While we struggle to find meaningful things for our kids to do, we should not forget that summers are meant to spend quality time together as a family. Miramar Branch Library Volunteers Honored COMMUNITY NEWS

n April 9, 2015, in celebration of National Library Week and National Volunteer week, Miramar Library held its sixth annual Volunteer Luncheon, honoring approximately 60 volunteers. The luncheon, held at the Miramar Cultural Center, honors volunteers who support the various programs that Miramar Library offers for patrons and residents. These programs include Literacy Programs such as Citizen Test Preparation Class, El Club (Spanish Conversation Class),English Cafe (English Conversation Class) and the library’s free, volunteer instructor based Computer Classes. Through the support of these volunteers, Miramar Library was able to offer 249 Literacy Programs with a total of 1676 attendees over the year and 88 Computer Classes with a total of 608 attendees. Also honored were the library’s fundraising and advocacy group called the “Friends of the Miramar Library”. Miramar Branch Library Manager Chris Marhenke, warmly welcomed the group. “In total, all of you contributed more than 4,000 hours, the equivalent of two full- time staff members,” Marhenke said. Volunteers were presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Miramar Library for their service. Linda Winkler, President of the Friends of the Miramar Library, took the opportunity to thank members of staff of the Miramar Library for their support and assistance to the Friends group. Winkler was presented with the President’s Volunteer Service Award for contributing more than 500 hours of service and received a Gold PVSA pin and a letter from the White House signed by President Obama. Also receiving a President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) was Evelyn Boyles. Boyles received the Bronze Award. Boyles said she was so proud to receive the President’s Volunteer Service Award and especially the letter from the White House with the kind words from President Obama which talked about the importance of volunteering, especially during difficult economic times. “I have always felt giving back to my community is extremely important but getting acknowledged by our government was extra special,” Boyle said.

he City of Miramar’s Fire and Police Department joined forces on May 30th to work side-by-side in the workshop of Foresters Build-A-Bear in the Training Room at Miramar Fire Station 84. The joint effort had these brave men and women in blue and red, who see tragic events each day and

help the City’s citizen’s through those tough times, building teddy bears from scratch and donating those bears to the families that they help who are in need each day - particularly the children. According to Fire Chief Keith Tomey, III, “The intent of the bears is for Miramar Fire and Police to have

them available when on emergency calls and children are involved - either directly or indirectly.” Police and Fire officials say it is their way of giving back to those who are affected by life events each day and sometimes all a person wants or needs is a hug - from a Miramar Build-A-Bear.

Miramar Special Needs Artist Proves That Art Can Be a Healing Therapy COMMUNITY NEWS

oung artists often need a place to hone their skills, and Debra Miller of Miramar has found an art center to help develop her talent while getting her artwork showcased at a recent exhibit. Miller, who is on the autism spectrum, recently displayed her work as part of the Third Annual “Inside/ OUT” exhibition at ArtServe in Fort Lauderdale from May 8th-29th. The exhibit focused on art as healing therapy. Miller has been working in a variety of artistic mediums since becoming involved with the Circle of Friends and Stars non-profit arts organization. She recently attended Miramar High School and has

been coming to the Circle of Friends and Stars art center for about three years, starting with taking a leading role in the group’s theatrical production of ‘Springtime’. She also works in chalk, pastel, mosaics and making vases. “It’s so nice to have programs like this for kids as so many times kids like her are left out of everything,” said Sue Gold, Miller’s guardian. “She gets to socialize instead of being stuck somewhere in a home. It’s a really structured program. The center has expanded her horizons tremendously. She went from one stroke of a crayon to full-on painting. She’s not afraid of anything now.” Stories like Miller’s are familiar to Dixie Lee Hedrington, the Founder and Executive Director of the Circle of Friends and Stars. The agency opened up their 1,900 square foot facility in December 2014 and their mission is to be “a caring community supporting the arts and disabilities.” They hold classes taught by professional artists for children and adults and currently serve about 400 people ranging from five to 75 years old. “When Debra first came here, she was very reserved, but with encouragement we found what appealed to her,” said Hedrington. “She had the capacity to focus, so we started with the butterfly piece and it took about nine weeks to complete. It really gives the students a sense of accomplishment and pride. We’re about

promoting visibility and inclusion for special needs artists. These artists should be called when opportunities arise.” Circle of Friends and Stars are asking for community members to donate money, art supplies or their time through volunteering. Autism in Flight Program Prepares Students for Air Travel BY JILL SHARPE

tudents from Miramar with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) recently had the opportunity to see what it would be like to take a trip on an airplane. Through a JetBlue program called Autism in Flight, students from Coconut Palm Elementary and Silver Lakes Elementary along with their families, had the opportunity to practice the travel experience in a realistic, yet relaxed setting, ultimately allowing families and children to be better prepared for future travel. On May 20th at JetBlue Terminal 3, students and their parents practiced checking-in, going through TSA security and boarding the plane at the gate. Trained JetBlue crewmembers provided assistance throughout the process and behavioral consultants from the Broward County Public School System volunteered throughout the day to assist students with any issues. Students sat in airline seats, fastened their seatbelts and were served by in-flight crew members. Students had the opportunity to meet and interact with the pilots and crewmembers simulating a true Traci Borkowski and her son Zachary The Henry Family onboard experience. Miramar Celebrates It’s Haitian and Caribbean-American Heritage Community News

iramar Mayor Wayne M. Messam and Stephanie Gilles Consul General of Haiti held a reception on May 18th at the Miramar Cultural Center in honor of Haitian Heritage Month. The event, hosted by radio personality Elizabeth Guerin, included a silent auction of original and exceptional artwork by Wilfrid Daleus and Jocelyn Telson as well as a dance performance by the Nancy St. Leger Dance Troupe. On June 20th, the City hosted a Caribbean-American Month Celebration at Shirley Branca Park. It was a fun-filled day with a variety of food trucks, music, dancing and entertainment. Popular bands and singers of Caribbean heritage and different genres of music performed including the “Electric Boogie” (Electric Slide) Queen Marcia Griffiths; singer and composer Glen Washington; the King of Salsa Rap, Willie Panama; singer Garner; and Konpa band, Dat 7.

Miramar High School Student Named a Gates Millennium Scholar

anisha Barrett, a recent graduate of Miramar High School (MHS) was recently honored as one of only eight Broward County Public School students to be named as a Gates Millennium Scholar. The program provides a full scholarship for the cost of a student’s college education, including graduate school. This is a brainchild of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and includes mentoring and academic support along with the funding. With just 1,000 winners nationwide out of about 50,000 applicants, Barrett was understandably anxious about hearing back on her application. “I was so nervous, I checked the mailbox one day and there was nothing there,” she said. “The next day was the same thing but I kept the faith. The next day, I saw a big envelope in the mailbox and just started crying. I showed it to my brother and my mom. I was just so happy.” Barrett will be attending the University of Central Florida this fall to study marketing. “My dream job is to be a voice actress,” she notes. “A marketing degree is very flexible and I can still pursue voice acting. I’ve always watched and loved cartoons, especially anything from Pixar like The Incredibles. My voice is unique and very soft. I get lots of compliments on it.”

In addition to graduating high school with a 5.1 grade point average, Barrett took on many extracurricular activities. She served as President of Students Against Destructive Decisions, a group that advocates for students to not get involved in drugs or alcohol. She participated in beach clean-ups, anti-drug “Above the Influence” marches, and was part of an organization that would collect pet food and supplies to donate to animal welfare agencies. Barrett’s achievement has made the entire MHS community proud. “It’s a great accomplishment for our school to have a Gates scholarship winner,” said Elaine Mamby, an advisor at MHS. “Lanisha is so unassuming and is an awesome student. She’s a shining star. “Our students have won millions of dollars in scholarships. “This year we have kids going to Brown and Cornell. One former student just graduated from medical school and came back here to thank everyone.” Looking back, Barrett knows that while the Gates scholarship’s application process was challenging, she advises any interested high school students that it is well worth it. “Even though you have to write eight essays, if you put your heart into it, at the end of the day, you can get a full scholarship,” she said. “All that hard work shouldn’t hinder you.”

robate is a lawsuit I file against myself after I die, at my own expense, for the benefit of my creditors and my heirs.” When a loved one passes away, his or her estate goes through a court-managed process called probate administration whereby their Will is evaluated by the court to determine if it was validly drawn and executed. Assets of the deceased are then collected, managed and eventually distributed to creditors and finally to beneficiaries. Without probate administration, bank and investment accounts of the decedent are frozen. Furthermore, any real estate owned by the decedent may not be sold until authorized by the court. Probate administration involves the following steps: ▸▸ Collecting and securing estate assets ▸▸ Locating the original Will ▸▸ Retaining an attorney (required by Florida law) ▸▸ Filing of a Petition for Administration with the proper probate court ▸▸ Giving notice to beneficiaries under the Will or to statutory heirs (if no Will exists) ▸▸ Filing a petition to appoint a Personal Representative ▸▸ Preparation of inventory and appraisal of estate assets by a Personal Representative ▸▸ Publication of Notice to Creditors in local newspaper ▸▸ Determination and payment of estate debts to rightful creditors ▸▸ Payment of estate taxes, if applicable ▸▸ Distribution of assets to beneficiaries or heirs Probate administration is: ▸▸ Expensive. Typically 5% to 8% of the value of the assets in the estate. ▸▸ Time consuming. In South Florida, even the simplest probate administration takes an average of 10 to 20 months. ▸▸ Open to the public. Court records may be viewed by all. Can probate administration be avoided? Yes. You can certainly avoid the expense and delay of probate administration by owning all assets jointly with others, or have all accounts established with designated beneficiaries. While this approach seems like the best solution, it may not be. Joint ownership or beneficiary designations severely limit your ability to control exactly whom will receive your property, when they receive it, and how the property is to be managed. Moreover, if you have young or unsophisticated beneficiaries, their inheritance may be lost, stolen, or squandered. Creating and funding a revocable living trust is an excellent way to avoid probate administration. A revocable living trust allows you to control what you have so it is given to whom you want, when you want, in the way you want, and all at the lowest overall cost to you and your loved ones. There are situations, however, where a revocable living trust may not be appropriate. We recommend that you consult with an experienced estate planning attorney to explore all options and establish a plan that works for you. Estate planning is a deliberate, premeditated act of love. Still Think You Can Defend Foreclosure and Obtain a Modification on Your Own? By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Attorney

f you still think you can defend the foreclosure of your home or obtain a mortgage modification on your own, here are some sobering facts to consider: ▸▸ When the Florida legislature approved additional funding to clear the foreclosure backlog in June 2013, it also ordered our court system to clear 256,000 foreclosure cases per year through 2016. That’s more than 700 cases per day. ▸▸ Unlike other Florida judges, foreclosure judges are effectively temps who don’t have to face voters. ▸▸ Today, most foreclosure cases are set for trial or final judgment within 6-8 months, and any continuances of trial are routinely denied. ▸▸ Mortgage giant Freddie Mac pays mortgage servicers “bonuses” for expediting foreclosures and charges a daily penalty for delayed foreclosures.
