Happy Halloween

I

f your family is like mine, Halloween is one of your kids’ favorite holidays. This seems a bit strange to me, when you think about the origins of this holiday. The word Halloween is a contraction for All Hallow’s Eve, a Christian day of remembrance believed to have been established in the 8th century by Pope Gregory III. It was a quiet somber day. So, how did we get from silently meditating about dead saints to carving pumpkins, overeating candy and dressing up like our favorite super-villain or princess? The answer, it seems, is that like many modern holidays, Halloween is actually an amalgamation of a number of different traditions. Historians believe that many of our current Halloween customs have their roots in the British Isles. In the 16th century, youths in parts of Ireland and Scotland would go from house to house impersonating old spirits. They would threaten mischief if they were not greeted and offered food. This is where the phrase “Trick or Treat” originated. Over time, these mostly Pagan traditions became commercialized to become the Halloween we know today: a day when children dress up as superheroes and collect candy; a time when teens participate in, hopefully, harmless pranks; and a night when young adults frequent parties, dressed as any number of things. However you chose to celebrate, have a Happy Halloween! Sincerely,

Terry Jaillet President & Publisher

BaDa Bing, South Florida’s Italian Festival Returns! community news

By Beverly Perkins

T

he South Florida Italian Culture & Heritage Festival (aka “SoFlaFeast”) will be coming back to Hollywood this month for its second year. The much anticipated event will be held on October 8th at ArtsPark at Young Circle. The festival was the organized by Joe Bevelacqua and Anthony Paparella along with the cooperation of the City of Hollywood and Marketing Manager Carmella Gambino. The mission was to develop a festival that highlights the best of Italian and Italian American culture in the region while creating an annual tradition that will continue for many more years. The festival will coincide with Columbus Day celebrations since Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who made major contributions to our nation. This celebration will showcase the many ties South Florida has to Italy’s twenty diverse regions. The event will feature local Italian restaurants, grocery stores, businesses and organizations who will share their Italian heritage with the community, as well as live entertainment, and of course, delicious Italian food and pastries with beer and wine tastings. The entire famiglia is encouraged to attend since there is something for every age group. From activities such as playing traditional Italian games like Bocce to shopping multiple art and jewelry vendors. An entire area dedicated for children by Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital will feature face painting, games and plenty of treats for kids and tweens. South Florida’s DJ Rockin’ Rich Bedford will emcee while musical acts will be performing throughout the day on stage including performances by this year’s “Star Search” winners. This new Joe Bevelacqua and Carmella Gambino addition, organized by Bevelacqua and

Spanky and Dino

Gambino, had contestants competing against each other during the past several months at restaurants across South Florida. These crooners and songbirds had to sing a song originally performed by an Italian singer or they had to sing in Italian to win the coveted title and privilege to perform at this year’s festival. Hollywood’s legendary duo, Spanky and Dino will perform and open for the headliner, Emil Stucchio & The Classics. The sophisticated trio have over 50 years of experience and are known for singing fifties, standards and Italian combined with today’s sounds, plus adding a comedic twist to every show. Various local nonprofit cultural organizations that work to support Italian culture will also be honored. The South Florida Italian Culture & Heritage Festival will take place on Sunday, October 8th from 12:00pm-9:00pm at ArtsPark at Young Circle on Hollywood Blvd. at U.S. 1 in Hollywood. For more information email: info@soflaitalianfestival.com. Proceeds from the SoFlaFeast will directly benefit the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH). For information on Star Search 2017 contact Carmella Gambino at festivalsinflorida@gmail.com.

I

t’s that time of year when the sun sets earlier, the slight change in temperature becomes apparent, and October’s signature holiday is right around the corner. Although, the leaves will not be changing colors and the smell of fall will not be in the air, many Florida residents still enjoy the season and their pumpkin spice lattes. Most locals, big and small, especially get into the seasonal spirit towards the end of the month when Halloween celebrations and activities pop up all over town. Beginning on October 20th and running through October 22nd, those interested can choose the perfect pumpkin, take photos and play in an old fashioned patch at the 4th Annual Curci House Pumpkin Patch located at 324 SW 2nd Avenue in Hallandale Beach. The annual event at the historical landmark offers pumpkins of all sizes to carve and/or use for decoration. All proceeds will go to restore Hallandale Beach’s historic structures. Once the pumpkins are purchased, it’s time to start thinking about costumes, parties and trick-or-treating. Hollywood’s 2nd Annual Downtown Halloween Celebration promises to be even bigger this year, as both sides of Hollywood Blvd. between 19th and 20th streets are closed for a super-sized block party. Early in the night from 6-9pm, the little ones can enjoy “Treat Street”. The interactive trick-or-treat area is free and offers plenty of candy stations, face painting, balloon twisters, a costume contest and kid friendly entertainment. Later that evening from 9pm-2am, the “Hollyweird” Block Party begins for the 21 and over

crowd. The local business community is also getting involved this year. Whiskey Tango, Mickey Byrne’s, The Greek Joint, Spice RestoLounge and Octopus Garden Bar will provide six stages with live music and entertainment. There is no cover charge, but the opportunity to purchase food and drinks. It’s encouraged to dress to impress as adult costume contests with categories such as: best group, sexiest, scariest and best overall can win cash and prizes valued at over $10,000. For those that want to continue the festivities, The City of Hallandale Beach will host their annual event on October 31st. The City of Hallandale Beach Halloween Festival welcomes all ages for a fun-filled night of celebration. Games, costume contest, bounce houses, entertainment and candy will be free to Hallandale Beach residents at Peter Bluesten Park. For more information on these events, please see the calendar on page 6 for more specific details.

Pirates Are Dropping Their Anchor on Hollywood Beach for the 13th Annual Fairy Tale Ball By Beverly Perkins

A

little bit over a decade ago a special group of volunteers at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation spent their time advocating and raising funds for the hospital to reinforce its’ mission to heal an individual’s body, mind and spirit. These volunteers, appropriately called The Diamond Angels, have raised more than 4.2 million dollars since its inception. Their main event, The Fairy Tale Ball, supports children, families,

programs, services, and facilities at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. The Diamond Angels are proud to announce the 13th Annual Fairy Tale Ball. The adventurous theme this year is “Pirates of the Caribbean”. The grand fundraiser will be held on Saturday, November 19th at 7:00pm on the ocean at the Diplomat Resort & Spa in Hollywood. The evening will include a cocktail reception, dinner, dancing, an auction of dream vacations and unique experiences, and a live concert. Although the headliner is not yet announced, previous year’s headliners included members of Santana, Journey, Starship, Grand Funk Railroad, and the Romantics. Last year the American rock band KANSAS performed for an enthu-

siastic crowd. No doubt, this year also promises great entertainment. In addition to an incredible evening, attendees will hear the emotional story of the event ambassador. This young person will share their personal journey from sickness to health during the night. “We’re committed to making things better for those in our community coping with pediatric health issues,” said Fairy Tale Ball Chair Amanda Gisler of the volunteer Diamond Angels that annually host the event. “The gala definitely has something for everyone and the impact of all our efforts is significant and long-lasting.” Sponsors for the 2016 event include Ultimate Software, Duty Free Americas, PNC Bank, Sheridan Healthcare, and the Auberge Beach Residences & Spa Fort Lauderdale. Tax deductible tickets to “Pirates of the Caribbean” are $250 each through October 31st and $300 thereafter. Purchase at www.diamondangels. org or by calling 954-265-3454. The Diplomat Resort & Spa is located at 3555 S. Ocean Drive in Hollywood.

Express Yourself – Artistic Expression Wanted for Exhibition community news

By Beverly Perkins

T

he City of Hollywood is known for its history and its beaches, but may best be known for its unique eclectic artistic vibe. Visitors and residents alike enjoy monthly exhibits around town along with concerts and festivals at ArtsPark. One can find art displayed on walls throughout the distinctive community, at galleries during ArtWalk, as well as a regular change of installations at the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood. However, one popular program, Art in Public Spaces, invites Florida artists to apply for participation in the decade old event. This ongoing series of exhibitions at Hollywood City Hall and ArtsPark at Young Circle is chosen by The Artwork Selection Committee. This committee was created by the City Commission to review, select and display appropriate artwork, including photography, loaned or donated to the City of Hollywood for exhibition in the city. Every month or two the committee gathers to review the submissions. “The City of Hollywood is committed to showcasing works of art in public spaces as a creative service to our community,” says Joann Hussey, Public Information Manager for The City of Hollywood. “This program is not only a great way to beautify and brighten City Hall, the Fred Lippman Multi-Purpose Center or ArtsPark at Young Circle Gallery, it’s also a great way to highlight the amazing talent in our community and inspire new artists to explore their creativity.” Most recently, Larry Joe Miller, Artist in Residence at Hollywood’s ArtsPark, was selected to feature his artwork at The City of Hollywood City Hall. Larry Joe’s Gallery in ArtsPark is well known for its daily fine art exhibitions and shows, art classes and free monthly painting events for Hollywood residents. His art reflects his visions of both down to earth local landscapes and his faraway vision of the world in another place or time.

Miracle League Baseball Opening Day Was a Home Run! By Beverly Perkins

wheelchairs. It’s also painted green and white to create the appearance of grass and base striping. Players from the Flannigan High School baseball team and their coach Ray Evans will also be serving as “buddies” to each of the players on the field. The Miracle League was formed in 1998 by Coach Eddie Bagwell of the Rockdale Youth Baseball Association (RYBA) in Atlanta. This organization was the first of its’ kind with a mission to provide opportunities for all children to play baseball regardless of their ability. He recognized the need that disabled children wanted to play just like those without disabilities. These children also wanted uniforms, to play in the field and get around the bases. The idea was a hit as others in the community got involved to assist players and give their support. Participation grew as the magnitude of need was recognized. Mainstream children who play local youth sports, high school students and anyone else that wanted to help special needs individuals were recruited to be “buddies” to the players.

A proper sports complex was then built to satisfy the needs of the players. The custom designed field was created with a cushioned rubberized turf to help prevent injuries and to make wheelchairs accessible. Upon completion in April of 2000, the rosters had grown to over 100 players and continues to grow across the country. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital has given the Miracle League full support to operate an official regular season that began in August and concludes in November with a World Series game. Players receive a full uniform, provided by the hospital. Mario Salceda, Administrator, Memorial Physicians Group, Memorial Healthcare System, serves as head coach for the team.

Local Gym Owner Packs a Punch in the Community

B

orn and raised in Brooklyn, Jose “Flaco” Perez isn’t the stereotypical gym owner with big muscles, a big attitude and a big accent. This native New Yorker is known in Hollywood for his big heart. For the third year, Flaco’s Community Gym teamed up with Oakridge Elementary School. Perez wanted to work again with Eddie Aguilar, former Vice Principal of West Hollywood Elementary and now current Principal at Oakridge. The dynamic duo organized a back to school event, “Thai’s Bookbag Giveaway”. “I am lucky enough to have built a relationship with Mr. Eddie Aguilar, who is interested in being more than just a great principal, but actually a help to the entire community,” says Perez. “I did not have to reach too far to find others that were interested in giving back either. I myself Jose “Flaco” Perez feel blessed to be surrounded by so many great individuals.” The event was combined with the Oakridge parent orientation, although anyone in the community was welcome to attend. Flaco’s Community Gym donated 100 backpacks stocked with school supplies to children in need. Perez also recruited some local area professionals who also donated their time and services. Sam Payne, owner of Big Time Barber Shop, gave free haircuts, Dr. Michelle C. Powell and her partner offered free physicals, CEO of The Florida Academy

of Professional Mediators, Stanley Zamor gave an anti-bullying presentation, Attorney Andell K. Brown offered legal services, and Superbowl XLVII champion and former UM football player Bryant McKinnie interacted with the children. A DJ played some tunes while kids in the boxing, martial arts and kickboxing classes presented an exhibition demonstrating their skills. In addition to being at Flaco’s Community Gym each day it is open, Perez is a full-time R.N. at Jackson North Emergency Room in North Miami Beach. This father of one, and soon to be two, works as hard as his own father did to support his family and he shares his dedication of family with his members. He is sensitive to financial issues and has fair prices. Furthermore, he also has been known to sponsor families in need. He never turns away an interested family, but rather help figure out what they can afford to be a part of his program. “Moving forward, I am hoping to continue to contribute to the community, grow and be an even greater help to the community,” adds Perez. “The dream, and projected plan, is to one day expand into a true community center, a place with a gym, tutoring center, and recreation room, a place that can be a positive environment for whole families and not just for the kids.”

Keep Working or Retire? What the Heck, I’m already in Paradise! ask the expert

Are You Still Paying Too Much For Your Medications?

Their Price

By Arnold Kovelman Financial Advisor, Wealth Management

W

hile many baby boomers had entered the workforce in the 70’s and 80’s with the anticipation of being retired by age 65, many Floridians do not. This is due to several reasons outlined below. Workaholics and those who love what they do are a big reason. Let’s take Mary as an example. Mary has worked for the same medical practice for over 25 years. While she may have worked for a few companies earlier in her career, she found a workplace she was comfortable in, enjoyed what she did, was given benefits, and the opportunity to make an impact at her company. Retirement is certainly on her mindset, but she also likes to stay busy and the thought of not working and losing a steady income is not one that sits well with her. Health insurance is another important factor to consider. In the U.S., the share of GDP proportionate to health care spending rose from 9% of GDP in 1980, nearly doubling to 17% of GDP in 2015, according to The World Bank. Looking at the data comprised from 211 countries, the United States was the second highest in terms of money spent for health care expenditure s per GDP. When an employer is offering suitable health care coverage, it’s an excellent benefit to have which not only offers you the insurance, but also reduces what you would wind up paying for coverage as an individual and reduces doctors’ bills. On a typical day, more than half of the people I encounter are originally not from Florida. Many of them are from the northeast, and with approximately 50,000 New Yorkers moving to Florida each year, that shouldn’t come as a surprise. Snow in April isn’t for everybody. When an individual or family decides to move to Florida and make their life here, they soon realize they are in paradise. You don’t need to wait until the weather gets nicer to go play golf, hit the beach, barbeque outside or take a walk on the boardwalk. When it is realized that you can do these activities most days of the year, it hits you that you are in paradise! Many individuals who are at the age of retirement plan to work longer and continue to earn income. At the present time, the full benefit age is 66 for those born between 1943 – 1954, and will eventually rise to 67 for those born in 1960 or later. Currently, an individual could begin early retirement at the age of 62, but have a permanent reduction to 80 percent of the full benefit amount. On the flip side, an individual will receive an additional 8 percent benefit for every year he or she delays to collect benefits, according to the National Academy of Social Insurance. As an example, if the individual waited until age 70, the benefit would be 32 percent higher with a maximum benefit of $3,501 per month in 2015. TENDERNESS

By Mayor Peter Bober

mayor’s column

A

s my final term as your Mayor nears completion, my mind naturally has become reflective. For me, being in politics has been truly wonderful. From growing up and walking two blocks to Hollywood Hills Elementary School, to riding my bike to Rotary Park, I simply never could have imagined I would one day become the leader of a City with almost 145,000 people. Wow! What I never would have expected were all the meaningful friendships I made—from people whose doors I knocked on, asking for a vote—to all the great, hardworking employees I have worked with at City Hall—and foremost, all the citizens who worked with me to move this City in a positive direction. I am so grateful. I am also appreciative to all the great city commissioners I worked with over the years who, as part of a team effort, moved Hollywood, forward. A very special “thank you” goes out to my parents, Fran and Larry Bober. The next best thing after getting to become Mayor, is to have your parents alive to actually see the day. They are proud of me, and I am so proud of them—especially my dad. To think he came to the United States from Cuba with virtually nothing, made the best decision on his life in marrying my mother Fran, raised four boys, and built a life here in Hollywood, is truly amazing. A big “thank you” is also due to my wife, Samara. I cannot overstate her importance in this whole thing, and the level of sacrifice she has put in at home and at work so I could pursue public service. If it were not for her love, support, (and juggling ability), being in political office simply would not have been possible. I love her very much and appreciate all she has done. Come this November, Hollywood will choose a new mayor. The stakes could not be higher, and who you choose matters greatly. This City will fail or succeed based in large part on whether the next head honcho can provide new, fresh leadership—not a return to failed policies of the past. Anybody running for office can promise the moon, sun, and stars like “lower taxes, better infrastructure, more police, better schools.” There is no disagreement that those are great goals, but talk is cheap. The question for any person running for office, at any level of government is, can they articulate a workable plan for accomplishing what they propose (assuming they propose more than just fluff and campaign slogans). Indeed, if a candidate promises lower taxes you’d better ask them what specific cuts do they propose to offset the reductions in revenue, and determine if the two numbers match. More police? Great. Better roads? Super. Now, what’s the plan to pay for it, or are they offering “fuzzy math”?

ccording to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery operations in our country. Patients will often come to our office wanting their breasts to be fuller and are not certain which type of surgery is best for them. Is an implant necessary, or lift, or both? The technique used to enhance a woman’s breast should be individualized based on each woman’s personal appearance goals and unique anatomy. A common misconception is that breast implants make a woman’s breast stay up longer and not sag. This is not true. A breast implant adds volume or size to the breast. An implant can increase breast width, projection, and firmness, but doesn’t prevent the breast from sagging with time, especially if a woman doesn’t wear a bra. When a woman loses breast tissue volume or size as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, or through natural deficiency in breast development, then placing a breast implant beneath the glandular tissue or under the muscle (pectoralis) will enhance the appearance. When there is excess breast skin, such that the nipple and areolar position is now below the fold of the breast, then a breast lift or mastopexy is most likely necessary. This procedure involves removing the excess skin and tightening the remaining breast tissue to elevate or lift the nipple and areola and the breast itself. The type of mastopexy procedure utilized depends on the shape and the degree of sagging (or ptosis). There are three main types of breast lifts depending on where the incisions are placed on the breast. They are periareolar (Benelli, around the nipple only), circumvertical (lollipop, around the nipple and from the nipple to the fold), and inverted “T” (anchor incision, same as above, with an additional incision along the inframammary crease or fold). All are safe and effective techniques for lifting the breast depending on the degree of sagging. A breast augmentation and mastopexy can be safely performed at the same time, depending on the patient’s anatomy and individual history. An implant can improve the aesthetic appearance of the breasts when volume or size enhancement is necessary, in addition to skin tightening or lifting. In general terms, if a patient is an A or small B cup bra with sagging breast tissue, a breast lift and implant would be beneficial if the patient desires an increase in breast size or projection. When a patient’s breasts are a full C or D cut, then the breast lift alone may be sufficient depending on her individual breast appearance goals. As with facial rejuvenation and body contouring, there is no single breast enhancement procedure that is applicable to every patient. A thorough preoperative consultation and discussion of each woman’s individual appearance goals is essential to ensuring the proper surgery technique is performed. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. Sheridan Technical College Partners with General Motors community news

By Beverly Perkins

S

heridan Technical College started the school year full speed ahead with their engines roaring and ready to go. They received the green light to partner with one of the nation’s well-known automotive giants, General Motors (GM). The Detroit based global company responsible for manufacturing brands such as Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac will now be part of the Broward County Schools’ program to train highly skilled automotive technicians through the GM Automotive Service Educational Program (ASEP). Sheridan Technical College already has extensive options for those wanting to learn more about automotive technology. Students may choose if they want to specialize in collision repair or learn state-of-the-art automotive service repair techniques. Those looking for a two-year associate degree may select their Ford ASSET program which incorporates a solid foundation in automotive service technology, mechanical and academic skills combined with hands-on learning. Additionally, a career automotive program is available to those that desire an entry level position in the field while working towards their certification. The new GM ASEP training program combines state of the art automotive service, academic coursework, and real world internship experiences to provide students the best possible preparation for a career as an automotive technician. The program, formerly at Broward College, incorporates advanced automotive technical training with a strong academic foundation of math, reading and electronics, as well as analytical and technical skills using GM products. Sheridan Technical College GM ASEP instructors are National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence certified and many have achieved GM World Class status, the highest achievement for a GM technician.

Sheridan Technical College students in the program alternate between the classroom and hands-on work experience at sponsoring GM dealership worksites. Students learn how to identify, analyze and solve complex automotive problems. While other colleges provide a generic auto mechanics program, Sheridan Technical College in partnership with GM provides the in-depth training needed in today’s high tech automotive world. “We’re very proud of our long history of providing training and career opportunities for the community that remain on the cutting edge of technology,” said Robert Boegli, Sheridan Technical College Director. “This new partnership with GM recognizes the longstanding success that Sheridan Technical College has had in the field of automotive technician training, and our success in developing a generation of modern automotive technicians, instructors, service advisors, service managers and business owners.” Sheridan Technical College has received numerous awards, honors, Skills USA winner recognitions, and is a state leader in industry certifications. For additional information, contact Sheridan Technical College at 754321-5400 or visit SheridanTechnicalCollege.edu.

A Night at the Museum By Beverly Perkins

C

olbert Museum Magnet presents its first STEM Museum Night of the 2016-2017 school year this month. Wednesday, October 19th from 5:30-7:30 pm parents, caregivers, relatives and friends are all invited to see what accomplishments these cougars have achieved in such a short period of time thus far. Colbert Museum Magnet is one of six elementary schools in Broward County awarded a Magnet Schools of America Grant in October 2013. Within the past three years Colbert has developed a whole school museum magnet program that delivers rigorous curriculum to prepare learners for 21st century challenges and opportunities. Students use engineering practices to create, build, and design solutions as they discover academics in a new enriching manner. Throughout the year students in grades K-5 work on problem based learning units and engineering design challenges. For example, 4th grade students studying Florida resources and issues such as beach erosion and sinkholes are provided a real life problem to solve. In this instance, the unit is titled “Hotel Havoc”. Students act as property owners of a hotel and must find a solution to keep their hotel intact. Throughout the lessons, students are exposed not only to Florida science standards, but true-life problems engineers are hired to solve. From being given a “budget” and having to choose which of the hotel’s problems are in need of immediate action, to then brainstorming possible solutions, students are placed in critical thinking roles that engineers face daily within their jobs.

OCTOBER 2016 | OUR CITY Hollywood

At the end of each quarter Colbert hosts a museum night to showcase student developed exhibits that display thematic and engineering units that they have been learning in class. Visitors will be able to view the beach erosion models and see demonstrations of how sinkholes form and what destruction they cause. “Our Museum Nights offer our students an opportunity to showcase what they have learned in an authentic format - something so different than a standardized test. Over the course of study, our students are actively engaged in research and experimentation that requires them to work cooperatively and work through the engineering design process,” says Colbert Museum Magnet Principal Patricia D. Yackel. “During our exhibition nights, students take the lead as our docents and present their projects to the community- it’s exciting to hear them describe what their challenge was, how they worked through it, and what they discovered - the good and/or the bad!” “Our goal is to prepare world class learners that will be ready for STEM careers which are some of the fastest growing fields of the future,” says Chentel Neat, STEM Magnet Coordinator at Colbert Elementary. Museum Night is Wednesday, October 19th from 5:30-7:30pm. Colbert Museum Magnet is located at 2702 Funston Street, Hollywood.

Junior Kindergarten: Setting the Foundation for Success

F

or decades, NSU University School has been providing exceptional early education programs for students as young as 4-years old in our accredited Lower School. Junior Kindergarten is designed to set the stage for a life-long love of learning and provide our youngest students with a strategic advantage as they begin their educational journey. NSU University School offers a student-centered, safe, and caring environment where young minds can flourish and grow, and where students’ individual needs come first. Passionate and well-qualified educators capitalize on our innovative classroom design and exceptional resources to facilitate collaboration, active learning, and personalized instruction. School must be a place where students feel a sense of belonging and part of a bigger whole. As educators, it is our responsibility to ensure each student’s school experience is joyful and engaging. Lower School teachers guide and mentor students as they discover new realizations about the world in which they live. Daniel Pink, author of A Whole New Mind, argued the need to prepare our kids for their future, not our past. This year’s cohort of Junior Kindergarten will finish college and enter the workforce in the year 2034! As a school, we are preparing our students for a world we cannot imagine, and to do the jobs computers cannot. Children need to learn to think, to create and design, to collaborate with one another, to communicate orally and in the written form, to be good global citizens, and find solutions to problems.

They are fully engaged in our daily academic programming, but also in other distinguished programs including music, Spanish and French, the arts, athletics, robotics, coding, engineering, theatre, and have the opportunity to engage in a myriad of co-curricular and elective activities. Our emotionally nurturing environment creates an atmosphere for building self-confidence, developing social skills, and establishing friendships, all while emphasizing good citizenship both in and out of the classroom. The Lower School’s positive culture is critically important to a successful school experience for our students. When children are eager to come to school in the morning, the rest falls into place. “Macy” Pet of the month Macy is a 4 year old Havanese. Her favorite people are her three human sisters, and her favorite toy is a plush fish. Just like any little girl she likes to be accessorized, but dislikes getting tangles taken out of her hair. Her favorite thing to do is take car rides and have the wind in her face. She was last seen sporting a princess tiara.
