Spring Has Sprung

D

espite this winter ’ s number of cool days

and even colder nights, we are now experiencing the warm weather for which South Florida is known. That’s why planeloads of northerners are arriving daily to take in the sun and fun during this Spring Break season. Why not take advantage of everything we typically take for granted? Pack up the towels, lounge chairs and picnic basket and spend the day at the beach. Head down to the Keys for some of the world’s best snorkeling and fishing. Or simply enjoy dining under the stars at one of the area’s award-winning restaurants. Now is also the time many families are starting to finalize their summer plans. If you have children that means picking the best camp programs. The choices are seemingly endless, with options for everything from traditional day camps to more specialized camps focused on sports, robotics, drama, arts and crafts, or learning a second language. To help you in your search, we’ve compiled a list of local camps in our new Camp Guide section included in this issue. There is truly something for every child and every interest. Wherever your summer travels take you, don’t forget to take along your local Our City magazine and send us your picture. You might be our Photo of the Month and win a gift certificate to a local restaurant.

Preventive dental care

is important throughout your life, no matter your age. Keep your smile healthy by practicing good oral hygiene at home and scheduling regular checkups with your dentist. Here are a few simple ways that you can prevent the build-up of plaque and cavities:

• Brush your teeth at least twice a day • Clean between your teeth by flossing at least once a day. • Eat a balanced diet, and try to avoid extra-sugary treats. • Schedule regular checkups with your dentist every six months for a professional teeth cleaning. • Ask your dentist about dental sealants, a protective plastic coating that can be applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where decay often starts. If it’s been six months since your last dental checkup, then it’s time to

contact our practice and schedule your next appointment!

17th Annual Relay For Life Overnight Event Helps Fight Cancer By Debby Teich

“The City of Pembroke Pines has raised over two and a half million dollars to help take a bite out of cancer,” said Frank C. Ortis, Pembroke Pines Mayor and Honorary Chairperson of the 2015 Pembroke Pines Relay For Life. “We have one goal – to find a cure. We are raising funds to meet that goal.” Relay For Life is the nationwide signature event of the American Cancer Society. It is NOT just a race or walk. Teams of people and individuals have fun while raising funds to fight cancer and increase awareness of cancer prevention and treatment. The event gives participants a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Jules Meyer, who is one of the original founders, will co-chair the Relay event with WPLG Channel 10 news anchor Kristi Kruger. This year, organizers have set a goal to raise over $150,000. Teams have been fundraising for the past few months. Anyone can volunteer, form a team, or join a team. All of the teams are encouraged to dress up and decorate their campsites in this year’s “sports” theme.

The overnight event on April 24-25 will feature a variety of activities honoring and supporting those who have had cancer. Some of them include the traditional Survivor Dinner, Survivor Walk and Luminaria Ceremony. There will also be nonstop entertainment and activities throughout the event, including a pie eating contest, scavenger hunt and more. Every hour, there will be a special themed walk, when participants might have to wear pajamas or walk backwards. One of the crowd’s favorite activities occurs at approximately 3am, when the men dress in drag and compete for the coveted title of “Ms. Relay.” “Everyone has their own reason for participating in the Relay,” said Francie Novo, logistics chair, liason for the City of Pembroke Pines and co-captain of the Mayor’s Gang team. “Once they participate, they always come back. We need to keep raising awareness, so we can find a cure for cancer.” To sign up a team, visit Relayforlife.org/ pembrokepinesfl. For information on participating or sponsoring a team, call 954-200-7522. Cancer survivors should call 954-200-7522 to find out the special ways they can participate. To join the Mayor’s team, call 954-435-6525 or send an email to fnovo@ppines.com.

volunteer opportunities as a way to earn service hours for school or simply to give back to the community. Since 2006, the Teen Volunteer Expo has offered them an opportunity to connect with a wide variety of local organizations that need their help. The event, which is co-sponsored by Pembroke Pines Charter High School and West Broward High School, will be held on May 2, from 1pm3pm, at the Broward County Southwest Regional Library, located at 16835 Sheridan Street in Pembroke Pines. Over 700 students are expected to attend the Expo, which is like “speed dating” for volunteer work. On one day, in one place, students will be able to match their interests with an organization. Within two hours, students can sample between 25-40 different organizations, both large and small. They will have an opportunity to talk to the people who manage the organization’s volunteer programs, as well as other teens who have volunteered for the organization. Most of the organizations that participated last year are expected to return.

f you have a great yard, now is the time to enter it in the 3 rd Annual Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Award Contest. The contest, which is open to all homeowners/multi-family owners, promotes quality landscaping within Pembroke Pines. It also honors Natalie Belmonte who tragically lost her life in 2011. She was a longtime resident of the Pembroke Pines, who loved nature and butterflies. The deadline for applications is April 14. Five winners will be selected, including one from each of the four City Commission Districts and one at large. The Landscape Advisory Board will judge the yards in April. The winning residents will receive One of the components of the contest is a butterfly garden. their awards at the May Commission meeting, in the spirit of Mother’s Day and to honor Natalie Belmonte during her birthday month.

The contest will consist of five components worth 20 points each. These areas will be added together to reach the final score for the property. All entries must attain a minimum score of 70 to be eligible. The highest score per district will receive the award. The five components are as follows: ▸▸ Butterfly component: This area judges the preservation of all stages of a butterfly’s life. It should supply food and shelter with the proper selection of plants, including: host plants, caterpillar food plants, butterfly nectar plants, and an area that provides about half a day’s worth of sunlight. ▸▸ Design and function: This area judges the overall design, use of texture, compatibility of materials, continuity, balance, and the overall function of the landscape in correlation with the use of the property. ▸▸ Maintenance: The focus on this section will be the overall view of the property’s landscape maintenance. Are turf areas mowed? Are planter beds kept weed free and edged? Is mulching and fertilization kept up? ▸▸ Florida Friendly Value: This section judges the selection and use of plants that have similar water demands. Mulching techniques will also be observed. ▸▸ Use of Hardscapes: This section judges the use of non-living additions to finish a landscape, such as fountains, ponds, statues, boulders, decks, mulch, stones, etc. Allison Tremont plans to enter her yard this year. “I spend a lot of time gardening and I am very proud of my yard,” said Tremont. “It is important for all property owners to take good care of their yards to make the neighborhood look nice.” For information and an application, visit www.ppines.com or call 954-435-6513.

Pill Box Celebrates 30 Years of Service

T

hirty years ago, on April 30, Pill Box Pharmacy & Medical Supply opened its doors on Taft Street in Pembroke Pines. On the same date seven years later, Pill Box II opened in the Memorial Hospital West Medical Office building. Pill Box currently has four locations.

Pill Box offers a wide range of services. Customers can have specialty prescriptions compounded or receive expert consulting on hormone replacement therapies. Pill Box also sells natural and homeopathic remedies, as well as all types of medical supplies for any age. Pill Box delivers both medical supplies and prescriptions and most insurance is accepted for those prescriptions. Owner Steve Pressman answered some commonly asked questions.

How has Pill Box remained successful, while competing against larger stores? Our

prices are better and our customer service can’t be beat. The difference is that “We Care” and I’m there. I am the owner and my partners are the owners in the other three Pill Boxes. We can call the shots on a moment’s notice and the big guys can’t do that. We can get you almost anything the same or next day. They can’t do that either.

20

Do you give back to the community? One way

to measure success is by how much you give back. When I first started out, I was invited to join the Rotary Club of Pembroke Pines. That was my first introduction to a serviceoriented organization. I learned about not only giving back to the community, but worldwide.

How has “The Dash” inspired you? I once

came across a poem called “The Dash” by Linda Ellis. The poem is about Owner Steve Pressman the mark on a headstone between the birth date and death that represents all of a person’s life. It is part of every speech I give when the community hands me an award for my service. The dash is my identity. It is my legacy. It is about how I have touched the lives of others. For decades, I have joined in or started community events and charities that have helped needy children, schools, sports

groups, animals seniors and more. I want to set an example for my kids, my family, my friends, and for everyone. It’s something I enjoy doing. My deep dedication to giving is ingrained in how I do business with customers and how I ensure they get the best from me and my staff.

Describe the Taft Street store. I often hear people

say, “Wow. This place has everything.” When they say this, they might be talking about the trains running on the ceiling, the talking pirate or the pharmacy museums. It also might be Nick, the life like security guard, or Phil, the giant talking pill that waves and welcomes customers at the door. You’ll have to come in and see for yourself. Park Bench Honors Late Pembroke Pines Activist By Debby Teich

Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis unveils the bench.

T

Original artwork by Diana Contreras

erry T. S herman was a well- known activist in Pembroke Pines

who passed away in 2013. A bench with her likeness was recently dedicated in her memory. It is located beside a lake in William B. Armstrong Dream Park. The dedication was hosted by the City of Pembroke Pines Recreation & Cultural Arts Department. The location was fitting, since Terry T. presented a Dream Park proposal to the City Commission in the 1990’s. It included plans for a six-acre space with treelined walkways, outdoor stages for musicians, and soapboxes for poetry readings similar to those in Hyde Park, London. Ultimately, the City Commission developed a 1.2 acre park with native plantings and walkways. Prior to the bench unveiling, Mayor Frank C. Ortis, Vice Mayor Jay Schwartz, Commissioner Carl Shechter and Commissioner Iris Siple spoke about Terry T.’s life. Terry T. was known for her outspokenness, prolific poetry, love for children, flamboyant accessories and love of Pembroke Pines,” said Mayor Ortis. “We believe she would have been very pleased with the art work created in her likeness. Terry T. Sherman was equally quick to criticize or praise the Commission. She was always driven by her passion to help others. We miss her.” Her son, Corey Sherman, read several of her poems. As he reminisced, he

joked with the Mayor and Commissioners about how it was his mother’s poems that caused public speaking time at commission meetings to be reduced from five minutes to three minutes. Sherman concluded with a poem about his parents love for one another. Jill Slaughter, Pembroke Pines Chief Curator, also spoke. She talked about the vision behind the art bench, and described how Terry’s dream would be realized through bench side poetry readings, dramatic storytelling, and other creative programming. A year and a half ago, Slaughter invited artist Diana Contreras to illustrate the essence of Terry T. and her love of the arts. Contreras created a 20.5” x 9.5” water color painting, which was presented to Cory Sherman. It features the profile of a woman wearing a large hat and holding an ornate fan. The background contains musical notes, balloons and dancing silhouettes. Slaughter then designed the aluminum bench, which features a digital copy of the original painting that was fabricated to serve as the back of the bench. over a quarter million Jews. They comprise approximately 15% of the population, making it the largest concentration of Jews in Florida. From April 12 to May 28, area residents can learn about Judaism at the “Jewish Heritage Month – A Way of Life” exhibit at Studio 18 in the Pines. “Curated by our own Benoit Menasche, this exhibit will feature historical and contemporary art depicting the Jewish way of life,” said Holly Bonkowski, Cultural Arts Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. The showcased art will include paintings, photographs, and sculptures. Some of the featured artists are: Peter Olsen, Yaacov Heller, Irv Rudley, Norman Morgenstern, and Benoit Menasche, among others. The exhibit has paintings about women in the bible, the 12 tribes, Bar Mitzvahs and more. “Many of the pieces were created just for the exhibit,” said Benoit Menasche, Art Curator for the City of Pembroke Pines. “They are an exceptionally talented group of artists.” There will also be artifacts from many parts of the world. There will be at least two torahs on display, one of which was used

in Warsaw, Poland during the Holocaust. Attendees will also have an opportunity to learn about many of the Jewish holidays as they see what a shofar, Menorah, Passover sedar plate, Shabbat candles, and many other items look like. Each one will be accompanied by an explanation of what it is, as well as some thought provoking questions about it. On May 3, from 2pm to 6pm, guests will have a chance to meet the artists, as well as those people that have procured artifacts from around the world. “It is a great opportunity to talk to the artists to find out more about them,” said Menasche. “You can find out what inspires them; how they approach the creative process; and more.” Studio 18 in the Pines is located at 1101 Poinciana Drive. The public is invited to view the exhibit from 8:30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am to 2pm on Saturdays. The gallery is closed on Sundays. There is no charge. Pembroke Pines Charter High School Gets an “A” By Debby Teich

W

hen Pembroke Pines Charter H igh School received a “B”

under the State’s grading system for public schools, principal Peter Bayer was sure it was an error. Although successful grade appeals are rare, he knew that the school had to try. The Florida Department of Education recently acknowledged they incorrectly calculated PPCHS’ grade. Now that the grade has been changed, this is the seventh consecutive year that Pines Charter has been recognized as an ‘A’ school. “We knew immediately there had to be some kind of mistake,” said Principal Peter Bayer. “The Pembroke Pines Charter system has a long history of excellence and success. Outstanding teachers and administrators, committed parents and families, and tremendous support from our City leaders have all contributed to the creation of what is one of the best charter school systems in the nation.” Pines Charter was initially penalized because a portion of their At-Risk students had been incorrectly identified as non-graduates. Although Pines Charter had one of the highest total point scores among Broward high schools, the State’s calculation criteria precludes schools from receiving an “A” grade if less than 65% of their At-Risk population do not graduate. Fortunately, the school’s data processor, Savina Quakenbush, kept meticulous records, so the appeal was able to prove that enough of its At-Risk students met the required bar to maintain the “A” rating. This rule has been eliminated as a requirement by the State going forward. “We are extremely proud to have Pembroke Pines Charter High School receive an ‘A’ grade,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “The school’s teachers, administrators, staff and students have worked incredibly hard to make our entire Pembroke Pines Charter School system the finest charter school system in the Nation. I congratulate them on their continued success.”

24

APRIL 2015 | Our City Pembroke Pines

City Manager and acting Superintendent, Charles Dodge, also spoke highly of the school’s administration, teachers, and students. “The fact that PPCHS was able to prove their ‘A’ through the appeals process speaks volumes. Obviously the original grade was not reflective of our school. It is both redeeming and validating to see it corrected.” The Pembroke Pines Charter High School Campus is located at the Academic Village, 17189 Sheridan Street in Pembroke Pines. ix students from Pembroke Pines Charter M iddle School West Campus’ 7th grade Advanced Life Science and 8th grade Advanced Physical Science classes qualified for 60th Annual Broward County Science Fair. Three of the seventh grade students - Kylie Fernandez, Swati Kumar and Aamir Lacewala - were awarded top ribbons. “We are so proud of our students who worked so hard on their science fair projects and placed in so high in the Broward County Science Fair,” said Michael Castellano, assistant principal of PPCM – West Campus. Kylie won first place for her project titled “Outer Edges.” In the project, she investigated whether or not eye color affects peripheral vision. Kylie tested nine

research participants with varying eye colors to determine whether or not her hypothesis was supported. She found that students with brown-eyes had the greatest peripheral range. She will compete at the state level this month. Swati placed 2nd for her project “Transpiration in Progress.” The focus of her investigation was to determine if the surface area of a leaf affects transpiration rates. She found that among three different sized leaves, the small hibiscus leaf was the one that had a gradual decrease in water level throughout the trials. This supported her hypothesis. Aamir placed 4th for his project titled “Sound in Space.” Aamir, who is very interested in space science, tested whether or not a vacuum effects sound transmission. According to his hypothesis, if a sound making object is placed in a vacuum, it will not be able to transmit sound, because there is no matter for it to travel through. He used an iPhone to investigate his hypothesis. “I am very proud of my students and their great accomplishments,” said Yini Cosio, science Advisor, who teaches 7th grade Advanced Science and 8th grade regular Physical Science. Cosio worked closely with all of the students to help them develop critical thinking skills, narrow down ideas for their annual science fair projects, and clarify their hypotheses. There is also the main “Masquerade in the Pines” parade, with over 75 entries that starts at 11am. The parade begins in front of McArthur High School at 6501 Hollywood Blvd and travels west from 65th Avenue to the Pines Recreation Center located at 7400 Pines Blvd. Bands, floats by businesses and organizations, dance troupes, schools, etc. from throughout the community will take part in the parade. The Parade Grand Marshalls will be past and present Y100 celebrity DJs Footy and Froggy, and a special surprise Junior Grand Marshall will also join in the festivities. The City of Pembroke Pines will enter several floats. They include the lead float themed “Masquerade in the Pines” with our full Commission, a Veterans Float to honor all those who have served our country, and a Royal Court Float, featuring last year’s City pageant winners and this year’s newly crowned Lady Pines winner. In addition to the parades, Pines Day will also feature a variety of free events from noon until 9pm, including a kids-friendly business expo Kids Konnection, concerts, performances, booths, a cake cutting ceremony and a fireworks show at 9pm at the Pines Recreation Center. Also new this year will be a special Pines Day photo area where residents can have their picture taken in front of an “I Love Pembroke Pines” backdrop. And, as part of the Kids Konnection expo, there will be a Mascot Olympics at 3pm, where characters from the Stroller Parade will challenge the expo mascot characters for a fun competition. We can’t forget another fun April activity – our Taste of Pines event. Delicious samples of local cuisine and a selection of signature wines will tantalize everyone’s taste buds at this year’s Taste of Pines on Thursday, April 16, from 6pm to 9pm, at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center, located at 301 NW 103 Ave. This tasty event will also feature live music by Night Breeze throughout the night. T

he term comes from the G reek words

gyne meaning “woman” and mastos meaning “breast.” In practical terms, this means abnormally large breasts on men. The condition is relatively common in adolescent boys, and 90% of the time symptoms disappear in a matter of months, or as adolescence wanes, a few years later. But the remaining 10% are burdened with a social handicap that can cause shame, lowered self-esteem and confidence. There are many potential causes including puberty, steroid abuse, obesity, marijuana use, side effects of medicine, and certain genetic diseases. Gynecomastia can be emotionally devastating. A man or boy with gynecomastia struggles with anxiety over such simple acts as taking off his shirt at the beach. In cases of obesity, weight loss can alter the gynecomastic condition, but for many it may not totally eliminate it. For all other causes, surgery is Before the only known physical remedy, and often the best solution. Once the contour of the chest is restored to normal, the patient can begin to feel more confident and self-assured with his physical body image. Plastic surgery to correct gynecomastia is technically called reduction mammaplasty, and reduces breast size, flattening and enhancing the chest contours. In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue may cause the breasts to sag and After stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). In these cases the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved and excess skin may be reduced. The procedure can be performed under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia depending on each individual’s medical condition. In cases where gynecomastia is primarily the result of excess fatty tissue, liposuction techniques alone may be used. There are various liposuction techniques that may be used; the technique most appropriate in your case will be defined prior to your procedure. Excision techniques are recommended where glandular breast tissue or excess skin must be removed to correct gynecomastia. Excision also is necessary if the areola will be reduced, or the nipple repositioned to a more natural male contour. Incision patterns vary depending on the specific conditions and surgical preference. Sometimes gynecomastia is treated with both liposuction and excision. Any surgical treatment to correct gynecomastia will require incisions. While most incision lines are concealed within natural contours, some may be visible and are a necessary result of breast reduction surgery. After surgery, dressings or bandages will be applied to your incisions and an elastic bandage or support garment may be used to minimize swelling and support your new chest contour as it heals. The procedure duration is typically one to two hours and most men are able to return to work within 4 to 5 days depending on how much lifting is required. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and consultant for Allergan Medical and has achieved the Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. To schedule your complimentary consultation with Dr. Messa, please call our office at 954-659-7760.

APRIL 2015 | Our City Pembroke Pines

Cervical Disc Herniation: A Pain in the Neck that is Treatable Scott Robertson, MD - Cleveland Clinic Florida Neurosurgeon Cervical (neck) disc herniation is a common problem that is seen most often in people aged 35 to 55 years, although older people can have it as well. This problem is becoming more common as people spend hours each day with their neck bent to look at computers, tablets or cell phones. The spine, or backbone, is made up of a series of bones called vertebrae that are stacked to form the spinal column. Between the vertebrae are flat, round cushioning pads called intervertebral discs, which act as shock absorbers. Each disc has a soft rubbery center

made of cartilage like our ear lobe. A herniated disc – also called a slipped disc or ruptured disc – occurs when pressure from the vertebrae above and below force some or all of the “rubbery cartilage” through a weakened or torn part of the outer layer. Symptoms and diagnosis The symptoms of a herniated disc include neck pain, headache, pain radiating down the arm, pain or spasms in the shoulder, and numbness, tingling or weakness in the fingers are all signs. Herniated discs can affect anyone, but they are slightly more

World class neurology and cancer care in South Florida. Our new center offers leading expertise and the most advanced treatments.

common in men than in women. People who frequently lift heavy items also are at increased risk. If you have pain in your neck or arms and shoulders, your physician can order a variety of tests to determine the cause. These might include more familiar tests such as X-rays or MRI or CT scans. It also could include a myelogram, in which as dye is injected into the spinal canal before a CT scan. Another possible test is an electromyelogram, which involves placing small needles into various muscles and measuring their nerve activity. Treatment Most herniated discs improve on their own or with treatments such as physical therapy, steroids or traction. Putting ice or moist heat on the affected area provides some short-term pain relief too. When these steps are not enough, spinal injections of antiinflammatory medicine can reduce swelling and increase mobility. These injections are referred to as epidurals or nerve blocks. For more serious cases, a surgical decompression around the nerve root and removal of a small part of the disc which is pushing on the nerve gives pain relief. For extreme neck and arm pain, we can remove the entire disc, replace it with a bone graft and fuse it to a metal plate. Alternatively, we can replace the bad disc with an artificial one. These tend to last at least 20 years but are not indicated for older patients with multi-level disc disease or other mobility problems such as arthritis. Recovery from surgery Most patients spend one night in the hospital, then need to take it easy for about 2 weeks. Some need to wear a neck collar briefly, but most can resume normal activities in 6 to 8 weeks.

Change Is on the Way By Evan Baron

I

n 2013, the Florida Legislature over -

whelmingly passed an Alimony Reform Bill. The main focus of the bill was to do away with Permanent Alimony in the State of Florida. Permanent Alimony is presumed when there is a long term marriage, which is defined in Florida Statutes as 17 years or more. Permanent Alimony continues until the death of either spouse or the re-marriage of the spouse receiving alimony. The bill that was sent to the Governor in 2013 would have resulted in the elimination of this form of alimony. It also contained a clause which would have made it retroactive and, as such, individuals who were previously ordered to pay permanent alimony could seek a modification based solely on the change in the law. At the very last minute, Governor Scott vetoed the bill and it never became law. A new Alimony Reform Bill has been presented to the legislature and it appears that this will be approved by both the legislature and the Governor and become law on October 1, 2015. It is not identical to the prior bill, but its main focus remains the same - to eliminate Permanent Alimony. This bill was just introduced and it is anticipated that there will be debate and changes made before it becomes law. Some of the main issues it addresses include: ▸▸ Once again, Permanent Alimony will be eliminated. Alimony will be based upon a number of factors including the respective income of both parties and the number of years of marriage. The new law, if passed, will now use a mathematical formula to determine the length and amount of alimony. This will assist judges and attorneys in determining what alimony award will in fact be proper. At the present time, no guidelines exist and as such awards can deviate from judge to judge. ▸▸ Retirement can be used as a basis for a modification. It appears that the age of retirement will be either the age when an individual can receive fill social security benefits or the age of retirement which is standard in an individual’s profession. ▸▸ The fact that the paying spouse receives an increase in pay does not appear to be grounds for an increase in alimony, unless at the time the alimony award the paying spouse was underemployed. ▸▸ Income from a new spouse of the paying spouse cannot be considered. ▸▸ An individual who either unreasonably brings or defends a modification action shall be responsible for the other parties’ attorney’s fees. ▸▸ The most substantial change from the previous bill concerns the possible retroactive application of this new law. This bill clearly states that the passage of this new law alone will not be grounds for a modification. This means that individuals who have previously been ordered or agreed to pay permanent alimony cannot seek a modification just because we may have a new law. It is expected that this proposal will go through many changes before the final bill is sent to the Governor for his signature. I will continue to keep you updated as this bill proceeds through the legislature. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. t is a beautiful day in South Florida . It is

seventy degrees and the sun is shining. People in your neighborhood are happy and enjoying the day with a renewed spring in their step. But you are not happy. You are in pain. It is hard to enjoy the paradise that is winter in South Florida when you are in pain. Many suffer from acute pain, chronic pain, arthritis or plantar fasciitis in their feet. They do not experience a renewed spring in their step with the cooler weather, but instead experience pain with every step. Cold laser therapy may be an answer for those with pain and inflammation in their feet. Many doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals have seen how this technology is able to speed up the healing process of those with injuries and other causes of acute or chronic pain. This technology works by the power of the laser light. The laser light penetrates tissue where it is absorbed by cells and stimulates healing and the fast reduction of pain.

Cold laser therapy works best on pain associated with soft tissues. Some pain lasers have been proven to be 93% effective in clinical studies for reducing pain and have been FDA cleared for pain relief. Cold laser therapy can be a safe alternative to surgery and medication. Surgery can involve more pain during the healing process, time away from work, and time off your feet. Medication may involve additional expenses, and unpleasant side effects like nausea, upset stomach or dizziness. It may also be habit forming. Cold lasers can be more effective than medication or surgery for some people. One cold laser brand is the Laser Touch One. It combines two proven modalities to stimulate cells and enable healing: micro-current electrical stimulation and low level laser therapy. This laser supports and facilitates the natural repair and healing of the body at the cellular level. The benefits of cold laser therapy are many. It is non-invasive and does not require surgery. There is no prolonged recovery. It does not involve addictive medication and there are no serious side effects. Moreover, it is cost effective. If you are experiencing pain in your feet, are tired of taking medication, and do not want surgery, consider asking your podiatric physician about the benefits of a cold pain laser. It just might leave you with that spring in your step. Dr. Neal M. Bullock’s office is located at 17013 Pines Boulevard in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954 450-4200.

Most Common Mistakes by Homeowners Attempting to Obtain a Loan Modification By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

A

Main Office: 3350 SW 148th Ave. Suite 405, Miramar, FL 33027 Available for Consultation: Miami • Orlando

s a result of various nationwide class actions and lawsuits

filed against mortgage companies by private individuals and government agencies, lenders have become more receptive and willing to assist homeowners in modifying their loans. However, lenders have also become more demanding of certain documentation to support loan modification requests. These are the most common mistakes homeowners make when processing a loan modification on their own. Provide too much information. Most Homeowners believe that the more information they provide to their lender about their finances, the more likely their loan modification will be approved. Just the opposite is true. Most lenders are looking for specific information regarding a homeowner’s income and expenses, specific reasons to support a financial hardship for a loan modification, and they require a specific order and timeframe to submit the required documents. Overwhelming your lender with the same unnecessary documents time and time again will only place your file farther back in line for consideration. The Arcia Law Firm has represented homeowners that have been trying to modify their home loan on their own for years, and within just a few months after retaining the Firm and submitting the appropriate documents, a loan modification is achieved. Last year, the Arcia Law Firm successfully modified over 130 loans, and so far we have modified more than 40 loans this year. Refusing to seek legal assistance. We have counseled hundreds of clients in mortgage related cases through the years, and the most significant mistake that homeowners make is to wait until the last minute to hire a knowledgeable and experienced attorney. Many homeowners think that they can easily defend themselves in a foreclosure proceeding, process their own loan modification, and save their home. However, some of the legal defenses to a foreclosure are highly technical and require specialized knowledge. The attorneys representing banks and the judges overseeing in these cases are interested in obtaining a final judgment of foreclosure, sale of the property at a public auction and closing the case. In more simple terms, this means you are out of your home before you can finish your loan modification. The key to preventing this end result is for every homeowner either in foreclosure or at risk of foreclosure, to stop playing “Russian Roulette” with their family home, and immediately hire a highly qualified law firm to assist them. The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm are privileged to successfully represent hundreds of homeowners in our community. We have foreclosure defense, loan modification and bankruptcy departments. You can view videos and testimonials of our satisfied clients at our website under “Success Stories.” Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a consumer DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received foreclosure papers, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free personal consultation with Omar Arcia, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com to schedule your appointment online.

Fractures and Sprains in Children and Teenagers By Robert H. Sheinberg, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.

M

ore kids are competing in competitive

sports these days. Many young athletes are improperly conditioned and may have structural abnormalities that predispose them to injury. In addition, the growing portion of the bone (growth plate) is susceptible to stress and trauma. The most common injuries are to the ankle, knee and wrist, because a tremendous amount of stress is put on these joints during play. Here are answers to commonly asked questions about fractures and sprains in young patients: How do injuries occur? Injuries may occur from falls (skateboard, rollerblades), direct trauma (getting kicked), twisting motions (turning the foot under the ankle, twisting the knee), repetitive motion (tendonitis) and overuse (stress fractures). What makes injuries in children and teenagers different from adults? Injuries in children can occur from relatively simple rather than complex mechanical forces that usually cause adult injuries. Injuries may involve specific growth regions (growth plates) of bone, causing disturbances of bone growth. Ligaments are looser in children than in adults and are more resistant to stress than growth plates. Therefore, ligament injuries occur less often in kids than do growth plate injuries. How does a parent know if the injury is a medical emergency? A significant amount of swelling is seen and pain is severe and the extremity may look visually distorted or out of place. A fracture may be associated with a break in the skin. Immediate swelling and the inability to move the injured area. Difficulty weightbearing or using the extremity may be present. Will my child need surgery? In most cases conservative treatment with casts, boots and braces are best. Some injuries may require gentle manipulation to put the bone and growth plate back in place. Surgery may be necessary when there is significant displacement of the fracture that cannot be put into proper position with manipulation and casting. Are there any long-term concerns? Growth plate injuries may cause disturbance of bone growth. Fractures of the leg may cause limb-length discrepancies and joint misalignment. Untreated injuries can cause premature arthritis. The child is followed with exams and x-rays until skeletal maturity. Fractures into the foot, ankle, wrist or knee joint may cause arthritis in that joint at a later time. This occurs most often if the joint fracture heals in poor alignment. How do we know if my child is ready to resume sports? The area is frequently examined to see if the injury has healed enough to resume sports. There should be pain free range of motion, good muscle strength and balance. Pinpoint tenderness may indicate incomplete healing. Children often try to get back into sports too quickly after an injury. A gradual, guarded and sensible return to sports should be the rule. Physical therapy helps. How do we avoid injuries? Certain children may be predisposed to injuries. Poorly aligned extremities (i.e. flat feet, extremely high-arched feet, bowlegs, knock-knees, in-toe or out-toe) should be evaluated prior to engaging in sports so that a child is not put at risk. Daily stretching of tight muscles to allow full range of motion at all lower extremity joints lessens the risk of injuries. Also, target training of any weak muscle groups is necessary to assure that all muscles groups are working together. Proper shoe gear is important and custom-molded in-shoe orthotics may be necessary to realign the feet and lower extremity. Braces and splints may be necessary to protect areas that are at high risk for injury.
