Happy Valentine’s Day!
W
ow, time surely flies! New Year’s celebrations are already a month in the past and 2016 is in full swing. While our neighbors in the Northern states are scraping ice from the windows of their cars and shoveling the snow in their driveway, we enjoy the warmth of the Sunshine State. The kids are busy with school and afterschool activities, parents are busy at work, and we are all dreaming about summer vacations. This is also the time of year when we make plans for a special evening with our Valentine. While we contemplate which gift we should purchase for them or which restaurant we shall visit, we need to remember that the monetary value of a gift is a secondary notion. The most important point is that it is a gift that comes from the heart -- and there is no better gift then spending valuable time with the ones we love. This February, give from your heart and enjoy each other’s company. Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! Sincerely,

7th Annual Tour de Broward to Benefit Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital By Beverly Perkins
M
any know about the annual internationally acclaimed bicycle race, Le Tour de France, which has occurred each July for the over the past century in the world’s top tourist destination. South Florida may not have that many years or miles under its belt, but the “7th annual ANF Group Tour de Broward” will take place at Miramar Regional Park on February 28th. Thousands are expected to come out and exercise in an effort to help children and families at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Tour de Broward offers something for every age, physical ability and level of fitness. This 50 and 100K bicycle ride, 5K timed run and 3K walk is a community fundraiser sponsored by the ANF Group. There will also be the sports-themed “Power of Play Kid Zone” which will provide healthy, fun activities for children ages 13 and younger. Registration fees range from $10-$40 depending
upon the event one signs up for and the sign-up date. Last year the event raised $440,870 which positively impacted the thousands of children who required outpatient visits, surgery and other medical services at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. This year’s funds will be designated for the expansion of the pediatric programs and services. So far, in its six-year history, the Tour de Broward has raised more than $2 million to aid the growth of the Hollywood-based hospital. Johnny Pastorius is a living, breathing, case study of the impact Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital has for those in the community. The 11-year-old from Pompano Beach completes the 5K run each year, despite being less than three years removed from surgery that patched a hole in his heart. Pastorius ran the Tour de Broward shirtless last
year, with “6-4-2012, Open Heart Surgery, JDCH” written on his chest. “We thought if it might inspire one person or family, then it was worth doing,” said John Pastorius IV, Johnny’s father. “My son’s not shy about taking off his shirt and we figured that people going through what he did should see that you can get back a normal life with the right care.” Miramar Regional Park is located at 16801 Miramar Parkway in southwest Broward. The 100K ride starts at 7:00 a.m., run at 8:00 am and walk at 9:00 a.m. Registration is available in advance or on event day. For those unable to participate on the day of the event, a virtual participation donation can be made online at tourdebroward.com. To learn more about Tour de Broward sponsorship opportunities, call (954) 2657241 or visit www.tourdebroward.com.

KISS 99.9 FM Cares For Kids By Beverly Perkins

T
he Kiss 99.9 Cares for Kids Radiothon recently had their end-of-year event to raise money for the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. So far, in its 12-year history, the ‘Radiothon’ annual efforts have generated more than $2.75 million. The live broadcast and pledge drive benefits the pediatric patients, programs and services at the nonprofit leading children’s hospital in Broward and Palm Beach counties. The popular country station asked all of their fans and all of South Florida to tune-in and open their hearts for the 12th annual ‘Radiothon’. They encouraged listeners to step up to the plate to donate. Each year their goal is to hit it out of the ballpark by surpassing the previous year’s donations. Fortunately, they achieved a home run again raising nearly $260,000. The eagerly anticipated fundraiser featured 12-hour
radio broadcasts for two consecutive days and included live musical performances in the hospital lobby. The event also interviewed patients and families at the hospital who have been impacted by serious illnesses. Listeners were able to gain more insight and knowledge through this personal approach since they were able to hear directly from those affected. Teenager Jenny Spell was one of these patients that shared her story. At such a young age she had cardiac failure due to a virus that attacked her heart. She spent 241 days as a JDCH patient and discussed the outstanding care and support her and her family received. Donations are crucial to help patients and their families such as hers. grams and equipment for their patients. Since 1994, the Foundation has provided philanthropic-based support that supplements the income from payments and tax revenues received by the Memorial Healthcare System. All charitable contributions made through the Foundation serve their mission to heal the body, mind and spirit of those it touches. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is the largest regional children’s hospital serving all of Broward, Palm Beach, and northern MiamiDade Counties. JDCH is located at 1005 N. 35th Avenue, Hollywood. He has been saddling winners for 20 years now and will most likely be a first-year inductee into the Hall of Fame during his first year of eligibility in 2021. In order to be inducted into racing’s Hall of Fame, one must train for 25 years. Bill Hirsch, owner of Hirsch Thoroughbred Management, LLC and a descendant in a line of Hall of Fame trainers has known Pletcher for 25 years. They first met when Pletcher was an assistant trainer to Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas in New York at Belmont Park Racetrack. He has watched Todd’s career flourish as he’s become the perennial leading trainer in the country for the past 10 years. “He is so professional; a hands-on horseman and a real humble and classy guy. His attention to every detail among his vast racing stables is amazing,” says Hirsch. “He has multiple divisions of thoroughbreds competing all over the east coast and in Kentucky. On top of all that, he has a connection to his horses as evidenced by his results. I am honored to know him”.

West Hollywood Elementary Students Received a Special Holiday Surprise
SECTION News School HEAD
By Beverly Perkins
T
he holiday season may be past, but the students at West Hollywood Elementary won’t forget their “Secret Santa”. These Wildcats were gifted with toys, treats and a visit from Santa all because of the generosity of Dollar General Stores and the Broward Education Foundation. This joint effort created smiles for students and families at Title 1 schools across Broward County during the most wonderful time of year. Dollar General collected canned goods and toys in their nineteen locations throughout the county. The goal was to give each deserving child a toy basket and supply the Broward County Public Schools food pantry in the Health Services Department at the Lauderdale Manors Complex. Title 1 schools have large concentrations of low-income students and receive supplemental funds to assist in meeting student’s educational goals. These low-income students are determined by the number of students enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program. If 50% of students at a school are enrolled in the program the entire school qualifies for Title 1 funds. The unique holiday initiative was part of the innovative “Tools for Schools” program. This program empowers teachers from 200 Broward County public and charter Title 1 schools to select and pick up donated school supplies at no charge from the Tools for Schools warehouse to help meet the needs of their students. This type of support is crucial to advance Pre K-12th grade achievement. Besides providing educational supplies, scholarships are given to qualifying high school seniors. The nonprofit Broward Education Foundation (BEF) has been providing support for over three decades to Title 1 schools. Each year they contribute more than $2 million to Broward County schools. For more information visit www.browardedfoundation.org.

Hollywood Hills High Student Scores Big at Hollywood Park Elementary By Beverly Perkins
A
lejandro Osorio, a senior at Hollywood Hills High School, has chosen to volunteer at Hollywood Park Elementary. However, he doesn’t work in a typical mainstream classroom. He met Ms. Eileen Santiago and her class 2 years ago and since hasn’t left to go elsewhere. When asked why he volunteers in a special needs class, Osorio says, “When you look at those innocent and happy students, you can still believe there is no harm in the world.” Santiago’s students are 8-10 year old boys and girls with varying Intellectual Disabilities such as language, visual and physical impairments as well as Down syndrome and Angelman syndrome. Hollywood Park Elementary has six cluster classrooms that service students with Intellectual Disabilities (InD) from grades K-5. The AP and Honor student has enjoyed helping Santiago set up her classroom during the summer when most teenagers are busy hanging out with their friends. He likes to ensure that the students are in a comfortable, learning-based environment. He also assists her in planning hands-on activities which are fun and educational. During the 2014-2015 school year he even participated with the eager class at Hollywood’s 5th Annual Funtastic Friday Goes Green. “Alejandro is a true example of a hard worker who shares his talent and enjoys giving back. The students really enjoy having volunteers that make great projects come to life,” says Santiago. “Volunteers that visit my classroom are angels in disguise. It’s a pleasure working with such a wonderful young man and see how he impacts the life of my students.” Osorio always manages to find the time to surprise the children and be extra hands to help Santiago despite his own academic load and athletic schedule. At the age of 3, Osorio began playing recreational soccer and never stopped. His natural ability and his passion landed him a spot on a traveling team at age 7. The top athlete played for Driftwood Middle and now plays for Hollywood Hills High. He was awarded for being the player who scored the most goals during his Freshman and Junior years. In November of 2015, he was invited to participate in an international soccer tour in Santiago, Chile. This gave him the opportunity to play exhibition games with players from all over the world. Osorio plans on attending college to study sociology, but his big dream is to play soccer professionally.

Broward Students Meet Holocaust Survivors at Student Awareness Day
School News
By Beverly Perkins
I
n light of the skyrocketing hate crimes, the 33rd annual Student Awareness Day couldn’t be more appropriate. More than 1,000 Broward County high school students met at the Broward Convention Center before winter break to attend the annual event hosted by Hollywood’s Holocaust Documentation and Education Center (HDEC). Hasten shares his story Each year the event’s purpose is to connect students with survivors of hate crimes. Consequently, students learn about the dangers of racism directly from the source. Featured speakers at the 2015 Student Awareness Day included Holocaust survivors, Broward Public Defender Howard Finkelstein and Angela King, a former skinhead from Broward County. Through engagement with the survivors, round-table discussions, lectures and video presentations, students were exposed to what prejudice and bigotry do first-hand. Students were divided into groups, and then each group was paired with a Holocaust survivor. The survivors shared their extremely personal and sensitive stories about their experience with hate, tragedy and survival. Students were also encouraged to share their own stories of facing prejudice and intolerance. “The importance of this event is unparalleled,” Holocaust Survivor Mark Hasten
explains HDEC President Rositta Kenigsberg. “It makes a tremendous impact to have Holocaust Survivors spend an entire day face to face with high school students, sharing their stories for the reason that they don’t want their past to become the students’ future. Survivor Isadore Petersile Photos credit: Howie Sonnenschein Survivors want us to teach the Holocaust, not repeat it, because they have witnessed what prejudice, hatred and bigotry can do. We all know that the number of hate groups and hate crimes and the rash of bullying and cyber-bullying are at an all-time high.” According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, hate crimes have jumped 813 percent in recent years. This number is climbing in the wake of recent events such as the San Bernardino shooting and the attacks in Paris. “We at the HDEC are making every effort to teach our students that promises of ‘Never Again’ are empty and meaningless if one remains silent and indifferent in the face of adversity,” continued Kenigsberg.

The HDEC hosts Student Awareness Day annually in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. The Center also provides teacher training and other educational resources to combat racism. For more information call 954-929-5690 or visit www.hdec.org or 2031 Harrison Street, Hollywood.

Oh, The Places He’ll Go – Hollywood Teen is On His Way to Big Things
Can do Kid
By Beverly Perkins
H
ollywood resident and senior at American Heritage School, Alex Baikovitz isn’t the typical teenager who goes to school, does homework and hangs out with friends. He has bigger plans on his agenda. This super student plans on studying mechanical engineering with a focus on business and entrepreneurism. He ultimately wants to create high-tech start-ups in the aerospace engineering and robotics industry. He already accomplished launching a parking app for smart phones with a team at MIT. When he’s not trying to improve parking problems, he spends most of his time volunteering and being a part of the community. He has done various projects such as food drives, helping the blind, Relay for Life, tutoring and so much more. His outstanding commitment to his community landed him an eight-week paid
internship provided by Bank of America last summer. The Bank of America Charitable Foundation selects only five exceptional high school juniors and seniors for this coveted position in the Bank of America Student Leaders Program at the YMCA of Broward County. The choices are based on the students’ commitment to serving the community and making Broward a better place to live. These select individuals from Broward County had the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. to join more than 200 other Bank of America Student Leaders from around the country for a week-long leadership summit. They were able to participate in skill-building workshops, a service learning project, sessions to develop better money spending habits and meet with Members of Congress during their summer term.
“I had the privilege of getting to know Alex through his participation in our Bank of America Student Leaders program. Bank of America has a commitment to fostering the next generation of leaders, and that begins with recognizing exceptional students like Alex. He has already made a mark on his community by feeding the hungry, serving the visually impaired and tutoring youth in Broward County,” said Sandra Juliachs, Fort Lauderdale market manager for Bank of America. Alex was also recently nominated as a Silver Knight in Business for the 2015-2016 school year. The Miami Herald Silver Knight Awards is one of the nation’s most highly regarded student awards program. Those nominated are recognized for not only being outstanding students who maintain a minimum 3.2 GPA, but who make outstanding efforts contributing to their schools and their communities. Since 2004, the program has supported 2,200 young people nationwide. To learn more about Bank of America’s Corporate Social Responsibility programs and practices, please visit www.bankofamerica.com/about and follow the company on Twitter @BofA_Netws and @BofA_Community.

here are certain signs and symptoms that indicate a vein problem that is more than just cosmetic. The development of varicose veins is often the first sign of venous insufficiency, and this can progress to more serious consequences of chronic venous insufficiency including swelling, skin changes and ulceration. Many people do not know, however, that congestive heart failure and varicose veins are often mistaken for one another. While vein symptoms often manifest themselves cosmetically, they can be and often are part of a greater circulatory problem. Vein disease is a progressive disease, so symptoms will worsen if left untreated and will require more extensive treatment in the future. Left untreated, varicose veins will increase in size and number. Symptoms may worsen and can lead to leg swelling, chronic skin changes such as dermatitis and discoloration – and in severe cases, non-healing ulcerations. These problems make it difficult to sit or stand for long periods of time, which in turn may affect a person’s activity level and quality of life. Varicose veins may also indicate a critical blockage in deeper veins, a condition called deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, that can be life threatening. Consequently, proper medical evaluation and treatment of varicose veins is important. Those most at risk for developing varicose veins and related issues are women. They are more likely to suffer from varicose veins than men, though men make up about 20 percent of our patients. Varicose veins may develop during pregnancy or as the result of hormonal changes during menopause. Family history can put you at higher risk, and those suffering from obesity are more likely to have varicose veins. It is estimated that up to 40 percent of the world’s population suffers from varicose veins in various forms. Dr. Soffer is recognized as one of the leading vein experts in the United States and trains physicians from around the world on advanced vein treatment techniques. Soffer Health has offices in Aventura, Pembroke Pines, Doral, Hialeah/Miami Lakes, North Miami, Deerfield Beach. Ask the expert
A
s a person ages, there is a loss of collagen and elastin in the skin, alteration in the skeletal framework, and a progressive loss, or atrophy, of facial fat. These alterations in skin, fat, and bone result in distinctive changes in facial appearance. Increased skin laxity, prominence of the nasolabial folds and jowls, increased depth and number of facial wrinkles, characterize the aging face. A youthful face is fuller, more angular, with high cheekbones, a distinctive jawline, and smooth skin. In order to achieve the optimal result in facial rejuvenation, it is necessary to address all the underlying elements that affect the appearance of the face. There are four areas to treat – skin surface, laxity or excess skin, soft tissue support structure, and biochemical composition within the skin. The first is the skin surface – fine lines, wrinkles, pore size, and skin texture. This area is rejuvenated through typical skin treatments, such as fractional laser therapy, chemical peels and microdermabrasion and Botox® and Dysport®, as well as topical creams, such as Retin A, glycolic based products, and moisturizers that contain Hyaluronic acid. These products help diminish fine facial wrinkles and improve pigmentation. The second area to address is skin looseness or laxity, as well as skin excess. When redundant skin creates deep folds and jowls, the excess skin should be removed. There are multiple face-lifting techniques. The specific procedure should be adapted to the individual patient’s anatomy through a mini face lift or full facelift, or modification of these procedures such as an “S” lift or lifestyle lift. Thirdly, the soft tissue structure that supports the skin may need to be enhanced. Fat grafting adds volume that is lost as a result of atrophy of facial fat and descent of supporting soft tissue. During the early stages of facial aging, soft tissue fillers, such as Juvederm®, Restylane®, and Radiesse® can accomplish this as well. Finally, an area that most surgeons and patients neglect is the skin, the organ. The biochemical makeup of the skin is affected by what we eat and put into our bodies. Omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants aid in restoring a healthy appearance to the skin. Consuming foods high in essential fatty acids, vitamins A, C, D, and E and antioxidants make the skin appear more youthful. Avoiding sun exposure and not smoking also improves skin appearance. To summarize, as we age, the alterations that take place resulting in an aging appearance are multifactorial. Because of this, treatment options must also address all these components – the skin surface, skin excess, structural support, and the skin composition.

PET OF THE MONTH
Gibby is a one-yearold male African pigmy hedgehog. He is especially close to his human mommy and loves to go shopping with her on the weekends. When he’s not shopping, he loves to go in and out of a tube in his cage. However, he is not the kind of hog to exercise. He hates hamster balls and wheels, he prefers to sleep in them. Gibby was last seen helping wrap Christmas presents.
