Spring Is Just Around The Corner

T

he arrival of the spring season is welcomed as a sign of renewal and progress all around the world. While we watched news reports of snow and ice storms ravaging our neighbors in the Northern states, we are fortunate that our Florida winter season did not bring any significant cold-weather periods. Now, as the temperatures start to climb, the ocean is slowly warming up and the beaches are calling our names again. We remember why Florida is the place we choose to live. With Spring Break approaching, why not spend some time enjoying the splendors of our Sunshine State. This March 2016 issue also marks the inaugural issue of our newest publication, Our City Aventura. It reaches 20,000+ affluent homes and businesses in Aventura, Golden Beach and Sunny Isles Beach. Welcome to our family! We hope all of our readers enjoy learning about what’s happening in your community and schools, and provide us with story leads on what makes our life in Florida so enjoyable. On this happy note, let’s enjoy all that Florida has to offer and let’s have some fun.

Everyone Loves A Party So Why Not Have One with a Purpose? community news

By Beverly Perkins

M

any years ago, the Hollywood Gazette started a wonderful organization called Party with a Purpose. This monthly networking and fundraising group’s goal was to gather local residents together while supporting various charities. It had a lengthy time span with monthly events at Dave and Busters and later at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Unfortunately, it fell apart about a couple years ago due to various factors. However, Luis Guevara, Maribel Ruiz and Marty Jacobsen decided to revive the philanthropic group shortly after with a new name and a new mission. The three humanitarians wanted to get local charityminded business owners involved with a focus on promoting Hollywood’s downtown area. At the same time, they also wanted to encourage professionals to network while raising funds for those in need. This goal creates a win-win-win environment as local businesses get necessary exposure, charities receive donations and individuals have an opportunity to get to know each other. The trio then went on to form a committee with those who also wanted to give back to the community. Some of Hollywood’s well-known business owners such as, Joe Bevelacqua with Cobra Joe Productions, Angelica Love Valentine with I Love Coaching, and local realtor, Jonathan Lorber became crucial members of the organization. The dynamic group raised over $30,000 for local charities in 2015 and hopes to

raise $40,000 this year. Downtown Hollywood’s Party with a Purpose meets on the third Wednesday of each month. They rotate between popular bars and restaurants in downtown Hollywood such as The Greek Joint, Mickey Byrnes Irish Pub, La Vendetta, Whiskey Tango, FACE, Lola’s on Harrison, La Hauca, Rudy’s Pub and Bistro 1902. Every month focuses on a different local charity and sometimes more depending on the size of that month’s venue. The venues donate the food and have happy hour pricing on drinks. 100% of all funds raised go directly to the charity. Some of last year charities and not-for-profit organizations that benefitted from Downtown Hollywood’s Party with a Purpose were the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, Exceptional Theater Company, K Sail, Hollywood Women’s Club, Hollywood Scholarship Foundation, Friends of Broward Homeless, Hollywood Jaycees and Liberia Economic and Social Development (LES). It’s not uncommon that each event brings in $1,000-$1,500 monthly. “I was raised to give back to the community and try to make it a better place to live, work and play,” says Marty Jacobsen. “We normally get 40-60 people to attend the events and are working to increase the turnout by doubling up and when we have more than one charity we end up raising 2 or 3 times as much and expose more people to our wonderful local charities.”

The Downtown Hollywood’s Party with a Purpose committee is looking to expand the number of charities to participate as they are also always seeking more members. For those who would like to get involved, ‘like’ them on Facebook at www. facebook.com/hollywoodpwp , join the mailing list located on the page or call Marty Jacobsen at 954-433-9194.

“SHOW” Your Support for the South Florida SPCA at “A Day at The Races” By Beverly Perkins

F

or more than two decades the South Florida SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has rescued over 2,000 horses and other livestock animals. The organization has always been available 24 hours a day to respond to any calls requesting the removal of large stray animals that may pose a threat to themselves or the community. They are the only organization in South Florida that is capable to take these beautiful creatures back to a safe environment. The SFSPCA has never turned away a horse in need. Their mission is to: ▸▸ Rescue, provide medical treatment, shelter and care for horses and domestic farm animals. ▸▸ Rehabilitate the animals and place them in permanent foster homes. ▸▸ Promote the welfare and well-being of animals through education. ▸▸ Educate the public on responsible animal care and the value of every life. Florida ranks number 3 in the nation with an equine population of over 500,000. Unfortunately many of these horses become neglected, abused, abandoned and even slaughtered. In order to continue to be the best at what they do, the independent, non-profit 501( c ) 3 organization is thrilled to announce its annual fundraiser, “A Day at The Races” at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale on Saturday, March 5th. Daniela Diego of Univision 23 will be the emcee as guests enjoy a lavish buffet, a silent auction and spectacular view of the races in the air conditioned comfort

of Gulfstream’s signature restaurant Ten Palms. Last year over 450 guests attended the exciting afternoon of horse racing and fundraising. Proceeds from ticket sales, sponsorships, silent auction and raffles benefit South Florida SPCA Horse Rescue, and a portion of the proceeds from race sponsorships will be donated to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF). Laurie Waggoner, SFSPCA founder and director of ranch operations said of the event and its location at Gulfstream, “We’re extremely excited about having ‘A Day at the Races’ at Gulfstream Park again this year. Obviously the venue is gorgeous, but most importantly, Gulfstream Park and its owner, The Stronach Group, have implemented the strictest standards for humane treatment of Thoroughbreds both during their racing careers and in retirement through the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) and Florida Thoroughbred Retirement and Adoptive Care (TRAC) programs. By working together, we better the lives of many horses.” Registration begins at 11:00am and the first race is scheduled at 12:05pm. Individual tickets are $75 and available in advance online. Various levels of sponsorship remain available or you can name a race and watch your race from the winners circle. For more information visit www.helpthehorses.org or call Nancy Piacentino at 954-816-2883.

Tour Hollywood’s Historic Hammerstein House Community News

By Beverly Perkins

T

he Hammerstein House, also known as the Rust House, is located at 1520 Polk Street in Hollywood. In 2005, the historic residence was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. On the first Sunday of each month through April, interested individuals can take a free tour of the property, learn the importance behind it and see significant treasures. The complimentary tours are given by members of the Hollywood Historical Society. The celebrated home serves as their headquarters. These members are dedicated to preserving the past for future generations. Inside the home, visitors have the opportunity to view the family’s personal items from the 19th and 20th centuries such as Vera Hammerstein’s vintage wedding dress and Clarence’s World War I memorabilia. The prominent couple were active participants in Hollywood’s war effort. They traveled the world together seeking exotic plants. Clarence created a special study of the culture of mangos and Vera headed a group of women volunteers who canned local produce. In 1927, both were a crucial component in developing citrus groves with the Wrays and Frank Stirling. Today the original grove operates as Flamingo Gardens. The Hammerstein House was designed by Bayard Lukens, a prominent Hollywood architect, in 1935 for Vera and Clarence Hammerstein. The home is an example of what Lukens called “Tropical Modern” with its’ variegated tile roof, smooth curving entrance wall, beautifully detailed interior and decorative Cuban and Spanish tiles. In 1987, at the age of ninety-two the World War I pilot left this house to the City of Hollywood in memory of his beloved wife Vera, who had predeceased him as the couple had no children. As part of the tour, visitors also get to view The Historical Society’s research center which is located at the rear of the home, and hear about the City’s inception of it. The center houses archives of Hollywood’s rich history. The vast collection includes over 20,000 items including bound volumes of the Hollywood Sun-Tattler newspaper, photos, maps and pamphlets. Those interested can purchase unique and memorable books, postcards, photographs, maps and posters.

Karen Albertson, President of the Hollywood Historical Society, says, “I love giving the guided tours of the home, which I think is so beautiful, and it is so much fun telling the general public about the historic items in the home. It is just a real ‘blast from the past’.” This month’s tour is March 6th and the following, April 3rd with the last on May 8th between 1:00-4:00pm. However, the center is open to the public every Friday from 10:00am-11:30am. For additional information and to help the historic community, please contact 954-923-5590. Calling All Artists and Creatives - Downtown Hollywood Needs Your Input Community news

By Beverly Perkins

T

he Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) along with Artspace Projects and the City of Hollywood are in the process of conducting a major online survey to determine the market for a local Artspace. All artists, creatives, arts organizations and creative businesses in South Florida are encouraged to contribute their thoughts. The input received will decide the size and nature of the affordable live/work/create project planned for Downtown Hollywood. The eight-week survey period will continue through March 28th, 2016. The national, nonprofit organization wants to know the space needs and preferences of local artists and creatives of all disciplines in Hollywood. In order to be a successful project, the information they receive is crucial as it will help identify the types and number of spaces, sizes, design features, affordability, amenities and special features that are of interest to them. The survey is the second phase of a scope of work that began last year when an Artspace team conducted a preliminary feasibility visit in Downtown Hollywood. They will also impact specific design and programmatic decisions, such as square footage, parking spaces, types of shared creative spaces required, rents, etc. Artspace, the nation’s leading developer for the arts, will then take the results of the survey and determine the size of the market for the affordable live/work housing, studio and work space of various kinds for Downtown Hollywood. Artists who

take the survey will be among the first to be informed of project developments, including leasing opportunities. Headquartered in Minneapolis, but with offices scattered across the country, Artspace runs a network of more than 35 cost-effective art facilities in 15 states. This artist-led community transformation organization represents a $582 million investment in America’s arts infrastructure by providing more than 1,300 affordable live/work units for artists and their families as well as a million square feet of non-residential space for artists, arts organizations and creative enterprises. The 15 minute survey is best viewed on a computer, laptop or other device with a large screen. Those interested can log onto HollywoodArtspaceSurvey.org to complete the survey. Partners in the project include: The Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency, Artspace Projects, The City of Hollywood, Cinema Paradiso, Gallery 2014, and the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood. Additional information about the survey is available at HollywoodArtspaceSurvey.org. For more information on businesses or events in Hollywood’s Downtown and Beach districts, contact the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) at 954-924-2980 or visit www.hollywoodcra.org.To learn more about Artspace, please visit www.artspace.org.

Remembering “Doc Hollywood” By Beverly Perkins

D

r. Henry D. Perry Jr., a popular OB/GYN, was also known as “Doc Hollywood”. His dedication to his patients and their new families in his Hollywood practice among his numerous affiliations to many local community organizations are what gave him the affectionate alias. The Miami native delivered thousands of babies during his significant career of 33 years. He practiced obstetrics in Hollywood for almost 2 decades and often joked, “I’ve delivered the babies of the babies I delivered.” Not only was he busy bringing life into the world, Perry Jr. was a founding governing board member for Memorial Foundation and a prominent donor to both

the Memorial and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundations. His family continues to carry on his legacy by maintaining his commitment. The Memorial and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundations raise funds philanthropically to assist patients, families, and to underwrite the cost of programs, facilities, and equipment within the Memorial Healthcare System. The Perry family name currently graces two schools, an airport and a park. Most recently, Perry Jr.’s name will live on at one of the places the good doctor felt most at home. The Family Birthplace at Memorial Regional Hospital has honored “Doc Hollywood” for his long

career in the city with the dedication of the “Dr. Henry D. Perry, Jr. Family Birthplace at Memorial Regional Hospital”. Just two years after his passing, this lasting tribute to Henry D. Perry Jr. was presented in a ceremony attended by four generations of the doctor’s family, friends, physicians, nurses, administrators and staff of the Memorial Healthcare System. “Dr. Perry was a kind and generous man and one of the most admired obstetric physicians this community has known,” said Memorial Healthcare System CEO Frank V. Sacco. “He was also one of my mentors and a very good friend to Memorial Healthcare System.”

Hallandale High School Teenagers Wanted for Summer Job

school news

By Beverly Perkins

T

here’s no better way to be a part of the community than to be working in it. The City of Hallandale Beach is looking for dedicated teenagers to join their environmental summer jobs program. Hallandale Beach teenagers ages 16 and 17 are needed for this paid 22-week, part-time experience. Those interested must be a Hallandale Beach resident and current high school student or recent graduate. Students selected will be reviewed and hired in time for orientation which begins during spring break, March 21st through March 25th. The Youth Employment Program includes environmental awareness training, beach clean-up and community outreach. Only those dedicated to working the full 22 weeks need to apply. The program consists of the 25-hour paid orientation, 10 hours per week during the school year and 25 hours per week during the summer break. For many, this is the perfect first job. Students are exposed to many components of working for the city while learning how to be green and maintaining a beautiful environment. They also have the opportunity to make new friends, experience a real-work ethic and get a paycheck all while hanging out on the beach most of the time. This type of position is an asset for the college resume as well. Last year every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday were dedicated to beach clean-up. Wednesday was an education day where team members learned about environmental impact. These days included field trips to recycling operations and Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center among others. Fridays were planned around community outreach. The 2015 Green Team consisted of nine Hallandale Beach teens who worked hard to keep South City Beach clean. They picked up after careless residents and visitors who left debris on the beach. They collected bottle caps, cigarette butts, food wrappers and even toys. Reusing some of these discarded items, some students even created artwork with their findings.

Every great team needs great leaders and last years’ were Holly Desmarais, an environmental teacher and Will Martinez. Both are teachers in the Broward County School District. The 2016 team will be managed again by committed educators. Youth Employment Applications are being accepted online at www.hallandalebeachfl.gov/jobs.

Meet Hollywood Park’s New Principal – Mrs. Menendez By Beverly Perkins

H

School News

ollywood Park Elementary School recently received a new Principal to their school. Although new to the school, this new lead Panther is no stranger to Broward County Public Schools. Mrs. MariaElena Menendez started her career 13 years ago as a classroom teacher where she taught kindergarten and the first and second grades. She then went on to take on the role of Reading Coach and finally went on to serve as an Assistant Principal for six years at Stirling Elementary School, also in Hollywood. The Florida native, born in Hialeah, attended Dade County Public Schools from kindergarten through twelfth grade. After graduation she furthered her education by attending Barry University. This is where she received both her Bachelor of Science degree in Pre-K/Primary Education and her Master of Science degree in Reading. Additionally, she received certification in Educational Leadership from St. Thomas University. Although she takes pride in her career accomplishments, she is most proud of her title of “Mother”. She has two daughters, the youngest is two years old and the oldest is seven. The first grader is a student at Hollywood Park Elementary. The youngest

anticipates her debut at the school in a few short years. “As working parents of small children, my husband and I completely understand the challenges that come with balancing a busy schedule,” says Menendez. “That being said, I do believe the role we play as parents in the home-school connection is vital. I encourage parents to take an active role in their child’s education by reading with them nightly, reviewing his/her assignments and communicating with their teacher on a regular basis.” Hollywood Park Elementary School has a talented and dedicated faculty and staff and welcomes the new voice of Mrs. Menendez. She intends on working hard to build strong relationships with parents, students and community partners while focusing on fostering a nurturing environment for children. Furthermore, she wants to plan engaging and exciting instruction that meets the needs of all diverse learners. Menendez has an open door policy and welcomes suggestions, ideas and input as she expects a most successful rest of the year. Mrs. Menendez can be reached at (754)323-6250. Hollywood Park Elementary is located at 901 N. 69th Way, Hollywood.

Driftwood Middle School Gets Down Low for This Year’s NBA Challenge By Beverly Perkins

I

n 2008, Driftwood Middle School’s “Green Team” was born. This environmental group of students was lead, and still, is by their Physical Education and Wellness teacher, Linda Gancitano. This amazing educator was the innovator in the creation of the club. She single-handedly gathered a team of teachers and students to collect environmental data to earn national sustainability awards. Gancitano then initiated a district-wide energy reduction project called “How Low Can You Go? Energy Challenge” to reduce energy consumption. The project’s purpose is to raise awareness and change behaviors in an environment to support the rising concern of climate change. Students actively engaged in the school-based challenge by being energy auditors for their classrooms. Because the project was such a success, the “Green Team” decided to not only educate their students and faculty, but to inspire the community and the school district. For the third consecutive year, the Miami Heat has challenged Broward, Dade and Palm Beach County Public Schools to find innovative ways to reduce energy consumption at each campus. Through Driftwood’s greening initiative, “How Low Can You Go? Challenge”, the NBA team is enticing the schools to raise environmental awareness of CO2 emissions and to educate the facilities about potential financial savings through

22

responsible energy consumption. This year 187 schools will be participating in the challenge leading up to the “NBA Green Week”. “NBA Green Week 2016” takes place from March 22nd through April 7. They will hand leverage the combined weight of the league, teams, players and partners to generate awareness and raise funds in support of environmental protection. There will be pep rallies, banners and all kinds of exciting motivational activities taking place within all the competing schools. The Miami Heat will reward the winning school with on-court recognition during one of the Heat games. Honorable mentions will be given during the game to second and third place schools as well. Another highlight added to the challenge this year is that School Board members Nora Rupert, Heather Brinkworth, Robin Bartleman, Ann Murray, and Donna Korn will kiss a pig if a school in their district reduces the most energy. Over a four year period, Driftwood Middle School reduced their kilowatts by over 23%. However, last year out of the 82 Broward County Schools participating, 62 schools reduced their kilowatt consumption by a total of 1,501,957 kilowatt hours resulting in a $143,857.00 savings. Gancitano was recently named a White House Climate Education on Literacy “Champion of Change” for enhancing climate education at Driftwood Middle School Academy of Health and Wellness and throughout the Broward County Public School district.

he focus of anti-aging procedures often rests in rejuvenation of the face. A person’s hands are often neglected, and therefore remain a tell-tale sign of aging. The hands are continuously exposed to environmental elements. There are distinct signs of aging seen in one’s hand appearance. Characteristics that are treatable with minimally invasive procedures include visible tendons, the bony appearance, visible/prominent veins along with skin pigmentation changes and wrinkles. These changes occur as a result of progressive thinning of the skin overlying the back of the hand with increased skin laxity and loss of soft

tissue volume. Rejuvenation of aging hands involves two distinct factors. First is treatment of the overlying skin to remove age spots, pigmentation, and skin wrinkling or laxity. Second is restoration of lost volume through soft tissue volume enhancement. Ideal hand rejuvenation is achieved by replenishing your skin’s lost volume. The only FDA approved injectable filler for volume restoration in the hands is Radiesse. This process continues for several months after Radiesse is injected, extending the initial effect lasting more than a year to achieve long-lasting hand rejuvenation after a single treatment. By adding volume beneath the skin, Radiesse raises the skin level so that tendons, joints and veins lose their prominence. Radiesse is safe, effective and a non-surgical treatment which provides immediate smoothing of wrinkles, scars and replenishes soft tissue volume loss. Radiesse doesn’t require allergy testing. The procedure is done with topical anesthesia, with injections taking between ten and fifteen minutes. There may be minor swelling, redness or bruising at the site of the injection, which typically resolves within one or two days. The Radiesse hand lift is the latest procedure that utilizes microspheres of calcium hydoxyapatite to restore a more youthful appearance to the aging hands. Other procedures can be done in conjunction with Radiesse hand lifts, such as chemical peels and laser rejuvenation to reduce age spots and improve skin texture. Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Messa provided answers to some commonly asked questions about his practice at the Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center.

What can patients expect when they come to see you? My patients choose my practice because

they want exceptional results. I have extensive, specialized training and years of experience in the field of cosmetic plastic surgery. I am committed to every patient’s utmost satisfaction and I provide the highest quality of patient care to achieve each person’s individual appearance goals. I treat each patient as if he or she were going to be my first, only and last patient. My staff and I are dedicated to ensuring that each patient is treated with compassionate, attentive care that ensures their safety, well-being, and ultimate satisfaction with their results. We make sure that each patient feels special and unique.

What laser procedures do you offer? We

offer fractional laser resurfacing, eMatrix skin rejuvenation, vascular laser, and laser hair removal. These treatments are utilized to rejuvenate the skin to diminish fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and acne scars.

What types of non-surgical enhancements do you offer? We provide a variety of non-sur-

gical enhancements, including neurotoxins that are used for facial lines, like Botox and Dysport. We also offer soft tissue facial fillers, such as Juvederm, Perlane, Restylane, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Silk, Voluma and Radiesse, and fat grafting for correction of facial, body and breast contour deformities or depressions and buttock enhancement. We offer a comfortable and relaxed setting with advanced technology in cosmetic plastic surgery. While beauty and confidence is our ultimate goal, the patient’s safety is of the utmost importance to me and my staff. That’s why I perform all surgical procedures in an accredited hospital facility or in our state-ofthe-art, AAAASF certified surgical facility. The operating room is equipped with an advanced positive air flow system and hepa filter to ensure that the circulating air is always ideal for the sterile operating room environment. Do you offer any advanced techniques or equipment that others may not? I practice the

latest techniques in surgical and non-surgical procedures. I caution patients on trying “new techniques” until they have been approved by the FDA and have documented benefits in controlled medical research trials. Some so-

called ‘new techniques’ are not more advanced and therefore, not beneficial. They are only gimmicks that practitioners use to sell to patients. It is very important for my practice to promote treatments that I know will benefit the patient that are safe and effective.

What is your background? I have been in

practice for almost 20 years. I was trained at two outstanding universities--the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Massachusetts. The physicians I trained under were excellent teachers and highly skilled surgeons. I had very comprehensive training in all aspects of plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as general surgery, with extensive experience in cosmetic plastic surgery. I am certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the American Society of after Plastic Surgeons.

What do you enjoy about what you do?

The aspect of my job I enjoy the most is seeing the positive effect that my work as a surgeon and physician has on making people feel better both through enhancement of external appearance and through improved self-esteem and well-being.

Describe any community involvement? My

wife Rosalee and I have been Weston residents for almost 20 years. We support many local charities, especially those for needy women and children, such as Kids in Distress, Women in Distress and ChildNet. We are also members of the Weston Philharmonic Society, NSU Museum of Art, The Broward Center for the Performing Arts, active in the Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation, The Children’s Fund for Glycogen Storage Disease Research, The American Cancer Society, and other community charities.
