Cutting Colon Cancer Out of the Family Tree About five of every 100 people with colon or rectal cancer have the disease because of a gene Giovanna DaSilva, MD passed down through their family. Researchers at Cleveland Clinic Florida are investing in specialists and resources to identify these families at risk, with the goal of preventing inherited colorectal cancer from ever developing at all. The focus is on familial adenomatous polyposis, or FAP. “Familial” means inherited, or passed down through families. Adenomas are specific types of polyps that can become cancer. People with FAP have a 100 percent chance to get colorectal

cancer, and parents with FAP have a 50/50 chance of passing it down to their children. “We want to get the word out about our program, so we can let as many people as possible know if they’re at risk, educate others in their family and offer each one the latest medical care, education and support,”says Giovanna DaSilva, MD, a Cleveland Clinic Florida colorectal surgeon and researcher. The centerpiece of the program is the Jagelman Registry, a database of patient information of families with FAP. Using this data, physicians at Cleveland Clinic Florida work with teams elsewhere to research the condition and share the latest medicines and other treatments. Besides colon polyps, FAP can also cause growths or

cancer in the stomach, pancreas, bone and other areas. The earliest preventive care ranges from medicines that stop the growth of polyps to simple colonoscopies to remove those that have not yet become cancer. “Using the registry, we’re able to let patients know what screenings they should have and how often. That can save their lives and those of their family members,” Dr. DaSilva says. “We’re definitely very proud of our program, and we’re looking forward to helping more and more patients through it.”

Spring Is Just Around The Corner

T

he arrival of the spring season is welcomed as a sign of renewal and progress all around the world. While we watched news reports of snow and ice storms ravaging our neighbors in the Northern states, we are fortunate that our Florida winter season did not bring any significant cold-weather periods. Now, as the temperatures start to climb, the ocean is slowly warming up and the beaches are calling our names again. We remember why Florida is the place we choose to live. With Spring Break approaching, why not spend some time enjoying the splendors of our Sunshine State. This March 2016 issue also marks the inaugural issue of our newest publication, Our City Aventura. It reaches 20,000+ affluent homes and businesses in Aventura, Golden Beach and Sunny Isles Beach. Welcome to our family! We hope all of our readers enjoy learning about what’s happening in your community and schools, and provide us with story leads on what makes our life in Florida so enjoyable. On this happy note, let’s enjoy all that Florida has to offer and let’s have some fun.

Miramar Residents Celebrate Black History Month SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS

BY JILL SHARPE One Love Crew Contemporary Dance Troupe

Patricia Garrett Harper

Guest speakers like Patricia Garrett Harper kept the day rooted in history as she talked about the book she wrote on the predominantly African-American Richmond Heights neighborhood in Miami. Before taking the stage to officially welcome the crowd, Mayor Wayne Messam talked about what the Black History Month Celebration meant to him. “It’s a great event to celebrate all of the contributions made by African-Americans, both in our city and in our country,” said Mayor Messam. “It’s important for the kids here to know part of our history that may not often be showcased. Our diversity is our strength and we want to keep our history alive.” Inspiration could easily be found inside the Cultural Center and outside on the Town Center lawn. Inside the banquet hall, spoken word artist Rebecca “Butterfly” Vaughns hosted a poetry slam where the three winning poets later performed their pieces on the event’s main stage. Event sponsors Memorial Hospital Miramar and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital held prominent places outside among information booths staffed by organizations like the Victory Foundation for Lymphoma Awareness and the Miramar Fire Department. Families with young children took advantage of free face painting, balloon twisting and storytelling.

T

he weather forecast called for rain but it was all sunny skies on February 6th for Miramar’s Black History Month Celebration. Families flocked to the Town Center Plaza for a day of education and fun. The event had a carnival-like atmosphere, complete with a Ferris wheel, rides, slides and ring toss games. The celebration included a full slate of entertainment, with musical acts like The Woods gospel group, “Freestyle Queen” Trinere, and contemporary vocal trio Sil o et. Hosts Supa Cindy from WEDR The Woods gospel group 99 Jamz and Rodney Baltimore of Hot 101.5 kept the crowd warmed up in between sets of One Love Crew dance troupe, the Carol City Senior High School Jazz Band and marching bands from Miramar High School and Miami Northwestern High School. The school bands paid tribute to the recent passing of Earth, Wind and Fire lead singer Maurice White by playing many of that’s group’s classics like “September”.

recent fundraiser at Silver Lakes Elementary raised $2800 to support Make A Wish Southern Florida, an organization that helps grant wishes for children with life threatening illnesses. The fundraiser, called Paint for Amber’s Passion, was organized by Amber Pristas, a senior at West Broward High School. Pristas, who has been an active volunteer her entire life, said she decided to organize the event because

she was granted a wish a few years back from Make A Wish. “I know how important it is to get the community involved in helping others,” Pristas said. About 100 people of all ages were involved in the event. Participants paid $25 to participate. Each person received a tumbler to paint, all the paint supplies needed to create their masterpiece, a mini painting lesson, an event t-shirt and refreshments. Lots of great food was donated by a local sports

grill, Santinos, Jersey Mikes and other local restaurants. Pristas even recruited Y100 radio to entertain during the painting session and secured gift cards from Bokampers and Texas Roadhouse to raffle off. Representatives from both the Miramar Fire and Police Department were on hand as well. Guests were also invited to visit the Silver Lakes Elementary art gallery. “Everyone said the event was well organized and they had a great time,” said Pristas.

Keeping You Informed About Important Fracking Issues BY WAYNE MESSAM, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF MIRAMAR

I

t has been a few months since Kanter Real Estate filed an application with the State of Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection seeking a permit to drill for oil just six miles west of the City of Miramar. When I raised the red flag on this issue last August, my concerns were that loop holes in current state law and proposed state bills would remove the Home Rule to ban fracking during this legislative session. That is why I have led an ongoing effort to raise awareness and have galvanized South Florida-wide support to prepare for and to stop the advancement of oil drilling in our precious Everglades and Water Supply. We cannot assume our current laws are strong enough to stop this risk. Recently, Broward County Commissioner Beam Furr sponsored an ordinance to ban fracking in Broward County. Although the ordinance passed, House Bill 191 and Senate Bill 318 contain extensive preemption of local government authority to ensure that exploration, drilling and fracking activities do not unreasonably impact adjacent private property owners and land uses. If these bills pass, companies like Kanter Real Estate may have an easier path to drill for oil right through our drinking water supply in the heart of the Everglades. This issue may become a legal fight if any company decides to challenge Broward County’s land use and zoning laws. I will continue to keep the community informed about this issue. It is more vital now that we stay strong and focused on this mission of opposing not only Kanter Real Estate’s oil drilling permit but also HB191 and SB318. Contact your Florida Senator and House Representative today to voice your opposition. When cities and county governments work together, our residents benefit in the end. On March 17th and 18th, Miramar will host the Florida Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials Spring Conference. This organization’s mission is dedicated to embracing elected officials, its members and stakeholders with the support, tools, training, technical assistance and advocacy that facilitates growth, development and leadership capacity. FBC-LEO advocates positions and programs that benefit municipal government, provides a forum for elected officials to meet regularly to discuss and implement ideas to better their respective communities and to promote harmony and cooperation among its members and stakeholders. The conference will focus on workshops, a mobile tour of our city and networking. If interested in attending, log on to http://bit.ly/FBCLEO-SpringConf In April, my annual 3K Walk/Run and Health Fair will take place at Miramar Town Center. As always, you are welcome to run or walk the route, then stay for the FREE Health Fair sponsored by Memorial Hospital Miramar. We encourage families to make a day of this event as we have something to offer for everyone who attends. From the serious runner to the newbie, it’s a go-at-your-own-pace event. We are thrilled to have 24 Hour Fitness join us, providing workout sessions. It is important to focus on health and wellness and what better way to do so than at this fair, joined by the whole family. If you have questions regarding either event mentioned above, please email elaroche@miramarfl.gov<mailto:elaroche@miramarfl.gov> Yours in service,

What is Probate?

W

hen a loved one passes away, before the distribution of property to beneficiaries, his or her estate may need to go through probate administration. Probate is a court-managed process where assets of the deceased are managed, creditors are identified and vetted, taxes are paid, and finally, assets are distributed to family and other loved ones. While each probate is unique, most follow the following steps: ▸▸ Filing of a petition with the proper probate court in the county of the decedent’s residence ▸▸ If there is a written will, the original copy must be submitted to the court and a determination of its validity must be obtained ▸▸ Notice to Beneficiaries under the Will or Notice to Statutory Heirs (if no will exists) ▸▸ Petition to appoint executor , or personal representative for the estate ▸▸ Inventory of estate assets by executor/administrator ▸▸ Publication of Notice to Creditors ▸▸ Payment of estate debt to rightful creditors after 90-day creditor period ▸▸ Sale of estate assets ▸▸ Payment of estate and income taxes, if applicable ▸▸ Distribution of assets to beneficiaries and heirs Does probate administer all property of the deceased? Certain types of assets are called “non-probate assets” and do not go through probate. These include: ▸▸ Property in which you own title as “joint tenants with right of survivorship,” or “tenants by the entireties” ▸▸ Retirement accounts such as IRA and 401(k) accounts with designated beneficiaries ▸▸ Life insurance policies with designated beneficiaries ▸▸ Bank accounts with “pay on death” (POD) or “in trust for” designations ▸▸ Property owned by a living trust. Legal title to such property remains in trust and ultimately is distributed to beneficiaries without having to go through probate. Do I get paid for serving as Personal Representative? Yes. A personal representative can file with the court for reimbursement of legitimate out-ofpocket expenses incurred in the process of management and distribution of the estate. In addition, a personal representative is entitled to statutory fees which vary based on location and the size of the estate. In Florida such fees are deemed reasonable if less than 3% of the first $1 million of probate assets. The personal representative is expected to fulfill his or her fiduciary duties on behalf of the estate with the highest degree of integrity and can be held personally liable for mismanagement of estate assets in his or her care. What does probate cost and how long does it take? The cost can vary based on the value and complexity of the estate. Common expenses of an estate include personal representative’s fees, attorney’s fees, court fees, appraisal costs, and surety bonds. These typically add up to approximately 3 to 7% of the total estate value. Most simple estates can be settled within a year, but because of staffing shortages and backlogs in the court system, the process can take as long as 18 months. More complex estates may take several years to settle. Can I avoid probate? Yes. By properly retitling assets and creating a thoughtful estate plan, you should be able to avoid probate. Estate planning is a deliberate, premeditated act of love. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M. in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the area of estate planning and probate and trust administration for over 30 years. For more information, or to schedule a complimentary estate-planning consultation with Mr. Iden, please contact Iden Law Offices at (954)885-0085.

any doctors believe that around 80% of learning occurs through a child’s eyes. Since a child’s eyesight may change frequently, consistent eye and vision care is crucial to a student’s classroom success. Surprisingly, most parents are not including eye exams as part of their child’s back-to-school doctor’s visit line-up. Furthermore, survey results show that over 50% of parents don’t take their child for an eye exam until at least age three. The AOA actually suggests that children receive their first eye screening at six months, then comprehensive vision examinations starting at age three, before beginning school. Exams should continue to be booked routinely every other year from that point on. Often the issues a child deals with in the classroom can come from sight difficulties. The number of students who are suffering from undiagnosed vision problems is quite high. Over 60% of students classified as students with learningdisabilities actually have undiagnosed vision problems. Your child will be much better off if you take a proactive role in ensuring your child is seeing properly. Don’t push off your child’s first vision screening until kindergarten. Pediatricians should perform a dilated eye exam to discover any serious eye problems within the age of two months. Every child should have a complete eye check-up by age five, since early intervention can make a difference. Additionally as a parent, it’s important to see whether your child is reading sufficiently. Generally, kindergarteners are excited to look at books and try and figure out words. Children that don’t read books may be experiencing a vision problem. Before you assume the worst, it’s a good idea to get a vision examination. For a pediatric eye exam in Pearle Vision Miramar, call us to book an appointment. Remember that the earlier a vision problem is identified and treated, the more likely treatment will be successful. And vision is an essential component for school work. If a child’s eyesight is flawed, increasing visual demands, such as finer print in textbooks or more homework, can considerably change a student’s success. At the same time, new technology in the classroom, such as using interactive SMARTboards, can also possibly exacerbate less obvious vision issues. Without proper eyesight, children may suffer not only at school, but also mentally, physically and emotionally. Before school starts this year, make sure your child’s vision is on par! To book an eye exam for your child, contact Dr. Michael Chesen at 954-437-9733. Pearle Vision is located at 2909 Dykes Rd., in the Fountains of Miramar Shopping Plaza.

t is unfortunate that so many South Florida homeowners have surrendered their home to lenders, or have allowed their property to be sold at a foreclosure sale instead of pursuing all available alternatives in order to preserve their home. The secret to saving homes in South Florida is working with a law firm that (1) can aggressively defend a foreclosure proceeding, (2) that has an in-house loss mitigation department to effectively process a loan modification application, and (3) that has proven bankruptcy experience. To aggressively defend a foreclosure case in South Florida, the attorney you hire must be experienced in the litigation process, the rules of evidence, and must have a clear understanding of the local court rules that alter when and how cases are heard by our local judges. Extensive trial experience is a must, since any given foreclosure action can end up going to trial, and may require presentation of evidence and examination of witnesses. Loan Modification. Some homeowners believe that a foreclosure defense and a loan modification application are mutually exclusive. In other words, they believe that you cannot defend a foreclosure case while attempting to modify your loan. Nothing could be further from the truth. A law firm with a qualified loss mitigation department should organize and submit a complete loan modification application during the course of any foreclosure. In fact, submitting such an application during the foreclosure, improves a homeowner’s chances of obtaining a loan modification. Once a modification is approved, the lender is no longer required to continue paying attorneys to prosecute the foreclosure, and will begin receiving payments on the loan immediately. In short, there are huge incentives for banks to resolve foreclosure cases through loan modification. Bankruptcy. To save your home, the law firm that is assisting you must also have the ability and experience to stop the foreclosure through a timely bankruptcy filing. Even if you have been declined multiple times, presenting a bankruptcy that contains a request to participate in the “MMM Program” can result in a favorable loan modification. The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm are privileged to successfully represent dozens of homeowners in our community. We have foreclosure defense, loan modification and bankruptcy departments. Through the persistent and effective use of these three alternatives, The Arcia Law Firm was able to save 133 homes in 2015, accomplishing our mission of “Saving Families...One Home at a Time.” You can view videos and testimonials of our satisfied clients at our website under “Success Stories.” Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a consumer DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail.

Is Rapid Weight Loss Healthy? Without These Components, There’s a Slim Chance

S

PEED: We all crave it. Whether it is the most souped-up car on the road, choosing expedited shipping, or sneaking into the express line at the grocery store with more than ten items, we want things done fast. Weight loss is no exception. We all want to become slimmer and healthier in 2016 but are faced daily with the ever-present conflict between speed and efficiency in this age of instant gratification. Take this as a simple example: You want to experience rapid weight loss, but you also do not have time to cook dinner after a long, busy day at work. The fast food drive thru calls your name on the drive home, you find yourself back at square one before you know it. So how exactly does one lose weight in a fast but also healthy and efficient manner without having to starve or spend hours at the gym? Unfortunately, you will not find the answer hidden in any of the most famous and “successful” weight loss programs available today. One deceiving solution that seems to be quite obvious for people who are overweight and are looking to slim down is to cut calories while hitting the gym hard daily. These “very-low calorie diets” (or “VLCD’s”) sometimes even come with medical supervision by a physician. Nearly thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours at the gym later, you may have had some success in cutting down about 15-25% of your body weight in a safe but inefficient manner. According to WebMD, however, “weight returns when the diet is stopped and happens rapidly; some experts say it’s best to take a more sustainable approach to weight loss comparable to that of regular diets.” So how do I define a “sustainable approach?” It all begins with close monitoring of a person’s progress on a real-time basis to ensure that he or she not only rapidly loses weight in a safe, efficient manner, but also that the weight is kept off for good. Unfortunately, people who take a crack at fad diets or join the commercialized diet and exercise plans fail to recognize the necessity of two quintessential components of their journeys. The first is daily, attentive care provided by an expert medical physician. This type of care does not mean generic directions that have been prescribed for the general public. What I am emphasizing is one-on-one personalized care. The second key component is the follow-up care. Just as one who struggles with addiction fights temptations daily, so do weight loss patients. What matters most is that they are receiving encouragement to persevere even when they have reached their goals. In fact, just by simply adding these two components to one’s weight loss plan, it has been proven that a person can lose ten times more weight on average than those who have splurged on the leading commercialized diet and exercise plans. As you continue to work towards your weight loss goals in 2016, think ahead to the years to come. Where do you typically fall short? If you lose weight, feel great, and eventually revert to your old, bad habits, it could be that your plan is lacking these two key components to rapid, healthy weight loss. Stoli, an eight-year-old Black Labrador Retriever, is excited to announce that she will be a big sister this coming summer. Stoli’s mom, Local 10 reporter Julie Durda and her husband David Radliff, are expecting their first child in June. Stoli’s favorite person is her mom and she even recognizes her voice when she’s on TV. Her favorite toy is a Frisbee, although they don’t last long as she tends to bite through them. Stoli loves to swim in the pool with Julie when she gets home from doing the noon broadcast and she hates thunderstorms. She was last seen on Social Media touting her new role of guard dog for her baby sister on the way.
