School’s Out for Summer!

I

t ’ s officially summer here in South Florida . The

kids have finished their final days of school and the hot, humid weather is here again. It’s time to seriously think about summer activities and vacations. We live in the perfect place to enjoy all that summer has to offer. It does not matter whether you take a short trip to the breathtaking Florida Keys or prefer the magic of Orlando, or simply spend the lazy days of summer relaxing with friends and family at backyard barbecues and picnics at the beach. It’s not where you go, but rather what you do that is important. Summertime fun is when many precious family memories are made. That big project at work or the never-ending chore list at home can wait. The little things you do with your children, your siblings and your friends are what really matter and create memories for a lifetime. Take the time this summer to enjoy life and each other. I hope you are also enjoying reading our monthly magazines. Some of our readers may have noticed a new logo and a new name on the front cover. Don’t be confused. We are still the same team, the same owner/publisher, and the same great local community news magazine. With six magazines, covering all of West Broward, we wanted to be consistent with one common name – so welcome to Our City Media. PS: Don’t forget to wish dad a Happy Father’s Day this month! Sincerely,

Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Plantation Relay for Life Participants Raise $189,500 By Jill Sharpe

M

ore than 50 teams made up of cancer survivors , families ,

caregivers, local faith-based groups, businesses, and clubs walked in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Broward on April 11, raising more than $189,500. The time and commitment given by the event committee, volunteers, teams, and participants will help the American Cancer Society finish the fight against cancer. Relay For Life is a community-based, volunteer-driven event that honors survivors and caregivers, remembers those lost to the disease, and fights for a world with more birthdays. Individuals and teams gather at a track, park, or fairground to campout and walk overnight in confidence that their effort will lead to a cure. Teams organize and complete fundraisers to raise money for the cause, often continuing their efforts at the event. These funds bring the American Cancer Society one step closer to its goal of helping people stay well by helping them get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back. Since 1985, Relay For Life has developed from one man running around a track for 24 hours to a global event taking place in more than 6,100 communities and 20 countries. “Relay For Life allows the entire community the opportunity to do something positive when so much negative surrounds the disease,” said 2014 Relay For Life event chair, Sarah Rappaport. “I am proud of Plantation for coming together to support one another and help finish the fight against cancer. Thank you to our committee, team captains, participants, and sponsors who helped make this event happen.” To learn more, visit Relay For Life of Plantation or call 1-800-227-2345. The American Cancer Society saves lives and creates more birthdays by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back. For more information, contact the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 or visit www.cancer.org.

Plantation Resident Honored as One of Thirteen “Women of the Year” By Jill Sharpe

T

rish N orman -

Figueiredo, a Plantation resident since 1990, was thrilled to be honored by the 1000 Plus Club to Benefit Cancer as one of their 2014 Women of the Year on April 9th, at a luncheon attended by nearly 600 people at the Signature Grand. She was selected for this honor because of her outstanding volunteer work on behalf of the Children’s Home Society (CHS).

Trish Norman-Figueiredo

Figueiredo’s involvement with the Children’s Home Society began nearly 18 years ago when she worked down the street from the Lorraine Thomas Family Center and Emergency Shelter. She would often drop off collected items and canned goods. In 2006, she joined the newly formed West Broward Auxiliary and promptly jumped into an active role in bringing a new fundraiser to the Auxiliary. Together with her cochairs, the vision of Art4Charity was brought to fruition and much needed funds and awareness was raised. In 2008, she was asked to join the Intercoastal Board of Directors.

Helping Lives Turn Around event co-chairs and founding members: (Left to right) Bonnie Levengood, Janice Lahaye, Lucille DeAngelo, Lorraine Thomas, Kathy Clarkson, Bijette Gebron, Pam Masters and Trish Norman-Figueiredo.

Her role within the CHS Intercoastal Board has grown to include being appointed Advisory Chair and co-chairing the annual Helping Lives Turn Around event. These days, thanks to the efforts of Norman-Figueiredo, the event has become the sole fundraiser for the Intercoastal Division and is truly a labor of love. A mother of two grown sons herself, Norman-Figueriedo’s passion for supporting CHS’s mission of “Embracing Children, Inspiring Lives”, is one that she carries into all areas of her life. “I truly feel that every child deserves a chance to have a happy, safe and nurturing home,” Norman Figueriedo said. “That’s why I do this.” Norman-Figueriedo said her goal is to raise awareness and more money to support the vital programs of CHS every year. In 2009, $53,000 was raised by the Helping Lives Turn Around event she chaired for the first time. Every year since then, that number has grown. This year, proceeds from the event topped $1000,000. As if that isn’t enough, Norman-Figueriedo also supports the American Cancer Society, St. Vincent De Paul Society, Locks of Love, Boys and Girls Club of Broward and Broward Outreach. She is also a member of several local and national business women’s organizations, and is a charter board member of the ABWA Miami Women’s Alliance. Together with her husband Pedro, they own and operate a successful engineering firm, as well as an administrative consulting company. Recently, she has ventured into the online world of eCommerce by opening a care package and specialty gift basket web store called CuddleCube. com. She has two adult sons, Peter and Kenneth, and considers them both to be her greatest achievements in life.

For the past 32 years, the 1000 Plus Club to benefit Cancer has honored 10-13 specially selected non-profit organizations every year, whose contributions have had a significant impact on the quality of life in our community. They do this by honoring the spirit of volunteerism embodied in one dedicated women that each organization chooses each year as its Woman of the Year. Monies raised through the Women of the Year event are used to fund 1000 Plus Club’s Charitable Giving Grant Program, which provides funding to local 501(c)3 organizations that are actively engaged in cancer education, research and patient care. To date, the organization has raised over $4 million through the diligent efforts of the volunteers who are members of the Club and supporters in the community. staff helped kick off National Foster Care Month in May with a tour of ChildNet’s SafePlace Intake and Placement Center in Plantation. ChildNet is the lead child welfare agency in Broward and Palm Beach counties. Coordinated by Leadership Broward Foundation, Inc., as part of a community project, the tour highlighted the need for more loving, caring foster parents to open their hearts and homes to children in foster care in Broward County. ChildNet’s SafePlace emergency respite facility provides a nurturing, childfriendly environment for children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, abandonment or neglect to play and relax while an appropriate placement is identified. “One of the biggest challenges we’re faced with here is finding homes for children whose birthparents end up in jail and are unable to care for their kids,” said Sheriff Israel. “Through working with ChildNet we’ll be able to more effectively provide safety and stability to kids in care. We look forward to collectively impacting the lives of our community’s most vulnerable children.” Among ChildNet tour leaders were Emilio Benitez, president and CEO; Deena Ponto, assistant vice president of support services; and Dr. Elizabeth Wynter, director of community relations. “We’ve been very fortunate in our ability to recruit foster families, improve the training provided to potential foster parents and resolve any issues that might arise almost (L to R): Emilio Benitez, immediately, thanks to support from our closest commuChildNet president and CEO; Sheriff Scott Israel, nity partners and now BSO,” said Benitez. “With between Broward Sheriff’s Office

Husband and Wife Doctor Team Offer a Variety of Services in Their Plantation Family Practice By Jill Sharpe

G

adh Family Practice in Plantation is a

true “family” practice in every sense of the word. In fact, the practice is run by a husband and wife team, Drs. Rundeep and Ruchika Gadh. You don’t find that very often these days. Longtime residents of Plantation, the doctors truly care about their neighbors and treat everyone like family. Drs. Rundeep and Ruchika Gadh answer some commonly asked questions about the practice.

Dr. Ruchika Gadh, describe your background and training. My family is also from

India and I was born and raised near Annapolis, Maryland. I received my Bachelor of Science from the University of Maryland and then attended Nova Southeastern University College of Medicine, where I met my husband and partner, Rundeep Gadh. We both did our family medicine internship/residency training together in Miami. We have three lovely daughters.

Our food panel can help someone determine types of food sensitivity which can often lead to bloating, slow metabolism and weight gain. Food allergens don’t necessarily mean “stay away” but it may give patients an answer to why they can’t lose weight.

Can you elaborate on your weight loss programs? We have

several weight loss programs that incorporate lipotropic B-12 injections. Plantation Community Church Hosts its Annual Easter Palooza By Jill Sharpe

N

early 40

children, ages 2 to 11, enjoyed an Easter Palooza featuring lots of fun activities on Saturday, April 19th at Plantation Community Church on West Broward Boulevard in Plantation. The church, which got its start in 1948, has been hosting an annual children’s Easter event for more than 10 years. According to Pastor Chris Sheriff, the event started as just an egg hunt but then a snack and Easter story were added and in recent years a craft as well. “This year the kids decorated cupcakes and made a stained glass cross,” Pastor Sheriff said. Although the eggs had to be hidden inside this year due to inclement weather, the kids still had a blast. “They got a big dose of sugar but also the beautiful story of Easter,” said Pastor Sheriff. “In planning for this year’s event, we knew we wanted to create an atmosphere where families could enjoy a variety of games, learn the true reason we celebrate Easter and experience the love and happiness of Plantation Community Church,” Pastor Sheriff said. “Through the leadership of Karen Frodge and Janet Weins and the hard work of all our volunteers, I believe that every family was able to experience just that. Next year will be even better!”

Plantation Community Church also has a growing and vibrant teenage youth group that meets on Sunday evenings from 6:15-8:15 p.m. and is offering a vacation Bible school on June 23-27 from 9 a.m. to noon with a Friday evening presentation. For more information, call 954-581-5276.

The event was held at the Jacaranda Country Club and drew more than 120 honorees, club members and family members. “Each volunteer demonstrated her dedication to the community through a variety of projects including the arts, education, fund raising, beautification projects, preservation of local heritage and support of their club’s goals and activities,” said Pat Hinde, President of the Plantation Woman’s Club. MAKING SPORT PARTICIPATION SAFE Concussion. What was once a word mostly associated with professional athletes has now become a worry for parents of athletes of all ages. While a standard sports physical is required by nearly all school and youth sports leagues, this will not provide doctors with important information about a child’s cognitive abilities should a concussion occur. A baseline concussion test will provide physicians valuable clinical information to use if a child suffers a concussion. A complete history and physical along with the baseline concussion test is the best way to protect a young athlete’s safety. For the health and well-being of our community’s student athletes, Broward Health Urgent Care is offering the following exams at all three urgent care centers:

Sports Physical & EKG $65 • Baseline Concussion Testing $15 Total: $80

Ages 10-18 years. By appointment only. Insurance does not cover these exams. Payment will be due at the time of the appointment.

Plantation Resident Julie Talenfeld Is Named JAFCO’s 2014 Woman of Valor By Jill Sharpe

J

ewish Adoption and Foster C are O ptions (JAFCO) honored

Plantation resident Julie Talenfeld at its annual luncheon for her long standing support of the organization including her key role in JAFCO’s annual holiday celebration. Altogether, 135 people gathered for the luncheon to honor Talenfeld, the founder and president of Boardroom Communications, who has handled public relations for JAFCO since 2007. She received the organization’s 2014 Woman of Valor award. For the past six years Talenfeld’s family has sponsored JAFCO’s Annual Chanukah party bringing in traditional Chanukah fare and piles of snow so South Florida children can experience the fun of building a snowman. In 2009, Boardroom Communications was presented with JAFCO’S prestigious Jacob’s Ladder Award for Child Advocacy. “Julie is truly an amazing person who does so much for the organization and for our community,” said Sarah Franco, executive director of JAFCO. “Every year, Julie’s family helps the children by sponsoring our annual Chanukah party and giving them the feeling of joy that is so important all year, but especially during the holidays.” Julie and her husband Howard Talenfeld are also JAFCO Godparents. After the motzi and the candle of hope ceremony, which honors and memorializes five children who die at the hands of abuse every day, luncheon guests listened to an intriguing presentation by Miami Herald Columnist Cindy Krischer-Goodman who spoke about the importance of work/life balance in everyone’s lives. She even shared a few time-saving apps that she uses to help with the daily grind and offered helpful tips on staying balanced. Guests also enjoyed a shopping boutique. In all, the luncheon event raised $15,000 for JAFCO. As JAFCO has been providing services to abused and neglected children since it was established in 1992, their mission was extended in 2009 to provide services and support for families who are raising a child with a developmental disability such as autism, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities, Prader-Willi syndrome and others. Many of the services are offered at the JAFCO Children’s Village in Sunrise, a beautiful 5.6-acre residential facility including a 24-hour emergency children’s shelter and six group homes that provide a safe and loving home for dozens of children from newborns up to 21 years of age. “Seeing smiles on these kid’s faces is truly a wonderful gift,” said Talenfeld. “I am very fortunate to be able to make a difference – and what a difference being able to help has made to me and my family.” For more information, visit jafco.org.

Is It Safe to Whiten My Child’s Teeth? By Dr. Maruri

A

s our society grows more and more estheti -

cally conscious, I have had several parents ask me if it is safe to whiten their child’s teeth. A recent study showed that 32% of children and 19% of these children’s parents were dissatisfied with their tooth color, while only 9% of dentists felt these subjects had an unsatisfactory color. This push for super white (what I refer to as toilet bowl white teeth) is no surprise given that pharmaceutical companies invest twice as much into marketing than research. Over the counter (OTC) tooth whitening is a $2 billion a year industry, and is rapidly growing. To better answer the safety of tooth whitening, we need to better understand the different ways one can whiten their smile. ▸▸ Whitening toothpastes will either contain an abrasive agent to mechanically remove surface stains and increase the whiteness of teeth, and/or a low concentration bleaching agent to slowly bleach teeth over time. While abrasive pastes will “scrub” teeth clean and make them look whiter, they will also abrade teeth and wear away the enamel much faster than regular toothpastes. The low concentration bleach containing toothpastes will have a minimal effect and most of the whitening comes from the mechanical abrasion on the teeth. ▸▸ Whitening strips are filled with 5-15% hydrogen peroxide (HP) and are worn for 5-60 minutes. Approximately 28 days of use are needed to get clinical significant whitening (increase of four shades or more on the Vita shade guide). ▸▸ Custom-made (by your dentist), at-home bleaching trays contain 5-20% carbomide peroxide (CP) gel and are worn at night for one to two weeks. CP is a much more stable molecule than HP and therefore continues to work for several hours after application. Also the gel, unlike the strips, can better reach into interproximal areas (area in-between teeth) ▸▸ Whitening rinses generally contain a low concentration of HP, 1.5%. Studies have shown that systems utilizing trays are much more effective than rinses. Studies show that whitening observed with rinses are not clinically significant. So are any of these techniques safe for children? Few studies have been performed on the safety of whitening children’s teeth (for ethical reasons). Though the American Academy of Pediatric Dentist encourages the judicious use of bleaching in adolescent patients and discourages full-arch cosmetic bleaching for patients with mixed or primary dentition (if baby teeth are still present). The reason is that primary teeth have thinner enamel and larger pulp chambers then permanent teeth. Therefore bleaching agents can better enter into the pulps of these teeth and cause sensitivity. Also, primary teeth are naturally more white then permanent. So there is no reason to worry when your child first set of permanent teeth appears to be darker than the rest of the arch. It is better to wait until all permanent teeth are fully erupted (usually around age 11-13) and be under the supervision of your dentist before you attempt any form of tooth whitening on your child. Teenagers With Jobs Learn Important Life Lessons By Nancy Rappaport, President and CEO of PriorityONE Credit Union of Florida

A

s we reflect upon the school year that is

quickly approaching its end…let’s raise our cup of coffee and salute those kids for all they have accomplished academically and socially. In a society of reality television, cell phones and relative luxury being quite the norm on many school campuses, many parents are concerned that their children may not understand the value of money. They see “stuff” as things they just “have” rather than work to have. As they get older, children are able to start working for their spending money, first as allowance and then as part-time jobs. Not sure the time is right for your teenager to get his first job? We have some reasons why now might be the perfect time!

Time Management

A job will force your teenager to plan study and social times around his work schedule. If, for example, the concert he wants to attend falls during work hours, it becomes a great learning opportunity in how to prioritize. It’s also a good reminder that, without the job, he won’t be able to afford the next set of concert tickets.

Work Ethic

Learning a good work ethic likely starts in the early days of kindergarten, but now is the time it will pay off financially. Teens with good work ethics get noticed by current and potential employers, and this could mean the difference between earning a raise or being stagnant in their salary and roles. Your teen will soon see that if he works hard and goes above and beyond expectations, he could see financial rewards.

Life Skills

Even the most mundane job is likely to be part of a team environment. Communication skills and teamwork are necessary life skills that will serve your

teen for years to come-both in the workforce and in their personal life. A first job is the perfect place to learn, practice, and hone those skills.

Budgeting

With his own hard-earned money in his pocket, your teen will learn the value of money and how to budget it so he has some on hand when he needs it. And he will quickly find out why mom and dad often turned him down in the past.

Choosing a Financial Institution

Spend a little time discussing both the similarities and the differences between banks and credit unions in a way that your child will understand. Explain the difference between being a member/owner and being a customer. Explain the services that are offered by both, how profit works, and that credit unions are notfor-profit. Growing up with a clear knowledge of the differences and the benefits of credit unions will help your child make informed decisions when choosing a financial institution as an adult. Early summer is the perfect time for your teens to start hitting the pavement to find their first job. Encouraging them to do so and providing some simple guidance will set them up for success in the future. oot and ankle injuries are very common in

sports or in general activities of daily living. Many structures including bone, ligament, cartilage and joint lining may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries may occur during the teenage years that may manifest themselves later on. These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time usually to the degree of joint injury. With weightbearing the joint usually loosens and the person is able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive weightbearing. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist. When these injuries are unresponsive to conservative treatment which may include orthotics, medication or rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle. A miniature camera is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on a television screen. The joint is visualized and small instruments, including laser, are introduced into Microfracture Talus the joint to clean out and repair the damage. Fragments of bone and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion. Arthroscopy can be used to treat conditions such as: chronic joint pain and swelling; arthritis and bone spurs; loose bone and cartilage fragments; stiff, scarred joints; chronic instability; and ankle fractures that have not completely recovered. The advantages to arthroscopy include: faster recovery; less pain and swelling; avoids large incisions; low risk of infection; outpatient procedures; and quicker return to activities. Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail to alleviate the pain and deformity of a joint, arthroscopic surgery should be considered. The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition. However, once treated arthroscopically a full return to activity may be possible.
