he summer of 2015 is slowly coming to an end. Summer vacations are fading into memory and the kids are settling into their school routines. With football season kicking into high gear, our lives are slowly returning to “normal.” While our afternoons and evenings may seem to be a blur of racing to and from afterschool activities, sports practices and music lessons, let’s not forget that the fall season in Florida has plenty to offer for family fun. The sun is not quite so scorching hot, and the ocean waters are still warm and beautiful. So put down the tablet, switch off the game console, and get out there and enjoy the soothing surf, take an airboat tour through the Everglades, or simply make time for a movie matinee. Whatever you choose to do, do it with family and friends. Our hectic lives force us to spend time separated from loved ones for most of the day, either at work or school, so make sure you make the time to enjoy each other’s company whenever you can.

Hallandale Beach Residents Get Turned Upside Down by the Inside Out Theatre Company By Beverly Perkins

ogether the City of Hallandale Beach and Inside Out Theatre Company’s Robin Braun created a project to unite Hallandale Beach residents in the four quadrants. The project was appropriately titled, “Removing the Tracks: Acknowledging the Past, Creating the Future”. This year-long project was funded with a grant from The Community Foundation of Broward. The purpose of the program was to use the arts as a tool of dialogue to unite and bridge the demographic divide while strengthening the city. Regardless of age, race or socioeconomic status, residents were all encouraged to participate. The goal of Inside Out Theatre is to use the performing arts to address social and community concerns. By doing so, they are committed to producing works that stimulate positive change. “Removing the Tracks” started with theatre workshops in January where participants were able to meet each other and discuss the issues that divide them and then talk about the positive things that can bring them together. This type of environment was crucial as the participants were able to learn about each other and connect on a different level. Although the program was initially intended for adults, many students from Hallandale High School expressed interest and became involved. These meetings then turned into creative workshops where a

script was written for the project’s closing play in May at the Hallandale Beach Cultural Community Center. The premise had characters transported to the various areas of the city while learning about stereotypes and prejudices. The end result was the casting of twenty people with representation from the city’s four quadrants. City residents not only wrote the script, they performed and designed the set. Scenes from the area’s four quadrants were featured in the production. These four painted panel murals are now public art in Hallandale Beach. The program was so successful that the City of Hallandale Beach gave Robin Braun from Inside Out Theatre, the cast and the partners a proclamation on June 17th. The proclamation reads: “In recognition of your remarkable and thought-provoking production “Removing the Tracks: Acknowledging the Past, Creating the Future”. Your commitment to transforming social and personal expectations as well as your contribution to human development is greatly appreciated”. The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood Will Announce Winners of the “Seventh All-Media Juried Biennial” at an Opening Reception By Beverly Perkins

ll artists residing in the state of Florida were invited to submit entries of contemporary artwork to be considered in the “Seventh All-Media Juried Biennial” at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood. The art will be on display at the center from September 18th through November 1, 2015. Original paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, photography, video, computer-generated images, performance, and site-specific installations were considered. This year a record number of entrants and submissions were received. An overwhelming 383 artists representing 21 Florida counties submitted 1,084 entries to be judged. The winners will be announced at the opening reception on Friday, September 18th from 6:00pm-9:00pm at the Art and Culture Center. The difficult decision of selecting winners will be by this year’s jurors Marisa J. Pascucci, Curator of Collections at the Boca Raton Museum of Art, and Elizabeth Cerejido, Independent Curator of modern and contemporary Latin American art and photography. Artist and consultant, Michelle Weinberg will be curating the exhibitions. Award winners will be selected for Best in Show ($2,000 prize), First Place ($1,000 prize), Second Place ($600 prize), Third Place ($400 prize), and Honorable Mentions. Feels Musical by South Florida artist Autumn Casey. Casey utilizes video, sound and sculptural work within her installation along with personal relics and found materials. Also, at the center is #acchfocus, a collection of small-format images by 52 weekly winners of the #acchfocus Instagram contest which was presented by the Art and Culture Center in 2014. Admission to the Artists’ Reception on September 18th will be free for members and $10 for non-members. Many of the participating artists will be there that night, so it’s a perfect opportunity to meet some of Florida’s talented artisans.

lissa Alfonso, Hollywood resident and artist, completed her second photo shoot at the Humane Society of Broward County (HSBC) with photo assistant Manon Wiese. “Sea of Love” was the title of the whimsical installation which included recycled materials turned into art. However, this amazing backdrop for the shoot was secondary to the furry four-legged friends which took center stage. The HSBC photo studio was transformed into an underwater backdrop for these shelter animals needing forever homes. Both cats’ and dogs’ expressions were captured while they were able to experience

this intriguing set. Cherie Wachter, VP of Marketing at the HSBC says, “The photos are beautiful and have a whimsy and charming appeal. They also help to showcase the pet’s personalities.” Alfonso is committed to expressing how color and form exist in nature. Therefore, she has been deeply inspired by design and the love of recycled materials. Her work consists of plenty of fabrics of which she hand dyes, cuts, designs and sews on canvas. Her attention to detail and color make her creations inspirational. In addition to being an artist, Alfonso works as a stylist for events and photo shoots. Her love for design and detail complement both professions. She has been known to conceptualize a vision and execute it flawlessly while using her custom and hand-made items. Her natural abilities have helped her achieve success in charitable work such as helping these animals find homes. “My ongoing photo series with the animals at the Broward County Humane Society is very meaningful to me,” says Alfonso. “Working with the dogs, cats and even bunnies that have been at the shelter for a long time and giving them exposure in a styled creative atmosphere hopefully will implement finding their forever families as quickly as possible.” Recycling is a second chance at using something again and adopting is giving shelter animals a second chance to have a happy home. Hallandale School House Still Educates the Public

allandale Beach has a history lesson to teach residents and visitors alike about the early days of life in the settlement. The City of Hallandale Beach reopened and restored Broward County’s oldest school house which was built in 1910. A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the completion of this historic structure earlier this year. In 1906 the original Hallandale School was built, but it was destroyed by a hurricane in 1910. After the storm, local citizens petitioned the Dade County School Board (Broward County was formed in 1915) for a new building. The school board lacked the funds to replace the school, but offered to make contributions of lumber and other necessary materials. A group of Hallandale residents travelled to Miami to pick up the supplies and delivered them to the site of the first school. Eventually, a second school was reconstructed by volunteer labor. A two-room, 1,600 square foot building was built on Hallandale Beach Blvd. It served as a community school for students from elementary to high school until Broward County established a public education system. This was when a new and larger school was built and the little school closed its doors in the spring of 1916. The school house then sat abandoned until 1921 when the Bethlehem Lutheran Church

purchased the building. The building was then used by the church as a religious learning center until 1966 when it was donated to the City and moved to its current location. After decades of weathering by natural elements and usage, the wooden structure became dilapidated and was in much need of repair. The City decided to preserve the historical landmark and the City’s Department of Public Works craftsmen diligently worked to bring the building back to life. The restoration needed to comply with today’s code standards and now includes indoor plumbing, electrical outlets and upgraded air conditioning. One side of the newly renovated building houses a museum and the other a replica of a classroom complete with appropriate furnishings. Visitors can now take a journey back in time and tour the school house on the third Saturday of each month. The Historic Preservation Board will give tours on the third Saturday of each month. 12:00am-3:00pm at 648 NW 2nd Street, Hallandale Beach. Cost is free, but donations are accepted. McArthur Marching Mustangs Take On Washington D.C. By Beverly Perkins

he McArthur High School Marching Mustangs were nominated by Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Shultz to represent Florida in “America’s National Independence Day Parade” in Washington, D.C., on Constitution Avenue on July 4th. Hundreds of thousands of spectators gather at this annual event to see giant balloons, floats, military and specialty units, equestrian, drill teams, VIP’s, national dignitaries, fife and drum corps and celebrities celebrate the nation’s birthday. In addition to all these traditional parade staples, high school bands from around the country were invited to participate. However, these bands were only invited based on recommendations from each state’s

Governor’s office, a state’s music educator’s office or any other music education organization at the governor’s request. Fortunately, the office of Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23) received a request to nominate five schools in their district who they thought should participate in the July 4th parade. The office then reached out to the Broward County School System to ask for input. One of the schools they suggested was McArthur High School. The Congresswoman’s office liked the recommendation and nominated the Mustangs, and they were given the honor to perform. The goal of the Parade National Selection Committee is to have representation from all parts of the United States with at least one band or unit representing each of the 50 states. Bands had to submit video recordings, photos, biographical information with details about experience, honors, past adjudi-

cation results, festival ratings, etc. They were then selected on the basis of overall quality, as well as geographical, ethnic and stylistic diversity. Under the direction of Director of Bands, Dontay Douglas, 54 students were given this once in a lifetime opportunity to perform in the country’s capital. Douglas’ goal is to give his students leadership skills, discipline, strong work ethics and a commitment to excellence to achieve success as a whole. In his 2 years at McArthur High, he has already achieved it. These ambitious and dedicated Mustangs spent the year fundraising and debuted their first new uniform in 15 years at the parade. During their hectic three day stay, they were able to tour all the memorials with their very own personal tour guide. One special moment was when they visited the Arlington Cemetery and four of the uniformed band leaders were honored to place the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers.

It’s Easy Being Green at Hollywood Park Elementary School News

uring the spring quarter of the last school year, Hollywood Park Elementary students in Ms. Eileen Santiago’s class learned the importance of being green. Even though they worked on various recycling projects throughout the school year, the students were super excited to receive an invitation from Andrea Tamarez, Producer at Beacon TV, asking them to participate in the 5th annual “Funtastic Friday Goes Green” at ArtsPark at Young Circle. In order to take part in this huge community event, the students along with their parents and school staff, got busy deciding what they could do to contribute to the annual festival. They agreed to create bird feeders, book holders and planters. In order to produce enough of these recycled products, they needed assistance collecting milk cartons, cereal boxes and wrapping paper. Hundreds were brought in, and these special K-5 students with Intellectual Disabilities (InD) rinsed, cleaned and painted all of them. The students were able to work on their gross motor skills while creating artistic masterpieces with their favorite colors. They also used fine motor skills as they attached beaded bracelets to complete their finished projects. As time was approaching for the big day, the students received extra help from three high school volunteers. Stela Shabani from West Broward High, Alejandro Osorio from Hollywood Hills High and

Richard Rico from Cooper City High came in to help set up the tables and assist in giving the products away. Reshma Mulcan, Ms. Santiago’s student teacher and recent graduate from Broward College also helped create project ideas and supported the students in their efforts. During the science block, Ms. Santiago’s class learned about the planet Earth and what they could do to save and protect it. It started in the classroom by sorting paper and plastic materials and putting them in the appropriate bins. They also wrote in journals and had discussions to develop writing and speaking proficiency skills. However, their favorite activity was reading the book and watching the movie “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss. This classic tale shows a young boy searching for answers on how he can do his part to repair his town. Hollywood Park Elementary can expect big things from this little class during the 2015-2016 school year. Ms. Santiago plans on starting a recycling club which will educate members on what they can do to save the planet. She also wants to improve the recycling efforts at school by setting a good example that can translate at home and in the community as well. Sanitago’s all-time favorite quote from Dr. Seuss, which she shares with the children is, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot. Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

Since 2010, ChaminadeMadonna has been consecutively voted as the “Best Dr. Judith Mucheck, Incoming ChaminadeSchool in Hollywood”. Shorter Races Aim at Finding a Cure in The Long Run SECTION HEAD Community NEWS

he popularity of shorter distance runs/walks has increased across the country as opposed to the traditional longer ones. Regardless of age and athletic ability, more people are able to participate. Thus, more funds could

be raised for charitable causes. “Choose Your Own Adventure” style runs are offered this year when the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) Team Challenge South Florida kicks off their racing season. The new, shorter distance races offer an alternative to the 13.1 mile runs of the traditional Team Challenge half-marathon events. Some of this year’s themes consist of super heroes, ghosts and jungle animals. Participants will still be able to complete a half marathon, but in increments of five, 5k fun runs, if they choose to partake in all of them while helping to cure digestive diseases. “I came up with the 5K challenge in which participants will ultimately run 13.1 miles with Team Challenge but they will do it in 3.1 mile increments. With all the amazing 5Ks in South Florida I couldn’t resist from choosing a bunch of fun, quirky themed runs,” says Alyssa Rich, Team Challenge Endurance Manager for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America. “I am hopeful that people from across South Florida will join us in fighting to find a cure especially since we now have local race options in every South Florida market.”

Through Team Challenge, participants can run or walk 13.1 miles, or train for a triathlon or cycling event while helping to find a cure for Crohn’s disease and

ulcerative colitis, two chronic and often debilitating digestive diseases that impact more than 1.5 million Americans. The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) is the largest voluntary non-profit health organization dedicated to finding cures for these painful, medically incurable diseases and improving the quality of life for children and adults who suffer from them. Throughout the season, participants can select five mini-races from the many offered in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Upcoming challenges in Hollywood are “The Fire Hero 5K” on September 6th at 7am at Charnow Park on the Hollywood Boardwalk and the “Halloween Spooktacular” on October 31st at TY Park. Some races do benefit separate charities, however, all Team Challenge runners will always benefit the CCFA. n today’s hectic and fast paced world, one often forgets to take the time to decompress and focus on themselves. There is a growing need for spaces in which individuals can go to quiet their mind from all the chaos and noise, and Hollywood Meditation Groups offers plenty of opportunities to achieve inner peace, clarity of mind and positive thinking. The mastermind to get into the inner mind is Roz Reich, Director of Hollywood Meditation Groups. She has been practicing meditation on a daily basis since 1988 and attends yearly classes in India. The method she practices is Raj Yoga Meditation which she learned with the Brahma Kumaris at the Miami Meditation Center. She considers Broward County as their satellite office. “I meditate to bring peace to myself and others, and to bring out the best in myself and others; to make a difference,” says Reich. “One of the mottos of our group that really touches me is ‘when I change, the world changes’.” Reich brought these weekly meditation classes to Hollywood nine years ago, and she started the Global Meditation for World Peace in ArtsPark two years ago. This monthly event is in the center of all the hustle and bustle, Young Circle. There’s no better place for all area residents to centrally gather and learn to breathe and calm the soul while the world around them is moving. Just in time for the United Nations’ International Day of Peace on September 21st is this month’s free event on September 20th from 6:00pm-7:30pm. Kevin Menear is one of the featured meditators at this Brahma Kumaris sponsored event. His healing meditation music is popular amongst his followers. The global holiday has individuals, communities, nations and governments highlighting efforts to end conflict and promote peace around the world. Weekly events can be found around town at the Hollywood Library in the

Meditation is a skill and requires practice just like anything else one is trying to achieve. The more one practices, the more it becomes an easy and natural habit. The rewards have proven to be a beneficial and an effective antidote to stress and a simple method of relaxation. ocalized fat deposits beneath the chin can cause a fullness often referred to as a “double chin.” Anatomically, this area is known as the submental region. A new FDA-approved treatment is now available to reduce and potentially eliminate an unwanted double chin. Kybella is a product that is injected directly into the subcutaneous fat deposit below the chin to reshape and contour this region. Kybella’s active ingredient is deoxycholic acid, a compound that is naturally produced in the body. This chemical functions in the human body by reducing the absorption of fats into the bloodstream by destruct-

ing them. Kybella is a cytolytic drug, meaning that it breaks down the membranes of the cell when it interacts with it. The mechanism of action is not limited to fat cells. If the procedure is not performed correctly by an appropriately licensed and credentialed healthcare professional, then normal tissue can be damaged resulting in a soft tissue deformity. Presently, Kybella is only FDA approved for the submental area. It is not known if Kybella is safe or effective for treatment outside this region. A patient may experience localized swelling, bruising, redness, numbness, or hardness after a treatment with Kybella, which usually resolves within several days. Injections may be repeated as needed with a minimum of one month between each treatment session. The injection takes about five minutes to perform. Most patients require multiple treatments with visible results in two to four treatments, but up to six treatments can be administered. The average dose of Kybella in clinical trials was two to three vials (4 – 6 mls.) per treatment session. Traditionally, submental fat excess was treated with liposuction or direct removal of fat through a submental incision. With Kybella, there is now an FDA approved, non-surgical treatment resulting in little or no down-time. As with any cosmetic surgical or non-surgical procedure, it is important that the procedure is performed by an experienced, board-certified physician in a licensed medical facility. Jaw surgery or chin implants can help compensate for a bony profile deficiency. These procedures however can be complicated and should be approached cautiously with experienced surgeons. A very small degree of skin laxity under the chin can be addressed by a number of non-invasive energy based devices. The treatments can be costly and the results can be disappointingly minimal. Fillers, Botox and other injectables generally do not have a role here. Younger patients with excess neck fat alone and good skin tone may benefit from liposuction. Ultrasonic lipoplasty is an advanced liposuction technique that will also stimulate neck skin tightening. The most common aging change affecting the neck is hanging skin, affectionately known as the “turkey neck”. In addition, loose muscles can contribute to the “gobbler” or wattle. A common treatment to correct this separation is to sew these bands together with a small incision under the chin. A unique, less invasive, operation performed by our office is to combine neck muscle repair with ultrasonic lipoplasty for skin tightening in carefully selected patients. We were privileged to present this procedure to plastic surgeons in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

The Gold Standard

The gold standard for neck rejuvenation however, continues to be the conventional face and neck lift. The procedure allows for redraping of the cheeks, jawline jowls and neck in a more even and complete fashion. The anatomy of this area is complex, therefore a thorough consultation with a plastic surgeon experienced in face and neck surgery is required. Many options exist for rejuvenation of the neck and lower face. The procedures can be safe and effective in proper hands. The plastic surgeon, facility and anesthesia all play an important role in the outcome. Cost should never outweigh quality, experience and safety.
