The Other November Day to Give Thanks
M
ost Americans gather with family and friends on the fourth Thursday of November to give thanks and enjoy a wonderful meal. This great tradition dates back to pilgrims and Native Americans eating wild turkey in New England, or so the story goes. There is another day in November, however, when we should all give thanks as well. On November 11th we celebrate Veterans Day. It is the day when we recognize the men and women who have risked life and limb to protect us, and our way of life. On Veteran’s Day, I think of true American Heroes, like Pembroke Pines native Patrick Xavier, Jr., a Marine who gallantly gave his life for his country. I also think of the countless Lance Corporals and Specialists, Sailors and Airmen, who we rarely read about. These faceless heroes silently labor away, frequently at risk, yet are seldom recognized. They don’t ask for much. Each one of them felt a calling to volunteer; some because they wanted to prove something to themselves; others, because of a deep desire to “give back” to their country. Perhaps we should go out of our way on November 11th to do something nice for them. So, if you see a service member on that special day, buy him a drink, pick up the tab for her lunch, or simply say “thank you” or “Oorah!” It doesn’t sound like much, but it might be all that they need. Happy Thanksgiving, and to all those veterans out there, Thanks! Sincerely, Terry Jaillet President & Publisher

If you think you are safe from lung cancer because you have never smoked, think again. While cigarette smoking is the No. 1 cause, there are other factors that can result in the development of lung cancer. Lung Cancer Stigma
A false perception is prevalent in society today, that lung cancer is the result of a personal choice to smoke. As a result, lung cancer patients are not always viewed in the same light as patients with other types of cancer. “There’s a huge stigma associated with lung cancer because the majority of people who die from it are either smokers or former smokers,” says Cleveland Clinic Florida oncologist Bruno Bastos, MD. “But, tobacco is one of the most addictive substances known to man. Addiction is a disease, and nobody deserves to get lung cancer.”

Although smoking is certainly a contributing factor, the reality is that anyone can be exposed to second-hand smoke or other toxins, as well as have a family history of lung cancer, which can also trigger the disease. “You do not have to be a smoker in order to develop lung cancer, and it should be a major concern for everyone,” Dr. Bastos said. The stigma associated with lung cancer has also had a negative effect on research. Although statistics from the Centers for Disease Control

Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment Despite the lack of funding for research, there has still been great progress made in lung cancer diagnosis and treatments over the last several years. “There are many different types of lung cancer,” according to Dr. Bastos, “and genetic testing has helped researchers develop therapies that target specific types of lung cancer cells.” Additionally, therapies already approved to treat skin cancer, are being considered for lung cancer as well. “Immune-based therapies, in which the immune system is primed to attack tumors, are also showing potential for treating lung cancer,” said Dr. Bastos. There have been some other innovations over the past few years as well. Development of screening tools such as CT scans aid in early detection of lung cancer, which Dr. Bastos says “could save tens of thousands of lives.”
Lung Cancer: Novel Targeted Immunotherapy Cancer cells are not like normal cells, in that they rapidly divide and frequently mutate or change in order to evade the immune system. Immunotherapy is a type of treatment that stimulates the body’s immune system to target and destroy cancer cells. A new investigational research trial, called CheckMate, is now being offered in select sites across the country to patients with advanced lung cancer. “This trial involves a new immunotherapy approach that specifically activates the immune system to fight lung cancer tumor cells, without harming healthy tissue,” according to Cleveland Clinic Florida oncologist, Bruno Bastos, MD. Cleveland Clinic Florida has been designated the first academic medical center in the region to participate in this cutting-edge immunotherapy trial. Dr. Bastos states, “We are pleased to now offer this treatment to patients with advanced lung cancer.”

Former President Bill Clinton Addresses Clergy and Community Leaders in Miramar BY JILL SHARPE
H
Miramar’s development had not taken place since his last memory of the area post Hurricane Andrew. The private meeting lasted over an hour as more than 150 specialty-invited guests sat and listened intently as the former President spoke about what’s at stake with this election. “It was an honor to host President Clinton on this historic day, said Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam. “I was able to share the many accomplishments of our city and stressed that issues challenging cities must be a priority for our next President.”
istory was made in the City of Miramar on September 7th when President Bill Clinton held a meeting to address clergy and community leaders from Broward and Miami Dade Counties at the city’s Miramar Cultural Center. Former President Bill Clinton spoke on a number of issues regarding the upcoming elections - the importance of registering voters, getting the community out to vote, Supreme Court nominations and more. He also marveled about Miramar’s growth, the city’s strong economy and the beautiful City Hall and Cultural Center.

Miramar Police Headquarters Receives Prestigious LEED® Gold Building Certification BY JILL SHARPE
T
he City of Miramar received the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) distinction of LEED® Gold certification for its newly constructed state-of-theart Police Headquarters. LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance. The Miramar Police Headquarters is a 65,000 sq. ft. facility located on the City of Miramar’s Town Center property at 11765 City Hall Promenade (adjacent to City Hall at 2300 Civic Center Place), Miramar, FL 33025. This distinctive honor comes on the heels of the facility’s recent ribbon-cutting held on June 15, 2016. “We are proud of our LEED® Gold Certification,” says Mayor Wayne Messam. “Our public safety professionals are working in an environment that is sustainable and environmentally-conscience, allowing them to be as productive as possible for the benefit of residents and community.” The Miramar Police Headquarters achieved LEED® Gold certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in the following areas: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. LEED® is the foremost program for the design, construction and operation of green buildings. More than 79,600 commercial and institutional projects are currently participating in LEED®, comprising more than 5 billion-square-feet of construction space in all 50 states and more than 161 countries and territories. “The green building movement offers an unprecedented opportunity to respond to the most-important challenges of our time, including global climate change, dependence on non-sustainable and expensive sources of energy and threats to human health,” said Rick Fedrizzi, CEO and founding chair, USGBC. “The work of innovative building projects such as the City of Miramar’s Police Headquarters is
a fundamental driving force in the green building movement.” The acquisition of LEED® Gold certification has aligned the City of Miramar’s Police Headquarters with a select group of innovative buildings who have demonstrated their commitment to sustainability. This distinction also comes with eligibility for the USGBC South Florida Gala Verde Awards which are extended to outstanding LEED® projects, inspirational businesses, dedicated individuals and instrumental regional members who are LEEDing® the way to a more sustainablebuilt environment in our South Florida.
Miramar Mayor Delivers Optimistic State of the City Message BY JILL SHARPE
M
ayor Wayne Messam presented the State of the City address on October 15th to a packed theater and confirmed that Miramar is on the rise. In a series of highlighted main points, the Mayor focused on the business sector, showcasing the growing aviation hub that has developed in the city with companies such as Kellstrom Defense expanding their footprint to accommodate their growing needs. Technology and manufacturing companies such as 3Z Telecom have moved into the city and are part of what is helping to bring high paying jobs to the area. Miramar had the 12th fastest growing-economy of 240 cities with 100,000 to 300,000 people this past year, having moved up from 15th last year. Mayor Messam spoke of City-wide infrastructure improvements that include parks, storm water concerns and the opening of the Pembroke Road overpass to alleviate traffic. Developers such as Key Platinum Properties, LLC are buying homes in historic Miramar, refurbishing them, adding square footage and selling to families. The new police headquarters at Town Center was recently certified as LEED® Gold and the public safety complex for Historic Miramar gets underway with request for quotes to begin in September of this year. The Adult Day Care Center is in its final stages prior to opening to provide services for those in need. Fire Station 107 is in the bidding process and the Miramar Regional Park Amphitheater

and Shirley Branca Park Band Shell are under construction. Initiatives announced out of the Mayor’s office include the My Brother’s Keeper Program initiated by President Obama. Mayor Messam has partnered with four churches who have identified youth that will participate in the program: Christway Baptist Church, Fountain of New Life Church, Miramar United Methodist Church and St. Stephens Church. For those who wish to make improvements to their homes but may be lacking the necessary funds at this time, the Mayor spoke of the P.A.C.E. Program introduced by Mayor Messam and passed by Commission. This program allows homes and property owners to make improvements through approved innovative financing. Other accomplishments by the city include the launch of The City of Miramar Mobile App available on iTunes and Google Play. The application brings City hall and city services to mobile devices for the city’s residents and business users. “I am pleased to declare the State of the City as strong,” said Messam. “Miramar continues to be the destination of choice for business relocations and new residents driven by our healthy economy and excellent quality of life. Miramar has many opportunities ahead and together - the City Commission, City Staff and our residents will continue to move our City forward.”

T
he Miramar Fire Department was victorious one again in the battle between guns and hoses on September 6th at Texas Roadhouse as they defeated the Miramar Police Department in the 3rd Annual Rib Eating Challenge for charity. All in good fun, five challengers from each super hero department had to eat a rack of ribs. The Fire Department has now won the challenge two years in a row. The Police Department won the first year of the event. Ten percent of generated sales from the event went to the departments chosen charities, the Police Athletic League (PAL) and Relay for Life. “Although there were only five participants from each department, both departments had cheering squads and lots of families enjoyed the competition, said Jose Gregorish, Public Information Officer for the Fire Department. Family friendly activities added to the fun including a fire house bounce house and a balloon artist. Miramar Fire Department fire trucks, the Miramar Police Department SWAT team truck, K9’s and motorcycles were also present. Participating from the Fire Department were Daniel P. Slocum, Nathan Babrove, Luis A. Cordova, Reuben Gonzalez and Rolando G. Agrenot. Well, besides the training I received at Paul Mitchell and the technical part the fact that every single guest gets their own privacy with no fast pace, loud noise of a regular salon. Most importantly my full attention in every appointment and every service done at One on One by Liz. Also it is not about what I think the guest should get but it is more about what they want for that appointment and that is where communication plays an important part. I am trying to build a relationship with every single guest that sits in my chair which for myself as

Have no fear, though, cooking a Thanksgiving turkey is actually quite easy. We have been using this recipe at home for years with great success. Enjoy!
Ingredients: 1 large whole turkey (fresh or defrosted) ½ cup unsalted melted butter or olive oil Kosher Salt Fresh ground pepper One celery stalk (cut into thirds) One onion, chopped into 1-2 inch pieces Two apples, chopped into 1-2 inch pieces Herbs (sage, rosemary and/or thyme)
Instructions: Preheat oven to 325° F. Remove neck and giblets from turkey, then wash thoroughly, inside and out. Pat dry with paper towels. Place the turkey, breast side up, on a cooking rack, in a shallow roasting pan. Coat the exterior of the turkey with the olive oil or butter, then season with kosher salt and pepper. Loosely stuff the turkey with the celery, onion, apples and herbs.Place prepared turkey in center of oven. After 2 ½ hours, loosely cover the turkey with aluminum foil, to prevent the skin from burning. Continue to cook until the breast of the turkey reaches an internal temperature of 180° F. Remove from oven, and let stand for 10 to 15 minutes before carving. If things don’t go as planned, you can always call the Butterball turkey experts for advice at 1-800-BUTTERBALL (288-8372).

Everglades Legacy Chamber Singers Perform in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts

tudents from Everglades High School in Miramar make up the majority of the 21-member mixed choir which provides the choral beauty to Slow Burn Theatre Companies production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame playing through November 6th at the Broward Center. The award-
winning Everglades Legacy Chamber Singers spent a portion of their summer vacation in an intensive rehearsal for the production. The Hunchback of Notre Dame, a new musical based on the novel by Victor Hugo, with songs from the Disney film, is Slow Burn’s largest production in its history. The show is being performed in the Broward Center’s Amaturo Theater. “This is only the fourth production in the nation since the musical’s premiere and we are thrilled to have been entrusted with this epic and emotionally charged retelling of a classic love story, created by a composer and lyricist who each have been responsible for introducing new generations of fans to the American Musical Theater,” said Slow Burn Theatre Artist Director Patrick Fitzwater, who also serves as the production’s director and choreographer. Composer Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Aladdin) and lyricist Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell, Pippin) collaborated with book writer Peter Parnell, to create a lushly scored, powerful rendition of the timeless tale of love, acceptance and what it means to be a hero. Set in 15th century Paris, the musical tells the love story of the beautiful gypsy girl
Esmeralda, the scorned bell-ringer Quasimodo and the dashing Captain Phoebus. While this show is based on the animated Disney film and includes many of the same songs, the plot and themes follow more closely to the original and significantly darker novel. The cast features Bobby Cassell as Quasimodo, Shenise Nuñez as Esmeralda, Landon Summers as Phoebus, Matthew Korinko as Frollo and Trevor Whitaker as Clopin. Fitzwater has cast a top-notch ensemble of Dalia Aleman, Jinon Deeb, Cristina Flores, Steven Fuentes, Cameron Jordan, Josh Kolb, Rick Peña, Andrew Rodriguez-Triana, Stephanie Trull and Kyle Ashe Wilkinson. The creative team behind the production’s bold and dramatic theatrics is scenic designer Sean McClelland, costume designer Rick Peña, lighting designer Becky Montero, sound designer Rich Szczublewski and music director Caryl Fantel. Performances are Thursday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $47–$60. Ticketmaster is the only official ticketing service of the Broward Center, Parker Playhouse and affiliated venues. Buy tickets online at BrowardCenter.org or Ticketmaster.com; by phone at 954-462-0222; in person at Ticketmaster outlets or the Broward Center’s AutoNation Box Office.

Students in the high achieving/gifted classes created and read their own poetry as proud parents supported their efforts. Local partners including Publix, Horace Mann, the YMCA, Snow Cones, NATO Martial Arts and Gravity Gymnastics added to the success of the event. According to Principal Terri Telmas parents were most excited to receive free resources and manipulatives to enrich their child’s learning at home. “Our community really came together for the common cause of increasing student achievement,” said Telmas. “It takes a community to teach a child. We look forward to more family nights this year!”

The program shows the Glades Middle School cougars how a simple donation can drastically help a family in need. What is a cataract?
A cataract is an opaque spot on the lens of the eye that you can’t see through. The lens lies behind the iris and the pupil, and works like a camera lens. It focuses light onto the retina at the back of the eye, where an image is recorded. The lens also adjusts the eye’s focus, which allows you to see things clearly, both up close and far away. The lens is made of mostly water and protein. But as we age, some of the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens. This is a cataract. Over time, the cataract may grow larger and cloud more of the lens, making it harder to see. The haze can vary in size, density, and location, which means its effect on your vision will also vary. At first, many people experience an overall reduction in their vision. They may need more light to read by or may have difficulty reading street signs while driving. A cataract can also affect depth perception, which is particularly dangerous for the elderly, who are more prone to falling.

Common symptoms of cataracts include: ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸
Cloudy, fuzzy, foggy, or filmy vision Changes in the way you see colors Problems driving at night because headlights seem too bright Problems with glare from lamps or the sun Frequent changes in your eyeglass prescription Double vision Better near vision (temporarily in farsighted people only) Note: These symptoms also can be signs of other eye problems
What causes cataracts?
▸▸ Free radicals - natural by products of metabolism - are highly reactive chemicals that cause oxidation, which in turn causes aging. ▸▸ Toxins, pharmaceutical drugs, and smoking ▸▸ Diabetes (high levels of sugar in the blood contribute to cataract formation, so it’s not surprising that diabetics are 3-4 times more likely to have cataracts) ▸▸ The protein in the lens changes from the wear and tear it takes over the years, and hardens and loses its ability to focus.

EYE CARE
ataracts are the leading cause of decreased vision in adults older than 65. It is the most common surgical procedure for elderly people. You can still get an “age-related” cataract when you are in your 40s or 50s, although most likely it will be small and not rob you of your vision. Only 15 percent of people are affected with cataracts by age 55, but this figure jumps to 50 percent by age 75, and 90 percent by age 85. It is important to note, however, that cataracts worsen over time … so it’s never too late-or early-to try to prevent them and/or treat them.
Cataracts can only be treated surgically. This procedure would be performed by an Ophthalmologist, and is often an outpatient procedure. The surgery often involves placement of intraocular lens (IOL), which is used to replace the eyes natural lens, which is removed in the cataract surgery. Glasses may be required for far/near correction following the procedure, depending on the type IOL used and the surgical outcome. The pre- and post-surgical care of the cataract patient may be and often is provided by an Optometrist. Dr. Michael Chesen can assist patients in finding the appropriate Ophthalmologist for their care and can be reached at 954-437-9733. The office is located at 2909 Dykes Rd., in the Fountains of Miramar Shopping Plaza.

SECTION HEAD LEGALLY SPEAKING
How to Avoid the Next Flood of Foreclosures BY OMAR J. ARCIA, ESQ. FORECLOSURE DEFENSE, BANKRUPTCY PROTECTION AND CONSUMER ADVOCACY ATTORNEY
M
illions of Americans will soon see monthly bills shoot up on their home equity lines of credit (HELOC) taken out during the housing boom from 2005-2008, because they will convert from interest-only (no principal) to principal and interest payments at the loan’s ten year mark. HELOCS are a type of second mortgage that homeowners used to tap into the equity built up in their home. A recent analysis by Realty Trac shows that 3.3 million homes in the U.S. carry HELOCS from the 2005-08 era, and that 56% of these homes are “seriously underwater.” When these HELOCS change from interest-only to principal and interest, the monthly payments will more than double. This change will force many homeowners to default on their HELOC payments, which will lead to foreclosure of their homes. However, there are several ways to avoid this next flood of foreclosures, and to save your home. First, you should have a qualified real estate attorney, like the attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm, closely review your HELOC for any deficiencies which prevent the lender from enforcing its terms through a foreclosure proceeding. For example, was the HELOC security agreement signed by BOTH husband and wife, and was it properly recorded in the county where the property is located?

®
Second, if the HELOC already “matured,” and more than five years have passed without making payment, Florida law will permit you to eliminate that lien from your property through a quiet title action. This means you can wipe out the loan in its entirety due to your lender “sleeping” on their rights. Third, if you are unable to pay the increased monthly payment on your HELOC, you may be eligible to negotiate a significant reduction in the amount you owe your lender. Especially for homeowners who owe more than your home is worth, HELOC companies will not likely to recover the amount they are owed in a foreclosure. These companies prefer to negotiate a reduced payoff balance of the HELOC with the homeowner of anywhere between 5-30% of the amount actually owed. The negotiated amount is usually repaid in a one to five year time frame. We have settled dozens of these HELOC settlements on behalf of our clients, and have significant experience and established credibility in negotiating with HELOC collection companies. Lastly, if you owe more on your first mortgage than your home is worth, you will be able to completely wipe out your HELOC and the lien against your home by filing a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. In that bankruptcy proceeding, you will also be able to eliminate credit card debt, medical debt, reduce or eliminate IRS debt, and even modify your first mortgage through an innovative new program available in South Florida Bankruptcy Courts. Contact the Arcia Law Firm at 954-437-9066 to schedule your free office consultation with attorney Omar Arcia, who will personally review your case. You may also visit www. arcialawfirm.com for more information about the Firm, our staff and credentials, detailed articles, informative videos & testimonials, and to make your appointment online.

Giving Thanks in 2016
Avoiding Probate: Debunking Common Myths
BY WAYNE MESSAM, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF MIRAMAR
BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
ovember is the time of year we give thanks for our many blessings throughout the year and the City of Miramar has many reasons for us to give thanks. Just a few years ago, our nation was in the midst of a recession and Miramar was no exception. Foreclosures and many hardships hit some of our friends and neighbors. Today the economic outlook is bright for our city. For the third year in a row, property values are up by 8% and Miramar is rated as the 13th fastest growing economy in the nation by WalletHub.com. In addition, Miramar continues to attract companies to our city that are providing high paying jobs - JL Audio and Ecolab are poised to add over 100 jobs paying an average of $65,000 per year. There is more work to be done on the economic front but Miramar is on the rise and we are much better today than we were just three years ago. Another reason for us to be thankful this year is the successful completion of our LEED Silver Certified Police Headquarters. This facility better equips our police department in keeping our community safe. Our city’s most recent accomplishment, for which we give thanks, is the opening of the Pembroke Road Overpass which provides much anticipated relief to the Miramar Parkway I-75 corridor. Many residents have already mentioned they notice a difference and they enjoy taking the Pembroke Road Overpass as an alternate route. So please pardon our dust as we complete the improvements to the Miramar Parkway I-75 overpass.
ou likely know that probate administration is expensive, time consuming and public. Yet, there are commonly held misconceptions surrounding this topic which lead many to make uniformed decisions resulting in the need to have an estate probated. While the best way to avoid probate is to speak with an experienced estate planning attorney, let’s take a look at just a few probate and estate planning myths: I’ll leave my home to my children through a will to avoid probate. This is the most common of all the estate planning myths! The truth is that inherited property cannot be retitled, or sold, without the participation and approval of the probate court, which requires probate administration for the deceased. Adding my adult child to my deed is a great way to avoid probate. While your property will indeed pass without probate after you die, there is much risk when adding someone to your deed. The child’s interest in the home is not shielded from creditors via Homestead protection, if it is not their primary residence. A fractional interest in the property owned by a person who does not reside there will not qualify for Homestead tax benefits, so your property taxes will increase. What if your child has creditors or is involved in a lawsuit? Or what if he or she divorces? Finally, as your child is listed as an owner, they must participate and sign off on any decision to sell or refinance the property. I like to save money. Can I obtain the necessary forms and submit them to the probate court myself without the expense of an attorney? In Florida almost all probate cases require an attorney. There is a narrow exception for very small estates where the amount of assets are only sufficient to pay for the funeral and final expenses of the decedent. My cousin’s estate was settled in just a few months in Michigan, so I’m expecting the same experience in south Florida. Most simple estates can be settled within a year. But keep in mind that because of staffing shortages and backlogs in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, the process can take as long as 18 months. More complex estates, taxable estates, or estates with disputes among family members, may take several years to settle. I created a revocable living trust so I am not concerned about probate. A revocable living trust can help you avoid probate but only if your trust is fully funded. With some important exceptions, all of your real property, personal property and business interests should be transferred into your trust while you are alive. If your trust is not properly funded, many assets may still have to go through a probate after your death before reaching your trust and its beneficiaries, causing delay, additional cost and avoidable complexity. Estate planning is a deliberate, premeditated act of love. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

Now, as we all prepare for the official day of Thanksgiving, we are all looking forward to spending time with family and preparing for the holiday season. I encourage all residents to keep those who may be facing difficult times in our prayers. There are many opportunities to serve at a food pantry, houses of worship and other community efforts to feed the homeless, jobless and sick. I also would like to take this time to thank each of you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your mayor. If I can ever be of assistance, I am only a phone call or email away. Miramar is a wonderful city and together, there is nothing our city can’t do. We have so much to be proud of and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store.
