The True Meaning of the Holiday Spirit

I

t is hard to believe , but winter is at our door .

While we generally do not get the snowflakes or the frosty winter temperatures, we do get the holiday season. The upcoming holidays may have different meanings to many of our readers due to our diverse cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs, but for all of us this should be a time to reflect on the year gone by. It’s the season to gauge our own conduct. Have we reached out to our neighbors to lend a helping hand to those in need? Have we made enough time to truly spend with our children, our parents, our family and our friends? This is the time to mend minor disagreements, to forgive and forget. This is also the time to think of those less fortunate than ourselves. We should teach our children to share our good fortune with our loved ones, as well as those in need. There are families right here in our communities who need our assistance. Help make the season brighter for them by giving generously. Consider giving your children gifts they will cherish for a lifetime; the gift of love and the gift of giving. The holidays are the perfect time to teach your children to be thankful for what they have and to help others. For that is truly what the holidays are about.

We are thrilled to be able to share this event with everyone at no cost and hope we will have a great turnout of riders, as well as spectators.” Check in/registration is at 8am and classes begin at 9am. The event will include a variety of classes, such as speed challenges (barrel racing, pole bending), Western (showmanship, pleasure, equitation),

English (showmanship, pleasure, equitation), Hunter (showmanship, Under Saddle, equitation) and more. All of the classes are limited to 15 entries. Trophies and ribbons will be awarded to 1st place winners. Those in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th places will receive ribbons. “The greatest reward is seeing the growing confidence this experience gives to children,” said Lauretano-Haines. “Seeing the beaming smile on the face of a rider who has never competed before or won anything is such a beautiful way to experience the rural lifestyle Southwest Ranches has to offer! Spectators enjoy a beautiful park and the feeling of witnessing great triumph for some very committed little ones!” Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park is located at 5840 SW 148 Avenue (Volunteer Road) in Southwest Ranches. Registration is required. For information, call 954-3437452 or send an email to dlauretano@ southwestranches.org. students throughout Davie recently learned about the importance of working smoke alarms. They competed in the Town of Davie Fire Rescue/Fire Prevention Bureau’s 18th Annual Fire Prevention Week Essay/ Poster Contest, and enjoyed visits from the Fire Prevention Bureau. This year’s theme was “Working Smoke Detectors Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month.” “The contest is designed to contribute to the education of our children and their families, as well as our local merchants,” said Betty Daly-Hilsman, who coordinates the program. “They learn about fire awareness, safety and prevention.” Students in grades K-3 created posters, while those in grades 4-5 wrote essays. All Davie elementary schools were eligible to participate. Approximately 60 students from eight schools submitted posters and essays: Flamingo Elementary, Fox Trail Elementary, Gloria Dei Lutheran Academy, Hawkes Bluff Elementary, Parkway Christian School, Silver Ridge Elementary, Somerset “Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Academy, and Summit-Questa Every Month,” “Develop a Plan for your Montessori School. Sunshine Harvesters Club Participates in National 4-H Science Day By Debby Teich

N

ational Youth Science Day is one of

the many ways that 4-H teaches youth across the nation how to respond to challenges in their communities and the world. Members of the Sunshine Harvesters 4-H Club recently participated in this year’s event, Rockets to the Rescue, an interactive project that explored the field of aerospace engineering. In light of the recent natural disasters, such as Typhoon Haiyan, the National 4-H Council asked youth to design and build an aerodynamic food transportation device that could deliver a payload of nutritious food to disaster victims. It was an opportunity for them to learn engineering concepts, develop math skills, learn about nutrition and help solve a relevant, global issue. Members of the Sunshine Harvesters Club, which is comprised of 12 homeschoolers in 1st to 8th grade, divided up into small groups to complete the project. They used materials from a kit to help them build and launch their own rockets. The kit contained a box of raisins, PVC pipe, cotton balls, string, rubber bands, corks and more. They supplied their own two-liter soda bottle to propel the rocket. “The kids had to use their creativity and problem solving skills to determine the best way to design and launch the rocket that carried a payload of four raisins,” said Jackie Matzirakis of Davie, who coordinated the project for the 4-H group. “Each team developed their own strategies to meet several challenges.” Matzirakis’s two children, Annaleisa, 10, and Nicolas, 12, participated in the project. Annaleisa’s team wanted to be the last one to launch their rocket, so they could learn from the prior groups. “By going last, we were able to see the different angles in the trajectory of the rockets from the other teams and adjust ours,” said Annaleisa. “I really enjoyed the project. It was fun and interesting.” Nicolas’ group alternated the person who launched the rocket according to the challenge. “A small team member jumped on the soda bottle for the target challenge, so we did not over shoot it,” said Nicolas. “A big kid jumped for the distance challenge, where accuracy did not matter. I really like science and enjoyed the experiment, especially since I might want to be an aerospace engineer.” Fourteen-year-old Faviola Velazques of Davie also participated in the project. “The project was educational and fun,” said Faviola. “It was challenging to decide how much pressure to put on the bottle. I also enjoyed designing the rocket with my favorite colors, pink and blue.” The mission of 4-H is to empower youth to reach their full potential, working and learning in partnership with caring adults. The four Hs in 4-H are: Head (managing, thinking), Heart (relating, caring), Hands (giving, working), and Health (being, living). Members work on these four values through fun and engaging programs.

nate? Has your skin tone lost radiance and the texture is less smooth? Do you feel the shape is more droopy? Although there are many options on the market to rejuvenate the skin, many come with unwarranted side effects of surgical scars or prolonged downtime. Utilizing a method known to athletes for years to facilitate healing and repair, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), can have profound anti-aging effects on the human body. The Platelet Rich Plasma allows the body to rejuvenate the skin by utilizing your own cells to release growth factors that increase the production of collagen and circulation. Platelet Rich Plasma is obtained through a simple blood draw in the office. Once your blood is drawn,it is then placed into a specialized FDA approved machine that is used to separate the blood to obtain the most concentrated amount of your body›s platelet rich plasma. Note all machines to extract Platelet Rich Plasma are not the same and many are non-FDA approved. Those machines that are non-FDA approved will be unable to provide the same results, as they are limited in obtaining the proper amount of concentrated growth factors necessary for the rejuvenation. These growth factors are the same that your body releases to repair yourself when injured. What is exciting is that this will work on the body once injected on areas where there is no injury and will start repairing itself. The effect is increased collagen production, new blood vessels and new fatty tissue in the skin which was never injured. The result is better skin tone, radiant glow, and a lifted appearance. To enhance the Platelet Rich Plasma, a procedure which is trade-marked to provide additional repair and results is known as the Vampire Face Lift™. This procedure, which not only uses your own body’s platelets, but also a hyaluronic acid filler such as Juvederm, may be used to give a more lifted and naturally sculpted appearance. Only a handful of physicians are certified and trained in this innovative natural procedure - the Vampire Face Lift™. This technology has also been trade-marked for other procedures such as the Vampire Breast Lift™ and the O-Shot™. Just as the name states, PRP can enhance the breast by increasing volume of fatty tissue to give a more lifted and fuller appearance, in addition to improving crinkling skin typically in the cleavage area due to sun damage. Sensation has also been known to be improved with Platelet Rich Plasma, as sensitivity is sometimes lost from breast feeding, implants or surgery. Vaginal repair, increased sexual arousal, and improvement if not cure from urinary stress incontinence may be achieved from the O-Shot™. Just as with the other procedures mentioned above, the Platelet Rich Plasma works on the area which it is placed into to repair and rejuvenate. The increased circulation can illicit an increased arousal after sexual stimulation, in addition to the PRP repairing the vaginal pelvic floor, which may be the major factor in urinary stress incontinence. What is amazing is that after a single treatment of the O-Shot™, many have had complete resolution of their urinary incontinence. Rejuvenate naturally. What better way to treat yourself this holiday season!

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding.

Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first.

Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. Cooper City Residents Share Cancer Survival Stories By Rachel Sharpe, Student Writer

“A

m I going to die from this?”

This was the first thing 52-year-old Debbie Mathews of Cooper City asked when she received a phone call from her doctor telling her she had breast cancer. “I went through six months of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy and 28 rounds of radiation,” said Mathews to a room full of aspiring doctors and other health professionals about her journey to recovery. Mathews, along with three other cancer survivors, recently shared her story with members of American Medical Student Organization (AMSA), University of Florida’s largest premedical organization. The four women spoke on behalf of I Had Cancer, an online social support network for cancer fighters, survivors and their supporters. Caryn Frishman, another Cooper City resident who also spoke on the panel, is a wife and mother of three kids. The 47-year-old is a former teacher, a model, actress, tennis player and even the manager of her own knitted-accessories business, Caryn’s Creations. When Frishman started to feel exhausted at the end of every school day, she knew something wasn’t right. “I went to the doctor and they told me I needed to take some time for myself,” Frishman said. “They told me I had ‘super-mom’ syndrome.” On March 13, 2003, Frishman received a dreaded phone call from her nurse. She had been misdiagnosed and had thyroid cancer. “I dropped the phone on the kitchen floor,” said Frishman, who remembers the exact moment 11 years ago. Despite reassurance by doctors, who told Frishman she had the “best type of cancer to have,” Frishman said she was nervous and unprepared. “Cancer is still cancer,” Frishman said. “It’s still scary and it still changes you, your family and who you are.” The discussion inspired AMSA students and reminded them about the importance of providing compassionate care and remaining empathetic with patients.

“The panel made me realize the humanistic side of medicine is the most important side, and it is often overlooked by people pursuing this field,” said AMSA member and freshman health science major Valerie Aber. After beating their own battles with cancer, Mathews and Frishman felt the need to help others fighting similar battles. Both have since made it their mission to fundraise as much as possible and give back to their community. In the past four years, Mathews has participated in numerous fundraising Debbie Mathews (left) and walks and utilized social media to spread Caryn Frishman (right) awareness about breast cancer, individually raising around $50,000 for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. She has also organized fundraisers with local restaurants such as California Pizza Kitchen to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Frishman is the captain of her own Relay For Life team, Caryn’s Crusaders. She recently participated in a Rally For The Cure tennis event to benefit Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “Having cancer has made me realize that there’s always somebody worse than myself,” Frishman said. “I don’t wish cancer upon anyone, but I think it’s made me who I am today.” Rachel Sharpe graduated from Cooper City High School and is now a sophomore majoring in public relations at the University of Florida. She is involved with many student organizations on campus and enjoys traveling and volunteering in her free time.

University School Student Teaches Peers How CPR Can Save Lives By Debby Teich

Southeastern recently participated in a hands-only CPR course, leaving them more prepared to help someone survive a cardiac emergency. Senior Shari Kumar, who learned the importance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) firsthand, organized the event. “After witnessing Fire Rescue perform CPR on a friend who had a cardiac arrest, I wanted to learn that skill to be able to save not just my friend’s life, but anyone who needed help,” said Shari. Shari’s experience with her friend motivated her to take a course in CPR. After completing her training, she made it her mission to raise awareness about heart conditions and help prevent cardiac-arrest deaths. “There are more than 400,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests that occur in the US every year.” said Shari. “Sadly more than 90% of them die. With CPR, the chance of survival can be doubled or tripled. Hands-only CPR does not require mouth-to-mouth breaths and is an easy to learn skill. With 4 out of 5 cardiac arrests occurring at home, chances are the life you may be saving could be that of a loved one. It is worth it!” In 10th grade, Shari started the American Red Cross Club at school. Club members participate in a variety of health and safety preparedness projects, such as Flu Awareness Week and Trick or Treat for Fire Safety. The club’s largest project is the annual CPR training event, “Keep the Beat Alive.” It was initiated last year and involves the entire school. During this year’s event, American Red Cross staff and volunteers conducted the Citizen CPR training with the assistance of the club officers. After Alejandro Sanchez listening to a talk on cardiac arrest practices CPR.

After listening to a talk on cardiac arrest and CPR and watching a video, the students got some hands-on training and practiced performing compressions. “The gym was full of life as the students rhythmically performed CPR to the beat of the 80’s classic Stayin’ Alive,” said Shari. “This song has the perfect beat for Cole Bianco, Elizabeth Resnick, Zachary Hermann, Rylee hands-only CPR at100 beats/ Simons, and Shari Kumar participate in the CPR training. min. Now we have 600 more lifesavers in our community.” Rachel Guttman attended the event. “It was a very enlightening and educational experience, which opened my eyes to the importance of CPR,” said Rachel. Shari wants to repeat the event on an annual basis at the school. She is also hoping to make CPR training a high school graduation requirement in the state of Florida. “With approximately 150,000 students graduating from high school each year in Florida, we can generate that many lifesavers into the community every year,” said Shari. Although Shari is still not sure where she will go to college, she says that she plans to pursue a pre-medicine track with a major in Public Health. Ultimately, she wants to become a doctor.

He has had the opportunity to help shape the lives of approximately 1,600 students on a daily basis. “My favorite part is being around young people, being a part of their lives, and watching them grow,” said Father Dalton. “It’s wonderful to see how ambitious they are and how they challenge themselves to be prepared for the future.” Father Dalton believes that the greatest change over the past 10 years has been the explosion of technology, but says that the Father Dalton poses with statue of Archbishop McCarthy. fundamentals of education have remained the same. “In the fifty years since I was a boy in Ireland, the basic classes that students are taught haven’t changed,” said Father Dalton. “It’s still Math, English, PE, Geography, Sciences, Music and History. McCarthy, received iPads and tutorials on how to leverage the new technology. In 2013, the school built an 8,000 square foot iLounge. McCarthy is now an Apple Distinguished School, with every student using an iPad for access to information, as well as their books, assignments and other academic requirements. “Most students are more technologically advanced than we are and know they need to be tech savvy for the future,” said Father Dalton. “The iLounge allows students the freedom to learn, share, and work together using the availability of information at their fingertips. It gives them instant access to information.” The school calls the concept iCatholicEd, since it blends the school’s Catholic identity with the integration of technology. McCarthy is currently one of the most technologically advanced high schools in the state and recognized as a School of Excellence by the Catholic Honor Roll. “As a result of our innovation and vision, we’ve helped other schools move into learning through technology,” said Father Dalton. Although Father Dalton just turned 70, he does not seem to be slowing down. When he is not at McCarthy, he can usually be found at Saint Bernadette Parish, where he has been Pastor since 1991, or attending meetings, officiating masses, visiting sick students in the hospital, and more. His desire to provide students with the tools they need to succeed remains his passion. “It’s important to engender in the students a willingness to learn and a desire to succeed,” said Father Dalton. “We want them to be motivated to be and do their best, not only in preparing for college, but in all their endeavors. And most importantly, we must provide them with the spiritual foundation they will need in life. I can only hope that I have helped them on their journey.” Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School is located at 5451 S Flamingo Rd. in Southwest Ranches. For information, visit www.mccarthyhs.com.

Heart Disease Risk Factors: What You Need to Know Most heart and blood vessel problems develop over time and occur when arteries develop atherosclerosis, the gradual buildup of plaque inside the arteries. If left unchecked, significant plaque buildup can lead to reduced blood flow through the arteries and eventually to blood clots that occur when plaques rupture. Ultimately, it is the effect of clots on the flow of blood to the heart or brain that can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

What are the risk factors for heart disease?

There are many risk factors that contribute to the development of heart disease. It is important to know that some risk factors, called “non-modifiable risk factors,” such as hereditary genetic conditions, cannot be changed. But some risk factors, called “modifiable risk factors,” can be controlled or treated. The more risk factors you have, the greater your chance of developing heart disease. And higher levels of each risk factor correlate with a higher risk for heart disease.

Viviana Navas, MD

Cleveland Clinic Florida Cardiologist

Modifiable risk factors Hypertension is the single biggest risk factor for stroke. It also plays a significant role in heart attacks. It can be prevented and successfully treated, but only if you have it diagnosed and stick to your recommended management plan. Abnormal blood lipid levels, that is high total cholesterol, high levels of triglycerides, high levels of low-density lipoprotein or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol all increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Changing to a healthy diet, exercise and medication can modify your blood lipid profile. Tobacco use, whether it is smoking or chewing tobacco, increases risks of heart disease. The risk is especially high if you started smoking when young, smoke heavily or are a woman. Stopping tobacco use can reduce your risk of heart disease significantly, no matter how long you have smoked. Non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke increase their risk of heart disease as well. Physical inactivity increases the risk of heart disease and stroke by 50%. People who don’t exercise regularly are 1.5 times more likely to develop heart disease. That’s why exercise is such an important part of a heart healthy lifestyle. Obesity or being overweight, especially if a lot of weight is located in your waist area, increases your risk for health problems, including high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, high triglycerides, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Type II diabetes is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease and stroke. Having diabetes makes you twice as likely as someone who does not, to develop heart disease. If you do not control diabetes then you are more likely to develop heart disease at an earlier age than other people, and it will be more devastating. If you are a pre-menopausal woman, your diabetes cancels out the protective effect of estrogen and your risk of heart disease rises significantly.

What can you do you improve your heart health?

Know the risk factors, and be sure to talk to you doctor about the ones that apply to you. Take action to change your lifestyle, and work to prevent your modifiable risk factors from compromising your heart health.

St. David Students Give Back During Service Learning Day By Debby Teich

S

tudents at Saint David C atholic School recently spent the

day reaching out to those in need during the 2nd Annual Service Learning Day. It was an opportunity to “bring out their inner saint.” “It is important that Saint David students understand that in our community there are many people in need,” said Principal Jane Broder. “Through the Service Learning Day, they were able to help their community in real and tangible ways. It produced a sense of proud accomplishment that as children they made a difference in the life of someone else.” Approximately 470 students in grades PK 3 through 8 participated in the day long project. They rotated to six different centers designed around a saint. All of the supplies were funded by donations the students collected from a Dress Down Day. “The saints are a perfect example of what it means to love and serve others,” said Broder. “We wanted the students to learn more about the role models of our Catholic faith and to use their time, skills and talents to be role models for others as well.” The eighth grade students led the younger kids in each of the centers. They introduced the saint, led them in prayer for the saint, gave directions and helped the students complete the project. The centers included the following: ▸▸ St. Francis – Designed, decorated and colored bandanas for dogs at the

Humane Society. ▸▸ St. Michael – Made “thank you” cards for the Armed Forces that contained a prayer, hand written letter, yellow ribbon, and St. Michael medal. ▸▸ St. Monica – Created comfort blankets for sick children in NICU at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. ▸▸ St. Peregrine - Hand painted smooth stones to create Prayer rocks with words of encouragement to help patients relax and feel comforted at Memorial Hospital Cancer Treatment Centers. ▸▸ St. Jude – Made chemotherapy care packages that contained stuffed turtles, gum, lemon candy, stress balls, socks, tissues and more for patients in the pediatric oncology unit of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. ▸▸ St. Paul – Dipped hands in paint and pressed them on a canvas to create artwork to decorate the halls of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Once the students completed the project, they received a symbol with the name of the center’s saint in a necklace pouch to wear throughout the day. The symbols were a cloud, hand, paper bag satchel, yellow ribbon, dog and blanket. “Through these experiences at Saint David, we are building a foundation for the understanding that service to others should last a lifetime,” said Broder. Saint David Catholic School is located at 3900 South University Drive in Davie. For information, visit www. SaintDavid.org/school.aspx or call 954-472-7086.

Holiday Cheer? By Evan Baron

M

ost people think of the holiday season with

gleeful anticipation of time with family. For couples who have been through a divorce, the holiday season can often be a very stressful time. This stress can also be felt by the children of a divorced couple. It is not uncommon for holiday visitation issues to surface during this time of year. Hopefully the parties’ settlement agreement or Parenting Plan is specific as to time sharing. Over the course of approximately 30 years of practice, my clients have experienced many issues concerning holiday visitation. The biggest obstacle to solving an issue in court during this time of year is the reality that court time is very difficult to schedule during December. As such, last minute issues usually will not be addressed. Of course, the parties are always able to try and work things out on their own or with the help of attorneys and mediators. I would certainly suggest not waiting until the “last minute” to address any concerns. The best way to insure there will be no conflicts during the holidays is to anticipate potential problems ahead of time and address them in the marital settlement agreement. The more specific your agreement is, the more likely you will not experience conflicts along the way. For couples with minor children, who have been divorced in the past five years, Parenting Plans have been mandatory. These Parenting Plans are designed to be very specific as to time sharing in an effort to head off any trouble in years to come. Unfortunately, these Parenting Plans were not used prior to the latter part of 2008. Therefore, many existing agreements do not include this provision. I believe the most important thing to remember is that any time sharing arrangement should always keep the best interest of the children as a priority. Children want to spend time with both parents and this is especially true during the holidays. They also want to be a part of any family gatherings. Sometimes that is not always possible, but advanced planning may be able to achieve this goal. Often parents divide the entire winter break in half, with Christmas Day being the “exchange day.” As an example, in odd numbered years, such as 2013, perhaps Dad has the children from the day school ends until noon Christmas Day. Mom will pick up the kids and keep them until school begins again. Next year, they can reverse the schedule. In some cultures, Christmas Eve is more of a celebration, so perhaps one parent can celebrate every Christmas Eve and the other Christmas Day. Also, remember that “gift giving” is not a competition, with the winner being the parent who spends the most money. Often times the finances of each parent may not be the same and one must buy gifts within his/her budget. For a parent to embarrass the other by purchasing a more expensive and lavish gift is only going to lead to hard feelings and potential problems. Hopefully, the parents can discuss this issue beforehand and plan together. Often parents wish to visit family out of town. Consider the feelings of your former spouse and the children in the planning such a trip. Children have the need to be with extended family during the Holidays. Perhaps holiday trips out of town can be rotated from year to year between parents. Mom and Dad can certainly make the holiday season a joyous time for their children or they can focus on themselves and make it a time that everyone would like to forget. Ask the Expert

Would My Child Benefit from Sedation Dentistry? (Part One) By Dr. Maria Grosman

W

ould my child benefit from sedation den -

tistry? Like the answer to most medical questions, the answer is not so straightforward. There are many factors which go into the decision making process. These factors include maturity/anxiety of the child, type of sedation available and financial resources available to the family. In our experience, the consideration of each of these variables is of upmost importance in consistently making the right decision for the pediatric dental patient. The first step in the process is to gather all of the available information. This is accomplished by performing a complete assessment of the patient. The information gathered includes the obvious dental needs, diet, home care, age, emotional maturity, and dental anxiety. Most decisions regarding the treatment plan can be made at this stage. For example, a two year old who suffers from carious lesions (cavities) on all primary (baby) teeth would likely require a more comprehensive sedation in order to complete the entire dental treatment in a non-traumatic manner. A child at this age does not have the cognitive and emotional ability to complete the treatment without potential long-term negative effects. In other words, without the right approach, this child may become an adult with a long term phobia of dentistry. On the other hand, a 16 year old who has been consistent with regular checkups and has already had dental treatment in the past would unlikely require sedation. Most other scenarios fall somewhere in between. Once the needs are established, the type of sedation would be considered. Types of sedation range from simple anxiolysis with nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) administered in the dental office setting to general anesthesia done in a hospital setting. This is where the experience and intuition of the pediatric dentist is of most importance. Ideally, we would like to use the medication facilitating the completion of the treatment with the least sedative effect. Next month’s editorial will review the various types of dental sedations in more detail. It is at this point, that the parent/guardian must be informed and educated as to the process. For example, inhalation agents like nitrous oxide (laughing gas) completely exit the body prior to the end of a procedure. Other medications, depending on their route of administration, exit the body more slowly and prior arrangements should be made for an adult to sit with the child on the drive back home from the dental visit. Lastly, financials should be considered when making final decisions. Insurance breakdowns provided by the major insurance carriers are usually very specific as to what will be covered in most situations. However, if there is any ambiguity an estimation of benefits (EOB) may be requested from the insurance company prior to the start of treatment. Finances may also direct treatment. For example, in a situation where there is a lot of dental work to be completed, doing so under a “deeper sedation” may seem more expensive because of the higher cost of administration. However, if there is a large amount of dental work needed, doing so under a “lighter” form of sedation may result in the need for multiple visits. This might cost more in both time and money. Our advice is to focus on prevention. The sooner healthy habits are established, the less likely extensive treatment will be needed. Additionally, early exposure to the dental office (when dental work is not yet needed) decreases anxiety levels once dental treatment is necessary. There are also many benefits to the development of a relationship. The child is more comfortable and is more easily read by the doctor. Difficult conversations between parent and doctor are easily handled once there is trust. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 954-236-3434.

hat is Happening Nationally ?

Nationally, home sales are at their highest level – up 2.4% from sales in August according to Realtor.org on October 21, 2014. Lawrence Yun, NAR’s Chief economist, stated, “Low interest rates and price gains holding steady led to September’s healthy increase. Traditional buyers are entering a less competitive market with fewer investors searching for available homes, but may also face a slight decline in choices due to the fact that inventory generally falls heading into the winter.” Prices are up 5.6%, and inventory is up 6.0%. Distressed sales are down 10% in September of 2014 and down 14% from last year. What is Happening Locally? Locally in Davie and Cooper City, we are experiencing the same prosperity. Even though the average “for sale” price is down 18.1% compared to last year, the average sold price is UP 24.8% compared to last year. The average priced home for sale in our area is $706,000 and average price home sold is $483,000. The average price per square foot is up 12.5% which is $180 per square foot. Homes for sale are up 41.2% compared to last year. Homes closed in September of 2014 are down 22.9% compared to last year; however, this is due to our shrinking inventory which causes prices to continue upward. We currently have 5.5 months of inventory – which is still indicative of a Seller’s market. Our inventory was so low last year that an increase of 82.9% in inventory has now reached the height of 5.5 months of inventory. Homes stay on the market an average of 69 days – up 46.8% compared to last year. Homes are selling within 93% of their originally listed price. In September of 2014, homes for sale represented 298 units, up 41.2% compared to last year. Homes placed under contract represented 72 units, up 60% compared to last year – a definite sign of a recovering Real Estate market.

EVERY 4.8 SECONDS A CAR CRASHES but we still love to drive. What is Happening Financially? According to Freddie Mac, after falling for four consecutive months, the average commitment rate for a 30-year, conventional, fixed-rate mortgage rose to 4.16 percent in September from 4.12 percent in August. Despite the slight increase, interest rates are 33 basis points less than a year ago (4.49 percent). “Economic instability overseas is leading to volatility in the stock market and is causing investors to seek safer bets, which will likely keep interest rates in upcoming weeks hovering near or below where they are now,” said Yun. “This is welcoming news for consumers looking to buy, although they could temporarily become more cautious by less certain economic conditions.” Regardless, the low inventory in our area is causing a shortage in our marketplace. If you are contemplating selling your existing home and buying a larger or smaller home, now is the time to do it. erves are small string - like structures that

provide sensation and/or give the signal to muscles to move. Some nerves may be susceptible to injury because of their location in the foot or ankle. The most commonly injured nerves are on the ball of the foot, located at the base of the second, third and fourth toes. These nerves provide sensation only to the middle three toes and may be compressed by a ligament that runs over it. Here is a look at the symptoms, causes and treatment options for pinched nerves in the foot. Symptoms: ▸▸ Pain on the ball of the foot. ▸▸ Numbness, burning, shooting or tingling sensation in the toes. Some or all of these symptoms may be present. ▸▸ Cramping in the toes. ▸▸ Aggravated by running, aerobics or activities that put stress on the ball of the foot. ▸▸ Pain may be lessened by taking the shoe off and rubbing the foot. ▸▸ Driving may aggravate the ball of the foot. Causes: ▸▸ Compression of the nerves against a tight ligament. ▸▸ Arthritis or bone spurs from the adjacent joints. ▸▸ Soft tissue cysts causing nerve compression. ▸▸ Trauma to the ball of the foot. ▸▸ Nerve may become irritated from tight shoes or sports that put stress on the ball of the foot, especially tennis and running. The goal of treatment is to reduce the inflammation around the nerve and prevent further trauma to it. Treatment options include: ▸▸ Anti-inflammatories may be used to lessen inflammation; oral medication or cortisone injections may be beneficial. ▸▸ Changing to wider shoes without a heel. ▸▸ Changing activities temporarily from weight bearing exercises to biking and swimming. ▸▸ Physical therapy may be of benefit in reducing inflammation. ▸▸ Metatarsal pads. ▸▸ Orthotics to correct faulty biomechanics. They can be used in small heels and all sports shoes. ▸▸ Localized injections into the nerve to stop the nerve from functioning. Removing the nerve surgically may be necessary if conservative treatment fails. This is an outpatient procedure. A local or twilight anesthesia is used. The procedure takes approximately 15 minutes. One or two days off of work is needed. A surgical shoe is worn for four to five days and then a sneaker may be used. Postoperative pain is minimal. The patient progresses to regular shoes over a two to four week period. Certain activities such as biking and swimming can be done in a week; sports may take three to eight weeks to resume. Davie Update By Davie Mayor Judy Paul

I

n D ecember 2009, one of the grants issued by

the Town of Davie Youth Education Safety Advisory Board funded a butterfly garden at Silver Ridge Elementary School. We asked Karen Gonzalez, the teacher from Silver Ridge who applied for the grant, for an update and were pleased with her news…

My, how our little garden has grown! A starter seed in the form of a grant from the Town of Davie Youth Education Safety Advisory Board has blossomed into something beautiful. Since that start, we have watered, weeded, planted and pruned our gardens and we now have two butterfly havens that have also become certified as Wildlife Habitats from the National Wildlife Federation and Naturescape Broward. These gardens have allowed us to support many life science lessons with our students and help them to develop a sense of wonder toward the natural world. We are grateful for the start the Advisory Board provided us. Our biggest financial support came from winning Broward County’s P3 Eco Challenge in 2013. (P3 = Protecting our Planet for Posterity.) That award money also enabled us to grow a reading garden outside our media center. We are grateful to The Town of Davie Aboretum for a lovely white crepe myrtle that shades a corner of this new green space. Additionally, Whole Foods Market provided us with another majestic shade tree. By far, our most exciting news is the arrival of the rare Atala butterflies! These native species of greatest conservation need (as so deemed by Florida’s State Wildlife Action Plan) were once thought to be extinct, but are making a comeback in areas where a conscious effort to plant their host plant, the coontie, is found. Silver Ridge is so proud to be a part of this effort and to have these lovely little beauties floating through our campus! On September 5th, Silver Ridge Elementary School had the honor of being a stop on the U.S. Department of Education’s Green Strides Tour. Our students led the way through the campus, sharing their expertise of our school’s green spaces, including our vegetable gardens. Along the tour, our atalas rose from their overnight roost in spectacular glory, wowing the crowd almost as much as our students already had! We didn’t know how far our little garden would grow, but are so pleased that the Town of Davie YES Advisory Board grant has helped us to develop green spaces on our campus and to grow nature lovers who inspire others! Karen Gonzalez, NBCT 4th Grade Teacher, Silver Ridge Elementary School Enjoy your holiday season and know that we are all blessed to be celebrating together in such a wonderful town. Please join us for the Lighting of the Green on December 7, at 6pm, at Town Hall. See the horse parade of lights and Santa arriving on a fire truck. View the decorated Christmas Trees, Menorahs and Kinaras, which will be awarded prizes and then our famous snow play area in the arena. See you there!!! If you have any news from your school or neighborhood you would like me to share, please contact me at jpaul@davie-fl.gov.

December 2014 | Our City Davie

By Sheriff Scott J. Israel

T

he Broward Sheriff’s Office is deeply involved

in supporting our community, especially during the holiday season. What many people don’t know is that much of our generosity would not be possible without two volunteer organizations. The Broward Sheriff’s Advisory Council, Inc. and the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County, Inc. are two local non-profit organizations that not only provide year-round support to public safety in Broward County, but also to our community. The generosity of these outstanding organizations is demonstrated through fundraising efforts to nonprofit groups as well as the less fortunate to improve the quality of life for all Broward residents. The primary mission of both the Broward Sheriff’s Advisory Council and the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County is to provide needed and compassionate support to the families of law enforcement officers and firefighters who are killed or become permanently disabled in the line of duty. This includes all law enforcement officers and firefighters from any local agency in Broward County, not just from BSO. However, their support does not stop there. The Broward Sheriff’s Advisory Council was established in 1985 and has since provided community support to a myriad of causes. Among a number of initiatives, it has supported organizations such as HANDY (Helping Abused Neglected Disadvantaged Youth) and has provided for the holiday feeding, where more than 2,000 complete dinners were provided to needy and under privileged families in Broward County. The Broward Sheriff’s Advisory Council sponsored the 2013 Bicycles for Champions Christmas Extravaganza, where 200 bicycles, helmets, locks and other items were provided to needy children in our community. This year’s Bicycles for Champions event is growing even larger to provide more than 300 children with bicycles and other gifts. The Broward Sheriff’s Advisory Council has also supported BSO through the purchase of a much-needed canine that can sniff out unauthorized cell phones and other contraband that may be found in our county jails. The use of unauthorized cell phones by inmates that are smuggled into our jails allows them to facilitate the commission of new crimes, including attempts to intimidate witnesses who are scheduled to testify against them in court. Most recently, the Broward Sheriff’s Advisory Council assisted BSO by financing public service announcements that are directed at our children and their parents, including crime prevention tips and positive guidance to our youth. As I like to say, our youth are 100 percent of our future! The Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County, established in 1999, has also been instrumental in giving support to those who need it most. It plays a vital role in the annual holiday Shop with the Sheriff, along with many other charity events, to ensure the neediest children have school supplies, clothing and nutritious meals. Members also contribute time and resources to the Anti-Defamation League, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Hispanic Unity, HANDY, 2-1-1 Broward and many other organizations to support educational and public awareness programs. Among its many initiatives, the foundation has an at-risk scholarship fund to provide scholarships to students with financial needs. Last year, it established the BSO Community Partnership Initiative, which supports grassroots community programs, including organizations that assist people experiencing homelessness and those with mental health needs. Fire rescue and law enforcement personnel protect and serve the community, not for recognition, but because it is their job, their passion, their chosen field of public service. Likewise, both the Broward Sheriff’s Advisory Council and the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County provide essential services without expecting acknowledgement in return. I do want to commend both organizations for their commitment to all residents of Broward County. I would also encourage you to learn more about these outstanding organizations by visiting their websites at browardsheriffsadvisorycouncil.org and sheriffsfoundationofbroward.org. Please consider making a donation to the Broward Sheriff’s Advisory Council or the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County or consider joining as a member. Happy holidays! Nexus Shooting Has a State-of-the-Art Gun Store and Shooting Range By Debby Teich

breathe in complete comfort, despite the heat and humidity outside.

What is different about your shooting range? We created a true

entertainment experience. Our advanced virtual range, the Nexus Lanes, brings your shooting to the next level, while making it fun at the same time. Since the gun’s invention, people have been making holes in paper targets, which is of limited value when training and can become mundane over time. Our live fire technology lets you shoot your gun and real ammo at constantly updated interactive video targets, such as defensive scenarios, shooting galleries, zombie games, skill drills, asteroids and more. A computer provides instant feedback by scoring and analyzing each shot. We also have a standard paper target range. Additionally, we do weekly tactical and competition drills where shooters move and shoot through an obstacle course setup for real world training.
