Happy Thanksgiving
W
ith the Halloween sugar rush slowly wearing off and the holiday season upon us, we take a deep breath and wonder where the time went. In the blink of an eye, the entire year seems to have gone by. Another year of our kids growing up and becoming young adults, of family, friends and togetherness, of being there for each other and enjoying each other’s companionship. When we sit down this month with our loved ones from near and far to indulge in a traditional Thanksgiving feast, let’s give thanks for all the little blessings we have received throughout the year. This holiday season, reach out to your friends, neighbors, co-workers and the less fortunate. Consider opening your heart (and maybe your wallet) to help to provide a holiday meal for those in need.

PARK(ing) Day – Creating Parking Spaces into Parks Community News
By Beverly Perkins
P
ARK(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event which originated in San Francisco 10 years ago. A San Fran art and design studio, Rebar, converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in the downtown area and since then it’s evolved into a global movement. Artists, designers, activists and citizens transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks the third Friday in September on this nationally dedicated day. The mission is to create awareness of the need for more urban open space, to provoke conversation about how public space is allocated and to improve the quality of human habitat… at least until the meter runs out. Cities large and small may participate as these “PARKS” can be set up on busy streets, suburban lanes, city blocks and even supermarket parking lots. Last year 21 countries engaged in this event including our very own. The City of Hollywood began participating last year with a location at Barry University. This year they expanded their efforts to two locations with the second one on the ever popular Harrison Street in Hollywood’s Downtown District. The
City is exploring new ways to use public space by creating social spaces like parks in parking spaces. Many of these fun and creative pop-up projects can be extensions to local businesses. For example, restaurants can use these parallel parklets as outdoor cafes. Since its’ inception, these parklets have advanced from the basic tree, sod and bench prototype to free health clinics, temporary urban farms, political platforms, art installations, bicycle repair shops and even a venue for a wedding ceremony. The City of Hollywood is looking forward to seeing this economic development grow each year as they are allowing businesses to get permits and invest in making these pop-up spaces permanent. The Rebar Group says that, “In addition to being quite a bit of fun, PARK(ing) Day has effectively re-valued the metered parking space as an important part of the commons – a site for generosity, cultural expression, socializing and play. And although the project is temporary, we hope PARK(ing) Day inspires you to participate in the civic processes that permanently alter the urban landscape.”
Kansas to Headline the 12th Annual Fairy Tale Ball By Beverly Perkins
T
he Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation recently announced that the headliner for the 12th Annual Fairy Tale Ball is secured. The evening which features a cocktail reception, dinner, dancing and auction will now be adding classic rock to the menu. KANSAS, one of the most popular rock & roll bands of the ‘70s and ‘80s will take the stage to perform their hits for the guests attending this incredible yearly fundraiser. The event takes place on Saturday, November 21st at the Diplomat Resort & Spa in Hollywood.
The multi-platinum group is known for the classic rock standards “Carry On Wayward Son”, “Point of No Return” and “Dust in the Wind”. They have produced eight gold albums, three sextuple-Platinum albums (over six million in sales), one platinum live album, a million-selling gold single, charted on Billboard for over 200 weeks, and played arenas and stadiums on three continents. KANSAS will be a great complement to this year’s New Orleans themed evening. Proceeds from the event will benefit expansion projects at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital that include the Wasie Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, emergency department, and the addition of four capacity-building floors to the Hollywood facility. Tickets for the Fairy Tale Ball, hosted by the Diamond Angels of the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation and sponsored in part by the Diplomat Resort & Spa and Ultimate Software, are $250 per person. Additional sponsors include Sheridan Healthcare, Duty Free Americas, PNC Bank, and the Memorial Healthcare System. To purchase tickets, visit www.diamondangels.org. Connect with Kate Rodriguez at (954) 265-3454 and ksnyder@mhs.net for sponsorship opportunities. Established in 1994, the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation provides philanthropic support to JDCH by serving as the central agency for charitable contributions. This helps to ensure the ongoing availability of the highest quality of healthcare to hospital patients regardless of their ability to pay. For more information, visit www.jdchfoundation.org.

Hollywood Celebrates 90 Years! Community News
By Beverly Perkins
N
inety five years ago a visionary named Joseph Wesley Young came to an unincorporated and undeveloped land filled with pine forests, palmetto plants, tangled undergrowth and low lying marshland in South Florida in search of creating his “Dream City in Florida”. This original one square mile of farmland has now grown to over 28.87 square miles and has become the second-most populated city in Broward County and the ninth largest city in the state. On November 28th, 1925 the City of Hollywood was formally incorporated and is celebrating its 90th birthday this month. Throughout November the City will be celebrating with various official 90th birthday events. The first is a Historic Guided Walking Tour of Downtown Hollywood. This self-guided tour, hosted by the Hollywood Historical Society in partnership with the Community Redevelopment Agency, will showcase over 40 proper-
ties along the streets of Hollywood. Those that attend will learn the history of how the city has grown over the years and enjoy viewing historical photos dating back to 1925. Ticket price includes a commemorative tote bag and keepsake brochure of the walking tour. Also, this month’s Downtown Hollywood Dream Car Classic which features dozens of classic cars, trucks and other vehicles of interest will give special recognition to all vehicles participating from the 1920’s. Attendance is always free and the Top 30 vehicles will be awarded prizes and one will receive the coveted ‘People’s Choice Award’. Other “Official 90th Birthday Celebration” events include the Food Trucks at ArtsPark, Funtastic Friday at ArtsPark, ArtsPark Movie Night, 5th Annual Veterans Day Barbeque, Veterans Day Concert, Hollywood Beach Sweep Clean-up, Hollywood West Concert Series, Margaritaville Beach Event, Global Meditation
for World Peace, Holiday Tree Display at ArtsPark Gallery, Holiday Tree Lighting, Downtown Hollywood ArtWalk, Food Drive at Washington Park, Full Moon Drum Circle and Small Business Saturday. However, the big highlight is the Concert at ArtsPark. This celebratory concert on November 21st will headline the American rock band the “Gin Blossoms” known for their first hit, “Hey Jealousy”. The opening artist performing will be Hollywood’s very own talented and dynamic band “Private Stock”. For over twenty years this local group has been entertaining all over South Florida. Admission is free and plenty of lawn seating is available. Complimentary birthday cupcakes will be served in honor of the big nine decade celebration. Be on the lookout for 90th birthday banners, bus benches and fun facts on social media outlets as well as more details on the calendar listed on page 6.

Hollywood Celebrates its Veterans and Active Duty Service Members with a Free Barbecue By Beverly Perkins
T
he City of Hollywood along with Mayor Peter Bober will honor men and women who currently serve or have served in the United States Armed Forces by hosting the “5th Annual Veterans Barbeque”. This free event will be held on Wednesday, November 11th at TY Park, 3300 N. Park Road in Hollywood from noon until 4:00pm. A traveling wall of historic military photos will also be on display as part of the City of Hollywood’s 90th Birthday Celebration. Mayor Bober started this annual tradition in 2011 when he set forth to make plans to honor United States service members. Later that year, the City of Hollywood hosted the first Veterans Barbeque. For the past 4 years, Mayor Bober has worked the grill while other members of the Hollywood City Commission joined with volunteers to serve a free barbeque lunch to local veterans, service members and their families. “I wanted to do something to make veterans and military personnel in our City feel truly special over the Veterans Day weekend,” says Mayor Bober. “I’d always see lines of people waiting to get into local parks on Veterans Day and that’s when I decided it’s not that there are too many barbecues on Veterans Day, it’s
that there aren’t enough barbeques that specifically celebrate veterans. We’ve changed that in Hollywood and each year the event gets bigger and better.” All Hollywood military personnel, veterans and their families are invited to this special event to celebrate their service. A traditional BBQ menu will be offered featuring barbeque chicken, hamburgers, baked beans, coleslaw, corn, cookies and brownies as well as an assortment of beverages. For those that want to continue the celebration, the Florida 9th District American Legion is sponsoring a Veterans Day Concert at ArtsPark at Young Circle in downtown Hollywood later that night at 7:30pm. The concert will feature the American Legion Symphonic Band and pay tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces. Admission is free and limited bench seating will be offered. Advance reservations appreciated, but not required. Please call 954-921-3404, Special Events to reserve attendance. Capacity 500 guests. Free park entrance for those attending the barbecue.
Hollywood’s Historical Society Preserves the Past for The Future By Beverly Perkins
A
s the City of Hollywood prepares to celebrate its’ 90th birthday, there has been no one better to document its’ years than the Hollywood Historical Society. This nonprofit cultural organization was founded and operated by volunteers since 1974. They are headquartered at the historic Hammerstein House at 1520 Polk Street in Hollywood. The Hammerstein House was designed by Bayard Lukens, a prominent Hollywood architect, in 1935 for Vera and Clarence Hammerstein. The home is an example of what Lukens called “Tropical Modern” with its’ variegated tile roof, smooth curving entrance wall, beautifully detailed interior and decorative Cuban and Spanish tiles. In 1987, at the age of ninety-two the World War I pilot left this house to the City of Hollywood in memory of his beloved wife Vera, who had predeceased him. At the rear of the home is the research center which houses memorabilia of Hollywood’s rich history. The vast collection includes over 20,000 items including bound volumes of the Hollywood Sun-Tattler newspaper, photos, maps and pamphlets. Those interested can purchase unique and memorable books, postcards, photographs, maps and posters. The center is open to the public every Friday from 10:00am-11:30am, but it’s advised you phone ahead. Complimentary tours of the historic Hammerstein home occur on the first Sunday each month from October through May from 1:00pm-4:00pm.

The mission of the Hollywood Historical Society (HHS) is to collect, preserve and disseminate information about the history of Hollywood. For the past 41 years they have preserved Hollywood’s historical resources and landmarks while educating and encouraging public awareness of Hollywood’s heritage of which they want to pass on for future generations. Various memberships are available for as little as $20. Membership levels may include advance notice of events, store discounts, newsletters, historic items, tickets to events and/or tours and recognition on the website. Besides wanting members, volunteers are always needed in various capacities. Assistance in the Research Center is always welcome. Docents for the Hammerstein House tour and tour guides for the annual home tours are also necessary. In addition, representatives for events and activities throughout the year are always in demand.

Art and Culture Center of Hollywood Celebrates 40 Years! Community News
By Beverly Perkins
T
he City of Hollywood has much to celebrate at this time of the year. The City turns 90 this month and the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood will celebrate its 40th anniversary. For the past 40 years, the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood has brought a variety of arts programming for children and adults to the South Florida area. On November 2, 1975, the Art and Culture Center opened its doors in a beachfront gallery with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. For sixteen years, the gallery attracted visitors on Hollywood Beach. In 1991 the Center moved to the city-owned, historic Kagey mansion in downtown Hollywood. This new property allowed the facility to expand its display space and to add classrooms in the adjacent Arts School for youth and adult arts education. On October 6, 2005, the Broward County Board of County Commissioners designated the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood a Major Cultural Institution in Broward County, one of eight Major Cultural Institutions in the county out of 800+ cultural entities. Recently some of the top contemporary artists in the country have spent time at the Center. Three-time Emmy winning artist Wayne White created a 12-foot puppet of Napoleon Bonaparte Broward during his summer residency to celebrate the County’s centennial’s birthday. Nathan Sawaya’s LEGO® brick creations were recently named a top ten “Must see global exhibitions” by CNN. In addition, many
other artists frequent the Center who live, work and play in South Florida. The Center’s partnership with the Broward Education Communications Network has allowed them to provide free, high-quality instruction in the visual and performing arts to over 12,000 students and 700 educators in Broward County Public Schools through a two-way videoconferencing system. Summer Arts Camp also had one of its most successful summer seasons. Between The Broadway Actors Camp and the Teen Ambassador Program sold-out shows were performed and over 2,500 volunteer hours were earned. Programs such as these and many others have been possible with the support of the City of Hollywood, the Board of Trustees, sponsors and the members who have served and helped the Center grow since 1975. The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood promises to continue offering quality exhibitions and programming to the South Florida Community for many more years to come. The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supported in part by its members, admissions, private entities, the City of Hollywood, the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council; and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture.
Just What the Doctor Ordered – Memorial Healthcare System Receives Accreditation By Beverly Perkins
H
ollywood’s Memorial Healthcare System has cleared the first hurdle by receiving institutional accreditation for graduate medical education. They are still seeking formal accreditation in specific residency programs and becoming a sponsoring teaching institution. Training medical school graduates will enable the six-hospital system to address a regional/national shortage of physicians, support the growth of high-end programs, increase patient access, and provide future doctors the access to expertise and facilities that will serve them and the profession well. This initial institutional accreditation came from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and was approved retroactively to July 1, 2015. This will allow the six-hospital system to apply for accreditation for the following residency programs: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. The next steps include submitting application for these residency programs and pursuing approval for the inaugural program, which is targeted to open in 2017. Memorial also will pursue accreditation for additional residency programs for OB/GYN and General Surgery in 2019 and Emergency Medicine in 2020. This accreditation could not have come at a better time since the state of Florida is in need of more residency programs to help meet the demand of future physicians. Nationally, Florida ranks 42 out of 50 states in terms of Graduate Medical Education spots per 100,000 populations, and a study published in 2005 by the Association of Medical Colleges estimate a shortage of physicians in the next 10 years in areas of primary care, medical and surgical specialties to the tune of 46,000 to 90,000 nationwide. Among the study’s recommendations is to sup-
16
port graduate medical education programs to help with this shortfall. “Having a graduate medical education program at Memorial Healthcare System will help to address future physician needs in our community, while supporting the development and growth of high-end clinical programs and improving patient access,” said Stanley Marks, MD, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Memorial Healthcare System. “The medical graduates who become part of our program will have access to a high caliber faculty of physicians, many of whom are considered innovators in their field. They will thrive in Memorial’s culture of quality, service and patient safety, learn many valuable lessons and gain thoughtful insights and expertise that can prepare them to become the best physicians in the future.”

Driftwood Middle School Recognized as a National Healthy School
School News
By Beverly Perkins
C
hildhood obesity ranks as one of the most talked about topics around the country. In 2005 the Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association partnered to address this important issue facing the United States. As a result of the partnership, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation was created. Their goal is to create a systematic change, not one isolated to one home, one community, one school, one industry or one state. They want to create healthy changes that build upon another to create a nation that knows how to easily make healthy choices. Just last month at the Leaders Summit in Washington DC, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation celebrated its 10 year anniversary with over 400+ schools, industry, corporate and other various partners present to note their accomplishments and discuss new ideas to further improve the health of the nation’s children. During this national Leaders Summit, Driftwood Middle School was recognized for being one of over 300 schools across the country chosen for the “Healthier Generations School Award”. As a bronze award winner, Driftwood Middle met best practices criteria established by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation Healthy Schools Program. At the helm of the advancements at Driftwood Middle School is 25 year educator, Broward County Public School Wellness Committee Member and Physical Education/Health and Wellness Magnet Teacher and Green Team Coordinator, Linda
Gancitano. She believes in John Medina’s best-selling book, Brain Rules. Brain Rule #1 is “Exercise”. An increase in oxygen has been found to boost brain power therefore increasing mental sharpness and the ability to learn. As a result, students are offered a chance to get moving before school by jump roping and dancing. Non-competitive intramural sports are also offered so all students can participate. As a magnet school for health and wellness, the curriculum is designed to start teaching nutrition, exercise and prevention in the 6th grade and then moving up to environmental wellness in 7th grade, and finally in 8th grade a more advanced health program is taught. The school has hydroponic garden beds, a green team, a wellness faculty of certified personal trainers and plenty of opportunities to get their staff, faculty and students moving. After all, the main goal is to practice what they preach. “We sometimes get lost teaching just academics and we lose site of the whole child especially in middle school,” says Linda Gancitano. “ At Driftwood Middle School, the Academy of Health and Wellness, our magnet curriculum, is designed to give our students the tools to deal with different aspects of a choosing a healthy lifestyle. Our curriculum focuses on the physical, mental, emotional, social and environmental wellness topics.” To learn more and join the movement, visit www.HealthierGeneration.org.

he Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce (GHCC) and the Hollywood Florida Scholarship Foundation (HFSF) hosted their “13th Annual Grapes for Grades” event – a soirée of Fine Wine, Gourmet Food and Live Music. The event was held Friday, September 18, 2015 at the Hollywood Beach Marriott. Approximately 300 people attended the event. “Grapes for Grades” is a Hollywood Chamber signature event benefiting the Hollywood Florida Scholarship Foundation (HFSF), a 501(c3) that provides college scholarships to deserving seniors from local Hollywood high schools and helps to finance their pursuit of higher education. At this difficult time in our economy, students need new ways to fund and afford the rising cost of education. As college graduates, these students will have many more opportunities and a better chance to become productive citizens of our community. In the past 12 years, “Grapes for Grades” has raised more than $300,000 for the Foundation and this year’s event raised approximately $30,000. ennifer Lopez, Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian started a craze for an enhanced buttock as flat or less protruding rear ends everywhere are being surgically enhanced into more shapely curves and feminine fullness. More women everywhere are considering, or getting buttock enhancements – lifted, sculpted, or augmented. Tighter fitting clothing, such as low-cut sweats, workout pants and leotards, are seen in public more often and a more shapely feminine figure has become aesthetically more desirable. The popularity of the butt lift is not just a U.S. fashion fad. Many women desire to enhance their buttock and thigh region to create a beautiful buttock shape and the very attractive sweep of the lower back, hips and waist. The buttock augmentation (a.k.a. Brazilian Butt Lift) is enjoying a surge in popularity, because women are unhappy with their buttocks, viewing them as too flat, too wide, or sagging. They were either born like this, or lost the form and shape of their buttocks after losing or gaining weight. Pregnancy, or just aging alone, can also affect the size, projection, and profile of the buttocks. Inability to achieve perky buttocks and sexy curves through exercise and muscle toning has frustrated health-conscious women. There are a variety of cosmetic surgery procedures available for those who desire youthful, fuller, and perky buttocks, with a more sensual body profile. These techniques vary depending on what is actually missing and what is the overall body frame and form. For example, there are many who are either genetically or by weight gain have developed “fat and wide” buttocks. Liposculpture can shape their buttocks and the surrounding tissues to make the buttocks rounder and more proportional to the rest of the figure. On the other hand, there are those who have “flat and wide” buttocks. In addition to utilizing liposculpture to shape their waist, hips and buttocks, fat injection or grafting is used to augment the buttocks and to provide fullness and projection. Because it also helps to lift loose buttock tissue, this procedure is also referred to as a Brazilian Buttock Lift. Contrary to the above, there are some with sagging buttocks who are not a candidate for Brazilian Buttock Augmentation. These are people whose buttocks sag as a result of massive weight loss, such as after a gastric bypass surgery. These individuals would benefit from a body lift procedure which removes excess skin and helps to lift their thighs and buttocks. During your consultation, Dr. Messa will review your treatment options for buttock contouring, augmentation and enlargement. He will discuss if you are a good candidate, surgical options and techniques, potential risks and complications of surgery, pre and post-operative instructions, as well as what to expect after surgery. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care. reast implants were first introduced in the 1960’s. Since that time, implants, and the surgical procedures to insert them, have evolved in many ways. However, the original goal is still the same; achieving a natural look. Size Matters The most common question is “What would be a good size?” My first response is to remind the patient that implants are not breasts. A simple formula is that the greater the patient’s own breast tissue, and the smaller the prosthesis, the more natural the result. Size is, by far, the most important variable in achieving a natural result. If there is any doubt just take a walk along South Beach. In my opinion, there is nothing worse than an attractive woman with disproportionately large breast implants. Breast size is also influenced by cultural factors. I’ve had the privilege of lecturing in many countries. When I survey plastic surgeons I find that average implant size increases from Asia to Europe to Latin America to the U.S. I tell my colleagues that here we suffer from what I call the “Pamela Anderson Syndrome”. Interestingly, surgeons everywhere, even in remote places such as Vietnam, seem to be familiar with the Baywatch star. Each surgeon develops his or her own technique for choosing the right breast implant size. I like to ask patients what their goals are. Do they want to be understated, proportionate, or XL? It’s not an exact formula but I perform many augmentations and this method has A natural looking breast augmentation includes worked well for me over the years. proper size, implant style Shapes and Styles and cleavage. Photo courtesy Perez Plastic Surgery Breast implants come in various shapes and styles. These choices will also impact the aesthetic result of surgery. The first choice is between saline and silicone prostheses. Gel implants feel and look more natural and are lighter than the equivalent saline sizes. Both saline and silicone implants come with either a smooth or textured cover and in round or teardrop shapes. However, patients should feel all the implant types at the time of consultation and then decide for themselves. Surgical Technique: It’s All About the Cleavage! There are several surgical incisions and approaches to breast augmentation surgery. The technique often will vary based upon the surgeon’s preference and experience. One very important variable however, is the position of the implant pocket. All too often implants are placed too far apart and fail to close the cleavage gap. However, women certainly understand, it’s all about the cleavage! Even though every woman presents with a different preoperative cleavage gap, the surgeon should focus on helping the patient achieve her personal best. With few exceptions, the gap should be narrower in almost all cases. We’ve revised cases where the gap was so wide that when the patient laid down the implants would roll into the armpits. One patient even affectionately referred to herself as the “table top chest”. In my opinion, proper cleavage is second to size in achieving a natural result. So what goes into a “natural” breast implant result? The answer is all of the above; size, shape, style, technique and cleavage. They should all be discussed thoroughly at the time of consultation. Dr. Perez is a member of the NOVO National Council of Leaders in Breast Aesthetics. He has served as a consultant for both Mentor (J&J) and Inamed (Allergan), leading breast implant manufacturers. He has lectured internationally on the subject of breast surgery and has been selected among the Castle Connolly (U.S. News & World Report) America’s Top Doctors.
