Happy Mother’s Day!

Y

ou ’ ve probably heard the expression “April

showers bring May flowers.” Well, the timing couldn’t be better because flowers are a beautiful way to show Mom how much you love and appreciate her. Let’s all take a little pause and honor our mothers, and the mothers of our children, for all they do. They work hard to care for us, look after us, and pamper us every single day. Let’s set aside one day and pamper them for a change! May also signifies that summer is just around the corner. Before we know it, school will be done, the afterschool activities will be over, and the pressures of everyday life will be eased just a little. This is the time to relax and enjoy our time together…because August will be here in a blink of an eye.

“True Blue” Weekend Brings Alumni of Two Jamaican High Schools Together Once Again By Jill Sharpe

N

early 1,500 Jamaican Nationals recently participated in the 10th anniversary of “True Blue” weekend, a soccer extravaganza celebrating the legacy of a beloved coach and friend. The three day weekend event in Miramar, is hosted each year by the St. George’s College Old Boys Association along with the Jamaica College Old Boys Association. The event is held in memory of Dennis Ziadie, who coached both Jamaican high schools to Manning Cup victories before losing his life in a car crash in Mexico at the 1986 World Cup. It began as a one-day Zaidie Cup soccer match, but 26 years later it has grown in to a full weekend of events. The True Blue Alumni Soccer tournament, the Girls Alumni Penalty Kick-off and the Zaide Cup match between Jamaican College & St. Georges were as competitive as ever this year, according to Xavier Murphy, president of JCOBAFL. This year, the weekend included a True Blue Party with DJ Squeeze, followed

10

by the Soccer Fest a day later at Vizcaya Park. There were two matches, featuring alumni over and under 35 years old, a 6 v 6 tournament and a penalty shoot-out by the women. An awards brunch was held on the final day of the weekend. Rudy Zameka, President of the St. George’s College of Old Boys Association, said many of the older players learned directly from Coach Ziadie. “A lot of these players hold him dear in their hearts,” Zameka said. Organizers say True Blue which is named for the varied blue colors of both schools, was once again an ideal opportunity for classmates from around the country and the globe, to reunite. The event always draws a big crowd because it is also a reunion and a way for us to hang and get together,” said Kameka. The event also drew people with no connection to the coach or even one of the schools. “It’s always a great family outing offering some great soccer and a piece of Jamaican culture,” said Kameka.

Writing Novels Fulfills Lifetime Dream for Miramar Resident By Jill Sharpe

A

t age 65, when most people are

pondering retirement, Miramar resident Vincent Sachar, decided to start a new career as a novelist. Although he hasn’t quit his day job as Managing Director of a Global Consulting Firm, Sachar, an attorney by profession, finally decided to do something he’s wanted to do his whole life, become a published author. His first novel, entitled “The Nowhere Man” has been published by Amazon and is available in paperback and eBook (Kindle) formats. A sequel novel, “Nowhere Out”, is currently in process to be published. “The Nowhere Man” is about a decorated U.S. Navy SEAL who starts out an American hero and ends up a serial killer. It tells the story of U.S. Lieutenant Commander Kent Taylor who is injured and ends up incarcerated in a foreign prison camp. Taylor escapes and makes it back to the United States where he learns that during his absence, his pregnant wife, his young son and his wife’s parents have all died in what appears to be an accidental fire. Tormented by guilt that he was not there to save his family members and overwhelmed by grief, Taylor begins investigating what occurred on that tragic night. He discovers that the fire was not an accident and that his loved ones were in fact murdered as part of a cover-up that includes people in power in the very govern-

ment for which he had risked his life. Taylor takes it upon himself to avenge their deaths by killing those he believes are responsible. Utilizing the same skills of stealth he mastered as a Navy Seal, Taylor is dubbed “The Ghost Assassin” by the FBI. Customer reviews on Amazon call the novel “a great read that will take you on a roller coaster of emotions”. Sachar’s characters are described as “rich and colorful” and his writing is referred to as “captivating”. Sachar, who has no military or law enforcement background to draw upon nonetheless said writing a story about the inner turmoil and challenges a man faces has simply always been inside of him. “I wanted to write a story that would make readers really feel something,” Sachar said. His favorite quote, by Mark Twain is “The two most important days of your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” Sachar said the day he started writing was the day he found out why. It is not surprising, therefore, that Sachar calls his author website, www.vincentsachar.com, “Yborn creations”. “I believe that we all have some secret longings within us that represent something that we desire to do. Whether it is something artistic or related to some other field, it is something that when unearthed brings us great joy and satisfaction,” Sachar said. “I have definitely found that joy.”

value on customer service and we respect our patients time. We make a point of not overbooking appointments and our staff works together to minimize wait time as much as possible. No patient ever waits more than 10 or 15 minutes to be seen. We also utilize the latest technology in the industry to give our patients the very best smiles in the shortest treatment time. In addition to the more well known Invisilign, we offer advanced technologies such as “SureSmile®”, which reduces treatment time by a third and Incognito hidden braces. These treatments are only available at 5-10 percent of orthodontic offices nationwide. Technologies such as these and the new 3D I-CAT scan, a first in Broward County, makes Naidu the premier choice for orthodontic treatment.

The iCAT scanner produces high-resolution images and detailed 3-D views of the bones, teeth, nerves, sinuses, and structure of the head, face, neck and jaw. With a typical scan time of 8.5 seconds, and the ability to produce high-definition images in less than one minute, the iCAT imaging system emits 90% less radiation than traditional X-ray methods.

Who is your typical patient? There really is no typical patient as new

treatment techniques provide significant benefits for patients of all ages including 6 or 7 year olds, who may benefit from early limited treatment even before the permanent teeth come in, to adults who account for more than 30 percent of our patients.

Newer techniques and materials available at our office allow expanded intervals between orthodontic appointments to make the treatment more convenient than ever for all our patients.

What can patients expect when they visit your office? Describe the office environment. We want our patients to feel part of the family

and we want their experience here to be enjoyable at our two locations. Our staff is friendly and inviting and so is our decor which is inspired by Dr. Naidu’s longtime passion for basketball and love of the Miami Heat. When patients look up, there are televisions over every chair and there is even aromatherapy available.

Anything else you would like readers to know? With a strong belief

that education is the key to a brighter tomorrow, we are a proud sponsor of local schools, charities, sports teams and fairs. Along with oral hygiene education, our orthodontic team participates in career days, fundraisers and charitable events to benefit many non-profit organizations in our own community.

our families to know that it is important that children grow comfortable visiting the dentist. That is why we recommend that parents bring in their kids by age 1. We do not take radiographs on children younger than 3 unless needed. The staff will perform a cleaning and fluoride will be applied to the teeth. Early visits are meant to properly educate parents and children on correct tooth brushing techniques and how to establish positive nutritional habits including how to avoid baby bottle decay.

Your office is equipped with the latest technology, tell me about that. Children 3 years of age and

above receive a limited number of x-rays (normally 2-4) to help determine the presence of any cavities between the teeth that are not readily visible when the dentist examines your child’s teeth. Our office is equipped with hand-held x-ray units and digital films that emit a quarter of the radiation of older, conventional x-ray units. Older children (8 and above) receive an additional x-ray known as a panoramic film. This film gives our dentists an overall picture of all your child’s teeth, sinuses, jaw bones, and other hard and soft tissues of his/her head and neck.

Do you treat children with special needs? Yes, we most certainly do. Children with special needs may experience more dental problems due to sensitivities around the mouth, diet, and difficulty with brushing. With patience, perseverance and determination many of these challenges can be overcome. Specialists in our office have several years of additional training in the care and management of special needs patients and in understanding the psychology of child behavior which puts us in a unique position to care for these patients. How is your practice different from other dental practices? We

started our practice with the goal of being accessible to the community we serve. Our approach is gentle, kind, and compassionate. Parents are encouraged to be with their child throughout all appointments and we offer different treatment approaches tailored to the individual needs of your child. We are a full-service pediatric dental office, offering treatment with nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”), oral sedation (done in-office for fearful or apprehensive patients), and hospital dentistry (performed at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital). Moreover, we are open six days a week, offering patients evening, morning, and Saturday appointments. We are also one of the few pediatric dental offices in Pembroke Pines to accept most dental insurances including PPO, HMO and Florida Kid Care.

Miramar Elementary Students Get In Touch With Nature By Jill Sharpe

S

tudents at M iramar E lementary often ask to forgo recess as

The school was able to start the garden with funding they received through a “Gardening for Grades” grant. “This year, the grant was extended which allowed us to expand the garden,” said DeLucia. “We added two raised bed gardens and a couple of container gardens.” Other classes in the school have been involved in the project as well. Jill Colon’s first grade class, Deidrea Degni’s second grade class and the Head Start class have all been involved. “Cafeteria Manager Marsha St. Pierre is great about showing the students how to clean, cut and cook the different herbs and vegetables that we harvest from our garden,” DeLucia said. Last year the students enjoyed pizza with basil and tomatoes from the garden. This year they enjoyed a fresh salad filled with veggies and herbs. “We are looking forward to a second harvest of collards, kale and beet tops,” said DeLucia.

said Junco. “The garden shows the kids where the food comes from and teaches them healthy eating habits. Many have never seen fresh vegetables growing in a garden and are fascinated the first time they see a tomato ripening on the vine. The garden also teaches the kids about the renewable resources, such as fuel, that can be made from agricultural commodities.” Third grade teacher Nancy DeLucia is responsible for maintaining the garden at Miramar Elementary and has incorporated it into nearly every subject of her curriculum. In science her students read, discuss, and learn about the different parts of a plant, what they need to survive and how different plants grow and thrive at different times of the year. Additionally, the students discuss the need for healthy eating choices and learn about the food pyramid. In math, kids measure and chart plant growth and production of flowers, seeds and fruits or vegetables. To connect social studies, they research where specific plants originally came from and brainstorm how they may have gotten here as they study about the ways seeds travel.

All the students look forward to going out to the garden to assist in the maintenance of the plants and learn about how people years ago had to grow and harvest their own food. “The garden provides students with a ‘real-world’ experience and allows them to get in touch with nature,” DeLucia said. “It’s so rewarding to hear back from parents and other teachers about how much the students love the garden. It’s even more rewarding when I hear from a parent that they’ve started their own garden at home.” Since Project Primal began, West Broward students have helped set up gardens at 11 schools in the area. “We are always looking for motivated teachers that want to sponsor a garden so we can continue to spread our passion for teaching agriculture, healthy eating habits, and science, said Junco.

they prefer to work in the school’s garden. They are learning how to grow fresh vegetables and herbs. They are also learning about healthy eating as they sample what they grow. The school planted the first phase of its garden with the help of West Broward High School science teacher Gustavo Junco and some of his students. Junco started a school garden building club, Project Primal, as a way to educate the next generation on the benefits of healthy eating, as well as how to grow sustainably and organically, using energy, fertilizer, and water wisely. The garden was so successful that he decided to reach out to other schools in the area to help them build their own. West Broward students create the garden using donated materials and the hosting school maintains it. “Most students in the area are suburban kids with little exposure to farming,”

Business Loan Seminar Series I am proud to announce my Business Loan Seminar Series. This is a primary component of my “Broward Means Business” initiative and is designed to increase awareness about the State of Florida’s loan programs for the benefit of small businesses. The seminars are particularly timely as many small business owners use the spring and summer to seek financing to expand and create jobs and many entrepreneurs take the steps to create a new business. Every small business has struggles – some early on, some during growth, others just pop up here and there. As a small business owner myself, I understand the importance of having the knowledge and access to these programs. I want to make sure that every opportunity is given to businesses to be informed and given the tools necessary to qualify for loans or grants under the program. My Broward Means Business initiative includes educational programs. These free seminars will empower business owners and operators to get their share of these funds. I will be inviting guest speakers from State, Federal and Private Institutions to discuss lending and what is required to receive loans for their business needs. One of the keys to my program that is different than other loan series and workshops is that I am asking the presenters to bring substantive and factual

information that will help the businesses immediately with securing funds to support their business. Businesses will be able to follow up directly with the presenters and their institutions as well as the Broward County’s Office of Economic and Small Business Development. Attendees can expect to leave the seminar with a working knowledge of Florida’s State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI) , including an overview of the two primary programs – Florida Venture Capital Program and the Small Business Loan Support Program. The Florida Venture Capital Program targets emerging companies in the state with long-term growth potential. It seeks to invest in and grow emerging Florida businesses; enhance Florida’s job creation efforts; increase investment capital in Florida through partnerships with existing Florida venture capital firms and attracting co-investment from regional and national investment firms; and generate long-term capital appreciation for future redeployment. The Small Business Loan Support Program provides small businesses with tools to access commercial banks and export financing. It is designed to assist small businesses in obtaining loan approvals and leverage private capital for use in startup costs, working capital, business procurement, franchise fees, equipment, inventory, or the purchase of owner-occupied commercial real estate. The program provides a lender with the necessary security, in the form of a partial guarantee, for the lender to approve a loan or line-ofcredit. Created as part of the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010, the SSBCI was designed by the federal government to help states strengthen existing loan and equity programs and/or create new

programs that support financing small businesses. Florida was allocated more than $97.6 million by the U.S. Department of Treasury to implement the SSBCI. States can use these funds for programs that leverage private lending to creditworthy small businesses to expand and create jobs. The Business Loan Seminar series is being presented in conjunction with the Office of Economic and Small Business Development and the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, Enterprise Florida, South Florida Regional Planning Council, Metro Broward Capital and Florida First Capital Finance Corporation (FFCFC). New Federal Rules Help Homeowners Facing Foreclosure By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

O

ne of the most difficult challenges we face in assisting

homeowners through the process of a loan modification is the threat of foreclosure, or foreclosure sale of the property we are trying to preserve. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recently issued new mortgage servicing rules designed to protect borrowers when it comes to mortgage loans. These rules became effective on January 10, 2014, but many homeowners are unaware of these important changes in the law. Under the new rules, mortgage servicers are required to implement major changes in the way they do business. A mortgage servicer is the company that collects monthly mortgage payments from borrowers on behalf of the owner of the loan, as well as tracks account balances, manages the escrow account, handles loan modification applications, and pursues foreclosure in the case of defaulted loans. The CFPB now requires mortgage servicers to send more detailed periodic billing statements, provide timely interest rate adjustment notices, promptly credit mortgage payments, provide payoff requests in 7 days or less, provide options to force-placed insurance, and quickly resolve errors and provide information requests. The most significant benefit for homeowners from these rules is that it restricts “dual tracking.”

Dual tracking is when a mortgage servicer considers a homeowner for a loan modification, and at the same time proceeds with a foreclosure action against that homeowner. Under the new rules, a mortgage servicer CANNOT START FORECLOSURE until at least 4 months AFTER the homeowner stops paying the loan to provide the homeowner enough time to pursue a loan modification. If a loan modification application is made, the servicer CANNOT START FORECLOSURE unless the servicer notifies the borrower that he/she is not eligible for any loan modification, the borrower rejects a loan modification offer, or the borrower fails to comply with a trial modification. Also, if already in foreclosure, the mortgage servicer CANNOT REQUEST FINAL JUDGMENT OR CONDUCT A FORECLOSURE SALE if the homeowner submits a complete loan modification package at least 37 days before the foreclosure sale. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a one-of-a-kind DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our highly experienced legal team. The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm have more than 40 years of combined legal experience, and we are privileged to successfully represent hundreds of homeowners in our community. We have foreclosure defense, loan modification and bankruptcy departments all in the same office. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free personal consultation with an attorney (not a paralegal or assistant), or visit www. arcialawfirm.com to schedule your appointment.

ow many of us have suffered from annoying

and painful conditions like ingrown nails, thick nails, and bruised nails? We continue to put on our favorite shoes, our toes squirming inside them, and walk around in discomfort. We hope that the problem will go away on its own if we ignore it. Ignoring the problem, however, will not make it go away. Ingrown nails can be very painful. It occurs when a toe nail grows into the skin surrounding it. This can happen typically on either edge of the big toe. The cause of an ingrown nail may be due to improper trimming, inherited nail deformities, injuries, fungal infections or too much pressure on the nail. People commonly complain the most about ingrown nails when walking. Pain may be felt at the tip of the toe or all the way back to the base of the toe. You should not dismiss the pain as minor, because it could lead to infection, inflammation or even more serious conditions. Treatment for an ingrown nail should include an evaluation by a podiatric physician. If the nail is infected, he could prescribe an antibiotic. He may also trim the nail, remove part of the nail and/or treat the nail with a substance that will keep the ingrown part of the nail from growing back. To lesson pain, the podiatrist may give an anesthetic during the removal procedure. Bruised nails can be caused by an acute injury to the toe or a repetitive injury. Podiatrists often see these injuries in patients involved in sports like running or in patients who have had heavy objects fall on their toe. The big toe is most commonly the victim. A podiatrist may treat the bruised nail by removing it with the aid of an anesthetic, or drilling a hole in the nail to relieve pressure and promote drainage. You may also be prescribed pain medication. Soaking or icing the nail may also help. If your pain is tolerable, the nail can be left alone to fall off. A new nail commonly grows in to replace the old nail. There can be many causes of abnormally thick or crumbling nails: injury, pressure from shoes, fungal infections, diabetes, psoriasis or vascular disease. Sometimes the nail will loosen and fall off. The nail can also appear brittle, rigid, or yellow as well as thick. It is important to visit a podiatrist if you have this problem, because it may be a symptom of a serious underlying condition. If the thick nail is caused by a fungal infection, a culture may be done. If the nail is not infected, it may be thinned by trimming, filing or grinding. If there is a fungal infection, topical anti-fungals can be prescribed. For those who do not wish to take medication, ask your podiatrist if he can do a laser treatment on the fungal nail. In sum, these common toenail problems can be resolved successfully with the help of your podiatric physician. In addition, many toenail problems can be prevented by simply wearing the correct shoes and trimming your nails properly. Dr. Neal M. Bullock’s office is located at 17013 Pines Boulevard, in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954 450-4200.

What is a Cataract? By Dr. Michael Chesen

C

ataracts are the leading cause of decreased

vision in adults older than 65. It is the most common surgical procedure for elderly people. You can still get an “age-related” cataract when you are in your 40s or 50s, although most likely it will be small and not rob you of your vision. Only 15 percent of people are affected with cataracts by age 55, but this figure jumps to 50 percent by age 75, and 90 percent by age 85. It is important to note, however, that cataracts worsen over time … so it’s never too late-or early-to try to prevent them and/or treat them.

What is a cataract?

A cataract is an opaque spot on the lens of the eye that you can’t see through. The lens lies behind the iris and the pupil, and works like a camera lens. It focuses light onto the retina at the back of the eye, where an image is recorded. The lens also adjusts the eye’s focus, which allows you to see things clearly, both up close and far away. The lens is made of mostly water and protein. But as we age, some of the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens. This is a cataract. Over time, the cataract may grow larger and cloud more of the lens, making it harder to see. The haze can vary in size, density, and location, which means its effect on your vision will also vary. At first, many people experience an overall reduction in their vision. They may need more light to read by or may have difficulty reading street signs while driving. A cataract can also affect depth perception, which is particularly dangerous for the elderly, who are more prone to falling.

Common symptoms of cataracts include:

Cloudy, fuzzy, foggy, or filmy vision Changes in the way you see colors Problems driving at night because headlights seem too bright Problems with glare from lamps or the sun Frequent changes in your eyeglass prescription Double vision Better near vision (temporarily in farsighted people only) Note: These symptoms also can be signs of other eye problems

What causes cataracts?

Free radicals - natural by products of metabolism - are highly reactive chemicals that cause oxidation, which in turn causes aging. Toxins, pharmaceutical drugs, and smoking Diabetes (high levels of sugar in the blood contribute to cataract formation, so it’s not surprising that diabetics are 3-4 times more likely to have cataracts) The protein in the lens changes from the wear and tear it takes over the years, and hardens and loses its ability to focus.

Treatment of cataracts

Cataracts can only be treated surgically. This procedure would be performed by an Ophthalmologist, and is often an outpatient procedure. The surgery often involves placement of intraocular lens (IOL), which is used to replace the eyes natural lens, which is removed in the cataract surgery. Glasses may be required for far/near correction following the procedure, depending on the type IOL used and the surgical outcome.

The pre- and post-surgical care of the cataract patient may be and often is provided by an Optometrist. Dr. Chesen can assist patients in finding the appropriate Ophthalmologist for their care, and can be reached at 954-437-9733.

The Unstable Knee Joint -- ACL Tears By Fernando A. Moya, MD, PhD

The most common mechanism of tearing has to do with a high energy athletic event where the knee is subjected to high torque forces that are required for our bodies to change directions or come to a stop. Also, many people are tearing their ACL’s while skiing. The most common story by patients is that something suddenly happened on the knee and they heard or felt a “pop” with immediate swelling and guarding. The physical examination demonstrates that the knee is “loose,” comes out of its normal socket, and there is swelling and guarding. The immediate treatment of this knee will consist of ice, protection and getting diagnostic studies such as X-rays and MRI scan. The X-ray is usually normal. The MRI usually confirms the tear of the ACL and excludes further damage of other structures in the knee joint like articulate cartilage, meniscus cartilage, bone contusions, bone fractures and tears in any other ligament. Most of these patients are young and athletic and most of them will require surgical intervention to fix the problem. Again, the problem is an unstable knee joint because of a tear of the ACL. You can fix the knee joint by using your own tissue (from patella tendon area or from hamstrings). In older athletes or patients who want to minimize the size of the scars and time in the operating room, you can use transplant tissue to replace the torn ACL. The surgery is outpatient and arthroscopic in nature with small wounds and takes approximately one or two hours to do.

Normal ACL

ACL Tear

Repaired ACL

The rehabilitation of the surgery consists of physical therapy with the objective to return the athlete to unrestricted sports activities in approximately six months. The success rate and achievement of this goal is very high and most patients are very happy that they had the surgery. Not everybody is a candidate for surgery and in this type of older sedentary patient a strenuous physical therapy protocol is established and with the protection of a brace most of them can return to sports. ear M iramar R esidents:

I hope that this letter finds you and your families well and looking forward to an enjoyable and relaxing summer. It is a great time of the year where we all anticipate getting to enjoy more time together and remember why we work so hard year round. We look forward to watching our kids play and learn during this time. It reminds us all of the most important things in life. We must also remember that these times won’t last forever. The day will come when our children will become adults and must go out into the world on their own. While as parents we will never stop worrying about our kids, no matter how old they become, we must provide them with the knowledge, skills, and abilities that will enable them to become successful in a world that is much more different than the one we know now.

With that in mind, it is my hope that you will take advantage of the social, physical and educational programs offered in the City that are geared to help children think creatively while at the same time have fun. Programs offered through our Cultural Arts Center encourage children’s natural curiosity and foster a love of learning that will be instilled in them for the rest of their lives. The programs also create dynamic interaction between parents and children when children talk about what they learned on their own, as opposed to just reciting their homework assignment. When children are exposed to different types of programs where testing and homework are not mandatory, their love of learning can expand almost exponentially. It is this ‘spirit of knowledge’ that invites miracles to happen, and the excitement of learning that will carry them successfully into the next school year and later on in life. While developing a healthy mind we must not forget to develop a healthy body. Our Parks & Recreation Department along with Ansin Sports Complex offer well rounded fitness programs to suit all ages and levels. By instilling a sense of physical well-being, our children will be able to feel good about themselves which couples perfectly with a healthy mind. Michael Carr said that “all kids are gifted, some just open their packages earlier than others.” I can think of no time of the year where that statement is as relevant as it is in the summer. I encourage you to explore the City’s programs so that our children’s minds can discover so many new things, travel to new places, meet new people, and see more of the world that they burst with excitement and want to share what they learned with their parents. I hope that you all take the opportunity to enjoy the time you spend with your children during the summer and cultivate their love of learning. Warmest regards, Lori C. Moseley Mayor

American Military Academy of Florida Is “Building a Better World…One Student at a Time” By Stacey Bomser

Our students benefit from high academic and spiritual standards with an emphasis on patriotism and character development. A variety of extracurricular interests, such as music, physical training, Spanish, art, military customs and courtesies also play an important role in our school program.

Silver Isles Cleaners Offers High Quality Service By Debby Teich

S

ince 2005, S ilver I sles Cleaners has been offering dry cleaning, shirt laundering and more. They deliver high quality, personalized service at each of the three locations in Miramar and Cooper City.

Jaime Z. Bendeck, President/Owner, answered some commonly asked questions about Silver Isles Cleaners.

Raiza Martinez (front desk), Jaime Bendeck (owner) and Maria Trina Delfin (front desk) serve customers with the same professional service offered at the other locations.

When did you open? Silver Isles Cleaners has been open since 2005. We have two locations in Miramar. In February, we opened our newest location in the Countryside Shops in Cooper City.

offer alterations, handbag cleaning and shoe repair services to complement our clothing cleaning services. How do you handle specific customer requests? Our system has the capability of storing customer information about how they want clothing cleaned, pressed or packaged. We note special requests on the account and invoices, such as “crease on all pants,” “do not use paper cover under the bag” or “check cuffs for no crease.” We want to make sure that customers are satisfied on each visit. How do you make your services convenient for customers? We notify many of our customers by email/text when their orders are ready. This creates a better customer experience, since they know in advance if their clothing is ready before attempting to pick it up. Regular customers can buy express bags, which come with a name tag. This allows them to drop their clothing knowing that it will be properly handled. We are also able to send customers their invoices by email, which saves them wait time, as well as a little paper.

What services do you offer? We provide a variety of services, such as: dry cleaning, hand-finished business shirts that are creased and pinned individually; expert alterations; expert shoe repair and polish; high end handbag/ purse repair and shampoo; expert leather cleaning and repair; drapes, rug and curtain cleaning; wedding gown cleaning and boxed preservation; shoe dyeing and tinting; comforter cleaning; and more.

Do you offer coupons? We have ongoing deals on our website for those who love our service, but are price conscious.

What distinguishes you from your competition? My staff and I always strive to meet our customers’ strict demands for timeliness, quality and service. Our goal is to finish business shirts better than any other cleaners in the area by paying close attention to details, such as pinned and well-formed collars, as well as creased and pinned shirt sleeves. We never place more than four shirts in a bag and carefully inspect the clothing prior to placing it inside. We also

DONATION FOR READING ROOM

The Jason Taylor Reading Room, located at the Miramar Youth Enrichment Center, a comprehensive after-school program designed to address academic challenges among innercity youth, received a $21,500 donation from American Heritage High School recently. The money was raised through the faculty talent show and donated by the American Heritage Pre-Law Society. Presenting the check to Taylor, a former Miami Dolphins’ defender and 2007 NFL Man of the Year, Coach Mike Rumph, Head Coach at American Heritage School, and Nikki Laurie, Event Chair and Director of the AHS Pre-Law Society.

HEALTHY SCHOOL

Sunset Lakes Elementary was chosen as one of three winners in a contest sponsored by Coventry Healthcare and the American Heart Association to find the healthiest kids in Broward County. Students in Johnna Weise’s third grade class created a two minute video with the help of parent Johanna Barnett. Principal Marc Charpentier narrated the video that included Coach Herman Sakowitz and Cafeteria Manager Marie Maggio. The reward was a visit from “Sportacus” from the television show Lazy Town. Kids in grades K-3 enjoyed a show about health and good habits.

YARD SALE

Miramar’s Fire-Rescue Department held a huge yard sale on April 12 at Station #70 to benefit Relay for Life and raised $2,406. Hundreds of residents came out for the sale.
