase Agreement. Your agent will follow up to verify that all documents have been received, schedule a final walk-through, and attend the Closing. As you can see, there is more to getting your home sold than meets the eye. That’s why a proven checklist and an experienced agent are critical when selling and closing your home. Legally Speaking

Holiday Concerns by evan baron

M

ost people think of the holiday season with gleeful anticipation of time with family. For couples who have been through a divorce, the holiday season can often be a very stressful time. This stress can also be felt by the children of a divorced couple. It is not uncommon for holiday visitation issues to surface during this time of year. Hopefully the parties’ settlement agreement or Parenting Plan is specific as to time sharing. Over the course of approximately 35 years of practice, my clients have experienced many issues concerning holiday visitation. The biggest obstacle to solving an issue in court during this time of year is the reality that court time is very difficult to schedule. Last minute issues will not usually be addressed. Of course, wwwwwwwww the parties are always able to try and work things out on their own or with the help of attorneys and mediators. I would certainly suggest not waiting until the “last minute” to address any concerns. The best way to ensure there will be no conflicts during the holidays is to anticipate potential problems ahead of time and address them in the marital settlement agreement and/or Parenting Plan. The more specific your agreement is, the more likely you will not experience conflicts along the way. For couples with minor children, Parenting Plans have been mandatory. These Parenting Plans are designed to be very specific as to time sharing in an effort to head off any trouble in years to come. Unfortunately, these Parenting Plans were not used prior to the latter part of 2008. Therefore, many existing agreements do not include this provision. I believe the most important thing to remember is that any time sharing arrangement should always keep the best interest of the children as a priority. Children want to spend time with both parents and this is especially true during the holidays. They also want to be a part of any family gatherings. Sometimes that is not always possible, but advanced planning may be able to achieve this goal. Often parents divide the entire winter break in half, with Christmas Day being the “exchange day.” As an example, in odd numbered years, such as 2015, perhaps Dad has the children from the day school ends until noon Christmas Day. Mom will pick up the kids and keep them until school begins again. Next year, they can reverse the schedule. In some cultures, Christmas Eve is more of a celebration. Perhaps one parent can celebrate every Christmas Eve and the other Christmas Day. Also remember that “gift giving” is not a competition, with the winner being the parent who spends the most money. Often times the finances of each parent may not be the same and one must buy gifts within his/her budget. For a parent to embarrass the other by purchasing a more expensive and lavish gift is only going to lead to hard feelings and potential problems. Hopefully, the parents can discuss this issue beforehand and plan together. Often parents wish to visit family out of town. Consider the feelings of your former spouse and the children in the planning such a trip. Children have the need to be with extended family during the holidays. Perhaps holiday trips out of town can be rotated from year to year between parents. Mom and Dad can certainly make the holiday season a joyous time for their children or they can focus on themselves and make it a time that everyone would like to forget. If you need any further questions answered, please feel free to contact my office. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

Touching Lives, Making a Difference By Sheriff Scott Israel

ask the sheriff

S

hortly after I was elected Sheriff, I was invited to a local Boys and Girls Club to learn about the club and the children it serves. During that visit, I began playing basketball and closely interacting with one particular boy. As that Friday afternoon began to wind down, I noticed the counselors collecting backpacks and then handing them back out to some kids in the gym. One of those was the youngster with whom I was playing basketball. I soon learned his backpack was loaded with food so he would not go the full weekend without a decent meal. The food was the club’s way to help these kids make it through the hardest of times. I was both moved and motivated by this gesture – and it reignited my mission to bring meaningful community policing to the Broward Sheriff’s Office to help those in need. Community policing is a cornerstone of my law enforcement belief system. I learned from my late father and mentor, Sonny Israel – a life-long law enforcement officer, that the best way to protect the public is to build mutual trust and respect by treating people as friends and neighbors. Fighting crime isn’t only about catching bad guys. It starts by working hand in hand with the community as partners to prevent good kids from turning to a life of crime. Each day, our hardworking deputies interact with our diverse community and listen to their concerns firsthand. In addition, BSO plays an active role in scores of community events for important organizations that help Broward’s varied communities. These interactions are exciting opportunities for law enforcement and residents to listen, understand and build connections to help find customized local solutions to local problems. We work diligently to build community bridges that hadn’t existed in the past. Our Community Outreach Team – a program recommended by the United States Department of Justice policing studies – helps us build dynamic relationships with all those we serve. Our programs help connect the homeless and mentally ill to the social services they need. Our “Uniting Broward” initiative is already creating a transformational shift in community policing. And BSO also participates in countless neighborhood events, ranging from food giveaways to youth sports programs. The results are an amazing success. Today, community members are more at ease and bring matters to our attention – instead of waiting for them to escalate. And community policing, combined with intelligence-led policing, has caused Broward’s crime rates to plummet to the lowest rates in decades. Furthermore, a recent countywide poll indicated Broward residents personally have good experiences with law enforcement. The most important number: 85% of Broward residents said they have never had an “unpleasant experience” with law enforcement. To advance our community policing objectives further, BSO recently launched a new internal system to capture and analyze community policing efforts. With this new tool, we can now quantify the frequency of our community policing efforts and measure the positive impacts in the daily encounters that don’t involve any arrests or tickets. While I am proud of our community policing achievements, we are still constantly working on ways to get even better, and I am confident we will see more success for many years to come.

Jump Start Your New Career!

Exercising Your Dog By Miguel E. Cordova, DVM

E

Needs and Precautions

Individual exercise needs vary based on breed or breed mix, sex, age, and level of health. If your dog is a six- to 18-month adolescent or a sporting, herding, hound, or terrier breed or mixed breed, your dog’s exercise requirements are high. However, strenuous exercise can cause problems in some dogs, especially those that are not fit or are very young or old. Athletic owners should consider this to avoid overexerting their dogs, especially in hot or humid weather. When starting a new exercise routine, go slowly for the first week to give your dog a chance to adapt to it. On hot or cold days, go easy or rest. Consult your veterinarian before beginning an exercise program for your dog.

Get Moving

Various kinds of exercise can help satisfy your dog’s instinctive urges to dig, herd, chew, retrieve, and chase. Here are some good exercise options for most dogs: ▸▸ Walking or jogging ▸▸ Fetch ▸▸ Playing with other pets ▸▸ Running off leash ▸▸ Swimming (great for arthritic dogs) ▸▸ Tricks for low-calorie treats ▸▸ Tug of war if appropriate for your breed You can help your dog get plenty of exercise by scheduling regular playtimes and walks. For walks, work up to a brisk, ten- to 20-minute walk or jog once or twice a day. If you don’t have time to walk your dog, hire a dog walker. Consider adopting another pet so that your dog has a playmate that encourages activity. If you don’t want to commit to a new pet, try scheduling regular visits with the pet of a friend or relative. Doggy day care centers can also help ensure that your dog gets plenty of exercise throughout the day.

Pet Care

xercise can have many health benefits for your dog. Regular exercise burns calories, reduces appetite, improves muscle tone, increases metabolism, and improves temperature regulation. It can be a valuable contributor to weight loss and maintenance. Exercise can also help stimulate your dog’s mind, thereby preventing boredom and destructive behaviors.

Imagine A World

I

magine a world where: ▸▸ Retirement is not a time to step back, but rather a time of purpose. ▸▸ Older adults step up to become drivers of change for the greater good. ▸▸ The “senior years” are known as the “encore years” – a time for individual renewal and community involvement that has a positive social impact. ▸▸ Older people are encouraged and continue to innovate as not-for-profit and for-profit entrepreneurs. Boomer BreakThrough is taking a leadership role in Broward County to realize that new paradigm. It serves as a conduit for encore-seekers – aged 50 and above – to explore their passion, purpose and productivity and connect with opportunities to fulfill those dreams. It engages local governments, nonprofits and corporations to recognize and enroll older adults as a resource to achieve results and add to the current economy. It challenges the entrepreneurial spirit of Boomers to step into becoming a business owner. Baby Boomers – born from 1946 through 1964 – are the second largest U.S. generation living today. They number 74.9 million. There are over 400,000 Boomers in Broward County and 21,000+ in the Town of Davie. Many in this generation want “work that matters,” paid and unpaid; many want to help improve the quality of life in their communities. They are looking at the second half of their lives as an inflection point to launch a new career, start their own businesses, or give back to the community. Seventy percent of adults over age 50 have decided to work beyond age 65 in some capacity. Kitty Preziosi of Davie founded Boomer BreakThrough and is supported by many people, including a five-person advisory board (“Dream Team”) of prominent community leaders. It is dedicated to building attention, energy and involvement that inspires, educates and connects Boomers to Encore dreams and experiences of purpose and meaning in Broward County. It is inspired by the national Encore movement and is a member of Encore.org National Network. Working with local governments, nonprofits and corporations, Boomer Breakthrough can create new pathways, programs and opportunities for this generation. Baby Boomers in the Town of Davie and surrounding communities are invited to participate in the Baby Boomers: What’s Next for You? Conference at NSU, on November 4, from 8:30am to 1:30pm. Sponsored by Nova Southeastern University and Town of Davie, the conference focuses on creating an Encore life of meaning and value. Interact with experts to explore your purpose and passion. The keynote speaker is Chris Farrell, author of UNRETIREMENT: How Baby Boomers Are Changing the Way We Think About Work, Community and the Good Life. The event includes lunch, four concurrent speakers, an exhibition of opportunities (nonprofits and Davie government), and resources (organizations offering services for creating a fulfilling Encore life). To register, send an email to Kitty Preziosi at kitty@boomerbreakthrough.com. As always, if you need any assistance or wish to contact me at Town Hall, call 954-797-1030 or email me at jpaul@davie-fl.gov.

“Jake”

pet of the month

Jake is a 2-year-old rescued Doberman mix. His favorite person is his neighbor Lynda, who watches him a few times a week and gives him lots of treats. His favorite toy is PawsLite, which looks like a Coors light bottle. He likes tanning, long walks, the couch, and climbing on things. He dislikes the vacuum cleaner and taking a bath. He was last seen playing with friends in the backyard.
