Spring is finally here!
T
his Florida ‘winter’ season certainly featured a variety of weather conditions. We had a number of cooler days and even colder nights followed by warm and wet weather. As we enter April, the temperatures are slowly creeping upwards and the A/C units are humming. Time to think about what to do during the approaching summer months. Many of us are busy planning where to go and what to do for summer vacation. Like my family, many have relatives and friends out-of-state or even in another country. Summer is always a fantastic time to go and visit, to reconnect, and to maintain a close bond with those we love. As South Floridians we love to visit different cities, climb mountains, and travel abroad. Summer time is also time for camp activities and summer school. We are blessed with a variety of different camps from which to choose, including language camps, sports camps, music camps, arts & craft camps, and much more. There are a multitude of different kids’ activities and camps advertised in this issue. In addition, keep an eye out for our annual Summer Camp Guide, which will be featured in our May issue. There is something for everybody. Whatever you decide to do this spring and summer, just don’t forget to take along a copy of the ‘Our City Magazine’ to send us your picture.

MyWish4U.org – Charity Inspires Hope through Happiness Community News
By Beverly Perkins
I
t was a great day for a special breakfast at Yum Berry Café & Sushi Bar in Hollywood’s Oakwood Plaza. More than 90 children, parents, medical staff and volunteers from MyWish4U.org arrived by bus to the kosher restaurant for a delicious celebratory meal. The group was treated to traditional breakfast foods as well as pizza, salads, malawach, bourekas and hot chocolate. The all-volunteer Sunrise-based organization was founded by Joseph Zevuloni, an avid activist in the battle of pediatric cancer. After losing his mother to cancer at a very early age Zevuloni wanted to make a difference and help children to battle cancer. His wish is to give hope, strength and happiness to children with life-threatening medical conditions and pediatric cancers. Thus, MyWish4U.org – Simcha Layeladim was born in 2009 with a primary focus on children from Israel. However, they welcome children of all races and religions from Miami to Canada and even Russia. Operated, managed and directed completely by non-paid humanitarians, MyWish4U.org is dedicated to improving the lives of chronically ill children. The non-profit organization offers these children and their families, financial aid, sponsors vacations, grants wishes and so much more. “The love we receive from the children is priceless,” explained Volunteer Yehuda Peretz. These kids
do not need much, just putting them on your shoulders is enough.” Each year there is an annual organized trip to South Florida which includes a four-day stay in Orlando and another four days in Miami. The Hollywood eatery’s chef, Ofer Aliali connected with the MyWish4U.org organization in Orlando and wanted to host these children as guests in the restaurant when they traveled down south. One of the highlights of the southern part of the trip is the “Ride to Revive” where the children have the opportunity to ride in a sports car with a professional driver around the Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale Beach. “This event exceeded our expectations and we hope Yum Berry will become a permanent stop on this annual trip,” said restaurant owner, Amos Vaknin. MyWish4U.org Founder, Joseph Zevuloni wants to send a clear message that happiness inspires hope, which in turn will encourage children to grow up and be whatever they want to be. For more information on mywish4u.org , please visit their website or contact volunteer Yehuda Peretz 443-880-0122 or Founder Joe Zevoluni 954-802-3188.

Painting the Town – A Massive Mural by the TM Sisters By Beverly Perkins
F
our and a half years ago, the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) launched the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project. This is the largest walkable mural project in Broward County. The project is the main component in the CRA’s arts-focuses initiative to enhance diversity and vibrancy in the Downtown area while showcasing the work of renowned local, national and international artists. These strategically placed murals create points of interest that attract visitors. Therefore, stimulating activity and improving the Downtown community and economy. So far there are 18 vibrant installations which can be seen throughout the streets of the Downtown Hollywood area; the latest being a huge undertaking by the talented TM Sisters. These artistic siblings, Monica and Tasha Lopez De Victoria, aka the TM Sisters, are multi-media performance artists with works of mixed media collage to site-specific interactive video performance as well as installations, fashion, social experiments and events. This is the first time the Miami natives will exhibit their work in Hollywood.

The duo painted a massive mural of a sunset on Downtown Hollywood’s Radius Garage, located at 251 N. 19th Avenue. They are one of four artists scheduled to install an exterior mural in the Downtown area this year. Described by the Miami New Times as “techno tropical,” their work is immersive and colorful and influenced by South Florida’s landscape — cultural presence, energy, weather and its colors. Voted “Miami’s Best Artist” by the Miami New Times in 2012, the TM Sisters have shown in exhibitions both locally and internationally, including the Serpentine Gallery in London, the Second Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art and Performa ’07 in New York. Their work has been featured in The New York Times, The Guardian, Vogue Italia, STEP Inside Design, L’official and on the cover of ARTNews for its 2007 “25 Trendsetters” feature article. “Street art is bringing creativity, aesthetic beauty, civic and ethnic identity, as well as neighborhood revitalization to Downtown Hollywood. We’re proud to have the TM Sisters be a part of that; after all, they do great work,” said Jill C. Weisberg, project manager/arts specialist for the Hollywood Florida CRA. “Taking something that is so non-descript as the Radius Garage and turning it into something people are going to be excited to see is talent. Monica and Tasha, along with the other artists who have been involved in the project, are beautifying the city in unexpected ways.” Mural tours are offered free to the public on the third Saturday of each month during Downtown Hollywood ArtWalk. Along the tour artists can be seen working on their installation. Private tours are also available.

rom teenagers to the elderly, Dr. Simon Weiss provides women with individualized healthcare for every stage of her life. He practices cutting edge medicine in a comfortable, relaxed, professional environment. He uses the latest medical protocols and technological advances available. Dr. Weiss routinely performs some of the most challenging cases in the treatment of endometriosis, fibroids, infertility and other conditions. He is one of the most experienced surgeons in the use of robotic laparoscopy in benign gynecology surgery. He is also one of the few specialists in pelvic pain in the country. As a member of the International Pelvic Pain Society, he is always working on developing new treatment alternatives for his patients. Dr. Weiss has the dedication and special ability necessary to treat pain. Many of his patients travel from all over the country and Latin America for treatment. Dr. Weiss answered some commonly asked questions about his obstetrics and gynecology group.
What is your (Dr. Simon Weiss) background? I have trained with some of the most
renowned specialists in the world. I was born and raised in Peru. I obtained my medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine; trained at Yale University in primary care medicine, and at Baylor College of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology. I was selected as one of the privileged few to train in a fellowship in Laparoscopic surgery at a time when laparoscopy was still not widely used in medicine.
Are there other physicians in the practice?
There are a total of five physicians in the practice, including: Simon Weiss, M.D., Lina Echavvaria M.D., Helen Spalding M.D., Jose Rivas M.D., and Jesica B. Shienbaum M.D. Roxanne Greenfield, physician’s assistant, and Lauren Hirst, mid-wife recently joined the practice.
What is the main focus of your practice?
We offer a complete range of services for women, including gynecology, high risk obstetrics, breast pap tests, pelvic reconstructive surgery, endometriosis and much more. We manage complex cases as routinely as simple ones.
What can patients expect when they visit the office? They will find medical care professionals that care about them, as well as stateof-the-art equipment to treat gynecological problems. The physicians and staff take what-

ever time is needed to solve their problems. Most of the staff has been in the practice for 5 to 10 years. They are committed to each and every one of our patients.
Do you treat chronic pelvic pain? As a
member of the International Pelvic Pain Society, I have the opportunity to exchange ideas with physicians from all of the United States and around the world on a regular basis. Since pain is only perceived by the patient, I have to understand the patient’s pain so well that I can almost feel it myself.
Describe your experience with robotic surgery. It has been 2 1⁄2 years since I introduced
robotic surgery to the treatment of pain and the results have been spectacular. I am able to perform a more complete treatment when compared to traditional surgery or laparoscopy. Patients also recover faster and with less pain. Robotic surgery has done the same for the treatment of endometriosis and fibroids. These surgeries are routinely done with the robot and patients go home the next day.
Do you treat endometriosis? My team and I treat all aspects of the disease, including pain, infertility, endometriomas, radical excision and robotic surgery. I have been treating endometriosis for 15 years.
have instituted a medical weight loss program with a special team that is trained and ready to help patients in their journey to becoming healthier. They review the patient’s health and medical history and perform comprehensive medical testing to develop an individualized program.
What procedures do you perform in the office? We always strive to help our patients
avoid major surgery. Our state-of-the-art equipment allows us to perform a wide range of procedures in the office that would otherwise be done in an operating room. Some of these include: essure sterilization; endometrial ablation for bleeding; interstim for urge incontinence; colposcopy for diagnosis of pre-cancer or cancer of the cervix; cryotherapy to treat pre-cancer and other benign conditions; pelvic rehabilitation and biofeedback for rehabilitation of the pelvic floor muscles; urodynamic test and cystoscopy to evaluate a wide range of bladder problems; 4D ultrasounds to clearly visualize in utero babies and more.
What procedures do you perform in the hospital? Some of the procedures we per-
form in the hospital include: vaginal deliveries, cesarean sections, surgical treatment of fibroids, endometriosis, tumors, incontinence, pelvic pain, infertility, sexual dysfunction and more. For information, call 954-538-1300 or visit www.myobdoctor.com. The Miramar office is located at the Memorial Miramar Office Building, 1951 SW 172nd Ave., Suite 405. The Hollywood office is located at 4100 Hollywood Blvd., 2nd Floor.
What kind of care can a maternity patient expect to receive? We carefully evaluate any
potential or real problems. Since we have seven physicians, we are able to coordinate the care of our patients. Hi-risk or complicated cases are discussed within the group. Specialists are consulted as the case requires.
Do you offer Ultrasound studies for your maternity patients? Both offices have the
latest Phillips ultrasound equipment with 4D capability. Each of the Ultrasound technicians has over 20 years of experience.
Do you help patients manage menopause?
We have numerous options to help the most challenging complaints of this condition.

Hollywood Park Elementary is Ob“SEUSS”ed
School news
By Beverly Perkins
From the Cat in the Hat, to Thing 1 and Thing 2, Hollywood Park put on a day for their students with so much to do. Volunteers came in to read to the classes, They made red and white striped hats and delicious treats for the masses. Teachers decorated their doors throughout the grades, While everyone loved marching the halls in a parade. One could hear “Fox in Socks” and “Green Eggs and Ham”, The biggest highlight of the day was that no one needed to take exams.
T
here certainly was no one like the infamous Dr. Seuss who created magical stories with plenty of color, whimsical characters and clever tonguetwisting rhyming words. The most acclaimed children’s author and illustrator, Theodor Seuss Geisel, is celebrated in schools across the nation each year during the week of his birthday in March. This year would have marked the celebrated author’s 112th birthday. Dr. Seuss has had a tremendous impact on literacy for youngsters. Many, as young as kindergarten age, are able to recognize the Cat in the Hat symbol on his books. They are also able to recite lines from some of his most popular titles. The celebration coincides with the National Education Association (NEA), “Read Across America Day” which encourages young children to read, read, read. This year, the highlighted book, “What Pet Should I Get?” is a newly discovered one in the Seuss
library collection. The never before seen picture book captures a classic childhood moment of choosing a pet. A brother and sister discover how difficult it is to make up one’s mind and make a choice to come together to agree while understanding the responsibilities of becoming a pet owner. “A pup and a kitten. They looked like good fun. NOW which would we pick? We could only pick one.” – Dr. Seuss Hollywood Park Elementary loves a celebration and they went all out to honor the good doc and his cast of characters. Administrators and teachers took the opportunity to show their spirit by dressing up in typical Seuss attire to create excitement among their students. Also, in honor of Dr. Seuss day, Broward Education Foundation President & CEO Thomas Severino read “Green Eggs and Ham” to Ms. Santiago’s 4th grade class. “You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.” – Dr. Seuss

Those most at risk for developing varicose veins and related issues are women. They are more likely to suffer from varicose veins than men, though men make up about 20 percent of our patients. Varicose veins may develop during pregnancy or as the result of hormonal changes during menopause. Family history can put you at higher risk, and those suffering from obesity are more likely to have varicose veins. It is estimated that up to 40 percent of the world’s population suffers from varicose veins in various forms. Dr. Soffer is recognized as one of the leading vein experts in the United States and trains physicians from around the world on advanced vein treatment techniques. here are certain signs and symptoms that indicate a vein problem that is more than just cosmetic. The development of varicose veins is often the first sign of venous insufficiency, and this can progress to more serious consequences of chronic venous insufficiency including swelling, skin changes and ulceration. Many people do not know, however, that congestive heart failure and varicose veins are often mistaken for one another. While vein symptoms often manifest themselves cosmetically, they can be and often are part of a greater circulatory problem. Vein disease is a progressive disease, so symptoms will worsen if left untreated and will require more extensive treatment in the future. Left untreated, varicose veins will increase in size and number. Symptoms may worsen and can lead to leg swelling, chronic skin changes such as dermatitis and discoloration – and in severe cases, non-healing ulcerations. These problems make it difficult to sit or stand for long periods of time, which in turn may affect a person’s activity level and quality of life. Varicose veins may also indicate a critical blockage in deeper veins, a condition called deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, that can be life threatening. Consequently, proper medical evaluation and treatment of varicose veins is important.

Fat Reduction with CoolSculpting
“Peter”
T
he number one cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States in 2014 was liposuction. Approximately 350,000 liposuction procedures were performed last year in the United States according to statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. There is an emphasis on nutrition, exercise, and leading a healthy lifestyle to look and feel better, but there comes a time when despite diet and exercise unwanted localized fat deposits don’t go away. For many patients, removal of these pockets of subcutaneous fat through liposuction is the best option. However, there are cases when a person is not a candidate for surgical fat removal. The reason for not undergoing surgery may be multifactorial. There may be a medical contraindication or another personal reason why an individual would rather have a noninvasive approach to improving their body contour. Today, there are several nonsurgical fat removal options. The majority of them have only shown minimal or no benefit in controlled experimental studies with the exception of Cryolipolysis. The removal of fat by application of localized “freezing” technique is how CoolSculpting works. By no means is this technique equal in efficacy or outcome to liposuction, but it can be an effective method to reduce localized fat deposits for certain individuals. Based upon evidence of safe and effective body contouring clinical studies in humans, Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) received FDA clearance for fat reduction in the flanks in 2010, then for the abdomen in 2012. Recent studies have shown benefit in treatment of the lateral thighs with 86% of the patients treated noticing a visible fat reduction with 90% satisfaction with the treatment. There are several vacuum cup applicators available now, including the standard contoured cup, CoolCore, and the flat cup, CoolFit, applicator. Fat removal with this device is now available for the inner and outer thighs, after receiving the FDA approval in April 2014. The applicator is placed over the region of localized fat excess. The fat is treated with a vacuum assisted device, which delivers cold to the subcutaneous fat, destroying the fat cells which are metabolized by the body and eliminated naturally. Some patients experience redness, minor bruising, tingling, numbness or discomfort in the treated areas, but this is temporary and will resolve completely. Often times, patients return to work immediately after their CoolSculpting session is over. Over the next several weeks to months, the treatment area shows a reduction in subcutaneous fat and improved contour. We are now offering the most advanced techniques in CoolSculpting and CoolSmooth techniques to ensure our patients receive the best positive treatments for body contouring.
