renewal and progress all around the world. For our neighbors to the north, it means the end (hopefully) of another brutal winter packed with powerful blizzards that blanketed much of the midwest and northeast. Even as I am writing this editorial, the Boston area is still digging out from another snow-loaded blizzard, and not the kind you get at Dairy Queen. Here in South Florida, we’re fortunate to live the perpetual “Spring Break.” People from all over the country, and world, flock to Florida to take refuge from the cold and enjoy our mild temperatures, calming sea breezes and white sandy beaches. But, you don’t need to be a snowbird or tourist to enjoy all that Florida has to offer. With Spring Break later this month, why not spend some time enjoying the many splendors of the Sunshine State? Where else can you see endangered manatees, pre-historic alligators and pretty pink flamingos all in the same day? Where else can you relax and sunbathe during the day and then dance the night away on South Beach? Where else can you go flats fishing on a secluded sand bar and then pull up for a delicious bite to eat at one of the many restaurants along the Intracoastal Waterway? Only here in South Florida. Advanced Treatment for Cancer-causing Polyps Without Surgery Removing polyps from the colon is standard practice to reduce the chance of colorectal cancer. But for polyps that are large or hard to reach, their removal during a colonoscopy is a challenge.

Though many patients have traditional surgery for these complex polyps, Cleveland Clinic Florida gastroenterologists are using new

tools and techniques that require no stitches or long recovery times. It’s a procedure called endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). An endoscope is a thin flexible tube with a tiny camera, to which small surgery tools are attached. Mucosal refers to the tissue of the colon and resection means surgical removal. “Many patients and physicians may not be familiar with EMR or do not have access to it locally, so these polyps are often removed using traditional surgery,” says Cleveland Clinic gastroenterologist Tolga Erim, DO who specializes in advanced endoscopy

techniques. “But EMR gives patients another choice. With experienced specialists performing it, there is less risk of bleeding, and a much shorter recovery time compared to surgery.” During the procedure, Cleveland Clinic Florida physicians employ several standardized procedures to reach and remove the polyps. “For example, by injecting saline into the tissue, they can raise the polyp in order to resect it completely. In addition, newer snares, or metal loops, and tools to cauterize (seal) blood vessels make removal very efficient,” Dr. Erim says. According to reports from the National Institutes of Health, patients with large or complex polyps should be referred for EMR to a specialty facility such as Cleveland Clinic Florida, so they can avoid unnecessary surgery. “We’ve treated patients from as far away as South America,” Dr. Erim says. “Because of our expertise and experience with EMR, this is the appropriate place to come for hard-totreat polyps. We’ve become a referral center for it.” Once the procedure is over, the patient should avoid strenuous activity for a few days although you can continue on with regular day to day activities the next day. The patient’s diet will need to be altered so that they eat soft foods and drink fluids for the days following the procedure. After about six to twelve months, a follow-up appointment is needed to make sure the entire lesion was removed. After a followup procedure with the specialist who performed the EMR, patients can return to their regular physician.

Ongoing Youth Leadership Broward – Leadership Broward Foundation is now accepting applications from all Broward County high school sophomores for Youth Leadership Broward (YLB) Class XXIX. Thousands celebrate MLK Day in Miramar BY JILL SHARPE

enjoyed the city’s annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration on January 19th. The celebration kicked off with a parade beginning at Forzano Park. The parade, which included marching bands, dance groups, community based organizations, churches and businesses, proceeded north and then east around Sherman circle culminating with a huge celebration at Lakeshore Park. The event, hosted by Rodney Baltimore of HOT 05, was a fun-filled day of food, music, dancing and entertainment including musical group The Old Skool Gang and Author/Speaker Mirthell Bayliss Bazemore. Children enjoyed the Kids Zone which was filled with inflatable’s for all ages. There was also food trucks, food vendors, novelty vendors and art exhibits for the crowd to enjoy. Residents relaxed on blankets and lawn chairs thoroughly enjoying a day of great music, entertainment and inspiration. “As one of the most culturally diverse cities in Broward County, Miramar is honored to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” said Natasha Hampton, Chief of Marketing and Public Relations for the City. “We’re proud to offer our community an opportunity to come together and celebrate Dr. King’s amazing legacy.”

Joint Exhibits at the Miramar Library and Miramar Cultural Trust Celebrate Historic Work of Mother and Daughter Artists BY JILL SHARPE

will host an exhibition by photographer Lee Ann Birkenstock from March 14, 2015 through April 12, 2015. Sponsored by the Friends of the Miramar library, the exhibit represents a unique partnership between the Miramar Library and the Miramar Cultural Trust, a first time collaboration for both organizations. “We are excited by the partnership between the Miramar Library, Friends of the Miramar Library and the Miramar Cultural Trust and to be able to bring such quality exhibits to the community,” said Linda Winkler, Friends of the Miramar Library President. In the spirit of celebrating Women’s History Month, the joint effort showcases the extraordinary artwork and photography of Lee Ann Birkenstock and her mother, Joyce Birkenstock, considered today’s foremost painter of indigenous people. Together they have traveled the world capturing customs and faces of native people, some from cultures that are endangered and disappearing. Lee Ann Birkenstock developed an interest in photography when she began to accompany her mother on trips to some of the most ancient civilizations in the world. From images of ethnic groups dating back 4000 years, to magnificent costumes worn at temple festivals, from exotic tribal rituals to the gentle grace of paying homage to the Gods, Birkenstock’s work chronicles her personal glimpse into the myths and magic of our world’s greatest treasure, its people.

This past summer she studied with renowned photographer, Nevada Weir who specializes in photographing cultures inhabiting remote corners of the globe. “When Artistic Cultures opens at the Miramar Library, photographs from my most recent trip to India will hopefully reflect all that I had the opportunity to learn from someone who shares my passion”, said Birkenstock. Chris Marhenke, Manager of the Miramar Library, said he believes the exhibit will be of great interest to Miramar resident. “We believe the diverse cultures represented in the artists’ work will be appealing because Miramar residents of so many different cultures visit the library,” said Marhenke. Artistic Journeys, the counterpart exhibition by celebrated artist, and Lee Ann’s mother, Joyce Birkenstock, will open on March 12, 2015 and will run concurrently at the Ansin Family Gallery located in the Miramar Cultural Center one block from the Library. It will feature original works of art from the Birkenstock private collection, many of which are award winning museum pieces, as well as significant relics from some of our earliest ancestors. Both Artistic Cultures and Artistic Journeys have been recognized as official Broward 100 Events, a countywide celebration designed to raise awareness of the arts in order to reach, bond, and build our communities. Exhibit of Nelson Mandela’s Artwork Is Highlight of Black History Month Events in Miramar BY JILL SHARPE

History Month, Miramar brought that history to life with a series of events aimed at educating and enlightening the public. The highlight of the month was “Mandela’s Legacy”, an exhibit of sketches by the late Nelson Mandela shown at the Ansin Family Art Gallery at the Miramar Cultural Center (MCC). “Mandela’s Legacy” represented a coup for the city, as the gallery was the first place in the entire U.S. where the ten sketches made by Mandela while he was imprisoned in South Africa were available for public viewing. The exhibit was on display from February 2nd through February 27th, with a reception held on February 12th. “We are honored to host this exclusive exhibition highlighting the works of one of the world’s greatest leaders,” said Cultural Affairs Director Valerie Norman Gammon. “It is especially poignant that though Mr. Mandela is gone physically, we get a glimpse of his 27-year incarceration through these sketches.” The exhibit was curated by ArtServe, an arts advocacy group and community center in Fort Lauderdale. “I wanted to do something that’s different , that no one has seen before, and since it had been a year since Mandela’s passing, this exhibit seemed perfect,” said Jaye Abbate, ArtServe CEO. “I believe collaboration creates success and this wouldn’t have been possible without the MCC, the local artists here, and Mandela’s family. It was a series of luck and coincidences. The pieces shown here have meaning and depth. The art is simple, but powerful, and people can feel their power.” Three local artists, Donna Haynes, Yves Gabriel, and Francisco Sheuat, contributed their mixed media artwork to the exhibit and used Mandela’s drawings as their muse. “My message is that hateful words will keep growing if we let them and we keep repeating them,” Haynes said about her installation “Hate Breeds Hate”. “I wanted to present the problem, but also present a solution. The solution is to practice tolerance and to try not to judge other people. There are some words in my piece that build towards anger and hatred. But other words have been inspired by how Mandela lived his life.” Mandela’s art included lithographs of his hand with an outline of Africa in the middle of his palm. His sketches showed an optimistic symbolism, from the picture of a lighthouse as a beacon of hope to Mandela holding the hands of a small child. “The art was deep, it almost gave you a view from Mandela’s cell looking outwards,” said Eligio Batista. “The pieces are simple but elegant, like when he is looking at his hands. They’re not very abstract, they’re more matter-of-fact.” At the Miramar Cultural Center’s botanical gardens, art lovers enjoyed a beautiful night under the stars. People sampled House of Mandela wines and entered a raffle for two gift baskets full of House of Mandela wines, chocolate, and tickets to MCC events. Inside the center, representatives from the Spring of Hope Foundation, which drills wells to provide clean drinking water to the children of South Africa, spoke about their work. The banquet hall held artist’s renderings of additions that will be made to the MCC campus, including a 5,000 seat amphitheater, a separate promenade that can hold 2,000 people for festivals or fairs, and a full-size corporate pavilion for conferences. Miramar Mayor Lori Moseley welcomed the crowd to the art reception. “Looking at his art, you just can’t help but be moved,” said Mayor Moseley. “The art has a simplicity to it, but the symbolism is amazing. This exhibit is part of a dream come true for me. I couldn’t be prouder of what the city has done and where we’re going.” In addition to “Mandela’s Legacy”, the MCC hosted a free movie screening of “Our History is American History” at their theater on February 7th. The following night saw a performance by the Mayhem Poets, a thought-provoking troupe that mixes comedy, hip-hop and theater into their act.

Sunset Lakes Elementary Students Collect Pajamas and Books for Children in Foster Care BY JILL SHARPE

((NEHS) at Sunset Lakes Elementary recently collected over 100 pajamas and books for children in foster care through the Pajama Program, a nationwide drive sponsored by Carter’s and Scholastic books. NEHS Advisors Aileen Soto and Beth Register said that many children were so touched by the drive that they spent their own money from their piggy banks to make the purchases. “The Bruefach family alone donated over 50 pajamas and books,” Register said. Once the drive was over, all the NEHS students sorted the books and pajamas by size and interest level. Then two students, Imani Bodet and Vanessa Ledo, went with their mothers to personally deliver the donations to Ryon Cooke, Philanthropy Director at the Children’s Home Society of Florida. Coote invited the girls for a tour of the facility and even introduced them to two of the babies who live there. Vanessa Ledo said it made her sad to see that some kids don’t live with their parents. “The visit made me realize that living without parents must not be easy, Ledo said. “I just hope our donations brought them a little happiness.” Imani Bodet said it was interesting to see what foster kids lives are like. “I’m really glad we were able to do this for the kids and hope they enjoyed their pajamas and books,” Bodet said. Both the moms were touched by the visit as well. Vanessa’s mother Carmen said the experience was an eye opener for her daughter to realize that not every child gets to live with their family. Imani’s mom Ismary said delivering the donations and having the chance to witness firsthand the needs of foster kids was invaluable. “It is vital that we as parents and educators teach kids to serve their communities, but there is nothing more powerful than them being able to see the needs for themselves and know that they can make a difference,” Bodet said.

What is a Cataract? By Dr. Michael Chesen

ataracts are the leading cause of decreased

vision in adults older than 65. It is the most common surgical procedure for elderly people. You can still get an “age-related” cataract when you are in your 40s or 50s, although most likely it will be small and not rob you of your vision. Only 15 percent of people are affected with cataracts by age 55, but this figure jumps to 50 percent by age 75, and 90 percent by age 85. It is important to note, however, that cataracts worsen over time…so it’s never too late-or early-to try to prevent them and/or treat them.

What is a cataract?

A cataract is an opaque spot on the lens of the eye that you can’t see through. The lens lies behind the iris and the pupil, and works like a camera lens. It focuses light onto the retina at the back of the eye, where an image is recorded. The lens also adjusts the eye’s focus, which allows you to see things clearly, both up close and far away. The lens is made of mostly water and protein. But as we age, some of the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens. This is a cataract. Over time, the cataract may grow larger and cloud more of the lens, making it harder to see. The haze can vary in size, density, and location, which means its effect on your vision will also vary. At first, many people experience an overall reduction in their vision. They may need more light to read by or may have difficulty reading street signs while driving. A cataract can also affect depth perception, which is particularly dangerous for the elderly, who are more prone to falling.

What causes cataracts?

▸▸ Free radicals - natural by products of metabolism - are highly reactive chemicals that cause oxidation, which in turn causes aging. ▸▸ Toxins, pharmaceutical drugs, and smoking ▸▸ Diabetes (high levels of sugar in the blood contribute to cataract formation, so it’s not surprising that diabetics are 3-4 times more likely to have cataracts) ▸▸ The protein in the lens changes from the wear and tear it takes over the years, and hardens and loses its ability to focus.

Treatment of cataracts

Cataracts can only be treated surgically. This procedure would be performed by an Ophthalmologist, and is often an outpatient procedure. The surgery often involves placement of intraocular lens (IOL), which is used to replace the eyes natural lens, which is removed in the cataract surgery. Glasses may be required for far/near correction following the procedure, depending on the type IOL used and the surgical outcome.

A revocable living trust can ensure that you continue to be in control, even if you can’t speak for yourself. You determine who is in control and how your affairs are to be managed should you become disabled, all without the expense, delay, and loss of privacy of a guardianship proceeding. Here are several reasons why you should not try a do-it-yourself foreclosure defense. Is pain relief the only benefit of chiropractic care? No. The central

nervous system controls all other systems (immune, digestive, muscular, etc.). This allows your central nervous system to function optimally, so your entire body functions properly. This will give you improved energy and posture, as well as better sports and job performance. When the nerves and spine are less irritated, patients are happier and have better relationships.

What are the three main phases of chiropractic care? The three main phases of chiropractic care are pain relief, spinal correction and spinal maintenance.

Describe the pain relief phase.

Treatment visits are very frequent during the pain relief phase to quickly decrease inflammation and get you out of crisis as soon as possible.

Describe the spinal correction phase. The spinal correction phase

works on subluxations/postural distortions. Spinal bones shift out of place and put stress on your spine-nerves and discs. This can occur suddenly, from a car accident, or over time, from bad ergonomics. Subluxations/postural distortions dangerously slow down the flow of healing energy that your brain sends down through your spinal cord through your nerves to all of your cells and organs, which depend on this vital life energy to stay alive and healthy. The solution is adjustments. We use our hands to re-align your spine. We also teach you spinal rehabilitation exercises and share proper ergonomic strategies (i.e. proper sleeping, sitting, computer use and flexibility improving exercises).

Spinal maintenance is the most important phase. It usually requires patients to visit twice a month for life. Miramar Police Department’s oldest K-9, a Belgian Malinois named Mac, retired from the police department on February 12th.
