In this issue you will find our Back to School Guide. We’ve put together a list of activities in our area to keep your kids busy after school with everything from dance classes and martial arts to tutoring programs and academic enrichment classes. The guide also includes local child care and preschool programs. Before that first day of school arrives, let’s have a few more days of summer fun with our loved ones. T

he City of Hollywood takes water conservation very seriously in a time when the urban population is growing and the demand for water is increasing. Each year rainfall has become more unpredictable, so managing water resources has become more important. Educating residents about water efficiency and managing water resources will help ensure that an adequate water supply is available. The City of Hollywood is a proud partner with the EPA WaterSense and a member of Broward County’s Water Partnership’s “Conservation Pays” program. These partnerships show the City’s commitment to protecting this most valuable resource. By creating awareness, the goal of saving water, saving the environment and saving money will be achieved. It’s important for Hollywood residents to know the ordinance in place for outdoor landscape irrigation. This water accounts for 50% of household water usage. The restrictions must be followed especially in times when there are periods of water shortage. Residences and businesses with ODD-numbered street addresses may only water their landscapes on Wednesdays and/or Saturdays before 10:00am or after 4:00pm. Residences and businesses with EVEN-numbered street addresses, no street address, or those who irrigate both even and odd addresses within the same zones (which may include multi-family units and homeowners associations) may

only water their landscapes on Thursdays and/or Sundays before 10:00am or after 4:00pm. Qualified Hollywood residents are also able to participate in the Single-Family Toilet Rebate Program. The goal is to replace all toilets that were made before 1994. These older toilets use an excessive amount of water (three or more gallons) per flush. The incentive for residential utility customers who replace these toilets with a WaterSense certified High Efficiency Toilets (HETs) one are credits up to $100 per toilet on their water utility bill. There is also the Multi-Family Toilet Rebate Program which is designed for multi-family properties such as apartments, duplexes, condominiums and townhomes. Any of these types of properties built in or before 1992 and served by a single master meter are eligible to participate. The goal is to give rebates to property owners who replace the older inefficient models and install the newer WaterSense high efficiency ones. Toilets can account for 30-35% of household water use. A newer HET model uses less than 1.28 gallons per flush or less. Applying for the rebate saves residents on their utility bill again and again and ultimately pays for the cost of the newer High Efficiency Toilet. Conservation does pay. For specific guidelines, application and to see if you or your property qualify visit www.hollywoodfl.org or call 954-921-3579.

It’s Time for a Night Out on The Town – Your Town By Beverly Perkins

E

veryone is invited to the 32nd Annual National Night Out Celebration on Tuesday, August 4th. It is encouraged that community residents participate in this nationwide event that has been bringing neighbors and community officers together since its inception in 1984. An estimated 30 million plus people take part in this effort to increase awareness about police programs, drug prevention, town and neighborhood watch and other anti-crime endeavors. The first Tuesday in August has been designated as the official “National Night Out” across the nation in all communities. The event is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) in the United States and Canada. This is the nation’s premiere non-profit crime prevention organization dedicated to the promotion and development of crime prevention in these local communities. NATW is a network of law enforcement agencies, neighborhood watch groups, civic groups, state and regional crime prevention associations and concerned citizens. Due to the ambitious collaboration of these groups, NATW was able to launch this annual National Night Out campaign which promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to create a cohesive effort making neighborhoods safer and better places to live.

The purpose is to enhance the relationship between neighbors and community officials by bringing back a sense of community in a time when citizens can no longer leave their doors unlocked. “National Night Out” provides such an opportunity. These events are typically organized by block watches, non-profit organizations, companies and police departments. They range from simple street gatherings with BBQ and pot-luck dishes to full-blown festivals with live music, food trucks and various entertainment. Many include safety demonstrations, seminars and youth events along with the visit of local emergency personnel. The Hollywood Police command staff and personal, neighborhood team leaders, police officers, specialized units, crime prevention specialists, homeless program coordinators, mobile patrol, code enforcement officers and even “McGruff the Crime Dog” want to meet the residents in the community and let criminals know that they are organized and fighting back. To register for a National Night Out Block Party, please call the Community & Media Relations Division with your information at (954) 967-4371. *October 6th is the alternate day if weather is an issue.

Hallandale Beach Participates in The World’s Largest Swim Lesson SECTION HEAD Community News

By Beverly Perkins

T

he nation’s top water safety and training organizations joined forces with community waterparks, pools and other aquatic facilities to create awareness around the globe on swim safety to prevent drowning. In order to make a big splash about this “World’s Largest Swimming Lesson Day”, an attempt to break a Guinness World Record was the challenge across the country. Hallandale’s very own aquatics supervisor, Elise Silsby ran the event with 24 children from the Foster Park Summer Camp. These 6-12 year olds were each taught a 30 minute lesson by the City of Hallandale Beach Aquatic Division Water Safety Instructors. There was no cost to the participants as the City covered the registration fee to host the event at the BF James Pool. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental, unintended, injury-related death of children ages 1-14. Swimming instruction is a life-saving skill for children and a vital tool in prevention. The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ (WLSL) was created to serve as a platform to assist local community aquatic facilities and national, regional and statewide water safety and drowning organizations to work together for the cause on such a large level. As part of the attempt to beat the world record, all host locations managed and reported their efforts to the WLSL. All lessons needed to take place on Thursday, June 18th at 10am to qualify for the world record. Each lesson had to be 30 minutes and of the same curriculum which was created by a team of leading water safety and swim instruction professionals.

The 30 minute lesson plan included event guidelines, lesson objectives and basic safety instruction. It started with an overall review of pool rules and sun safety. It then was followed by examples of safe entry into the water and the dangers of shallow and deep water. Students were then taught how to submerge their faces and hold their breath underwater. This was done by blowing bubbles and picking up objects under water. Mandatory floating skills were also learned as well as basic strokes such as alternating arm, front crawl and front glide, and kicking. The purpose of the event was to bring attention and generate awareness about the vital importance of teaching children to swim to help prevent drowning. For more information on water safety and drowning prevention visit www.cdc.gov/safechild/NAP/overviews/drowning.html or www.cdc.gov/homeandrecreationalsafety/water-safety/waterinjuries-factsheet.html

Emmy Award–Winning Artist Helps Broward County Celebrate Its Centennial Birthday By Beverly Perkins

B

roward County celebrates their 100th birthday this year, and the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood commissioned three-time Emmy Award-winning artist, Wayne White, to create a piece of art in honor of the county’s namesake, Napoleon Bonaparte Broward. Broward was the nineteenth Governor of Florida from 1905-1909. He was responsible for development in the Everglades, improvement of Florida’s state university system and the reform of the state hospital network. The County was given his name upon its incorporation in 1915. Wayne White, best known for his showmanship and humor in his eclectic and witty work as a puppeteer, a set designer and two and three dimensional creations, had a 10-day residency at the Art and Culture Center. White led workshops with nine pre-selected local high school artists while creating his supersized puppet in his first Florida exhibition. The Los Angeles-based artist constructed a giant Napoleon puppet as the centerpiece at the gallery with his signature materials of cardboard and hot glue. The students made their own puppets based on an Everglades theme to display in the Interactive Art Room. “I’ve always had the do-it-yourself approach,” White says of his art-making practice. “I grew up in this blue collar family and didn’t have a lot of toys, so you

AUGUST 2015 | OUR CITY Hollywood & Hallandale

had to make your own fun. Building forts out of sticks and scrap lumber – that’s where I learned the joy of making something from nothing.” The Tennessee native artist’s exhibit, Wayne White: Art is Supposed to Hypnotize You or Something, will be on display at the Center until August 23rd. In addition to his three-dimensional works, White is renowned in the fine art world for his “word paintings.” Growing up in the south has become an inspiration for his work as he repurposes vintage paintings and integrates them with painted phrases. This exhibition is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, Visit Florida, Citizens Interested in Arts, and a Cultural Tourism Program grant from the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood is located at 1650 Harrison St. in Hollywood, FL. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday 10 am – 5 pm, and Saturday – Sunday, Noon – 4 pm. Temple Solel Welcomes New Clergy feature story

By Beverly Perkins

F

or nearly half a century, Temple Solel has been providing a place of worship for the Jewish population in Hollywood. Founded in 1970 with only 35 families, it has grown to almost 400 families and has had only two Rabbis: Rabbi Robert P. Frazin and Rabbi Jeffrey Kurtz-Lendner. However, the time has come again for the welcoming of their third Rabbi: Rabbi Jeffrey Salkin.

Judaism has much to say about issues of social justice, hunger, and education, among others.

Solel is the Hebrew word for Pathfinder and there is no doubt that they are still continuing on the right one.

Senior Rabbi, Rabbi Jeffrey Salkin and Executive Director, Robin Agronin took some time to share some important details about the ever growing Temple Solel.

What denomination of Judaism do you serve?

Temple Solel is affiliated with the Reform movement. We welcome everyone who is interested in growing Jewishly, in a spiritually and intellectually-invigorating environment.

spots. I am committed to helping Jews find themselves in Judaism. We will have classes on prayer and Jewish spirituality, introduction to Judaism, Jewish values and ethics, and Torah study on Shabbat (Saturday) mornings. Rabbi Emeritus Robert P. Frazin also conducts some adult education classes.

How many members and families are currently involved? There are approximately 360 families.

family. Many of our members grew up in South Florida, and at Temple Solel, and so we cherish our multi-generational feel. Temple Solel also has a tradition of people being involved in the dayto-day life of the synagogue. We have an amazing professional staff: Cantor Israel Rosen, who is an institution at Solel, having been part of the Clergy for 30 years; our Director of Education Valeria Michanie who is unsurpassed in her dynamism and creativity, and Robin Agronin, our Executive Director who puts it all together, lovingly. Finally, our caterer Artisan Foods, which makes celebrations even sweeter and more delicious.

Do you post weekly Shabbat messages? On Tuesdays, the synagogue sends congregants a weekly email update of news and events, and a Shabbat Shalom greeting is sent out to congregants on Fridays. I also have a blog -- “Martini Judaism: for those who want to be shaken and stirred” -- which is published by the Religion News Service. It can be accessed at jeffreysalkin. religionnews.com. Top-Notch Teacher Creates Top Chef Competition at Hollywood Park Elementary School News

ollywood Park Elementary Exceptional Student Education (ESE) teacher, Eileen Santiago wanted to teach her students math, reading and science skills in a different way. So, she cooked up a lesson plan and was awarded a grant from the Broward Education Foundation and the City of Hollywood to bring her project, “Hollywood’s Top Chef” to life for her special needs students. Santiago’s students are 8-10 year old boys and girls with varying Intellectual Disabilities such as language, visual and physical impairments as well as Down syndrome and Angelman syndrome. Hollywood Park Elementary has six cluster classrooms that service students with Intellectual Disabilities (InD) from grades K-5. Santiago reached out to local restaurants who would be interested in coming into her classroom to present simple cooking activities. She was fortunate to have seven restaurants agree without hesitation. In the meantime, she took her class on virtual field trips to each participating restaurant on the internet. This familiarized the students with what types of foods they would be making on the big day all while incorporating math, science and reading into this project. These seven Hollywood restaurants were Froots, Gino’s Italian Market and Deli, Millers Hollywood Ale House, Laura’s Cuban Restaurant, The Culinary Arts Program at Sheridan Technical High School, Tony the Pizza Chef II and Que Perros Columbian Food. Representatives from each of the eateries came to share

their ideas and then the students got to decide which one they wanted to work with in the competition. These menu items consisted of chicken salad, Italian subs, apple walnut salad, Cuban sandwiches, cupcakes, pizza and Colombian hot dogs. To prepare for the competition, the ten students worked in groups, read stories about their selection, wrote and/or traced recipes and made of list of the ingredients and steps needed to create their chosen meal. The students also practiced their social and interaction skills before the presentation. “I combine reading and math lessons to real-life experiences such as cooking,” says Santiago. “My students not only learn, but have fun working on social and daily living skills. These fun activities mean everything to them.” On competition day students put on their aprons, donated by Que Perros and their chef hats, donated by the Culinary Arts Program at Sheridan Technical High School and then stood before four judges, their parents and other supporters to show off their cooking skills. Tony the Pizza Chef II donated all the ingredients for the competition and Millers Ale House donated the ingredients to make their famous apple walnut salad. All it takes is one devoted teacher, mixed with special boys and girls, a dash of community help and a heaping sprinkle of love to have a recipe of success in any classroom.

making patients smile and laugh for almost three decades. She says, “It’s just fun and to make even one child smile, that’s powerful. And to see the father and the mother smile ... it just makes the day lighter.” Lotsy’s attire typically consists of wearing a colorful tutu as she walks around speaking with patients and keeping them in good spirits before surgery. One morning last summer Lotsy was entertaining a young patient who happened to point to Tony Smith, a member of the surgical transport team. The youngster wanted to know why he wasn’t wearing a tutu. Lotsy immediately gave hers to Smith, and he put it on without hesitation. The child instantly was amused and relaxed and the “TuTu Tuesday” trend was born. Tuesdays have become bright around the hospital, as staff members throughout the building wear the tulle skirts intended for ballerinas. More than 150

employees, male and female, enjoy wearing the silly skirt over their scrubs to prove that hospitals don’t have to be depressing. The valet attendants also participate, so as soon as patients pull up to the facility they can feel at ease. Lotsy Dotsy may be clowning around, but it is serious work. She holds tiny hands through chemo treatments, escorts children to medical tests and evaluations and delivers some necessary comic relief to parents in need of a smile. “It’s not all about medical procedures,” Herbert says, “We really believe in the power of laughter and smiles and having fun.”

ach year 24 students are selected to be a Teen Ambassador at the Broward Center for The Performing Arts. These chosen few will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the arts by attending performances and workshops presented at the Broward Center and their affiliated venues. They will be given complimentary tickets to see Broadway shows, opera, ballet, jazz and concerts while exploring and learning the behind the scenes operations of the performing arts. Participants will also receive community service hours for their participation in the program. In order to receive this sought after position certain criteria must be met.

High school students are encouraged to apply if they have a love for the theatre and an aptitude for writing as they must write reviews for the shows they attend and then share them on social media. The goal of the program is to give Teen Ambassadors a platform to expose other teens to the world of the performing arts through their perspective with hopes of getting them more involved. Typically monthly meetings have guest speakers who come and tell the Ambassadors their experiences in the theatre. These can be directors, company managers and not necessarily performers. Sixteen year old, Hollywood resident, Sofia Ubilla was part of the 2014-2015 Teen Ambassador program and is applying again for the upcoming season. As a rising junior at American Heritage School in Plantation, she has always been involved in the theatre arts since she was just nine years old. Playing a variety of characters, including Maria in West Side Story, has given her the opportunity to be introduced to the arts at such a young age. Sofia’s mother discovered the Teen Ambassador program and Ubilla eagerly applied and was anxious to be accepted. Fortunately she was and says, “I’ve always loved watching all types of live performances, and with this program, I was given the chance to do that for free, and get service hours while doing some-

Before joining this program Ubilla’s intentions were to only perform onstage, but this opportunity allowed her to see the entire process of a production. She had the once in a lifetime chance to view The Lion King from “the pit”, an area reserved for the elite directors and staff. She also listened to The Phantom of the Opera on a headset where she heard the stage manager call all the technical cues which was an incredible experience as this particular show is extremely technical. Ubilla says, “I came into this program thinking of only being a performer. I’m coming out of it thinking I could be a director, or a stage manager. I’ve realized that there are so many jobs in the theater world that may not be performing, but still let me express my passion and love for theater. This year, I saw my first opera, my first symphony, and my first jazz concert. I’ve seen incredible pieces of theater that have blown me off of my feet and changed the way I look at the world.” To apply for the Teen Ambassador Program visit http:// browardcenter.org/education/student-programs/teenambassadors. All applications must be TYPED and received by August 28, 2015 at 5:00 pm.

Congresswoman Rep. Wasserman Schultz Honors Outstanding Students

T

he academic school year ended for many students with graduation ceremonies, parties and award banquets. However, a select bunch of outstanding students received a special visit and recognition luncheon ceremony from Congresswoman Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz. For the first time, the Congresswoman presented her very own “Citizenship Award for School and Public Service” at Florida Atlantic University to recipients who reside in her Congressional district (FL-23). In order to be selected, members of the junior classes in area high schools needed to show that they embody the ideals of citizenship, civic engagement, and service to their school, community and nation through their character and actions. Principals, guidance counselors, Brace advisors and teachers were asked to submit names of students portraying these characteristics in a short summary. After the process only eighteen students were chosen and honored with a plaque. Recipients from Hollywood and Hallandale were: Austin Vogt from Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory, Jyrra Thompson from Hallandale High School, Jennifer Simu from Hollywood Hills High School, Alexandra Meridionale from McArthur High School and Una Milovanovic from South Broward High School. Alexandra Meridionale, McArthur High School, excels in her studies while taking Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment and honor level classes. Not only is she involved in activities and clubs on the school campus, she is the founder of “Project Purify Poverty”. This is a branch under the non-profit organization of “Haiti’s Hope”, which raises funds for third world countries to have clean water. Through her hard work and dedication, she has raised over $8,000 and continues to volunteer at numerous youth camps and at the Broward Health Medical Center. Una Milovanovic, South Broward High School, demonstrates a desire for knowledge and success after coming to the United States from a small town in Bosnia in the 10th grade. She had to overcome many obstacles such as learning a new language and assimilating to her new environment. Her ambition and determination has earned her an “A” average in Advanced Placement classes and Cambridge AICE subjects along with positions in many school clubs and opportunities in various organizations such as “Relay for Life”, “Wings for Life” and “Women in Distress” plus a coveted place on the “Principal’s List”. Jennifer Simu, Hollywood Hills High School, currently ranks number 2 in her class of 512 students. She is a well-rounded student and athlete as well as the 2015-2016 student body President. She has outstanding

leadership skills and has completed over 800 community service hours. Jyrra Thompson, Hallandale High School, has been volunteering at “Amanda’s House, Inc.” since 2013 and has completed more than 4,000 community service hours. She has become a Junior Board Member President of Amanda’s House, and recognized the need to create awareness about food insecurities by passing out flyers and college care packages as well as teaching young children about the importance of healthy eating. Austin Vogt Austin Vogt, Chaminade-Madonna was chosen because of his ambition, compassion and genuine behavior along with his passion for social sciences, fine arts and theatre. In addition to his impressive course load of honors and Advanced Placement classes, Vogt is producing his own play at the community theatre which focuses on social issues bringing awareness to the area of mental health. Congresswoman Rep. Wasserman Schultz says, “I started down my career path at only 25 when I ran for the Florida House of Representatives, but my journey into public service began long before that when I was a young woman in school – just like this year’s winners. There are few things more important to me than doing my part to elevate the young men and women of our community who are making South Florida a better place to live, work, and raise a family. Without them, South Florida would not be the vibrant place it is today.”

Advanced Abdominal Contouring

L

ipoabdominoplasty is an advanced technique bringing significant change to the traditional tummy tuck. The procedure involves a combination of traditional liposuction with an open skin and fat removal procedure, typically referred to as a tummy tuck. The combination of the two procedures enables the plastic surgeon to contour and shape the abdomen and the adjacent areas more completely. Patients who have experienced increased skin laxity and excess fat deposition in the abdomen, hips, and waist can now transform their bodies into a more beautiful shape. This procedure is ideal for patients who have excess skin and fat with abdominal weakness, commonly seen after childbirth, weight loss, and with the alterations that are seen with the aging process. Lipoabdominoplasty safely combines suction-assisted lipectomy (liposuction) with abdominal muscle tightening and skin removal. The fat, which is removed via lipoaspiration, can be added to other areas of contour deficiency like the buttocks through fat grafting or transfer. This combination reshapes the entire midsection and buttock giving the individual the shapely body contour they desire. The technique should be used with caution in patients who have a history of smoking or previous abdominal surgery, and should be performed only by experienced surgeons who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. There are a number of important variables that determine whether a patient is a candidate for a lipoabdominoplasty. For any plastic surgical procedure to be a complete success, medical and psychological fitness for surgery is a prerequisite. The appropriate patient typically is close to their ideal body weight with anatomic features that may be improved surgically, including loose skin, excess fat, and weakened abdominal muscles. The distribution of fat is one determinant of the improvement a patient will have from a tummy tuck. Fat in the superficial tissue is the type that is possible to pinch. This superficial fat may be removed through excision (tummy tuck) or aspiration (liposuction). If skin laxity or looseness is significant, the skin and fat should be removed with a tummy tuck. If the skin elasticity is adequate; however, the superficial fat may be removed through liposuction alone. Liposuction may flatten the abdomen, but it will not tighten the skin significantly. Patients who have soft, distended abdomens frequently have lax muscles or a separation of rectus muscle in the midline known as diastasis. This is common after multiple pregnancies making it a great procedure for “Mommy Makeovers” or significant weight loss patients. When patients have excess skin that extends to the lateral hips and lower back or buttocks, an extended or circumferential abdominoplasty may be necessary. For most patients the resultant incision is well hidden within underwear and bathing suit lines. The procedure usually takes 2 – 3 hours. Patients should prepare to rest for a minimum of one to two weeks after their procedure. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. O

ne of the most difficult challenges we face in assisting homeowners through the process of a loan modification, is avoiding the threat of foreclosure, or foreclosure sale of the property we are trying to preserve. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) issued new mortgage servicing rules designed to protect borrowers when it comes to mortgage loans. These rules became effective a little over one year ago, but many homeowners are unaware of these important changes in the law. Our experience has shown that homeowners that take full advantage of these rules have obtained excellent loan modification results, have been able to stop foreclosure sales, correct escrow and payment issues on their account, and even cancel foreclosure trials.

New Laws Level the Playing Field for Homeowners Facing Foreclosure

AUGUST 2015 | OUR CITY Hollywood & Hallandale

Under the new rules mortgage servicers are required to implement major changes in the way they do business. A mortgage servicer is the company that collects monthly mortgage payments from borrowers on behalf of the owner of the loan, as well as tracks account balances, manages the escrow account, handles loan modification applications, and pursues foreclosure in the case of defaulted loans. The CFPB now requires mortgage servicers to send more detailed periodic billing statements, provide timely interest rate adjustment notices, promptly credit mortgage payments, provide payoff requests in seven days or less, provide options to force-placed insurance, and quickly resolve errors and provide information requests. The most significant benefit for homeowners from these rules is that it restricts “dual tracking.” Dual tracking is when a mortgage servicer considers a homeowner for a loan modification, and at the same time proceeds with a foreclosure action against that homeowner. Under the new rules, a mortgage servicer cannot start foreclosure until at least four months after the homeowner stops paying the loan to provide the homeowner enough time to pursue a loan modification. If a loan modification application is made, the servicer cannot start foreclosure unless the servicer notifies the borrower that he/she is not eligible for any loan modification, the borrower rejects a loan modification offer, or the borrower fails to comply with a trial modification. Also, if already in foreclosure, the mortgage servicer cannot request final judgement or conduct a foreclosure sale if the homeowner submits a complete loan modification package at least 37 days before a trial, final judgment or foreclosure sale. The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm are privileged to successfully represent hundreds of homeowners in our community. We have foreclosure defense, loan modification and bankruptcy departments all in the same office. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a one-of-a-kind DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free personal consultation with attorney Omar Arcia or visit www. arcialawfirm.com to schedule your appointment.

ear Neighbors, The City of Hollywood is using new technological advances to make life easier for residents by removing the hassles and hurdles associated with interfacing with City Hall. The City’s “Help Me Hollywood” program, which is available on the City’s website or as an application (an “app”) is a simple way for residents’ complaints, concerns or issues to be received, prioritized and tracked so they can be promptly addressed and resolved. Let’s say, for example, you see a property in the City that is in a state of serious disrepair. You could go to the City’s website, www.hollywoodfl.org, click the link for “Help Me Hollywood,” enter in the relevant information and even add a photo. With a few clicks of your computer mouse, the issue can be routed through the website to the correct City department.

ask the expert

Mayor’s Message

Help Me Hollywood

Summer is Here. Are You Beach Ready?

S

ummer is here. Instead of hiding in the shade, it’s time to get that beach body you’ve always wanted. Diet, exercise and plastic surgery go hand-in-hand to achieve this goal. A popular procedure for body shaping is the abdominoplasty, also known as the tummy tuck. This is a very popular procedure for mothers. Pregnancy, and the weight gain that occurs, create growth, not only of the baby, but also of the mom. Among the structures that grow to accommodate the new addition is mom’s belly skin. Sometimes the skin has difficulty expanding evenly so it cracks in areas. These cracks in the skin are what we identify as stretch marks. Loose tummy skin can also occur simply as a consequence of significant weight loss. This condition can affect both men and women, so the tummy tuck procedure may benefit both sexes.

Tightening the Belly

The abdomen does the heavy lifting in pregnancy. It’s no surprise therefore, that after pregnancy, skin redundancy and stretch marks can remain.

Doing it on your smartphone, however, is a million times cooler. If you have an iPhone or Android device, go to your phone’s “app” store and download the FREE mobile app, “Help Me Hollywood.” It’s a really simple, intuitive and useful way to report City problems or issues using the Global Positioning System (GPS) and camera features of your smartphone. Let’s say you see some graffiti while you are out and about, and take a picture of it with your smartphone. The “Help Me Hollywood” app can promptly let the City know the location of the graffiti using the GPS feature of your phone, and city staff can easily be dispatched to address the issue. It’s truly an incredible way for residents to report issues and be involved in ensuring Hollywood has a positive community appearance. I support the City creating this app because many residents are simply too busy to deal with coming home, getting the kids fed, getting dinner ready—and, oh, yeah—then remembering to find the phone number for City Hall to report a pothole they saw earlier that day. Of course, not everyone has a smartphone or access to a computer. That’s okay, because whether you can access the City’s technology or not, it is still everyone’s responsibility to report issues and concerns that, ultimately, affect the well-being of other residents. A community’s quality of life is everyone’s business: if you see something, say something. Whether you get the “Help Me Hollywood” app on your smartphone, use the City’s website or simply mail letters about an unsatisfactory condition to the City, the bottom line is we must be vigilant in looking for new ways to enhance resident input. To that end, if we at City Hall can implement technology to make it easier for residents to express concerns or simply be heard, then such technology should be deployed. If you get an opportunity to use our super-cool “Help Me Hollywood” program, I would really love to hear about your experience. You can e-mail me at pbober@hollywoodfl.org or call me at 954.921.3321. I wish you and your family all the best as we head into summer. Sincerely, Peter Bober Mayor

A patient shown before and after tummy tuck surgery. Side view photos show the dramatic effect of muscle tightening. Photos courtesy of Perez Plastic Surgery.

Another interesting effect of pregnancy is a separation of the paired rectus abdominus (i.e. sit-up) muscles. The result is a gap between the muscles resembling a hernia. It is because of this anatomical separation of the muscles that abdominal exercises after pregnancy, such as sit-ups, although beneficial, are of limited value. Not all surgeons tighten the muscles as part of the tummy tuck procedure, so patients should insist that it be done. Tummy tuck surgery requires scars that need to be accepted by the patient. The tradeoff, however, is substantial removal of excess skin, fat and stretch marks, as well as repositioning of the muscles. The result is a dramatic tightening of the belly with a very high degree of satisfaction. Tummy tuck patients are among the happiest in our practice. Tummy tucks can be combined with breast surgery or liposuction of the love handles or thighs. Combination procedures, however, require an experienced surgeon and additional safety considerations with respect to the operating facility and anesthesia. pet of the month

“Lexi”

Lexi is a 14 year old, domestic short hair feline. She has had quite an adventurous life living in New York, Vermont, Columbia and now Hallandale Beach. She loves playing with the rings from orange juice jugs, curling up on her “human mama’s” lap and getting her head wet in the shower. However, she dislikes taking her medicine every day. She was last seen rolling on her back trying to get her tummy rubbed.
