Let Our Attorneys Take Good Care of Your Credit, So Your Credit Takes Good Care of You!
W
e all know a credit score can control many aspects of our lives, from the house where we live, to the cars we drive and even our career advancement. Your credit report contains very important information about you. It is a guide into the “soul” of your financial life and future, so to speak.
Your personal information is on the credit report. Things like where you live, how many bills you have - and how you pay those bills, if you’ve been arrested or sued or filed for bankruptcy. This information is sold to all types of businesses, who use it to determine whether they will offer you a loan, hire you, insure you, and to determine how much you will pay for services they provide. In a nutshell, it tells them if you are a good or a bad credit risk. Considering all of these factors, it is obvious that your credit report matters.
Unfortunately, many Americans were affected by unforeseen events that may have affected their financial wellbeing, such as the housing crisis, recession, job loss, medical bills, divorce, etc. Moreover, even if you have not been affected by some financial misfortune, your credit report is likely to have mistakes on it. A study from the Federal Trade Commission found that 1 in 4 consumer credit reports contain errors. These errors include everything from minor mistakes to outrageous oversights. The most common mistakes include identity errors - where credit reporting agencies get your information mixed up with another person, incorrect account details – where the bank or lender provides incorrect information to the reporting agency, or the credit bureau processes the information provided incorrectly, and fraudulent activity – which is the most serious because it means someone else has used your identity.
Everyone has the right to dispute errors and incomplete information on their credit report, but the responsibility to identify and clear up mistakes falls on your shoulders. This process can be tedious, time-consuming and confusing. You may consider consulting an attorney who is skilled and experienced with repairing your credit that can handle everything from simple credit errors to the more complicated disputes.

t’s hard to believe that it’s summertime already. It seems like just yesterday we were shopping for school supplies and back-to-school outfits, and now the kids are finishing their last few days of school. Where does the time go? Before summer slips by, seriously think about your summer activities and vacations. Whether you choose to stay close to home and enjoy quick trips to the Keys, marvel at the magic of Orlando, take a family road trip, or fly off to faraway destinations, this is the time when

others and fathers have their own special day. In Pembroke Pines, so do the children. On June 26, more than 1,000 children are expected to join in the fun at the 6th Annual Mayor’s Kids’ Day. They will have an opportunity to eat lunch with the Mayor and visit participating businesses that will be offering them special deals. “The Mayor wants all the children
to know how special they are,” said Francie Novo, Mayor’s Kids’ Day organizer and Pembroke Pines Special Events Coordinator. “He also wants the businesses to know we value them and their efforts to make our city the best place to work, play and shop.” The free event is for children ages 15 and younger. Pre-registration is required. Residents can register at several locations throughout the city, including the Pines Recreation Center, Rose G. Price Park, Town Gate Park, and Pembroke Lakes Tennis Center. Kids will receive a special wristband that will entitle them to hunt for deals and freebies from local businesses throughout the city. Some of the things they might find include free bowling, swimming, haircuts, ice cream, mini golf, cookies, breakfast, and more. Businesses will also offer discounts on purchases, food samples, and more. “During the summer parents are looking for things to do with their children,”

said Novo. “The event is a great way to learn about the businesses in Pembroke Pines that are kid-friendly.” From 12:30pm to 1:30pm, the Mayor will host a fun-filled lunch for the children at the Charter High School, 17189 Sheridan Street. They can challenge the Mayor in a City Trivia game for prizes. They can visit with fire and police personnel, as well as mascots from several of the sponsors. They can also try their luck in the BrightStar money machine, which will be filled with valuable
prizes. The City will provide a free lunch and Publix will provide dessert. “Mayor’s Kids’ Day is a win-win for everyone,” said Novo. “The kids have fun all day and get to meet the Mayor. The parents don’t have to pay anything. The businesses increase foot traffic and get some great exposure.” For information, call 954-435-6525 or visit www.ppines.com.

City of Pembroke Pines Breaks Ground on $58 Million Civic Center SECTION HEAD Community News
By Debby Teich
P
embroke Pines has already been named “One of the Best Cities to Live in America.” Soon, it will be even better. Last month, City of Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis; Vice Mayor Iris A. Siple; City Commissioners Angelo Castillo, Jay Schwartz, and Carl Shechter; and City Manager Charles F. Dodge dug their shovels into the sand as they broke ground on the future site of the Pembroke Pines Civic Center, located in the city’s mid-town district. They were joined by local dignitaries; elected officials; project partners Terry Stiles, Chairman and CEO of Stiles Corporation, and Mario Cartaya, CEO of Cartaya and Associates Architects PA; and many others. The $58 million multi- purpose complex, which has been in the planning and development stages for nearly a decade, is scheduled to be completed in 2016. Mayor Ortis, who has served as mayor since 2004, was happy to finally break ground. “We are overjoyed that we can start building the future of Pembroke Pines,” said Mayor Ortis. “This is a great city to live and work in. The Civic Center will not only provide city services to our residents, but will also introduce exciting cultural and entertainment opportunities to the community-at-large.” The City of Pembroke Pines was awarded a $462,500 Tourist Development Tax Challenge Grant by the Broward County Board of Commissioners to support
construction. Additionally, the city was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts “Our Town” grant for $50,000 to enhance design elements and implement the inaugural cultural event on the plaza. The Civic Center will serve as the centerpiece for City Center, a private development that will feature entertainment venues, apartments, office/retail space, restaurants and a hotel on the 80-acre site near the intersection of Pines Boulevard and Palm Avenue. It will include a new city hall, a 3,500-seat state-of-the art performance/ conference space, a stand-alone Commission Chambers, and the Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery and Exhibit Hall at City Center. The 11,000 square-foot, two story art gallery was named after Mayor Ortis in honor of his commitment to the cultural arts. The outdoor space, which connects the facility with the surrounding communities, will be used for multi-disciplinary performances and community engagement events. Kate Downing has been passing by the empty site for years on her way to work. “I am so excited that they will finally start building,” said Downing. “Pembroke Pines already has so many cultural events, but I am looking forward to even more. The new Civic Center is a wonderful addition to our great city.”

Often, it is children and teens that are injured, since they do not know how to use fireworks safely. The Pembroke Pines Fire Department wants to make sure that its residents are as safe as possible. “This is a time Americans look forward to celebrating and it is important people don’t forget to be careful,” said Sandra Lluis, Fire Marshal for the City of Pembroke Pines. “Most people do not realize that the use of illegal fireworks results in an increase of serious injuries.” According to Lluis, Florida categorizes illegal fireworks as: roman candles, bottle rockets, mortars, or anything that explodes flies or lifts-off. Under Florida law, residents can purchase approved small fireworks, such as sparklers, glow worms, fountains and snakes. Lluis warns, however, that there is still an increased risk of injury even when using approved fireworks. “Common injuries include serious burns to the hands, fingers, head, face, ears, eyes, and torso,” said Lluis. “Some firework novelties can reach high temperatures between 1,300 and 1,800 degrees - at least 200 degrees hotter than standard butane lighters.” Lluis says that knowing and following just a few safety tips can help everyone have a safe and fun Fourth of July celebration. The Pembroke Pines Fire Department advises all residents to follow these precautions:
▸▸ N ever allow young children to play with or ignite approved fireworks. ▸▸ Older teens should only be allowed to use approved fireworks under close adult supervision. ▸▸ P urchase approved fireworks from reliable sellers. Avoid buying fireworks from retailers that make you sign a waiver. ▸▸ Read and follow the caution label before igniting. ▸▸ Store fireworks in a cool, dry place. ▸▸ L ight only one firework at a time and never hold any part of your body directly over the firework while lighting. ▸▸ Never attempt to re-light a “dud” firework. Instead wait 15 to 20 minutes, then soak it in a bucket of water and throw it away. ▸▸ Never light fireworks near a house or building, dry leaves or grass, or any other material that can catch on fire. ▸▸ Keep a fire extinguisher, a bucket filled with water, or water hose on-hand for emergencies. A complete list of Florida-approved sparklers can be found on the State Fire Marshal’s website at the following link: http://www.myfloridacfo.com/division/sfm/ bfp/Documents/ApprovedSparklerList.pdf For information, visit www.ppines.com or send an email to slluis@ ppines.com.

his summer, kids can learn about leadership, participate in fun STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) activities, take exciting field trips, and meet with a local judge. The Broward County Crime Commission’s CSI: Leadership Youth Summer Camp offers all of this, and more. One of the roles of the Broward County Crime Commission is to assess and evaluate crime in Broward County, as well as social issues that can lead to crime, and work with the Criminal Justice System to come up with solutions. The camp was developed to better educate the youth of Broward County about the Criminal Justice System and enhance public safety/community relations, so that incidents such as Ferguson, Missouri, do not happen again. “If kids have the tools, skills and inspiration to change the world, there would be less crime,” said James DePelisi, CEO/President of Broward Crime Commission. “At the camp, they learn about STEM and leadership, as well as respecting the law and Criminal Justice System. We want kids to understand all of the great things that they can achieve in life.” The summer camp program is for children ages 6 - 14 years old, and it is open to the entire community. It runs from June 15 to August 14, Monday to Friday, from 8am – 4:30pm. Aftercare is also

available. Instructors include: retired police officers, active police officers, certified school teachers, college students, engineers, retired engineers, and others. The kids will learn about law enforcement and courtroom procedure. They will listen to guest speakers from various law enforcement agencies, the State Attorney’s Office, the US Attorney’s Office, and judges from within the Broward County Courthouse. They will participate in leadership, self-esteem, and confidence building activities. They will engage in theoretical and conceptual science projects that are associated with STEM (including forensics) and relate to real world situations. They will also take field trips to public safety, criminal justice, and environmental venues that tie in with camp modules. “This camp would not be possible without continued support from Pembroke Pines Police Department’s Chief of Police Dan Giustino and Assistant Chief of Police Neil Vaughan,” said DePelisi. “We also owe thanks to Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School for letting us use their campus.” For information, visit www.browardcrime.org or send an email to Hope@ BrowardCrime.org.

orthodontic treatment, also called ‘interceptive orthodontic treatment,’ refers to treatment that begins at an early age, and this ‘first phase of orthodontic treatment’ typically takes place when a young patient has both primary teeth, as well as some adult teeth present. If Dr. Cozzarelli should recommend a Phase I
dontist by no later than age 7 or 8. In fact, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that all children have an orthodontic evaluation by 7 years of age. Having an early consultation with Dr. Cozzarelli is the best way to ensure that your child’s growth and dental development are optimal.
Why is Phase I typically done? Some com-
mon reasons or indications for Phase I treatment are dental cross-bites, skeletal cross-bites, under bites, excessively overlapping or deep bites, open bites , jaw growth or jaws that are not in proportion to each other, severely protruding teeth, the presence of deleterious thumb, finger or tongue habits, clefts, or severe crowding or spacing of the teeth. Often early treatment turns severe problems that might require future jaw surgery into a more moderate problem that can be treated with braces or orthodontics alone after. Enter the Master Chef Crazy Cupcakes Challenge SECTION HEAD Community News

ttention cupcake connoisseurs! If you have a special cupcake recipe that gets rave reviews from family and friends, it may be worth a cash prize. The Master Chef Crazy Cupcakes Challenge will be held on June 11, from 10am to 11:30am, at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center. There is no cost to enter. “This challenge gives home ‘chefs’ the chance to showcase their culinary skills and possibly win a cash prize,” said Helen Daniels, Recreation Division Supervisor. The Master Chef Baking Challenge got its start in 2005, when Daniels created the Chocolate Challenge as one of the evening activities at the Valentine’s Dance. In 2012, the Chocolate Challenge was moved to the daytime, so that more members could participate. Two years ago, the event was expanded it into a Master Chef Baking Challenge, requiring other key ingredients, such as berries, pineapple and chocolate. During this year’s Chocolate Challenge in February, Kayla Cook won first place for her Chocolate French Silk Pie, Marilda Benevides won second place for her Chocolate Flan and Teresa Acosta won third place for her Double Chocolate Cake. In the upcoming Challenge, judges are looking for the most tasty, fun and imaginative cupcakes. All cupcakes

must be home baked. No store bought entries are allowed. Prizes will be awarded for the top three “decadently delicious” and “crazy” cupcakes. All entries will be judged based on appearance, texture and overall flavor. Cash prizes include 1st ($50), 2nd ($30), and 3rd ($20). Winners will also receive bragging rights as “Master Chef.” Once the judges have tried all of the entries, audience members will have an opportunity to sample them. “Few things bring out the child in us like cupcakes or the chance to win prizes,” said Daniels. “Contestants should remember that judges are not only looking for the best tasting cupcakes, they are also looking for the ones that are the most fun and imaginative. Creativity is the key in this yummy competition.” Participants must be a member of the SW Focal Point Community Center, which is located at 301 NW 103rd Ave, in Pembroke Pines. It is free to join. For information, call 954-450-6888 or visit www. ppines.com, click on Departments and select Community Services.

Many Options Available to Treat Heart Failure Heart failure is a condition in which the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs, either because one side has gotten too weak or the Viviana Navas, MD heart has become Cleveland Clinic Florida too stiff. Nearly 5 Cardiologist million Americans are diagnosed with heart failure each year. It is the leading cause of hospitalization in people over age 65. Heart failure can have many causes, including coronary artery disease, irregular heartbeats,
high blood pressure, certain viruses, excessive alcohol or drug use, and past treatment with chemotherapy. In some patients, the cause of the heart’s worsening performance is not known.
Symptoms of heart failure The most common early symptom of heart failure is that patients feel short of breath after only a little physical activity. Some also feel short of breath when they lay down, and may find it is more comfortable to sleep propped up with several pillows. Swelling in the legs, fatigue, weight gain and gastrointestinal problems can also be early signs of heart failure.
The #1 name in heart care. Without skipping a beat. From routine care to complex heart transplants, Cleveland Clinic Florida consistently delivers world class care at every level.
If your doctor suspects you have heart failure, he or she will conduct a complete physical and review your medical history to see if any past conditions could have damaged your heart muscle. The primary test used to diagnose heart failure is an echocardiogram. This will give the doctor a clear picture of your heart’s health. Other tests that can be useful include blood work, chest X-ray, electrocardiogram, stress test and angiogram.
Treating heart failure Many types of heart failure can be fixed with fairly routine procedures, such as ones to correct irregular rhythms or open a blocked artery. If none of these are appropriate, medications such as beta blockers, ACE inhibitors and aldosterone antagonists can help improve the heart’s ability to pump blood, slow the heart rate, reduce blood pressure, improve blood flow and prevent fluid retention. Patients also are advised on lifestyle changes they can make to improve their heart health, such as eating better and exercising. For patients whose heart failure is more severe and cannot be managed with medications or other approaches, Cleveland Clinic Florida began a program last year to transplant donor hearts and implant mechanical devices. When a heart failure patient’s condition is worsening, a team of experts including cardiologists, surgeons, pharmacists, nutritionists and social workers, meets to review the best treatment options. If a heart transplant is indicated, the patient is put on the donor list to find a match. If a mechanical device to assist the heart is decided to be the best course of action, surgery to implant it typically can occur within a few days.

Although patients who undergo heart or device implantation are hospitalized for 1 to 2 weeks and need to come back for frequent follow up visits, most can resume a fairly normal life within about a month. They tend to report feeling much stronger and healthier, and often have few long-term limitations on their daily life.

YEA! Entrepreneurs Get Funding to Launch Startups SECTION HEAD Community News
By Debby Teich
I
n a format similar to ABC’s Shark Tank, four student entrepreneurs recently presented their business plans to a panel of local industry leaders and a public audience. They all received the funding they needed to launch their own real, legal, fully-formed companies and social movements. The students, in grades 6 through 12, have been participating in the inaugural class of the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) for the Miramar Pembroke Pines Regional Chamber of Commerce (MPPRCC). Throughout the year, they worked on developing business ideas, writing business plans, and conducting market research. “This program provides the students with the skills and resources to start a business,” said Robert Goltz, president/CEO of the MPPRCC. “Our hope is that they will continue to be entrepreneurs for the rest of their lives.” During the program’s annual YEA! Investor Panel Event, the students had six minutes to pitch their business plans to prominent local members of the business community. Based on the appeal and merit of their plans and presentations, representatives from companies like Vera Cadillac Buick GMC, PSAV Presentation Services, and Budget Rental determined the amount of funds to allocate. The students were: ▸▸ Alison Simbana received $150 for Booknot, a sole proprietorship that offers used and inexpensive books in excellent condition to students. Booknot will also donate money and books to charitable organizations. ▸▸ Autumn Ann DeSanti received $1,040 for Bright Kite, a sole proprietorship that sells kites that light up. The kites provide a way for customers to fly a kite at night. ▸▸ Katerina Alsheier received $210 for Miami Krew, a clothing line in the urban fashion industry. ▸▸ Brendan Liebeskind received $500 for Love Unity Purpose, which demonstrates the practice of meditation, while promoting the core values of clear mindedness and self-motivation. Each lesson links back to the values of love, unity and purpose in life.

“The four projects were all good projects and were marketable,” said Robert Goltz, president/CEO of the MPPRCC. “The judges used the money that was given, and also placed their own dollars and resources to some of the projects.” National sponsor Sam’s Club also presented a $500 gift card to Brendan for his company. He will advance to the YEA! Saunders Scholars Regional College Scholarship Competition, where he will compete for hundreds of thousands of dollars in college scholarships, a fast-track application pass to apply to be on Shark Tank, and an all-expenses paid trip to attend America’s Small Business Summit in Washington, DC, courtesy of the United States Chamber of Commerce. Goltz says that the MPPRCC will accept as many as 24 students in the program next year. Applications are already available for the 2015/16 class, which will be selected in October. he 6th Annual Taste of Pines was a huge success and all for a good cause. A sellout crowd of 500 people enjoyed the event, which benefited the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School System. The system allows Pembroke Pines children to begin their education in a Pembroke Pines Charter elementary school, study in a regional library, graduate from the high school and continue their education at Broward College and/or Florida International University. “We were delighted by the success of this event,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines.

Taste of Pines was held at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center. It featured over 60 local chefs and purveyors of fine wine, as well as musicians. At the end of the event, Dawn Dixon Treco learned that she won the raffle for the trip to Paris, London and Edinburg. Treco’s son is a 3rd grader at PPCES – West. The money raised will benefit the PPCS Foundation. “Mrs. Dixon Treco is so happy,” said Marta Cabeza, SOS liaison at the PPCHS. “She is looking forward to taking her mother to Paris for a once in a life time vacation.”

PPCES – East Students Learn in Flipped Classroom
School News
By Debby Teich
T
wo years ago, Erica Rzucidlo, 4th grade teacher at City of Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School – East Campus, turned her traditional classroom upside down. She is among a growing number of teachers that are using a new teaching method called the “flipped classroom.” She recently held a training session for East Campus staff members and teachers from other PPCS campuses who are interested in implementing the concept, which has received positive feedback from teachers, students and parents. The school is hoping to expand it to more classrooms next year. “Our goal is always to use strategies to best meet the needs of all the students,” said Rzucidlo. “This is one strategy that is working for our 4th and 5th grade students.” Rzucidlo’s students learn new concepts outside of the classroom by watching video lessons on a computer, iPad, or smartphone. If the students are unable to watch the lessons at home, they can use a classroom computer before school or during math. Now, they have more time at school to spend practicing with teachers and peers. “The students love it,” said Rzucidlo. “They are excited that they have ‘no homework’ and enjoy watching the video lessons. They are more motivated in class to show what they know and participate more in group discussions about the topics
taught the night before.” Jillian Taylor-Smith, 4th grade math teacher who also flipped her classroom, says she has gotten positive feedback from students and their parents. “I have seen engagement go up, and love getting to meet in a small group with all of my students every day,” said Taylor-Smith. “The parents like the fact that their child is not in tears at night doing math problems that they may not have understood fully in class. Some parents have even said they like to watch the lessons to help them better understand what the child is learning. For many, it has also freed up time for them to participate in extracurricular activities.” Rzucidlo says that her students have really embraced the flipped classroom. “It helped me improve my grades,” said 10-year-old Abriana Marte. “When the teacher taught in class it was explained once, but when you got home the teacher wasn›t there to help. With the flipped classroom, you are able to watch videos until you understand the concept. The teacher is also in class to help with any misunderstandings.” “The flipped classroom makes learning more entertaining for the students,” said 10-year-old Luz Fontana-Mansilla. “It is more than just sitting around copying what the teacher says. Flipped classroom helps me do better on tests and get better results. It expands the magic of learning.”
PPCMS – Central Campus Excels at SECME By Debby Teich
P
embroke Pines Charter Middle School (PPCMS) – Central Campus has been participating in the Broward County SECME (Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering) program for the past five years. Teachers and students get together before/after school, during lunch, on the weekends, and whenever they can to work on their projects. SECME is a strategic alliance to renew and strengthen the professional capacity of K-12 educators, motivate and mentor students, and empower parents so that all students can learn Caption: Marisabel Soliman and Nika Ambre and achieve at higher levels. The program at PPCMS is open to any student who is interested in engineering and is willing to do the hard work required to research, build, test and retest a project design. A team of teachers mentors the 30 students that are in grades 6, 7 and 8. “The SECME program takes students beyond the typical classroom exposure,” said Marisabel Soliman, science teacher. “They are encouraged to think outside of the box, and to engage in the process of problem solving, thinking critically, team building, and discovering real world applications.” The school’s team recently competed at the Broward County SECME-STEM Olympiad, which focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics principles, as well as SECME national competitions. The school received 1st place in the Team Challenge, 3rd place for its Wind Turbine Generator, and 3rd place for its banner. The school also competed in Water Bottle Rocket, Balsa Wood Bridge, and Mousetrap Car categories.

Soliman and 8th grade student Nika Ambre were recently honored for their efforts at the Southeast Florida SECME Award Ceremony. Soliman was recognized as the Southeast Florida SECME Angel of the Year for her passion and hard work encouraging middle school girls to get involved in engineering programs. “I want to encourage and build the confidence in my girls so that they will consider pursuing a career in a field in which they are underrepresented,” said Soliman. “If I can only be that one person who showed them all the possibilities out there for them and motivated them to explore, then I have served my purpose as an educator.” Nika was recognized as the Southeast Florida SECME Student of the Year for her leadership and enthusiasm for the SECME program. Nika led the bridge building team, the mousetrap car team, and the generator team during her three years in the SECME program. Soliman said she is expecting Nika to do great things. “Nika is a young lady that exceeds and excels at absolutely any goal she sets her mind on,” said Soliman. “It will not surprise me to see Nika make a huge positive impact in society.”

PPCMS-West Bands Played Their Way to the Top By Debby Teich
T
school news
he Florida Bandmasters Association District 15 Concert Music Performance Assessment has been called the band version of FCAT’s. Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School West Campus Intermediate and Advanced bands recently participated in the assessment and both gave “superior” performances. This is the 13th consecutive year that the school has received Superior ratings. The Concert MPA was held over a two-day period at South Plantation High School. All of the bands performed for a panel that included three stage adjudicators and one sight reading adjudicator. The PPCMS-West Intermediate band prepared music that was more difficult than the requirement. It earned an overall Superior rating on stage and a Superior in the sight reading portion of the assessment. It was the only intermediate band in the county to earn a Superior rating. “As of the end of performances on the first day, only two bands had received a superior rating – and my students knew this going in,” said Dayna Cole, Band Director for the PPCMS West Campus. “I knew the scores for the Intermediate band when we finished in the sight reading room. I was so proud of them, and they were proud of themselves, too!” The Advanced band also prepared music that was more difficult than the requirement. It received a Straight Superior rating on stage, as well as a
Superior in sight reading. “With Intermediate band’s Superior, the Advanced band definitely felt the pressure for giving their absolute best performance – and they delivered in a big way,” said Cole. Cole has been Band Director at PPCMS-West for 16 years. Her bands have participated in Concert MPA for 15 of those years and have earned superior ratings 14 times – often with both bands earning the highest possible rating. Cole received the Florida Bandmasters Association’s Oliver Hobbs Award for consistent and superior performances by her bands, as well as her dedication and commitment to her students. Dayna Cole, band director, and Meghan Doyle, FSU student intern, display the school’s award.

attend a variety of schools throughout the district. The Arts for the Future Scholarship Fund is a communitywide initiative designed to promote artistic career opportunities for graduating high school students. The scholarships directly assist students in their future educational and artistic endeavors to attend colleges and postsecondary institutions. Every Broward County Public high and technical school is invited to select graduating seniors who are outstanding in the arts including: theatre, dance, music, visual arts and technical arts (e.g. lighting, sound, set design). Since its inception, approximately $807,000 has been distributed to over 698 students pursuing secondary education in the arts. Scholarship funding is provided by community organizations, corporations and giving individuals.

chool is ending and summer is almost here. That means many of us will be swimming in pools and in the ocean to cool off. I’d like to take this time to remind everyone how important it is to be water safe Hanging out at the pool, at the beach or even splashing in a wading pool on a hot Florida day is a great way to beat the heat this summer, but it can also spell tragedy if you don’t know how to swim. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death nationwide for people ages 5 to 24, and the number one cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in Broward County. Yet, there is a lot that can be done to prevent drownings. Close supervision is crucial to keep children safe when they›re swimming or playing in the water. The single most important thing is to never take your eyes off children who are in the water, not even for a few seconds. Nine out of ten drowning deaths occur when a caregiver is supervising, but not paying attention. Even if a lifeguard is present, please never assume that he or she will always keep track of your children.

lantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the long band of connective tissue running from the heel to the ball of the foot. Heel spur syndrome is a bony overgrowth on the heel bone. Plantar fasciitis and heel spur syndrome affect women more than men. They can cause the bottom of the heel and arch to become painful.
Statistics
▸▸ Plantar fasciitis and heel spur syndrome are the most common causes of plantar heel pain. ▸▸ 73% of patients with heel pain are diagnosed with either plantar fasciitis or heel spur syndrome. ▸▸ 15% of patients who see a podiatrist complain of
heel pain. ▸▸ 90% of those who suffer from plantar fasciitis or heel spur syndrome respond to non-surgical care. ▸▸ 83.5% of the patients with plantar fasciitis or heel spur syndrome pain with first steps in the morning. ▸▸ Plantar fasciitis can occur with or without a heel spur present.
Causes
▸▸ Stretching to the long band of tissue that connects the heel and the ball of the foot ▸▸ Muscle imbalance ▸▸ Bone deformity ▸▸ Obesity ▸▸ Trauma ▸▸ Tightness of the muscles on the back of the leg
What Can You Do?
▸▸ Warm up and stretch properly before exercise. ▸▸ Wear appropriate shoe gear. ▸▸ RICE – rest, ice, compression, and elevation.
What Might the Podiatrist Do? ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸
Perform a physical examination. Perform x-ray evaluation. Recommend taping. Prescribe orthotic devices. Prescribe appropriate medication. Administer injections. Perform surgery if necessary.

Plantar Fasciitis/Heel Pain
T
he number one cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States in 2014 was liposuction, with approximately 350,000 liposuction procedures performed last year in the United States, according to statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. With an emphasis on nutrition, exercise, and leading a healthy lifestyle to look and feel better, there comes a time when, despite diet and exercise, unwanted localized fat deposits don’t go away. For many patients, removal of these pockets of subcutaneous fat through liposuction is the best option. However, there are cases when a person is not a candidate for surgical fat removal. The reason for not undergoing surgery may be multifactorial. There may be a medical contraindication or another personal reason why an individual would rather have a noninvasive approach to improving their body contour. Today, there are several nonsurgical fat removal options. The majority of them have only shown minimal or no benefit in controlled experimental studies with the exception of Cryolipolysis. The removal of fat by application of localized “freezing” technique is how CoolSculpting works. By no means is this technique equal in efficacy or outcome to liposuction, but it can be an effective method to reduce localized fat deposits for certain individuals. Based upon evidence of safe and effective body contouring clinical studies in humans, Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) received FDA clearance for fat reduction in the flanks in 2010, then for the abdomen in 2012. Recent studies have shown benefit in treatment of the lateral thighs, with 86% of the patients treated noticing a visible fat reduction with 90% satisfaction with the treatment. There are several vacuum cup applicators available now, including the standard contoured cup, CoolCore, and the flat cup, CoolFit, applicator. Fat removal with this device is now available for the inner and outer thighs, after receiving the FDA approval in April 2014. The applicator is placed over the region of localized fat excess. The fat is treated with a vacuum assisted device, which delivers cold to the subcutaneous fat. This destroys the fat cells which are metabolized by the body and eliminated naturally. Some patients experience redness, minor bruising, tingling, numbness or discomfort in the treated areas, but this is temporary and will resolve completely. Often times, patients return to work immediately after their CoolSculpting session is over. Over the next several weeks to months, the treatment area shows a reduction in subcutaneous fat and improved contour. We are now offering the most advanced techniques in CoolSculpting and CoolSmooth techniques to ensure our patients receive the best positive treatments for body contouring. lients who are going through a Dissolution of Marriage are often surprised to learn how much personal financial information they must reveal. The laws of this state require complete financial disclosure. Most people get overwhelmed with this requirement, since it can be very time consuming. I’m often asked, “Do I have to produce all of this information. I just don’t have the time!” I reply that it is called Mandatory Financial Disclosure for a reason. Since Florida is a “No Fault” State, the primary area of dispute between a husband and wife is usually financial. It is obviously important to know all of the facts before negotiations begin. The following is a list of the financial information required pursuant to Florida law. All parties MUST complete a Financial Affidavit. This Affidavit lists a party’s income, expenses, assets and liabilities. It is a sworn document, signed under oath by the client, swearing to its truthfulness. A financial affidavit must be filed in all dissolution proceedings, even in the most simplified uncontested matter. In addition to the financial affidavit, certain documentation must also be exchanged between the parties within approximately six weeks from the date of filing. If it is a simplified divorce, this requirement can be waived by both parties. The Financial Affidavits must be produced however. The documents that are required include: ▸▸ Income tax returns ▸▸ Pay stubs for the past three months ▸▸ Statement of income ▸▸ Loan applications and financial statements prepared during the preceding 12 months ▸▸ Deeds, leases and promissory notes executed during the past 12 months ▸▸ Checking account statements for the past three months ▸▸ Bank statements (other than checking) for the past 12 months ▸▸ Brokerage account statements for the last 12 months ▸▸ The most recent statements showing value of retirement accounts, profit sharing or deferred compensation accounts. ▸▸ Life insurance documentation ▸▸ Credit card statements for the past three months The above list is just a partial list of what might be required. Requests often require documents dating back three years. It is not unusual that clients often become quite anxious when assigned the task of gathering this information. Here are a few words of advice: ▸▸ Do not wait for the last minute to gather these items. Time deadlines are extremely important and any delays could result in sanctions, which can include payment of attorney’s fees to opposing counsel. ▸▸ Don’t try and do everything at once. Give yourself enough time to “pace yourself.” ▸▸ Be as accurate as possible in filling out all Financial Affidavits. Please remember that it is a sworn document and your answers (if incorrect) can be used against you. ▸▸ Do not ignore items or questions you feel are not relevant. If you are not sure of something, just ask. ▸▸ If you have an attorney, don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek his/ her advise. It can make this task a lot less stressful for all concerned. Stress Fractures to the Foot, Ankle and Leg By Dr. Carlo A. Messina
Ask the Expert
S
tress fractures can occur in any bone in the lower extremity or spine. These tiny fractures are common in athletes and occur when the force applied to a bone exceeds the strength of that bone. This is often the result of strenuous activities such as running, dance, military training or gymnastics. The result is weakening of the bone which, if untreated, can result in a complete bone breakage or macrofracture.
Causes:
▸▸ O veruse to the extremity may occur in an unconditioned athlete. ▸▸ Repetitive stress to a conditioned athlete without
periods of rest. ▸▸ Abnormal increase in weightbearing activity or level of activity. ▸▸ Malalignment of the lower extremity (excessively high arched foot or flat feet). ▸▸ Underlying bone demineralization (osteopenia, osteoporosis). ▸▸ Young females with menstrual irregularities. ▸▸ Poor or worn out shoe gear.
Symptoms:
▸▸ Pinpoint tenderness to any bone in the extremity associated with localized swelling. ▸▸ Pain that develops gradually and becomes severe even during normal activity. ▸▸ Pain that gets progressively worse during an activity. ▸▸ As the problem progresses, pain can become severe causing an inability to weightbear or participate in any activity. ▸▸ Occasional bruising.
Diagnoses:
▸▸ X-rays are usually negative for the first two to three weeks, then as healing progresses x-rays may show bone callus formation. ▸▸ MRIs will show the earliest signs of stress fractures as the bone marrow starts to become swollen.

Treatment:
▸▸ Rest from impact activity. ▸▸ Cross training with low to non impact activity to continue overall fitness. ▸▸ Custom molded orthotic (shoe insert) to improve cushioning and realignment of the foot and lower extremity. ▸▸ Occasionally immobilization in a removable boot to allow the bone to completely rest and heal completely. ▸▸ Rarely non-weightbearing with crutches in a boot or cast depending on location ▸▸ Calcium and vitamin D supplementation. ▸▸ Bone stimulator if the fracture is not healing. ▸▸ Surgery in rare cases if the bone fails to heal.

How to Avoid the Next Flood of Foreclosures
Main Office: 3350 SW 148th Ave. Suite 405, Miramar, FL 33027 Available for Consultation: Miami • Orlando
By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
M
illions of Americans will soon see monthly bills shoot up on their home equity lines of credit (HELOC) taken out during the housing boom from 2005-2008, because they will convert from interest-only (no principal) to principal and interest payments at the loan’s ten year mark. HELOCS are a type of second mortgage that homeowners used to tap into the equity built up in their home. A recent analysis by Realty Trac shows that 3.3 million homes in the U.S. carry HELOCS from the 2005-08 era, and that 56% of these homes are “seriously underwater.” When these HELOCS change from interest-only to principal and interest, the monthly payments will more than double. This change will force many homeowners to default on their HELOC payments, which will lead to foreclosure of their homes. However, there are several ways to avoid this next flood of foreclosures, and to save your home. First, you should have a qualified real estate attorney, like the attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm, closely review your HELOC for any deficiencies which prevent the lender from enforcing its terms through a foreclosure proceeding. For example, was the HELOC security agreement signed by BOTH husband and wife, and was it properly recorded in the county where the property is located?
Second, if the HELOC already “matured,” and more than five (5) years have passed without making payment, Florida law will permit you to eliminate that lien from your property through a quiet title action. This means you can wipe out the loan in its entirety due to your lender “sleeping” on their rights. Third, if you are unable to pay the increased monthly payment on your HELOC, you may be eligible to negotiate a significant reduction in the amount you owe your lender. Especially for homeowners who owe more than your home is worth, HELOC companies will not likely to recover the amount they are owed in a foreclosure. These companies prefer to negotiate a reduced payoff balance of the HELOC with the homeowner of anywhere between 10-30% of the amount actually owed. We have negotiated dozens of these reduced payoffs for clients with the balance paid within three months to three years. Lastly, if you owe more on your first mortgage than the market value of your home, you will be able to completely wipe out your HELOC, and the lien against your home by filing a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. In that bankruptcy proceeding, you will also be able to eliminate credit card debt, medical debt, reduce or eliminate IRS debt, and even modify your first mortgage through an innovative new program available in South Florida Bankruptcy Courts. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer bankruptcy seminar offered by the Arcia Law Firm in our area. Admission is free if you mention that you heard about the seminar through this magazine. Please contact the Arcia Law Firm at 954-437-9066 to make a reservation for the next seminar or to schedule your free office consultation with attorney Omar Arcia, who will personally review your case. You may also visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information about the Firm, our staff and credentials, detailed articles, informative videos & testimonials, and to make your appointment online.

t’s hard to imagine now, but when the City of Miramar was founded back in 1955, fewer than 200 people lived there. Homebuyers had eagerly snapped up the small number of available houses that were so conveniently located near the growing cities of Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Of course, we all know what’s happened since: Today, Miramar is home to more than 120,000 residents who enjoy its attractive climate, strong economy, excellent schools and parks – and an outstanding community hospital. That hospital is a facility of Memorial Healthcare System, Memorial Hospital Miramar, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. And like the community it serves, Memorial Hospital Miramar has grown – from just 100 beds when it opened on St. Patrick’s Day 2005 to 178 beds today, including 162 acute-care beds and a 16-bed Level II NICU. In its most recent fiscal year, Memorial Hospital Miramar had 16,000 admissions and observations and nearly 58,000 outpatient visits. Patients come to Memorial Hospital Miramar for a wide range of reasons: for medical and surgical services, the Cardiac Telemetry Unit, the adult and pediatric Emergency Departments, imaging services, the Intensive Care Unit, pediatric therapy services and women’s services. The Family Birthplace at Memorial Hospital Miramar welcomed more than 3,000 babies into the world last year. The hospital is also home to Memorial Robotic Institute – featuring leading-edge minimally invasive technologies that offer less pain, less scarring and faster recoveries – and the [U18] Sports Medicine Program, which helps young athletes coping with musculoskeletal disorders get back to the activities they love.
Memorial Hospital Miramar observed its 10th anniversary this spring by teaming up with Miramar Parks and Recreation to create Memorial Fitness Zone at Miramar Regional Park. Opened in March, the fitness zone features outdoor fitness equipment that park visitors can use to warm up, cool down or as its own fitness regimen. Memorial Fitness Zone is open and free for use to adults and children age 14 and up.
A Decade of Exceptional Service – and Recognition In just 10 years, Memorial Hospital Miramar has earned an impressive number of national awards for its outstanding patientand family-centered care. These include PRC National Excellence in Healthcare (2014), Press Ganey’s Guardian of Excellence Award (in 2013 and 2014), Premier Healthcare Alliance’s Quest Award for High-Value Healthcare (2013), the Leapfrog Group’s “A” Ranking for Patient Safety (in 2012 and 2013) and Premier’s Partnership for Patients Award (2013). Memorial Hospital Miramar has been dubbed Best Maternity Hospital by South Florida Parenting magazine, and has been named twice to Truven Health Analytics’ list of 100 Top Hospitals. The hospital has earned Premier’s Quest for Quality Award four times, and has ranked twice on The Joint Commission’s Top Performers on Key Quality Measures. As Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the South Broward Hospital District, I am proud to salute Memorial Hospital Miramar for its first 10 years of achievement. Those successes have been built on the most important thing the hospital does: providing outstanding service to patients and families. Whether you live in Miramar itself or in another part of this vibrant, exciting South Florida region we call home, you can count on Memorial Hospital Miramar to continue to offer safe, high-quality and cost-effective patient- and familycentered care. For decades to come! For more information on Memorial Hospital Miramar, call 954-538-5000.
