Happy Holidays from Our Family to Yours
T
he South Florida community is a melting pot of diverse cultures, religions and backgrounds. This makes it the ideal place to learn about the many different holiday traditions our neighbors celebrate. At Our City Media, we feel blessed to work and live with such great and interesting people. The way our unique backgrounds have woven into a common community makes all our lives better. Just think of what we have available. On the same day, you can eat breakfast at a Bohemian bistro in Hollywood Beach, celebrate “Noche Buena” with Cuban co-workers and end the day by lighting candles on the menorah with friends. I can’t think of many other places where you could do that! I encourage you to get out and try something new, learn about someone else’s culture and don’t be afraid to share your own. So, Feliz Navidad! Happy Hanukkah! As-Salaam-Alaikum! Habari Gani! And, Merry Christmas! Best wishes and happy holidays from everyone at Our City Media.

n December 10, young riders from throughout Southwest Broward will meet for the 6th Annual Southwest Ranches Holiday Fun Horse Show at Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park in Southwest Ranches. It is an opportunity for riders, up to age 18, of all abilities to have fun at a free, nonqualifying show. “This is a great opportunity for young riders of all levels to gain show experience in an environment that nurtures and empowers,” said December Lauretano-

Haines, Parks, Recreation and Open Space Coordinator for the Town of Southwest Ranches. “Families and friends also always enjoy this event as spectators. Our Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park location is very beautiful and serene--perfect for a day of fun with horses and kids.” Check in/registration is at 8am and classes begin at 9am. The event includes a variety of classes, such as speed challenges (barrel racing, pole bending), Western (showmanship, pleasure, equitation), English (showmanship, pleasure, equitation), Hunter (showmanship, Under Saddle, equitation) and more. All of the classes are limited to 15 entries. Trophies and ribbons will be awarded to 1st place winners. Those in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th places will receive ribbons. “The greatest reward is seeing the growing confidence this experience gives to children,” said Lauretano-Haines. “Seeing the beaming smile on the face of a rider who has never competed before or won anything is such a beautiful way to experience the rural lifestyle Southwest Ranches has to offer! The feeling of great triumph for some very young riders is infectious! Everybody is a winner at the Southwest Ranches Holiday Fun Horse Show.” The public is invited to attend, whether or not they have a rider in the show. “We hope to see our neighbors and friends come out to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine, maybe have a bite to eat from our food vendors, and to cheer on some talented and determined kids putting their best foot forward,” said Lauretano-
Haines. “We are grateful for the support of our Town Council, who has never wavered in their commitment to provide this event for everyone at no cost. Our little show has grown each year, and we are prepared for a great turnout again this year.” Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park is located at 5840 SW 148 Avenue (Volunteer Road) in Southwest Ranches. Registration is required. For information, call 954-343-7452 or send an email to dlauretano@southwestranches.org.
Old Davie School Now Offers Virtual Tours BY DEBBY TEICH
I
t is hard for most children to imagine living without a refrigerator, electricity or computers. The Old Davie School Historical Museum offers tours for school groups and families to learn how pioneer children lived and learned 100 years ago. WPBT2’s Ms. Penny and her KidVision kids recently spent the day filming the school, so kids who are not able to physically visit can still take a tour. KidVision PreK provides virtual field trips for classrooms and living rooms throughout the state of Florida that engage and educate Pre-K students with no cost or worry. Each field trip is accompanied with lesson plans, student assessments, take home pages and new words. Old Davie School is excited to be part of such a great program,” said Kim Weismantle, Educational Director. “By relating their own experiences to that of children their own age 100 years ago, they see the changes and can make connections with the past.” Filming started at the Pioneer House, where Ms. Penny and the students learned how pioneer children lived in one room houses with no electricity. They made butter, since there were few places to buy it back then, and took turns at the water pump to collect water for cooking, cleaning and bath time. In the 1918 classroom, they were reminded that the pioneer students did not have electricity and relied on the large windows for sunlight. They were taught to write using

ink dip pens, which were very different from the pens and pencils they use today. Next, they headed up to the auditorium and played an old time game of musical chairs. For those who want to experience it in person, the Old Davie School still offers guided tours by appointment and special events year round for kids and families. The Step Back in Time interactive program investigates life as it was for the pioneers of Davie and western Broward through artifacts, photographs, and hands-on activities. It includes a tour of the historic 1918 Davie School and insight into the life of a student. Activities might include writing with a dip ink pen, touring through the 1909 Florida Pioneer House, washing laundry on a washboard, pumping water from the well, making fresh orange juice or butter, or more. “Seeing firsthand and up-close how life has changed in 100 years makes it tangible,” said Stansell. “Black and white photos can tell us a lot about the past, but sitting in the 1920s classroom with the dip pen and ink makes history feel not so far away!” Old Davie School Historical Museum is located at 6650 Griffin Rd. in Davie. For information, visit www.OldDavieSchool.org.
Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 12/31/16) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. 1st Annual Mr./Miss Southwest Ranches Pageant Is A Success BY DEBBY TEICH
A
t the 1st Annual Mr./Miss Southwest Ranches Pageant, contestants had a chance of winning a variety of titles – and all for a good cause. The event raised approximately $4,000, which will benefit the Town of Southwest Ranches College Scholarship Fund through the Schools and Education Advisory Board. Established in 2012, the Town of Southwest Ranches Scholarship is funded through donations and fundraising efforts by the Education Advisory Board. The amount given each year is based on how much money is raised and how many students are eligible. To qualify, students must be 25 years or younger and a resident of the Town; complete an application package; show proof of enrollment in a four year undergraduate program or be enrolling for the upcoming fall semester; and complete 40 hours of volunteer community service. In 2016, nine students received scholarships. They were: Dylan Hernandez, Dylan Sunders, Kaitlyn Hodgers, Krishani Harrinauth, Klye Gleissner, Shaienne Demerieux, Shauna Stevens, Sierra Stevens, and Vivian Martinez. “We want to help young people who wish to continue their education beyond high school and to develop pride in their community through community service,” said Kathy Sullivan, SEAB chairperson, who came up with the idea for the fundraiser. In addition to the pageant, the fundraising event included food and drinks. Addie Weekley Roberts sang “I Ain’t Pageant Material;” Brooke Giacin appeared with her Bearded Dragon; Luke Roberts played the guitar and sang old country songs; and more. “This scholarship fundraiser was awe-inspiring,” said Sullivan. “I thought it would be a fun new way to raise money for the scholarship, but it turned out to be so much more! The small town feel was present in every act, which made it very special.” To enter the pageant, contestants had to be a resident of the Town of Southwest Ranches. Each paid a $25 entry fee and 20% of their score was based on fundraising.

Southwest Ranches Cub Scout Collects 72 Pairs of Shoes BY DEBBY TEICH
A
ccording to the U.S. Department of the Interior, Americans throw away at least 300 million pairs of shoes each year. They end up in landfills, where they can take 30 to 40 years to decompose. Most of these sneakers can be reused, while 100% of these sneakers can be recycled. Thanks to the efforts of 10-year-old Bryce Taporowski of Southwest Ranches, many of these shoes are on their way to helping some of the 600 million adults and children worldwide that live barefoot. “I wanted to help other people who need shoes,” said Bryce. Bryce is a member of Cub Scout Pack 160. In order to get his Arrow of Light badge, he needed to complete a service project that helped others in need. When he learned about the St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church’s annual sneaker drive fundraiser, he knew he had found the perfect project. The church partners with Gotsneakers, a local sneaker recycling organization that compensates them for every pair of sneakers collected, regardless of their condition. After the sneakers are
collected, Gotsneakers processes and distributes these sneakers around the world to help those in need. He sent a letter to friends and neighbors asking them to clean out any unwanted sneakers from closets, tie them together, and place them in a bag at their front door. Next, they were instructed to call Bryce to pick up the sneakers. He collected 72 pairs of shoes. The owner of Sole-lutions Footwear, who was moving his store location, donated the most shoes. Bryce has been in the Scouts for the past five years. His troop, which meets at Hawks Bluff Elementary, enjoys camp outs every month that include hiking, fires, s’mores, skits and songs. They have camped in the Florida Keys, Castellow Hammock Park and many other places. Next month, they will camp at Blue Springs to see the manatees In February, Bryce plans to cross over into Boy Scout Troop 224 and continue on until he becomes an Eagle Scout. “My family has been involved with Scouting for 10 years,” said Bryce. “It’s a great program. I love hanging with my friends and the fun things we do.” Bryce Taporowski with the shoes he collected for Gotsneakers

ooper City moms and their sons recently gathered for the Mother Son Night of Fun at the Cooper City Community Center. Since 2002, this hometown event has been a way for moms and their sons (K – 5th grade) to enjoy a special evening together, as they bond through a variety of fun activities and a bit of friendly competition. Many of them return year after year. The theme for the night was “Super Hero.” Over 100 moms and sons dressed up as their favorite super duos, including Harley Quinn and the Joker, Supermom and Spiderman, Batman and Robbin. They enjoyed an action-packed evening filled with activities, prizes, dancing and dinner. If mom was not available, grand-moms, step-moms, and aunts stepped in. The City of Cooper City has several other events throughout the year to promote positive family relationships. In addition to the Mom-Son Night of Fun, residents recently enjoyed Grandparents Day, which included fun, games, crafts, snacks and an old fashioned ice cream party. At the Annual Daddy Daughter Dance, Cooper City daughters enjoyed a memorable “date with dad” that included an evening of dancing, dinner and fun. This year’s theme was a Sock Hop and participants dressed in their favorite 1950’s attire or formal wear, as they took photos with “Elvis” and enjoyed an old fashioned soda station, arts and craft activity, DJ playing today’s Top Hits and few oldies, and more. or almost 32 years, Pill Box has been serving the South Florida area. Customers can have specialty prescriptions compounded or receive expert consulting on hormone replacement therapies. Pill Box also sells natural and homeopathic remedies, as well as all types of medical supplies. The store delivers both medical supplies and prescriptions and most insurance is accepted for those prescriptions. Pill Box currently has three stores in Pembroke Pines and one in Weston. It is about to add a fifth store, located at 7701 Nova Drive in Davie. President/CEO Steve Pressman answered some commonly asked questions.
Tell me about your business partner, Thomas Bohan, RPH, CPH. Tom and I are partners in the Davie store. Tom graduated from Nova Southeastern University, College of Pharmacy. His first job in a pharmacy was at Pill Box on Taft Street in Pembroke Pines. Over the last 22 years, he has held various positions from staff pharmacist to district supervisor with retail pharmacy chains and long term care providers.
Steve Pressman and Thomas Bohan
Why did Tom want to open a store in Davie? Although he has experienced many different aspects of pharmacy, he always dreamed of operating an independent pharmacy and serving the health care needs of the patients in the community in which he lives. He truly believes that opening a Pill Box in Davie will give the residents an opportunity to get their prescriptions and medical supply needs with excellent customer service above and beyond their expectations. Describe the Davie store. The Davie location is one block east of University Drive on Nova Drive and has plenty of easy parking and access. Like the other Pill Box stores, it has all the essentials you might need for the health and wellness for you and your pet(s), as well as fun stuff and gifts. How has Pill Box successfully competed against larger stores? Pill Box stores have an owner, who is also a pharmacist, available to greet and help customers and our prices are better. In addition, we can call the shots on a moment’s notice and get you almost anything the same or next day. The big guys can’t do that. We are the biggest pharmacy/ medical supplier in Broward County with fitters on staff for your medical supply needs and specially trained PCCA staff for your compounding needs. We carry specialty supplements. We also have very funny and unique cards and gifts that you won’t find in the big box stores. Where are the other Pill Box stores? The locations, as well as the years they opened, include: Taft Street (1985); Pill Box II in the Memorial Hospital West Medical Office building (1992); Weston Pill Box (1997) and Pill Box Pines West (2013). lthough the name “hackathon” sounds like it involves breaking into a computer, it is actually a venue for self-expression and creativity through technology. The Broward College computer science department recently hosted the 2nd Annual 24-hour Hackathon. Young technology enthusiasts had 24 hours to collaborate, plan, create and then pitch their coding projects to a panel of local technology leaders. Team Use-Full won “Best Overall” for their recycling website and mobile application. “Equipping our younger generations with the tools to master current technology and improve upon it is paramount to having a successful business economy in South Florida,” said Broward College President J. David Armstrong, Jr. “From cell phones to toasters, technology is a big part of our lives. I am proud of the initiative shown by all the participating students in this year’s Hackathon and I commend them for their creativity.” In order to participate in Hackathon 2016, students had to be currently enrolled at Broward College or another college or university in Broward County. Several high school students were also invited to participate. Students were allowed to participate regardless of their area of study or prior computer programming experience More than 60 students worked together in 12 teams to develop a range of applications and software. The event, which was sponsored by Ultimate Software, Inc., featured a number of workshops to help the students develop their projects, while technology experts provided mentorship and guidance on the use of different platforms and programming as well as project presentation tips. Children’s Classic Holiday Concert Introduces Kids to Classical Music BY DEBBY TEICH
O
n December 17, at 2pm, families will have an opportunity to introduce their children to the world of classical music at the Stirling Road Library. Children violinists from the Suzuki Music Academy in Davie will be presenting the “Suzuki Music Academy Children’s Classic Holiday Concert.” Families with kids of all ages will enjoy the kid-friendly, free concert. During the concert, a group of about 20 children musicians, ages 3 and up, will perform classic favorites by Mozart, Vivaldi, Bach, and Beethoven, along with traditional holiday music. The Suzuki Music Academy is celebrating its 31st anniversary this year. It trains students using the Suzuki Method, which provides formal classical music training to even the youngest children. The children that train at the Academy meet for classes one or more days per week. They also work daily with practice and checkups at home. Academy children musicians have appeared on local and national television. They have participated in community service, with performances for organizations at benefit concerts, music and cultural events and festivals, including Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, Fort Lauderdale Riverwalk Festivals, Young at Art Children’s Museum in Davie, and The National Coalition for the Homeless. Graduates of the Academy have gone on to study at major conservatories and universities, such as the Juilliard School of Music and Eastman School of Music, and have pursued successful careers in music.

The Academy’s director Richard Coff, who was trained by the creator of the Suzuki Method, Shinichi Suzuki, says that the study of classical music is an ideal and highly-rewarding activity for children at any age. “Mastery in music and musical expression foster the self-confidence that comes with self-discipline,” said Coff. “It is also a great activity for enhancing the development of poise and developing fine and large motor skills.” Lucy Oganezov’s ten-year-old daughter, Sophia, started at the Suzuki Academy three years ago. She will be performing at the holiday concert. “She is always eager to go to class,” said Oganezov. “The group classes have a very personalized feeling. Kids progress at their own pace, with Mr. Coff’s talented guidance, and are always encouraged to work together to improve one another. Sophia plays the violin beautifully, loves to listen to her friends play and enjoys performing at the concerts.” Nestor Pulido’s two children will be playing in the concert. Matthew, 8, and Sara, 6, have both been playing since the age of two. “We have seen the ‘impossible’ become not only a reality, but a fact,” said Pulido. “One of the most important things my children have learned is that they can achieve any goal they have by practicing.” Stirling Road Library is located at 3151 Stirling Road in Hollywood. Non-Surgical Treatment Options for Urinary Incontinence BY DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE
I
f you’ve ever found yourself darting for the bathroom as you feel a sneeze coming or laughed just enough to lose control of your bladder, know that you are not alone and it’s really no laughing matter. Urinary incontinence is far too common among women, who are twice as likely to suffer from this condition than men. In fact, it is estimated that a quarter of U.S women suffer some degree of incontinence, according to the American Urological Association. In addition to being a major inconvenience, some women are affected emotionally and psychologically as they become self-conscious and afraid of engaging in activities that might provoke an “accident” in public. Simple exercises such as jumping rope, walking, or bending can trigger a leakage. This form of incontinence, provoked by activity that puts pressure on the bladder, is known as stress urinary incontinence (SUI). There are several risk factors, including pregnancy, vaginal delivery, weight, and age, that can cause incontinence. During childbirth, pelvic muscles are weakened and the nerves that control the bladder can suffer damage. This is one reason urinary incontinence is more prevalent in women than men. Incontinence cases are unique to the patient as some may be mild while others are severe and could be indicative of a more serious health condition. If you have been suffering for a while with no signs of improvement, it might be time to seek professional help. What’s important to know is that you do have options and treatments are available to help you live a more comfortable, happier life. Simple lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, avoiding smoking and alcohol, as well as consuming wholesome foods, is one way to start. Pelvic floor muscle exercises have also proven beneficial in easing the symptoms. The problem is many women do not seek help or treatment. A professional in this field can guide you in retraining your bladder and in performing the exercises effectively. Surgery is not the only option. There are other alternatives, such as the O-Shot and the CO2 RE Intima. The O-Shot, for example, is a nonsurgical simple procedure available at Bellissimo Medical that uses the patient’s own plasma to stimulate vaginal and clitoral rejuvenation and activate the orgasm system leading to increased sexual pleasure. Although not originally intended to treat this condition, medical studies have shown an improvement in urinary incontinence in those patients who have received the shot. Some studies are suggesting over 80% success rate of SUI with the O-Shot. Other positive benefits include improvement in vaginal dryness and increased libido. In addition, the CO2RE Intima, which is a laser treatment, offers another nonsurgical option for SUI, not to mention a great treatment for vaginal atrophy and dryness. The CO2RE Intima is a CO2 laser which stimulates collagen renewal as well as contraction of the elastin fibers that increases the thickness of the vaginal walls and provides better support to the mid urethra underside. The result is significant reduction in SUI. This laser treatment can also address the outside external labia minora and majora to tighten skin laxity as well as improve pigmentation. As with any medical procedure, it is important to work with a qualified practitioner who can explain the available options and help patients decide what the best course of action will be for them. At Bellissimo Medical, we can certainly help you make the right choice. Call today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette practices Functional Medicine and is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Anti-Aging & Regenerative Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of AntiAging Medicine. Bellissimo Medical is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston. For information, visit www. BellissimoMedical.com.
Westside Regional Medical Center is Expanding to Better Serve the Community BY BEVERLY PERKINS
For over 40 years, Westside Regional Medical Center has been part of the Plantation community. As the population in the desired suburb grew, so did the hospital as it evolved into a 224-bed medical center and healthcare complex. The medical facility brings comprehensive healthcare and the latest technology to their patients which enables them to provide cutting edge services and procedures to the population they serve. Besides continuously expanding their services, the center recently received funds to expand the facility. HCA East Florida, a division of Hospital Corporation of America is embarking on a major capital investment initiative to invest approximately $650 million in healthcare facilities in Miami Dade,
Broward, Palm Beach, and St. Lucie. Westside Regional Medical Center was given $56 million to undergo an expansion which will include a 3-story tower and 72 private rooms so the hospital can better serve its patients. In addition, a new hospital will be built on the campus of Nova Southeastern University in Davie. This hospital is HCA’s single largest investment at $219
mid- 2018. During the construction process patients can expect little inconvenience as the front entrance will be closed, but the admitting entrance will serve as the main entrance during this time. The existing “hill” in front of the hospital will also disappear as this is where the 3-story tower will be built. The expansion will address the lack of private rooms which many patients
million. Construction should begin later this year. HCA East Florida already operates the Westside Davie ER, a freestanding emergency room facility on the NSU campus. The new construction at the Westside campus is scheduled to begin in early 2017 with a completion date
request. The addition of 72 private rooms will give these patients their much needed privacy while they are recovering and healing. Furthermore, more patients will be served and able to move more quickly from the Emergency Room to a room of their own.
“This is a very exciting time for Westside Regional Medical Center and our community,” said Barbara Simmons, RN, CEO, Westside Regional Medical Center. “Our hospital has continuously evolved and grown over the years, and this step in the evolution of Westside will meet patients’ needs plus add so much more value to the facility.” Westside Regional Medical Center’s services, combined with programs in specialties such as stroke and orthopedic, and varying from oncology to cardiology, and from surgery to emergency care are why they have been one of the leading healthcare facilities in South Florida since 1974.
Westside Regional Medical Center is located at 8201 W. Broward Blvd., Plantation, 33324. They can be reached at 954-473-6600 or www.westsideregional.com

Sushiato

Weston is a clear example of what a great fusion gives a city: diverse nationalities, cultures, styles, accents and flavors that melt to create a new identity.

Reducing Soda from Your Child’s Diet
R
educing this one item from your child’s diet can have the greatest single effect on their dental health. When the former mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, created policy to reduce the number of ounces in a large soda sold in his city’s restaurants, he was criticized by some for violating their human rights. The amount of press that this situation received not only illustrates the degree of political divide in this country, but also the love of Americans for their favorite bubbly beverage. It is estimated that between 50 and 80 percent of children in the United States consume at least one serving of soda per day. Some of these children are consuming multiple servings. Just as concerning as the high frequency of soda drinking are the large quantities. For example, the average serving size of soda in the 1950’s was 6.5 ounces. The average size currently is 20 ounces. As we will see, both the increased frequency and quantity of soda consumption have a negative effect on oral health. To understand why we have singled out soda, it is important to consider the factors contributing to the creation of dental caries (or cavities). In order to have a cavity, there needs to be certain cavity causing bacteria in the mouth and an acidic environment. This acidic environment allows for weakening of the surface of the teeth and the eventual colonization of the interior or the tooth by the bacteria. Sweetened soda contains “simple” sugars which are easily broken down by oral bacteria. The byproducts are acidic and lead to the weakening of the surfaces of teeth. What about non-sugared or diet soda? As it turns out, carbonation itself is very acidic having a similar negative effect. Here are a number of strategies to reduce the effects of soda and acid causing foods in general. ▸▸ L imit or possibly eliminate soda from our diets. Get into the habit of drinking water. Juice and milk have sugar as well. So try to limit their consumption to meal times. ▸▸ I f soda or any sugar foods are consumed, rinse with water afterwards. Water is very good at neutralizing the acidity levels in the mouth. ▸▸ Read the ingredients. Stay away from foods whose first one or two ingredients is sugar. ▸▸ Use topical fluoride regularly. Topical fluoride hardens the surface of the enamel and helps to reverse the effects of the acids. Fluoride can be gotten from toothpaste, rinses, and professional application. An alternative to fluoride is xylitol. Its mechanism of action is different than fluoride, but research of its frequent use is promising. ▸▸ Set a good example. Children are very impressionable and will model most behaviors observed by the adults in their lives. We try to be practical when making recommendations to our families. We do not stress the total removal of all sweet food/drink from the diet. But following the advice above and common sense strategies can make a significant change in our oral health. Remember, consistency is the key and healthy habits are best started early. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. LEGALLY SPEAKING
The Gray Divorce BY EVAN BARON
T
he Baby Boomer generation has had a huge impact on many categories of American life from music to art to technology. Those same boomers are now impacting family law as well. Statistics have shown that the overall divorce rate over the last 20 plus years has declined. This could be because the marriage rate has decreased as well. In spite of this overall decline in divorce, the rate for those couples over 50 has doubled over the same span of time. One out of every four divorces filed in 2010 were involving couples over 50. This increase in the divorce rate of these boomers has led to the term “Gray Divorce.” There are probably many factors which have led to this increase. As this generation increases in age, more and more people are celebrating their 50th birthday and, as such, the over 50 population has increased; the greater the number of people, the greater the number of divorces. There are however other factors to be considered. People are generally living longer, which results in potentially very long marital relationships. As people age, their prospective on life sometimes changes as well. Their mortality comes into issue and couples who are not happy in their marriage no longer wish to remain together for the later part of their lives. Some couples wait until their children are grown and have established their own lives. Parents feel that after raising their children it is now “their time” to explore and enjoy life. Unfortunately, in many instances their spouse is not who they wish to share this experience with. Finances are the most significant issues that accompany divorces for individuals in the later years of life. After years and years of working, owning a home, and placing funds in retirement, the plans that were in the past shared disappear with the signing of a Final Judgment granting the divorce. In Florida, equitable distribution of assets almost always results in an equal division between the parties. As a result, each will have only half of what they owned together. Expenses will increase as there will be the necessity of funding two residences. This often times leads to parents moving in with their children or taking in a roommate. In addition, because the majority of their working years are behind them, they have less time to try and re-coup their losses. Homes, which are usually a couple’s largest asset, will often have to be sold. Monthly pension checks divided between the parties can result in a party having to continue working beyond the normal retirement age. There may be an alimony component which could cause additional financial complications. Although divorce proceedings for more mature adults can be less complicated due to the avoidance of child-related issues, there are financial issues which less mature couples do not have to address. I strongly suggest that before decisions are made it would be best to discuss your concerns with an experienced family law attorney. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

KEEPING THE HOLIDAYS HEALTHY
7 Reasons to List Your Home Before 2017 BY ZONA HORTON, CRS, GRI, E-PRO, REALTOR
REAL ESTATE
T
here are many reasons to list your home before 2017. Here are seven of them: 1. First-time buyers tend to buy existing homes. First-time buyers are struggling to find affordable options in the new-home market. Sales of low-priced new homes dropped in September, with just 2 percent of all new home sales . . . [nationally], the U.S. Commerce Department reports. That’s down 5 percent from last year. According to National Association of Realtors, “…we find the majority of first-time buyers tend to buy existing homes, because there aren’t many new homes on the market in the starter home price range.” 2. Inventory in many key areas of Davie and Cooper City are low. Low inventory drives up prices. Homeowners tend to wait until after the holidays and receipt of their yearly bonuses to put their houses on the market -- either changing jobs or their personal situations. According to NAR’s latest Existing Home Sales Report, the supply of homes for sale is still under the 6-month supply . . . 4.7-months. Therefore, beat the “January-February” crowd to the market. 3. The elections are over. Realtors have noticed a lot of “pent-up demand” during the election drama and build up. Many have been waiting for the election results to make a move. 4. Homes show better during the holidays. People who look for homes during this time are serious buyers, as they may be visiting South Florida from other parts of the world. Buyers tend to be more sentimental and emotional and may be more amenable to your price. Some must buy before the end of the year for tax reasons. They may be willing to pay a higher price to close early to be in your home before the holidays. 5. Informed consumers realize that buying is cheaper than renting. Annual leases may be coming to an end and the tenant may be tired of the uncertainty of rising rental rates. The results of the latest Rent vs. Buy Report from Trulia show that homeownership remains cheaper than renting with a traditional 30-year fixed rate mortgage in the 100 largest metro areas in the United States. The updated numbers actually show that the range is an average of 17.4% less expensive in Honolulu (HI), all the way up to 53.2% less expensive in Miami/West Palm Beach [areas], and 37.7% nationwide! The nationwide rate of homeownership stands at 62.9%. A homeowner realizes that their home is a savings account and one of the best ways to accumulate wealth. Therefore, to sell and upsize is a great vehicle to continue in that practice. 6. Interest rates have remained low. Even though home prices have appreciated around the country, they haven’t greatly outpaced rental appreciation. Therefore, South Floridians can get a great price for their homes and should purchase before the end of the year to get settled in their new residences to establish homestead exemption. 7. Prices are projected to appreciate by 5.3% over the next year, according to CoreLogic. If you are moving to a higher-priced home, waiting will wind up costing you more in raw dollars (both in down payment and mortgage payment). These reasons are substantiated with facts and figures. Call your Realtor today for a FREE market analysis and strategy for your continued success.
Do you ever wish that everyday could be Thanksgiving? All the delicious turkey, creamy mashed potatoes, tasty green bean casserole, and mouth-watering pecan pie. While your mouth may be saying “Yes!”, your waistline is calling out “Whoa!” – and for good reason. The holidays can be a real challenge if you are watching your weight. But you don’t have to sabotage your diet. Here are a few tips to help you navigate the buffet table without depriving yourself. Eat before you eat. This may sound counterproductive, but if you eat a wholesome breakfast and lunch you can avoid overeating dinner later. That way you’ll have more control over your appetite because we tend to eat too much when hungry. Go light on the calories. Many holiday goodies are loaded with extra fat and sugar, including mashed potatoes with all the butter and sweet potatoes covered in marshmallows. Recipes can be healthier by making a few substitutions, such as fat-free chicken broth to make gravy or plain yogurt in casseroles. When possible, choose breast meat rather than leg meat and remember to remove the high-calorie skin from your meat. One size doesn’t fit all. Just because certain dishes are offered doesn’t mean you have to sample every one. Avoid the all-you-can-eat mentality and limit yourself to smaller portions if you cannot control the ingredients used in a dish. Good serving sizes include about a baseball size serving of fruit, a deck of cards size portion of meat, and a computer mouse size helping of veggies. Don’t cover your whole plate. There’s no need to pile your plate high with every food that is offered. Look over the buffet table first and then make your selections. Opt for reasonable-sized portions of holiday favorites that are served only once a year. Save room for dessert by skipping seconds. Eat s-l-o-w-l-y. By savoring and chewing every bite thoroughly and putting your eating utensil down between bites you can enjoy your meal and be satisfied with one plate of food. Leftovers are better the next day anyway. Pace yourself and eat only until you feel full. Drink plenty of water and try to keep alcohol down to a minimum since calories from alcoholic drinks can add up quickly. Put down your fork and go for some fresh air. Spread out the food and fun by going for a walk after your main meal and then having dessert later. It’s a great way to get in some exercise and spend quality time with your family. If you are eating out for the holidays, ask for food that is steamed, grilled or broiled rather than fried or sautéed. Request that sauces and dressing be served on the side and watch out for super-sized portions that tempt you to eat too much. Try not to be overly hard on yourself if you overeat. ASK THE MAYOR
BY DAVIE MAYOR JUDY PAUL
O
n September 21, 2016, the Davie Town Council approved the FY2017 budget. The Town continues to find and to implement innovative ways to ensure that we are keeping our millage rates as one of the lowest in Broward County, while providing exceptional service to our residents. For FY2017, the operating millage rate is 5.0799 mills, which has been reduced two years in a row. The debt service millage rate for FY2017 is .6163, which is 13.9% less than the millage rate levied for FY2016. Town Administrator Richard J. Lemack and staff take on the challenge every year to ensure that the Town’s budget is not only fiscally viable, but serves and addresses the needs of our residents. The Town recently passed a resolution affirming its opposition to the Florida Environmental Regulatory Commission’s decision to raise the limits on the amount of known carcinogens and toxic waste allowed to be dumped into waterways and reaffirming its opposition to extreme oil stimulation “fracking.” The Town firmly believes in protecting and preserving its natural open space environment, wildlife habitat, and water resources. The best way we can protect these resources is by proactively preventing contamination and environmental pollution. The Town will continue to work with Broward County and other municipalities to oppose practices that endanger our environment and drinking water supply. Do your part by writing to the EPA and tell them not to approve this request. Recent grand openings and ribbon cuttings for Outback Steakhouse on University Drive and Marando Farm and Ranch at 5151 SW 64th Avenue excited everyone. Keeping with our rural and agricultural heritage, Marando Farm and Ranch is a 10-acre Davie Park that is now home to 600 chickens. It offers you the opportunity to collect your own organic eggs from free range hens. We now have three great venues east of University Dr. that offer fresh fruit, veggies, delicious meals and opportunities to see and touch the wonders of agriculture. Spykes Grove and New River Groves each offer something special to our community. Together with Marando, all your needs are met in one convenient area of town. The School of Rock opened on Flamingo Road and Orange Drive and offers great programs for our youth. Guess what’s coming to Davie? WaWa has broken ground at the corner of Stirling Road and Davie Road Ext. A second site is also anticipated at the corner of Reese Road and Davie Road. I attended the Project Stable Annual Benefit Dinner at the Old Davie School on October 15. It was a delight for me to introduce this year’s honoree, Representative Katie Edwards. She spoke about her vigorous attention to local and state issues, as well as her dedication to her constituents, the agricultural community, and children with special needs. I presented her with the distinct honor of being Project Stable’s distinguished honoree. The Southeast Circuit Rodeo finals were held November 10, 11, and 12 at the rodeo arena and our Veteran’s Day ceremony was on November 11 at Veteran’s Park.
