The Other November Day to Give Thanks
M
ost Americans gather with family and friends on the fourth Thursday of November to give thanks and enjoy a wonderful meal. This great tradition dates back to pilgrims and Native Americans eating wild turkey in New England, or so the story goes. There is another day in November, however, when we should all give thanks as well. On November 11th we celebrate Veterans Day. It is the day when we recognize the men and women who have risked life and limb to protect us, and our way of life. On Veteran’s Day, I think of true American Heroes, like Pembroke Pines native Patrick Xavier, Jr., a Marine who gallantly gave his life for his country. I also think of the countless Lance Corporals and Specialists, Sailors and Airmen, who we rarely read about. These faceless heroes silently labor away, frequently at risk, yet are seldom recognized. They don’t ask for much. Each one of them felt a calling to volunteer; some because they wanted to prove something to themselves; others, because of a deep desire to “give back” to their country. Perhaps we should go out of our way on November 11th to do something nice for them. So, if you see a service member on that special day, buy him a drink, pick up the tab for her lunch, or simply say “thank you” or “Oorah!” It doesn’t sound like much, but it might be all that they need. Happy Thanksgiving, and to all those veterans out there, Thanks! Sincerely, Terry Jaillet President & Publisher

Hollywood’s Historical Buildings Are Honored With Plaque Dedication By Beverly Perkins
T
he Hollywood Historical Society and the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) created a program to show Hollywood’s future generations about its unique past. Together they compiled a great list of historic landmarks and honored them with a plaque dedication last month. The ceremony took place in Hollywood’s Historic District where the walking tour took place last year for Hollywood’s 90th Anniversary celebration. The self-guided tour is similar to the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project (DHMP) mural tour. Residents and visitors alike will be able to pick up informational brochures around town at shops and tourist agencies, so they can see the landmark properties at their leisure. The plaques will also provide all the historical facts about what the specific structure was in the past. This is only Phase One of the project as there are plans for Phase Two downtown, and another on Hollywood Beach. Hollywood’s significant history dates back to the early 1920s when it was also referred to as Hollywood By-the-Sea. It was the sole vision and creation of Joseph W. Young Jr. This visionary was already a land developer in Long Beach, California, Arizona, and Indianapolis. After WWI, Young envisioned creating a beautiful city on the shore filled with parks, schools and broad boulevards. So he traveled east to Florida, and purchased the empty parcel of partially farmed land in Broward County. In just five years, he turned it into a new city with a variety of shops, a theater and

a bank. In addition, he reserved the three circles on Hollywood Boulevard as the future locations for a park, City Hall and a grand hotel. Phase One of the project will acknowledge eight properties. The first plaque was dedicated to the structure at 1934 Hollywood Blvd which was once the Hollywood Publishing Company & Hollywood News building. Other historic landmarks to be dedicated are as follows: ▸▸ 1946 Harrison Street - the Harrison Building ▸▸ 2000 Hollywood Blvd. - the Hollywood Land & Water Company ▸▸ 1926 Hollywood Blvd. - the Morse Arcade ▸▸ 1928 Hollywood Blvd. - Joe’s Tropical Cafe ▸▸ 1930-32 Hollywood Blvd. - the Wellons & McGowan ▸▸ 1936-38 Hollywood Blvd. - the Central Arcade ▸▸ 2010 Hollywood Blvd. - is still operating as Melina’s, Hollywood’s oldest family business. “It was definitely a collaborative effort between the Hollywood Historical Society and the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency”, says Hollywood Historical Society President, Karen Alberston. “We brought the idea to them and they flew with it!” For more information, please visit HollywoodHistoricalSociety.org.

Local Artist Creates Pop-Up Mobile Art Gallery SECTION HEAD Community News
By Beverly Perkins
H
ollywood resident artist, Alissa Alfonso, is a creator and curator by nature. Her passion is to juxtapose upcycled elements, combine colors and textures and mix fantasy with reality to create unexpected, yet delightful artistic experiences. She is an expert at re-purposing materials to create unique pieces of art. This demonstration brings attention to how everyone can make a positive impact on the environment while making aesthetic artwork. Years of experience as a working artist led her to create her latest venture, SQUATTER. This 1973 Shasta Compact trailer, has been creatively transformed into a fully mobile art gallery. It serves as a platform for anonymous artists to showcase their work. Alfonso’s goal is to help fellow artists avoid certain roadblocks that traditionally occur when they bring art into communities. SQUATTER alleviates the issue by having popup appearances at existing community exhibits as well as exclusive SQUATTER events. “I think it is not only important to create interesting art that excites your audience, but to help the art community while doing so,” says Alfonso. SQUATTER’s next pop-up exhibit, Eastside Artisan & Flea, is November 5th at The Hollywood Beach Golf Resort. Visitors will enjoy a local vintage setting with live music, food and drinks, while SQUATTER presents an outdoor curated market featuring contemporary artists /designer craftspeople as well as vintage collectors influenced by the spirit and beauty of South Florida. SQUATTER is looking for vendors working in all media, especially those not seen before, to showcase their best and brightest handmade designs. Mediums may be wood, leather, metal, textiles, and even plants. Alfonso is offering a scholarship vendor space for a qualifying artist. She is also giving proceeds to Compassionate Pug Rescue, “Hug a Pug”. In addition to her enthusias-
tic approach to art, she has a desire to help animals by fostering for the rescue center. Alfonso’s creative efforts and love for animals have also benefitted non-profit organizations such as the Humane Society of Broward County. Hollywood’s Blazing Paddles are Hot! By Beverly Perkins
S
outh Florida’s oldest and most prestigious dragon boat team, Blazing Paddles, returned from the 2016 Atlanta Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival where they finished strong in the 21st annual competition. Hollywood’s Blazing Paddles team of thirty-three “pirates” won medals at the former Olympic venue, Lake Lanier, in Georgia. More than seventy teams from around the world competed in the notorious event. Blazing Paddles was victorious in the women’s division winning two silver medals and a bronze in the 2,000 meter mixed division race. Although Blazing Paddles started sixteen years ago, the ancient Chinese sport

is more than 2,000 years old, and remains as one of the fastest growing team sports today. Thousands participate in more than sixty countries. However, it’s most popular in North America, Western Europe, China and East Asia. The Hollywood team, almost since its inception, has won at least one championship each year. They also recently participated in the Synergy Series Dragon Boat Racing Festival at TY Park. This event promoted a full, strong, and active lifestyle for breast cancer survivors which has become a growing international trend in the dragon boat movement. Many teams came out to participate from Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. The championship team always welcomes newbies and veterans. The Coed group accepts members of all ages. Currently, the adventurous bunch consists of students, professionals and entrepreneurs with ages ranging from 20s to 70s. “I’m very proud of what Blazing Paddles has been able to accomplish in the

last 16 years,” said Captain and Founder, Will Murphy. “We accept people at all levels of fitness and ability, almost all with no paddling experience, and yet have found a way to be competitive. In fact, in 2009 we won the IDBF Community Division World Championship and in 2010 some of our members helped to set a world record for dragon boating that they still hold. Or, as we sometimes put it Blazing Paddles, turning office clerks, students, retirees, soccer moms, into deadly paddling pirates since 2002.” The two hour practice sessions are at Holland Park in Hollywood at Johnson Street on the Intracoastal at 6:45pm on Monday and Wednesday evenings and at 8:45am Saturday mornings. Times are subject to change due to weather, races or other factors, so it’s recommended to call or text (954)232-7434 ahead of time. Blazing Paddles is active in the community and participates in outreach by giving time and talent to a variety of organizations. Live your best life now. Let us help you combat depression, anxiety and feeling miserable about most anything In his clinical practice, Dr. Donde helps guide individual and couples toward living more rationally using REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy). As the stoic philosopher Epictetus said: “People are disturbed not by things, but by the views they take of them.” We largely create our own feelings through the beliefs and views we take of events that occur in our lives. For example, consider how differently people around us may respond to a tragic event despite observing similar physical stimuli. In the days and weeks following the event,
individuals will respond differently because of their beliefs and interpretations of the event. REBT serves to help clients learn to challenge irrational belief systems by identifying and disputing the faulty beliefs that cause and maintain our disturbances. To this end, REBT is as much a philosophical endeavor as it is a psychological intervention. Dr. Donde is honored to assist clients on the journey to living a more rational existence by taking control of their feelings through REBT.

Ralph’s International Market Brings Shoppers a Taste of Home feature story
By Beverly Perkins
M
any South Florida residents are surprised when they stumble upon this little hidden gem tucked away off I-95 between Stirling Road and Sheridan Street. One patron exclaimed, “I can’t believe this place has been around since 1982 and we never knew about it!”
Ralph’s International Market is not a traditional supermarket franchise. A matter of fact, it’s far from it. The market is the creation of its owner, Pat Lucci. The retired 2-star Admiral from Buffalo, New York purchased Fort Lauderdale Wholesale Grocers in 1979 and entered into the food service and institutional distribution markets after having a successful career in the donut business up north. He then named it Niagara Distributors Inc. and created the cash and carry store thereafter. Lucci wanted to represent a majority of the major U.S. manufacturers as well as a number of foreign manufacturers. This diverse mix makes up the uniqueness of shopping at Ralph’s. Anyone craving a taste of home can most likely find what they are looking for at this international market. Pat Lucci, Founder and Chairman of the Board of Ralph’s International Market, took the time to answer some frequently asked questions about his “super” market.
We heard there is a unique history about how the actual store came about. Tell us
about it. Well, when we were just a distribution center many local farmers used to sell produce on the street corner. One day they were told they could no longer sell their goods on the public property, so I invited them to sell on my property. It soon became a place for local farmers to sell produce straight out of their pickup trucks and later from a produce stand. Today it is a large building with thousands of square feet, and a destination for local consumers to purchase those food products from home, wherever, their home may be.
What would you say Ralph’s International Market specializes in? We have the larg-
est variety of imported food products from all over the world. From bakery items to wines and
everything in between, one can expect to find the most unique and hard to find items.
you name it, we can smoke it in our facility. We can have anything ready for a special occasion.

What are some other specialty items that you sell? Besides the hometown
goodies from Buffalo, New York, we have a top notch selection of cheeses, smoked meats, salmon caviar, olive oils, Hungarian salami and Turkish coffee, just to name a few.
Where are your wines from? Our wines are
mainly all imported from Europe. We offer a large quality selection with great prices. Our Romanian, Bulgarian and Hungarian wine assortment is one of the largest and most popular in the area.

Miami Dolphins Scored Big with Their Annual Backpack Event
SECTION NEWS SCHOOL HEAD
By Beverly Perkins
T
he anticipated 2016-2017 school year and football season kicked off. However, not all Broward and Miami-Dade students have had the privilege of being prepared with all the proper “training gear”. The Miami Dolphins tackled this problematic issue over 27 years ago and continue the tradition by hosting their annual “Back to School Backpack Event” at Dave & Buster’s in Hollywood. Dolphins players, cheerleaders, and mascot T.D. distributed backpacks to preselected students, ages 6-18 years old, from Title 1 schools in Broward and MiamiDade County schools who were chosen by their principals. In addition to backpacks filled with school supplies, the students received team logo t-shirts and had the opportunity to hang out and play games with Miami Dolphins players. Miami Dolphins players included punter Matt Darr and his wife, Lauren, long snapper John Denney, tight end MarQueis Gray and his wife, Alison, defensive end Dion Jordan, wide receiver Kenny Stills and defensive tackle Julius Warmsley. These athletes and their families spent this valuable time off the field interacting with the young fans at the annual event. One hundred students, fifty from each county, representing Stirling Elementary (Hollywood), Glades Middle School (Pembroke Pines), Phillis Wheatley Elementary
(L-R) John Denney, Lousaka Polite, Ali, MarQueis Gray, Matt Darr, Jess, Julius Warmsely, Dion Jordan and Kenny Stills
(Miami) and Gertrude K. Edelman/Sabal Palm Elementary School (North Miami Beach) were able to socialize and engage with Miami’s athletic idols. The children were able to enjoy a feast of their favorites for dinner, a DJ and arcade games with the Dolphins players. At the end of the event, they were given backpacks filled with plenty of gear for their “game days”: colored pencils, pens, notebooks, binders, paper, folders, index cards, pencils, glue sticks, rulers, highlighters and a pencil pouch. “Our players, cheerleaders and staff had a great time interacting with students in the community and always look forward to this annual event,” said Miami Dolphins Senior Vice President of Communications & Community Affairs Jason Jenkins. “One of our main pillars is education and we hope that these much-needed supplies will push these kids to a successful school year.” “The fact that the organization would take time out during football season to spend time with our students and give us the opportunity to engage in activity is incredible,” stated Phillis Wheatley Elementary Principal Cathy Williams. “To go away with supplies and a book bag with an emblem of the Dolphins so they can remember forever is just an experience for them.”

The Votes Are In! McArthur Teacher Elected “Commander in Teach” By Beverly Perkins
P
arents and students across the nation recently participated in an election presented by Walmart. Participants did not vote for the next President of the United States, a popular household product, or a grocery item. Walmart asked its customers across the country to nominate their favorite teachers. The process was the same as any election, the twenty teachers who received the most votes were honored as Walmart’s Elected Commander in Teach(ers), and each winner received a $490 store gift card. It’s been noted that teachers, on the average, spend $490 of their own money to purchase school supplies for their classrooms. After receiving hundreds of submissions for the Walmart Commander in Teach(ers) program, the winners were announced. Educators from all over the country made their schools proud as did Margarita Sweeting who represented Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) and McArthur High School. Walmart’s corporate website has all the winners’ photos and quotes listed beneath them with some of the descriptive entries about why their
18
teacher deserves to be recognized. This is what it says about the McArthur High School Journalism teacher: “Ms. Sweeting is such a phenomenal teacher. She makes it her mission to not only instill valuable educational lessons in her students, but valuable life lessons as well. You can always count on her to be understanding, charismatic, and just plain sweet.” Sweeting knew she won since it was announced publically on Walmart’s website. However, she did not know

she would be surprised in her classroom by her students, Walmart Store Manager, Alan Centazzo and the school principal, Todd J. LaPace when she was presented with her store gift card.
“To be one of twenty teachers recognized nationally by Walmart is a prestigious honor and an impressive accomplishment,” says McArthur High School Principal Todd J. LaPace. “I think I speak for the entire McArthur High School community when I say how extremely proud we are of her ‘Commander in Teach’ award.” LaPace further went on to say, “Congratulations Ms. Sweeting. This award signifies all the hard work you have put into impacting students in a positive way on a regular basis.” Sweeting has been an educator for sixteen years with half of her teaching career at McArthur High School where she is the Journalism teacher and lead for the school newspaper and yearbook. Teaching is her passion, but if she couldn’t be a teacher she would most definitely be a reporter. “I was very humbled to be among such a group of professionals, and even more humble that it was the students who nominated me,” says Sweeting. “The money will go towards technology for my classroom, such as cameras and/or tablets.”

RECIPE
Some people are intimidated by the thought of cooking Thanksgiving dinner. The idea of serving relatives and friends dry turkey can be stressful. Have no fear, though, cooking a Thanksgiving turkey is actually quite easy. We have been using this recipe at home for years with great success. Enjoy!
Ingredients: 1 large whole turkey (fresh or defrosted) ½ cup unsalted melted butter or olive oil Kosher Salt Fresh ground pepper One celery stalk (cut into thirds) One onion, chopped into 1-2 inch pieces Two apples, chopped into 1-2 inch pieces Herbs (sage, rosemary and/or thyme) Instructions: Preheat oven to 325° F. Remove neck and giblets from turkey, then wash thoroughly, inside and out. Pat dry with paper towels. Place the turkey, breast side up, on a cooking rack, in a shallow roasting pan. Coat the exterior of the turkey with the olive oil or butter, then season with kosher salt and pepper. Loosely stuff the turkey with the celery, onion, apples and herbs. Place prepared turkey in center of oven. After 2 ½ hours, loosely cover the turkey with aluminum foil, to prevent the skin from burning. Continue to cook until the breast of the turkey reaches an internal temperature of 180° F. Remove from oven, and let stand for 10 to 15 minutes before carving. If things don’t go as planned, you can always call the Butterball turkey experts for advice at 1-800-BUTTERBALL (288-8372).

Old McArthur Has a Farm – A $1,500 Farm Outreach Grant By Beverly Perkins
A
t the conclusion of the 2015-2016 school year, it was announced that 10 schools in the country were to receive a $1,500 My American Farm Outreach Grant. Of these 10 schools, Hollywood’s McArthur Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter was one of the select few chosen. The winning schools had to be located in an urban area and capable of reaching at least 400 elementary students. Those selected will promote and support the organization’s efforts to provide a better understanding of contemporary agriculture amongst the young students through outreach events. These events must incorporate an interactive game, one lesson plan and one video from a set of available materials found at My American Farm. This educational resource is a special project of the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture. The project teaches agricultural literacy to consumers and the public through online educational games. Players learn where food comes from, and the process of how food gets from the fields to the dinner plates. High school students are also encouraged to bring along a community/farm representative to share how agriculture affects everyday life. Upon completion of the outreach programs, the school will receive another $1,500 to further their agricultural literacy efforts of building agricultural awareness and understanding through education. Agricultural education provides leadership opportunities, personal growth and career success. Those that

participate will be prepared for making informed choices in global agriculture, food, fiber and natural resources systems. Instruction is delivered through three major components: ▸▸ C lassroom/Laboratory instruction (contextual learning) ▸▸ Supervised Agricultural Experience programs (work-based learning) ▸▸ Student leadership organizations (National FFA Organization, National Young Farmer Educational Association and National Post-secondary Agricultural Student Organization) Future Farmers of America (FFA) is an intra-curricular student organization available for those interested in agriculture and leadership. The group isn’t just for those that want to be production farmers. It is open to everyone who has career aspirations. There are a growing number of opportunities in the industry of agriculture. Not only is the organization dedicated to creating Future Farmers, but Future Biologists, Future Chemists, Future Veterinarians, Future Engineers and Future Entrepreneurs of America too. “We plant ideas that grow,” says Vincent Newman, McArthur High School Horticulture Teacher. conservation. The example he gave to point out the impact social media has on the youth of today is that “If a Lebron James sent out a tweet about using less energy or using a recycled water container, it would go viral.” Gancitano plans on having the Driftwood Green Team start “greening” all the school’s sporting events. Soccer, basketball, volleyball and flag football games will have Green Team representatives recycling all the bottles and cans at each of the events. In addition to this small, but impactful task, the Green Team hopes to be a positive role model for students and parents on the field by being an example of how everyone can make simple environmental changes. Furthermore, Driftwood Middle School is seeking out local elementary student athletes to become ambassadors for the environment and sports. Those will be invited to the school to create a public service announcement (PSA) about recycling, energy conservation and water conservation. Driftwood Middle School won several awards for its sustainability efforts, including a 2012-2013 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School award and 2012-2013 Florida Green School Award for Middle Schools.

ate summer, just before the start of the 2016-2017 school year, Driftwood Middle School Physical Education Teacher and Magnet Ambassador, Linda Gancitano was invited to attend a White House Roundtable on Climate and Sports. It’s no surprise that this individual received an invitation to attend the national event. She’s no stranger in Washington D.C. Last year, this inspirational teacher was honored at The White House as one of eight “Champions of Change for Climate Education and Literacy”. The purpose of the event was to bring together athletes, sustainability leaders in the athletic community, stakeholders working on climate and sports, as well as senior administration officials who are committed to climate action. Some of the organizations present were the NBA, NHL, NFL, North Face, and many universities from across the country. The Roundtable discussion focused on opportunities to engage the athletic community in building sustainability, enhancing climate resilience, and educating and raising public awareness of the impacts of climate change on sports. This effort aligns with a recent call-to-action issued by the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy on climate and sports. Dr. Hershkowitz, from the Green Sports Alliance (GSA), said that 18% of people will change behaviors because of science and 80% of people will change because of an athlete, or because a sport is raising awareness. He further went on to state that the world needs environmental athletes to speak up about recycling and energy and water

Driftwood Elementary Students Choose Peace By Beverly Perkins
A
couple months ago, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), United Way and the Children’s Services Council led an initiative titled Choose Peace / Stop Violence. The initiative coincided with the International Day of Peace. Each year the International Day of Peace is observed on September 21st. The event, observed around the world, was established in 1981 by a unanimous United Nations resolution. The General Assembly declared that day to be devoted to “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples”. The overall goal of Choose Peace / Stop Violence was to build community-wide efforts to educate, engage, inspire, and empower youth to take action and bring about positive change for the purpose of preventing youth crime and violence, and creating safe, healthy and thriving environments for children and families. The program is a collaborative effort to advocate for county-wide violence prevention in Broward County. The vision is for youth and families to thrive in safe and healthy neighborhoods which have opportunities for personal, spiritual, educational and economic growth. Driftwood Elementary students participated not just for the day, but in a week-long celebration. The curriculum included lessons on peace, art and writing activities, as well as teaching an anti-bullying campaign. From posters to peace wish tree messages and brochures, the students from head start to fifth grade were all engaged in the national celebration.
One of the days, all students, staff and teachers were instructed to wear blue to raise awareness of bullying among middle school girls. Another day, on the twentyfirst, all wore white to symbolize peace and harmony. The most popular activity of the week was Chalk4Peace. The students with special needs especially loved this project since they were able to demonstrate their expression for peace by creating sidewalk chalk drawings alongside the mainstream fifth grade students. Chalk4Peace allowed students to write messages of inspiration and draw visions of peace in a fun and creative way. “As a special education teacher, I believe that all students can learn despite their disabilities and we all share the same vision here at Driftwood Elementary School,” said Reshma Mulchan, ESE Teacher. Driftwood Principal Mrs. Marina S. Rashid and Assistant Principal Mrs. Lourdes Cruz supported their staff and students in celebrating Choose Peace / Stop Violence week. For more information on how to get involved in Choose Peace / Stop Violence, please visit www.choosepeacestopviolence.org.

t’s that time of year to reflect, give thanks and give back. South Broward High School is doing just this, but they need the community’s help. They are participating in the Harvest Drive once again to help ensure that families in need can enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday. Students, teachers and community members are coming together to collect items and Photos: Harvest Drive Florida. funds so they can provide over 150 families with a two week supply of non-perishable groceries, personal necessities and a Thanksgiving meal. The Harvest Drive, a non-profit (501c3) organization, is a county wide service program that has been teaching children to help other children. Every year participating schools, public and private, along with religious and other local organizations combine efforts to provide over 2,000 families of students in their community what they need to have a happy holiday. In addition to collected staples, each family also receives a $50 Publix gift card so they can purchase a turkey to complete their meal. The purpose of the Harvest Drive is to teach children at an early age that they can make a difference in other’s lives. Another unique quality of the program is that it also teaches leadership ability. While students are learning philanthropy, they are also in charge of the entire collection. They work with businesses and the community during the donation/collection process and create ways to obtain the most charitable donations. For 24 years now, the Harvest Drive remains a 100% volunteer charity. It’s staffed by students, school administrators, community sponsors and “worker bees”. It’s encouraged that adults and children work together to give those less fortunate the help they need in Broward County.

Hollywood’s Susan Berry is Always in Bloom inspiring SECTION individual HEAD
By Beverly Perkins
F
ounder and President of the Hollywood Garden Club, Susan Berry, has a long history in the city of Hollywood. She’s from a family of what some would call “Hollywood’s Dinosaurs”. Her father M.E. Berry surveyed most of Hollywood to U.S. 27 with Hollywood’s founder, Joseph Young in 1926. Her aunt was a prominent member of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and her Uncle Harry Berry is still known for his American flags which still stand throughout the community today. Harry Berry Park on Hollywood Beach is named after him. The undeveloped land filled with pine trees, palmetto plants, mangrove swamps and tangled undergrowth along with scattered tomato farms and low lying marsh-
land was a playground for Susan Berry to learn from. Berry’s mother, Jeanne took her to Everglades National Park where she further learned to love nature and the outdoors. However, Hollywood wasn’t where Berry started her gardening career. The family had a second home in Tennessee, and this was where her love for the hobby took off. She joined the Mountain City Garden Club and learned hands-on how to plant fruits, vegetables and tobacco. She and her family also grew strawberries and discovered how to make a delicious jam. She took her abundance of knowledge and brought it back home to Hollywood where she is still fondly known as “The Jelly Lady”.
Gardening for over 50 years in Hollywood has taught Berry many lessons through trial and error. She shares her appreciation, passion and experience with others in many capacities. Through the years, Berry has been an integral part of many organizations in Hollywood: President of The Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, Women’s Division; Representative of the American Business Women’s Association; and Founder and President of the Hollywood Garden Club. In addition to these positions, she is a Master Gardener, Advanced Master Naturalist, Certified Garden Consultant, Landscape Designer and Florida Master Naturalist Program Land Steward. “Everyone is welcome to attend Hollywood Garden Club meetings and engage with other gardeners who come together to share experienced knowledge of horticulture,” says Berry. “Members will

hen discussing cosmetic enhancements of the face and body, patients often focus on the procedures and products available and ignore the significance of nutrition. At the cellular level, the aging process is characterized by mitochondrial damage, inflammation, and glycation. Plastic surgery addresses the external signs of aging. Proper nutrition, including diet and supplements, can not only slow the aging process, but, also ensure that the patient heals properly after surgery. Adequate Vitamin C is necessary for collagen production, which strengthens a wound and fights free radical damage. Other less often mentioned antioxidants, which are more potent, are resveratrol (found in red wine) and pycnogenol (pine bark extract). Both have demonstrated clinical efficacy in reducing inflammation in the body and reversing the signs of aging. Patients often prefer nonfat supplements, which at times are actually higher in sugar and more damaging to the body. Too much sugar in your diet leads to increased levels of insulin and can progress to fat infiltration in the liver. Unsaturated fatty acids, such as Omega-3 and Omega-6, are essential fatty acids that are good for the body. They are often found in plant foods, such as vegetable oils; nuts (almonds, walnuts); seeds (flax); and fish, such as salmon. It is the saturated fats and trans fats that should be avoided as much as possible. These are found in butter, red meat, and high fat dairy products. Recently, scientists have presented conflicting evidence as to the benefits of Omega-7 fatty acids. Palmitoleic acid is not an essential fatty acid, meaning our bodies can manufacture it from other nutrients and we don’t need to get it from food. Experimental studies have shown it to be beneficial in reducing heart disease and triglyceride levels. More controlled clinical trials are necessary to determine the health benefits of this omega. As we age, our metabolism changes and hormone levels decrease. The effects of years of cellular damage from poor dietary habits and lack of proper nutrition become more evident. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has been shown in studies to reduce fat and preserve muscle tissue. CLA helps you lose weight faster by reducing fat storage introduced by your daily diet and accelerating fat metabolism within the existing adipose (fat) tissue. Similarly, L-carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid, which plays a vital role in the metabolism of fat. It functions as a transporter of fatty acids into the mitochondria, the metabolic furnace of the cell. Carnitine boosts energy by stimulating the body’s burning of triglycerides as fuel. L-carnitine allows the body to burn more fat. No pill or supplement is a substitute for a balanced, healthy diet, including some degree of calorie restriction, low-glycemic foods, coupled with both cardiovascular and weight-bearing exercise. Patients should know that not all supplements affect each individual in the same manner. If you are uncertain whether you should be taking a specific supplement because of health conditions or medications you are taking, consult with your physician first. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. ollywood Girl Scout Nicolette Melendez did something unique to earn her Girl Scout Silver Award. The coveted award is highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. It gives girls the chance to make a community a better place. Girls who want to achieve the prestigious award must complete a Cadette “Journey” prior to being able to start a Silver Award project. Girls must first identify an issue they care about, and then decide if they want to do it solo or with a team before submitting a proposal to their local Council for approval. The service project must be educational, as well as sustainable after the project is completed. At the end they must reflect, share and celebrate it. A minimum of 50 hours is required to earn the award. A disagreement with a teacher regarding flag retirement last year is what gave this Girl Scout the burning desire to create her service project. Serving in Color Guards many times with her troop gave her the necessary knowledge to educate the public on flag handling requirements. In her proposal to the Council, Nicolette wrote, “I want to show the community girls

can do anything the boys can do.” The ambitious 14-year-old scout from Troop 10710 decided to create and implement her own project (with a little bit of help from her dad). She designed and built an American Flag Retirement Drop Box. The box is a safe place where flags can be deposited for a proper and respectful retirement. The finished project was installed at Hollywood City Hall in September, where it sits on the second floor lobby. Nicolette built the box with the assistance of her father, Kevin Melendez. The box is made of birch wood and the interior is lined with red velvet. The gold plate on top of the box informs the public of general guidelines from the U.S. Flag Code for handling American flags: ▸▸ The flag should be flown in fair weather, unless the flag is designed for inclement weather use. ▸▸ When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms. ▸▸ To store the flag, it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously. ▸▸ The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary. ▸▸ “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” As part of her Silver Award project, Nicolette is educating her peers and adults on how to retire American flags. She also produced an instructional video on how to properly cut and retire an American flag which can be viewed on YouTube. Hollywood residents are urged to bring their tattered, faded or torn American flags to Hollywood City Hall, located at 2600 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood, FL 33020, to ensure a proper and respectful retirement of the Colors. Nicolette’s video can be seen on YouTube at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=sKT4SXuvOxc (Flag Retirement DIY). Deb Gronvold, Hollywood Jaycees Executive Director, has agreed to coordinate the pick-up and retirement of the flags deposited in the drop box.

However, he hates long walks and rather ride in his Radio Flyer wagon. His favorite things are food and visits to see his vet, Dr. Bob. He loves going to Friday night South Broward Bulldog football games, where he seems to be an honorary mascot off the field. He was last seen attending the South Broward Bulldog Band’s car wash fundraiser.
