No Bones about It “Dog Dayz of Summer” is a Hit in Hallandale Beach By Beverly Perkins
B
ack by popular demand by humans and four-legged friends alike, Hallandale Beach opens the seasonal program, “Dog Dayz of Summer”, again this year. City residents and non-residents are encouraged to bring their furry-faced loved ones out for some twilight time in the surf and on the sand. The City of Hallandale Beach created the canine friendly event based on the phrase, “Dog Days of Summer”. The well-known expression used to describe the hottest days and the sultry heat of the season, actually refers to the dog star, Sirius, and its position in the heavens. However, many still use the term to describe the South Florida summer months which is why it’s a “paws” itively perfect name for the event. During the day dogs are prohibited from the beaches, but this specific event allows dogs to enjoy a dip in the Atlantic on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month from Memorial Day through August at South City Beach Park, 1870 S. Ocean Drive, Hallandale Beach from 6:00-8:00pm. Certain rules and regulations do apply: ▸▸ Participants are limited to one dog per owner. ▸▸ Dogs must have current rabies tag.
▸▸ Dogs must be under control of owner at all times. ▸▸ Owner is responsible for waste cleanup. ▸▸ Unruly and aggressive dogs may be asked to leave. Parking is available at the park. However, dogs are not allowed in the park, so owners must use the north sidewalk for access to the beach. The daily fee is $5 for residents and $10 for non-residents. Summer passes are also available at $15 for residents and $30 for nonresidents. Fees must be paid in cash on-site or passes may be purchased prior to each event at the Cultural Community Center located at 410 SE Third Street, Hallandale Beach. The City encourages animal lovers to come out and appreciate the “ruff” South Florida lifestyle. Just be sure to bring a doggie bag to help keep the beaches clean. For more information on Dog Dayz of Summer, visit www.hallandalebeach. org or call 954-457-1452. South City Beach Park – 1870 S. Ocean Drive Hallandale Beach – 6:00-8:00pm – DAILY FEE: $5 resident / $10 non-resident per dog - SUMMER PASS: $15
No Bluffing…The Jeff Conine Celebrity Poker Classic Promises Fun & Philanthropy By Beverly Perkins
T
he 5th Annual “Jeff Conine Celebrity Poker Classic” raises money to assist families of patients at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH). This year’s fundraiser will be held on Monday, July 11th at the Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park beginning at 5:30pm. All funds raised will benefit the Conine Clubhouse, a home away from home, where families with children undergoing hospital treatment can stay free of charge. The clubhouse named in honor of World Series champion Jeff Conine and his family provides a comfortable and nurturing environment for families during their difficult and stressful time. The event is hosted by “Mr. Marlin,” Jeff Conine, and his wife, Cindy, and features a full evening of casino action for players and guests. The Isle Poker Room, one of the top in the state of Florida, will host 300+ players vying for the first place prize of $10,000 cash. Other prizes will include vacation and hotel packages, jewelry, and cash totaling more than $20,000. Celebrity guests from the worlds of sports and entertainment are expected to attend and play. The evening begins with a welcome reception (5:30 p.m.) at Farraddays Steak House that includes the celebrities, a premium open bar, gourmet hors d’oeuvres, live music and more. There will also be a silent auction of unique items from the worlds of sports and entertainment prior to the tournament beginning at 7:00 p.m. A $250 donation ($300 after July 1) reserves a seat for poker and entry to the welcome reception. Those not playing poker can

purchase admission for $75. Proceeds from the event help underwrite costs at the Conine Clubhouse, which has provided free lodging to nearly 10,000 families that have had a child hospitalized at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. $105,000 was raised at the 2015 event. “Cindy and I stayed at the clubhouse when our son was younger and know firsthand the importance of having a place that is close to the hospital,” said Conine. Photo: Fortson Photography “It provides all the amenities of a three-star hotel but, more importantly, gives families a temporary place to call home come when they need it most.” Sponsors include the Isle Casino, which underwrites the majority of the cost to present the event, allowing the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation to maximize the fundraising opportunity. Additional support comes from Steve and Valerie Zaffos, PNC Bank, and Transamerica Retirement Solutions. Player participation for poker is limited, with registration taking place at CONINEPOKERCLASSIC.ORG. Event sponsorship, which includes seats in the poker tournament and admission to the VIP Reception, is also available on the website. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Nurses Honored with National Daisy Award By Beverly Perkins
I
t was a tough decision with hundreds of nominations submitted by the community thanking Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital nurses, but a small group was finally chosen to receive the prestigious “Daisy Award”. The award was given to those devoted healthcare professionals during National Nurses Week (May 6-12). Each year The National Daisy Foundation honors those with extraordinary dedication and compassion to their patients and their families. The honorees were selected from nominations that were submitted by patients and their families, co-workers, community members and healthcare representatives. The selections were finalized by the Daisy Dream Team at JDCH, a 15-member board of registered nurses, with RN4 titles, who serve at the bedside of patients and lead as clinical experts in their respective fields at JDCH. At Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH) ten nurses were honored with the “Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses,” which highlights the “extraordinary” touch they provide day in and day out to patients and their families. The honorees were recently invited to a celebration at JDCH led by Tena Barnes-Carraher, Co-founder, Vice President Communications & Resources, Southeast Regional Program Director of the DAISY Foundation. The JDCH nurses honored
include: Helen Convis, Monique Hewitt, Sheldon Joynt, Denise Killoran, Jodie Kolipinski, Anastasia Pagones, Katie Patrick, Anne Ruhlin, Anastasia Pagones and Rebekah Youngdahl. The Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses recognizes the special work that nurses do every day and whose relationships with patients and families demonstrate qualities such as compassion, skill, patient safety, and innovation. It was created by
the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 of complications of the auto-immune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) in 1999. Since its inception, more than 2,100 hospitals nationwide and internationally have joined the foundation in honoring nurses. ALEXANDER FIDELMAN, CCHt HYPNOTHERAPY PRACTICE
What Is Hypnosis or How to Befriend Your Subconscious Mind For many people hypnosis is something esoteric, strange and even scary. “Will you make me cluck like chicken?”, some people ask. “Not unless you want to”. In hypnosis you are always in control. You never say or do anything that goes against your ethics and life principles. “Is hypnosis real then?”, they would continue asking. Yes it is. As real as a state of trance which is a natural God given gift. Have you ever read a book and found yourself fully engrossed in those pages? Or watched a movie and began to feel one with a character? You lose a sense of time feeling clear, focused and in the flow. Athletes call this state “in the zone”. The critical faculty of the mind is off to the side, the inner chatter is gone, your conscious and subconscious minds are one and your body’s performing at its optimal level.
As a certified clinical hypnotherapist I simply utilize this natural state to help clients reach their goals. They let go of hurt, fears and anxious feelings. Anger and guilt are replaced with forgiveness and love. You experience deep transformation and reclaim clarity and confidence. High self esteem, focus and motivation become natural. You reach the state of bliss. In my practice I use various methods of regression to the cause as well as other modalities to ensure we not only deal with the symptoms but go deeper to the very roots and reach deep transformation within.

Soffer Health Institute Delivers South Florida’s Finest Cardiovascular and Vein Care A division of the Soffer Health Institute
Feature Story
By Beverly Perkins
T
he Soffer Health Institute created facilities to give their patients the finest preventative treatment that the world has to offer in addition to their cutting-edge evaluation and disease prevention methods. Regardless if one needs a cardiologist, vein treatments, primary care physician, a weight loss program, allergy solutions and/or senior care, Soffer Health Institute offers the highest quality medical services to suit all their patients’ needs.
Dr. Ariel Soffer, MD, FACC, is a board certified cardiologist and director of the Soffer Health Institute in Aventura, where he and a dedicated team of physicians and nurses provide truly state-of-the-art cardiovascular and vein care. He graduated from the University of Miami School of Medicine in 1990. After serving as a chief of cardiology and teaching in two local medical school programs, he launched his private practice in 1997. Dr. Soffer has also been honored to have a weekly segment as the Chief Medical Expert for WPLG Local 10 News with a newscast called “Dr. Soffer’s Second Opinion”. Dr. Ariel Soffer, MD, FACC took the time to answer some frequently asked questions about his practice.
What makes Soffer Vein & Vascular, a division of the Soffer Health Institute, different? As a cardiovascular specialist for almost
20 years, I am proud to have a staff that has the experience and expertise to treat all circulationrelated issues for our patients. Our philosophy is to use the least invasive techniques. We call it the “LIT method” and we strive to treat our patients like family. I have dedicated my life to improving the quality of my patients’ lives.
I have worked hard to obtain the skill set and tools necessary to diagnose and personally tend to their heart, artery and venous issues. Soffer Vein & Vascular is a nationally recognized center of excellence for the leading laser technology

provider, and, right in our office, we train other physicians on the most cutting edge technology in treating vein disorders. I enjoy lecturing all over the world on the heart-vein connection and treatment modalities. In the past year, I have lectured at cardiology and vein conferences in Chicago, Orlando, New Orleans, Los Angeles and Boston.
Is there a vein treatment that does not use needles and does not require surgery? Yes,
one of the latest cutting edge tools that we use at Soffer Vein & Vascular is the new Cutera Excel V laser that treats spider veins on the face and legs. The Excel V uses quick pulses of light energy at varying frequencies to zap the small veins without affecting the surrounding tissue. The treatment is virtually painless and the results have been terrific for both the veins on the face and legs. Most of our patients who are candidates for this treatment see significant improvement in their treated veins within two to six weeks of treatment.
Could varicose veins be more than a cosmetic issue? In about 50% of the cases, cosmetic vein issues are often a sign of treatable underlying circulation issues. Many people do not know, however, that congestive heart failure and varicose veins are often mistaken for one another. The leg swelling that is often considered to be a problem with the heart or blood pressure is often just veins underneath the skin that have failed to work properly. With a proper diagnosis, the patient can literally be cured in minutes and avoid years of ineffective drug treatments that ultimately prove ineffective in these situations. Symptoms often associated with vein disease include leg pain, discoloration, heaviness, swelling, throbbing, itching, restless leg syndrome, cramping, burning and fatigue.
Is it okay to postpone treatment? Varicose
vein disease is a progressive disease. If left untreated, it will only get worse and will require more extensive treatment in the future.
Once veins are treated, do they come back? When treatment is done by a vein

specialist most patients get excellent results. By treating the feeder veins we close the source of the problem and lessen the chance of recurrence.
Can vein treatment improve your circulation? Yes, in addition to making your legs look
cosmetically better, the treatment can actually improve your circulation so that you have healthier legs as well. While vein symptoms often manifest themselves cosmetically, they can be and are often part of a greater circulatory problem that only an experienced physician should diagnose and treat.
How can I get the Soffer Vein Institute to evaluate me? We accept most insurance and
offer complementary initial consultations. We have also developed a free smartphone app available in the App Store that will allow you to take a picture of your veins and send it to us for a virtual doctor visit. This app was developed by Soffer Vein & Vascular and is used all over the world to help diagnose and treat disease.
Other than vein valves, what other cardiovascular valves do you have experience with? As a cardiovascular specialist, I was
trained in all valves of the circulatory system. However, I have had a special interest in a disorder known as mitral valve prolapse syndrome (MVP). MVP, occurring mainly in women, is often underdiagnosed and undertreated. I have written a book entitled Mitral Valve Prolapse: A Comprehensive Patient’s Guide to a Happier and Healthier Life, which is available on Amazon.com. It is already in its second edition. Readers of the book from all over the globe quite often end up visiting our center for a consultation.

Louder Than a Bomb Florida – Hollywood/Hallandale Schools Represented at This Year’s Competition SECTION news school HEAD

esignated the “Super Bowl of Poetry”, Louder Than a Bomb Florida scored plenty of fans at its second annual festival. The South Florida community was able to observe the top talented youth poets in the state during the anticipated event hosted by the Jason Taylor Foundation at Nova Southeastern University this past spring. The Jason Taylor Foundation arts and education project features a friendly spoken-word competition between schoolbased poetry teams representing local high schools from Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and St. Lucie counties. This year Hollywood Hills, McArthur and Hallandale High School students came out to exhibit talent from their respective schools. The festival consisted of multiple workshops, exhibits, poetry bouts and concluded with the crowning of Florida’s top youth poetry team. The most critical component, however, is the yearround, meaningful instruction inside the classroom and after-school clubs, with teachers and teaching artists who create and facilitate a safe space for individual and collective expression. “We believe very strongly in not only educating the young people we serve, but also in empowering them to develop their voice,” said Jason Taylor. “Our bluapple Poetry Network has provided these kids with the vehicle to share their stories and to have them validated by their peers and adults alike, from schools and neighbor-
hoods across the state. Louder Than a Bomb Florida only amplifies their powerful, raw truth and does so by combining the art of the spoken word with a sports-like atmosphere that is having a transformational effect on our community.” The winning team was Boca Raton Community High School. They will go on to Chicago to participate in the Young Chicago Authors “Write to the City” summer writing camp in July. However, Jason Taylor was so impressed with all 4 teams in the finals he announced that his foundation will send all of them to Chicago. The winning individual poet was Desiray Baptiste from Miramar High School. Desiray also teamed with Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam to win the inaugural Mayor Slam. Since founding the bluapple Poetry Network with actor and poet Omari Hardwick in 2012, the Foundation has helped more than 60 schools activate this program, with more than 1,000 participants inspiring their communities with poetry. Funding from Nova Southeastern University, UPS and a host of other community partners has assisted the Jason Taylor Foundation support the schools’ efforts by providing year-round, in-class and after-school instruction, which culminated this 12-day festival.

What is Gynecomastia? section ask the expert head
By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

T
he term comes from the Greek words “gyne” (meaning “woman”) and “mastos” (meaning “breast”). In practical terms, this means abnormally large breasts on men. The condition is relatively common in adolescent boys, and 90% of the time symptoms disappear in a matter of months, or as adolescence wanes a few years later. But the remaining 10% are burdened with a social handicap that can cause shame, lowered self-esteem and confidence. There are many potential causes, including puberty, steroid abuse, obesity, marijuana use, side effects of medicine, and certain genetic diseases. Gynecomastia can be emotionally devastating. A man or boy with gynecomastia struggles with anxiety over such simple acts as taking off his shirt at the beach. In cases of obesity, weight loss can alter the gynecomastic condition, but for many it may not totally eliminate it. For all other causes, surgery is the only known physical remedy, and often the best solution. Once the contour of the chest is restored to normal, the patient can begin to feel more confident and self-assured with his physical body image. Plastic surgery to correct gynecomastia is technically called reduction mammaplasty and reduces breast size, flattening and enhancing the chest before AFTER contours. In severe cases of gynecoDr. Messa’s patient mastia, the weight of excess breast tissue may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). In these cases the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved and excess skin may be reduced. The procedure can be performed under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia depending on each individual’s medical condition. In cases where gynecomastia is primarily the result of excess fatty tissue, liposuction techniques alone may be used. There are various liposuction techniques that may be used; the technique most appropriate in your case will be defined prior to your procedure. Excision techniques are recommended where glandular breast tissue or excess skin must be removed to correct gynecomastia. Excision also is necessary if the areola will be reduced, or the nipple repositioned to a more natural male contour. Incision patterns vary depending on the specific conditions and surgical preference. Sometimes gynecomastia is treated with both liposuction and excision. Any surgical treatment to correct gynecomastia will require incisions. While most incision lines are concealed within natural contours, some may be visible and are a necessary result of breast reduction surgery. After surgery, dressings or bandages will be applied to your incisions and an elastic bandage or support garment may be used to minimize swelling and support your new chest contour as it heals. The procedure duration is typically one to two hours and most men are able to return to work within 4 to 5 days depending on how much lifting is required. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and Dr. Messa has achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures.
