Make Time for Family
T
his summer ’ s World Cup fever has subsided,
vacation memories are slowly fading away, and the kids are settling back into their school routines. Our lives are slowly returning to “normal.” Before we become bogged down with after school activities, sports and music lessons, let us not forget that the fall season in Florida has plenty to offer for fun family time. Best of all, the sun is not quite so scorching hot, but the ocean waters are still warm and beautiful. So, turn the TVs and game consoles off for a bit and get out there and enjoy the surf, go shelling, visit the Florida Keys, take a tour through the Everglades, visit the oldest town in North America (Saint Augustine), catch some fish, or visit your favorite characters in the theme parks of Orlando and Tampa. Whatever you choose to do, do it with family and friends. Our hectic lives force us to spend time separated from our loved ones for most of the day at school or work, so make sure you take the opportunity to enjoy each other’s company whenever you can. Sincerely, Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Miramar Trail Blazers Receive Recognition at Gala Reception By Jill Sharpe
T
he month of J une ended on a high note as M iramar held a Caribbean-American Heritage Month Gala Reception at the Miramar Cultural Center. People gathered at the center’s Ansin Family Art Gallery on Monday, June 30th to recognize local trail blazers for their contributions to business, culture, and public service. “The people of the Caribbean diaspora have such a rich heritage, and whether you’re from an English-, French-, or Dutchspeaking country, we’re all welcomed here in Miramar,” said City Commissioner Alexandra Davis, who hosted the reception. “There are so many people who tirelessly make contributions to our community, and we want to highlight some of those efforts tonight.” After escaping a typical late afternoon South Florida rainstorm, entering the art gallery brought people to the Migration of the Sign exhibit held in conjunction with the gala. This art exhibit was thoughtfully curated by Babacar M’Bow and included acrylic paintings by Koffi Kayiga and Cecil Cooper and mixed media art by Karl Jerry Craig. As attendees filled up the reception hall, they were greeted by the warm sounds of Randy Corinthian on the saxophone and a veritable feast of Caribbean food. Jamaican patties, fried conch, plantains, ceviche, and Jamaican rum cake were a big hit with those in attendance. Performers from the Salsabor Florida dance school wowed the crowd with their Latin and Afro-Caribbean rhythms. Before addressing the crowd about what makes Miramar such an outstanding place to live, Vice Mayor Yvette Colbourne connected her personal story to the city at large. “I’m from Panama, and have family in Jamaica and other Caribbean countries so it’s great to see the city recognize Caribbean heritage,” said Vice Mayor Colbourne. “It is important to come together and recognize individuals who have worked so hard.” The focus of the evening was to honor community leaders in a variety of fields. In the realm of arts and entertainment, Sydney Roberts was commended for the special events he coordinates and Vernon Brooks for the stilt dancing shows he brought over from the Virgin Islands. Guylene Berry was applauded for her radio

work, Wayne Ramnarine for his efforts to bring cricket from Trinidad to South Florida, and Tyrone Robertson received an award for his popular First Friday social events. Many of the award recipients were noted for their extensive background in community service. U.S. Congresswoman Frederica Wilson accepted an award for public service and spoke about her work on immigration and family reunification legislation. Magaly Prezeau was honored for her efforts in opening the Community Access Center, which connects the Haitian community to health insurance, food, and tax preparation assistance. “I just want to make sure that no one in Miramar is left behind, whether it’s with financial issues or access to food. I want to be there for them,” said Prezeau. “I’ve lived in Miramar since 1985 and have seen it grow right before my eyes. I’m just a public servant at heart.” Alex Casas was recognized for both a deep commitment to community service and a keen business acumen. Having made a name for himself globally in the construction business, Casas has volunteered for numerous municipal committees. “I’m a businessman and I try to bring out-of-the-box experiences and ideas here,” said Casas. “I love participating in the city and I want to keep Miramar moving forward.” The awards ceremony concluded by recognizing Errol Morrison for his West Indies grocery store that has become a center of community life and Tony Sanchez for his La Cocina Puertorriquena restaurant that brings a taste of the Caribbean to Miramar. While the calendar may say that June, and Caribbean-American Heritage Month with it, is over, many attendees stressed that the contributions that CaribbeanAmericans make occur regardless of the month. “This was an opportunity to honor people that have done so much for the community. I totally respect what they have accomplished and recognize the obstacles they have overcome,” said State Senator Oscar Braynon. “The award winners will still continue working, whether it’s doing their radio show, promoting the game of cricket, or hosting First Fridays, and all of them will bring greater awareness of Caribbean culture year-round.”

Miami Dolphins Choose a Cheerleader From Miramar For Their 2015 Swimsuit Calendar By Jill Sharpe

t ’ s official . M iramar native J odi has been chosen as M iss March
for the 2015 Miami Dolphins Swimsuit Calendar. Jodi, who has lived in Miramar her whole life, attended Somerset Academy from kindergarten all the way through high school. She is currently a student at Florida International University studying Mass Communications in hopes of being an entertainment news reporter. Growing up in Miramar she enjoyed all the kids day festivals and Miramar community activities where she performed with her dance school. “As a little girl, performing at the Miramar festivals helped me overcome my stage fright,” Jodi said. Nowadays, Jodi says it is very rewarding to say she is a part of the internationally known Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders. “Not only is it a dream come true doing what I love with such an elite squad, but also it is awesome to do so while cheering on a team I’m such a fan of.”

When asked to describe her experience as a Miami Dolphins Cheerleader, Jodi said stepping onto the field every game day is so special. “I’m filled with adrenaline as I hear the fans scream with so much excitement. Every day I grow fonder of my role and I’m so happy I took the opportunity to try out as I have a bond with my teammates that will carry on forever and memories that will last a lifetime.” Emily Snow, Miami Dolphins Director of Cheerleaders, said she is very proud of Jodi and all the cheerleaders. “It is a joy to see them develop from young women to the glamorous and confident role models that they become throughout their time with the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders.” The 2015 calendar was shot on the grounds of Casa De Campo in La Ramona, Dominican Republic. Jodi photographed in a white ruffled two-piece swimsuit overlooking the gorgeous clear blue water of Catalina Island. She wore a red beaded necklace that was made by locals and purchased right on the beach. “The shoot had so much energy from the crowd that gathered around and the photographer made me feel great,” said Jodi. “It was an experience I won’t soon forget!” The 2015 calendar can be ordered through www. DolphinsCheerleaders.com. The cost of the calendar is $17.00 plus shipping and handling.

Mad City Money Simulation Teaches Teens How to Manage Their Finances By Jill Sharpe
T
he City of M iramar and First
Florida Credit Union hosted a free, hands-on money management workshop called Mad City Money on June 25th at the Miramar Multi Service Complex located at 6700 Miramar Parkway. During the Mad City Money simulation, teens, ages 13-18, were required to use their knowledge of money, math skills and feelings about important life choices. The teens were transported into the future where they had instant families, careers and bills to pay. As they moved from station to station they had lots of choices to make including how much to spend on housing, transportation, food,

clothing, day care and other necessities. The simulation also included a mall for “wants”; a car salesperson; a commissionbased realtor, several other merchants, and “The Fickle Finger of Fate.” Refreshments were served and the teens had the opportunity to win raffle prizes. Mayor Lori C. Moseley said money management skills aren’t learned until most teens enter college and for some, long after. “By that time, debt has often accumulated,” she said. “It’s important that we start teaching these lessons now to avoid the Generation Y can’t I manage my finances.”

the Internet to guide homebuyers and sellers on how to complete their own real estate transactions, it leaves one to wonder whether using a real estate agent is becoming a thing of the past. If you do the work yourself, you can save on the commission from the transaction. In the long run, however, doing it by yourself could end up costing you more than a Realtor’s commission. Buying or selling a home is a major financial and emotional responsibility. For some, it is the largest financial decision of their lives. Below are a few reasons why it is important to use a professional to help complete the transaction. Increased Access / Added Convenience – A Realtor’s full-time job is to act as the transaction broker between the buyer and seller. Although you have access, the Realtor has direct access to all the other properties listed by other agents. Experienced Realtors simply know what needs to be done to get a deal together. If you are looking to buy, a Realtor will focus on homes that meet your criteria and make the appointments for you to view the homes as they become available. If you are buying on your own, this becomes your task for each and every home and could become overwhelming after the first few attempts. Similarly, if you are looking to sell your home For Sale By Owner, you will have to solicit calls from interested buyers, answer questions, make appointments and perform the many other tedious tasks that the transaction brings. You may not be familiar with many of them. Negotiating Is an Art – Many buyers and sellers feel like they don’t need a Realtor at all. They believe that direct negotiations between buyers and sellers is more transparent and allows both parties to better look after their own best interests. This could be true depending on the parties involved in the negotiating. Unfortunately, this isn’t always an easy relationship. A Realtor can assist by speaking on behalf of buyers and sellers in tough transactions and smoothing things over to keep them from getting too personal. Contracts Can Be Hard to Handle – For Sale and Purchase Contract get are very detailed oriented and can get very complicated when things go wrong. An experienced Realtor deals with the same Contracts and conditions on a regular basis, and is familiar with which conditions should be used, when they can be safely removed, and how to use the contract to protect you, whether you’re buying or selling. In conclusion, while buyers and sellers try to wiggle their way around using Professional Realtors, the process isn’t as simple as many people tend to assume. When you get into a difficult situation, it can really pay to have a professional on your side - especially since it may be the largest financial decision of your life! at MCC, said Broward County School administrators wanted a play that was associated with a book so that they could give it to the children afterwards to read. Added Williams, “The content of the show was good for the little ones.” That sentiment was seconded by Lori Canning, Ed.D, Acting Director of Early Childhood for Broward County Schools, who coordinated the event with MCC. According to Canning, for many of the students, “This was their first theater experience and that is what it is all about for us. It creates vocabulary, background knowledge and language development through hands-on active and engaging experiences.” This will not be the last time they will visit the theater. According to Williams, “There are plans to do more in the next season at The Miramar Cultural Center. This is one of the many relationships we have developed with The Broward County School Board and we are excited to accommodate the next generation of book and theater lovers. “ The upcoming season of kids and teen series at the Miramar Cultural Center is as follows: ▸▸ School House Rock, LIVE - Saturday, November 1st at 2 p.m. ▸▸ Mayhem Poets - Sunday, February 8th at 5 p.m. ▸▸ The Little Engine That Could Earns Her Whistle - Saturday, February 28th at 2 p.m. ▸▸ Jumpin’ Jazz Kids - Saturday, March 21st at 2 p.m. ▸▸ Rapunzel, Rapunzel, A Very Hairy Fairy Tale - Saturday, April 11th at 2 p.m. ▸▸ My Heart in a Suitcase - Saturday, April 18th at 2 p.m. For more information, visit www.miramarculturalCenter.org

Newest Laser Treatment for Foot Fungus By Neal M. Bullock, DPM, PA
G
Are You Ready? Do you have a thoughtful and comprehensive estate plan which includes: • Caring for you and your loved ones in case of disability or death? • Protecting loved ones from creditors and predators after you are gone? • Providing parents with access to college kids’ health status and medical decision making in emergencies? • Ensuring your babysitter knows what to do if you don’t return when expected?
enesis Plus is a safe , effective laser treat-
ment for toes and feet, which is provided in a private office setting. Proven to be both a safe and effective solution, as well as FDA approved, GenesisPlus treats nail infection (onychomycosis), more commonly known as toenail fungus. The most common sources of infection include swimming pools, public showers, gyms and nail salons. Tight fitting shoes and nail trauma can lead to infection also. Genetic susceptibility, poor health and increasing age are also factors that increase the risk of nail infection. It is important to watch for these common signs: ▸▸ discolored nails ▸▸ yellow streaks under the nail ▸▸ distorted or thickened nails ▸▸ brittle/ crumbly or ragged nails ▸▸ separation of nail from underlying skin ▸▸ build-up of debris such as nail fragments or skin under the nail ▸▸ white spots or streaks on the nail surface

If detected, you have become an excellent candidate for GenesisPlus. GenesisPlus passes through the nail and the surrounding tissue with no adverse effects. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment in the fungi, which causes the pigment to heat, and this kills or damages the fungal organism. The treatment can result in your nails growing normally. A single treatment session takes approximately 40 minutes to treat five to ten nails. Most patients show improvement after one treatment and total number of treatments can vary. Most patients describe the procedure as being comfortable with a small hot pinch at the end which resolves quickly. The majority of patients can resume normal activities immediately. Successful treatment results in new nail growth and healthy nails, which may take up to 12 months. Dr. Neal M. Bullock’s office is located at 17013 Pines Boulevard, in Pembroke Pines. Why Should Teens Consider Contact Lenses? By Michael Chesen, OD
N
o adolescent likes to be caught wearing
something that makes them different. For some teenagers, eyeglasses can often feel that way. Just the thought of wearing glasses can send a teenager running in the other direction. In comparison, a newly published report says that kids and teenagers who wear contact lenses feel a significant enhancement in their appearance. The research results show that starting at the age of eight, children may prefer being offered the choice of contact lenses. The research was recorded in Eye & Contact Lens, which is published by the Contact Lens Association. Just how do contacts enhance an adolescent’s self-esteem? Young adults are self-conscious and they often feel better about themselves when glasses are not the center of their appearance. Contact lenses may help teens feel greater selfesteem and more comfortable around others by providing them with a less visible option for vision correction.

Although teens are frequently fitted with contact lenses, children under 13 are not usually given the option of lenses. Many eye doctors and parents don’t believe that children are mature enough to deal with them properly. With the right instruction, however, children as young as eight years old are very capable of wearing and caring for contacts and they should be offered the option. Generally, before your child purchases contacts, you should consult your optometrist to find out about any potential issues your child might have. Our Miramar optometry practice can help you determine the right prescription for your teen’s contacts. If your child or teenager is in need of vision correction, why not consider contact lenses? Through just a simple soft lens, you can enhance your teen’s self-image. With the large array of contacts on the market, you and your eye care practitioner can work with your child to decide what type of lens is most suitable for their character and lifestyle. For further assistance with your summer eye care and eyewear needs, contact Dr. Michael Chesen at 954-437-9733. Pearle Vision is located at 2909 Dykes Rd., in the Fountains of Miramar Shopping Plaza.

Small Single Portal Knee Arthroscopic Surgery (SPA) By Fernando A. Moya, MD, PhD
A
rthroscopic surgery is the way most S ports
Medicine doctors in the world are able to get inside the joint (like the knee) to fix, repair, clean up and do a debridement of the joint. Patients need arthroscopic surgery because they injured their joint and have injured their cartilage, have loose bodies, or have diseases that do not respond or get better with the classical nonsurgical approach. This is also the most common way we operate patients with ACL ligament tears, meniscus tears, rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability and intra-articular loose bodies. I must emphasize that a surgical procedure in sports medicine is only needed when the patient has severe problems with the shoulder and knee joint. Most of the time, patients immediately after an injury need to be treated with medication by mouth like antiinflammatory medication, icing of the injured part, elevation of the extremity and immediate rest. If the pain and disability does not go away the patient needs to visit an emergency room or an orthopedic surgeon. Usually x-rays are taken to make sure there is no bone problem like a fracture and a complete physical exam done. Further testing with an MRI scan may be needed in some cases. The purpose of the arthroscopic surgery is to make a patient painless and functional. This new technology has revolutionized medicine and continues to evolve to the point that today I am able to do the arthroscopic surgery doing ONE single small incision. Most surgeons who do arthroscopic surgery need to do two or three small incision poke holes, to do the surgery in that joint. Those extra two or three holes are still needed for other complex surgeries. This new technique uses ONLY ONE small incision and was created as a less intrusive method to operate joints especially the knee joint. Through that one incision I am able to do many of the arthroscopic surgeries commonly done in the knee and I DO NOT need to do two or three small incisions. The most common surgeries that I can do with a single incision portal are surgery for meniscus tear, loose bodies inside the joint, diagnostic arthroscopy, debridement of infection inside the knee joint and synovectomies. Again, more complex surgeries will still require the orthopedic surgeon to use two or three extra holes to do the surgery. The advantages of this single portal arthroscopic surgery has to do with reducing the number of incisions from three or two to just one single incision causing most patients to report less pain, better immediate movement, less swelling of the joint and faster recovery or rehabilitation. This will then allow the patient to start the standard rehabilitation protocol faster to resume activities of daily living like walking, standing and eventually recovering full sport capacity without pain, swelling or locking episodes. In conclusion, single portal knee arthroscopy is a new technique that continues to provide new more effective ways to help the patients go back into an active lifestyle and a the sport they want to play. Dr. Moya is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in knee and shoulder surgery. He completed his doctoral fellowship at Harvard University, receiving his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Robert Wood Johnson Medical School). Dr. Moya completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Puerto Rico. He practices at the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine located in Weston at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, (954) 389-5900, and in Pembroke Pines at 17842 NW 2nd Street, (954) 430-9901. Florida’s Hardest Hit/ Foreclosure Programs If you’ve experienced a financial hardship due to job loss or reduced hours resulting in a reduction of your income, the federal government has allocated funding to the state of Florida to help people in those situations. It’s free to apply and those who qualify may be eligible for up to 12 months of mortgage payments. The Florida Housing Finance Corporation was directed by the US Treasury to create and administer foreclosure prevention assistance programs that address the unique issues of our state. The Treasury requires that Florida use a portion of these funds specifically for targeted unemployment programs that provide temporary assistance to eligible homeowners. In the 3rd round of funding, Florida received $236.8 million which added to the initial allocation of $418 million and brought Florida’s total funding to $656.8 million. More recently, the Treasury announced a fourth round of funding, awarding Florida an additional $401 million; this brings Florida’s total award amount to more than $1 billion.

New Loan Modification Program that is 85% Successful By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
I
t has been about one year since the Loss M itigation M ediation
Program (“LMM”) was launched in all South Florida Bankruptcy Courts. This new program started as a direct response to the frustration experienced by many homeowners who have tried to modify their home loans time and time again without success. The success rate for traditional loan modifications outside of bankruptcy is less than 15%. So far, about 85% of the eligible homeowners that have completed the LMM program have obtained permanent loan modifications with significantly better loan terms, lower interest rates, and even huge principal forgiveness. Here are some of the other benefits of the LMM Program that you need to consider: ▸▸ Under the LMM program, the foreclosure process stops immediately and any foreclosure sale date is automatically cancelled without further hearing. ▸▸ The entire program is court supervised, a mediator will be appointed to your case, and all negotiations must be concluded and a decision rendered within 150 days of the date a mediation Order is signed by the Court. ▸▸ Another frustrating feature for homeowners about conventional loan modification applications is that lenders continuously misplace documents. Under the LMM program there are no more “lost documents” by the bank, since all documents are uploaded to a single website to which all parties have immediate access. ▸▸ If the lender refuses to provide a timely response to a completed loan modification application, or even refuses to participate in the program, the homeowner now has the right to seek assistance from a federal judge to ensure that the lender complies with its obligations. This enforcement component is not available to homeowners trying to do a loan modification on their own. ▸▸ The program applies to both Chapter 7 and 13 if you are surrendering a property, but loan modifications are only available in a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. ▸▸ There is an increased likelihood that your Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Plan will be confirmed by the Trustee given that once the mortgage loan is modified under LMM, the homeowner’s future financial picture is more clearly defined. While these are exciting new benefits for any homeowner struggling with a loan modification of their mortgage, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy petition is NOT a do it yourself proposition. Many consumers that attempt to file their own, have their cases dismissed with prejudice for 180 days for failure to comply with the Bankruptcy Code. This means you cannot refile for bankruptcy during that time. Any homeowner even considering this alternative must seek sound legal advice from attorneys with Chapter 13 bankruptcy experience, like the knowledgeable attorneys and staff at the Arcia Law Firm. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or frustrated with a loan modification, call the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation with an attorney, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Let Us Entertain You Lori C. Moseley, Mayor
D
ear M iramar R esidents:
It’s an exciting time here in the City of Miramar! We’ve come full circle from the time of global recession which brought communities around the world to a complete halt. Rather than panic and resort to drastic measures, it was a time for us to reinvent ourselves, buckle down and weather the storm. Though this country may not be completely out of the storm’s eye, I’m confident we can dust off our surf boards and prepare to ride the “come to Miramar” wave! I’m thrilled to share with you Miramar’s continued efforts to provide quality programming and offer event locations I’m sure will put the sun back in your summer and provide lasting memories for you and your families. The Miramar Cultural Center | Arts Park is proud to present our Around the World in Culture, Teen Pop Culture, Kids Culture and Signature Series events. Our 2014-2015 theatre series will highlight and present such acts as, Swan Lake, From Broadway to Opera, the Cachao Mamabo All Stars, School House Rock and Jumpin’ Jazz Kids. Mayhem Poets. Our Kids/Teens series, has been dubbed “an amazing ride” by the New York Times. This mind- boggling performance has been described as “the Simpsons meets Malcolm X at a Notorious B.I.G. Concert.” These theatre-trained, comedically gifted, lyrical virtuosos seamlessly blend raw elements of hip-hop, theatre, improv and standup comedy to tell gut-wrenching truths that leave audiences forever changed.
Minnie is a seven year old Shitzu mix. Leila is her favorite person and her favorite toy is a stuffed duck. Minnie loves to play with Leila and she loves treats. Minnie dislikes getting dried with a blow dryer and being home alone. Her favorite thing to do is to go for car rides. Minnie was last seen laying on her back dog dreaming.
