Summer Fun is at your Fingertips

A

s we enter the second month of summer vacation, and the novelty of days with no school has worn off, many parents (myself included) are hearing the familiar phrase: “What are we doing today?” Fortunately, we live in a community where there are many great things to do all summer long. Many parents took advantage of Our City Magazine’s Camp Guide to find their kids the perfect summer camp experience. It’s available online (www.ourcitymedia.com) and many camp programs run through August so there’s still plenty of time to sign up. Other families may be spending time traveling to parts near and far. Most of us will gather with friends and family to celebrate our country’s 240th Independence Day. I plan on slow-cooking ribs on the barbecue. If you are looking for something to do right now, have no fear! Check out Our City Magazine’s monthly community calendar – it’s full of local events and activities for every age and every interest. Regardless of what you do this summer, remember to stay safe. Cheers,

Getting to the Bottom of Your Digestive Troubles Anyone who has suffered digestive problems knows that symptoms can range from mild to severe pain and bloating to diarrhea or constipation, none of which sounds like Ronnie Pimentel, MD much fun. But in truth a lot more could actually be going on. It’s important to find out as early as possible, because some issues can lead to more serious, chronic illnesses if left untreated.

of digestive disorders much more palatable. For example, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is an important tool that allows doctors to see your internal organs very clearly. EUS provides very high resolution images, because it does not have to go through barriers such as skin and bone, as compared to surface ultrasound.

Your digestive system is a complex and extensive part of the body. It starts at your mouth, down your esophagus to your stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, and ends at your anus. It’s responsible for helping your body absorb essential nutrients and then getting rid of the waste, which are very important functions. So, if you continue to suffer from digestive disturbances, it’s probably time to make an appointment with your doctor. Not only will you be more comfortable once you’ve gotten to the source of the issue, more importantly, early diagnosis and treatment can reduce damage to your esophagus and GI tract.

EUS is very useful in helping physicians evaluate cancers or other tumors of the stomach, esophagus, pancreas, colon, liver, gall bladder, digestive tract and rectum, as well as to plan the most effective treatment strategies. It can even provide good images of smaller masses that may not be detected using other technology. And, preliminary results are available immediately, allowing for timely staging and treatment of gastrointestinal cancers. In fact, in the past 5 years EUS has become utilized more and more in this capacity.

Today, gastroenterologists are using advanced technology that make diagnosis and treatment

According to Cleveland Clinic Florida gastroenterologist Ronnie Pimentel, MD, “the EUS procedure is typically performed in an outpatient setting, and usually takes close to 45 minutes.” He adds that “patients do not experience discomfort during the procedure, and are able to go home the same day.”

How EUS works EUS is much like a regular endoscopy procedure in that a probe is inserted down the esophagus and into the stomach.

The difference, however, is that the probe’s tip has an ultrasound camera on it that provides a very clear view of the stomach and nearby organs. By getting so close to the organs, EUS allows doctors to take a biopsy through the stomach wall, by removing a small amount of tissue for testing. Getting a biopsy this way is more comfortable for patients than a traditional needle biopsy through the skin, and more critical is the fact that it reduces the risk of “seeding,” or spreading the tumor through the skin or to other parts of the body. Dr. Pimentel states that, “another important use for EUS is to perform nerve blocks for severe pain in cancer patients. We also can insert markers (known as fiducials) to guide future radiation treatments so that they target only the tumor, not the healthy tissue around it.” In addition, EUS is sometimes used to help find answers for patients with abdominal pain that doctors have been unable to explain.

Library Offers Book Fair and Youth Chess Competition Community News

By Debby Teich

O

n July 30, area youth will have an opportunity to play in a chess tournament and purchase some books at the same time. All of the money raised will benefit the Southwest Regional Library in Pembroke Pines. Chris Stormont, Certified US Chess Federation Tournament Director, will be leading the free, timed tournaments for ages 6 to 18, held from 10am to 4pm. Players will be grouped by their self-selected levels and play five rounds on regulation chess sets that are provided by the library. A computerized program will match players throughout the tournament. All competitors will participate in all five rounds, and will receive a medal or trophy. “The chess tournaments bring together kids with like interests,” said Youth Services Supervisor Lynn Morrison, who runs the chess program. “Chess is a wonderful game that dates back thousands of years. It requires problem solving skills, concentration, planning, discipline, and more.” The tournament is for players of all levels. Approximately 70 players from throughout South Florida are expected to participate. It includes beginners that are new to chess and participating in a tournament for the first time, as well as experienced players who belong to chess clubs. Pre-registration is required by

phone or in person, from July 14-28. No players will be registered after this date. Mentors from the library’s Youth Chess Club will help run the tournaments. They will assist players with procedures, help time the events, and more. The chess club contains players of all levels and meets throughout the year. Approximately 45 students participate during the school year and the number increases to 100 during the summer. From 10am-5pm, the library will also hold a Bake Sale and Book Fair, with gently used hardcover and paperback books for adults and children, magazines, books on CD and more. The library is still collecting book donations, which can be dropped off at the circulation desk. The Southwest Regional Library is located at 16835 Sheridan Street in Pembroke Pines. For information on the chess tournament, call 954-357-6733. For information on the Book Fair, call 954-357-6580.

K

ey lime pie is named after the small key limes that are naturalized throughout the Florida Keys. If you have a key lime pie recipe that gets rave reviews from family and friends, it may be worth some money. The Master Chef Florida Key Lime Baking Challenge will be held on July 21, from 10am-11:30am, at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center. There is no cost to enter, but all participants must be a member of the SWFP Community Center. “This challenge gives home ‘chefs’ the chance to showcase their culinary

skills and possibly win a cash prize,” said Helen Daniels, Recreation Division Supervisor. “We can’t wait to see (and taste) the delicious creations.” The Master Chef Baking Challenge got its start in 2005, when Daniels created the Chocolate Challenge as one of the evening activities at the Valentine’s Dance. In 2012, the Chocolate Challenge was moved to the daytime, so that more members could participate. Three years ago, the event was expanded it into a Master Chef Baking Challenge, requiring other key ingredients, such as berries, pineapple and chocolate. In the upcoming Challenge, all desserts must contain Florida key limes. It can be the traditional Key Lime pie, Key Lime cheesecake, Key Lime cookies, Key Lime cake or any other creation. All desserts must be homemade. No store bought entries are allowed and participants must be present to win. Prizes will be awarded for the top three delightfully delicious and visually stunning desserts. All entries will be judged based on appearance, texture and overall flavor. Cash prizes include 1st ($50), 2nd ($30), and 3rd ($20). Winners will also receive bragging rights as “Master Chef.” Once the judges have tried all of the entries, audience members will have an opportunity to sample them. “Remember to be creative,” said Daniels. “Judges are not only looking for the best tasting dessert, they are also looking for the dessert that is beautiful to look at!” Last year’s challenges included a Chocolate Challenge, Crazy Cupcakes, Mango Madness, and Holiday Cookies. Daniels says that several other challenges are planned for this year. Participants must be a member of the SW Focal Point Community Center, which is located at 301 NW 103rd Ave, in Pembroke Pines. It is free to join. For information, call 954-450-6888 or visit www. ppines.com, click on Departments and select Community Services

PPTOPA Presents Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” on Stage SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS

By Debby Teich

I

f you have always dreamed of seeing a Broadway show, the Pembroke Pines Theater of the Performing Arts (PPTOPA) can give you a taste of what it is like. It offers top-notch community theater at an affordable price. From July 8 - August 7, Disney’s The Little Mermaid will be on stage for 20 performances. Show times are Friday and Saturday nights at 8pm, as well as Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 2pm, at the Susan B. Katz Theatre at the River of Grass Arts Park. “We invite everyone to come see the show,” said Mina Mandel, executive vice-president. “The cast is fabulous and talented. It is an excellent value for a Broadway show and a production that all ages will enjoy!” Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s The Little Mermaid is a beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs including “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl,” and “Part of Your World.” In the show, Ariel, King Triton’s youngest daughter, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above. She bargains with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs, but the bargain is not what it seems. the crab to restore order under the sea. The PPTOPA production is directed by Geoffrey Short with musical direction by Caryl Fantel; choreography by Del Marerro; costumes by Karen Roach and Cindy Short; and lighting design by Michael Graham. “We are excited to present this colorful, splashy, fun family musical at PPTOPA this summer,” said Geoffrey Short. “We can’t wait to bring PPTOPA audiences into the magical world of The Little Mermaid that they have known and loved for generations, while staying true to the messages at the heart of Hans Christian Andersen’s story. The bravery to overcome evil, prejudice and fear can lead to true love and understanding. That will be the heartbeat of our production.” PPTOPA is the oldest continuously operating community theater in Broward County. It presents several shows annually that include a full orchestra, as well as professional sets, backdrops and costumes. The 2016-17 season includes: Funny Girl (October 28-November 20, 2016), A Tribute to Stephen Schwartz (December 2016), She Loves Me (February 24-March 19, 2017), In the Heights (July 14-August 6, 2017).

Pembroke Pines Residents to Celebrate July 4th By Debby Teich

O

ver 5,000 people are expected to show their patriotic spirit as they arrive dressed in red, white and blue for the City of Pembroke Pines annual July 4th celebration. The free event includes rides, live music, food trucks, and a spectacular fireworks display. It will be held at Pines Recreation Center, 7400 Pines Boulevard. “We must always celebrate our nation’s independence and never forget those who fought hard to protect it,” said Patrick Green, Pembroke Pines resident and Vietnam War veteran. “My family and I wait all year to celebrate with our friends and neighbors. The fireworks show is the best in the area.” Guests can arrive as early as 6pm to begin purchasing hot dogs, ham-

burgers, and other fun foods from more than 15 food truck roundups. From 6:30pm to 8:30pm, there will be game booths, arts and crafts projects, slides, bounce houses, and other activities for the kids. Families can also dance all night to the sounds of the band Higher Ground. At 9pm, one of the best fireworks display in South Florida will begin. The beautiful light and sound extravaganza will last approximately 20 minutes. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs. Coolers, pets and personal fireworks are not permitted. “It is a great way to spend time with the family and celebrate our nation’s independence,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. Although the Fourth of July is traditionally known as a fun holiday, it is also the one that typically has the most fires. Often, it is children and teens that are injured, since they do not know how to use fireworks safely. According to the American Red Cross, the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public fireworks show put on by professionals, such as this one. No alcohol, glass containers, pets, coolers or fireworks allowed. For information, call 954435-6525 or visit www.ppines.com.

CSI: STEM/Leadership Youth Camp Creates, Shapes and Inspires Future Innovators community news

By Debby Teich

T

his summer, kids can learn about leadership, participate in fun STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) activities, take exciting field trips, and meet with a local judge. The Broward County Crime Commission’s CSI: Leadership Youth Summer Camp offers all of this, and more. The camp is trademarked and developed by the Broward County Crime Commission in cooperation with US Public Safety and Management. One of the roles of the Broward County Crime Commission is to assess and evaluate crime in Broward County, as well as social issues that can lead to crime, and work with the Criminal Justice System to come up with solutions. The camp was developed to better educate the youth of Broward County about the Criminal Justice System and enhance public safety/community relations, so that future incidents such as Ferguson, Missouri, do not occur. Children learn about the great things that they can (and should) achieve in life, versus the different obstacles in society that can detour children down the wrong path towards a life of crime. “If kids have the tools, skills and inspiration to change the world, there would be less crime,” said James DePelisi, CEO/President of Broward Crime Commission. “At the camp, they learn about STEM and leadership, as well as respecting the law and Criminal Justice System. We want kids to understand all of the great things that they can achieve in life.” The summer camp program is for children ages 8 - 16 years old, and it is open to the entire community. One of the camp’s two locations included Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School, 1850 Pembroke Road, where it runs from July 5 to 15, Monday to Friday, from 8am – 4:30pm. Aftercare is also available. Instructors include: retired police officers, active police officers, certified school teachers, college students, engineers, retired engineers, and others. The kids will learn about law enforcement and courtroom procedure. They will listen to guest speakers from various law enforcement agencies, the State Attorney’s Office, the US Attorney’s Office, and Judges from within the Broward County Courthouse. They will participate in leadership, self-esteem and confidence building activities. They will engage in theoretical and conceptual science projects that are associated with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math projects (including forensics) and relate to real world situations. They will also take

CSI Camp 2015

field trips to public safety, criminal justice and environmental venues that associated with camp modules. “This camp would not be possible without continued support from Pembroke Pines Police Department’s Chief of Police Dan Giustino and Assistant Chief of Police Neil Vaughan,” said DePelisi. “We also owe thanks to Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School for letting us use their campus.” For information, visit www.browardcrime.org or send an email to Hope@BrowardCrime.org.

Stay Cool and Have Fun at Paradise Cove Water Park By Debby Teich

ocated inside C.B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines, Paradise Cove Water Park is the Broward County Parks and Recreation Division’s largest aquatics facility. It offers something for everyone, making it one of the best places in the area to cool off during the summer. “We have been to water parks all over the country and the best one is right in our own backyard,” said Rhonda Klein, who lives across the street from the park. “During the summer, we spend most weekends there. It is fun for the whole family and you can’t beat the price. We can spend the entire day there and it costs less than a movie.” The park offers the following water-based activities: Parrot’s Point ▸▸ Paradise Pipeline features four five-story-tall waterslides that vary in length from 395 to 430 feet. More than 400 gallons of water per minute move riders through the corkscrew, until they exit into a four-foot-deep plunge pool. Riders must be 42 inches tall, weigh less than 250 pounds, and be able to swim. ▸▸ Sharky’s Lagoon is a water playground for all ages. It features an 18-inch-deep pool with three waterSharky’s Lagoon slides that vary in length from 83 feet to 125 feet, as well as other interactive play elements. ▸▸ Parrot’s Point is a water playground for ages 5 and under. It features a

12-inch-deep pool with two small waterslides and many other interactive play elements. ▸▸ Crazy Creek is a 410-foot-long, meandering tube ride with interactive play elements along the route. ▸▸ Swimming lessons are available at Paradise Cove from June through August. Dates vary. When visitors get hungry, they can visit the Paradise Grill or Sand Dollar for food and drinks. All of this makes it a great place for small events, such as birthday parties, family gatherings, summer camp groups, Funbrellas and more. During aquatics season, Paradise Cove is open from 9:30am - 5:20pm. The calendar is posted on the website. Admission fees are $10/person for all-day admission and $6.75/ person after 3pm. Pembroke Pines Residents Observe Memorial Day COMMUNITY NEWS

By Debby Teich

O

n Memorial Day, over 300 people payed their respects and witnessed the laying of the wreath at the Veterans Monument in Donnith H. Fletcher Park, named after the first Pembroke Pines resident to become a causality of the Vietnam War. On June 30, 1970, Fletcher was aboard a helicopter that was shot down and he lost his life. “We gather to honor the memory of the fallen and to honor those who continue to serve in the United States Military,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis. Mayor Ortis welcomed the crowd and Pembroke Pines Fire Department Chaplain Captain Vincent Scardino delivered the invocation. The Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Honor Guard presented the Colors, Boy Scout Troop 460 led the Pledge of Allegiance and Natalie Lang sang the National Anthem. Several people spoke, including Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis; Vice Mayor/World War II Veteran Carl Shechter; and Commissioners Angelo Castillo, Iris A. Siple and Jay Schwartz. Charles W. Flanagan High School students Josh Simpo and Randy Rosario played taps and Major Everett “Bud” Lacroix, of the United States Southern Command, delivered an emotional speech on the true meaning of Memorial Day. Pembroke Pines Police Department Accepts the Running Man Challenge By Debby Teich

W

hen the Pembroke Pines Police Department (PPPD) was recently “challenged” by the Miramar Police Department and the Sunrise Police Department to participate in the “Running Man Challenge,” a new internet trend, they quickly accepted. The video, which can be seen at youtu.be/ O6GtsgdL3aQ, reflects the fun side of the police department and its officers. At the end of the video, Chief Giustino and Mayor Frank C. Ortis challenged the City of Wilton Manors and the Wilton Manors Police Department. The Running Man Challenge, which is similar to other viral dances like the Harlem Shake, was made popular by two University of Maryland basketball players. It requires participants to create a video, while doing a variation of the running man to an old ‘90s hit song called “My Boo” by Ghost Town DJ’s. The videos don’t serve any sort of purpose or promote any cause. The first police department to participate was in New Zealand. They started the trend of challenging other departments and it has become a global sensation. Amanda Conwell, Katelen Berry, Sergeant Sean Wollard, and Detective Sammarco organized the event at PPPD. They created a script, obtained approval, gathered as many participants as possible, and filmed the entire shoot in a single day with no budget. Approximately 75 people participated, including current police department employees from K9, Crime Scene, Detective Bureau,

18

July 2016 | OUR CITY pembroke pines

SVU and others, as well as members of the Citizen’s Police Academy and Police Explorers program. “I think it is important to show the humanity behind the badge,” said Amanda Conwell, PPPD social media manager. “People often have this idea that police officers are stone-faced authoritarians, which is just not the case at all. A big reason why our officers do what they do is because they have such big hearts. No one chooses to place themselves in harm’s way on a daily basis if they don’t have a deep sense of compassion and care for their community. Participating in things like the Running Man Challenge allows our officers to have a bit of fun with other departments and our residents. It was a great morale boost for all of our employees to see everyone having a laugh.” The PPPD has participated in other social media trends, such as the “No Shave November” campaign to support Men’s Health Awareness. It also participated in the “Ice Bucket Challenge,” which raised $975 for the ALS Association and showed support for Officer Jen Schmidt’s brother-in-law, Ken Vos, who passed from ALS several months after the challenge was held in his honor. For information on PPPD, visit www.ppines.com/police.

school news

By Debby Teich

Several Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School West Campus 8th grade students participated in a National History Day Competition, sponsored by the Museum of Florida History, and made some history of their own. They won at both the District and State levels. “We are so proud of our students,” said Deanne Reynolds, 8th grade U.S. history teacher at the West Campus, who along with history teacher Vera Gore helped prepare the students for competition. “They went back in time and made history come alive. They are now part of history themselves.” Team members included: ▸▸ Jessica Chang - Individual Performance ▸▸ Sarah McDonald, Michael Omole - Group Performance ▸▸ Justin Pierce - Individual Documentary ▸▸ Aamir Lacewala, Kylie Fernandez, Rafael Rodriguez - Group Documentary ▸▸ Sarah Lendzian - Individual Exhibit ▸▸ Anushka Radhakrishnan, Sophia Robinson, Mya Saint - Group Exhibit ▸▸ Ara Johnson - Individual Website ▸▸ Andrea Chacon, Briana Walters - Group Website ▸▸ Ava Johnson - Individual Historical Paper The Florida History Fair is an annual, statewide activity that enhances the teaching and learning of history at elementary and secondary levels. Well, besides the training I received at Paul Mitchell and the technical part the fact that every single guest gets their own privacy with no fast pace, loud noise of a regular salon. Most importantly my full attention in every appointment and every service done at One on One by Liz. Also it is not about what I think the guest should get but it is more about what they want for that appointment and that is where communication plays an important part. I am trying to build a relationship with every single guest that sits in my chair which for myself as a stylist is one of the most important things to have.

Every year, the League awards four $1,000 scholarships to Broward County seniors who plan to pursue a major in public administration, political science or other government-related field at a college or university. Scholarships are made possible thanks to Broward County’s elected officials and the Broward League of Cities’ associate members, who make personal contributions through raffle purchases and donations to the scholarship fund. Danielle Bush (Cypress Bay High School), Manuel Osaba (Western High School), and Erin Connors (Deerfield Beach High School) also won awards. “We are impressed by the caliber of students who are receiving this scholarship,” said David Rosenof, Past President, Broward League of Cities. “The League is honored to shine the spotlight on these four highly deserving scholars for their dedication to their education, their achievements in the community and their passion for political science and government. We hope others can learn from their successes and drive.” Looghermine wants to become a U.S. ambassador and congresswoman, helping to build relationships between the United States and foreign nations through diplomacy, environmental protection and women’s empowerment. “This form of public service is important, because it helps people all around the world receive the help and support that they need to build better communities,” said Looghermine. Chartered in 1957, the Broward League of Cities is a non-partisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness and resolving issues facing Broward County’s 31 cities and municipalities. A member of the Florida League of Cities, which serves to unify local governments throughout the state of Florida, the organization’s membership is made up of elected officials from municipal governments and area businesses. The organization is committed to increasing aware-

Developmental Flatfoot in Children

D

evelopmental Flatfoot is one of the most common conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system of children and teenagers. There is a tendency for the child’s flatfoot to be ignored or treated with benign neglect. The facts are that it is NOT normal, the majority of children do NOT outgrow it, and there IS cause for some concern. Flatfeet are a genetic problem. Ligaments in the arch which connect the bones together are loose, allowing the arch to collapse. Congenital bone abnormalities as well as trauma to the tendons and ligaments in the inner arch can cause flattening of the arch and foot. A common cause of developmental flatfoot is tightness in the calf muscles, which aggravates the severe foot deformity. Symptoms include young children constantly preferring to be carried by a parent or be put in a stroller due to fatigue in their legs. Other symptoms include leg pain, especially at night, and premature fatigue with activity, especially in young children or teenagers. Inner leg, ankle and foot pain with activity is common. It is occasionally associated with inner knee pain and lower back pain.

wesTon oFFiCe:

Signs include lowering or complete collapse of the arch. The front part of the foot is turned out relative to the back part of the foot and the arch bulges towards the inside of the ankle. Knock-Knees is common which exasperates the deformity. The feet, ankles, and legs just do not appear right upon examination or when the patient is standing. The child can be overweight and lacks athletic ability; general inactivity or avoidance of activity in children is common. Abnormal shoe wear as well as a child or teenager that does not run correctly occurs due to the deformity. Treatment begins with a complete physical examination of the lower extremity and spine to find the underlying cause. This includes examining the child’s gait (walking pattern). Physical therapy to strengthen weak muscles and loosen tight muscles and help to improve overall coordination. Occasional immobilization of the extremity to loosen up tight muscles with a walking cast is necessary to decrease the deforming force of the calf muscle on the flatfoot. Custom molded shoe insoles (orthotics) to help permanently support the foot and put it in its proper position. In most cases this will overnight correct fatigue and leg pain that the child experiences. It will also help to allow better performance in activities of daily living or sports. In some cases when conservative treatment fails, surgery can be done to help with the problem. The appropriate treatment plan can be a life-changing experience for the child! Prognosis is excellent, especially with timely management of the problem. Carlo A. July 2016 | OUR CITY pembroke pines

By Mayor Frank C. Ortis

H

urricane season is upon us again and there is so much that all of us need to keep in mind to ensure the safety of our family and our property. Please take the time to prepare now. South Florida has not experienced a major hurricane since 2005 with Wilma, so residents should be vigilant and not complacent this hurricane season, taking into account all hazardous scenarios. Even though Pembroke Pines is not in a coastal evacuation zone, some residents may still be asked to evacuate. Those living in low-lying areas may be required to evacuate due to flooding. All residents of mobile homes must evacuate when a storm reaches hurricane status, and possibly even with tropical storm status. Early arrangements should be made for any elderly family member or those with special needs. A two week supply of needed medications is also recommended. Broward County’s Department of Elderly Services coordinates Special Needs shelters, however, pre-registration is required. In Pembroke Pines, five shelters will be open for those needing to evacuate. The City of Pembroke Pines Emergency Management Team has developed a plan of action that deals with before, during, and after a hurricane or storm. Should the City encounter a direct impact from a hurricane, the goal is to quickly stabilize the situation and provide immediate assistance to residents and businesses. At a recent National Hurricane Conference held in Orlando, the importance of social media’s role in communicating about hurricanes was discussed. The City of Pembroke Pines’ Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ cityofpembrokepines will play a critical role in ensuring that correct and timely information is shared with residents. The City’s website at www.ppines.com also shares important information about preparation and what to do right before, during and after a storm. I am pleased to share with you that Pooches in Pines, a community group of dedicated volunteers in Pembroke Pines that helps unite dogs found by the Pembroke Pines Police with their owners, is now an official charity of our city. As a co-sponsor, we are excited to begin planning a dinner fundraiser in October 2016 to support this wonderful organization. We also invite everyone to celebrate the 4th of July with us at the Pines Recreation Center Festival Grounds located at 7400 Pines Blvd. The festivities will be from 6pm to 9pm. Admission and parking are free at this fun event. There will be the Food Truck Invasion, free rides for children, a children’s area, live musical entertainment by the band Higher Ground, and a spectacular Fireworks Show which begins at 9 p.m. As always, please feel free to contact me at 954-450-1020 or fortis@ppines. com. Again, during this hurricane season, I urge you to not wait for a storm to be upon us - be vigilant and prepare for any hurricane emergencies. And please stay safe this summer.

S

o you’ve decided to put your home on the market and are tempted to try listing it at a higher price in order to “test the market” to see if you can get what you really desire. I recommend that you think twice prior to making this irrational decision. Research indicates that overpricing your home, while having to decrease the price one or more times while it languishes on the market, frequently leads to selling it at a much lower price than what you originally should have asked for it. The longer a home sits on the market, the more appeal it loses and the less you will most likely get for it off the original price. Many homeowners have the tendency to follow their emotions, rather than logic, when setting the initial list price for the property. Their initial pricing decision is typically based on what they paid for their home, the current mortgage balance, the cost to upgrade or beautify the home, or the profit they need to net in order to buy or move to another home. The truth of the matter is that your home is worth only what the market will bear at the time of selling. Pricing your home too high will deter a number of potential buyers from wanting to view it, while others will simply just walk away without making an offer. In order to get to the correct pricing, a potential seller should involve the services of a Realtor; yes, a professional and experienced Real Estate Sales person. Potential “For Sale by Owners” might argue that we live in the age of information technology and anything and everything can be “Googled.” Realtors have access to additional and the most current information that simply cannot be “Googled.” Simply… they are the professionals! In choosing a Realtor to sell your home, one might be tempted to select the one who suggests the highest asking price for the property. Resist the temptation of selecting a Realtor based on pricing and the one who tells you only what you want to hear. The selection should be based on the Realtor who provides critical information, which should include a current Comparative Market Analysis with a rational explanation of how your home should be priced in order to sell quickly and for the highest price possible. Partner with a Realtor and listen to their advice. This should get your home sold for the highest price that the market will bear in the least amount of time possible, while saving you hassles and making the transaction a smooth one from the beginning. This decision is one of the most important monetary decisions you’ll probably make in your lifetime. My advice again is to hire a professional, one who specializes in selling real estate “day in and day out.”

Reporting Work Accidents Legally Speaking

By Mayleidys Porraspita, Esquire

“I

’ve been injured at work. What do I do now?” This is a question many workers struggle with when they are faced with an on-the-job accident or injury. The injured worker is often concerned that he will be labeled as a “complainer” by his co-workers and bosses or, even worse, he fears being fired for having an accident. Other injured workers are unsure if the accident is serious enough to report or even if it is considered a work accident. As the injured worker struggles with these questions, the clock is ticking and they run the risk of cheating themselves out of receiving the benefits they would otherwise be entitled to receive by failing to properly and timely report the accident or injury. In Florida, most employers are required by law to carry Workers’ Compensation insurance. Workers Compensation is a no-fault system and does not require the injured worker, also referred to as the Claimant, to show fault on the employer or a third party in order to secure benefits. Additionally, the law prohibits employers from engaging in retaliatory discharge - firing an employee for reporting a work accident. The Claimant, however, does have one very important responsibility in ensuring that he has a valid claim to medical and lost wage benefits. The injured worker must report the accident or injury to the Employer within 30 days of the accident or the on-set of the injury. Failure to timely report could jeopardize the Claimant’s right to receive benefits under the Worker’s Compensation system. The reporting of the accident or injury must be done directly to their employer or supervisor and not just to a co-worker. The injured worker should ensure that the employer documents the accident or injury. The employer is then required to report the accident/injury to its insurance carrier, which must in turn provide medical care and lost wages to the worker. Due to the complexities of the system, injured workers are often misled at this stage. Although an attorney is not required in order to file a claim for worker’s compensation benefits, those without an attorney are often misinformed of their rights and face unnecessary delays in the medical care they need. The insurance company is in the business of saving money and will often delay and frustrate the Claimant in an effort to force them to simply abandon the claim. A knowledgeable Workers’ Compensation attorney can guide the injured worker through the system ensuring that he receives these benefits. Most importantly, the injured worker is not burdened with the cost of legal representation, since the attorney representing the Claimant only gets paid when benefits are secured for the Claimant and these costs are usually the responsibility of the insurance carrier who has failed to timely and properly provide the benefits. If you or a loved one has been injured at work, feel free to contact our office. The Law Offices of Mayleidys Porraspita, P.A. are located in Pembroke Pines. If you have any questions regarding the matter discussed in the article above or any other Worker’s Compensation question or concern, call our office at 800-492-5455. Hablamos Español.

A

s the summer sun heats up in South Florida, it’s important to protect your skin as much as possible. The harmful UVA and UVB rays from sun exposure accelerate the aging process in the skin resulting in hyperpigmentation, increased wrinkles, and most importantly, increased incidence of skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common cancer with more cases diagnosed each year in the United States than all other cancers combined. There are some misconceptions regarding sun exposure and skin cancer. You can’t get a sunburn on a cloudy day. Clouds only block some of the harmful ultraviolet rays, so a sunburn is still possible. You can’t get skin cancer where the sun doesn’t shine. Skin cancer can appear anywhere on the body, including the hands and feet. Skin cancer only affects light-skinned people. Those who are fair, are at increased risk, but anyone can get skin cancer. Using a tanning bed occasionally is safe. The United States Department of Health and Human Services and World Health Organization have classified a tanning bed as a carcinogen and research suggests that even one session may increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Some sun exposure is essential to Vitamin D metabolism; however, excessive exposure or unprotected exposure can be very harmful. Sunscreen is the obvious first step in protecting your skin. Broad spectrum is best. The FDA requires sunscreen manufacturers to prove that sunscreens protect against ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which are the primary cause of sunburn as well as Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, which can cause premature aging of the skin. Both types of rays have been associated with the development of skin cancer. Choose SPF, or sun protective factor, of 15 or greater. Sunscreen must be applied in adequate amounts to achieve the SPF rating on the label. The recommended amount is 2 mg./cm² – roughly 1 shot glass or 2 tablespoons worth of sunscreen for face and body. Patients who are concerned about obtaining enough sun exposure to make Vitamin D should be aware that current research indicates that 15 minutes of unprotected sun exposure to the midday sun, 3 times a week, is sufficient to synthesize enough Vitamin D to meet our body’s needs. Additionally, remember to protect lips, wear sunglasses with UV protection and wear a wide-brimmed hat. Finally, it is important to get your skin checked periodically by a board certified physician. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Do you have a thoughtful and comprehensive estate plan which includes:

Providing for Minor Children

A

re you a parent with minor children? Your days are busy and your life is full. Probably the last thing you want to imagine is the possibility that someday you may leave for work in the morning, and not return. Who will take care of your children if something happens to you? Or to both of you? Have you even thought about a will or trust? Perhaps that’s something you’d consider when you’re older. You’re young, healthy, and, of course, you plan to be around for a long time: to see your children finish college, to walk your daughter down the aisle, to grow old with your spouse or partner, and to play with your grandchildren. But we are reminded on a daily basis that life doesn’t always

follow a plan. I am often reminded of one of my favorite John Lennon lyrics, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans,” from his song, “Beautiful Boy.” The song was written for his young son, Sean. And, in the same year the song was released, tragedy struck. Lennon was shot and killed in front of his New York apartment. Life doesn’t always follow a plan. As an estate planning attorney, I frequently see the sad consequences of a family facing an unexpected death, made even more difficult when minor children are involved. Does having an estate plan lessen the pain of an expected loss? Of course not. But it does take some of the burden off surviving family members: difficult decisions have already been made, priorities set, helpers designated. An important component of a parent’s estate plan is addressing issues regarding the upbringing of your children. What happens if both you and your spouse die simultaneously, or within a short duration of time? A contingency plan should identify the persons you’d like to manage your assets, as well as the guardian you’d nominate to finish raising your children. In many instances, you may purposely designate different persons to deal with your money and your children so as to maintain a system of checks and balances. You don’t want the probate court deciding who will manage your finances, or to guess whom you’d prefer to raise your children. Other issues to consider are whether you’d like your heirs to receive an inheritance directly, or whether you’d prefer to have the assets placed in trust. Funds from a trust can be distributed based on a number of factors that you designate such as age, need, and/or even incentives based on behavior and education. All too often, children receive substantial assets before they are mature enough to handle them properly, with devastating results. Most importantly, give careful thought to your choice of guardian, ensuring that he or she shares the values you want instilled in your children. Estate planning is a deliberate, premeditated act of love. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M. in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the area of estate planning and probate and trust administration for over 30 years. How Much Will This Cost? By Evan Baron

T

he one question that I am always asked by a prospective client is, “How much will this cost me?” It is obviously a very fair question, which deserves an answer. Unfortunately, often my answer is not well received by the individual. It is not because my answer suggests an extremely large fee, but rather the answer is open ended. I tell them I am unable to give them a complete cost, because billing is based upon the amount of time it will take to conclude the case. The more time, the more work, the higher the fee. I explain that the fee is really controlled by the clients and not the attorneys. If they can reach a fair and equitable agreement, the cost will obviously be less than a contested matter. The more clients litigate, the more money they will spend. I do not “cap” my fees in a divorce action. I have been asked many times to quote a final, 100% complete price. I am unable to accommodate that request. It is unfortunate, but the cost of litigation cannot be determined at the initial meeting. The cost of a divorce can increase based upon a number of factors. It often times is due to an unreasonable expectation by one or both of the clients. Unreasonable expectations often lead to litigation, because a settlement cannot be achieved. Unfair settlement offers can also lead to higher fees, since nobody should settle for an unreasonable and unfair resolution. In addition, some aspects of a divorce case are not even negotiable. As an example, child support is determined by Florida Child Support Guidelines and is statutory. Therefore, the amount of support is not negotiable between the parents. Higher fees can be generated by lack of cooperation or failure to act in a

timely fashion. Financial discovery is an important aspect of a divorce case. There are certain requirements which must be fulfilled within a specific time frame. Many clients get totally stressed out when I hand then their “homework,” which requires gathering certain financial documents and completing a Financial Affidavit. I do understand why it becomes a stressful task. Just because you may be going through a divorce does not mean that all other aspects of your life are put on hold. The financial tasks are time consuming. Many individuals who are going through a divorce are not emotionally ready to deal with the completion of financial documents. Unfortunately, these tasks have to be completed in a timely fashion. Failure to do so will lead to motions being filed and hearings being set before a judge. The result is always additional fees, which should not be necessary; but for the client’s failure to complete the task in a timely manner. These are just some examples of situations which can cause fees to increase. As I stated previously, very often it is the client who controls the cost. Perhaps now you can understand why a set fee in a divorce is not a possibility. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

How to Make Debt Collectors Pay Big Money for Unwanted Telephone Calls (Part 1 of 3) By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. and Kevin Lewis, Esq. Foreclosure Defense, Bankruptcy Protection & Consumer Advocacy Attorneys

A

s the U.S. continues to lick its economic wounds from the recession’s aftermath, millions of consumers are still faced with that ugly 4 letter word — DEBT. Nearly eight out of every ten Americans are in debt, i.e., they owe far more than they own. Debt collectors have created a multibillion dollar industry preying upon the financial hardships of others. While some collection companies are legitimate, many abuse the process daily by harassing debtors, calling multiple times a day, even on weekends, attempting to collect debts. These unscrupulous debt collectors live by the philosophy that if they harass you enough, at some point you’ll simply pay the debt just to get rid of the nuisance. This article, and the articles for the next two months, will address how consumers, through the assistance of knowledgeable counsel, can fight back against debt collectors, and win big money. There are at least three different avenues by which consumers can fight back against harassment and the never ending phone calls by debt collectors -- The Telephone Consumer Protection Act (“TCPA”), the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and the Florida Consumer Collection Practices Act. Each of these, individually or together, when properly presented can result in huge damages in favor of consumers and against debt collectors. In 1991 Congress passed the TCPA. Among other things, this Act restricts debt collectors from using an automated telephone dialing system (“robocalling”) to place calls, or texts to a debtor’s cellular telephone without their consent. Since 1991, however, debt collectors have become more sophisticated, and as a result, new laws have been implemented with the assistance of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), in order to combat the ever-evolving tactics debt collectors use to harass consumers daily. For example, Congress has enacted severe penalties for debt collection practices which allow consumers to collect between $500.00 and $1500.00 per collection call or text! In a recent federal case, the Court ordered a debt collector to pay a consumer $363,500.00 for robo-calling 727 times without express consent. In another case, the same federal court determined that the debt collector should pay $1,500 per each phone call considered “willful and knowing.” In both of these cases, the consumer prevailed, because they hired a knowledgeable attorney in order to assist them with their claims. Claims raised under the TCPA are just one way in which The Arcia Law Firm can assist consumers to obtain a huge recovery against over-reaching debt collectors. Most importantly, when hiring the Arcia Law Firm to handle a TCPA claim, consumers are responsible for zero costs— no money down, no expenses out of pocket. Whether you have been the victim of unwanted telephone calls or texts, or seek assistance with understanding your rights as a consumer faced with harassing debt collection phone calls, our firm will be able to assist you. The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to successfully represent dozens of consumers in our community against unethical and unscrupulous debt collectors. Contact the Arcia Law Firm at 954-437-9066 to schedule your free consultation with Omar Arcia to discuss your case in detail. ollywood Eye Institute provides specialized, comprehensive and courteous ophthalmic care for all ages. Board Certified Physician and Eye Surgeon Shareen M. Greenbaum, M.D. is committed to providing superior care using the most advanced treatments and diagnostic techniques. She is also dedicated to exposing students, such as Sydney Korsunsky, to the ophthalmologic field. Dr. Greenbaum’s practice has grown substantially since it was established in 2012. As a single-practice ophthalmologist, she focuses on intraocular lens implant surgery, ophthalmic plastics, and refractive surgery. Dr. Greenbaum has been involved in multiple research projects and has been published in the peer-reviewed Retina Eye Journal for her research on Photodynamic Therapy for Age-Related Macular Degeneration. She is one of the first surgeons in Broward County to become certified in laser cataract surgery Dr. Greenbaum works with student intern, Sydney Korsunsky technology. Every year, Dr. Greenbaum invites a few dedicated students to shadow her in the field. She enjoys teaching the young medical professionals and helping them reach their highest potential. Sydney, who is majoring in Public Health at the University of Michigan, shadowed Dr. Greenbaum for six weeks this summer. “It was a pleasure to work with Sydney,” said Dr. Greenbaum, who graduated from University of Michigan. “She reminds me a lot of myself 20 years ago. She has already made the decision to pursue a career in medicine and I have no doubt she will make a great physician.” Sydney wanted to learn more about the field of ophthalmology, as well as the daily life and routine of a physician. “Ophthalmology is one of the most technically challenging professions in the medical field,” said Sydney. “The doctor has to work on a very small area with a limited field of vision. One wrong move and the patient could end up without sight.” As a positive role model and mentor, Dr. Greenbaum encourages students to understand the medical field, as well as other fields. “I advise all students to work hard to become well-rounded adults,” said Dr. Greenbaum. “While most pre-med students like to focus on science courses, I encourage them to take additional courses that will broaden their knowledge base.” Dr. Greenbaum, who is a native of Southeast Michigan, attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree with High Distinction, with a major in Spanish language & History. She continued her education at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. She completed her residency training in Ophthalmology at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, where she served as Chief Resident. She is fluent in Spanish. Anyone interested in shadowing Dr. Greenbaum and learning more about the ophthalmic field should call the office to set up an interview. Hollywood Eye Institute is located at 11011 Sheridan Street, #215, in Hollywood. For information, call 954-447-0606 or visit www.hollywoodeyeinstitute.com.

A World of Knowledge Offers Accelerated Learning Programs

40

By Debby Teich

A

World of Knowledge Learning Center (AWOK) is one of the single largest VPK providers in Broward County. The Center offers an accelerated learning program where young children can think, explore and create through age appropriate activities created specifically for the school. Elizabeth Gonzalez, owner/director, answered some commonly asked questions about the Center.

Describe your business. AWOK is recognized as one of the top early

learning centers in Broward County. We provide excellence in early childcare. Our creative ways of teaching through music enable the young learners to obtain new concepts and reach for higher goals, while singing, dancing and having fun. When did you open? We just celebrated 12 years in the community. What ages do you serve? We serve six months to 1st grade. What distinguishes your school from your competitors? Our curriculum was designed for our school. We expose children to higher learning skills in a fun and creative way, incorporating multicultural awareness in all of our lessons. Our school is diverse. Children with little or no knowledge of the English language speak and read English in a few months. Is your method successful? Yes. 95% of our VPK students read before they enter kindergarten. Our first grade graduates are placed in gifted and high achiever programs. Teachers and principals from local schools compliment our students, because they are well prepared with social and academic skills.

July 2016 | OUR CITY pembroke pines

Does the school have a gold seal?

Yes. The school has state gold seal recognition. It is nationally accredited by A.P.P.L.E. and has received an A+ rating each year since the inception of VPK program. AWOK educates close to 100 VPK students each year with proven and successful kindergarten readiness skills and scores. In 2014, AWOK was recognized as one of the top five schools in Florida.

How do you stimulate the children?

Research shows that 90% of the brain develops in the first five years of life. Our goal is to stimulate children in a positive and engaging way and introduce them to new concepts which will help develop a strong foundation for future learning. All children learn in different styles, so we present our concepts in multiple ways so every child is able to learn at their pace. Do you offer summer camp? CAMP WOK is a summer camp for students ages 1-8. It is an educational camp with exiting daily activities, field trips and water days in our own swimming pool. We incorporate educational time throughout the day to assist the children in retaining skills previously learned. We will offer summer camp in our two locations - Pembroke Pines and Davie. A World of Knowledge is located at 750 NW 180 Terrace in Pembroke Pines and 6700 Griffin Road in Davie. It is open from 7am-6pm. For information, call 954-430-7707 or visit www. worldofknowledgekids.com.
