It’s Vacation Time

I

t’s hard to believe that it’s summertime already. It seems like just yesterday we were shopping for school supplies and back-to-school outfits, and now the kids are finishing their last few days of school. Where does the time go? Before summer slips by, seriously think about your summer activities and vacations. Whether you choose to stay close to home and enjoy quick trips to the Keys, marvel at the magic of Orlando, take a family road trip, or fly off to faraway destinations, this is the time when

memories are made. It’s not where you go, but what you do that matters. Spend quality time with your children, your family and your friends. Never-ending work, studying for the next school year, or preparing for college can wait a tiny bit. Now is the time to enjoy life and each other. And don’t forget your dad on Father’s Day!

Cool Off This Summer at Castaway Island

Community News

By Beverly Perkins

A

great family fun activity this summer is right in Hollywood. There is no need to drive miles away and spend high prices on admission tickets either. Castaway Island, located at T.Y. (Topeekeegee Yugnee) Park, is now open for the 2015 aquatics season. This local water park is a great way to cool off this summer. Castaway Island offers two interactive water playgrounds. One is designated for smaller children as it has a small slide with climbing features. The other is more suitable for older children since it has larger features and includes buckets that regularly fill with water and then dump on the playground below. There is also a zero-entry, hard –bottom swim lagoon with a waterfall. Additionally, the complex has a marina which offers boat rentals on weekends and holidays from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Kayaks, canoes, paddleboats and johnboats are all available to rent for $10/hour, $15/

two hours and $25/four hours. A refundable deposit is required and children ages 17 and under must be accompanied on each boat by an adult. U.S. Coast Guard approved life vests are required and provided at no extra charge to boaters. Another highlight are the Funbrellas. These 20 foot diameter umbrellas accommodate 30 people and include a picnic table. They are perfect for parties and are available to rent. Advanced reservations are suggested though. If bringing your own picnic supplies is not an option, a concession stand is on premises. It offers pizza, hot dogs, ice cream and other snacks plus beverages for purchase. Most importantly, swim lessons are available at Castaway Island through SWIM Central. This is the coordinating agency for water-safety instruction and awareness in Broward County. It maintains the most comprehensive database in Florida for swimming pools and water-safety programs in the county. SWIM

Central’s curriculum-based programs provide 10 free 30-minute water-safety classes over a two-week period, taught by certified water-safety instructors during the school day who have been carefully selected and trained through SWIM Central. Admission fees to the water park are reasonable at $8 per person for the entire day and $5 per person after 3:00pm (plus applicable Florida sales tax). Children 12 months and under are admitted free. However, the park’s regular gate entrance fee of $1.50 per person (children 5 and under are free) is in effect on weekends and holidays. Get out of the heat this summer and take advantage of one of Broward county’s best parks. It’s something the entire family can enjoy. T.Y. Park - 3300 N. Park Rd., Hollywood, FL 33021 - (954)357-8811 - Hours of operation: 9:30am-5:20pm

Girl Scout Troop #10794 Deliver More Than Just Cookies By Beverly Perkins

G

irl Scout Troop #10794 of Hollywood always keep their Girl Scout Promise of “helping people at all times and making the world a better place”. These girls from the Southeast Florida region are Cadettes, grades 6-8. This particular group has a goal to improve their community and their planet by participating and developing various projects benefiting others.

Just recently, they embraced this mission at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s Conine Clubhouse. The Conine Clubhouse, named in honor of World Series champion, Jeff Conine and his family, is located on the hospital campus. It serves as a “home away from home” for families of children receiving medical care at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Based on availability, families can stay free of charge in a comfortable environment. After one of Troop #10794’s own Girl Scout members had an extended stay last summer, they wanted to give back. The facility helped their fellow scout and family

recover, so they did some research to find out how they could help. They went to the Conine Clubhouse, toured the facility, spoke with the staff and more importantly, the families. They began to understand the difficulties that patients and families experience: the stress, the exhaustion, the multiple doctor’s appointments and long hospital stays. Everyone thinks of cookies when one mentions Girl Scouts, so they decided that food was a necessity. However, one cannot survive or stay healthy by eating cookies alone - even if they may be the infamous Thin Mints. So, these smart little cookies decided to use the proceeds earned through their Girl Scout Cookie Sale to purchase healthy alternatives. They created, tasted and tested healthy and simple recipes such as breakfast items, salads, entrees, sides, smoothies and desserts to be sure they were delicious. The troop then organized and delivered large gift baskets filled with these healthy and nutritious snacks, recipes, arts and crafts and letters wishing family members a speedy recovery. “We are so proud of our girls for taking an interest in their community and what they accomplished. They used their personal experience to take action in providing comfort for families when they need it most. Their work makes the world a better place.” Denise Valz, CEO of Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida. Best Kept Sea-cret in Hollywood – The Sea Turtles & Their Babies Program By Beverly Perkins

B

eginning each May, sea turtles make their way to our shores to lay their eggs in the sand. Once the sea turtle buries the eggs, she leaves and does not return. The eggs incubate for two months and then the hatchlings make their way out of the nest. These hatchlings emerge after dark when the temperature cools. This process is challenging and with any luck they make it into the ocean and survive. Naturalists at Anne Kolb Nature Center offer an educational program to help them do so along with the help of Nova Southeastern University (NSU). This Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program is contracted out by Broward County and carried out by Nova Southeastern University. NSU surveys all of Broward County beaches every day from March 1st to October 31st. This conservation team is dedicated to saving the turtles. They primarily survey the shores to identify sea turtle crawls and determine if they are a nest or a false crawl. They also respond to sea turtle strandings, which are when injured or dead sea turtles wash up on shore. In addition, they survey lighting along the coastal properties and engage in outreach events. Curtis Slagle, Project Manager / Permit Holder for The Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program states that, “Sea turtles use the light from the moon and stars reflecting off the ocean, in addition to other minor cues, as a guide to direct them to the ocean. This is both for hatchlings and nesting mothers. Coastal lighting confuses these turtles and they are very likely to disorient and crawl toward the streets, away from the ocean. This is a leading cause of hatchling mortality. Hollywood residents can reduce this effect by buying and/or retrofitting turtle friendly lighting (low to the ground, shield, low wavelength), using blackout curtains, refrain from using unnecessary lights at night, educating others, and writing to your local government about potential lighting issues along the coast.” One popular outreach event is “The Sea Turtles and Their Babies” program at the Anne Kolb Nature Center which occurs every Wednesday and Friday, July 1st- August 28th at 8:00pm. This is where Slagle and his team perform hatchling releases with the public. Following an hour-long slide presentation and lecture

10

JUNE 2015 | OUR CITY Hollywood & Hallandale

in Mangrove Hall, participants are able to accompany a naturalist to the beach to see first-hand what these innocent creatures experience after they are born. Participants will also learn how do identify each of the species of sea turtles found in South Florida, learn about their habitat, breeding and nesting, identification of crawls and nests, plus discover conservation efforts and witness the difficulties these sea creatures face. Three species attendees may be able to see which are predominant in the Hollywood area are the Loggerhead, Green and Leatherback. Although it’s not guaranteed, it’s always a possibility. Community involvement is encouraged for all ages. It takes devoted individuals like Curtis Slagle and his NSU team to protect and save wildlife for future generations. Slagle says, “I am very passionate about my work with sea turtles as I can relate to them. Growing up I was the awkward kid and never really fit in. If the ocean was a high school, I think the sea turtle would be analogous to my childhood, the awkward creature that isn’t the coolest, not the strongest and somewhat of a loner. They have always held a special place in my heart and I want to do everything I can the help them.” Pre-registration is required, as space is extremely limited. Online reservations are being accepted now at www.Broward.org/Parks.The cost is $10 per person plus the cost of metered parking. No artificial lights or cameras are permitted on the beach in the hatchling area. Sea Turtles and Their Babies – Ann Kolb Nature Center at West Lake Park – 751 Sheridan Street, Hollywood – 8:00-9:30pm every Wednesday and Friday July through August - $10 per person – Reservations required (954)357-5161- Reserve now at www. Broward.org/Parks.

Earl Johnston Roofing Has Got You Covered By Beverly Perkins

amongst other things. In 1992, the Torres family lost their roof to Hurricane Andrew. They had it replaced, but over the years the wife took ill and the medical expenses deterred them to keep up with all the home repairs. Mr. Torres is a middle school teacher and they have three children on scholarships at FIU. Mrs. Torres, an avid animal lover, is now in a rehabilitation facility which limits their income since she cannot come home to an unsafe structure. “Whenever we do these NRLB we usually see that the home needs more than just a roof”, says Lynne Johnston. “For the Torres family, we were able to get new gutters and bee removal donated. We encountered a bee hive living in the wall upstairs and called Willie the Bee Man out and he donated his services and was able to remove the bees. Volunteers came and repainted their front door, weeded and trimmed all the bushes around the house. Bank United has been a sponsor on every install so far and has supplied food for volunteers and guests on the install day. GAF is the shingle manufacturer who donates the shingles, and other roofing supply companies we buy from donated all the rest of the material including over 2000 feet of lumber because of the extreme rot in the roof.”

O

ne Hollywood family was nominated to receive a free roof compliments of Earl W. Johnston Roofing, LLC last month. Earl W. Johnston Roofing, LLC is a family owned and operated business who has served the South Florida community since 1986. They are proud recipients of the 2013 GAF Master Elite President’s Club and in 2014 joined the No Roof Left Behind program. No Roof Left Behind was started in Michigan when the recession hit a few years ago. It was founded by brothers who wanted to give back like their grandfather did during the Great Depression. Their mission was to help those in their community who were unfortunate and could not afford the costly repairs on their homes. They had the community come together and nominate those they thought were most deserving. It was an extremely positive experience as people came and donated their time, their materials and their services to install a new roof for a neighbor in need. Earl W. Johnston Roofing, LLC. loved this concept and joined the No Roof Left Behind initiative as a way to give back to the county that has brought them success for more than 29 years. Owner Earl Johnston says, “We are proud to be a part of No Roof Left Behind. The direct positive impact this initiative has on members of this community is something that can’t be described. It is an honor to be able to launch this here. We look forward to seeing our neighbors and customers come together to help one of our own in need.” Recently, they chose the Torres family of Hollywood to receive a new roof

More Than Meat – Penn Dutch Meat Superstore Offers So Many Specialty Items

FEATURE STORY

By Beverly Perkins

N

amed “Best Butcher Shop & Deli” in the “Herald’s Best of Broward / Miami-Dade” and voted in the top ten supermarkets in the country in 2008, it’s no wonder that Penn Dutch Meat Superstore has been an iconic fixture in Hollywood for over 39 years. Being a third generation family business has made them unique in a world filled with franchise markets. They pride themselves by being present for their customers and having a great selection of products with great pricing.

parents and parents bought that current supermarkets do not have. We carry beef sweetbreads, tri tips, osso buco, tripe, ox tails, chicken feet, veal hot dogs and chicken breast sausage, plus those difficult to find seasonal vegetables including broccoli rabe, breadfruits and Japanese and Indian cuisine items daily. We also get those hard to find fruits such as dragon fruits, cactus pears and rambutan which are among the many specialty items.

Sue Gottesman, Head of Marketing for Penn Dutch, took the time to share some interesting facts and answer some commonly asked questions.

Tell us about your yacht provisions. Penn Dutch offers the following to our customers ready to hit the high seas:

▸▸ Custom cut portions on all fresh beef, poultry, veal, pork and lamb ▸▸ Vacuum packing ▸▸ Fresh daily variety of whole or fillet fish, cooked and raw shellfish ▸▸ Case pricing on fresh vegetables and fruits ▸▸ In house bakery and pastry chefs available for custom cakes, cookies and pastries ▸▸ Freshly sliced in-store made deli cold cuts ▸▸ Beer & wine by the case

Do you have other locations? Yes, we have one in Margate which is

located at 3201 North State Road 7 (441). It’s a great location to have in north Broward. They can be reached at (954)974-3900. Their hours are Monday - Saturday 8:00am-8:00pm and Sunday 8:00am-7:00pm.

What separates Penn Dutch Foods from the typical franchise supermarkets? We are a third generation family owned and operated

business. Our focus is on fresh perishables vs. national brand packaged goods. We have our own smokehouses and sausage factory on premises. Therefore, our customers can expect products that are fresher and lower in sodium with very few preservatives. We are also the largest butcher shop in south Florida and we will do custom cuts at no additional charge. Our deli meats are also made in house, including our infamous roast beef.

What meats do you have the largest selection of? We, no doubt,

have the biggest and best selection of poultry, pork, lamb, veal and beef products.

Besides meat, what other food items do you carry? We actually have

the largest fish market in south Florida and are famous for our royal red shrimp which looks like shrimp, but tastes like lobster. We also buy from local commercial fisherman from Ft. Pierce to Key West daily. We carry a variety of gourmet cheeses from around the world with prices far lower than a gourmet cheese shoppe. We proudly purchase our fresh produce from local farms as well as from across the country. Our grocery department acquires special buys on national brands and local small business products, specialty Italian imports, plus a variety of items from the islands and the Latin & South Americas. Our pastries, cakes and breads are all made from scratch daily created by our four pastry chefs on staff.

What is a specialty item that Penn Dutch Foods is most known for? We actually have quite a few! Our all beef “Belly Buster” hot dogs,

which have been dubbed “Filet on a Bun” are one of our signature items. We also have plump and juicy boneless chicken breast, fire glazed and spiral hams, roast beef and fresh sausage. Our french bread is always hot since it’s made all day long. We have had people traveling as far as 200 miles to purchase these favorite products.

What hard-to-find items can customers find? Our meat, fish and produce selections carry those “old school” items that your (and our) grand-

Boulevard Heights Elementary Students Are On The Job

oulevard Heights Elementary students had the opportunity to visit Cliff Berry, Inc. Environmental Services as part of the Kids and The Power of Work (KAPOW) program. KAPOW is a national network of business and elementary school partnerships which introduce and expose students to career awareness through professionally designed lessons taught by volunteers in the classroom and on work sites. The program began 24 years ago and today 60 elementary schools, 423 teachers and administrators and more than 400 volunteers from 90 South Florida businesses participate serving 6,000+ students. Sixty percent of which are minorities who qualify for free or reduced lunch. This type of learning is crucial for the youth of today to be successful in life. Throughout the year students are taught work place ethics, career choices, team building, leadership skills and communication. The curriculum presented consists of eight lessons, each of which feature a work-related concept. The lessons are age appropriate, interactive and of course, educational. Making children aware of work in the real world can be structured into every aspect of a student’s life without them even realizing it. Suggestions are also made in each lesson connecting career themes to other subject areas which allow teachers to reinforce them in a cross curriculum. Boulevard Heights Elementary has just started this wonderful partnership with KAPOW. There are so many opportunities that students get to become exposed to, and this time 114 third graders got to see how the Cliff Berry facility operates. The students were able to learn how and why there is a need to preserve their environment for future generations. They also got to see how equipment works and be educated on hazardous spills and recycling oil. There’s nothing more beneficial than giving children the opportunity to learn in a real hands-on environment. However, along with learning there still is fun. John Casbarro, President of Learning for Success, Inc. which manages KAPOW in South Florida states, “Young people need to understand that there is a reason for studying beyond doing so for the sake of learning. The KAPOW program addresses this need by helping young people understand early in life that reading, writing, and math are vital to success, in school, work, and life.” KAPOW is always looking for business or individual volunteers, as well as schools interested in participating in the program. For information, visit www.kapowlfs.org; send an email to john. casbarro@gmail.com or call 954-680-3916.

Driftwood Middle School Is Keeping It Green With Rep. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz By Beverly Perkins

T

o celebrate Earth Day’s 45th Anniversary, Rep. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz joined students from Driftwood Middle School’s Health and Wellness Academy, the National Honor Society and the school’s administration faculty to highlight the school’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Driftwood Middle School pioneered recycling and energy conservation in the Broward School District. Rep. Congresswoman Wasserman Schulz and the Driftwood Cardinals participated in an outdoor activity in the school’s butterfly garden and then they completed the celebration by making healthy treats using the sustainably-grown food from the school’s fruit garden. “On Earth Day, it is critically important to celebrate our planet and the sustainable actions that keep it healthy and green – no matter how big or small. Driftwood Middle School has been a leader in Florida in helping our students live sustainable, green lives and I was proud to join them in their celebration”,

states Rep. Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz. A key contributor in the Earth Day activities was Driftwood Middle’s Physical Education and Wellness teacher, Linda Gancitano, Ms. Gancitano is always at the helm of all things green. She single-handedly gathered a team of teachers and students to collect environmental data to earn national sustainability awards. She was the innovator for the school’s “Green Team” in 2008 after watching Al Gore’s documentary on global warming. This team reduced energy usage by 23 percent and recycled 46 percent of waste materials. Last year, she initiated a district-wide energy reduction project called “How Low Can You Go? Energy Challenge”. This was a partnership with the NBA’s Miami Heat who gave awards and incentives to those Broward schools who participated in reducing

CO2 emissions that are harmful to the atmosphere. Recently, this inspirational teacher was honored at The White House as one of eight “Champions of Change for Climate Education and Literacy”. This event celebrates Americans who enhance climate education and literacy in classrooms and communities across the country. Besides being an advocate for the environment and protecting resources and saving school funds, Gancitano inspires students to be active participants in protecting the earth for all the future generations and possibly have careers in science. Driftwood Middle School won several awards for its sustainability efforts, including a 2012-2013 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School award and 2012-2013 Florida Green School Award for Middle Schools.

Hollywood Hills Elementary School Students Exhibited Their Artwork BY Beverly Perkins

T

he Art and Culture Center of Hollywood presents contemporary gallery exhibitions, live stage performances and quality educational programs for adults and children alike. They have created space for teachers from both public and private schools, universities and non-profit educational organizations to display their students’ art work in their Student Exhibition area. This professional setting allows students to express themselves and feel pride in their work. Therefore, giving them the confidence to continue exploring their creativity. Every school year the Center’s Education Department provides local schools an opportunity to be displayed in the gallery space as a free service. This allows local student artwork to be seen by patrons visiting the main exhibitions. Most schools exhibit for two to three weeks. The instructors, sometimes students assist, design and install the exhibitions within the space. Receptions can also be held which really make the students feel special.

Last month Hollywood Hills Elementary presented its 2014-2015 Yearbook Design Contest. It was open to all students from kindergarten through fifth grade. The theme this year was “Friendship”. The purpose

of this contest was to encourage students to be active participants in the creation of their yearbook. The goal was to make students aware of what “friendship” means to them through their interpretation on their artwork. How they chose to express themselves was up to them. They were told that friendship means something different to everyone. There is no right or wrong way of what it means to each individual. They were then given some words describing what a good friendship is. Words such as truthful, kind, honest, caring, funny, forgiving, nice, generous, sincere, sweet, warm, lov-

ing, reliable, considerate, responsible, giving, gentle, humorous, sensitive, believable, brave, cheerful, easygoing, empathetic, optimistic and thoughtful got the creative juices flowing. The Hollywood Hills Elementary PTA curated the 67 drawings. The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood appointed a panel of professionals to select the winners. They had one finalistwinner per grade and the Yearbook Cover winner was chosen among the finalists. Finalists’ artwork will be published on the back cover and honorable mentions of the top two in each grade will also be included in the Yearbook. “The only way to have a friend is to be one.”-Ralph Waldo Emerson. very high school curriculum in every school district across the United States gives students the opportunity to practice leadership skills. FBLA, HOSA and DECA are a few examples of courses taught to develop these valuable skills necessary to be successful. A school’s district must provide ample activities outside the classroom to show their commitment to student leadership development. Fortunately, The School Board of Broward County leads the state and the nation.

South Broward High School has announced their outstanding seniors and we’re happy to report that they certainly earned high marks not only on tests and papers, but as community leaders and as individuals. Mission Catpossible – A Purr-fect Solution Community News

By Beverly Perkins

T

he Humane Society of Broward County and Broward County Animal Care & Adoption teamed up earlier last month for “Mission Catpossible”. This is a collaborative effort to spay/neuter felines across Broward County. Felines who reside in certain zip codes will be sterilized for FREE. Hollywood and Hallandale residents should take advantage of this program and tell their friends and family who may reside in the other zip codes. The zip codes are the following: 33009, 33021, 33023, 33024, 33025, 33060, 33314, 33315, 33317, 33324 and 33325. Procedures will be performed on the HSBC mobile unit seven days a week. Appointments are necessary and cat owners must provide proof of residency. To schedule an appointment call 954-463-SPAY(7729) or email spayneuter@hsbroward.com. Vaccinations, microchipping and testing are also available for a fee. However, if someone resides outside the zip code area and has a cat they need spayed or neutered, they can certainly do so at the regular price of $15 for males and $40 for females. Feral cats are always $15. According to Christopher Agostino, President/CEO of the Humane Society of Broward County, “Our goal is to sterilize an additional 4,000 felines in the next 12 months. Currently the HSBC provides low cost spay/neuter to nearly 12,000 pets that have homes and for feral and free roaming cats each year. This is in addition to spaying/neutering more than 8,000 animals that are placed through the shelter’s adoption program.”

Although kittens are adorable, there are not enough homes to care for them properly. The goal of the program is to reduce the number of unwanted cats. This ambitious partnership between the Humane Society of Broward County and The Broward County Animal Care and Adoption organizations can be be a success with the help of the community. The Humane Society of Broward County is conveniently located at 2070 Griffin Road, just a block west of I-95. The HSBC is a private, non-profit organization supported by donations from people and companies who want to help the animals. The shelter receives no government funding and is not affiliated with any local or national organization with a similar name. To learn more visit www.humanebroward.com Broward County Animal Care and Adoption is dedicated to providing shelter for lost and homeless animals. he number one cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States in 2014 was liposuction, with approximately 350,000 liposuction procedures performed last year in the United States, according to statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. With an emphasis on nutrition, exercise, and leading a healthy lifestyle to look and feel better, there comes a time when, despite diet and exercise, unwanted localized fat deposits don’t go away. For many patients, removal of these pockets of subcutaneous fat through liposuction is the best option. However, there are cases when a person is not a candidate for surgical fat removal. The reason for not undergoing surgery may be multifactorial. There may be a medical contraindication or another personal reason why an individual would rather have a noninvasive approach to improving their body contour. Today, there are several nonsurgical fat removal options. The majority of them have only shown minimal or no benefit in controlled experimental studies with the exception of Cryolipolysis. The removal of fat by application of localized “freezing” technique is how CoolSculpting works. By no means is this technique equal in efficacy or outcome to liposuction, but it can be an effective method to reduce localized fat deposits for certain individuals. Based upon evidence of safe and effective body contouring clinical studies in humans, Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) received FDA clearance for fat reduction in the flanks in 2010, then for the abdomen in 2012. Recent studies have shown benefit in treatment of the lateral thighs, with 86% of the patients treated noticing a visible fat reduction with 90% satisfaction with the treatment. There are several vacuum cup applicators available now, including the standard contoured cup, CoolCore, and the flat cup, CoolFit, applicator. Fat removal with this device is now available for the inner and outer thighs, after receiving the FDA approval in April 2014. The applicator is placed over the region of localized fat excess. The fat is treated with a vacuum assisted device, which delivers cold to the subcutaneous fat. This destroys the fat cells which are metabolized by the body and eliminated naturally. Some patients experience redness, minor bruising, tingling, numbness or discomfort in the treated areas, but this is temporary and will resolve completely. Often times, patients return to work immediately after their CoolSculpting session is over. Over the next several weeks to months, the treatment area shows a reduction in subcutaneous fat and improved contour. We are now offering the most advanced techniques in CoolSculpting and CoolSmooth techniques to ensure our patients receive the best positive treatments for body contouring. The Latest Treatments For Veins Ask the Expert

By Dr. Ariel Soffer, M.D., FAC

I

t is estimated that up to 40% of the world’s population suffers from varicose veins in various forms. In about 50% of the cases, cosmetic vein issues are often a sign of treatable underlying circulation issues. Many people do not know, however, that congestive heart failure and varicose veins are often mistaken for one another. While vein symptoms often manifest themselves cosmetically, they can be and are often part of a greater circulatory problem. The leg swelling that is often considered to be a problem with the heart or blood pressure is often just veins underneath the skin that have failed to work properly. Symptoms often associated with vein disease include leg pain, discoloration, heaviness, swelling, throbbing, itching, restless leg syndrome, cramping, burning and fatigue. Vein disease is a progressive disease, so symptoms will worsen if left untreated. Varicose veins may indicate a critical blockage in deeper veins, a condition called deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, that can be life threatening. A DVT is a blood clot, or thrombus, which typically forms in the calf veins of the leg, but can also develop in the deep veins of the thigh. In addition to the aching in the legs caused by this serious condition, there is also a psychological toll that stems from the appearance of these unsightly veins. Those that suffer from this condition are often too embarrassed and self-conscious to show their legs, which has a tremendous effect on their life-style and overall daily enjoyment of life. Through a relatively simple procedure, using the latest, cutting edge technology, in very little time, you can greatly reduce the symptoms and source of varicose veins. Enodvenous Laser Treatment (EVL) is a quick, minimally invasive laser treatment and does not require hospitalization or complicated surgery. EVL is an FDA-approved procedure in which a small optic fiber is inserted through a needle into the varicose vein, which heats and closes the vein. The entire procedure takes about one hour and causes minimal discomfort. Performed under ultrasound guidance, EVL uses laser energy to treat varicose veins by closing off the vein, preventing it from flowing in the wrong direction down the leg. Your body then naturally uses a multitude of other healthy veins to return blood to the heart. The latest Varicose Vein Treatment, called Foam Sclerotherapy, uses special equipment that helps isolate the affected veins and their origins. The veins are then injected with a mixture air and a solution that causes it to become a foam. This procedure is almost painless, results are immediate, and for most, the results are permanent. The bottom line is that varicose veins and spider veins are treatable. The first step toward treatment is to figure out which type of veins you have. You should see a physician trained in the circulatory system for a thorough consultation and an ultrasound to determine the most effective treatment for you. In addition to making your legs look cosmetically better, vein treatment can actually improve your circulation so that you have healthier legs as well. It’s easier than you think to get yourself back in shorts again for summer! Dr. Soffer is recognized as one of the leading vein experts in the United States and trains physicians from around the world on advanced vein treatment techniques. Breast Implant Revision: Get It Right the Second Time By Jorge A. Perez, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Ask the Expert

B

ikini season is around the corner and breast augmentation continues to be the most common cosmetic procedure performed by plastic surgeons. Breast implants are prostheses that are placed inside the body in young patients with a long life expectancy. Because of this, revisional surgery is sometimes necessary. Statistically about one-third of breast implant patients will have at least one additional surgery in their lifetime. Breast skin factors and additional scarring make it important to have a successful outcome the second time. Here are some of the more common reasons for re-do breast surgery.

Implant Problems

Breast implants come in both saline-filled and silicone gel-filled forms. In addition, there are a variety of shapes and textures. The U.S. F.D.A. has approved the sale of silicone gel breast implants by only three manufacturers. In Latin America, however, over a dozen brands of silicone implants are imported. Columbia, Venezuela and Mexico are principal customers. These implants are often much cheaper but can also create serious problems for the South Florida women whose surgery was performed in these countries. Scar tissue that develops around implants can someAs seen here, the goal of breast implant surgery is times harden and contract, to get it right the first time. However, sometimes revisions are necessary. To view corrective causing a high implant breast cases visit PerezPlasticSurgery.com. or misshapen, deformed breast. Saline or gel implant leakage may also require corrective surgery. Many women with saline implants are now opting to switch to the softer, more natural gels.

Pocket and Skin Problems

The placement pocket for implants can create complications as well. Implants under the muscle can take on a bizarre shape upon contraction of the muscle, especially with activities such as golf, tennis and butterfly exercises. Implant malposition; too high, too wide or very uneven can look odd. In cases of muscle deformity, implant malposition or unpleasantly wide cleavage, reshaping the implant pocket is possible. Patients who require a breast lift with augmentation have several options. We prefer the less scarring peri-areolar lift. However, when patients have had the more extensive anchor breast lift, scar revisions may be indicated. A small subset of plastic surgeons are experienced in re-do breast surgery, so reviewing photos of corrective examples, or speaking with previous patients, is recommended. Finally, it is especially important for women considering revision breast augmentation to have multiple consultations in order to get it right the second time. Dr. Perez is a member of the NOVO National Council of Leaders in Breast Aesthetics and winner of the Aesthetic Academy’s Best Surgical Body Shaping award. He has served as a consultant for both Mentor (J&J) and Inamed (Allergan), leading breast implant manufacturers. Dr. Perez has lectured internationally on the subject of breast surgery and has been selected repeatedly among the Castle Connolly/U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Top Doctors. More information is available at www.PerezPlasticSurgery.com. Visit his Youtube channel to see Dr. Perez on ABC News discussing breast augmentation as a graduation gift.

pet of the month

Zelda’s Cleaning ServiCeS

“Snowball” Snowball is a 6 ½ year old domestic shorthair feline, but believed to have some Maine Coon mixed in there. He’s a big boy weighing in at 17 pounds. He loves his owner/ mommy and has severe separation anxiety. His favorite toy is the one pictured with him. He likes to watch it spin around and around all day. Snowball lives for his salmon treats and loves when it’s time to open the mail. Luckily, he doesn’t like human food, unless it’s salmon night. He enjoys hanging with his human watching tv and was last seen curled up behind the computer where he also likes to hang out.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers: Q. A.

How can I find the recent sales for MY neighborhood? Just email us the name of the subdivision you reside in (Hollywood Hills, Orangebrook Golf Estates, Hollywood Lakes etc.) and we will send you all the sales for the past 90 days.

Q.

If I am paying $_____ rent every month, how much would my mortgage payments be if I bought a home/condo? Call or email us and we will send you our Monthly Rent = Mortgage Payment Chart or you can find it on our website www.wesellhollywood.com.

A. Q. A.

I think I am finally ready to buy a house. Where do I start? Email us for our Step by step Buyer Guide or go to www.wesellhollywood.com and click on our Homeowner Buying Chart.

Q.

I don’t want to spend too much on updates before I sell my home but I know it needs some work. What can I do to enhance the value of my home without paying a lot of money? In the current market, remodeled homes sell the fastest. However, de-cluttered properly staged homes with new paint, clean carpet/floors, sparkling windows and a fresh smell are close behind. We can help with all of the above with cost-effective solutions.

A.

Q. A.

THINKING OF SELLING? Not all Realtors are created equal. Anything and everything you need to know about selling your home can be found at our website www.wesellhollywood.com. From what an effective listing looks like, how to prepare your home for sale, and what to expect during the process from offer to close. We will give you an overview of the most important aspects of selling your home to get top dollar as well as guidelines on how to manage the process from negotiations to a successful on-time closing.

If the inventory is low, why shouldn’t I try and sell my home myself and save the commission? Statistically sellers going it alone rarely get top dollar for their property. All you are doing is allowing unqualified strangers into your home who expect a deal because they know you are saving the commission. Realtors thoroughly qualify their buyers; they will not show homes to just anyone. Their buyers must have cash and/or a bona fide pre-approval. MAY 2015 SALES, HOLLYWOOD, FL Subdivision

Below is a sampling of some of closed sales here in Hollywood sales for the previous month. Note two sales in Hollywood Hills. “PRICE IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME” is all-important. Buyers are willing to pay market value for what they want. It is not necessary to overprice. The Hollywood Hills sales are a powerful example. Two homes sold for 350K; one was on the market for 773 days (starting at $424,900) and sold for $30,000 less than their final list price of 380K while the other was on the market for 22 days and sold for within 3% of list price.

3850 Washington Street, Suite 1016, Hollywood, FL 33021 cindy@ATeamFlorida.com brian@ATeamFlorida.com

The one major factor that has changed the face of the industry over the past 10 years is THE INTERNET. Buyers are now more educated about local market values than ever before; they study the sales and know exactly what homes sell for. Again, in the Hollywood May Sales, note how many sold for ABOVE list price. When buyers find a home they love, they pay what it is worth. If you overprice, you greatly reduce the number of buyers who may fall in love with your home. When you price right, you sell quickly. Even if you underprice, you will still get market value for your home.

Want to find out how the market determines the list price of your home? What a home sells for can be different from what a home is worth. There are four other important masteries that can make your home sell for over market value. Contact us. We offer home enhancement skills, marketing knowledge, marketing expertise and negotiating skills. A Team Florida goes over and above to get you what you want.

Find out why WE PAY for a professional home inspection before we list your home. From code violations, open permits or unpermitted remodels, our expert business partners will help you navigate any and all issues. You probably have more questions than those addressed here.
