The True Meaning of the Holiday Spirit
I
t is hard to believe , but winter is at our door .
While we generally do not get the snowflakes or the frosty winter temperatures, we do get the holiday season. The upcoming holidays may have different meanings to many of our readers due to our diverse cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs, but for all of us this should be a time to reflect on the year gone by. It’s the season to gauge our own conduct. Have we reached out to our neighbors to lend a helping hand to those in need? Have we made enough time to truly spend with our children, our parents, our family and our friends? This is the time to mend minor disagreements, to forgive and forget. This is also the time to think of those less fortunate than ourselves. We should teach our children to share our good fortune with our loved ones, as well as those in need. There are families right here in our communities who need our assistance. Help make the season brighter for them by giving generously. Consider giving your children gifts they will cherish for a lifetime; the gift of love and the gift of giving. The holidays are the perfect time to teach your children to be thankful for what they have and to help others. For that is truly what the holidays are about.

Miramar Residents Get Active at 3K, Health Fair and Family Fun Day BY JILL SHARPE
T
he day after Halloween may be a time when you look back
and feel a tinge of guilt over all the candy you ate the night before. Residents of Miramar found a great way to work off those trick or treating treats with the Second Annual Free Health Fair and Family Fun Day on November 1st at the Miramar Cultural Center. Hosted by City Commissioner Wayne Messam, Memorial Hospital Miramar, and Sanofi Pharmaceuticals, the event was geared towards getting residents informed and active. Commissioner Messam was ecstatic about the event and the outstanding turnout. “I created this event to introduce a healthy lifestyle to Miramar. The 3K is enough for experienced runners to break a sweat but first timers can walk and still enjoy it,” said Messam. “Miramar has grown to be such an active community. We’re no longer a bedroom community. The average age here is in the 30s, and families want healthy things to do. As a former professional athlete and an elected official, I want to help people be active and healthy.” The day began with the Family 3K Run/Walk that started at the nearby Miramar Town Center and looped back to the Cultural Center. After working up a sweat at the 3K, participants took advantage of fitness, Zumba, yoga, dance, karate, and cycling demonstrations at the Health Fair. Black Girls RUN!, an organization that promotes healthy living in the African-American community, co-sponsored the 3K. “We want to help fight any disease that’s prominent in the African-American community, whether it’s diabetes, cancer, or hypertension,” said Sonya Hickman of Black Girls RUN!, “We have a program that gets people to walk before they run, but ultimately takes ladies from their couch to running a 5K in 12 weeks. We all have the same goal in mind: to get healthy.” One highlight of the Health Fair was the “Teddy Bear Clinic” provided by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital where children could pretend to be doctors and

take care of their teddy bear “patients” in a typical hospital experience. “We’re all about improving the health and wellness of the communities we serve, whether it’s through providing health screenings or activities for children,” said Jennifer Belyeu, Community Relations Manager for the Memorial Healthcare System. “Our ‘Teddy Bear Clinic’ is here to ease any fears children may have of coming to the doctor.” Heidi Laracuente of Miramar and her son were enjoying all that the fair had to offer. “This is a great space here, everything at the fair is open and there’s lots of places for kids to play. We really enjoyed the “Teddy Bear Clinic” and all the information on swimming lessons.” Younger attendees also found a variety of fun activities in the “Kids Corner” with a rock climbing wall, face painting, and a football toss game courtesy of the Miami Dolphins. Inside the Cultural Center, vendors were set up to educate residents about health issues like heart disease, diabetes, and childhood obesity. Medical professionals were on hand to provide blood pressure and bone density checks, flu shots, body mass index analyses, and cholesterol screenings. Joe Dimaggio Children’s Hospital parked their Children’s Mobile Health Center outside the center for immunizations and school physicals. Representatives from the Miramar Fire Department were on hand to educate people about drowning prevention, and encourage everyone to follow the department’s social media accounts on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/MiramarFD and on Twitter at @ MiramarFD for safety updates before the holiday season. Helping others during the holidays was also on the mind of the City of Miramar’s Department of Social Services as they distributed turkeys to local families in need. The department is asking Miramar residents to get involved with the Adopt-a-Family program where people can donate food and toys to brighten the holidays for the less fortunate. To get involved, please contact the department at 954-889-2705.

Miramar Plays An Important Role in Mapping Jamaica’s Diaspora Project BY JILL SHARPE
C
ity of M iramar elected officials hosted
a meeting with Consul General of Jamaica, the Honorable Franz Hall and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, the Honorable Arnaldo Brown on Monday, October 27th. The meeting was held to discuss the Mapping Jamaica’s Diaspora Project, geared towards gathering demographic data to help identify skills abroad that can be harnessed for Jamaica’s national development. In partnership with the International Organization for Migration and launched in the Northeast, the project is expanding to Southeast cities. Because of its large Jamaican residency, Miramar was chosen as an ideal city to take part in this endeavor. Participants of Jamaican heritage by birth, descent, marriage, naturalization or registration are asked to take a survey that will be kept in a database and used to inform the government of Jamaica on skills, experiences and interests of those in the Diaspora that can support development in Jamaica. Miramar Mayor Lori Moseley said she was honored to meet with the Jamaican Consulate regarding this important project. “It never fails to amaze me that the issues we deal with on a local level are the same ones dealt with nationally and around the word,” said Mayor Moseley. For additional information on the project, visit www.mapjadiaspora.iom.int

Jencare Skin Farm & Day Spa Helps Clients De-stress and Re-invigorate for the Holidays By Debby Teich
hours in a world-class spa that is influenced by Caribbean and European techniques.
Why is the day spa a great holiday gift? We believe that there is no better gift than the gift of wellness. Self-care is the difference between being busy and being truly productive in our everyday lives, yet we get so caught up in our daily routines that we seldom nurture ourselves with the self-care needed. Jencare encourages your productivity, health, and wellness through spa therapy.
When did you open? We have been in South Florida since 1997. We opened our location in the Miramar Town Center four years ago.
Why attracted you to South Florida?
We were attracted to this area, because it is our community and we have experienced remarkable growth within the last seven years. We decided that a contemporary spa with Caribbean and European flavor was much needed.

Library hosted an “Author’s Forum” for library patrons and the community at large. The Forum brought together local authors in a panel discussion of their writing experiences. The event was held in celebration of November’s National Novel Writing Month. National Novel Writing Month is a country wide initiative that encourages people to write by coming together in groups, or chapters, to collectively write a 50,000 word novel. “Our idea was to support aspiring writers by letting them hear from published authors about the challenges and rewards of writing and publishing books,” said Kathleen Dodge, Library Specialist. “However, a large part of the audience were people who just love to read and were interested in hearing about how an author writes a book.” The panel of authors were a mix of fiction and non-fiction writers whose works cover health, science fiction, romance, political thrillers and social issues. The featured authors were Dr. Nivia Binett-Carroll, Jeff Carroll, Victoria Pinder, Vincent Sachar and Pastor Etta B. Harbin. Miramar Librarian, Sheena Sewell hosted the discussion by presenting a series of questions to the authors. Questions covered topics such as developing your characters, keeping your work moving along, researching, revising and rewriting your work and more. The “Author’s Forum” was attended by about 65 people who enthusiastically had their own questions for the authors. The panel discussion was followed by an author meet and greet and book signing session.

Sunset Lakes Elementary Inducts 20 Students Into the National Elementary Honor Society By Jill Sharpe
O
n Wednesday, O ctober 29 th S unset L akes E lementary
inducted twenty students into their chapter of the National Elementary Honor Society. The twenty students were chosen based upon criteria that included, but wasn’t limited to, academic achievement, community service, leadership and demonstration of responsibility.
The induction ceremony was hosted by Principal, Marc Charpentier and Intern Principal Sylvia Correa as well as the chapter advisors Mrs. Aileen Soto and Ms. Beth Register. The four pillars were represented by Philip Bullock, Principal at Coral Cove Elementary who spoke about Responsibility; Patricia Good, Chair, School Board of Broward County who spoke about Service; Krista Herrera, Principal at Glades Middle School who spoke about Scholarship and Robin Bartleman, Member at Large, School Board of Broward County who spoke of Leadership. Register explained that NEHS is more than just an honor roll for the school; it is designed to provide age-appropriate experiences and relevant lessons for its members. NEHS chapter activities involve members in service to their school and community and the leadership development activities that introduce them to new skills and values. “Members maintain and extend the qualities that earned them this selection,” said Register. “NEHS membership influences the development of the whole child and brings both an honor and a commitment to excellence to each student.” Soto said the National Elementary Honor Society reinforces the idea that it takes more than good grades to be a top student.” “This program encourages students to be of service to their peers and community while encouraging others to join them in making a difference,” she said. Students like Imani Bodet, a 2015 inductee, understand the value and commitment of the program. “I wanted to join NEHS so that I could be involved in more service activities which help others live better lives,” she said.

Career Day and a Successful 10-Year Anniversary at Glades Middle School BY JILL SHARPE
O
n O ctober 29 th , G lades M iddle School celebrated its 2 nd Annual Career Day with great success. Over 90 participants visited the school and spoke to the students about their different professions, careers and companies. “We had bankers, veterinarians, doctors and even the Mayor of Miramar come out to give their time to speak about their careers and the hard work it takes
in school to accomplish a great career,” said Intern Principal Dorys Palacio. “Students had the opportunity to correlate what they are doing in their classrooms to what the presenters do in their career.” Career Day was followed by a 10 year celebration. There was an opening of a time capsule, live band and festivities throughout the day for the teachers, staff and students in honor of the school’s 10 year anniversary.

December 2014 | Our City Miramar
t has been slightly over four years since South
Florida homeowners gained the upper hand in the once “red hot” real estate market when choosing to sell. Fueling this cycle were major institutional investors who entered the market. They vied for and “gobbled” up a vast majority of the affordable real estate with cash purchases, causing multiple offer scenarios and increasing the annual appreciation rate of homes to within double digits. This made it increasingly challenging for the average home buyer with a minimum down payment to secure the American dream of homeownership at near bargain prices. These institutional investors that once found South Florida real estate vastly attractive have slowly disappeared, exiting the area within the preceding months. I have been observing the gradual slowing of the market for the past eight plus months. During this interval, the absorption rate of the local housing inventory reflected a trend towards a balanced real estate market. Simultaneously, the local media unremittingly touted the progression as being a seller’s market; therefore, leading the general public to believe that this was truly the case. I am here to tell you differently! The housing market has since shifted and is now balanced, with neither buyers nor sellers having the upper hand in all but a few cases. Are homes still selling? Of course they are! Homes, varying by location and priced correctly at fair market value from the onset, are still receiving multiple offers from the “pent up” demand of traditional buyers that were not priced out of the market during the period of hefty price increases. Homes for sale that are overpriced are “sitting” on the market for longer periods of time and not selling until the owners reduce the price to the level that the market can bear. What is interesting to note is that while the housing market was trending upward, a staggering number of homeowners were, and still are, going through the seemingly never ending process of foreclosure. With the housing inventory steadily increasing along with gently diminishing demand, it will only be a matter of time before buyers will have the marginal advantage, albeit just slightly. How much time you ask? No one really knows since cycles generally don’t really have a start or a stop. There are no magic indicators that can point us to the beginning or end of a cycle. This specific editorial emerged as a result of a recent trend I have been observing involving a considerable amount of homeowners who aspire to market their homes for sale with unrealistic expectations in reference to time it takes, and, the pricing that will get the property sold. My advice is to be rational in your decision-making process, since the window of opportunity for your highest net profit after the sale is being reduced as time keeps wandering by. Treatment for Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) and Eye Strain By Michael Chesen, OD
T
he American O ptometric A ssociation (AOA)
reports that over 7 out of 10 of the Americans that work each day from a computer monitor (about 143 million people) suffer from computer vision syndrome (CVS) or eye strain. Prolonged computer use can result in eye stress and effect typical vision processes in kids and adults. If you are working at a computer longer than 2 hours each day, it is likely that you will suffer symptoms of computer vision syndrome.
Signs of CVS
Signs of Computer Vision Syndrome include vision difficulties such as dry eyes, blurred vision, inability to focus or double vision and pain such as headaches, back aches and heavy eyes. If you are experiencing a number of these symptoms, you may be suffering from Computer Vision Syndrome.

Eye fatigue from prolonged computer use is caused by the necessity for our visual processing pathways to adapt to processing text on a computer screen in a different way than they do for letters in print. While our eyes are used to focusing on printed material that contains solid black characters with sharp edges, they are less familiar with characters on a digital screen that lack the same degree of contrast and sharpness. Words on a screen are created by combinations of tiny dots of light (pixels), which are most luminous at the center and diminish in intensity toward the edges. Therefore it is harder for our eyes to focus on these images. Instead, our eyes reduce focus to the ‘’resting point of accommodation’’ or RPA. Our eyes involuntarily adjust to the RPA and then have to make a great effort to regain focus on the text. The continuous strain on the muscles of the eyes to focus results in the fatigue and eye strain that is sometimes present during and after use of a computer or digital device. CVS isn’t a matter of concern just for those who spend a lot of time on computers. Other electronic gadgets such as smart phones or tablets can cause similar conditions and in some cases even worse. Since mobile screens are often small, in addition to pixilated, the user often strains even more to focus on images.
Treatment for Computer Vision Syndrome and Eye Strain
If you think that you might be at risk for CVS, you should make an appointment with an eye care professional sooner than later. At a computer vision exam, your eye care professional will perform tests to detect any particular vision problems that might worsen symptoms of computer eye strain. Depending on the results of these tests, your optometrist may prescribe prescription computer eyeglasses to reduce discomfort at your screen. An anti-reflective coating is highly recommended for computer glasses. An antireflective coating lessens glare that may interfere with your ability to focus on images on your screen.
Ergonomics for Computer Vision Syndrome
Ergonomics, or changing your work environment to reduce strains in vision or posture, can help relieve some of the discomfort of computer vision syndrome. Proper lighting and frequent breaks will cause some relief. However, since ergonomics alone cannot resolve a visual problem, using ophthalmic computer eyeglasses is also necessary. If you think you are suffering from CVS or at risk of getting it, contact Dr. Chesen at his Miramar optometric office by calling 954-437-9733.

erves are small string - like structures that
provide sensation and/or give the signal to muscles to move. Some nerves may be susceptible to injury because of their location in the foot or ankle. The most commonly injured nerves are on the ball of the foot, located at the base of the second, third and fourth toes. These nerves provide sensation only to the middle three toes and may be compressed by a ligament that runs over it. Here is a look at the symptoms, causes and treatment options for pinched nerves in the foot. Symptoms: ▸▸ Pain on the ball of the foot. ▸▸ Numbness, burning, shooting or tingling sensation in the toes. Some or all of these symptoms may be present. ▸▸ Cramping in the toes. ▸▸ Aggravated by running, aerobics or activities that put stress on the ball of the foot. ▸▸ Pain may be lessened by taking the shoe off and rubbing the foot. ▸▸ Driving may aggravate the ball of the foot. Causes: ▸▸ Compression of the nerves against a tight ligament. ▸▸ Arthritis or bone spurs from the adjacent joints. ▸▸ Soft tissue cysts causing nerve compression. ▸▸ Trauma to the ball of the foot. ▸▸ Nerve may become irritated from tight shoes or sports that put stress on the ball of the foot, especially tennis and running. The goal of treatment is to reduce the inflammation around the nerve and prevent further trauma to it. Treatment options include: ▸▸ Anti-inflammatories may be used to lessen inflammation; oral medication or cortisone injections may be beneficial. ▸▸ Changing to wider shoes without a heel. ▸▸ Changing activities temporarily from weight bearing exercises to biking and swimming. ▸▸ Physical therapy may be of benefit in reducing inflammation. ▸▸ Metatarsal pads. ▸▸ Orthotics to correct faulty biomechanics. They can be used in small heels and all sports shoes. ▸▸ Localized injections into the nerve to stop the nerve from functioning. Removing the nerve surgically may be necessary if conservative treatment fails. This is an outpatient procedure. A local or twilight anesthesia is used. The procedure takes approximately 15 minutes. One or two days off of work is needed. A surgical shoe is worn for four to five days and then a sneaker may be used. Postoperative pain is minimal. The patient progresses to regular shoes over a two to four week period. Certain activities such as biking and swimming can be done in a week; sports may take three to eight weeks to resume. Robert Sheinberg, DPM, is a Board Certified Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Fellow American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, Diplomat American Board of Podiatric Surgery. He is a partner in Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. Homeowners Must Beware of Foreclosure Rescue & Short Sale Scams By Omar J. Arcia Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Attorney
S
outh Florida
homeowners and consumers in foreclosure or at risk of foreclosure are inundated with commercials, mailers, phone calls and even personal visits from companies claiming they can save their home. These companies are usually unlicensed and inexperienced, looking for a quick profit at the expense of the consumer. Here are some of the foreclosure rescue scams against which all homeowners must beware: ▸▸ Out of state and local companies guarantee they can cancel the foreclosure process, and save your home. They make these promises in official looking documents that appear issued by the government or by the lender. At the bottom of the mailer is usually a tiny disclaimer that reveals the company is not tied to any federal agency or bank. Since these companies are non-attorneys, or attorneys NOT licensed to practice in the State of Florida, they cannot represent you in court, and you will lose your home. They will also charge you an upfront fee to assist you with a loan modification, which is illegal under Florida law, punishable by civil and criminal penalties. ▸▸ Many realtors have also jumped on the foreclosure rescue bandwagon, and are pushing short sales which are not in the best interests of many South Florida homeowners. I have witnessed realtors in court falsely posing as homeowners or as “attorneys” before a judge in order to obtain foreclosure sale cancelations. This is a dangerous game for both realtor and homeowner. We represent many clients whose realtors have even forged homeowners’ signatures on official court documents and filed last minute bankruptcy petitions to stop foreclosure sales without permission from the homeowner. This process is also illegal and is being aggressively investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice. ▸▸ One final scam is the so-called “land trust” transfer. The way this unethical scam works is a company will partner with an unethical law firm or attorney to transfer your home’s title to a land trust; a new entity over which you have zero control. Then they usually file a court action by the land trust to remove the mortgage lien from the property. This process is not a legitimate means of saving your home, and it will fail. You will lose your money and your home if you fall for this scam. If you have already fallen prey to any of these scams, demand your money back immediately and go to the appropriate authorities if they refuse to refund your money. There is only one way for homeowners to avoid these unethical and illegal scams -- hire a reputable and knowledgeable law firm, like the Arcia Law Firm, with nearly 20 years of experience, to represent your interests and obtain the best possible outcome, through aggressive foreclosure defense, loan modification, short sale or bankruptcy. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in the instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy during your visit to discuss your case in detail with Omar Arcia. You may contact the Arcia Law Firm at 954-437-9066 to schedule your free consultation. You may also visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information about the Firm, our staff and credentials, detailed articles, informative videos, and to make your appointment online.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
pet of the month
“Pickle”
Give To Others This Holiday Season Lori C. Moseley, Mayor
G
reetings! A s we prepare for this holiday
season, I’d like to encourage you to give the gift of giving. I was born and raised in New York. In fact, most of my family still reside there. When life brought me to Florida, I missed my family terribly; particularly around the holidays. I didn’t really know how I would or if I could continue the traditions we shared together. Well, over the years I’ve extended my relationships and now I have what I consider my Florida family. So during the holidays when I’m unable to go back to New York, I call my Florida family over and share in the new traditions we’ve made together. So, this holiday season call a friend or two over for dinner. You never know who’s missing their family and would be happy to spend the season with yours.
Pickle is a six-year-old Shitzo-poodle mix. His favorite person is his mom Diana and his grandma. He loves to be petted and his sister Lily is his favorite toy. Pickle is afraid of thunderstorms and does not like when it rains. He likes to hide things in his mouth. He was last seen looking for a place to hide because it started to rain. In addition there are a number of organizations in your communities that, with your help, can feed and provide toys to disadvantaged families. Here are a few agencies you may contact to learn more.
Sponsored By:
▸▸ The Pantry of Broward, Inc. ▸▸ Toys for Tots ▸▸ Kiwanis Club ▸▸ Rotary Club ▸▸ Broward County Food Emergency Pantries ▸▸ Million Meals Committee You may also contact your City’s social services department for additional agencies and/or how you can give back in your neighborhoods. Don’t forget, you can even start your own give back program and encourage your children to get involved. You’ll not only help hundreds of families this holiday season, your heart will overflow with joy for doing so. Giving doesn’t have to cost much. There are so many different ways that you can. How will you give this holiday season? What new traditions will you start? Thank you for allowing me to come into your homes through this publication. From my family and I to yours, we wish you a very safe, fulfilling and joyous season of giving. Sincerely, Mayor Lori C. Moseley
