Spring Is Just Around The Corner

T

he arrival of the spring season is welcomed as a sign of renewal and progress all around the world. While we watched news reports of snow and ice storms ravaging our neighbors in the Northern states, we are fortunate that our Florida winter season did not bring any significant cold-weather periods. Now, as the temperatures start to climb, the ocean is slowly warming up and the beaches are calling our names again. We remember why Florida is the place we choose to live. With Spring Break approaching, why not spend some time enjoying the splendors of our Sunshine State. This March 2016 issue also marks the inaugural issue of our newest publication, Our City Aventura. It reaches 20,000+ affluent homes and businesses in Aventura, Golden Beach and Sunny Isles Beach. Welcome to our family! We hope all of our readers enjoy learning about what’s happening in your community and schools, and provide us with story leads on what makes our life in Florida so enjoyable. On this happy note, let’s enjoy all that Florida has to offer and let’s have some fun.

The 18-hour overnight event, for ages 3 to 93, will last all night, because cancer never sleeps. Relay For Life is the nationwide signature event of the American Cancer Society. It is NOT just a race or walk. Teams of people and individuals have fun while raising funds to fight cancer and increase awareness of cancer prevention and treatment. The event gives participants a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Lisa Pearlman and Andy Kearns will be co-chairing the event. This year, organizers have set a goal to raise over $165,000. Teams have been fundraising for the past few months. Anyone can volunteer, form a team, or join a team. All of the teams are encouraged to dress up and decorate their campsites in this year’s “laughter and love are stronger than cancer” theme. The overnight event will feature a variety of activities honoring and supporting those who have had cancer. Some of them include the traditional Survivor Dinner, Survivor Walk and Luminaria Ceremony. There will also be nonstop entertainment and activities throughout the event, including a pie eating contest, scavenger hunt

and more. Every hour, there will be a special themed walk, when participants might have to wear pajamas or walk backwards. One of the crowd’s favorite activities occurs at approximately 3am, when the men dress in drag and compete for the coveted title of “Ms. Relay.” “The City of Pembroke Pines is devoted to having healthy residents,” said Francie Novo, logistics chair, liason for the City of Pembroke Pines. “This is one way to continue to raise awareness through early detection and community involvement.” Since it began, the Pembroke Pines Relay For Life has raised close to $3 million. Last year’s event raised over $160,000, with the top 10 teams raising a total of over $100,000. “We have been relaying over 18 years and we won’t stop until a cure is found for all cancers,” said Jules Meyer, founder of the Pembroke Pines Relay For Life and co-captain of last year’s top fundraising Team, PR Pageant Coaches. “Relay is about a community coming together for a celebration of life.” For information, visit www.RelayForLife.org. Cancer survivors should call 954-564-0880 to find out the special ways they can participate. To join the Mayor’s team, call 954-435-6525 or send an email to fnovo@ppines.com.

Cutting Colon Cancer Out of the Family Tree About five of every 100 people with colon or rectal cancer have the disease because of a gene Giovanna DaSilva, MD passed down through their family. Researchers at Cleveland Clinic Florida are investing in specialists and resources to identify these families at risk, with the goal of preventing inherited colorectal cancer from ever developing at all. The focus is on familial adenomatous polyposis, or FAP. “Familial” means inherited, or passed down through families. Adenomas are specific types of polyps that can become cancer. People with FAP have a 100 percent chance to get colorectal

cancer, and parents with FAP have a 50/50 chance of passing it down to their children. “We want to get the word out about our program, so we can let as many people as possible know if they’re at risk, educate others in their family and offer each one the latest medical care, education and support,”says Giovanna DaSilva, MD, a Cleveland Clinic Florida colorectal surgeon and researcher. The centerpiece of the program is the Jagelman Registry, a database of patient information of families with FAP. Using this data, physicians at Cleveland Clinic Florida work with teams elsewhere to research the condition and share the latest medicines and other treatments. Besides colon polyps, FAP can also cause growths or

cancer in the stomach, pancreas, bone and other areas. The earliest preventive care ranges from medicines that stop the growth of polyps to simple colonoscopies to remove those that have not yet become cancer. “Using the registry, we’re able to let patients know what screenings they should have and how often. That can save their lives and those of their family members,” Dr. DaSilva says. “We’re definitely very proud of our program, and we’re looking forward to helping more and more patients through it.”

Walter C. Young Student Wins Women’s History Contest By Debby Teich

W

hen Michael Gold had to write an essay on the impact the Burmese python has had on the Everglades for his 7th grade English class, he never imagined that the information would help him win a contest. The Walter C. Young Middle School student was recently awarded first place statewide in the 6th through 7th grades category in the Florida Commission on the Status of Women’s 2015 Florida Women’s History Essay Contest for a story he based on the topic. “Celebrating women’s history presents the opportunity to honor and recount stories of our ancestors’ talents, sacrifices, and commitments and inspires today’s generation,” said Florida Women’s Hall of Fame Chair Commissioner Elizabeth Pines. “Learning about our past allows us to build our future. This essay contest is designed for youngsters to bring the future into the present, and design the improvements they want to see in Florida, through women.” The Commission invited students in grades six through nine to participate. Michael had to imagine that he was nominating a woman for induction into the Women’s Hall of Fame 20 years from now. He had to write about the accomplishments of her life and how she has made a difference in women and to society. Michael chose to write a 500 word essay about his 9-year-old sister, Daniella. Fast forward 20 years, and Dr. Daniella Gold was an accomplished ecologist who was a pioneer in discovering ways to protect the Florida Everglades from devastating destruction caused by Burmese pythons. Daniella’s fate had been sealed in middle school, when she learned these snakes can grow up to 23 feet long and weigh up to 200 pounds; eat almost anything; have no natural predators; and are very difficult to spot and capture in the wild. “She concluded that the best way to save the Everglades was to create a deadly and contagious virus that could spread throughout the python population in the Everglades,” wrote Michael. “She then wondered if the virus would affect other species, such as humans and others that are native to the Everglades. She then got down and dirty and created a unique virus, which later became known as Daniella’s Venomous Virus (DVV) that would only harm the Burmese python.”

Daniella’s discovery helped reduce the python population in the Everglades by 20%. She won awards for her findings and appeared in National Geographic magazine and on the Discovery Channel. “Michael’s essay was very creative and original,” said Barbara O’Brien, LA Teacher of the Gifted. “I loved that Michael made his sister the heroine of the essay in saving the Everglades.” Michael received a $100 cash award and had his essay pubMichael Gold lished in the Florida Commission on the Status of Women’s newsletter, as well as on its website during March in recognition of Women’s History Month. He also received an award certificate from the Florida Commission on the Status of Women. Michael was invited to read his essay in Tallahassee during the 2016 Florida Women’s Day at the Capitol in January. Since he was unable to attend, he recorded his essay and sent it to Tallahassee.

PPCHS H.O.P.E. Students Are Trained to Save Lives By Debby Teich

A

ccording to the American Heart Association, 70 percent of Americans may feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency, because they either do not know how to administer CPR or their training has significantly lapsed. Sadly, less than eight percent of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital survive. After receiving hands-on training in CPR, 120 students at Pembroke Pines Charter High School are now able to save a life. “Having this opportunity to teach CPR to high school students will have an impact on society, especially on the lives of those in need of immediate assistance,” said Sandra Lluis, Fire Marshall for the City of Pembroke Pines. The City of Pembroke Pines declared the first week of February to be “Save a Life Bystander CPR & AED Training Week” in the City of Pembroke Pines. To help recognize this special week, Lt. Ruben Rodriguez and Jamie Shires, both Fire Fighter/Paramedics with the Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Department, worked with students in the school’s Health Opportunities through Physical Education (H.O.P.E.) class. They received hands-on training in CPR for adults and infants, as well as the Heimlich maneuver.

“Students have very busy lives,” said Kathie Schmidt, PPCHS HOPE and Physical Education teacher, who is also certified in CPR. “Bringing the CPR training to the school provided an educational opportunity they may not have thought about seeking out.” In addition to the CPR training at the school, the City provided free evening “Family and Friends CPR Training” for residents and has been offering classes for City employees. Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Department also offers CPR classes throughout the year, including a free two hour non-certification class on the third Monday of the month. It also offers Heartsaver First Aid CPR/AED, CPR and Basic Life Support for Healthcare workers. “The Pembroke Pines resolution sends a message about the importance of promoting CPR and the benefits of automated external defibrillation,” said Fire Chief John Picarello. “We encourage our residents to get the training. Everyone has the ability to help save a life and the first step is learning CPR.” For information, call 954-4999600 or visit www.ppines.com/ LearnCPR.

I

am honored and privileged to announce that I have been re-elected unopposed to serve four more years in this great city. It gives me immense pleasure to serve the remarkable residents of Pembroke Pines. I thank you all for 24 years of support. With that said, this month is Election month and I encourage everyone to vote, not only for people to represent us locally and nationally, but also for important initiatives that directly affect lives. Though opinions differ and not everyone may be pleased with the outcome, we are a democratic nation. That means that we all work together with the outcome. We cooperate, move forward and seek the best for everyone involved. We all don’t have to agree, we just need to have respect for one another’s views to keep discussions open and communication flowing. It’s how our country was founded. My hope for 2016 is that our citizens take the Presidential election seriously and look in-depth at the important issues that are affecting us all both here and abroad. Too many important issues from healthcare, immigration, gun violence and the economy to terrorism and climate change are on the table. Let your voices be heard in voting for the right person who will lead our country during these tumultuous times. For those who think a general election is not as important as a primary election, remember that each vote is a voice as an American citizen, and every vote matters. Voting doesn’t guarantee that your preference will prevail; however, choosing not to vote denies you your right to be heard. Please also mark your calendars so you don’t miss a lot of great upcoming events in the City: ▸▸ 18th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival in the Pines is being held on Saturday, March 12 and Sunday March 13, 2016, from 10am to 5pm. This year’s Festival will be held at the City of Pembroke Pines Academic Village, 17189 Sheridan Street. ▸▸ “Sundaes with Bunny,” a holiday tradition for many in Pembroke Pines, is taking place on March 19, 2016, from 2pm to 4pm, at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center, 301 NW 103 Ave. ▸▸ The 14th Annual Pembroke Pines Charter School Golf Tournament, benefiting the Pembroke Pines Charter School Foundation, is March 25, 2016 at the Pembroke Lakes Golf & Tennis Center and Country Club, 10500 Taft Street, from 10am to 7pm. It includes an 18-hole tournament, a BBQ lunch, refreshments on ‘The Green,’ a cocktail reception, deluxe buffet dinner, prizes, an auction and awards. ▸▸ The annual Pembroke Pines Egg Hunts will be held on March 26, 2016. Each location will feature children’s arts and crafts, games, prizes, bounce houses, face-painting and a special visit from Peter Rabbit. One of the egg hunts takes place at Pembroke Shores Park, 501 SW 172 Ave. The other egg hunt takes place at the Pines Recreation Center, 7400 Pines Blvd. At each location, lines begin forming at 8:30am and the egg hunts begin promptly at 9am. What is Probate?

W

hen a loved one passes away, before the distribution of property to beneficiaries, his or her estate may need to go through probate administration. Probate is a court-managed process where assets of the deceased are managed, creditors are identified and vetted, taxes are paid, and finally, assets are distributed to family and other loved ones. While each probate is unique, most follow the following steps: ▸▸ Filing of a petition with the proper probate court in the county of the decedent’s residence ▸▸ If there is a written will, the original copy must be submitted to the court and a determination of its validity must be obtained ▸▸ Notice to Beneficiaries under the Will or Notice to Statutory Heirs (if no will exists) ▸▸ Petition to appoint executor , or personal representative for the estate ▸▸ Inventory of estate assets by executor/administrator ▸▸ Publication of Notice to Creditors ▸▸ Payment of estate debt to rightful creditors after 90-day creditor period ▸▸ Sale of estate assets ▸▸ Payment of estate and income taxes, if applicable ▸▸ Distribution of assets to beneficiaries and heirs Does probate administer all property of the deceased? Certain types of assets are called “non-probate assets” and do not go through probate. These include: ▸▸ Property in which you own title as “joint tenants with right of survivorship,” or “tenants by the entireties” ▸▸ Retirement accounts such as IRA and 401(k) accounts with designated beneficiaries ▸▸ Life insurance policies with designated beneficiaries ▸▸ Bank accounts with “pay on death” (POD) or “in trust for” designations ▸▸ Property owned by a living trust. Legal title to such property remains in trust and ultimately is distributed to beneficiaries without having to go through probate. Do I get paid for serving as Personal Representative? Yes. A personal representative can file with the court for reimbursement of legitimate out-ofpocket expenses incurred in the process of management and distribution of the estate. In addition, a personal representative is entitled to statutory fees which vary based on location and the size of the estate. In Florida such fees are deemed reasonable if less than 3% of the first $1 million of probate assets. The personal representative is expected to fulfill his or her fiduciary duties on behalf of the estate with the highest degree of integrity and can be held personally liable for mismanagement of estate assets in his or her care. What does probate cost and how long does it take? The cost can vary based on the value and complexity of the estate. Common expenses of an estate include personal representative’s fees, attorney’s fees, court fees, appraisal costs, and surety bonds. These typically add up to approximately 3 to 7% of the total estate value. Most simple estates can be settled within a year, but because of staffing shortages and backlogs in the court system, the process can take as long as 18 months. More complex estates may take several years to settle. Can I avoid probate? Yes. By properly retitling assets and creating a thoughtful estate plan, you should be able to avoid probate. Estate planning is a deliberate, premeditated act of love. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M. in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the area of estate planning and probate and trust administration for over 30 years. Is This the Right Time? By Evan Baron

I spoke with an individual who had been to see me for a free consultation some time ago. He had a few questions, which he was hoping I could answer for him. In our conversation, he indicated that the reason he had not yet decided to file for divorce is because he was waiting for the “right time.” I explained that in my experience there probably is never a “right time,” but rather a person should want to avoid the wrong time. A person’s initial consultation with my office is free. This often means that an individual may be considering a dissolution, but he/she is not ready to truly begin the process. That “first step,” that decision to actually begin a court proceeding, is sometimes the most difficult of all decisions to be made. It means that the thought of obtaining a divorce is slowly becoming a reality. Some people who come to see me have already decided that they are ready to move forward. Perhaps they have been interviewing other attorneys and are now somewhat familiar with the process. Perhaps they have attempted to mediate the case, but have been unsuccessful. They may have already had their decision made for them by their spouse, who has filed for a dissolution already.

The majority of the people I see are generally not ready to take that first step at the initial consultation. I truly understand a person’s hesitancy to jump right into the situation. At the consultation, I provide them with a great deal of information, which usually takes some time to digest. I never encourage an individual to begin the process unless they are sure there is truly no other solution. Some people think about it for days. Some people think about it for weeks or months. Some people think about it for years. I was recently contacted by two individuals - one who met with me a year ago and one almost two years ago. Each needed to wait until they found that elusive “right time.” There is usually no harm in waiting, other than the reality that a person may continue to live in an unhappy situation. Of course, waiting can at times result in a changing financial situation in the household. It could also result in a spouse moving or hiding assets in anticipation of the divorce as well. It could affect an alimony award, as additional years of marriage can often determine the eligibility and/or the duration of the support. The only situation in which I will never recommend waiting is if domestic violence exists in the household. That situation must be addressed immediately. Everyone who is moving forward with a divorce has their own individual “right time” to begin. I just tell people that when that time arrives, they will probably know it. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

One Mission - Three Alternatives The Secret to Saving Homes in South Florida By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Attorney

I

t is unfortunate that so many South Florida homeowners have surrendered their home to lenders, or have allowed their property to be sold at a foreclosure sale instead of pursuing all available alternatives in order to preserve their home. The secret to saving homes in South Florida is working with a law firm that (1) can aggressively defend a foreclosure proceeding, (2) that has an in-house loss mitigation department to effectively process a loan modification application, and (3) that has proven bankruptcy experience. Foreclosure Defense. To aggressively defend a foreclosure case in South Florida, the attorney you hire must be experienced in the litigation process, the rules of evidence, and must have a clear understanding of the local court rules that alter when and how cases are heard by our local judges. Extensive trial experience is a must, since any given foreclosure action can end up going to trial, and may require presentation of evidence and examination of witnesses. Loan Modification. Some homeowners believe that a foreclosure defense and a loan modification application are mutually exclusive. In other words, they believe that you cannot defend a foreclosure case while attempting to modify your loan. Nothing could be further from the truth. A law firm with a qualified loss mitigation department should organize and submit a complete loan modification application during the course of any foreclosure. In fact, submitting such an application during the foreclosure, improves a homeowner’s chances of obtaining a loan modification. Once a modification is approved, the lender is no longer required to continue paying attorneys to prosecute the foreclosure, and will begin receiving payments on the loan immediately. In short, there are huge incentives for banks to resolve foreclosure cases through loan modification. Bankruptcy. To save your home, the law firm that is assisting you must also have the ability and experience to stop the foreclosure through a timely bankruptcy filing. Even if you have been declined multiple times, presenting a bankruptcy that contains a request to participate in the “MMM Program” can result in a favorable loan modification. The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm are privileged to successfully represent dozens of homeowners in our community. We have foreclosure defense, loan modification and bankruptcy departments. Through the persistent and effective use of these three alternatives, The Arcia Law Firm was able to save 133 homes in 2015, accomplishing our mission of “Saving Families...One Home at a Time.” You can view videos and testimonials of our satisfied clients at our website under “Success Stories.” Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a consumer DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received foreclosure papers, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free personal consultation with Omar Arcia, or visit www. arcialawfirm.com to schedule your appointment online.

njuries to the growth plate in children may cause damage to the structures at the end of the bone that will allow the child’s bone to grow to full adult size. These injuries may be misdiagnosed as a simple sprain of the foot or ankle. However, a more complex injury may be present. X-rays can fail to provide a complete and accurate picture of the diagnosis. Growth plates, which start to close between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, can be damaged in incidents such as simple falls, sports injuries, automobile accidents or other major or minor trauma. If not recognized and treated early, a child’s growth plate injury can lead to shortening of the bone (growth ceases) as the growth plate may close prematurely. Angular deformities of the bone (a curve) may also develop. The severity of these deformities depends on the age at the time of injury, extent of the injury and the part of the growth plate that has been damaged. Certain portions of the growth plate may be injured affecting its growth while other parts grow more normally thus causing a bowing of the bone. Symptoms of a growth plate injury may mimic a sprain. These injuries occur more frequently than realized. There will always be pinpoint tenderness on the bone’s growth plate and a degree of swelling that is proportional to the degree of injury to the area. The child will often limp and try to avoid the body part. Normal treatment for a sprain may involve simple observation and application of an ace bandage or brace. This treatment for a growth plate injury that is severe may be devastating. X-rays are used to evaluate bone and joint alignment. A growth plate can be injured or even fractured with a normal X-ray. In more moderate to severe cases, x-rays will usually show the fracture. When in doubt, a CT scan may be necessary. Treatment options (early diagnosis is crucial): 1. Immobilization in a below-the-knee cast with or without crutches may be necessary if the growth plate is well aligned. These injuries will heal on their own within six to eight weeks. The younger the child, the faster it heals. 2. If the injury has caused misalignment of the growth plate it can sometimes be carefully manipulated back into place and then protected with a cast. The cast would be necessary for a minimum of six to eight weeks. Nonweightbearing would be mandatory. 3. If the misalignment is more severe and not able to be manipulated back into its normal position, surgery would be necessary to restore the growth plate to its proper position. This may help avoid later problems including malalignment or premature growth plate closure that may cause the extremity to be shortened and crooked. The most important thing is immediate diagnosis and treatment. Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. he focus of anti-aging procedures often rests in rejuvenation of the face. A person’s hands are often neglected, and therefore remain a tell-tale sign of aging. The hands are continuously exposed to environmental elements. There are distinct signs of aging seen in one’s hand appearance. Characteristics that are treatable with minimally invasive procedures include visible tendons, the bony appearance, visible/prominent veins along with skin pigmentation changes and wrinkles. These changes occur as a result of progressive thinning of the skin overlying the back of the hand with increased skin laxity and loss of soft

tissue volume. Rejuvenation of aging hands involves two distinct factors. First is treatment of the overlying skin to remove age spots, pigmentation, and skin wrinkling or laxity. Second is restoration of lost volume through soft tissue volume enhancement. Ideal hand rejuvenation is achieved by replenishing your skin’s lost volume. The only FDA approved injectable filler for volume restoration in the hands is Radiesse. This volumizing filler immediately provides the volume and lift that is necessary to diminish the signs of aging hands because of the calciumbased microspheres and gel that comprise this product. This process continues for several months after Radiesse is injected, extending the initial effect lasting more than a year to achieve long-lasting hand rejuvenation after a single treatment. By adding volume beneath the skin, Radiesse raises the skin level so that tendons, joints and veins lose their prominence. Radiesse is safe, effective and a non-surgical treatment which provides immediate smoothing of wrinkles, scars and replenishes soft tissue volume loss. Radiesse doesn’t require allergy testing. The procedure is done with topical anesthesia, with injections taking between ten and fifteen minutes. There may be minor swelling, redness or bruising at the site of the injection, which typically resolves within one or two days. The Radiesse hand lift is the latest procedure that utilizes microspheres of calcium hydoxyapatite to restore a more youthful appearance to the aging hands. Other procedures can be done in conjunction with Radiesse hand lifts, such as chemical peels and laser rejuvenation to reduce age spots and improve skin texture. Tips on Selling Your Home Quicker in the Current Real Estate Market

Rated Rated Rated ★★★½ ★★★★ ★★★★

Real estate

By Patrick Simm

016 is expected to be yet another strong year for South Florida Real Estate despite slowing sales, as we endure the market shift from a seller’s market to a more balanced market. As the real estate arena continues to “cool off,” there are an abundance of home sellers that currently have their homes for sale but are not selling. Although, there is a check list of reasons why a home is listed for sale and is not selling, there are two that are prevalent at this point in time - price and condition.

Price

With the inventory of available homes for sale still at low levels, one would expect the existing buyer pool to be rushing to place an offer on a home that fits their criteria. Sadly enough, the opposite trend actually exists! Buyers seem to be waiting for the homes that are priced correctly, meaning homes that are priced appropriately and close to fair market value. The average days on market that a property is listed for sale before selling at this point in time lingers around one hundred days. Statistics indicate that these listed properties undergo at least two reductions in price prior to obtaining an interested buyer. Therefore, regardless of how well you market your home, it is of utmost importance to price the home appropriately from the onset.

First Impressions are lasting impressions! From the most recent trend with buyers that I have observed, it seems like the average home buyer wants to find a home that they can move right in and start to enjoy, rather than spending time and money to repair, much the less upgrade. Wouldn’t you? If the home needs more than cosmetic repairs to make it enjoyable, buyers tend to first try to recoup the cost of upgrade by offering less for the property. Enhancing the curb appeal and decluttering the property also augments the condition of a property. I highly recommend getting a home inspected by a professional home inspector prior to listing it for sale in order to identify any concerns beforehand. Selling a home in the current market requires just a little extra work due to the current global economic conditions and uncertainty consisting mainly of the struggling economies in Latin America, Asia and Europe; a major factor for the recent slowdown that we have been experiencing. Therefore, if you are a current home seller having difficulties selling or you’re thinking of selling, doing all you can to get the home in above average or excellent shape coupled with an attractive price will surely increase the chances of getting your home sold quickly! Trust me, these two simple tips work! The development of varicose veins is often the first sign of venous insufficiency, and this can progress to more serious consequences of chronic venous insufficiency including swelling, skin changes and ulceration. Many people do not know, however, that congestive heart failure and varicose veins are often mistaken for one another. While vein symptoms often manifest themselves cosmetically, they can be and often are part of a greater circulatory problem. Vein disease is a progressive disease, so symptoms will worsen if left untreated and will require more extensive treatment in the future. Left untreated, varicose veins will increase in size and number. Symptoms may worsen and can lead to leg swelling, chronic skin changes such as dermatitis and discoloration – and in severe cases, non-healing ulcerations. These problems make it difficult to sit or stand for long periods of time, which in turn may affect a person’s activity level and quality of life. Varicose veins may also indicate a critical blockage in deeper veins, a condition called deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, that can be life threatening. Consequently, proper medical evaluation and treatment of varicose veins is important.

or 20 years, Charles A. Messa, III, M.D. has been providing his patients with the highest level of quality, integrity and expertise in surgical and non-invasive procedures. He specializes in plastic surgery and has become well-known as an expert in the cosmetic enhancement of face, breast and body. Dr. Messa has received numerous honors and awards for excellence in plastic and cosmetic surgery, including being voted Best Plastic Surgeon by the readers of Our City Weston for the past five years.

Patients can feel confident that they are in good hands. As Medical Director of the Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center, Dr. Messa has achieved Black Diamond status with Allergan Medical, placing him in the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Because of his recognized excellence in aesthetic breast surgery, he has served as a consultant for Allergan Medical Breast Aesthetics and has participated in Allergan Medical’s Executive Council and the National Council for leaders in Breast Aesthetics. He has been distinguished multiple times as one of “America’s Top Surgeons” by the Consumer’s Research Council of America, and received numerous Patient Choice awards and Compassionate Doctor Award recognitions.

Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Messa provided answers to some commonly asked questions about his practice at the Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center.

What can patients expect when they come to see you? My patients choose my practice because

they want exceptional results. I have extensive, specialized training and years of experience in the field of cosmetic plastic surgery. I am committed to every patient’s utmost satisfaction and I provide the highest quality of patient care to achieve each person’s individual appearance goals. I treat each patient as if he or she were going to be my first, only and last patient. My staff and I are dedicated to ensuring that each patient is treated with compassionate, attentive care that ensures their safety, well-being, and ultimate satisfaction with their results. We make sure that each patient feels special and unique.

we offer cosmetic eyelid surgery, nose surgery, brow lifts and facelifts. For the body, we offer liposuction, abdominoplasty, body lifts, buttock enhancements and vaginal rejuvenation. For breasts, we offer breast augmentations, breast lifts, breast reductions, breast reconstruction and breast augmentation corrections.

What laser procedures do you offer? We

offer fractional laser resurfacing, eMatrix skin rejuvenation, vascular laser, and laser hair removal. These treatments are utilized to rejuvenate the skin to diminish fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and acne scars.

What types of non-surgical enhancements do you offer? We provide a variety of non-sur-

gical enhancements, including neurotoxins that are used for facial lines, like Botox and Dysport. We also offer soft tissue facial fillers, such as Juvederm, Perlane, Restylane, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Silk, Voluma and Radiesse, and fat grafting for correction of facial, body and breast contour deformities or depressions and buttock enhancement. We have a comprehensive skin care program, with two licensed and certified aestheticians who offer facials, chemical peels and microdermabrasion. We also offer numerous skin care products to meet the needs of every skin type and permanent makeup. Additionally, we offer the latest treatments in non-surgical fat reduction CoolSculpting and Kybella injections to dissolve localized fat beneath the chin.

Describe your facility. The 7,200 square-foot facility before was carefully designed under my direction to promote a clear reflection of aesthetic beauty, with the look and feel of peaceful ambiance in its architectural and interior design. We offer a comfortable and relaxed setting with advanced technology in cosmetic plastic surgery. While beauty and confidence is our ultimate goal, the patient’s safety is of the utmost importance to me and my staff. That’s why I perform all surgical procedures in an accredited hospital facility or in our state-ofthe-art, AAAASF certified surgical facility. The operating room is equipped with an advanced positive air flow system and hepa filter to ensure that the circulating air is always ideal for the sterile operating room environment. Do you offer any advanced techniques or equipment that others may not? I practice the

latest techniques in surgical and non-surgical procedures. I caution patients on trying “new techniques” until they have been approved by the FDA and have documented benefits in controlled medical research trials. Some so-

called ‘new techniques’ are not more advanced and therefore, not beneficial. They are only gimmicks that practitioners use to sell to patients. It is very important for my practice to promote treatments that I know will benefit the patient that are safe and effective.

What is your background? I have been in

practice for almost 20 years. I was trained at two outstanding universities--the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Massachusetts. The physicians I trained under were excellent teachers and highly skilled surgeons. I had very comprehensive training in all aspects of plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as general surgery, with extensive experience in cosmetic plastic surgery. I am certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the American Society of after Plastic Surgeons.

What do you enjoy about what you do?

The aspect of my job I enjoy the most is seeing the positive effect that my work as a surgeon and physician has on making people feel better both through enhancement of external appearance and through improved self-esteem and well-being.

Describe any community involvement? My

wife Rosalee and I have been Weston residents for almost 20 years. We support many local charities, especially those for needy women and children, such as Kids in Distress, Women in Distress and ChildNet. We are also members of the Weston Philharmonic Society, NSU Museum of Art, The Broward Center for the Performing Arts, active in the Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation, The Children’s Fund for Glycogen Storage Disease Research, The American Cancer Society, and other community charities. My wife and I are parishioners of Saint Bonaventure Catholic Church in Weston. The Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center is located at 2823 Executive Park Dr., in Weston. To schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Messa, please call the office at 954-659-7760.
