You’re Never Too Old for a Spring Break

S

tudents shouldn ’ t be the only ones to enjoy

a Spring Break. This year, my family and I spent my sons’ Spring Break enjoying the wonders of Florida’s West Coast. Just a few hours from home we were able to spend an afternoon riding roller coasters and coming face to face with jungle creatures at Busch Gardens, only to spend the evening watching the sun set over a beautiful beach. That brief getaway was just what I needed to recharge my batteries. I came back to the office full of energy and memories of quality time spent with my family. Wherever your travel plans take you, now or in the future, don’t forget to bring along a copy of Our City Weston or Town Times magazine. Send us your picture posing with the magazine and you could be our Photo of the Month winner. In the coming weeks we will gather with our loved ones to celebrate the Easter and Passover holidays. For many of our readers, the holidays will not be a joyous time. They fear for their families as tensions rise in Venezuela under the communist dictatorship system. Please support our many Venezuelan neighbors and friends near and far as they fight to bring the current government regime to an end and let democracy rule. Sincerely, Sven Budzisch, Publisher/Owner

Preventive dental care

is important throughout your life, no matter your age. Keep your smile healthy by practicing good oral hygiene at home and scheduling regular checkups with your dentist. Here are a few simple ways that you can prevent the build-up of plaque and cavities:

• Brush your teeth at least twice a day • Clean between your teeth by flossing at least once a day. • Eat a balanced diet, and try to avoid extra-sugary treats. • Schedule regular checkups with your dentist every six months for a professional teeth cleaning. • Ask your dentist about dental sealants, a protective plastic coating that can be applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where decay often starts. If it’s been six months since your last dental checkup, then it’s time to

contact our practice and schedule your next appointment!

to continue their education beyond high school have an opportunity to get some financial assistance. The Southwest Ranches Education Advisory Board, in conjunction with The Town of Southwest Ranches, will be awarding scholarships to deserving students. The deadline to apply is May 1. One of the Board’s goals is to assist the Town with continued education. This is the second year that the scholarship program has been offered. The decision is based on school and non-school activities, service hours, work experience, weighted GPA, an essay of 250-300 words, and a minimum of two letters of recommendation (preferably one from a faculty member and one from a community member or employer). The scholarships will be awarded at the Town Council meeting in June. Scholarship money can be used for tuition, dorm/rent, food plan, books/school supplies, student activity fees, parking fees and lab fees. The application is posted on the Town’s website, www.southwestranches.org. Residents must: be under the age of 25 years old; have been a resident of Southwest Ranches the last two years; have served 20

On April 5, the Town will hold a picnic at Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park to raise money for the scholarship fund. Friends, families and neighbors will gather to enjoy a variety of foods from the Food Truck Round Ups, entertainment by D.J. Flash, a silent and Chinese auction, and a petting zoo from Animal Kingdom. All of the proceeds will benefit the Southwest Ranches College Scholarship Fund. Wendy Freed attended the picnic last year and plans to return again. “It was fun to spend time with friends and family and meet some neighbors,” said Freed. “I am proud to live in a place that offers scholarships for its residents. I have a daughter in high school who will apply for the scholarship when she is a senior.” For information, visit www.southwestranches.org; call 954-434-0008 or send an email to jromance@swranches.org.

The weekend ends with the Annual Founder’s Day Golf Classic on April 27, hosted by the Cooper City Optimist Club. “Founder’s Day is my favorite Cooper City event,” said Susan Day. “It is a great way to spend time with friends and neighbors. We always have a great time.” Individuals, groups, and organizations wishing to participate should stop by the Community Center or call the Recreation Department at 954-434-4300, ext. 233. Sample Great Food at the 15th Annual Generations of Taste By Debby Teich

Chefs and visitors enjoyed the 2012 event.

C

hefs of all ages have been tweaking their recipes , as they

prepare to compete for the coveted Wooden Spoon Award at the 15th Annual Generations of Taste. Visitors will have an opportunity to sample some of the finest home cooking in the area and vote for their favorite dishes. The event will be held on April 26, from 6-8pm, at the Old Davie School Historical Museum. “The crowd is always lined up waiting for the doors to open,” said Leslie Schroeder, Executive Director. “Come hungry and be ready to pick your favorites.” It all began 15 years ago, when members of the Davie Historical Society decided to publish a cookbook filled with traditional recipes from Davie pioneers. They created the event so that that the public could try some of the recipes before they purchased the book. Since then, the Society has published four cookbooks containing more than 300 recipes, from appetizers to desserts. They will be available at the event for $10. Society members are already working on the fifth one. The event includes recipes from all of the cookbooks, as well as those from

anyone who wants to participate. Cooks are invited to submit homemade dishes from any of the following categories: drinks, appetizers, soups, salads, breads, vegetables, main dishes, desserts, country cookin’ and kid’s cookin.’ They must bring enough food to supply 200 samples. Visitors can taste approximately 50 recipes and vote for the top choice in each category. In 2012, the last time the event was held, some of the winning dishes included: Swedish meatballs, broccoli salad, glazed carrots, baked macaroni and cheese, and chocolate truffle cake. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for kids ages 5-10. Kids under 5 are free. Chefs who win in each category earn the bragging rights to the Wooden Spoon Award. Their names are also published in the Old Davie School’s newsletter. All of the proceeds benefit the Old Davie School Historical Museum. On April 26, area residents will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite recipe at the Aster Knight Parks Foundation’s 2nd Annual Chili Cook-Off Fundraiser. It will be held at the Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park, 5840 SW 148 Avenue, from noon to 5:30pm. The contest is limited to the first 20 chili pots. Participants will include several local restaurants, as well as individuals in the area. For only $5, visitors can buy a card that entitles them to sample all of the recipes and vote for their favorite one. Last year, Jeff Crimmins was declared the winner for his “Smoking Dawg Chili.” He received a glazedstoneware, cooking pot trophy with an engraved plate that said, “Winner – Best Chili in Town.” Karen Parkerson Jeff Crimmins won the 2013 Chili Cook-off won second place for her “Parkerson’s Country Chili.” The event will also include DJ music and kid-friendly entertainment, such as a bounce house and petting zoo. The local volunteer fire department will be grilling hot dogs, hamburgers and chicken for donations.

The proceeds will benefit Southwest Ranches Parks and Recreation spaces, via the Aster Knight Parks Foundation, which has donated thousands of dollars to date to parks development in the Town of Southwest Ranches. Southwest Ranches’ inaugural council member Aster Knight started the Foundation through his own love of nature and the urge to preserve and protect the Town’s natural areas. Its mission is to “raise funds through public and private partnerships for parks, trails, and green space projects within the town of Southwest Ranches to further the Town’s motto of ‘Preserving Our Rural Lifestyle’ and provide a superior quality of life for the Town’s residents and visitors alike.” Howard Fabian plans to attend the cook-off. “I went last year and had a great time,” said Fabian. “I found two great recipes that I have been making at home. On a cold day, even in South Florida, there is nothing better than a big bowl of chili.” The cost to register is $50. Cooper City Resident Helps WWII Veteran Get the Medal He Earned By Debby Teich Photo Credit: James Naskrent

Rich Woolf presents Bernie Dudas with all of the medals he earned in WW II.

A

fter serving in the Navy from 1967 to 1970, R ick Woolf of Cooper City understands what it means to fight for his country’s freedom. When Woolf realized that WWII Navy veteran Bernie Dudas had never received the “World War II Victory Medal” he had earned 70 years ago, he found a way to get it for him. Woolf met Dudas while he was volunteering for Honor Flight, a non-profit organization that was created solely to honor America’s World War II and terminally ill veterans for all their sacrifices. Since 2005, Honor Flight has flown more than 100,000 veterans to Washington, D.C. from cities all over the country to see their memorial. “Over 800 World War II veterans die every day,” said Woolf. “They take their stories, history and enormous bravery with them. In another five to seven years, almost all of our WWI veterans will be gone. Since many are still among us, now is the time for action.” In October 2013, the newly formed South Florida chapter sent 16 WW II veterans on its inaugural flight to Washington D.C. Since most of the veterans were in their 80’s and 90’s, each one was assigned to a younger veteran to assist them on the trip. Woolf served as a “guardian” for Dudas, who was only 17 years old when he enlisted in the Navy and served as a gunnery and crane operator in the Pacific. The flight departed at dawn under crossed streams of water from the airport’s fire trucks. The itinerary included visits to the WWII Memorial, Arlington Cemetery and the Korean War Memorial. When the veterans returned home, they were greeted at the airport by over 1,000 cheering people, signs, banners, bagpipers and more. “It was a day that none of them will forget…nor will I,” said Woolf. “We can never repay these men and women who sacrificed so much to preserve our freedom. We can, however, honor this elite group of freedom defenders by flying them to Washington D.C. to see their memorial.” While Dudas and Woolf were touring the memorial, they learned about the World War II Victory Medal, which was first established as a service ribbon by Congress on July 6, 1945. By the time it was approved as a full medal in 1946, many

18

April 2014 | davie town times

eligible World War II veterans had already been discharged from the service and never received the medal. When Woolf realized that Dudas was one of them, he was determined to get him the medal he deserved. For many years, Woolf and his wife have held an annual barbeque, which typically includes several veterans. This year, they decided to add a recognition ceremony for Dudas. After Dudas’ daughter, Cindy Wolf, pinned the medal on her father, Woolf presented him with a medal case that included all the medals he earned through his World War II service. Following the ceremony, the crowd enjoyed cake topped with patriotic decorations. Following the Marine Corps tradition, Dudas, as the World War II guest of honor, was joined by Korean War veteran Jim Feldman, 87, of Miami, the oldest veteran. After they cut the first piece of cake using Woolf’s Navy sword, they presented it to the youngest veteran, popular local entertainer Spanky Pionegro, 65. Since the trip, Dudas and Woolf have continued to spend time together. “We have developed a very special relationship,” said Woolf. On May 10, the Honor Flight South Florida chapter will send another group of Veterans to Washington D.C. This time, the group has chartered an entire plane, with room for approximately 100 WW II Veterans and 100 guardians. The guardians will pay for their own expenses and there is no cost to the veterans. The chapter has been working hard to raise much needed funds. Dr. Shaw answered some commonly asked questions about his practice.

What is your (Dr. Shaw’s) background? I am

fellowship-trained in orthopedic sports medicine from the Florida Orthopedic Institute in Tampa. I have cared for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Yankees during spring training. I was also the University of Tampa Women’s Soccer physician during their national championship season in 2007. From 2008-2010, I cared for patients, while on staff at Imperial Point and Holy Cross Hospitals. I recently returned to my hometown of Pembroke Pines, after spending the last two years working at the Mayo Clinic in Georgia.

of surgeons, nurses, physician assistants, rehabilitation specialists and medical support personnel work with patients and their primary care physicians to develop a customized treatment plan. If they need surgery, they can be confident that they will receive the most advanced surgical procedures, using the latest technology. Dr. Jesse Shaw and his physician assistant, Tyler Vail, MMS, PA-C, regularly see patients Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm.

Describe your typical patient? We work with

patients of all ages, from youth to adults. We serve professional and amateur student-athletes, as well as recreational sports enthusiasts and regular patients who need orthopedic treatments for shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, ankle, and back injuries.

Describe your full-service approach. Our

full-service approach is designed to return the patient to maximum function as quickly and safely as possible. It integrates the patient’s primary care physician and surgeon with a host of clinical support staff. This unique continuum of care approach produces outstanding clinical and patient satisfaction results.

state-of-the-art health care delivery, including electronic medical records, digital x-rays, and the most advanced minimally invasive techniques for surgical procedures and orthopedic care.

Do you offer same day appointments?

Dr. Jesse Z. Shaw

What is the main focus of your practice? I specialize in ACL, knee ligament and meniscal surgery, as well as complex shoulder injuries, such as impingement, rotator cuff injury, and instability. I also treat patients for orthopedic conditions that are not sports related, such as arthritis, knee replacement, hip replacement, complex shoulder replacement, fractures and trauma injuries.

What is your philosophy? We take the time to properly diagnose patients. We ensure that they understand their specific condition, as well as all of the treatments available to them, including rehabilitation for a complete recovery.

How do you help injured athletes? Injured

athletes of all skill levels need an integrated, comprehensive sports medicine program. We use skilled, hands-on evaluation and diagnostic testing to create the best plan of care. Our clinical team also educates area athletes, coaches and parents about injury prevention and recognition, proper strength building, flexibility, conditioning, endurance and training techniques.

How do you help patients who need joint replacement? Caring for a severely injured or

diseased joint involves skilled, hands-on evaluation and appropriate diagnostic testing. We offer the latest technology for diseases and injuries to all major joints.

The highly trained team at All-Pro Orthopedics works with patients and their primary care physicians to develop a customized treatment plan.

How do you help patients with foot and ankle problems? We use the latest assessment

and treatment tools to correct foot and ankle problems, including sports-related injuries; complex fractures; reconstructive surgery related to trauma; and reconstructive surgery related to arthritis or deformity. Our experienced personnel are certified in custom casting, splinting and orthotics.

Our coordinated evaluation and treatment protocols are designed to provide timely, quality care. Our team of physicians, nurses, physical and occupational therapists and other staff members provide fully integrated care that will get you back to work fast. How do you help patients with hip replacement? Hip replacement is a surgical procedure

in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant. Hip replacement surgery can be performed as a total replacement or a hemi (half) replacement. It is generally conducted to relieve arthritis pain or fix severe physical joint damage as part of hip fracture treatment. Hip replacement is currently the most common orthopaedic operation, though patient satisfaction short and long term varies widely.

How do you help patients with issues related to hand and upper extremities? We use our clinical expertise to evaluate, treat and rehabilitate the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder. Our surgical team treats: soft tissue sprains, strains and contusions, overuse and traumatic injuries, degenerative and rheumatoid arthritis, rotator cuff tears, carpal tunnel syndrome, fractures, dislocations and more. Does Testosterone Cause Heart Disease? By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette

T

estosterone replacement therapy in all

forms (gel, creams, injections, pellets) has been rampant in the past five years. Testosterone replacement therapy ads are everywhere, from bill boards and magazines to TV commercials. Numerous well-designed medical studies have been published on how LOW Testosterone causes an increased risk of Heart Disease, Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome, High Blood Pressure, Increased risk of Mortality, Congestive Heart Failure, and Heart Disease. In fact, the review of the medical literature from the studies shows that Testosterone replacement therapy is associated with a decrease risk of coronary artery disease and even beneficial for those who already have coronary artery disease. So why are we hearing negative information based on two recently published studies?

We must first look at the some of the flaws of the studies: ▸▸ When prescribing Testosterone replacement therapy, it is imperative to follow up with levels to determine proper dosing. As with any medication, too much can cause harm. In the instance with Testosterone, supraphysiologic levels may cause a cascade of reactions to occur, such as conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) or Estradiol and Hemoconcentration of the blood. In these studies, not all participants had their levels checked after starting treatment. ▸▸ Basic blood work, such as CBC, was also not monitored in all the participants of the study. At high doses, Testosterone may cause the blood to become viscous (hemoconcentrated). Blood that is hemoconcentrated places an individual at higher risk for stroke and heart disease. ▸▸ Estradiol levels were not monitored in all the participants of the study. High estrogen levels in males have been documented to cause an increase risk of heart disease and stroke. Testosterone therapy may continue when proper treatment is given to lower estradiol levels. There are a multitude of well-formulated studies documenting the risks of having Low Testosterone and its relationship to increasing the risk of Heart Disease, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure and increasing the overall risk of dying. In fact, when properly administered, testosterone improves cholesterol profiles and ejection fraction of the heart. It also increases insulin sensitivity - helping those with diabetes or preventing those at risk for developing diabetes, and much more. As with any drug treatment, it is imperative to be seen by an expert in the field who practices Functional Medicine that specializes in Hormone Replacement Therapy. As you can see, there is a lot more that goes into prescribing Testosterone therapy than simply writing a prescription. To optimize health through Testosterone replacement therapy, levels must first be done to determine if you are a candidate and periodic testing to determine proper dosing of treatment and optimization of health. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. They both specialize in Functional Medicine and Bio-Identical Hormone Pellet Therapy. Their practice Bellissimo Medical is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston. International Orchid and Bromeliad Show Returns to Flamingo Gardens By Debby Teich

E

xperience the beauty and diversity of

orchids at the 33rd International Orchid and Bromeliad Show. On April 19 and 20, from 9:30am to 4:30pm, over 30 vendors will have rare and exotic orchids and bromeliads on display and for sale at Flamingo Gardens in Davie. “It is always a fun day for the whole family,” said Jim Pino, secretary for the Flamingo Gardens Orchid Society. “It is a great way to learn about orchids and find some great deals.” There will be demonstrations and lectures from orchid experts, as well as food and music. Visitors can also find a variety of supplies, such as wood to mount orchids and more. At the event, the Flamingo Gardens Orchid Society will be hosting a contest, which will be judged by the American Orchid Society. Three winners will receive a plaque. The Flamingo Gardens Orchid Society will award a $50 cash prize to the first place winner. They will also be selling $5 raffle tickets for a chance to win an orchid. The Flamingo Gardens Orchid Society is a not-forprofit organization that meets at 7:30pm, on the 2nd Monday of each month. When the club was formed in 1989, it met at Flamingo Gardens. Today, it meets at 7241 Taft St. in Hollywood. The society promotes the hobby of orchid growing through education of orchid culture in the community. Meetings include an informative speaker on

orchid culture, as well as an orchid raffle, orchid sales and refreshments. There are approximately 90 members, who live in the surrounding area. Although they come from a variety of backgrounds, all of them share a love of orchids. They are a friendly group and willing to share their experiences and knowledge with each other. On April 14, the club will hold its biggest fundraiser, where they will auction off orchids purchased from growers in Redlands and Homestead. “We invite all orchid enthusiasts to join in on the fun of growing orchids,” said Pino. Flamingo Gardens is located at 3750 South Flamingo Road in Davie. Admission to the Orchid Show is $18 ages 12+, $10 ages 4-11, members and children 3 or younger free. want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding.

Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first.

Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy in the back. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more…

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. University School Celebrates Diversity During Cultural Unity Week By Debby Teich

S

tudents at the U niversity School of

Nova Southeastern University’s lower school recently celebrated their rich cultural heritage. Grades pre-K through 5 participated in a week-long

exploration of culture and ethnic diversity, which culminated with a Unity Fair. Throughout the week, students learned about cultural anthropology by participating in discussions and activities aimed at helping students explore and share their family’s traditions, histories and cultural backgrounds. Parent volunteers visited classrooms to speak to students about their backgrounds and experiences. The week ended with a Unity Fair, which gave students the opportunity to “visit” various displays representing countries and cultures throughout the world. Each student brought along their “passport” and got it stamped as they traveled to the various destinations to sample food and learn about many different traditions. In

Trinidad and Tobago, they danced to the sounds of live steel drummers. In Colombia, they tried candy and pastries. In Japan, they learned phrases, such as “Ni hau ma?” The Upper School, grades 9 to 12, also paid tribute to and celebrated their cultural, ethnic and racial diversity during their International Night. The evening’s highlights included music, dance and drama presentations that reflected artistic expressions from all the different corners of the globe, a parade of nations with students presenting flags from the more than 50 countries represented by University School’s student body, and a “Taste of Nations” banquet that featured delicacies from around the world. What Will It Cost? By Evan Baron

T

he one question that I am always asked by a

prospective client is, “How much will this cost me?” It is obviously a very fair question, which deserves an answer. Unfortunately, often my answer is not well received by the individual. It is not because my answer suggests an extremely large fee, but rather the answer is open ended. I tell them I am unable to give them a complete cost, due to the fact that billing is based upon the amount of time it will take to conclude the case. The more time, the more work, the higher the fee. I explain that the fee is really controlled by the clients and not the attorneys. If they can reach a fair and equitable agreement the cost will obviously be less than a contested matter. The more a client litigates the more money they will spend. I do not “cap” my fees in a divorce action. I have been asked many times to quote a final, 100% complete price. I am unable to accommodate that request. It is unfortunate, but the cost of litigation cannot be determined at the initial meeting.

6400 Hollywood Blvd. Hollywood, FL 33024 1600 n. University Dr. Pembroke Pines, FL 33024

954-983-6400 954-989-9900 www.bpfamilycare.com

1655 North Commerce Pkwy., Ste. 201, Weston, FL 33326 email: Law@DivorceBroward.com

The cost of a divorce can increase based upon a number of factors. It often times is due to an unreasonable expectation by one or both of the clients. Unreasonable expectations often lead to litigation, because a settlement cannot be achieved. Unfair settlement offers can also lead to higher fees, since nobody should settle for an unreasonable and unfair resolution. In addition, some aspects of a divorce case are not even negotiable. As an example, child support is determined by Florida Child Support Guidelines and is statutory. Therefore, the amount of support is not negotiable between the parents. Higher fees can be generated by lack of cooperation or failure to act in a timely fashion. Financial discovery is an important aspect of a divorce case. There are certain requirements which must be fulfilled within a specific time frame. Many clients get totally stressed out when I hand them their “homework,” which requires gathering certain financial documents and completing a Financial Affidavit. I do understand why it becomes a stressful task. Just because you may be going through a divorce does not mean that all other aspects of your life are put on hold. The financial tasks are time consuming. Many individuals who are going through a divorce are not emotionally ready to deal with the completion of financial documents. Unfortunately, these tasks have to be completed in a timely fashion. Failure to do so will lead to motions being filed and hearings being set before a judge. The result is always additional fees, which should not be necessary; but for the client’s failure to complete the task in a timely manner. These are just some examples of situations which can cause fees to increase. As I stated previously, very often it is the client who controls the cost. Perhaps now you can understand why a set fee in a divorce is not a possibility.

Real Estate

Three Things I Know For Sure . . . By Zona Horton, CRS, GRI, e-Pro, Realtor

T

he State of Florida is a wonderful place to

live, work and play. Here are some things you should know:

Homestead Exemption

If your current home is your “primary residence,” you surely have filed for homestead exemption. It astounds me when I begin my research to find that my Seller has never filed for homestead, yet has lived in his home for years. What are the advantages? An eligible property owner in 2013 saved anywhere from $640 to $1,152. In 2013, the average Broward homeowner with Homestead also saved an additional $620 in taxes, because of the SOH benefit. As our market rebounds, homesteaded properties will benefit from the 3% tax assessment cap (starting in the year after you first obtain homestead). The SOH cap limits assessment increases during years of rising market values.” Is there still time for you to apply? If you miss the March 3, 2014 deadline to timely file any exemptions, Florida law allows you to “late file” for 2014 exemptions until September 17, 2014.

9900 Stirling Road Suite 227 Cooper City, Fl. 33024

www.KayFinancial.net *Securities offered through H.D. Vest Investment Services SM, Member SIPC, 6333 N. State Highway 161, 4th Floor, Irving, TX 75038, 972-870-6000. Kay Financial Services, LLC is not a registered broker/dealer or independent investment advisory firm.

Portability

Florida’s “Portability” law allows property owners to transfer their “Save Our Homes” benefit earned on a previous Florida homesteaded property to a new Florida homesteaded property. If you are applying for a new homestead exemption AND you held a homestead exemption on a previous property within the last two (2) tax-years anywhere in Florida, you submit a portability application with your homestead application, which transfers any tax savings you have earned, but it does NOT transfer your Homestead exemption from one property to another. You MUST first apply for a Homestead exemption in order to be eligible for Portability.

Flood Insurance

The hottest of today’s topics, flood insurance, is a “national” issue and not a “state” issue. In July 2012, the U.S. Congress passed the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012, which requires the NFIP to raise rates to reflect true flood risk, makes the program more financially stable, and changes how Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) updates impact policyholders. The changes will mean premium rate increases for some - but not all—policyholders over time. Buyers who purchase homes built before 1974 will be the most affected. My word of warning to Sellers: DO NOT LET YOUR FLOOD INSURANCE LAPSE or you could be subject to the newer, higher rates, especially if you own a pre-1974 residence. Governor Scott of Florida attempted to delay the Act from coming into effect, so as not to affect our recovering housing market. He was unable to do so. What should you do if you plan on purchasing a home built “PRE-FIRM” or before 1974? Be sure to have an elevation certificate ordered on that property and get quotes from a reputable insurance agency prior to making an offer. There is also an addendum that I use to protect the homebuyer. If you have any questions, please contact me and I can send you more information.

Ligaments that are loose or weak allow the arch to flatten. When this occurs, muscles try ineffectively to hold up the arch. Pain in the foot, legs, ankle and back often develops.

CAUSES:

▸▸ Loose or weak ligaments of the arch are the most common reason. ▸▸ Bone abnormalities that may be hereditary or acquired from injury (tarsal coalitions or fractures). ▸▸ Trauma to tendons and ligaments on the inside of the arch and ankle may cause the arch to slowly or acutely drop (posterior tibial tendon dysfunction).

▸▸ Pain in the arch, feet, ankles and legs aggravated by standing, walking and running. ▸▸ Leg cramps and pain at times during the night. ▸▸ Premature fatigue during activity or simple walking. ▸▸ Weakness in the legs during running. ▸▸ Stiffness and pain in the lower back, especially in the morning. ▸▸ Lack of interest in participating in sports or activities that require running. ▸▸ Poor cardiovascular fitness.

SIGNS:

▸▸ Flat arch when standing is most common. The arch may look normal off weightbearing. ▸▸ Many arches appear normal when standing but the front part of the foot points out compared to the rearfoot. This is a foot that functions like a flat foot and may be a problem. ▸▸ When looking at the feet from behind the heel bone appears to turn out. ▸▸ Knock-knees. ▸▸ Feet and ankles look abnormal. Bulging of the bone on the inside of the ankle and foot. ▸▸ Abnormal gait with the feet excessively turned out. ▸▸ Abnormal shoe wear. ▸▸ People usually are overweight due to lack of exercise.

RELATED PROBLEMS:

▸▸ Development of bunions, hammertoes, heel spurs, neuromas and sagging joints. ▸▸ Knee and leg problems. ▸▸ Severe collapse of the foot necessitating reconstructive bone surgery. ▸▸ Limited activity causing weight gain and poor cardiovascular fitness. ▸▸ Muscular tightness in the foot, legs and back. ▸▸ Osteoarthritis in the foot, ankle, knees, hips and back. ▸▸ Back pain, especially in men over 30.

TREATMENT:

▸▸ History and physical examination to identify areas of pain and underlying causes. ▸▸ Proper shoe gear to support the foot. ▸▸ Orthotics (insoles) custom molded to the foot to support the foot and entire extremity. ▸▸ Physical therapy to strengthen weak muscles and stretch tight muscles. ▸▸ Short period of cast immobilization to stretch excessively tight muscles that may be aggravating the condition. ▸▸ Surgery if all efforts at conservative care have failed to alleviate a person’s problem. Failure to consider a surgical alternative may condemn an adult with severe deformity to continued pain, suffering and poor health.

Unexpected Cavities By Dr. Maria Grosman

A

lmost daily, we have a child come in to our

office with many more cavities than anticipated. In some instances, they are “regulars” coming in for their sixmonth checks and everyone present attests to their daily brushing ritual. Still, in a relatively short period of time, these cavities have formed between the teeth. To understand this situation better, it is beneficial to look at what are the underlying causes of cavities. In order to form a dental cavity there are certain ingredients which are a must. First of all, cavity causing bacteria must be present. The most notable of these bacteria are the Streptococcus mutans. Although the thought of bacteria entering the mouth is an unsavory one, it is a fact of life. In fact, these bacteria make a home in our mouth at a very early age and are usually transmitted unintentionally by a child’s caregiver (i.e. when blowing on a hot spoon during feeding time). The bacteria colonize on our teeth and form a plaque. They use sugars we ingest to increase the size of the plaque. Biproducts from these colonies are acidic. This decrease in pH begins the process of breakdown of the tooth’s outer layer, the enamel. Once this shell is accessed, the bacteria can start to travel through the tooth. Considering the process of the creation of the cavity, there are only a few ways to interfere with the process. We cannot prevent the introduction of the bacteria, as they are a normal presence in our mouths serving other functions. For example, when certain strains of bacteria are removed, we become prone to oral fungal infections. Recent studies using xylitol have been shown to reduce the presence and effectiveness of the cavity producing bacteria. Brushing and flossing help to reduce the plaque through mechanical means. Fluoride, both topical and systemic, has been shown to “strengthen” the enamel making it more resistant to the process of decay. This leaves only one item to solve the mystery of the rampant cavities - diet. A person who brushes/flosses and goes to the dentist for cleanings and fluoride application can still have cavities, depending on intake of certain foods and liquids. As it turns out, sugar is not the only advantage that our diet provides the bacteria. Many of the foods we are consuming are acidic and therefore lower the overall pH in the mouth speeding the process of cavity making. For example, diet soda may have no simple sugars useful to the bacteria, but the carbonation creates a very acidic oral environment. Studies have shown that many of the popular sports drinks are more acidic than batteries used for small appliances. I recently read an article in one our professional journals using archeological findings to link the occurrence of cavities to diet. In this study, they found that the first people to move from hunter gathering (a diet very low in simple sugars) to food production (higher in simple sugars) showed a statistically significant increase in the occurrence of cavities. These unfortunate people had cavities in 50% of all their teeth. I am considering opening another office in that neighborhood. The bad news is that our modern diet is full of sugary acidic foods. Our children’s heroes promote them in every marketing medium. Our office philosophy is not to deny our children their treats but rather to modify habits of eating. For example, a child who drinks a sports drink after practice should do so at one sitting rather than doing so throughout the day. They should drink and then rinse his/her mouth with water after drinking. This automatically balances the acid levels in the mouth. If hard candy is eaten, brushing should be done. Sugary snacks should be eaten with meals. In between meal snacks should be of a healthier variety, like fruits veggies and granola. The idea is to be creative rather than restrictive. Happy eating! Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. Brain Aneurysms: More Than Just a Headache An aneurysm — a ballooning or bulging out of an artery where the wall is weak — can wreak havoc if it bursts. When aneurysms rupture in the brain, the resulting hemorrhage can cause stroke, coma, brain damage or other serious problems. In fact, approximately forty percent of ruptured brain aneurysms are fatal and only twenty percent of patients survive with no permanent damage. There is no clear reason why a brain aneurysm forms, but there are many things that can contribute to its development. Things such as smoking, hypertension, family history, traumatic head injury and other disorders may increase a person’s risk of developing an aneurysm.

Ryan McTaggart, MD Cleveland Clinic Florida Interventional Neuroradiologist

A ruptured aneurysm is a serious health risk that should be attended to immediately. Along with a severe headache, other symptoms can be; neck stiffness, drowsiness, nausea, mental confusion, dizziness, and vomiting. The most severe consequence of brain aneurysm rupture is the tear that allows blood into the space surrounding the brain, causing stroke called a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Ten to twenty percent of those who have a subarachnoid hemorrhage will die before getting to a hospital. Of those who survive, approximately thirty percent will have moderate to severe disabilities. Though not all brain aneurysms rupture, it is difficult to predict whether or when a rupture may occur.

Treatment options for brain aneurysms are determined by the size, shape, and location of the aneurysm in addition to the patient’s age and overall health. There are two main options for a patient with a brain aneurysm. First is open surgery performed through a surgical opening in the skull. Using an operating microscope and tiny instruments, the surgeon attaches a small metal clip at the base of the aneurysm. Because blood is prevented from flowing into the aneurysm, the chances of it rupturing are greatly reduced. Recovery time typically is four to six weeks. The second, and preferred option, is endovascular surgery (from within the blood vessel), performed through a catheter (a hollow, flexible tube) delivered from the groin to the blood vessels in the brain. Thin platinum wires are pushed into the aneurysm, where they conform to the wall of the aneurysm forming a coil mass. Since blood clots within the coil mass, the chances of a rupture are greatly reduced. Recovery time is only one to two days. The risk of suffering a brain aneurysm can be reduced through a series of lifestyle changes that include not smoking, exercising regularly, eating a balanced, low fat diet, getting help for alcohol and/or drug abuse, and controlling high blood pressure. Experienced specialists at Cleveland Clinic Florida offer the latest techniques and newest devices to give patients with aneurysms the best chance for a full recovery.

How Brain Functioning Affects Learning & What Can Be Done to Improve Your Child’s Ability By Dr. Fabian Redler

W

hen a student is struggling to learn , or

when a student wants to expand how much they can learn, teaching has its limitations. It does little to expand the brain’s capacity to hold more information. It’s like trying to fit six gallons of water into a five gallon tank. A more logical approach should involve increasing the brain’s capacity to handle information in terms of quantity and speed. Educators are finally starting to understand the role that overall brain-ability has on our children’s education, specifically as it relates to mathematics, reading fluency, comprehension, and the student’s overall motivation to learn. But brain ability is not so much about what they learn, as much as it is about how much they can learn.

Processing skills, also known as brain skills, are the ‘muscles’ of the brain. They are responsible for how information enters the brain, what information enters, and how much of it enters. Therefore the development of these underlying brain skills are an essential part of every student’s learning potential, yet teaching or tutoring alone does little to influence growth in these areas. One of the hottest trends in the field of education and neuro-psychology is brain training. Tutoring centers that incorporate brain training as part of their curriculum have seen impressive and rapid improvements beyond ordinary tutoring. The improvements are due to growth in essential brain skills such as attention, memory, and thinking speed, so that learning progresses at a remarkably fast pace. Attention and memory are just some of the brain ‘muscles’ responsible for how kids (and adults) learn. Consider the difference it would make in your own life if you were able to increase your focus and memory capacity by years in just weeks. When these muscles are weak, they limit a student’s academic performance and are the cause of most learning deficits. When they are strong, they can make the difference between being an average student or an above-average one. Teaching is essential in the learning process, but it is often limited in the way it can help students reach their potential. Next time your youngster is studying their spelling words, practice having them spell the words in their head backwards. This will do more than just challenge them. It will force them to visualize the words with more intensity. This is a brain skill known as visual processing that is essential for good reading comprehension. Since ‘brain muscles’ determine how much a student can lift, it makes perfect sense to have a professional identify your child’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses, and then create an individualized training plan to strategically improve their ability. Dr. Fabian Redler is the president of What’s On Your Mind, Inc. He has been helping kids reach the stars since 2000. For information or to schedule a consultation, call 305-937-6463.

Ask the Sheriff

ne of my priorities as S heriff of B roward County has been to protect our county’s future, and that future rests in the lives – and in the hands – of today’s children. Neglect, abuse and the social and emotional well-being of our children is something I take very seriously. Unfortunately, Broward County ranks high among Florida counties for the number of monthly child abuse reports. Child abuse and neglect can be triggered by a persistent economic crisis and the increased stressors that come with it; however, there is no excuse for caregivers putting any child’s safety at risk. For the past 14 years, the Broward Sheriff’s Office has assumed full responsibility for child abuse investigations in Broward County. Our Child Protective Investigations Section (CPIS) embraces this responsibility by collaborating with other law enforcement agencies, mental health, substance abuse and social services community partners. In 2013, there were 14,150 Broward child abuse investigations – a slight increase from 2012. BSO CPIS also referred 1,100 families to dependency court to oversee families warranting child protective services last year. Domestic violence and substance abuse issues were the most prevalent factors in these cases. The majority of BSO CPIS investigations involved collaborations with multiple agencies to determine services and child safety options. BSO also embraces using less restrictive actions whenever possible. The agency referred another 1,400 families to family preservation programs under agreements with BSO to aid families and reduces child-welfare recidivism. The additional funding from the state’s proposed 2014-15 budget, if adopted by the legislature, will enable BSO (and all Florida sheriffs’ offices) to improve the outcomes for the at-risk children with whom we work. The proposed budget commits more than $31 million for child protection services piloted by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and an additional $8 million to fund the sheriffs’ offices that conduct child protective services. The safety of our county’s children and families is critically important, and this additional funding will allow CPIS to have resources that are vital to this essential task. Currently, BSO has 69 active investigators. The average caseload per investigator is approximately 22 cases, which is higher than the DCF-recommended maximum of 15 cases per investigator. BSO CPIS needs more eyes in the field, and we need to ensure our investigators have the tools they need to make better decisions for our families. This funding will not only put BSO within standard recommendations for best practices, but it will also greatly improve the outcomes for the at-risk children in our county. Our entire community shares in the responsibility of protecting children who are often reluctant to come forward to report abuse for fear of retaliation. They sometimes feel helpless and without hope. It is up to us, the community, to ensure our children remain safe and protected. The Broward Sheriff’s Office embraces community prevention efforts. BSO CPIS directs our families with problems to get suitable help, treatment and services before family issues worsen and child harm results. As of October 1, 2012, Florida law expanded and now requires any person who knows or has reasonable cause to suspect that any child is abused to report such knowledge or suspicion to the Florida Abuse Hotline: 1-800-96-ABUSE. CPIS can be contacted at: (954) 797-5299. If you see something, say something to your local law enforcement agency. All families deserve to live in communities with resources and information that provide safe and healthy experiences for our children.

Slender Fit U Makes Dieting Easy By Debby Teich

S

lender Fit U is helping clients turn their

bodies into fat burning machines. They are losing 1/2 to 2 pounds of fat per day without exercise, diet pills or packaged foods, and they are keeping it off. The medically supervised program helps dieters modify their relationship with food and eating, resulting in an easily maintained, longterm weight loss. It is the last diet they will ever need to do. Geri Kelleher, Owner and Program Director, answered some commonly asked questions about the program. Why do people call you the “HCG Guru”? Seven years ago, I lost 25 lbs. on the diet and it changed my life. For the past six years, I have helped thousands of people achieve their weight loss goals with this program. The best part of my job is seeing people change before my eyes and watching them get their confidence back. Geri Kelleher, Owner and How does Slender Program Director Fit U differ from similar programs? My clients tell me that the difference is the way we treat people. We stay involved with all of our clients; they are not just a number. If they miss an appointment, we call them. We make sure that every client gets the proper guidance and support throughout the program and achieves their weight loss goals. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest dosage for weight loss. We also give injectable prescription B12. How much can clients expect to lose? Clients can choose a 23-day program or a 46-day program. Women typically lose 15 lbs. in the 23-day program

and up to 30 lbs. in the 46-day program. Men typically lose more - 20 to 25 lbs. in 23 days and 40 to 50 lbs. in 46 days. What is HCG? HCG (Human Chronic Gonadotropin) is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists in men and women. During pregnancy, it is produced in very high levels and almost completely controls the metabolic function. In non-pregnant individuals, research suggests HCG similarly increases the metabolism. Does the HCG have side effects? There are no side effects reported while using HCG for weight loss. The amount of HCG used in the diet protocol is a very tiny dose. Because it is a natural substance, this program is completely safe. What makes the diet so effective? Unlike other “diets,” this program reshapes and re-sculpts the body by releasing abnormal fat deposits. Every pound you lose is a pound of FAT, which is very different from losing a pound of weight. You are not losing muscle mass, or water. You also lose multiple inches and dress sizes and your shape changes. Do clients keep the weight off? Ninety percent of Slender Fit U clients keep the weight off. After completing the program successfully, they support and rebalance their metabolisms. In addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat, they modify their relationship with food and eating, resulting in easily maintained, long-term weight loss. Are clients medically supervised? Yes. Every patient has a comprehensive physical with the medical doctor before starting the program, as well as one-on-one counseling throughout the program. This is included in the price.

A

pril Claxton recently

lost 40 pounds in only six weeks at Slender Fit U. She was anxious to share her story to motivate others to do the same. Why did you decide to lose weight? I have always been chunky. When I turned 35, my body started responding differently and I gained a lot of weight. I had difficulty breathing, walking and sleeping. I always felt swollen and tired, and spent most of my time at home on the couch. I have tried every diet out there. I was contemplating surgery, but decided April Claxton lost 40 lbs. in six weeks. to try Slender Fit U first. What were your results? I am 5’6. I started the program at 296 lbs. and lost 40 of them in only six weeks. I am excited to lose the rest. How do you feel now? In only six weeks, I am like a different person. I am now exercising and have gotten rid of several medications, including one for high blood pressure. I feel empowered, more confident and very sexy. People are looking at me instead of past me. I feel pretty and alive! Why were you more successful with Slender Fit U than other diets? I never had a real coach who supported me throughout the process. Geri answered all of my questions and helped me stay on track. She wanted me to succeed as much as I did. In addition, I saw instant results, with a 10 lb. loss in only ten days. When I saw how well my body responded, I knew I had found the right program.

Does the diet involve exercise? Exercise is not required and does not improve your end result. It is a scientific program and it is the combination of the HCG and the low calorie diet that produces the weight/fat loss. However, exercise is allowed.

Can you purchase HCG over the counter? No. Real HCG cannot be purchased over the counter. The HCG comes in both an injectable and an oral form from the pharmacy. Consultations are free and by appointment. For information and to see more before and after photos, visit www.SlenderFitU.com or call 954-423-1376.

Is the diet easy? To quote one of my clients, “Besides being the most effective diet I have ever gone on, this was the easiest diet I have ever been on. Almost every morning when I got on the scale, my weight would be down. No long workouts, no agonizing hunger pains. That’s how great this diet is.” What foods are on the diet? There are no packaged meals. You are eating real food from the grocery store that includes protein, fruit and vegetables. This makes it an easy transition onto stabilization, as well as regular eating and regular life.

Lost 30 lbs. in six weeks.

April 2014 | davie town times

Are patients hungry on the diet? Eighty percent of people experience no hunger on the Slender Fit U program. They even find very tiny servings to be completely satisfying. HCG dieters usually feel as though they are stuffing themselves in order to reach that 800 calorie limit!
