What A Great Time To Be Alive
A
ccording to the Centers for Disease Control, the life expectancy of an average American will soon be greater than 80 years. A century ago it was 50. Child mortality has never been lower. Today, almost everyone has access to virtually all of the world’s collective knowledge literally at their fingertips thanks to mobile phones. Our children live in a world where technologies they take for granted could not have been imagined just ten or 20 years ago. Technology has created a global world, and South Florida is a true melting pot. The blending of South American, European and traditional American cultures has created a truly unique place for us to raise our families and live in peace. Experience all that the region has to offer by taking advantage of the calendar section of Our City magazine. Each month we include a curated list of diverse community activities and events, which appeal to a wide range of people and interests. So go watch a show, attend a charity event, join a book club or even learn to dance. And, when you do, pinch yourself; for it truly is a great time to be alive! Sincerely,
Terry Jaillet President & Publisher

Hollywood Police Officers Received a Special Delivery SECTION HEAD community news
By Beverly Perkins
I
n light of the recent tragedies in the country, a Hollywood resident decided that she needed to do something to show that good still exists in the world, and most importantly in her community. Lara Leader, Temple Sinai Board Member and mother of two, wanted her family to do something special in their neighborhood. “I was devastated after what happened in Dallas. We try to teach our children about living in a community and that the police are ‘good helpers’,” said Leader. “We teach them to appreciate all they do to keep us safe.” After reading an article about families dropping off gifts to the Ft. Lauderdale Police Department, Leader decided she wanted to do the same for the Hollywood Police Department. However, she wanted it to be more organized than that. She wanted to plan a small local event. Being on the PA (Parent’s Association) Board at Temple Sinai
allowed her the opportunity to get many families involved. Temple Sinai Preschool and Summer Camp Director, Donna Anton, agreed that this was an incredible idea and important enough to become the school’s “Mitzvah Project” of the week. Each week a group of students and their parents perform a good deed which helps others in the community or the community as a whole. This thoughtful and energetic bunch of preschool and elementary children created handmade thank you cards to show their support and appreciation of officers of the law. Leader then went on to ask establishments she frequents if they also wanted to become involved. Without hesitation, local businesses were happy to help when she asked if they could donate items to the event. The response and turnout was fantastic, as about thirty children and their parents gathered at the Hollywood Police Department during the summer to make the presentation. The children loved meeting the officers and giving them their personal creations. In addition, delicious treats such as cakes, chocolates and Italian food were presented among beautiful patriotic floral arrangements. In return, the appreciative officers handed out “Junior Police Officer” badge stickers, which the children proudly wore, answered inquisitive questions and gave many hugs. The Hollywood Police Department thanks the parents and children of Temple Sinai of Hollywood, Gino’s Italian Market, Mimi’s Ravioli, Hoffman’s Chocolates, Joan’s Florist and Publix Supermarket #53. “It felt great to show the officers how much they are appreciated in our community and you could tell they loved interacting with the kids,” said Leader.

The PFACs have become indispensable players in establishing and maintaining the culture and, with members serving on committees and task forces, have recommended changes in hospital policies, helped design new spaces within Memorial’s facilities, and proposed new programs, including the Family Resource Centers now located at every hospital.

Leader of the Pack - Be a Part of Local Cub Scout Troops community news
By Beverly Perkins
B
y definition, The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation’s largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. For more than a century the well-known group has helped youth become leaders and responsible, compassionate members of society. Boys as young as age six can find a troop that fits their needs. Cub Scouts, first through fifth grade boys, are broken down into smaller groups called packs. There are tens of thousands of Cub Scout Packs across the country, but four are currently available in the Hollywood area with a fifth in the making. Once completing Cub Scouts, boys move up to become Boy Scouts. The dedicated pack leaders and volunteers teach both fun and valuable life lessons and skills. Each pack provides the opportunity for the entire family to be involved. Whether volunteering when needed or creating and leading programs, parents can take full advantage of being a part of such a hands-on organization with their child. Boy Scouts, on the other hand, are actually run by youth leaders of the troop. This experience begins in the sixth grade and runs through high school. These young men engage in community service and practice leader-
ship development skills. Many aim to earn the highest rank of Eagle Scout. There are currently 855,000 Boy Scouts and 485,000 adult volunteers in the United States. The adventure of scouting begins with just some of these activities and service projects: ▸▸ Building cars from wood and racing them at Pinewood Derby. ▸▸ Camping - where traditional skills are learned such as pitching a tent and building a fire, followed by performing skits, singing songs and of course, roasting marshmallows. ▸▸ Attending the Blue and Gold Banquet to celebrate the birth day of scouting. ▸▸ Fundraising to raise money for the troop’s needs. ▸▸ Marching in the annual Memorial Day parade to honor those who served our country and then placing flags at Veterans’ graves. ▸▸ Participating in food drives to gather items for local food banks and other area organizations. Current meeting locations in Hollywood are as follows, but may be subject to change: ▸▸ Pack 18 meets on Wednesdays at Young Israel of Hollywood-Ft. Lauderdale *This is a Jewish Unit, but all religions and races are welcome. ▸▸ Pack 412 meets Thursdays from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at Sheridan Hills Elementary. ▸▸ Pack 420 meets Tuesdays from 6:30pm to 7:30 pm at Hollywood Central Elementary. ▸▸ Pack 8195 meets on Thursdays from 6:00pm to 7:00pm at Washington Park Community Center. ▸▸ Coming soon: Beachside Montessori Village. For more information on being a scout contact Amber Brown at 305-364-0020 ext. 239 or email amber.brown@scouting.org or visit www.beascout.org.
Hollywood Troop Develops Leaders of Tomorrow – Scout’s Honor By Beverly Perkins
T
he history of scouting dates back to the turn of the 20th century. It all came about when a British Army officer discovered that his men did not know basic first-aid or elementary survival in the great outdoors. This officer went on to write a handbook and then recruited young boys to teach these methods to. Fast forward 100 plus years and the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has become one of the nation’s largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. Tom Valentin, Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 420, states, “The Boy Scouts of America believes and, through over a century of experience, knows that helping youth is a key to building a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society.” Valentin, along with Scoutmaster Bill Orton (also an Eagle Scout), currently have 36 active Boy Scouts in their Hollywood troop. The year-round program designed to achieve the goals of scouting is done through vigorous outdoor and peer group leadership programs led by an adult Scoutmaster. Since 2013, Troop 420 has 10 Eagle Scouts on their honor roll with several more working towards the prestigious ranking. The troop consists of boys ranging from ages 11-17 who attend local schools including South Broward High, Nova High, St. Thomas Aquinas and Nativity. Boy Scout Troop

420 just returned from a week long High Adventure trip to Estes Park, Colorado. the Scouts, ages 14 and older with a First Class rank or higher, were able to participate in several activities such as White Water Rafting, Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing, Horse Back Riding, High Ropes and Archery. They visited the Continental Divide, Rocky Mountain National Park, observed an Alluvial Fan and played in the snow at 12,700’ above sea level. A second group of their younger Boy Scouts attended summer camp at BSA Camp LaNoChe in Paisley, Florida. They participated in outdoor adventure and worked on merit badges that help them grow in their ranks and explored new activities. The BSA continues to provide programs that build character, develop personal fitness and teach responsibility of good citizenship. These lifelong values and educational activities are all presented in a fun way to these future leaders of tomorrow. Boy Scout Troop 420, Hollywood meets Tuesday evenings, 7pm sharp at First Presbyterian Church behind Young Circle. Scoutmaster Bill Orton can be reached for more information at 754-264-4935.
Hallandale Beach is Keeping Clean and Living Green By Beverly Perkins
the environmentally concerned teenagers hosted a Teen Summit to share what they’ve learned with their peers. Pre and post tests were administered in the inaugural year of the Keep Clean, Live Green. Since its inception, the participants doubled their knowledge of environmental issues during the 10 week program. This year’s team has already learned about coral reef restoration, sea grass’ impact on the health of our ocean, careers in the environment, the Everglades ecosystem, and more. The team not only has spent many days cleaning up the beautiful beaches, but shared what they learned weekly with beach goers. All beach clean-up activity is recorded on International Coastal Clean-Up Data Cards and submitted to the Ocean Conservancy for national data research. year’s “Green Team” was led by Marine Biology & Environmental Science teacher, Holly Desmarais and adjunct Professor, Chris Yap. “The City of Hallandale Beach is proud to help develop these future environmentalists, provide them much needed education on local environmental concerns, and of course offer the best summer job on the beach!” says Cathie Schanz, Hallandale Beach Parks & Recreation Director. The mantra of the ambitious bunch of environmentalists is “Leave nothing on the beach but your footprints.” They are hoping to get the message across by educating others on the importance of caring for the environment.

ast year, Hallandale Beach Parks & Recreation Department created a paid work-study program for Hallandale Beach residents ages 16 and 17 years old. The Keep Clean, Live Green initiative was developed to provide future environmentalists, education and employment opportunities for the local youth. The summer program combines environmental education, community outreach, and cleaning the City’s signature recreation site, the Atlantic Oceanfront beaches, three days a week. Each week the green team explores a new environmental theme through guest speakers, field trips, research, and development of a weekly project. The information learned is shared with the community through a beachfront outreach each week. These community outreach projects are a great opportunity for the participants to showcase what they have learned and are a highlight for area beachgoers. At the end of summer,

which worsens at the end of the day or after standing and traveling. If you have vein disease, gradually over time you will notice more and more leg pain, heaviness, swelling, bulging veins, discoloration around the ankles and skin changes. As time goes on, skin changes may worsen and the person can develop scarring called Atrophie Blanche or lipodermatosclerosis. This can lead to venous ulcers around the ankles and sores which are very difficult to heal. These people may require and ultrasound of the legs to diagnose their specific problem.
What is vein disease? Veins
are blood vessels that return blood to the heart from the body. They have one way valves that keep blood flowing in one direction. These valves often do not work properly and when they do not function properly can cause “reflux” or back flow in the veins. The blood then begins to pool when this happens and can cause a variety of problems and symptoms.

Since its inception in 2013, ARC Broward’s School of HIRE Education gives Broward County students, ages 18-22, with developmental disabilities the opportunity to obtain and sustain a career/workforce education, community-based instruction and independent living skills. The school provides these post-secondary students unique options to prepare them for a career after high school. The students are presented with four vocational track choices, including: culinary arts; electronics recycling; child and/or elder care; and

office/clerical work. “We take great pride in the success of our students. From preschool to adulthood, watching them grow up and achieve these milestones is a rewarding experience for our staff, the families and friends who have supported them along the journey,” ARC Broward President/CEO Dennis Haas said. One of the seven students graduating from the ARC Broward School of HIRE Education Program is Hollywood resident Kelly Danyallian. Determined to acquire skills in culinary arts and retail and customer service industries, she was selected from among 42 participants just last August due to her vibrant personality, tenacity, responsibility and positive attitude. Her professional experience includes successful participation in ARC Broward’s Youth Links Afterschool Program with two summer employment internships at CVS Pharmacy in 2014 and at Big Lots in Hollywood, FL in 2015. She has also participated in CBI (Community Based Instruction) through the School of HIRE Education in several fields, such as clerical, childcare, elder care, retail and culinary. Another successful graduate from Hollywood, Bryan Gomez Cisneros, began the program last October to obtain additional employment training and independent skills. Since 2014, Bryan has worked
at Trader Joe’s in Hollywood as a grocery clerk. The store manager speaks very highly of him and has expressed how much the customers appreciate his commitment. Bryan has set career goals while working with this company. He currently works 20 hours per week as a grocery clerk and is pursuing additional hours and becoming a food demonstrator. With Bryan’s determination and warm personality, challenges will never prevent him from accomplishing his goals. “Our graduation ceremonies are always very inspiring,” adds Haas. “ARC Broward is glad to have made a difference in the lives of those we serve and will continue to find new ways to reach out to people with disabilities and other life challenges.” For more information about ARC Broward and its children’s programs, please visit www.arcbroward.com or call 954-746-9400.

through hands-on community work experience at local nonprofit organizations as part of the Bank of America’s Student Leaders® program. The summer internship at the YMCA of South Florida offers the young adults
a chance to learn civic, social and business leadership skills and the critical role nonprofits play in the community. The students, made up of juniors and seniors, were selected to participate in the annual program in recognition of their community service efforts and academic achievements. Maxine and her peers created a class for youth at the YMCA to teach them the importance of exercise and nutrition. They set up Yoga, Nutrition and Health stations where the young ones were able to interactively learn these healthy habit skills. In addition, these select individuals from Broward County had the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. to join more than 200 other Bank of America Student Leaders from around the country for a week-long Leadership Summit. They were able to participate in skillbuilding workshops, a service learning project, sessions to develop better money spending habits and meet with Members of Congress during their summer term. “I met many people throughout this program whom were different than I from their looks to their religion,” says Delacruz. “However, each and every one of them shared the same goal I have
which is to make a change.” This volunteerism is an opportunity for the students to gain work experience early on, which is one way Bank of America is helping Broward County youth prepare for tomorrow’s competitive job market. The bank is giving young people the aspirations, the skills and the confidence to make the most of opportunities available to them. “Our Student Leaders Program is so much more than an internship, it is an effort to give young professionals the tools to be successful adults, make responsible financial decisions, experience the gift of nonprofit work and ultimately prepare them to lead and transform their community,” said Lori Chevy, Fort Lauderdale Market President, Bank of America. Since 2004, the program has supported 2,200 young people nationwide.

Her efforts do not cease as she continues to be involved in saving the Hollywood Playhouse, being informed and engaged in the redevelopment of local areas such as the parcels on Adams Street which previously housed a 4-story, drug infested building. For many years, Chervin has been responsible for organizing groups to gather school supplies and backpacks. Hollywood resident for almost four decades recently received one of Hollywood’s prestigious honors – the Charles F. Vollman Award. Helen Chervin, President of The United Neighbors of South Hollywood Civic Association, works tirelessly to uplift the community and those that surround it as well as its residents. The distinguished award is named the cofounder of the Park East Civic Association and former President of the Hollywood Council of Civic Associations, Charles “Chuck” F. Vollman. The late individual demonstrated a passion for his community and building relationships with local neighbors and government officials alike. Vollman believed in building a strong society with dedication and integrity. In 2008, he was the first recipient of his namesake award after being honored with the Meritorious Service Award by the Hollywood City Commission and Fire Chief Virgil Fernandez for his services on the Citizens’ Emergency Response Team. Much like Vollman, Chervin not only plays an active role in her position within the association, she is extremely active throughout the community and beyond. She is known to be available whenever a need arises and she works closely with her City Commissioner, the police department’s Neighborhood Team Leader and the neighborhood code compliance officer. She also volunteers for many community events, including those from other
residents who are in need of assistance. She will go out of her way to collect and deliver food to residents with limited means of transportation, and she will also arrange transportation for those that want to attend civic meetings. “Helen continues to be a strong voice for the community at City Hall and pushes through personal pain and sacrifice, never wavering from her goal, that one day this community and its residents will be more than just a diamond in the rough,” says friend and Hollywood Historical Society President, Karen Albertson.

University tuition and fees have increased approximately two times the inflation rate with the average cost of a private four year college education exceeding $198,770 for a student starting next year. There is good news that several options are available to help prepare for this important milestone, including 529 college savings plans which have revolutionized the way for investors to save for college. With these plans, there is flexibility and control, providing benefits that other education savings programs do not offer. Firstly, money deposited into a 529 savings plan accumulates free of federal taxes, as long as the funds are used for qualified college expenses. In various states throughout the country, additional tax incentives are offered. Secondly, you maintain complete control over how the funds will be used. If the individual does not wind up attending college, the beneficiary can be changed to someone else. An adult can even name themselves as a beneficiary and take classes at a local college, or earn an additional degree. In terms of dollar amounts, the annual gift tax exclusion is $14,000 per individual. This IRS rule allows contributors to fund a 529 account as per the maximum amounts mentioned. For those who want to give a one-time gift, or help a future college student’s fund catch up, an individual can gift $70,000 to treat the contribution as if it were made over a five year period. A one-time gift of this amount for a new baby or young child has the potential to grow to cover all related expenses for a four year university. This includes state colleges, private universities, a semester abroad or even an accredited international institution. Many students now-a-days have opportunities to travel to another country for a semester or a year which not only allows them to study, but also to experience other cultures and open their eyes to the world. The experience is amazing, but it can come with a cost that some parents didn’t plan for. Utilizing a 529 savings plan can make financial sense. If there is a good chance that a child in the family will be attending college, setting up a 529 savings plan is an advantaged financial vehicle to allow your money to grow tax free. College expenses are high, growing and proper planning for the future can benefit you and your family. * The College Board (2016), IRS.gov Arnold Kovelman is a Financial Advisor with Morgan Stanley located at 20807 Biscayne Blvd., Aventura. oo much of a good thing is not always the best. Moderation in life results in the ideal balance in many facets of our lives. This holds true for cosmetic surgery as well. From noninvasive treatments to plastic surgery procedures, moderation is the approach I feel yields the best long term aesthetic results. From celebrities to people in our local community, we have all seen the overdone, over-filled or excessively pulled face that resembles an aquatic animal or alien life form more than a natural aesthetic enhanced face or body. The most common mistake is the over-injected face and mouth. When fillers are excessively injected to improve facial lines and wrinkles the natural contours of the face become distorted. Too much Botox or Dysport can leave a patient with a flat, waxy appearing forehead or brow and a motionless masklike face. The fish mouth or duck lips result from exaggerated injections of soft tissue fillers in and around the mouth. Soft tissue fillers, such as Juvéderm and Restylane, should be injected to fill lines and creases and restore volume where is has been lost throughout the aging process. It is the physician’s responsibility to know when enough is enough with regard to appropriate injection volume. Facial skin laxity or looseness can’t be treated with fillers alone. Skin tightening, such as performed during a facelift, is necessary to lift and achieve the optimal cosmetic result in cases when soft tissue fillers are not sufficient. More filler does not tighten excess facial and neck skin. When facelift surgery is indicated, the technique utilized should be individualized according to the patient’s anatomy. Excessively large breast implants and oversized buttocks enhancement will lead to long term problems for these patients. Breast implant volume is ideally determined by careful measurement of a woman’s anatomy, including breast width, height, soft tissue thickness and stretch. Bigger is not always better. Think moderation and individualized enhancement to achieve the ideal aesthetic improvements. The excessively large, wide buttock from large volume fat transfers or B.B.L. will eventually need to be reduced at some point in that person’s life, as the effects of aging and gravity results in a large, sagging buttock. It is up to the physician, as the professional, to help guide a potential patient to make the appropriate decision to achieve best cosmetic enhancement. I highly recommend that any individual who is considering plastic surgery or any cosmetic procedure consult with a physician who is board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) organization, such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery with documented experience prior to proceeding. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care.
