s we enter the second month of summer vacation, and the novelty of days with no school has worn off, many parents (myself included) are hearing the familiar phrase: “What are we doing today?” Fortunately, we live in a community where there are many great things to do all summer long. nce again, local Hollywood EcoArtist, Alissa Alfonso, completed another photo shoot at the Humane Society of Broward County (HSBC). This month the talented designer wanted to pay tribute to Purina®, the leading U.S. pet care company, by including them in her stylized photoshoot. The dogs and cats at the Humane Society of Broward County are fortunate to benefit from the partnership with the acclaimed pet food giant, Purina®. The nutritious pet food is fed to the shelter animals daily, therefore many bags are being used. The HSBC shelter staff saved these empty bags of pet food and gave them to Alfonso, who then created oversized upcycled mushrooms to include into her fairy tale backdrop. Alfonso photographed seventeen canines in the storybook setting. The dogs were not camera shy as they loved the scented recycled mushrooms which smelled like their favorite foods. After the dogs had their moment
to shine it was time to work with the smaller creatures. Two cats, twelve kittens and five rabbits had the opportunity to wander through the beautiful hand painted picturesque forest also filled with mushrooms. Best-Selling Author Brad Meltzer Honored at Art and Culture Center Fundraiser By Beverly Perkins
I
t was an exciting evening at the 19th Annual Cuisine for Art fundraiser held in May at Hollywood’s Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood presented the event which featured elected government officials and community leaders serving as celebrity waiters. All funds raised benefit the Center’s exhibition and education programming. Each year the event has an honoree, and this year’s event honored #1 New York Times best-selling author Brad Meltzer. Meltzer is known for his fictional thrillers like The President’s Shadow and non-fiction like History Decoded. He was named by the Hollywood Reporter as one of Hollywood’s 25 Most Powerful Authors. He is also the author of a series of illustrated children’s books, comics and the host of Brad Meltzer’s Lost History and Brad Meltzer’s Decoded on the History Channel. A large crowd of over 300 attended the sold out affair which started with a cocktail reception and silent auction, followed by a three-course dinner with the “March of Celebrity Waiters” and then concluded with live entertainment and a live auction. Local 10 news anchor Jacey Birch and Local 10 meteorologist Trent Aric returned again this year to emcee the festivities. Live musical entertainment included teenage rock-cello siblings Emil and Dariel, who are best known for their performance on America’s Got for Talent; 15-year-old singer and actress Julia Dale; DJ Slim Rok of Rock With U Entertainment; and awardwinning multimedia artist Daniel Pontet known for creating a work of art using his feet to the sound of music during an enthusiastic live performance. Attendees got to bid on auction items such as a ride aboard the world famous Goodyear Blimp and

D
ecades ago, Ben W. Butler was an integral part of building Hollywood. He worked alongside Joseph W. Young and helped build the iconic Hollywood Hotel which was completed in 1922. After the real estate bust he went on to the business of agriculture where he sold heifers, started a dairy herd and raised chickens. In the late 1930s, Butler purchased a small wooden house and acquired 5 acres to grow his new endeavor. He went on to remodel the property and expanded the home using local oolitic limestone, which he also encased the exposed portions of the older structure. The family called the finished structure the Rock House. The enterprising individual dug “coral rock” from a limestone quarry to sell to local builders, started a trailer park called Okomo Park and furthermore built a new barn on land which later formed Topeekeegee Yugnee (TY) Park. The Butler House (aka The Coral Rock House) is one of a small number of coral rock houses that remain in Broward County. The City proposed to preserve and maintain the house as a historically significant structure located within the City. They have hired a preservation consultant to conduct research and complete a Historic Designation Report for the Coral Rock House. The Hollywood Historical Society is extremely pleased that the Hollywood Historic Preservation Board has begun a Preliminary Review for Local Designation of the Butler Coral Rock House located on the property north of Taft Street and east of the CSX railway, which was the Okomo Trailer Park in Hollywood. “We are very optimistic about the April meeting, and we are confident that the City is doing the right thing,” says Karen Albertson, Hollywood Historical Society President. “The fact that it may become a museum and a place for our events is really wonderful for our city.” The joint effort between the City of Hollywood Preservation Board, The Hollywood Historical Society, Friends of Hollywood and Hollywood residents is how the City is able to preserve the past to share with future generations.

Much More Than a Day at the Races – 4th Annual Derby Day Raises Funds for Crockett Foundation By Beverly Perkins

ore than 300 guests, including local notables, dignitaries, celebrities and of course, the Crockett Foundation founders and former NFL Players Henri and Zack Crockett attended the 4th Annual Derby Days Preakness Party at Sport of King Theater located at Gulfstream Park. The event, hosted by the Crockett Foundation, raised a total of $83,500 to benefit the Crockett Foundation’s youth mentoring and tutorial programs. Among these guests was former Florida State University Head Coach Bobby Bowden. Bowden was honored by Henri and Zack Crockett that evening for his leadership and dedication as their personal mentors throughout the years as well as his many accomplishments and contributions to Florida State University. The award presentation featured a short video with highlights of Bowden’s career. The program was introduced by Local 10 News Meteorologist and Florida State University Alumna, Jennifer Correa who served as the emcee for the evening. Guests also had the opportunity to hear from Crockett Foundation’s Executive Director, Eileen LaMarca who welcomed guests and shared the Foundation’s mission to help build character, develop leaders, and improve communities – one child at a time. Two students that are currently part of the Foundation’s after-school programs shared their experiences and how the Crockett Foundation has positively impacted their lives.

During the evening, guests enjoyed drinks, specialty food stations and desserts while they tuned in to watch Exaggerator pass Kentucky Derby champion Nyquist to win the 141st Preakness. The event also featured a silent auction and raffle prizes. Entertainment included DJ RBK sponsored by American Social and performances by the live band Hollywood. All proceeds from the event benefitted the Crockett Foundation’s youth mentoring and tutorial programs.

Some of the region’s biggest names in sports and entertainment attended The Acordis Call of The Game Dinner which drew more than 800 guests. The anticipated event benefited two of South Florida’s most recognized non-profit organizations- Lauren’s Kids and Dade Schools Athletic Foundation. Eric Reid and Tony Fiorentino, longtime Fox Sports Sun HEAT TV broadcasters, honored leading sports icons and philanthropic heroes for their achievements both on and off the playing fields at their annual dinner. The ballroom was transformed with the art of Romero Britto. Each table had a handPat Riley; Nikki Sapp & Erik Spoelstra painted electric guitar centerpiece painted by the famed Neo-pop artist which could be purchased as a keepsake. Johanna Gomez emceed the evening as sports legends received awards. owntown Hollywood is known as one of South Florida’s vibrant arts, music and entertainment districts. The calendar of events each month consists of classic car shows, outdoor concerts, art exhibits, cultural entertainment, charitable and many other family-friendly opportunities. One popular activity is the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project (DHMP) Walk. Launched by the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) in August of 2012, the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project is the largest walkable mural project in Broward County. The collection of curated outdoor murals by both local, national and internationally recognized artists is a key element in the CRA’s arts-focused initiative to enhance the diversity and vibrancy of Downtown Hollywood, Florida. Hollywood’s CRA was designated by the local government as the agency to provide the tools needed
to foster and support positive redevelopment. They have a big vision in mind that expands a decade from now. Their main goal is that Hollywood Beach becomes a world-class coastal destination, but still retains its beach town character and artsy vibe. The DHMP’s goal is to curate contemporary outdoor murals at key locations in Downtown Hollywood in an effort to enhance and enrich the existing cultural fabric of the community, thereby attracting more art related activities, businesses and events. The mural project adds a visual arts component to Mayor Peter Bober’s Live Music Initiative that kicked off with the debut of the ArtsPark Live!, a year-round free concert series at the ArtsPark at Young Circle amphitheater. Currently twenty-three artists have participated,

making this Broward’s largest exterior contemporary art mural project. Project Manager Jill C. Weisberg got her start in public art in 2008 as a designer and project manager working with an arts collective that helped make Miami’s Wynwood arts district one of the largest concentrations of international street art in the world. She is responsible for curating the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project since its inception in 2012, and has been instrumental in cultivating Downtown Hollywood as an arts hub. “I am a Hollywood native and I absolutely love the eclectic and unique nature of my hometown”, says Weisberg. “DHMP has added an energy to Downtown Hollywood that was not there before, making it a much more exciting and interesting place to visit.” Weisberg is responsible for scouting diverse talent, locally, nationally and internationally and bringing professional experienced artists to South Florida. Your digestive system is a complex and extensive part of the body. It starts at your mouth, down your esophagus to your stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, and ends at your anus. It’s responsible for helping your body absorb essential nutrients and then getting rid of the waste, which are very important functions. Not only will you be more comfortable once you’ve gotten to the source of the issue, more importantly, early diagnosis and treatment can reduce damage to your esophagus and GI tract.
EUS is very useful in helping physicians evaluate cancers or other tumors of the stomach, esophagus, pancreas, colon, liver, gall bladder, digestive tract and rectum, as well as to plan the most effective treatment strategies. It can even provide good images of smaller masses that may not be detected using other technology. And, preliminary results are available immediately, allowing for timely staging and treatment of gastrointestinal cancers. In fact, in the past 5 years EUS has become utilized more and more in this capacity.

According to Cleveland Clinic Florida gastroenterologist Ronnie Pimentel, MD, “the EUS procedure is typically performed in an outpatient setting, and usually takes close to 45 minutes.” He adds that “patients do not experience discomfort during the procedure, and are able to go home the same day.”
How EUS works EUS is much like a regular endoscopy procedure in that a probe is inserted down the esophagus and into the stomach.
The difference, however, is that the probe’s tip has an ultrasound camera on it that provides a very clear view of the stomach and nearby organs. By getting so close to the organs, EUS allows doctors to take a biopsy through the stomach wall, by removing a small amount of tissue for testing. Getting a biopsy this way is more comfortable for patients than a traditional needle biopsy through the skin, and more critical is the fact that it reduces the risk of “seeding,” or spreading the tumor through the skin or to other parts of the body. Dr. Pimentel states that, “another important use for EUS is to perform nerve blocks for severe pain in cancer patients. We also can insert markers (known as fiducials) to guide future radiation treatments so that they target only the tumor, not the healthy tissue around it.” In addition, EUS is sometimes used to help find answers for patients with abdominal pain that doctors have been unable to explain.

Driftwood Middle School Students Have Big Goals

t was a great way to end the school year at Driftwood Middle School with a visit from the Florida Panthers Alumni and Panthers Street Cats. The morning began with a kickoff assembly by Principal Williams which was followed by Hockey Scholar and Physical Education classes concluding with a Hockey Scholar event including Billy Lindsay, Florida Panthers Alumni, Florida Panthers Mascot, Stanley C. Panther and the Florida Panthers Street Cats Community Initiative team. The Florida Panthers teamed up with the National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) to bring the NHL and NHLPA Future Goals program to schools across the region of South Florida. Driftwood Middle School students are actively involved using the Future Goals program. The program, developed by Everfi, encourages a digital learning initiative which will help students build their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills using the fast-paced exciting game of hockey as a learning vehicle. “I attended the Ever Fi Hockey Scholar Training in February and knew Driftwood Middle School had to implement this program throughout all of our electives,” says Linda Gancitano, 7th grade Driftwood Middle School Physical Education Teacher. “There are modules for every grade level. The 8th grade
Physical Education class teaches the Hockey Scholar program, while 7th grade teaches the NFL Character Education Playbook and the 6th grade learns money management through a program called Vault.” This no cost cutting-edge curriculum recently launched Hockey Scholar as part of the Future Goals program. This new course utilizes an exploratory learning approach, exposing students to foundational STEM concepts, scientific thinking and data/graphical analysis through real-life STEM applications. The overall goal is to spark student interest in STEM topics and help students become college-ready, career-ready and life-ready as they prepare to be innovators and leaders of tomorrow. The Driftwood Cardinals conducted Future Goals – Hockey Scholar labs and activities in their science classes while students in physical education developed hockey skills through hands-on clinic drills, and those in elective classes learned STEM by completing modules in Hockey Scholar on computers. Jennifer Hoover, 8th grade Physical Education Teacher says, “It’s a great way to incorporate science, math and technology into the Physical Education Curriculum and still keep the integrity of sports and fitness.”
Hello Hollywood! Cameron Diaz Skypes Bethune Elementary Students By Beverly Perkins

ward-winning actress Cameron Diaz adopted Bethune Elementary and lends her support and encouragement throughout the school year as part of the Turnaround Arts program. Due to Cameron Diaz’s busy schedule, she unfortunately could not make it to the Turnaround Arts School for a personal visit. However, modern day technology allowed her to speak with the students via an interactive Skype call.
Bethune, a magnet art school, was competitively selected by local partners to be a participant in Turnaround Arts. The President’s Committee, in coordination with the White House, the U.S. Department of Education and several foundations bring arts education programming and resources to high-poverty elementary and middle schools across the country through this national program. Results have shown that Turnaround Arts strengthened school reform efforts, boosted academic achievement and increased student engagement in schools facing extremely difficult educational challenges in the country. There are currently 50 Turnaround Arts schools in 27 school districts and 14 states and the District of Columbia. Besides receiving art supplies, materials, musical instruments, in-school professional development, training and more, each selected school is designated a

high-profile artist. This individual works with the school over the length of the program to increase student and community engagement and promote local visibility for the school. Familiar names such as Paula Abdul, Marc Anthony, Macy Gray, Sarah Jessica Parker, Russell Simmons, Forest Whitaker, Josh Groban and Sir Elton John are just a few of the talented artists that can be found on the extensive list of participants who have “adopted” a school. The 2nd-5th grade Bethune Elementary students were able to perform parts of their upcoming Shrek Jr. production for the actress best known for her voice as Princess Fiona in the Dreamworks motion picture. The students then had the opportunity to speak with Cameron Diaz. The curious little actors asked questions such as how many movies she made to challenges she encountered and what it was like to play an animated character vs. a real-life one. Diaz laughed and cried as she interacted with this ambitious bunch. She provided acting tips as well as useful advice. She instructed the children to discover their passion in their hearts not to just be famous, but to use learning as a way to improve their futures. Hollywood Park Elementary Student is Doing Her Part to Preserve the Planet By Beverly Perkins

The metrics of this category include Awareness and Involvement, Current Professional Development/ Affiliation, Instructional Soundness/ Creativity and Skill Building. Yamila Diaz, a Hollywood Park Elementary fifth grader, was nominated by her teacher Eileen Santiago. This sweet girl has been one of Santiago’s students for three years in the Intellectual Disabilities cluster. “Working with Yamila has been a complete pleasure for me,” says Santiago. “Besides her contagious laugh and the ability to make everyone smile, she has taken a huge interest in taking care of her classroom and being Eco-friendly.” Yamila became extremely aware of the importance of recycling and keeping the Earth clean. She is always exhibiting good citizenship by cleaning her area and placing materials in the recycling bin as well as having extreme motivation for taking care of the school garden. As a participant in the City of Hollywood’s “Go Green” event, Yamila created various crafts with recycled materials and also planted seeds in recycled milk boxes from the cafeteria to give away at the event. “School isn’t just about academics anymore, we need to take time to teach our children life skills and how to take care of their environment and world,” says Hollywood Park Principal Mari Menendez. “I am proud of Yamila and her efforts to make her world a greener place!”

One big ceremony this year was the P3 EcoChallenge Awards Ceremony held at the Long Key Nature Center in Davie. Students from around the county were nominated for the special award. The Broward P3 Eco-Challenge (Preserving our Planet for Posterity) is a multi-divisional and organizational effort between Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), Broward County Environmental Planning and Community Resilience Division and the Environmental Conservation Organization. Members from these organizations formed a P3 committee to create and implement the initiative to recognize and reward those schools, teachers, students, administrators and non-instructional individuals for their efforts to learn about and to administer environmentally sustainable measures and green actions within their schools and communities. The P3 School Challenge and the P3 Stewardship Recognition are two areas of recognition. The school challenge must show the demonstration of participation in or implementation of different sustainability metrics based on a rubric composed of six comprehensive categories: School Grounds Enhancement, School Sustainability, Curriculum Integration, Community Involvement, Administrative Support and Innovation. A
s the summer sun heats up in South Florida, it’s important to protect your skin as much as possible. The harmful UVA and UVB rays from sun exposure accelerate the aging process in the skin resulting in hyperpigmentation, increased wrinkles, and most importantly, increased incidence of skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common cancer with more cases diagnosed each year in the United States than all other cancers combined. There are some misconceptions regarding sun exposure and skin cancer. You can’t get a sunburn on a cloudy day. Clouds only block some of the harmful ultraviolet rays, so a sunburn is still possible. You can’t get skin cancer where the sun doesn’t shine. Skin cancer can appear anywhere on the body, including the hands and feet. Skin cancer only affects light-skinned people. Those who are fair, are at increased risk, but anyone can get skin cancer. Using a tanning bed occasionally is safe. The United States Department of Health and Human Services and World Health Organization have classified a tanning bed as a carcinogen and research suggests that even one session may increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Some sun exposure is essential to Vitamin D metabolism; however, excessive exposure or unprotected exposure can be very harmful. Sunscreen is the obvious first step in protecting your skin. Broad spectrum is best. The FDA requires sunscreen manufacturers to prove that sunscreens protect against ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which are the primary cause of sunburn as well as Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, which can cause premature aging of the skin. Both types of rays have been associated with the development of skin cancer. Choose SPF, or sun protective factor, of 15 or greater. Sunscreen must be applied in adequate amounts to achieve the SPF rating on the label. The recommended amount is 2 mg./cm² – roughly 1 shot glass or 2 tablespoons worth of sunscreen for face and body. Patients who are concerned about obtaining enough sun exposure to make Vitamin D should be aware that current research indicates that 15 minutes of unprotected sun exposure to the midday sun, 3 times a week, is sufficient to synthesize enough Vitamin D to meet our body’s needs. Additionally, remember to protect lips, wear sunglasses with UV protection and wear a wide-brimmed hat. Finally, it is important to get your skin checked periodically by a board certified physician. Environmental Day: Provides overview of our environment assets and the make-up of urbans communities; how the natural environment shapes people and how people shape the environment. Media Day: Conveys to class participants the critical need for leaders to work effectively with the media as well as for leaders to recognize media’s challenges in this diverse, fast-changing market. Criminal Justice / County Government Day: Offers insight into the Broward County legal system and introduces participants to Broward elected officials to better understand county issues that would affect our South Florida communities. City Government / Business Development Day: Provides participants a clear perspective of our local government and the challenges they are facing. Help better understand the economy from top-level business and community leaders and highlights new and emerging industries driving our local economy. Tourism Day: Gives the participant an overall view of what Hollywood has to offer, a chance to get a behind-the-scene tour of the airport and the seaport to better understand the importance of the industry in our region.

hrough interactive session days Leadership Hollywood participants can view our community up close, work together and acquire a unique knowledge of resources and services available in Hollywood, Broward County and the State of Florida. Each scheduled program day provides a realistic forum to better understand the role and the impact these different sectors have on our community. All activities encourage class members’ involvement and participation. Also, by virtue of taking part in the various sessions, participants meet key members of the community, region and state, from city officials to county administrators to legislative leaders. This is an exceptional opportunity for participants to present their concerns and voice their questions - face-to-face. As a result of their participation in the program, Leadership Hollywood graduates acquire a solid understanding of the processes, opportunities and challenges in the community and undisputable edge when doing business in Hollywood. Alumni of our program have pursued their service to our community by serving as judges, mayors or commissioners and others have taken leadership roles in the governance of local non-profit organizations. Leadership Hollywood session XLI will kick–off Friday, October 14, 2016 at the Crowne Plaza Hollywood Beach followed by a second day of leadership skills at the end of the retreat and graduation will take place June of 2017. Program days usually start at 7:30 a.m. and end around 5:00 p.m. Program tuition is $1000 for Members of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and $1,500 for non-members.

Jaycee Hall Celebrates 50 Years By Beverly Perkins

The Jaycee Hall is used for all types of celebrations such as Weddings, Sweet Sixteens, Quinces and Baby Showers. Non-profit rentals include weekly meetings for Narcotics Anonymous, Girl Scouts, the monthly meeting for the Broward County Fair, plus many others. “Because of all of these events we need to keep up with the modernizing and upkeep of our building,” says Debra Gronvold, Executive Director for Jaycee Hall. “After 50 years it deserves some TLC and that is why we reached out to our community by having our Jaycee Hall Celebrates 50 Years event.” Proceeds from ad sales, ticket sales and sponsorships helped to build up funds to do the much needed improvements to the facility. he Greater Hollywood Jaycees and the Hollywood Jaycees Foundation recently celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Jaycee Hall. The celebration included a ribbon cutting ceremony, cocktail reception, and remembrances of what kind of impact Jaycee Hall has had through the years, on the Jaycees’ efforts to serve the community. The Greater Hollywood Jaycees have been on the forefront of community service, as well as personal and professional growth. The Chapter has developed countless leaders who continued on to play prominent roles in the community at every level locally, countywide and in the State Capital. Over the years, the Chapter has played an instrumental role in starting the Broward County Fair, developing Perry Airport and several local parks. Member efforts have benefitted countless charitable organizations, underprivileged families, and children. The Anniversary Celebration marked the kickoff of an ambitious $30,000 capital improvement campaign. The monies raised are needed for projects such as fill and grading of the currently sinking property behind the hall, complete bathroom renovations, and kitchen upgrades. The underlying idea is to make Jaycee Hall a facility the entire community can be proud of. May 21st was designated “Jaycee Hall Day” and Commissioner Kevin Biederman read the proclamation with the assistance of Vice Mayor Peter Hernandez, Commissioner Assef, Commissioner

More than 5,600 ice cream scoops were served at Gulfstream Park’s HäagenDazs shop to celebrate the national day this past spring making it one of the busiest locations in the country. Guests of all ages joined in the festivities and indulged in a free ice cream cone to beat the heat. In addition to the free scoops, attendees were treated to interactive games and dancing with a live DJ, a Frozen performance followed by a character Meet and Greet and free face painting for kids.
