Spring Has Arrived
S
pring is traditionally the welcome sign of
renewal and progress all around the world. For our neighbors to the north, it means the end (hopefully) of another brutal winter packed with powerful blizzards that blanketed much of the midwest and northeast. Even as I am writing this editorial, the Boston area is still digging out from another snow-loaded blizzard, and not the kind you get at Dairy Queen. Here in South Florida, we’re fortunate to live the perpetual “Spring Break.” People from all over the country, and world, flock to Florida to take refuge from the cold and enjoy our mild temperatures, calming sea breezes and white sandy beaches. But, you don’t need to be a snowbird or tourist to enjoy all that Florida has to offer. With Spring Break later this month, why not spend some time enjoying the many splendors of the Sunshine State? Where else can you see endangered manatees, pre-historic alligators and pretty pink flamingos all in the same day? Where else can you relax and sunbathe during the day and then dance the night away on South Beach? Where else can you go flats fishing on a secluded sand bar and then pull up for a delicious bite to eat at one of the many restaurants along the Intracoastal Waterway? Only here in South Florida. On this happy note, let’s take some time to enjoy all that Florida has to offer and have some FUN! Sincerely, Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Pembroke Pines residents have many ways to get involved. The City of Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department and Pembroke Pines Police Department will hold the 3rd Annual Bicycle Rodeo, on March 7, from 8:30am to 11:30am, at Towngate Park. There will be a helmet check, as well as fittings and bicycle inspections. Kids will also learn some theft prevention tips. Alligator’s Cycling will be on hand to assist with bike repairs. At the conclusion of the rodeo, participants will receive a certificate of completion. Throughout the event, participants will enjoy the sounds of JS Entertainment. Palacios says that they hope to accomplish many things by instructing young riders. They want to empower kids to use their bikes for transportation; promote exercise and healthy lifestyles; generate interest in safe, recreational bicycling; inform participants of local bicycling resources, bicycle routes, organizations and events; educate youth on the importance of sharing the road as bicyclists and future motorists; reduce the collision rates of young bicyclists; improve children’s health, fitness, vitality, and overall well-being; and much more. T
o help celebrate the City ’ s 55th
birthday, Pembroke Pines children are invited to get creative and enter the Masquerade in the Pines Art Contest. Participants will decorate, paint and or color the same mask pattern for the chance to win some great prizes. The deadline to submit entries is 4pm on March 28. The art contest ties in with this year’s Pines Day 55th Birthday theme, “Masquerade in the Pines.” It is open to all City of Pembroke Pines children in pre-K, elementary, middle and high school. Participants can be as creative as they like when decorating the mask pattern in four age appropriate categories. The mask, entry form and contest details can be found at www.ppines.com/ recreationandculturalarts. “As you paint, color, or bedazzle, don’t forget the theme… Mardi Gras!” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. In each category, winners will be selected for first, second and third place, as well as honorable mention. Some of the prizes include a gift basket with art supplies, category winner certificate and placement winner ribbon. All of the entries will become property of the City of Pembroke Pines and not returned to the artist. The winning entries will be displayed during
the Pines Day Celebration, which will be held on April 18 at the Pines Recreation Center, 7400 Pines Boulevard. The winners will receive their prizes at the Celebration, when they will be honored during an awards ceremony on the Children’s Stage at 4:45pm, just prior to the annual cutting of the birthday cake. Eight-year-old Emily Robinson plans to participate in the contest. “I will paint the mask and decorate it with glitter and sequins,” said Emily. “I really hope I win.” Seven-year-old Katie Haimes has a different plan. “I will use pink and purple markers to decorate it,” said Katie. “Those are my favorite colors.” All entries must be received at the City of Pembroke Pines Studio 18, located at 1101 Poinciana Drive or Price Park, located at 901 NW 208th Avenue, no later than 4pm on March 28, 2015. Studio 18 is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30am-5pm and Saturdays, from 10am-2pm. Price Park is open Monday through Friday, from 1pm-9pm and Saturdays and Sundays, from 9am-6pm. Each student’s name, age, grade and school must be attached to the back side of the mask. Application and mask pattern can be found online at www.ppines.com/recreationandculturalarts. Mayor Frank C. Ortis Presents the 13th Annual Pembroke Pines Charter School Golf Tournament By Debby Teich
O
n March 27, Mayor Frank C. O rtis ,
along with title sponsor Waste Pro, will present the 13th Annual Pembroke Pines Charter School Golf Tournament at Pembroke Lakes Country Club. It includes an 18-hole tournament, contests, lunch, dinner, prizes, awards and more. All funds raised will benefit the Pembroke Pines Charter School System. The popular event usually sells out quickly. The Pembroke Pines Charter School System was created and built by the City of Pembroke Pines. It is home to four elementary schools, three middle schools and one high school housed on five educational campuses throughout the City. Since Mayor Ortis established the tournament, it has raised over $1 million dollars for the school system. This year, he is hoping to raise $100,000. “With your help we can build on our success,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “Several years ago, the City of Pembroke Pines boldly moved forward for better education. In a very short period of time, we have created the nation’s largest (and best) municipally-run charter school program. The charter school program has capacity for 5,500 students. We are confident proceeds from this event will find a way to enhance each student’s education.” Golfers can enjoy the green for $250 per player or $1,000 per foursome. Registration begins at 10:30am
at the Pembroke Lakes Country Club. Following registration, golfers can participate in a putting contest, open driving range and enjoy some lunch. The shot-gun tee off is at 12:30pm. The four-man scramble teams are eligible to win a variety of skill and hole contests. The fun continues at 5:30pm with a cocktail reception, deluxe buffet, prizes, and the popular auction. Several other fundraisers are planned in the next few months to benefit the Pembroke Pines Charter School System. They include: ▸▸ Taste of Pines – On April 16, from 6-9pm, area residents are invited to enjoy selections of wine, samples of cuisine from local restaurants and live entertainment. It will be held at the Southwest Point Community Center. Tickets are $25 per person and are available at all Charter School locations. ▸▸ 5K Run – On April 26, run, walk or skip your way through the streets of Pembroke Pines during the 5K race. It is not too soon to begin organizing a team. ▸▸ Havana Nights – On May 2, from 6:30-11pm, don’t miss the Annual Charity Dinner Gala at the SWFP Community Center. Tickets are $40pp.
Mayor Frank C. Ortis

Pines Fair Kicks Off 55th Birthday Celebration By Debby Teich
W
hen Pembroke Pines was incorporated in 1960, it was less
than a square mile. It is now home to over 160,000 residents, making it the second most populous city in Broward County and the 11th in Florida. The Pines Fair is the first of many events planned to celebrate the City of Pembroke Pines’ 55th birthday. It will be held from March 26-April 5 at a new location - the Howard Forman Center, located on University Drive and north of Pembroke Road. There will be more than 30 midway rides, including a Ferris wheel, roller coasters and more. The hours are as follows: Monday-Friday, from 5pm-10pm, and Saturday/Sunday, from noon to 11pm. Proceeds from the fair will benefit the Pembroke Pines Charter School System. “It is a wonderful way for Charter School families, as well as all Pembroke Pines families, to come together to celebrate,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator. Some other events planned for the birthday celebration include: ▸▸ Taste of Pines, April 16. From 6pm-9pm, sample cuisine from approximately 37 local restaurants, as well as wine, specialty drinks and desserts, as you relax to live music. Tickets are on sale at all Pembroke Pines Charter Schools. $25 for Adults and $5 for children. Proceeds will benefit the Pembroke Pines Charter School Foundation.

▸▸ Pines Day, April 18. Stroller Parade – At 10:30am, decorate a wagon or stroller and join in the inaugural stroller parade. First 50 participants win a prize. Registration required. ▸▸ Parade. At 11am, don’t miss the excitement as over 90 local groups and organizations march in the parade alongside the floats. It has been five years since the City of Pembroke Pines has sponsored this parade. Kristi Krueger and MJ Acosta will emcee the event. ▸▸ Festival. From 12noon – 9pm, there will be non-stop action at the festival, including: three stages of entertainment, Royal Court Competition, Kids Konnection Expo, food booths, bounce houses, masquerade contest, concert, cake cutting ceremony, and more. ▸▸ Fireworks. At 9pm, end the evening with a spectacular fireworks show. “There will be something for everyone at Pines Day,” said Novo, who has worked for the City of Pembroke Pines for the past 21 years. “I have seen Pembroke Pines evolve throughout the years. I remember when there was only one flashing light at the end of Flamingo Road. Although the city has experienced tremendous growth, it still has the same hometown feeling. Pines Day is a wonderful time for all of the residents to come together and celebrate.” For information, visit www.ppines.com.

City of Pembroke Pines Glass Gallery Presents “Visual Concerto” Exhibit By Debby Teich
T
he City of Pembroke Pines G lass Gallery, under the direction
of City of Pembroke Pines Art Curator Benoit Menasche, presents “Visual Concerto.” The colorful exhibit includes everything from Realism to Modern. It will be open to the public from March 11 to May 4, at the Glass Gallery in the Pembroke Pines City Hall. Approximately 30 artists from the Weston Art Guild will display over 100 pieces, including mixed media, oil, sculptures, glass, pen and ink, and more. Most of the artists are professionals. This is the fourth time that the Weston Art Guild will be exhibiting their work in Pembroke Pines. Each time, they bring all new pieces. “The Weston Art Guild continues to present us with new artwork and ideas,” said Menasche. “They are an exceptionally talented group of artists. Although they are all different, they share the same passion for their work.” The Weston Art Guild was formed in 2005 with the purpose of creating a cultural atmosphere by educating the public on the importance of all forms of visual arts. Today, the Weston Art Guild is composed of painters, sculptors, jewelry makers, and more. Members meet each month to exchange information and ideas. Some of the Weston Art Guild artists that will be exhibiting include: Joyce Albrecht, Gloriela Araujo, Becky Black, Phyllis Casper, Larry Eiglarsh, Gerald Goldberg, Clara Hada, JoAnn Heyer, Chuck Langjahr, Sandor Magnes, Ariel Maldonado, Lori Murphy, Judy Nunno, Jane Pakula, Sheldon Sachnoff, Carol Thaw, Maria Torres, Deborah Wolford and Rasma Yaffa. On March 17, from 7pm-9pm, the public is invited to a free opening reception at the Glass Gallery. There will be entertainment, light hors d’oeuvres, and complimentary wine provided by the Pembroke Pines Art and Culture Advisory Board. Guests can also mingle with the artists. “It is a great opportunity to talk to the artists to find out more about them,” said Menasche. “You can find out what inspires them; how they approach the creative process and more.”

Broward College Students Create Reef Balls and Educate Public By Debby Teich
S
ince 1982, B roward County has cre -
ated over 112 artificial reefs off its shores. Each semester, students in marine science classes at Broward College help restore ailing coral reefs by building small scale reef balls for deployment in Biscayne Bay. As part of a Marine Science Education ServiceLearning Project, they recently had an opportunity to construct concrete reef balls on a larger scale. They also presented an educational program to increase community awareness of coral reefs, as well as the effects that humans have on the environment. “Florida Waterways are a very important and integral part of life,” said Elena Rae Schultz, Director of Service-Learning at Broward College. “The natural reefs in the South Florida waters are deteriorating rapidly. It is only through the combination of human actions, both direct (creation of artificial reefs) and indirect (water conservation, waterway pollution mitigation, reduction in fertilizer use, awareness of storm water runoff), that we can help conserve this valuable resource.” With funding from the Florida Legislature, Broward College, in partnership with the MLK Day of Service Advisory Board, was the primary sponsor of the event. Additional sponsors included: Reef Ball Foundation, Reef Innovations, Operation Reef Ball, Kids Ecology Corps, SuperMix Concrete, Marissa Fallenbaum (who was working on her Girl Scout Gold Award project) and South Plantation High School Environmental Magnet students. Over 130 people attended the two-part event, including Broward college servicelearning students, high school students, and community members. There were a variety of PowerPoint presentations and hands-on activities to increase community awareness of how the actions of humans onshore affect coral reefs and what we as citizens can do to promote coral reef conservation and protection. Some of them included: ▸ Edible Reef – Model a coral reef using Jello. ▸ Coral Reef Drawing – Draw a picture of what you think a coral reef is upon entering the event and add to the picture after completing the activities.

▸ Create Reef Animals – Using craft materials (paper plates, googley eyes, foam sheets, etc,), create fish, corals, and other marine life. ▸ Predators and Invasives – Using bubbles, examine the fragile nature of corals and learn how so many are destroyed. ▸ Sea Turtle Conservation – Learn about issues and human responsibilities, as well as actions needed. ▸ Water Pollution/ Storm Drain Runoff – Watch a demonstration of the effects of land based human actions on the ocean and coral reefs. “The hands-on activities allowed each participant to become involved, as they joined in the experience and explored,” said Schultz. “Participants were challenged to identify how to continue to protect our environment every day. The small changes we make in our daily lives can make an enormous impact on the environment.” In another part of the event, approximately 30 Broward College marine science students worked under the direction of Reef Innovations with Operation Reef Ball to construct molds for reef balls. They created nine reef balls of varying sizes and weights that ranged from the Oyster Ball (1.5 ft. x 1 ft., 50 lbs.) to the Ultra Ball (5.5 ft. x 4.3 ft., 3,500 lbs.). They followed a lengthy process for each one. They started by attaching the large mold pieces and installing inflated balls and buoys to create openings in the reef ball. Next, they sprayed the inside of the mold with sugar water to create a rough skin on the outside of the reef ball. Then, they used mallets on the side of the mold to remove air pockets as concrete was poured into the molds. Twenty-four hours after the pour, the students assisted in the removal of the molds and rinsed the outside to expose the rough surface for the corals to attach. “The reef ball imitates the appearance and function of natural coral reefs,” said Schultz. “Openings make an ideal living environment for a great variety of marine species. The created reef balls will provide a stable environment for corals and other marine life.” A few weeks later, the students deployed the reef balls under the direction of Reef Innovations and Miami-Dade DERM. The smaller reef balls were deployed in Biscayne Bay in an artificial reef site off Oleta River State Park. Using the buoys from the construction, the smaller reef balls were floated out to the site. The air was slowly let out of the buoys, allowing the balls to lower to the location on the bottom. The larger reef balls were deployed offshore using a boat with a crane that lowered them into the water. “This service-learning project has provided Broward College students the opportunity to serve in their community, while reinforcing their academics,” said Schultz. “The hands-on experience for the students allows them to see how they can make a difference - motivating them to become active, engaged, educated citizens. This project has been a fantastic collaboration of multiple organizations working together to help restore our environment. The dedication of all involved has led to the successful deployment of artificial reefs and increased awareness of the community to the issues surrounding the fragile ecosystem.”

Flanagan High School to Host Falcon Fest Flea Market By Debby Teich

any are looking
for ways to get rid of clutter, while others are in search of bargains. Charles W. Flanagan High School can help with both. On March 7, from 7am to 1pm, it will be hosting the 7th Annual Flea Market. Proceeds will be used to help send members of the school’s Student Government Association There were plenty of bargains at last year’s flea market. (SGA) to a leadership conference. “The Flea Market is a great opportunity to find something interesting, make some extra money, and contribute to high school students attending a prestigious conference that pertains to leadership development,” said D’King James, SGA treasurer. The Falcon Fest Flea Market started as a fundraiser for the senior class. For the past seven years, it has been run by SGA. Fifty vendors typically participate in the event, which is held in the school’s parking lot. They offer great deals on books, clothing, DVDs, small furniture, kitchen items, shoes and much more. In the past, they have even sold chandeliers, street lights, car emblems and other unique items. The Student Government serves as the liaison between the student body and the administration. It promotes leadership, initiative and self-motivation. Students work closely with other school organizations, clubs, and teams. They foster school spirit by organizing a variety of activities, such as Homecoming, Pep Rallies, and Freshman Invasion. They participate in community service projects through fundraisers for Humane Society, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, ALS Association

and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Members also participate in Kefford’s Crew, where they collaborate with peer counseling to mentor other students who need someone to talk to about grades, social life, and other issues. James says that the SGA is hoping that the flea market will raise approximately $2,500, which will be used to send students to the National Association of Student Councils. The conference promotes student council as the voice of the student body and encourages students to become involved in school, community leadership and decision making. Typically, eight to ten Flanagan students attend at a cost of $250 each. “The leadership conference is important because it provides students with an opportunity to hone their skills as leaders and provides skills that will have a positive effect on the jobs they acquire later in life,” said James. Put Your Best Face Forward By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.
A
s a person ages , there is a loss of collagen
and elastin in the skin, alteration in the skeletal framework, and a progressive loss, or atrophy, of facial fat. These alterations in skin, fat, and bone result in distinctive changes in facial appearance. Increased skin laxity, prominence of the nasolabial folds and jowls, increased depth and number of facial wrinkles, characterize the aging face. A youthful face is fuller, more angular, with high cheekbones, a distinctive jawline, and smooth skin. In order to achieve the optimal result in facial rejuvenation, it is necessary to address all the underlying elements that affect the appearance of the face. There are four areas to treat – skin surface, laxity or excess skin, soft tissue support structure, and biochemical composition within the skin. The first is the skin surface – fine lines, wrinkles, pore size, and skin texture. This area is rejuvenated through typical skin treatments such as fractional laser therapy, chemical peels and microdermabrasion and Botox® and Dysport®, as well as topical creams, such as Retin A, glycolic based products, and moisturizers, such as Kinerase®. These products help diminish fine facial wrinkles and improve pigmentation. The second area to address is skin looseness or laxity, as well as skin excess. When redundant skin creates deep folds and jowls, the excess skin should be removed. There are multiple face-lifting techniques. The specific procedure should be adapted to the individual patient’s anatomy through a minifacelift or full facelift, or modification of these procedures such as an “S” lift or lifestyle lift. Thirdly, the soft tissue structure that supports the skin may need to be enhanced. Fat grafting adds volume that is lost as a result of atrophy of facial fat and descent of supporting soft tissue. During the early stages of facial aging, soft tissue fillers, such as Juvederm®, Restylane®, and Radiesse® can accomplish this as well. Finally, an area that most surgeons and patients neglect is the skin, the organ. The biochemical makeup of the skin is affected by what we eat and put into our bodies. Omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants aid in restoring a healthy appearance to the skin. Consuming foods high in essential fatty acids, vitamins A, C, D, and E and antioxidants, such as Goji and Acai berries make the skin appear more youthful. Avoiding sun exposure, and not smoking also improves skin appearance. To summarize, as we age, the alterations that take place resulting in an aging appearance are multifactorial. Because of this, treatment options must also address all these components – the skin surface, skin excess, structural support, and the skin composition. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care. any clients who are considering their
estate planning for the first time become overwhelmed by the vocabulary involved in the process and the many different planning options available to them. In particular, clients are often confused about the difference between a will and a trust, and, more importantly, which option is best for them. I hope that the brief discussion below will help to clarify some of these questions for you, so that you can be all the more prepared for your first meeting with an estate planning attorney.
Q: What is a will? A: A will is simply a document that provides your instructions regarding what should be done with your assets after you die. In the will, you will name the person who you wish to be in charge of managing the distribution of your assets, paying your debts, and ensuring that all of the wishes contained in your will are realized. Q: What is a Revocable Living Trust? A: A Revocable Living Trust is a document that creates a legal relationship in which one person, the trustee, holds property for the benefit of another, the beneficiary. The person who sets up the trust, the settlor, may also be named as trustee until he or she dies. Think of the trust as a big box. You, as the settlor, would place all of the assets that you wish to protect into the box. Property such as real estate, stocks, bonds, and personal possessions may all be placed “inside” the box. The trustee then protects the contents of the box and distributes the contents in accordance with the instructions that you laid out in the trust document. Your trust may be set up for your own benefit during your lifetime, and then for the benefit of another after your death. As the name implies, this type of trust may be amended or revoked during your lifetime. Q: Which option is best? A: There is no simple answer to this question, as there are many different factors to consider when choosing a will over a trust. The decision is a personal one that must be carefully considered with the assistance of an estate planning attorney in order to meet your needs. A will is normally less costly to set up, but it must go through a legal process called “probate.” Probate can sometimes be both lengthy and costly, and may also result in legal battles between family members. Your assets cannot be distributed until after the probate process is complete. Further, during the probate process, your debts, which may include an estate tax, will be paid before your assets are distributed to your heirs. This, quite naturally, diminishes the amount of your heirs’ inheritance. Finally, your will becomes a public record once it is filed with the probate court. A trust, on the other hand, is usually more complicated and more expensive to set up and requires constant and meticulous management for the life of the trust. Unlike a will, however, the trust would avoid the probate process. This means that your assets would be distributed to your beneficiaries immediately, unless your trust instructs otherwise. Another advantage of a trust is that it allows you to “rule from the grave” by including provisions requiring performance of certain tasks (such as graduating from college or attaining a certain age) before the assets can be distributed to a particular beneficiary. Further, trusts can be used to plan for possible incapacity due to illness, and can be used to make sure that your bills are paid and that your family is provided for. Additionally, trusts may be utilized as part of a tax and financial plan that will help to lessen the impact of estate taxes on the distributions that your beneficiaries stand to receive. Finally, unlike wills, trusts are private and do not become part of the public record. As you can see, choosing between a will and a trust is not a simple task. Be sure to consult with your estate planning attorney and financial planner to make sure you fully-understand these and other estate planning tools. Madeleine Q. Are You Having Trouble Selling Your Home?
Ankle Pain That Does Not Go Away After Injury
By Patrick Simm
By Dr. Robert Sheinberg
S
o, you have your home for sale , but it ’ s not
selling? We are approaching the next cycle in real estate, leading towards a balanced market whereby neither buyers nor sellers have the “edge.” If your home is listed for sale and not selling, there is reason for concern. A home doesn’t sell due to an array of circumstances, several of which you can manage successfully. Some of the most important challenges that can lead to this are: Price it correctly at fair market value from the beginning. If you failed to price it appropriately when you initially listed the property, more likely than not your home will have interest from buyers, but fail to attract any offers. The “why” for this is pretty simple…..would you buy an overpriced home if you were the buyer? Even if the price is lowered after the home is listed for a period of time, you will have lost the momentum of the initial listing period and the majority of buyers will assume that there is something wrong with the home. Pricing your home at fair market value from the onset is the best decision you will ever make in the process! The condition of the home is a key ingredient. Sellers should look at the home from a potential buyer’s perspective. Buyers have high expectations; therefore, the home needs to be consistently clean, neat, de-cluttered and depersonalized. This will help the buyers visualize themselves living there. Your home curb appeal is of the utmost importance; therefore, a trim, yet cozy appearance, and careful landscaping will give the buyer a warm sense of wanting to enter the home to begin with. Marketing matters! Oh does it matter! The power of being able to sell is simply the Multiple Listing Service and the hundreds of websites that your home is syndicated to from this. Ninety-seven percent of buyers first go online to look at properties to begin their search. Therefore, it’s important that your home as multiple professionally looking photos that will make it look as alluring as possible. A home listed without photos or very few photos is unlikely to draw considerable interest. Hire the right Realtor for the job of selling your home. Selling your home is one of, if not, the largest financial decisions you will ever make in your lifetime. Hire a Realtor who is knowledgeable about the area. Your success is dependent on this. A full-time, seasoned Realtor with experience that has seen the ups and downs of the market brings the necessary knowledge and expertise to the potential sale. Experienced seasoned agents also tend to know and have relationships with other Realtors and industry professionals, which results in smoother transactions. T
he ankle is a hinged joint made of three bones;
tibia, fibula and the talus. These bones are bound together by ligaments. Tendons cross over the ankle creating movement in multiple directions. Injuries to the ankle can occur to the bones, ligaments, tendons or ankle joint. These injuries can occur from falls, twisting injuries, direct blows or from motor vehicle accidents. Diagnosis of injuries to the ankle is made by a thorough history of the injury and a physical examination. X-rays and occasionally CT scans and MRIs may be ordered in order to fully evaluate the extent of injury. Treatment depends on the type of injury. Simple injuries may require only rest or physical therapy. Moderate injuries may require immobilization in a cast. Some injuries may require surgery, whether open or arthroscopically, to correct the problem Occasionally, patients will continue to experience pain. Pain may occur from many sources. 1 – Synovial Impingement: Due to a sprain, the joint lining (synovium) becomes chronically inflamed causing persistent stiffness, swelling and pain. If physical therapy does not help, arthroscopic debridement will usually provide complete recovery. Prognosis is excellent. 2 – Instability of Ligaments: The ligaments may become disrupted from the injury. If they heal in a lengthened or stretched position, patients will complain that the ankle gives out easily. Surgery may be necessary to shorten the ligaments, thus providing stability. Prognosis is excellent. 3 – Arthritis or Bone Spurring: This may develop if a fracture occurs into the joint. X-rays may show perfect reduction, but if the cartilage has been injured, arthritis may develop. Treatment may include arthroscopic or open removal of the spurs and damaged cartilage. Prognosis is good. Long term recurrence is common, especially if arthritis has developed. 4 – Tendon Injury: Tendons connect muscles to bones and can stretch or tear following injury. Swelling, weakness or clicking may be persistent and cause pain with any activity. MRIs may be necessary to fully evaluate the tendon injury. Physical therapy and medication may provide some benefits. If a tendon is torn, surgery may be necessary to fully restore mobility and relieve pain. 5 – Cartilage Breaks: Cartilage covers bones and allows them to move smoothly without pain. Small fractures to them will cause stiffness, pain and swelling to the joint that won’t go away. MRIs will help evaluate the injury and arthroscopy will help to treat the problems in the joint. Some of these complications may occur by themselves or in combination with others. Nothing replaces a thorough history and physical examination. Ankle injuries may cause long-term disability. Proper, immediate attention to these injuries by an experienced physician will offer the best chance for full recovery. All of these injuries may be treated with success. People should not have to live with chronic pain syndromes to the foot, ankle or leg. Advanced Treatment for Cancer-causing Polyps Without Surgery Removing polyps from the colon is standard practice to reduce the chance of colorectal cancer. But for polyps that are large or hard to reach, their removal during a colonoscopy is a challenge.
Tolga Erim, DO Cleveland Clinic Florida Gastroenterologist
Though many patients have traditional surgery for these complex polyps, Cleveland Clinic Florida gastroenterologists are using new
tools and techniques that require no stitches or long recovery times. It’s a procedure called endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). An endoscope is a thin flexible tube with a tiny camera, to which small surgery tools are attached. Mucosal refers to the tissue of the colon and resection means surgical removal. “Many patients and physicians may not be familiar with EMR or do not have access to it locally, so these polyps are often removed using traditional surgery,” says Cleveland Clinic gastroenterologist Tolga Erim, DO who specializes in advanced endoscopy
World class neurology and cancer care in South Florida. Our new center offers leading expertise and the most advanced treatments.
techniques. “But EMR gives patients another choice. With experienced specialists performing it, there is less risk of bleeding, and a much shorter recovery time compared to surgery.” During the procedure, Cleveland Clinic Florida physicians employ several standardized procedures to reach and remove the polyps. “For example, by injecting saline into the tissue, they can raise the polyp in order to resect it completely. In addition, newer snares, or metal loops, and tools to cauterize (seal) blood vessels make removal very efficient,” Dr. Erim says. According to reports from the National Institutes of Health, patients with large or complex polyps should be referred for EMR to a specialty facility such as Cleveland Clinic Florida, so they can avoid unnecessary surgery. “We’ve treated patients from as far away as South America,” Dr. Erim says. “Because of our expertise and experience with EMR, this is the appropriate place to come for hard-totreat polyps. We’ve become a referral center for it.” Once the procedure is over, the patient should avoid strenuous activity for a few days although you can continue on with regular day to day activities the next day. The patient’s diet will need to be altered so that they eat soft foods and drink fluids for the days following the procedure. After about six to twelve months, a follow-up appointment is needed to make sure the entire lesion was removed. After a followup procedure with the specialist who performed the EMR, patients can return to their regular physician.

Reasons Why You Should Not Try A Do-It-Yourself Foreclosure Defense By Omar J. Arcia Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Attorney
W
e have counseled hundreds of clients through the years ,
and the most significant mistake homeowners make when faced with a foreclosure case is that they wait until the very last minute to contact an experienced attorney. Many homeowners think that just like fixing a leaky faucet at home, they can defend themselves in a foreclosure proceeding to save their home. Here are several reasons why you should not try a do-it-yourself foreclosure defense. Florida’s “Fair” Foreclosure Act (Florida Statutes s.702) makes it far easier for lenders to get families out of their homes. Under current Florida law, the burden has now been placed on homeowners to prove that the bank does not have the right to foreclose, instead of the bank being required to prove that they are entitled to a foreclosure. Homeowners now have 20 days to organize their evidence and present that proof to the court, whereas before they had years to develop their case against the lender. Some of the legal defenses to a foreclosure are highly technical, changing, and require specialized knowledge.
Main Office: 3350 SW 148th Ave. Suite 405, Miramar, FL 33027 Available for Consultation: Miami • Orlando
Florida leads the nation not only in completed foreclosures from 2013 to 2014 (according to CoreLogic), but also has the largest backlog of foreclosure cases. The courts are doing everything within their power (and beyond) to “flush” foreclosure cases out of the court system as quickly as possible. The “rocket docket” system implemented in many jurisdictions to dispose of hundreds of foreclosure cases daily is just one means of accomplishing this goal. Courts are also randomly setting cases for trial that are not ready for trial. Unsuspecting homeowners that are unprepared to defend their case, or that fail to seek a timely continuance of trial, find themselves forced to accept a final judgment of foreclosure, and a foreclosure auction within just 35 days. Preparation is the most important step you can take right now. Your timeframe to save your home has been SHORTENED by our legislature. Organize all your closing documents, mortgage statements, and every communication you have had with the bank, and contact the experienced attorneys at The Arcia Law Firm. This way you can work with an attorney to ensure that your rights are defended quickly and fully. We will work with your individual financial needs to ensure that you are able to afford legal representation throughout this difficult process. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a consumer DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail. The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm are privileged to successfully represent hundreds of homeowners in our community. We have foreclosure defense, loan modification and bankruptcy departments all in the same office. We will gladly refer you to our satisfied clients so you can be confident in your decision to hire our Firm. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free personal consultation with Omar Arcia, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com to schedule your appointment online.

Pembroke Pines Update By Mayor Frank C. Ortis
M
any cities , including Pembroke Pines , have
launched “go green” programs that include encouraging residents to pay utility bills via electronic payments. Paperless payments not only save time, they also save money. And best of all, it helps the environment. I’d like to remind everyone that the City of Pembroke Pines offers residents the opportunity to pay utility bills in various “green” ways. The easiest and most convenient method of paying a utility bill is by Automated Funds Transfer (AFT). No charges are incurred for paying utility bills using AFT, which allows customers to have their monthly City of Pembroke Pines utility bill payments automatically withdrawn from their bank account. You set up your AFT account once, and you do not have to worry about paying your utility bill on time anymore. Residents also have the option to pay online with a credit/debit card or E-check. Making payments online is actually as safe and dependable as paying by mail. We have implemented a state-of-the-art secure network for processing payments. This system uses cutting-edge encryption technology to ensure that only those approved by you can have access to your confidential information. For more information on how you can save time, money and the environment when you pay your utility bill, please visit www.ppines.com or call 954-450-6900. Please also mark your calendars for some exciting events we have planned: ▸▸ The 17th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival in the Pines is being held March 14 – 15, from 10am to 5pm, at The Shops at Pembroke Gardens, located at 527 SW 145 Terrace. This two-day, family-friendly, cultural event is presented by the City’s Recreation and Cultural Arts Department, the Pembroke Pines Arts and Culture Advisory Board and the Shops at Pembroke Gardens. ▸▸ The 13th Annual Pembroke Pines Charter School Golf Tournament is being held this year on March 27, from 10am to 6pm, at the Pembroke Lakes Country Club, located at 10500 Taft Street. Not only is the golf tournament a great way to raise money for education, it’s also a fun way to meet new people; network with local business, community and education leaders; and enjoy a beautiful day on the links. ▸▸ We are planning many activities in honor of our 55th Birthday Celebration in April. The first of which is Pines Fair, which will be held from March 26 to April 5, at the Howard Foreman Center, located on University Drive and north of Pembroke Road. Pines Day, complete with a parade and pageants, will be on April 18. Further details on all of these events can be found on the City’s website. You can also call the Special Events Office at 954-435-6525. I look forward to seeing you all at these fun and family friendly events. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-4356505, or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com.

Slender Fit U Makes Dieting Easy By Debby Teich
S
lender Fit U is helping clients turn their bodies into fat burning machines. They are losing 1/2 to 2 pounds of fat per day without exercise, diet pills or packaged foods, and they are keeping it off. The medically supervised program helps dieters modify their relationship with food and eating, resulting in an easily maintained, long-term weight loss. It is the last diet they will ever need to do. Geri Kelleher, Owner and Program Director, answered some commonly asked questions about the program. Why do people call you the “HCG Guru”? Eight years ago, I lost 25 lbs. on the diet and it changed my life. For the past seven years, I have helped thousands of people achieve their weight loss goals with this program. The best part of my job is seeing people change before my eyes and watching them get their confidence back. Geri Kelleher, Owner and How does Slender Program Director Fit U differ from similar programs? My clients tell me that the difference is the way we treat people. We stay involved with all of our clients; they are not just a number. If they miss an appointment, we call them. We make sure that every client gets the proper guidance and support throughout the program and achieves their weight loss goals. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest dosage for weight loss. We also give injectable prescription B12. How much can clients expect to lose? Clients can choose a 23-day program or a 46-day program. Women typically lose 15 lbs. in the 23-day program
and up to 30 lbs. in the 46-day program. Men typically lose more - 20 to 25 lbs. in 23 days and 40 to 50 lbs. in 46 days. What is HCG? HCG (Human Chronic Gonadotropin) is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists in men and women. During pregnancy, it is produced in very high levels and almost completely controls the metabolic function. In non-pregnant individuals, research suggests HCG similarly increases the metabolism. Does the HCG have side effects? There are no side effects reported while using HCG for weight loss. The amount of HCG used in the diet protocol is a very tiny dose. Because it is a natural substance, this program is completely safe. What makes the diet so effective? Unlike other “diets,” this program reshapes and re-sculpts the body by releasing abnormal fat deposits. Every pound you lose is a pound of FAT, which is very different from losing a pound of weight. You are not losing muscle mass, or water. You also lose multiple inches and dress sizes and your shape changes. Do clients keep the weight off? Ninety percent of Slender Fit U clients keep the weight off. After completing the program successfully, they support and rebalance their metabolisms. In addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat, they modify their relationship with food and eating, resulting in easily maintained, long-term weight loss. Are clients medically supervised? Yes. Every patient has a comprehensive physical with the medical doctor before starting the program, as well as one-on-one counseling throughout the program. This is included in the price.
A
pril Claxton recently
lost 40 pounds in only six weeks at Slender Fit U. She was anxious to share her story to motivate others to do the same. Why did you decide to lose weight? I have always been chunky. When I turned 35, my body started responding differently and I gained a lot of weight. I had difficulty breathing, walking and sleeping. I always felt swollen and tired, and spent most of my time at home on the couch. I have tried every diet out there. I was contemplating surgery, but decided April Claxton lost 40 lbs. in six weeks. to try Slender Fit U first. What were your results? I am 5’6. I started the program at 296 lbs. and lost 40 of them in only six weeks. I am excited to lose the rest. How do you feel now? In only six weeks, I am like a different person. I am now exercising and have gotten rid of several medications, including one for high blood pressure. I feel empowered, more confident and very sexy. People are looking at me instead of past me. I feel pretty and alive! Why were you more successful with Slender Fit U than other diets? I never had a real coach who supported me throughout the process. Geri answered all of my questions and helped me stay on track. She wanted me to succeed as much as I did. In addition, I saw instant results, with a 10 lb. loss in only ten days. When I saw how well my body responded, I knew I had found the right program.
Does the diet involve exercise? Exercise is not required and does not improve your end result. It is a scientific program and it is the combination of the HCG and the low calorie diet that produces the weight/fat loss. However, exercise is allowed.
Can you purchase HCG over the counter? No. Real HCG cannot be purchased over the counter. The HCG comes in both an injectable and an oral form from the pharmacy. Consultations are free and by appointment. For information and to see more before and after photos, visit www.SlenderFitU.com or call 954-423-1376.
Is the diet easy? To quote one of my clients, “Besides being the most effective diet I have ever gone on, this was the easiest diet I have ever been on. Almost every morning when I got on the scale, my weight would be down. No long workouts, no agonizing hunger pains. That’s how great this diet is.” What foods are on the diet? There are no packaged meals. You are eating real food from the grocery store that includes protein, fruit and vegetables. This makes it an easy transition onto stabilization, as well as regular eating and regular life.
Lost 30 lbs. in six weeks.
46
Are patients hungry on the diet? Eighty percent of people experience no hunger on the Slender Fit U program. They even find very tiny servings to be completely satisfying. HCG dieters usually feel as though they are stuffing themselves in order to reach that 800 calorie limit!
