School’s Out for Summer!

I

t ’ s officially summer here in South Florida . The

kids have finished their final days of school and the hot, humid weather is here again. It’s time to seriously think about summer activities and vacations. We live in the perfect place to enjoy all that summer has to offer. It does not matter whether you take a short trip to the breathtaking Florida Keys or prefer the magic of Orlando, or simply spend the lazy days of summer relaxing with friends and family at backyard barbecues and picnics at the beach. It’s not where you go, but rather what you do that is important. Summertime fun is when many precious family memories are made. That big project at work or the never-ending chore list at home can wait. The little things you do with your children, your siblings and your friends are what really matter and create memories for a lifetime. Take the time this summer to enjoy life and each other. I hope you are also enjoying reading our monthly magazines. Some of our readers may have noticed a new logo and a new name on the front cover. Don’t be confused. We are still the same team, the same owner/publisher, and the same great local community news magazine. With six magazines, covering all of West Broward, we wanted to be consistent with one common name – so welcome to Our City Media. PS: Don’t forget to wish dad a Happy Father’s Day this month! Sincerely,

Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Sunrise Runner is Top U.S. Finisher In Inaugural Wings For Life World Run By Jill Sharpe

I

n a remark-

able global race with no finish line, 50,100 registered participants from around the world simultaneously ran on May 4th in the first-ever Wings for Life World Run, a race dedicated to funding research into spinal cord injury. In the end, the last male and Michael Wardian is passed by the catcher car in the Wings for Life World Run in Sunrise, Fla., after running female running were more than 35 miles and winning his local race. Ethiopia’s Lemawork Ketema in Austria and Elise Molvik in Norway, who ran for 48.83 miles and 34.04 miles, respectively, before being caught by a ‘Catcher Car,’ an innovative moving finish line that pursued the runners from behind. In the United States, Santa Clarita, Calif. runner Calum Neff and Sunrise, Fla. runner Haley Chura were the last male and female running before being caught. Neff was caught at 36.36 miles and Chura was caught at 28.34 miles. According to Anita Gerhardter, CEO of the Wings for Life Foundation, more than 4.16 million dollars was raised directly from the inaugural Wings for Life World Run to benefit spinal cord injury research. Runners of all levels from 164 nations made history as they synchronized their feet at 34 race locations in 32 countries on six continents and attempted to outrun the ‘Catcher Car.’ Runners got a 30-minute head start on the vehicle, which then began to pursue everyone at 9.3 mph. Every hour, the car sped up, first to 9.94 mph, then to 10.56 mph, then 12.43 mph, and finally 21.75 mph. The car stayed at 21.75 mph until the last participant had been caught. In the U.S., runners in custom-created ASICS shirts kicked off the race in the early morning at three locations: Santa Clarita, Calif. at 3 am local time; Denver, Col. at 4 am local time; and in Sunrise, Fla. at 6 am local time. Eight-hundredeighty-three runners came out to participate in the Sunrise race. “Not seeing the global runners, but knowing that they were right there with me in the race, I had to keep pushing myself and it came down to personal drive,” said Neff. “I knew I had to get to the crest of the hill, and that if I did I could put a gap in it because at that point it was head-to-head with Florida. That downhill portion that I worked so hard to get to was what gave me that win today.” As top U.S. finishers, Neff and Chura will choose anywhere in the world to run

Runners take off in the Wings for Life World Run in Sunrise, Fla. More than 880 runners started at 6 a.m. from the BB&T Center before eventually being caught by a “catcher car” moving finish line.

in next year’s Wings for Life World Run. Confirmed cities for the May 3, 2015 race will be announced at a later date and fans are encouraged to sign up for updates at http://www.wingsforlifeworldrun.com/join. “My goal was to run 13 miles, but when the car hadn’t caught me yet once I got to mile 23, I really wanted to win this,” said Haley Chura. “I was thinking about the cause and about people who can’t run, and how lucky I was on this beautiful day. I was relieved when it finally did catch me.” Ethiopia’s Lemawork Ketema in Austria and Norway’s Elise Molvik, the last male and female runners worldwide to be caught by the ‘Catcher Car,’ received the top prize - an extraordinary month-long trip around the world, with stops in Salzburg, Istanbul, Cape Town, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Sydney, Fiji, Los Angeles and Rio de Janeiro. In the wheelchair class, 10-time Paralympic medalist, Tatyana McFadden, outlasted 16 competitors in Sunrise, Fla. to be crowned national champion. She was caught at the 11.3 mile mark and will select any location in the world to race next year. McFadden has had a memorable month, as she also was the winner of the 2014 Boston Marathon women’s wheelchair race.

Members of the Miami Heat Wheelchair basketball team celebrate a moment while watching the Wings for Life World run in Sunrise, Fla. More than 880 participants started the race that began at 6 a.m. in Sunrise.

Eric LeGrand, an inspirational voice in the spinal cord injury community after being paralyzed in a 2010 college football game, was an ambassador for the Wings for Life World Run and attended the Sunrise, Fla. race. Team LeGrand of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, which was established in 2013, is dedicated to funding research to find a cure for paralysis and to help improve the quality of life for people with spinal cord injuries. In addition to LeGrand, hundreds of notable athletes participated globally, whether they ran two miles or 30 miles. Each was eventually caught and passed by the ‘Catcher Car.’ In Sunrise, the headline participants were Summer and Winter Olympian Lolo Jones; wakeboarder Steel Lafferty; ultra marathon champion Michael Wardian; road cycle star Tim Johnson; and Handball legend Timbo Gonzales. The Wings for Life World Run was not a traditional 10K run, nor a marathon with a clear finish line. Across 13 time zones in day and night conditions, geo-synced GPS systems and RFID technology recorded the parallel global results, coordinated by 110 timekeepers with four tons of timing equipment, plus the 34 ‘Catcher Cars.’ Worldwide, approximately 200 cameras and 34 television feeds brought the extravaganza to a world of supporters and spectators, friends and family. Millions of people around the world are living with a spinal cord injury, and each year 250,000 more are traumatically injured – the main cause being traffic accidents. One hundred percent of the registration fees from the World Run go directly to the Wings for Life Foundation to fund research to cure spinal cord injury.

Sunrise Relay For Life Exceeds Fundraising Goals By Jill Sharpe

O

rganizers were thrilled with the success of this

year’s Sunrise Relay for Life as a record $59,000 was raised with more money still coming in at press time. The overnight cancer-fighting event, held at the Sunrise Athletic Complex and based on the sports related theme “Defeat Cancer”, brought in more money than ever before as the community came together in their annual fight against cancer. “We were excited to have 24 teams to help us this year,” said Jessica DeBlois, a specialist with the Relay For Life Florida Division of the American Cancer Society, Inc. “There were also many auxiliary fundraising events, such as the mini relay at Piper High School, which helped us exceed our goal of $51,000.” The sports related theme got participants excited as each team emulated favorite sports heroes. “The teams all chose a sports team or sporting event and decorated their tents in that way,” said DeBlois. Funds raised through the event help the American Cancer Society to impact the lives of those touched by cancer within the community, through both patient services and valuable cancer research. Relay for Life got its start in 1985 when Tacoma, Washington physician Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track. A year later, 340 supporters joined him in the effort and it has grown ever since. Each year, more than 4 million people in over 20 countries take part in the overnight fundraising walk. Sunrise Fire-Rescue Receives American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® EMS Recognition Award By Jill Sharpe

S

unrise Fire -R escue has

received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® EMS Bronze Award that recognizes its commitment and success in implementing specific quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who suffer a severe heart attack known as a STEMI (ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction). Every year, almost 300,000 people experience a STEMI, a type of heart attack caused by a complete blockage of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment. To prevent death, it’s critical to restore blood flow as quickly as possible, either by surgically opening the blocked vessel or by giving clot-busting medication. Unfortunately, a significant number don’t receive prompt reperfusion therapy, which is critical in restoring blood flow. Mission: Lifeline® seeks to save lives by closing the gaps that separate STEMI patients from timely access to appropriate treatments. Mission: Lifeline’s new EMS recognition program recognizes those emergency responders for their efforts in improving STEMI systems of care and improving the quality of life for these patients. Emergency Medical System providers are vital to the success of Mission:

Lifeline®. EMS agencies provide education in STEMI identification and access to 12-lead ECG machines and follow protocols derived from American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology guidelines. The correct tools and training allow EMS providers to rapidly identify the STEMI, promptly notify the medical center and trigger and early response from the awaiting hospital personnel. Agencies that receive the Mission: Lifeline Bronze award have demonstrated at least 75 percent compliance for each required achievement measure for three months (one quarter), and treated at least four STEMI patients for the year. “We commend Sunrise Fire-Rescue for this achievement award, which reflects a significant commitment to improve the quality of care for heart attack patients,” said A. Gray Ellrodt, MD, Chair of the Mission: Lifeline® committee and Chief of Medicine at the Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Mass. “All too many heart attack patients in the United States still fail to receive appropriate treatment for their life-threatening condition within the recommended timeframes. We must all continue this important work to streamline and coordinate regional systems of care to save lives and prevent complications.” “Sunrise Fire-Rescue is dedicated to making our unit among the best in the country, and the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® program is helping us accomplish that by implementing processes for improving STEMI systems of care with the goal of improving the quality of care for all STEMI patients,” said Fire Chief Thomas DiBernardo. “We are pleased to be recognized for our dedication and achievements in emergency medical care for STEMI patients.”

Light Control – Shutters are excellent for room darkening in bedrooms and media rooms. Design tip - If you want 100% light block note there are small light gaps you get with shutters. Size Matters – Vane sizes range from 2½” to 4½” vanes. Design tip - My advice, go for the large 4½” louvers on large openings. This opens up the view to create an open feel. For sliding panels use 3½” louvers or else your frame projects too far into the room. Tilt Style – Front tilt is more traditional while the rear tilt (upcharge) is more contemporary. Design tip - avoid front tilt bar if your panel sizes are narrow. It can look crowded. Perfect Complement – Hunter Douglas shutters complement any décor and window style. Visually-Impaired Kids Enjoy Beeping Egg Hunt By Jill Sharpe

T

he City of S unrise and the Lighthouse of B roward joined forces to create a special

day for visually-impaired kids on April 12th. During its “Egg-stravaganza” Egg Hunt for children, participants were actually able to listen for, rather than see, the eggs they were searching for. “They actually heard the eggs because each one emitted a loud beeping sound,” said Beth Zickar, the Leisure Services Director for the City of Sunrise. Nearly 75 people attended the event, which was geared toward children aged 12 and under, at the Sunrise Athletic Complex. The beeping eggs, each with their own on-off switch to control the beeping sound, were hidden throughout Mr. Bunny’s field. The children were escorted on to the large field by family members or friends. Once they found the beeping eggs, they could redeem them for other eggs filled with prizes and candy which prompted huge smiles. “They absolutely loved it,” said Zickar. Also on hand for the event, was the City’s Fire Department and Easter Bunny, both of whom provided a very tactile experience for the kids. “For many of them, it was more about the feel of the bunny rather than the appearance of the bunny, so it was a different perspective,” Zickar said. The city has been partnering with Lighthouse of Broward for several years to hold the Beeping Egg Hunt. Once organizers purchased the specialized beeping eggs, Zickar said they reached out to the Lighthouse of Broward to combine their efforts for an annual egg hunt. For more than 40 years, the nonprofit agency has been the primary resource for the visually impaired community, providing specialized rehabilitation and skills to enhance the independence, productivity and dignity of the blind or visually impaired. Zickar says the Beeping Egg Hunt ensures visually-impaired youngsters don’t miss out on a favorite annual tradition. “We just want to make sure we are providing services for all our residents and not excluding any one particular group of people. “It serves residents of Sunrise, and I’m sure it goes beyond the borders of our community too,” Zickar said. For more information about the programs and service offered by Lighthouse Broward, call 954-463-4217.

JAFCO Raises $15,000 for Abused and Neglected Children at Spring Luncheon By Jill Sharpe

S

unrise - based J ewish Adoption and Foster C are O ptions (JAFCO) raised $15,000 for abused and neglected children in the tricounty area at their annual spring luncheon in April. Julie Talenfeld, a longtime local supporter, was honored at the event as the organization’s 2014 Woman of Valor for her key role in JAFCO’s annual holiday celebration. Altogether, 135 people gathered for the luncheon to honor Talenfeld, the founder and president of Boardroom Communications, who has handled public relations for JAFCO since 2007. For the past six years Talenfeld’s family has sponsored JAFCO’s Annual Chanukah party bringing in traditional Chanukah fare and piles of snow so South Florida children can experience the fun of building a snowman. In 2009, Boardroom Communications was presented with JAFCO’S prestigious Jacob’s Ladder Award for Child Advocacy. “Julie is truly an amazing person who does so much for the organization and for our community,” said Sarah Franco, executive director of JAFCO. “Every year, Julie’s family helps the children by sponsoring our annual Chanukah party and giving them the feeling of joy that is so important all year, but especially during the holidays.” Julie and her husband Howard Talenfeld are also JAFCO Godparents. After the motzi and the candle of hope ceremony, which honors and memorializes five children who die at the hands of abuse every day, luncheon guests listened to an intriguing presentation by Miami Herald Columnist Cindy Krischer-Goodman who spoke about the importance of work/life balance in everyone’s lives. She even shared a few time-saving apps that she uses to help with the daily grind and offered helpful tips on staying balanced. Guests also enjoyed a shopping boutique. As JAFCO has been providing services to abused and neglected children since it was established in 1992, their mission was extended in 2009 to provide services and support for families who are raising a child with a developmental disability such as autism, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities, Prader-Willi syndrome and others. Many of the services are offered at the JAFCO Children’s Village in Sunrise, a beautiful 5.6-acre residential facility including a 24-hour emergency children’s shelter and six group homes that provide a safe and loving home for dozens of children from newborns up to 21 years of age. “Seeing smiles on these kid’s faces is truly a wonderful gift,” said Talenfeld. “I am very fortunate to be able to make a difference -- and what a difference being able to help has made to me and my family.”

Piper High School Student is Crowned Broward’s Top Poet By Jill Sharpe

P

iper H igh School J unior Zoharian Williams has been writing

poetry since he was four years old but it wasn’t until very recently that he received any recognition for his work. Williams, President of the Poetry Club at Piper High, recently entered the second annual district wide poetry slam, a program of the Jason Taylor Foundation, and won first place. In total, 13 poets, representing 13 different Broward County high schools, competed in the Omari Hardwick blueapple slam on April 25th at Nova Southeastern University’s Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center. Williams was announced the big winner after three rounds of competition. He received a trophy and a $500 check. Piper High School also received a check as a result of his victory. Williams wrote one of this competition poems about his mom, one abut dreams and one about his transformation from a rapper to a poet. “A lot of people related to what I was saying, though I don’t write to relate to people, but write to express my feelings,” he said. “In the process, the people loved it. It’s beautiful.”

Williams said he spent many hours outside of school preparing for the slam. “I was that crazy guy at bus stops doing poems and practicing with strangers around,” he said. “I would go to this bridge above our freeway and yell out poetry above the cars so that on stage there would be no distractions. People wouldn’t distract me if cars didn’t.” The blueapple Poetry Slam is an elimination style competition. The poets are judged by a diverse panel featuring prominent South Florida personalities including Dr. Desmond K. Blackburn, Chief School Performance and Accountability Officer for Broward County Public School; Datrina Campins, business woman and television personality; Vivian Gonzalez, WSVN Morning Meterologist; Dr. Christine Jackson, Nova Southeastern University Professor; and O.J. McDuffie, former Miami Dolphins wide receiver and two-time MVP. Also highlighting the evening was an exclusive appearance by rising R&B star George Tandy, Jr., who performed his hit single, “March” which currently rounds out the top three songs on the Billboard Adult R&B Chart behind Pahrrell Williams “Happy” and John Legends “All of Me”. In addition the night featured a performance by Weston based youth dance crew, Heroes of Hip Hop, and a live painting

exhibition by Urban Pop Artist, Surge. Established prior to the 2012-2013 school year by the Jason Taylor Foundation with actor and poet Omari Hardwick (Being Mary Jane, Verses & Flow, Middle of Nowhere, For Colored Girls) in partnership with the School Board of Broward County’s Department of Diversity, Cultural Outreach and Prevention, the blueapple Poetry Network was created to build a community of young people across the country who will develop and utilize critical literary skills and self expression, both written and through performance, as a vehicle for prevention, social activism and change, ultimately empowering youth, the schools they attend and the communities in which they live. Piper High School Assistant Principle Matt Dearen said he loves the program because it is so positive and provides such a great creative outlet for students. “It ties urban culture together with literacy in a way that connects kids,” Dearen said. “A program like this showcases how much talent there really is out there.” Williams, who plans to major in Literature at FAU after he graduates high school, said he has received a lot of support for his poetry writing from his family, his school and the community. Darius Daughtry, bluapple Poetry Director, has given him lots of encouragement. Piper High School principle Angel Gomez showed his pride for Williams by taking him to perform in front of all the high school prin-

cipals in Broward County. Williams received a standing ovation. “The person who is probably the proudest though is my mom,” Williams said. “She talks about my accomplishments to anyone who will listen to her.” Winning this competition has definitely given me a big confidence boost, said Williams.” “My new motto is dream big.”

Legally Speaking

To Appeal or Not Appeal By Evan Baron

O

ne of the most misunderstood aspects of

the law is the Appeal. Everyone has heard the term, but most people don’t really understand what the process entails. Although everyone technically has the right to appeal a lower court’s decision, only under limited circumstances will the filing of an appeal be valid. Appeals in Florida are filed with the District Courts of Appeal. There are 5 District Courts of Appeal, which cover the entire state. In Broward County appeals are filed in the 4th District Court of Appeal, which is physically located in Palm Beach County. Cases that are appealed in Miami Dade County would be appealed to the 3rd District Court of Appeal, which is located in Miami Dade County. There are certain deadlines which must be followed in order to file an appeal. An appeal must be filed within 30 days of the date that a final order is signed by the Court. I sometimes get individuals who call me to inquire about an appeal from an order signed six months before. Unfortunately I must inform that they missed the deadline and so the order in question has now become final.

Except under limited circumstances, only final orders can be appealed. If a judge rules unfavorably in a matter during a hearing, that ruling cannot usually be appealed until a final order is signed. An appeal is not a re-trial of the case. An appeal does not require witnesses to come to court and give testimony all over again. It is not a “DO OVER.” In an appeal you are asking a three judge panel to review the lower courts decisions to determine if there were any errors of law. If a judge does not allow certain testimony or evidence to be introduced into a trial, that may be an error of law and can be appealed. If a judge listens to testimony and does not believe a witness, that is a matter of credibility and cannot be appealed. As you can see, the process is very technical in nature. Only issues which are preserved can be appealed. If in a divorce the couple voluntarily enters into a Marital Settlement Agreement, neither one can subsequently file an appeal, since an Agreement was reached. Such an agreement is binding upon the parties. If, however, the parties do not reach an Agreement, and a Judge issues a Final Judgment, either party may file an appeal and question the Court’s ruling. Statistics show that only a very small percentage of appeals are in fact granted. In most instances, if an appeal is granted; the case is sent back to the trial court for further proceedings; consistent with the Appellate Court’s ruling. There generally is no time limit for an Appellate Court to decide and waiting 12 months for a decision is not all that unusual. I strongly suggest that if you are considering an appeal, make sure you are within your 30 day window and hire an attorney. The law firm of Evan H. Teenagers With Jobs Learn Important Life Lessons By Nancy Rappaport, President and CEO of PriorityONE Credit Union of Florida

A

s we reflect upon the school year that is

quickly approaching its end…let’s raise our cup of coffee and salute those kids for all they have accomplished academically and socially. In a society of reality television, cell phones and relative luxury being quite the norm on many school campuses, many parents are concerned that their children may not understand the value of money. They see “stuff” as things they just “have” rather than work to have. As they get older, children are able to start working for their spending money, first as allowance and then as part-time jobs. Not sure the time is right for your teenager to get his first job? We have some reasons why now might be the perfect time!

Time Management

A job will force your teenager to plan study and social times around his work schedule. If, for example, the concert he wants to attend falls during work hours, it becomes a great learning opportunity in how to prioritize. It’s also a good reminder that, without the job, he won’t be able to afford the next set of concert tickets.

Work Ethic

Learning a good work ethic likely starts in the early days of kindergarten, but now is the time it will pay off financially. Teens with good work ethics get noticed by current and potential employers, and this could mean the difference between earning a raise or being stagnant in their salary and roles. Your teen will soon see that if he works hard and goes above and beyond expectations, he could see financial rewards.

Life Skills

Even the most mundane job is likely to be part of a team environment. Communication skills and teamwork are necessary life skills that will serve your

teen for years to come-both in the workforce and in their personal life. A first job is the perfect place to learn, practice, and hone those skills.

Budgeting

With his own hard-earned money in his pocket, your teen will learn the value of money and how to budget it so he has some on hand when he needs it. And he will quickly find out why mom and dad often turned him down in the past.

Choosing a Financial Institution

Spend a little time discussing both the similarities and the differences between banks and credit unions in a way that your child will understand. Explain the difference between being a member/owner and being a customer. Explain the services that are offered by both, how profit works, and that credit unions are notfor-profit. Growing up with a clear knowledge of the differences and the benefits of credit unions will help your child make informed decisions when choosing a financial institution as an adult. Early summer is the perfect time for your teens to start hitting the pavement to find their first job. Encouraging them to do so and providing some simple guidance will set them up for success in the future. Safety Tips For a Happy Summer

Call the Pest Control Professionals Home · Business · Commercial

BY THOMAS DIBERNARDO, SUNRISE FIRE CHIEF

A

s the summer months begin to heat up once

again, Sunrise Fire-Rescue encourages everyone to keep the following safety tips in mind for a safe and happy summer. June 1 marks the beginning of hurricane season, and there have already been two named storms in the Atlantic. Now is the time to be prepared. Review your hurricane plan and gather necessary supplies well ahead of any potential storms. Hurricane kits should include essentials such as non-perishable food, water, and medical supplies to last three to five days after a storm. A full list of suggested supplies is available on the City of Sunrise website below. Hurricanes are not the only weather issues affecting our area this summer. Rising temperatures and heat indexes can cause heat stroke if the proper precautions are not taken. It is important to stay hydrated while outdoors. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, and stay away from beverages with alcohol or caffeine that dehydrate the body.

Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Instead, engage in outdoor activities in the early morning or early evening to prevent overheating and dehydration. Wearing sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more, and using tents or sunshades will also help protect against overexposure to the heat and harmful UV rays. Keeping our children safe is always a priority, and this summer is no exception. Never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle. Temperatures can exceed 100 degrees in a matter of minutes in enclosed vehicles. This can cause heat stroke and even death in young children and pets. Swimming in pools and at the beach are great ways to stay cool this summer. Remember to always practice pool safety. Never leave a child unattended in or near a swimming pool or any body of water. Always have adult supervision on the pool deck when a child is swimming. Summer thunderstorms can happen quickly and are common in South Florida, which means lightning and at times heavy rains. If you can hear thunder, you should seek shelter inside a home, large building or vehicle. Stay away from large trees and get out of the water immediately. For more information and safety tips, visit the City of Sunrise website at www.sunrisefl.gov. And as always, in the event of an emergency dial 9-1-1 immediately.

oot and ankle injuries are very common in

sports or in general activities of daily living. Many structures including bone, ligament, cartilage and joint lining may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries may occur during the teenage years that may manifest themselves later on. These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time usually to the degree of joint injury. With weightbearing the joint usually loosens and the person is able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive weightbearing. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist. When these injuries are unresponsive to conservative treatment which may include orthotics, medication or rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle. A miniature camera is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on a television screen. The joint is visualized and small instruments, including laser, are introduced into the joint to clean out and repair the Microfracture Talus damage. Fragments of bone and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion. Arthroscopy can be used to treat conditions such as: chronic joint pain and swelling; arthritis and bone spurs; loose bone and cartilage fragments; stiff, scarred joints; chronic instability; and ankle fractures that have not completely recovered. The advantages to arthroscopy include: faster recovery; less pain and swelling; avoids large incisions; low risk of infection; outpatient procedures; and quicker return to activities. Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail to alleviate the pain and deformity of a joint, arthroscopic surgery should be considered. The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition. However, once treated arthroscopically a full return to activity may be possible. MAYOR’S MESSAGE

Safety Is Top Priority in June BY MICHAEL RYAN, MAYOR OF SUNRISE

T

he month of J une holds special significance

here in South Florida. Not only is it the official start of summer – it’s also the beginning of our annual storm season. That means June is a great time to put safety first. For families, summer is synonymous with school vacation. Whether you’re traveling or relaxing at home, chances are your children will be drawn towards water. Unfortunately, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Florida has the highest unintentional drowning rate in the nation among children age 1–14. How can you do your part to keep children safe? The CDC offers these recommendations: ▸▸ Learn life-saving skills. Everyone should know the basics of swimming (floating, moving through the water) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). ▸▸ Fence it off. Install a four–sided isolation fence, with self–closing and self– latching gates, around backyard swimming pools. This can help keep children away from the area when they aren’t supposed to be swimming. Pool fences should completely separate the house and play area from the pool. ▸▸ Make life jackets a “must.” Make sure kids wear life jackets in and around natural bodies of water, such as lakes or the ocean, even if they know how to swim. Life jackets can be used in and around pools for weaker swimmers too. ▸▸ Be on the look out. When kids are in or near water (including bathtubs), closely supervise them at all times. Adults watching kids in or near water should avoid distracting activities like playing cards, reading books, talking on the phone, and using alcohol. The City of Sunrise can help make your children confident swimmers. We offer free group lessons for residents age 3 and up at several of our community pools. Call our Aquatics office at (954) 747-4636 for details.
