Rhythm of The Night – Hollywood’s Drum Circle By Beverly Perkins

I

f you haven ’ t experienced one

of the most unique events that Hollywood offers you must add it to your “to do” list. Two years ago, Jeffrey Lee, owner of Resurrection Drums, started The Drum Circle. Not only does Resurrection Drums sponsor it, they present it along with The City of Hollywood. It takes place at the ArtsPark on every Full Moon, weather permitting, at the west end of the park which is closest to Downtown from 7-9 pm. The City provides the seating and the sound system and “Rez Drums” donates their time and their passion. The Drum Circle is open to all ages. Young children are always encouraged, as one segment of the evening is dedicated to teaching them a cool rhythm in which they learn and then play for the crowd. If you don’t have a drum, you can still participate by watching, listening and clapping. Of course, it is encouraged to bring a drum since being part of the Drum Circle is becoming part of the community and the only way to fully enjoy the experience. Drums were the first instrument ever played and used for the earliest form of long distance communication. A different drum is featured each month along with a close up history of it, what part of the world it comes from and the special rhythm associated with it. Resurrection

Drums, the largest “Drums Only Drum Shop” in North America, offers a great selection of these “Drum Circle Drums” starting at just $3. Jeffrey Lee, the drum circle facilitator, says, “It is very therapeutic and relieves stress. My favorite part is that it ties up your hands so that you cannot be playing with your cell phone or your I-pad. We absolutely take you away from your stressful day to day routine and at the end of the night you will be relaxed and breathing easy. Very, very, Therapeutic! Folks come once, and they are hooked!” A drum circle gets back to the basics. Those that attend will be working, listening, reacting and cooperating with others to create a powerful message to and from the Universe. No experience is necessary, but a wonderful experience is received upon attending. The rhythm is going to get you. Bring a drum or other percussion instrument to this FREE guided drum circle. ArtsPark at Young Circle - 1 Young Circle from 7:00pm9:00pm. - first full moon each month - More info at visithollywoodfl.org/events or call 954-926-0204

Be Impulsive and See Daniel Pontet at Artwalk By Beverly Perkins

E

very 3 rd Saturday of the month , The City of H ollywood pres -

ents its’ monthly Artwalk event. Stroll along Downtown Hollywood and visit the art galleries and businesses that showcase local, regional and international artwork while listening to the sounds of a saxophone and/or a violin or harp. It is an evening of art, culture, music and so much more. One highlight is seeing the world class, award winning, Uruguayan artist, Daniel Pontet. He’s best known locally for receiving first place in the “Heineken Mural Competition” depicting life in South Florida, which can be seen on Flagler Street and 27th Avenue in Miami. He was also a political cartoonist for El Herald. Now he can be found each month along with The Resurrection Drum Orchestra outside 2020 Harrison Street performing a unique fusion of artistic impression now known as “IMPULSE ART”. This fusion of artistic collaboration and reaction was born when Daniel happened to be at one of Hollywood’s “Full Moon Drum Circles”. He was astonished at the energy produced by the drumming and met with Jeffrey Lee, the facilitator

of the circle, after the event. Together the talented twosome decided to pursue the mixing of two art forms: music and art. They call their exhibit, “IMPULSE ART”. Those that have never seen this are astonished when they see the drummers rolling up their sleeves, while the artist rolls up his pants. Lee guides the drumming orchestra, where both musicians and the artist close their eyes, and play and paint what they feel. As the orchestra is creating a rhythm with their hands, Daniel paints with his feet on a large canvas for all to see. This is a true interaction of two art forms and the masterpiece created is an unexpected one. DOWNTOWN HOLLYWOOD ARTWALK - Visit galleries and shops in Downtown Hollywood while enjoying art, cultural entertainment, live music, murals and more during ArtWalk on the 3rd Saturday of every month from 7:00pm-10:00pm. Cost is FREE. For more information, please call 954-924-2980 - www.visithollywoodfl.org/ artwalk.

What’s Cookin’ On The Circle? By Beverly Perkins

F

ood trucks have become a huge culinary phenomenon

over the past few years and have been popping up all over the country. They have evolved from small old fashioned lunch carts to large custom trucks with great graphics and full kitchens. These trucks are the best alternative for those wanting to open a restaurant. Operating expenses are much lower than paying high rent, a large staff and all those other necessary expenses which is why they have gained so much popularity. Sources say that to be successful in the business, one needs a unique specific menu and truly great food at good prices. Many festivals are coming to different cities and Hollywood is lucky enough to have their very own event each week. Where else can you get Texas BBQ, Vietnamese and Indian street food, gourmet gelato and organic cuisine at the same place you can get an all American burger? This asphalt food court most definitely has something available to satisfy every palate. Burger Beast puts on “Food Trucks at ArtsPark” in Young Circle every Monday night, year round, from 5:30-9:30pm. About 1500 to 2000 people attend each week where items vary in pricing between 5 to 10 dollars with 26 trucks in attendance. Gather your friends and family and go take a bite at one of Hollywood’s most delicious events on a beautiful South Florida evening. Here is a sampling of what trucks you can expect to find at the circle…

A Taste of Delish 2015 By Beverly Perkins

M

ore than 200 guests

attended ARC Broward’s Delish 2015 VIP Kick-Off Party at the newly-opened Japanese restaurant, Kuro, located at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. This private event featured the cuisine of executive chef and resort culinary director Alex Becker, a DJ and an open bar. The invitation-only list included Delish 2015 sponsors, VIP ticket holders, ARC Broward Culinary Institute student chefs and Delish 2015 culinary judges as well as a panel of esteemed food bloggers. In years past, Delish has been a soldout success and is always anticipated to be bigger and better. Therefore, this year was the debut of the VIP Kick-Off Party. Delish 2015 has numerous sponsors, but with one being Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, it was a perfect venue to start the festivities. Everyone got to get a taste of what to expect at the main event while meeting each other and enjoying the Japanese culinary creations from Kuro. Adding a new competitive element to the mix is a culinary battle between Broward and Miami-Dade, where top chefs will compete for the title “Most Delish County” in front of an esteemed food blogger judging panel. They will also vote on their favorite dish amongst the chefs and award the winner with the “Bloggers Choice” accolade. Event attendees will indulge in a variety of delicious eats and tantalizing spirits sponsored by Stoli Vodka, all while dancing and enjoying live entertainment and a

silent auction which all benefit ARC Broward. One amazing restaurant from either Broward or Miami-Dade will take the winning prize during this fourth annual culinary extravaganza. ARC Broward is a nationally accredited, private, 501 (c )(3) not-for-profit organization which provides services to children and adults with autism, Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities as well as those with various life challenges. ARC Broward operates under three mission-based enterprises which include the ARC Broward Learning Institute, ARC Broward Culinary Institute and ARC Broward Electronics Recycling Services. These programs provide opportunities for those with these disabilities to live, work and play in their communities. Delish 2015 event proceeds will benefit ARC Broward programs including the ARC Broward Culinary Institute. The institute offers a 16 week certificate program that allows students with developmental disabilities and other life challenges the ability to obtain experience with on-the-job training and then be placed in the culinary field. Other proceeds will be used to build a larger culinary school which will offer more opportunities for students. Car Crazy in Downtown Hollywood By Beverly Perkins

T

he D ream C ar Classic , presented by Cobra J oe Productions ,

has made a great come-back to the Downtown Hollywood area. Held on the first Sunday of the month, the Dream Car Classic gives gearheads and enthusiasts a chance to bring their pristine pride and joy rides out to show them off to the public on a stretch of Hollywood Boulevard. Cobra Joe Productions is taking car shows to the next level for South Florida and surrounding areas. They believe that all car shows and events should be enjoyable for both participants and spectators alike. They differentiate themselves from other area shows since they open theirs to hot rods, customs, muscle cars, tricked-out trucks, classic motorcycles, late models and, of course, the classics. Expect to see dozens of automobiles lined up along the Boulevard each month. If you have a cam and carb that you would like to display, you can register your vehicle for $20. Vehicles can also be registered the morning of the show as space permits. Participation for judging is limited to 85 vehicles. The top 30 vehicles will receive a trophy.

Car shows are a great way for automotive and performance enthusiasts to engage and interact with each other in a setting created especially for them. This kind of environment allows them to exchange ideas and thoughts on this popular pastime. The car craze has been around for decades, and even celebrities have been known to make appearances at these expos. Butch Patrick, famously known for his role as Eddie Munster, the child werewolf, on the 1960’s hit series, The Munsters, recently visited the Dream Car Classic during his tour across America. He brought along “The Munster Coach” and “The Dragula”, which he proudly owns. He was able to share stories and take photos with the fans while celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Munsters. Of course, all the events are family friendly and young ones are encouraged to attend. Spectator attendance is free and many restaurants discount menus. Don’t drive yourself crazy, if you missed the last one, you can catch the next as they are monthly. Dream Car Classic-first Sunday of each month 10:00am-3:00pm - Hollywood Boulevard between 19th & 20th Avenue Downtown Hollywood – To register your vehicle email: jbevsr@msn.com - For more information call 954-825-1027/ www.cobrajoeproductions.com

Ask the Expert

Which Breast Surgery Is Right for You? By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

A

ccording to the American Society for

Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery operations in our country. Patients will often come to our office wanting their breasts to be fuller and are not certain which type of surgery is best for them. Is an implant necessary, or lift, or both? The technique used to enhance a woman’s breast should be individualized based on each woman’s personal appearance goals and unique anatomy. A common misconception is that breast implants make a woman’s breast stay up longer and not sag. This is not true. A breast implant adds volume or size to the breast. An implant can increase breast width, projection, and firmness, but doesn’t prevent the breast from sagging with time, especially if a woman doesn’t wear a bra. When a woman loses breast tissue volume or size as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, or through natural deficiency in breast development, then placing a breast implant beneath the glandular tissue or under the muscle (pectoralis) will enhance the appearance. When there is excess breast skin, such that the nipple and areolar position is now below the fold of the breast, then a breast lift or mastopexy is most likely necessary. This procedure involves removing the excess skin and tightening the remaining breast tissue to elevate or lift the nipple and areola and the breast itself. The type of mastopexy procedure utilized depends on the shape and the degree of sagging (or ptosis). There are three main types of breast lifts depending on where the incisions are placed on the breast. Periareolar (Benelli, around the nipple only), circumvertical (lollipop, around the nipple and from the nipple to the fold), and inverted “T,” or anchor incision same as above with an additional incision along the inframammary crease or fold. All are safe and effective techniques for lifting the breast depending on the degree of sagging. A breast augmentation and mastopexy can be safely performed at the same time, depending on the patient’s anatomy and individual history. An implant can improve the aesthetic appearance of the breasts when volume or size enhancement is necessary, in addition to skin tightening or lifting. In general terms, if a patient is an A or small B cup bra with sagging breast tissue, a breast lift and implant would be beneficial if the patient desires an increase in breast size or projection. When a patient’s breasts are a full C or D cut, then the breast lift alone may be sufficient depending on her individual breast appearance goals. As with facial rejuvenation and body contouring, there is no single breast enhancement procedure that is applicable to every patient. A thorough preoperative consultation and discussion of each woman’s individual appearance goals is essential to ensuring the proper surgery technique is performed. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care. Yet many consumers are unaware of the far reaching benefits of a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Unlike a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, under a Chapter 13 a debtor restructures, instead of liquidating debts. A Chapter 13 debtor is able to repay over a period of 3-5 years all mortgage arrearages, late fees, escrow shortages, and even past due homeowner association (HOA) dues. Also, credit card and other unsecured debt can be negotiated down to about one percent (1%) of the amount owed, student loan payments may be reduced, IRS liens can be reduced or wiped out, car payments can be lowered or eliminated, and even attorneys’ fees are paid over time as part of the Chapter 13 plan. Perhaps the most beneficial part of a Chapter 13 plan is the ability to remove all second mortgages, lines of credit and other liens (including HOA liens) from your principal residence, and to significantly reduce principal balances on investment properties. In order to qualify, the debtor must be employed, or have a regular source of income, and the amount owed on the first mortgage of your principal residence must be greater than the market value of that home. As it relates to the debtor’s investment properties, under a Chapter 13 plan you are able to wipe out any second mortgages or credit lines, and reduce the principal balance of the first mortgage on each property to the current fair market value, payable at a low fixed interest rate, amortized over 10-15 years, through an affordable monthly payment. Once a debtor submits a Chapter 13 plan and begins to make payments, the lender cannot proceed with a foreclosure. If you owe more on your first mortgage than the fair market value of your home; have one or more additional mortgages, lines of credit or other liens on that property; and are currently employed, you may be a perfect candidate to file a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. If you also have investment properties which are upside down in value, and would like to keep them because they are generating rental income, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy is the ideal solution to resolve your mortgage crisis instead of wasting countless hours attempting to modify your loans directly with lenders. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer bankruptcy seminar offered by the Arcia Law Firm in our area. Admission is free if you mention that you heard about the seminar through this magazine. Please contact the Arcia Law Firm at 954-437-9066 to make a reservation for the next seminar or to schedule your free consultation with an attorney. Slender Fit U Makes Dieting Easy By Debby Teich

S

lender Fit U is helping clients turn their

bodies into fat burning machines. They are losing 1/2 to 2 pounds of fat per day without exercise, diet pills or packaged foods, and they are keeping it off. The medically supervised program helps dieters modify their relationship with food and eating, resulting in an easily maintained, longterm weight loss. It is the last diet they will ever need to do. Geri Kelleher, Owner and Program Director, answered some commonly asked questions about the program. Why do people call you the “HCG Guru”? Eight years ago, I lost 25 lbs. on the diet and it changed my life. For the past seven years, I have helped thousands of people achieve their weight loss goals with this program. The best part of my job is seeing people change before my eyes and watching them get their confidence back. Geri Kelleher, Owner and How does Slender Program Director Fit U differ from similar programs? My clients tell me that the difference is the way we treat people. We stay involved with all of our clients; they are not just a number. If they miss an appointment, we call them. We make sure that every client gets the proper guidance and support throughout the program and achieves their weight loss goals. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest dosage for weight loss. We also give injectable prescription B12. How much can clients expect to lose? Clients can choose a 23-day program or a 46-day program. Women typically lose 15 lbs. in the 23-day program
