Happy Valentine’s Day!

I

t ’ s hard to believe it ’ s February already. It

seems like just yesterday we were ushering in 2015. If you’re like most of us, the New Year’s resolution is already broken. The kids are back into their school and sports routines and we are back to work, but daydreaming of summer vacation. It’s also the time to make plans for a romantic evening with your special someone this Valentine’s Day. While we contemplate which gift to purchase, we need to remember that the monetary value of a gift is a secondary notion. The most important point is that the gift comes from the heart and there is no better gift than spending valuable time with the ones we love.

Children’s Harbor Receives $25,000 Grant from The UPS Foundation By Debby Teich

C

hildren ’ s Harbor in Pembroke Pines

inspires hope and rebuilds lives by keeping brothers and sisters together in loving foster care homes, and by providing care to pregnant or parenting foster teens and their babies. Feeding as many as 34 children for the entire year, however, can be challenging. After receiving a $25,000 grant from The UPS Foundation, which drives global corporate citizenship and philanthropic programs for UPS, their efforts will be a little easier. “The UPS Foundation is honored to support Children’s Harbor’s efforts to make sure foster children stay united as a family- keeping siblings together, raising them as our own, and giving them the professional guidance they need to rebuild their lives,” said Eduardo Martinez, president of The UPS Foundation. “Our goal is to fund powerful programs that make a lasting difference to the global community.” The grant will be used towards food for the five homes on Children’s Harbor’s campus. It will allow

Children’s Harbor to focus on the other needs of the children, such as providing educational support and therapeutic services.

“We are thrilled to have UPS join us as a partner in providing a safe, healthy and loving home for foster children,” said Sue Glasscock, President and CEO of Children’s Harbor. “Many of our children come to us from unstable homes. This generous grant from UPS will allow us to meet the basic needs of these children,

during the most difficult time in their lives.” Children’s Harbor relies on grants and donations. Since arriving at Children’s Harbor five years ago with over twelve years of experience in the nonprofit field, Director of Development Jennifer Stewart has played a key role helping to increase the fundraising revenue. She was also actively involved with creating the Academic and Life Skills Program. She was recently awarded as the Outstanding Fundraising Professional from the Association of Fundraising Professionals in Broward County. “Jennifer has been a key member of the Children’s Harbor team since joining us in 2009,” said Glasscock. “She has played a huge part in changing the lives of foster children and at risk families in the community, as well as increasing awareness about our organization.” Children’s Harbor is located at 19425 SW 58th Manor in Pembroke Pines. Pooches in Pines Reunites Dogs with Their Owners By Debby Teich

I

f you have lost your dog and you live in

Pembroke Pines, Pooches in Pines may have found it. The volunteer organization works with the Pembroke Pines Police Department’s Animal Assistance Program to return dogs, found by the Pembroke Pines Police, to their owners. Since the program started in 2011, it has saved nearly 600 animals. Approximately 70% of the dogs that are found are reunited with their owners. By county ordinance, dogs without identification are held for three days and dogs with identification are held for five days. After that, they are released to Broward Animal Care, where they may be euthanized before their owners can claim them. Pooches in Pines can keep them for longer. When the owner cannot be found, Pooches in Pines works with rescue groups and volunteers to achieve its secondary goal of re-homing the dogs in its care. All of the dogs are seen by a veterinarian to be vaccinated, spayed, neutered, and microchipped. They also undergo any minor surgery deemed necessary. They are then placed in loving temporary foster homes until a new permanent home is found through the adoption process. To make it easier to reunite a dog with its owner, Pooches in Pines recommends that dogs wear an ID tag with its owner’s cell phone number, name and address. It also recommends that all pet owners micro-

chip their animals and update the registration with the microchip registry company. Pooches in Pines is 100% operated by volunteers, who have regular full time jobs outside of the program. Most of them are police officers who walk, feed, bathe and play with the dogs during their breaks or before and after work. Although kennel facilities to shelter the dogs are provided by the PPPD, all expenses necessary to care for the animals, including the cost of the veterinarian, are solely dependent on private donations. Pooches in Pines is always in need of foster homes for dogs or cats, as well as people willing to put up signs when dogs are found. It also accepts donations of old towels, dog food, dog flea and tick medications, leashes and collars (used and new), and dog crates. These items can be brought to the Pembroke Pines Police Station at 9500 Pines Boulevard. Tell the desk officer that you are donating items for the Animal Assistance Program. Pooches in Pines recently received 501(c)3 status, so all donations are tax deductible. For more information, visit PoochesinPines.com or send an email to poochesinpines@gmail.com. Donations can be sent to 9500 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines, FL 33024. Checks can be made out to “Pooches in Pines.” There is also a wish list on Amazon, which can be found at http://amzn.com/w/KTMIWVYCPZS8.

Find Bargains at the Flea Market and Bazaar By Debby Teich

B

argain hunters from

near and far are expected to meet at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center in Pembroke Pines for the Flea Market and Bazaar. They will have an opportunity to search through tables of treasures from over 100 venders in an indoor, air conditioned room. The event will be held on February 7, from 8am to 3pm, and February 8, from 9am to 3pm. Admission Shoppers find bargains at the last flea market. and parking are free. “This Flea Market and Bazaar is a collectors and bargain hunters dream,” said Helen Daniels, Recreation Supervisor. “With over 100 vendors, all sorts of treasures can be found!” There will be thousands of household items, toys, clothing, jewelry, record albums, baseball cards, tea pots, baby blankets and much more. There will also be food available in Emilio’s Café. Buyers are encouraged to come early, since a large crowd of people always forms before the doors open. Most know what they are looking for and want to be the first to find it. Carolyn Kolben has attended for the past three years. “I always find some great china for my collection and lots of other bargains,” said Kolben. “It is nice to be able to attend a flea market in the cool indoors instead of outside in the heat.” The Flea Market and Bazaar is held four times a year. It raises funds for programs at the SWFP Community Center, which provides the community with a

wide range of programs and activities that promote physical and mental stimulation, encourage socialization, cultural education and intellectual enrichment. The Center is committed to offering quality comprehensive services and updated programs that respond to the changing needs within our diverse communities. “By responding to changing needs, we are changing lives every day,” said Daniels. “Whether it’s learning how to establish a fitness and nutrition routine, becoming computer literate, or just learning for personal growth and enrichment, the SWFP Community Center is here to serve our community.” The Southwest Focal Point Community Center is located at 301 NW 103rd Avenue, in Pembroke Pines. Membership for adults 18 and older is free, but required. For information, call 954-450-6888 or visit www. ppines.com, click on Departments and select Community Services.

It is usual, but not always necessary, that a second phase of treatment will be needed after this first phase. Typically, the second phase of treatment is of shorter duration, reflecting the benefit of early intervention of the first phase of treatment.

At what age does Phase I typically begin?

Dr. Cozzarelli answered some commonly asked questions about her practice.

I obtained my dental degree from Francisco Marroquin University in Guatemala City. I then completed a one-year residency program in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at Nova Southeastern University, College of Dental Medicine, followed by a three-year international dental student program, obtaining my doctor in dental medicine degree. At the same time, I served as Teaching Assistant in the Community Dentistry Department. I was then accepted in the Orthodontic Specialty Program at the same institution, obtaining my specialty degree in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics in 2009, serving also as Teaching Assistant of the Orthodontic Department.

called ‘interceptive orthodontic treatment,’ refers to treatment that begins at an early age, and this ‘first phase of orthodontic treatment’ typically takes place when a young patient has both primary teeth, as well as some adult teeth present. If Dr. Cozzarelli should recommend a Phase I treatment, it is for a good reason, as such a treatment plan that will correct a dental/developmental issue and prevent a current dental or jaw development problem from becoming more severe.

Phase I treatment typically begins between the early ages of 6-10 years, and it is for this reason that any concerns be discussed with the orthodontist by no later than age 7 or 8. In fact, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that all children have an orthodontic evaluation by 7 years of age. Having an early consultation with Dr. Cozzarelli is the best way to ensure that your child’s growth and dental development are optimal.

Why is Phase I typically done? Some com-

mon reasons or indications for Phase I treatment are dental cross-bites, skeletal cross-bites, under bites, excessively overlapping or deep bites, open bites , jaw growth or jaws that are not in proportion to each other, severely protruding teeth, the presence of deleterious thumb, finger or tongue habits, clefts, or severe crowding or spacing of the teeth. Often early treatment turns severe problems that might require future jaw surgery into a more moderate problem that can be treated with braces or orthodontics alone after. PPTOPA Presents “Gypsy” On Stage By Debby Teich

pembroke pines theater of the performing arts

“Gypsy” will be on stage at PPTOPA from February 27 - March 22.

I

f you have always dreamed of seeing a

Broadway show, the Pembroke Pines Theater of the Performing Arts (PPTOPA) can give you a taste of what it is like. It offers top-notch community theater at an affordable price. From February 27 – March 22, the all-time classic of musicals, “Gypsy,” will be on stage for several performances. The score was written by Jule Styne with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. “We deliver outstanding professional caliber performances for a reasonable price,” said Mina Mandel, executive vice-president. The PPTOPA show is directed by Jeffrey Bruce and produced by Keith Kramer. This classic American musical takes place in the dying days of vaudeville and tells the story of Momma Rose, the quintessential stage mother, and her obsessive determination to make her two daughters in to stars no matter the cost. Inspired by the memoirs of the burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee, this entrancing musical boasts some of Broadway’s most famous melodies like “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “Some People,” and “Let Me Entertain You.” PPTOPA is the oldest continuously operating community theater in Broward County. It was founded in 1993 by a group of dedicated individuals who wanted to provide low cost, high quality live theater for the community, as well as opportunities for anyone interested in assisting in the creation of theater.

While technically an “amateur” company, PPTOPA productions routinely feature some of the finest actors and actresses in South Florida. They are teachers, attorneys, doctors, business owners and others who volunteer their time to immerse themselves in something they love. Recent casts have included performers who have headlined productions at Stage Door, Curtain Call, Tamarac, and Actors Theaters. They have been on national Broadway tours, starred in Hollywood films, and written and produced their own plays. Many have been nominated and selected as recipients of South Florida’s Carbonell awards. The chairman of the Board, Alvin Entinm, is the proud recipient of the Eppy award. PPTOPA presents three shows annually and many of them have attracted as many as 4,000 people. With a full orchestra, as well as professional sets, backdrops and costumes, the plays are expensive to produce. The theater raises money through donations and ticket sales, which range from $14 to $24. The next show will be “Mary Poppins” in the summer. Performances are held at the Susan B. Katz Theatre, 17195 Sheridan Street, in the River of Grass Artspark. Friday and Saturday evening performances begin at 8pm. Saturday and Sunday matinees begin at 2pm. For information, to order tickets or to volunteer, call 954-4374884, visit www.pptopa.com or send an email to info@pptopa.org.

A.C. Perry Elementary Students Receive Free Books By Debby Teich

embers of the Rotary Club of M iramar -Pines are helping

students at Annabel C. Perry Elementary School create a home library. For the fifth year, they provided all of the students with a book as a holi-

day gift. Gail Quigley, retired middle school principal, helped initiate the project. “Many of the students have never owned a book before,” said Quigley, who has been a member of the Rotary for 17 years. “If they don’t see reading at home, how are they ever going to develop reading as something one does for pleasure? Reading at home is very different from reading at school, and we need to have kids experience this difference for themselves.” All of the students visited the resource room to select a book of their choice. This year, the Curious George books were a favorite among the kindergarten and first grade students. By the time the students graduate, each one will have brought home a total of five books. Assistant Principal Christopher A. Gentles is very supportive of the project. “This effort is greatly appreciated and is welcomed by our faculty, students, and parents,

because it encourages our students to read more,” said Gentles. “It also allows them to increase their vocabulary skills and further exposes them to more non-fiction books. We appreciate the continuous efforts of the Rotary Club to partner with us. We encourage more stakeholders to join us in preparing these future scholars.” This year, members of the Rotary Club expanded their efforts at A. C. Perry by providing them with weekly bags of food through the Pack-A-Sack Program. Many of the kids in the program receive free lunch and/or breakfast, but have little to eat when school is not in session. To supplement, every Friday they receive bags of food with healthy options that will serve them at least three meals a day with two snacks for two days. During holidays and on long weekends, they receive some extra protein and sides. Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines meets every Thursday, at 12:15pm, at Pembroke Lakes Golf and Racket Club, 10500 Taft Street, in Pembroke Pines. The club has approximately 20 members that are dedicated to Rotary’s motto, “Service above self.” They participate in community service, both locally and internationally, and are committed to eradicating polio. T

he Pembroke Pines Charter School (PPCS) S ystem has already

begun re-enrolling students and filling open slots through a lottery for the 2015-2016 school year. The deadline to apply is March 20. “The students in our system receive private school education without paying private school tuition,” said Jonathan Bonilla, Controller of the City of Pembroke Pines. “Based on FCAT scores and other factors, our elementary and middle schools have earned an ‘A’ rating for 14 consecutive years. In 2014, our high school was recognized by US News & World Report and The Daily Beast as one of the nations’ best high schools.” It is not easy to get a seat at the school. There are approximately 5,925 students in PPCS’ four elementary schools, 3 middle schools and one high school. Approximately 514 students are accepted each year and there are over 15,300 names on the waiting list. The lottery pool is primarily used to fill new kindergarten classes Pembroke Pines Charter High School is one of eight schools in the PPCS system. each year. They will be notified via email of the lottery results. Do current students need to re-enroll? If a student(s) is currently enrolled in a Pembroke Pines Charter School and looking to re-enroll for the new school year, parents should visit www.pinescharter.net. They will be prompted to create an account, after which registration for the existing student can begin. If a child is not re-enrolled, they will be removed from the school roster. What do students do who are already on the lottery wait list? Parents should visit www.pinescharter.net and login using the email currently on the waitlist file. The password will automatically be generated by the system. Parents should check the accuracy of the information already provided in each step of the lottery application to ensure proper placement in the lottery process. Once the final step of the Confirmation Step is reached, they should press the “Send My Application” button. If the child’s lottery application is not resubmitted each year during open enrollment, they will be removed from the waiting list.

Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute

Treating the Nation’s Number-One Disease

by Hobel Florido Chairman South Broward Hospital District d.b.a. Memorial Healthcare System

I

n February, our thoughts naturally turn to hearts. But while we’re celebrating our loved ones with valentines and expressions of affection, we also must remember that our hearts are the source of the country’s leading health challenge. More than 600,000 Americans die from heart disease each year, a condition that affects all racial and ethnic groups — and people of all ages.

That’s why the teams at Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute at Memorial Healthcare System and at the Heart Institute at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital work hard every day to prevent, detect and treat cardiac disease in both children and adults — bringing new procedures, new improvements and new people to offer outstanding, evidence-based, TotalHeart care in South Florida. And 2014 brought some major milestones in cardiac care at Memorial. In September, Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute made Broward history with the county’s first adult heart transplant. A 51-year-old patient suffering from advanced end-stage heart failure underwent six hours of surgery at Memorial Regional Hospital. After three weeks as an inpatient, she was successfully discharged home. Nine days after that first surgery, Memorial’s second adult patient underwent his heart transplant. Both patients are recovering today and enjoying what is truly, for them, a second chance at life. The adult transplants at Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute have followed the tremendous success of the pediatric heart transplant program at the Heart Institute at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Since the program began in 2010, 18 pediatric

Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Heart Institute cardiac team members (left to right): Frank Scholl, MD; Steven Bibevski, MD/PhD; Gerald Lavandosky, MD; Richard Perryman, MD; Edward L. Bove, MD; Kak-Chen Chan, MD; Larry A. Latson, MD; Maryanne Chrisant, MD; Ming-Lon Young, MD, MPH; and Lilliam Valdes-Cruz, MD transplant surgeries have been performed, giving children with congenital heart disease something very special: the chance to live normal, happy, active lives. The transplant program joins the Heart Institute’s other cardiac programs — cardiac surgery, diagnostic cardiac imaging, electrophysiology, high-risk perinatal treatment and interventional catheterization — which, together, offer the full menu of integrative cardiac services for even the tiniest of hearts. Patients and families at the Heart Institute at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital now also can call upon the expertise of internationally renowned pediatric cardiac and thoracic surgeon Edward L. Bove, MD, who joined the cardiac team in April. Dr. Bove has served as professor of surgery at leading educational institutions across the country, and has consulted for numerous healthcare providers nationwide and around the world. He is working collaboratively with the institute’s team of cardiac specialists while continuing as cardiac surgeon at C.S. Mott’s Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and as chair of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Michigan Health System. Today, Memorial is building on 2014’s successes with the addition of more than 20 distinguished cardiologists, who have formed Memorial Division of Cardiac Services to provide an even wider array of cardiac services to adult patients. These employed physicians will continue Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute’s excellent performance in the prevention, detection and treatment of heart disease. As Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the South Broward Hospital District, I can personally attest that Memorial’s adult and pediatric cardiac care programs embody Memorial’s unwavering commitment to providing the full spectrum of TotalHeart care for patients of all ages. And thanks to all the programs at Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute and the Heart Institute at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, patients and families whose hearts need mending no longer need travel outside South Florida to get the high-quality, compassionate care they need.

PPCES-FSU Students Show Their Appreciation for Soldiers in Afghanistan By Debby Teich

A

fter “ meeting” with troops in Afghanistan, students in Kimberly Caballero’s kindergarten class at the City of Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School- FSU Campus now have a greater appreciation for the men and women who are protecting their freedom. It all started with a lesson on Veterans Day, when the students learned about the important and dangerous jobs performed by the United States Military, along with the daily sacrifices endured by the soldiers. “The students learned about the hardships of living in tents in a sandy, hot country and the lack of basic comforts we take for granted,” said Caballero. The students agreed that they wanted to find a way to thank the soldiers. They collected donations of non-perishable foods and personal care items. They also wrote and drew special notes of appreciation for each soldier. They placed everything in a carepackage, which also included a Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary FSU Spirit shirt. Two weeks later, the students and soldiers had an opportunity to “meet” during a FaceTime session. The soldiers thanked the young students for their thoughtfulness and generosity. “This was a true teaching moment when our students ‘met’ the soldiers during the FaceTime session,” said Principal Dr. Lisa Libidinsky. “They used technology to speak and listen to the soldiers. They learned a large lesson and I doubt they will ever take freedom for granted.”

PPCS Central Campus to Host Community Garage Sale By Debby Teich

Many are looking for ways to get rid of clutter, while others are in search of bargains. The City of Pembroke Pines Charter School Central Campus can help with both. On February 7, from 8am to 1pm, it will be hosting the 11th Annual Garage Sale. Proceeds will benefit the school’s technology fund. “Our annual garage sale draws a very large crowd,” said Stephanie Pagan, who is organizing the event. “Come be a vendor or a buyer. We welcome everyone!” The garage sale will be held in the school’s parking lot. Approximately 300 people are expected to attend. The school’s 8th graders will be selling food to help raise money for their trip to Washington DC. Many other high school and middle school students also volunteer to raise money for school groups and clubs. The school typically has over 50 vendors. They will be selling a variety of used items, such as

clothing, shoes, furniture, children’s toys and books. Some of the vendors also sell brand new items, antiques and jewelry. The garage sale usually raises $1,500 - $2,000 for the technology fund. The money is used to purchase updated equipment, such as computers, overhead projectors, tablets, and more. Sandy Krispin has attended the garage sale for the past few years and plans to go again this year. “I always find some great bargains,” said Krispin. “I am always happy when I can purchase a few items and help the school at the same time.” The City of Pembroke Pines Charter School Central Campus is located at 12350 Sheridan Street. The fee for the garage sale spaces, (equivalent to two parking spots) is $40. For information or to purchase a space, call Stephanie Pagan at 954-322-3300 or send an email to spagan@pinescharter.net.

Confronting Heart Rhythm Abnormalities Millions of Americans suffer from heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias), which are conditions that cause the heart to beat too fast, too slow, or irregularly. Many individuals are unaware that they have an irregular heartbeat. Arrhythmias are classified according to the speed of the heart rate, as well as in which part of the heart they develop. Doctors may refer to an arrhythmia as atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, or bradycardia. Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) is the most common type of abnormal heartbeat. Cleveland Clinic Florida cardiologist, Jose Baez-Escudero, MD, specializes in Electrophysiology, which focuses on the prevention and treatment of heart rhythm abnormalities.

What causes AFib?

Jose Baez-Escudero, MD Cleveland Clinic Florida Cardiac Electrophysiologist

There is no one “cause” of AFib, although it is associated with many conditions, including: Most common causes • Hypertension • Coronary artery disease • Heart valve disease

• After heart surgery • Chronic lung disease • Heart failure

• Cardiomyopathy • Congenital heart disease • Pulmonary embolism

• Pericarditis

• Viral infection

•Obstructive sleep apnea • Endurance exercise (e.g. running marathons)

Less common causes • Hyperthyroidism

In at least 10 percent of the cases, no underlying heart disease is found. In these cases, AFib may be related to excessive alcohol or caffeine use, stress, certain drugs, electrolyte or metabolic imbalances, severe infections, or genetic factors. In some cases, no cause can be found.

What are the dangers of AFib? Some people live for years with AFib without any issues; however, if left untreated it can lead to future medical problems. Because the atria are beating rapidly and irregularly, blood does not flow through them as quickly. This makes the blood more likely to clot. If a clot is pumped out of the heart, it can travel to the brain, resulting in a stroke. AFib can also decrease the heart’s pumping ability. The irregularity can make the heart work less efficiently. In addition, AFib that occurs over a long period of time can significantly weaken the heart and lead to heart failure and even death.

What are the symptoms of AFib? You may have AFib without having any symptoms. Often, the initial presentation of AFib is a stroke or a transient ischemic attack (TIA). However, if you have symptoms, they may include: • Heart palpitations

• Lack of energy

•Dizziness

• Chest discomfort

• Shortness of breath

How is AFib treated? The appropriate starting point for treating most patients is medication (blood thinners and antiarrhythmics) and lifestyle changes. Should medications be unsuccessful, physicians may recommend a procedure to regain normal heart rhythm. Types of procedures range from mild electric shocks administered to the chest wall (cardioversion) to catheter ablation, both of which are used to treat AFib. Catheter ablation, which should only be performed by a skilled electrophysiologist, is a procedure aimed at disconnecting the pathway of the abnormal rhythm. Should other options not prevail, surgery may be employed. Most surgical techniques are intended to either block or disconnect the electrical impulse causing the irregular heart beat. The entire heart team at Cleveland Clinic Florida is highly skilled in the most innovative treatments for complex heart conditions. They are also supported by the latest technology and the team of nationally recognized experts dedicated to heart care. Cleveland Clinic Florida is backed by the vast resources of Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, which has been ranked #1 in the nation for heart care 20 years in a row, by U.S. News & World Report.

Winning Defenses to Foreclosure Take Center Stage By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Attorney

I

n the quickly changing landscape of foreclosure cases in

Florida, at least two new defenses are being accepted by courts in favor of homeowners. If these defenses are presented with the appropriate cases to a judge, it should result in a dismissal or final judgment in favor of the borrower. The key is knowing when and how to present these defenses in your case. The first defense is one we have previously mentioned in other articles; statute of limitations. The laws that set deadlines by when lawsuits must be filed are called statutes of limitations. Different deadlines exist for different types of lawsuits, and they vary by state. In Florida, there is a five (5) year statute of limitations to file a foreclosure case. A lender that filed a previous foreclosure case which was dismissed for any reason CANNOT re-file another foreclosure case using the same date of non-payment, if the new lawsuit is filed more than 5 years after the date you stopped paying the mortgage. A key to a judgment in favor of the homeowner in the new action is proving that the default date on the old and new lawsuits is identical.

Another winning defense is based on the language of the notice of default and acceleration sent by the lender prior to the foreclosure. This is also commonly referred to as the “demand letter.” If the demand letter you received prior to a foreclosure indicates that you should “file a court action” in order to assert your defenses to acceleration and default, then it contradicts the language of your mortgage. Florida is a judicial foreclosure state, unlike the majority of states in the U.S. This means that a lender seeking to foreclose in Florida must first sue the homeowner in order to obtain title to the property after non-payment of the mortgage. A homeowner is, therefore, not required to file a court action in Florida to assert defenses to foreclosure. However, many lenders drafted their demand letters incorrectly by using language that is only appropriate to non-judicial states. Florida homeowners in foreclosure can use this mistake to their benefit. The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm are privileged to successfully represent hundreds of homeowners in our community. We have foreclosure defense, loan modification and bankruptcy departments all within the same office, and we will gladly refer you to dozens of satisfied clients so you can be confident in your decision to hire our Firm. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a unique DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our highly experienced legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free personal consultation with Omar Arcia, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com to schedule your appointment online.

ver the past year or so, it has come to my

attention that many couples who are considering a dissolution of marriage from their spouse are attempting to initiate the process in a more civilized manner. Instead of retaining an attorney and filing for the dissolution, they first seek to try and resolve it by reaching an agreement. This process obviously has many possible advantages. It is obviously less costly, since the costs of litigation can be expensive and it usually leaves the couple on much friendlier terms after it is finalized. Most importantly, the couple is able to decide what is best for them and what is best for their children. I am not suggesting that this process can work in all cases, but there certainly seems to be a movement towards this manner of resolution. A couple who wishes to resolve their marriage by negotiation should deal with each other in good faith. If there are hidden assets or attempts to gain an advantage in the negotiation, a fair and equitable resolution will not be reached. In some relationships, one party may be the person in charge of finances and as such may have greater knowledge of the financial position of the parties. It is important to understand that once an agreement is signed, it is binding on both parties and very difficult to set aside. A settlement without all the information and without proper advice can often lead to inequitable results. I suggest that even if it is the intention of both parties to settle their dissolution without litigation, it is still beneficial to retain an attorney to counsel you. Of course, one attorney cannot represent both parties, but getting attorney’s involved to insure that the agreement that is reached is equitable and consistent with Florida Law can be a great benefit. I have been retained by several individuals who are in the process of negotiating a settlement with their spouse. They are seeking my guidance and expertise to assist them in reaching an equitable and lawful agreement. Most individuals do not have knowledge of certain aspects of the law and as such it is to their benefit to have counsel. Once an attorney is retained, a possible settlement can be discussed. Financial information can be required to insure that there is full financial disclosure. After discussing a possible agreement with the client, a proposal can be sent to either opposing counsel or if not represented, the other spouse. This will start the negotiation process without the stress of time limitations and potential litigation. I call the above process Divorce Planning and I suggest anyone contemplating a dissolution should consider this as the starting point. If negotiations fail, the more traditional method will still be available. My office is available and offers free consultations. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

G

ment for toes and feet, which is provided in a private office setting. Proven to be both a safe and effective solution, as well as FDA approved, GenesisPlus treats nail infection (onychomycosis), more commonly known as toenail fungus. Genetic susceptibility, poor health and increasing age are also factors that increase the risk of nail infection. It is important to watch for these common signs:

GenesisPlus passes through the nail and the surrounding tissue with no adverse effects. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment in the fungi, which causes the pigment to heat, and this kills or damages the fungal organism. The treatment can result in your nails growing normally. A single treatment session takes approximately 40 minutes to treat five to ten nails. Most patients show improvement after one treatment and total number of treatments can vary. Most patients describe the procedure as being comfortable with a small hot pinch at the end which resolves quickly. The majority of patients can resume normal activities immediately. Successful treatment results in new nail growth and healthy nails, which may take up to 12 months. Dr. Neal M. Bullock’s office is located at 17013 Pines Boulevard, in Pembroke Pines. Which Filler is Right for You? By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

F

or patients who are concerned about the

appearance of facial lines and wrinkles, non-surgical injections of soft tissue fillers can dramatically enhance your appearance. Of the myriad of available “injectables,” which one is best for you? The commonly used soft tissue filler substances injected into the skin to reduce the size or depth of facial wrinkles are Juvéderm, Restylane, Perlane and Radiesse. Restylane, Juvederm and Perlane are hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. HA is a natural sugar compound found in all living organisms that provides volume and fullness to the skin. When injected, the HA molecules draw in water and cause the tissue underneath to swell. The distention that occurs in the dermis stimulates your body to produce some of its own collagen, further reducing the presence of the facial line. These substances are made of a biodegradable non-animal HA and, unlike collagen, pose no risk of allergic reaction or being rejected by the body. Restylane is ideally suited for the nasolabial folds (from the nose to above the lips), smile lines, hollows beneath the eyes, and sculpting/plumping the lips. Individual results vary, but six months is typical for the results to last. Radiesse is composed of tiny crystals containing calcium hydroxyapatite, a substance found in bone and teeth. It is also manufactured synthetically, so there is no risk of having an allergic reaction and no need for skin testing. Perlane is a larger particle filler and, because of its structure, should be injected deeper into areas like the deeper folds around the mouth and chin. It lasts longer than Restylane - up to 9 to 12 months. Both Restylane and Juvedérm are now available with the local anesthetic, lidocaine, allowing the filler to be injected with minimal discomfort. Radiesse, because of its composition containing hydroxyapatite crystals, increases a process called collagenesis – stimulating your body to produce new collagen in the area where it is injected. This product is usually injected into smile and marionette lines, the pre-jowl sulcus and cheekbone area, adding volume to these areas. Because of the thickness of Radiesse, it should not be used in the lips or areas of superficial lines as it may leave lumps. If a patient feels the HA fillers don’t last, or in patients with very deep folds, Radiesse may be an excellent alternative. A new product, Juvéderm Voluma XC from Allergan Medical, is available for restoring volume to the mid-face area. The typical youthful face has a high cheekbone and soft gentle curve from the cheekbone downward. As the face ages, there is a progressive flattening and loss of volume to this area. Voluma lifts the cheek and restores a more youthful curve to the cheek. What all of these fillers have in common is recovery and downtime. You may experience mild bruising, swelling or redness at the site of the injection. Most patients resume normal activities immediately following the procedure. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. Pembroke Pines Update

Arthritis in the Foot and Ankle

By Mayor Frank C. Ortis

By Dr. Robert Sheinberg, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.

T

he holidays are over and the N ew Year is now

in full swing. It’s a great year to look around and realize the importance of being environmentally conscious. The City has recently adopted a new Green Plan that will be implements this year, as a roadmap for environmentally friendly development. The Green Plan identifies six key areas to achieve the City’s mission and vision of providing a quality of life that will foster the desire to live, work, and raise a family. The six key areas are: Natural Resource & Environmental Design, Energy Efficiency & Conservation, Built Environment and Transportation, Waste Reduction & Recycling, Community Outreach & Empowerment, and Leadership & City Operations. The Green Plan’s mission is to create an environment of efficiency, environmental responsibility and leadership, reduce fossil fuel dependency, and become more holistic within our approach to development and decision-making.

We are also looking beyond our own backyards. Our Commission has voted to support the Protection of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (PAMTA) and the Prevention of Antibiotic Resistance Act (PARA), involving the overuse of antibiotics in factory farms. This contributes to antibiotic resistant bacteria, harming public health. Factory farms use 80% of antibiotics on the market in the U.S. to prevent and treat illness, and increase livestock growth. Immune-compromised patients and the elderly are affected. Being environmentally conscious means taking action and we are doing that. This is also the time of year that our Pembroke Pines Charter School System’s admissions lottery is underway, now through March 20. Students currently in our system have been notified to re-enroll, those on the waiting list were asked for updates and those who wish to enter the lottery should visit www.pinescharter.net. In the upcoming months, I will be hosting two fundraisers for the Pembroke Pines Charter School Foundation. They are “Can We Make a Deal” on Friday, February 22, at 7pm at the River of Grass Theater, 17195 Sheridan Street, and the “13th Annual Pembroke Pines Charter School Golf Tournament” on Friday, March 27, at the Pembroke Lakes Country Club, 10500 Taft Street in Pembroke Pines. Please visit our website for additional information. There will also be my annual State of the City Address on Monday, February 23, when we’ll be discussing various issues along with a glimpse of the future. The meeting will be held at 7pm at City Hall in the Commission Chambers, 10100 Pines Boulevard, in Pembroke Pines. I look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting and sharing ideas. 2015 will be a great year for our City. Please stay active, get to know us more through our website at www.ppines.com, on Facebook at City of Pembroke Pines, Florida Government, through our newspaper City Connect, and our TV programming on OCTV. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-4356505, or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com.

A

ccording to the Centers for D isease Control ,

an estimated 52.5 million American adults suffer from some form of arthritis. As our nation’s population ages, the prevalence is expected to increase. Here are the answers to commonly asked questions about arthritis in the foot and ankle: #1. What is arthritis? Arthritis is a degenerative process that may take place in any joint in the body. Cartilage which allows the joint to move smoothly starts to wear down. Bone spurring and bone cysts may occur as the joint wears abnormally. The joint starts to move out of its normal position creating pain with movement. A loss of joint movement also follows the arthritic process. #2. What causes arthritis? Most often arthritis is caused from an injury to the joint. The injury may occur as a child and it may manifest itself later in life. A bad injury to a bone or joint (fracture) may start the development of arthritis almost immediately after the injury. Arthritis is very common when a bone fractures into the joint. Malpositioning of the joint will cause abnormal wear and tear. It may also be seen in people who are excessively flatfooted, knock-kneed or bowlegged. It is also very common in people with bunions. #3. Will the arthritis get worse over time? In almost all cases arthritis in any joint will worsen. The joint will wear abnormally causing pain, limited motion of the joint, bone spurring and swelling around the joint. The joint will become excessively stiff causing pain with many activities. Difficulty with certain shoes may also be present. #4. Will medication help to lessen the pain and joint deformity? Oral medication will help to diminish some discomfort, but it will not change the degenerative process, which takes place slowly over time. #5. Will physical therapy be of any benefit? Physical therapy will help retain some movement in the joint and keep swelling to a minimum. It may also help to improve muscle strength. Over the long term it will be of limited benefit as the degenerative process will continue to take place. #6. Can surgery be of benefit if the arthritis is found early? Many procedures can be performed to assist in treating the degenerative process if found early. After a thorough history and physical examination x-rays are taken to assess the degree of joint damage. Occasionally if the damage is mild an arthroscopic or small open procedure may be necessary to remove abnormal bone and soft tissue. Cartilage that is lifted away from the bone is removed to allow the joint to function more normally. If a joint is out of position removing bone spurs and soft tissue may be of limited benefit. In this case the bones may need to be repositioned to allow more normal joint alignment. #7. Can anything be done if the arthritis is severe? In some cases the arthritis is severe and joint replacement or joint fusions may be necessary. Joint replacements are an excellent option and may be necessary in older, more sedentary patients. Fusing the joint that is arthritic and not allowing it to move any longer is also an excellent approach to the treatment of arthritis. This eliminates any painful movement allowing a return to work and activities of daily living with minimal modifications. Some joints can be fused and still allow an athlete to resume professional sports #8. Will orthotics be of any benefit? Orthotics will assist in maintaining normal joint position. Support of the foot and placement of the foot in better anatomical position may redistribute stress more evenly in the foot and ankle region. This may help to lessen pain and possibly delay the need for surgery. They provide great benefits in people with big toe joint (turf toe, bunions) problems. Orthotics are also very useful in patients who are flatfooted, knock-kneed, bowlegged and in those with lower back pain.
