Summer Vacation Is Coming to an End

L

ike most of our readers , my family and I took some time off this summer to unwind and recharge. We spent quality time together as a family, explored new things and re-visited familiar sites, met new people and got reacquainted with old friends. Although we may still be in vacation-mode, it’s time to start getting ready to go Back-to-School. It’s time to download that school supply list and stock up on notebook paper, pencils and erasers, as well as brand new backpacks and lunch boxes. It’s also time to tackle that to-do list: school sports physicals, back-to-school haircuts, and register for after school activities. But, before that first day of school arrives, let’s enjoy the final carefree days of summer with our loved ones. Enjoy the beaches, the backyard pool, or a simple BBQ with friends, because soon enough we’ll be back to the backto-school craziness once again.

Sincerely,

Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

he City of P embroke Pines R ecreation and Cultural A rts D epartment is currently accepting applications for the 10th Annual Art Competition. Area artists can submit paintings, sculptures, watercolors, photography and other mediums for a chance to win cash prizes. A portion of the proceeds from the competition will benefit public art projects in the City of Pembroke Pines. The deadline to enter up to three pieces is August 18. Unlike past years, there will be no theme. “This year we decided to let the creativity really flow,” said Ben Menasche, Curator of the Pembroke Pines Glass Gallery. “We decided against having a theme.” The winning artwork will be on display in the Glass Gallery, from September 24 through November 17. The public is invited to attend an Opening Reception on October 7 at the Glass Gallery. There will be food, beverages and entertainment. Master Chef Summer Desserts Baking Challenge Returns By Debby Teich

Enter your favorite home baked “berry” dessert in the contest.

I

f you have a special summer recipe that gets rave reviews from family and

friends, it may be worth a cash prize. The Master Chef Summer Desserts Baking Challenge is returning to Pembroke Pines and this time it has a new twist. The contest includes summer desserts made with fresh summer berries. The event will be held on August 28, at 10am, at the SW Focal Point Community Center. There is no cost to enter. “This challenge gives home ‘chefs’ the chance to showcase their culinary skills and possibly win a cash prize,” said Helen Daniels, Recreation Division Supervisor. During last summer’s challenge, all desserts had to contain pineapple. There was pineapple better than sex cake, pineapple upside down cake, pineapple bread pudding, pineapple meringue bread pudding, pineapple carrot cake, pineapple cheesecake, pineapple fuzzy navel cake, Hawaiian cake, and more. This year, the key ingredient is summer berries. Desserts can have fresh blueberries, strawberries, blackberries or raspberries. They can contain just one or all four. All desserts must be home baked. No store bought entries are allowed. Prizes will be awarded for the top three “decadently delicious” and “visually

stunning” desserts. All entries will be judged based on appearance, texture and overall flavor. Cash prizes include: 1st ($50), 2nd ($30), and 3rd ($20). Winners will also receive bragging rights as “Master Chef.” Once the judges have tried all of the entries, audience members will have an opportunity to sample them. “We encourage contestants to be creative,” said Daniels. “They should remember that judges are not only looking for the best tasting dessert, they are also looking for the dessert that is beautiful to look at.” The Master Chef Baking Challenge got its start in 2005, when Daniels created the Chocolate Challenge as one of the evening activities at the Valentine’s Dance. In 2012, the Chocolate Challenge was moved to the daytime, so that more members could participate. Last summer, the event was expanded it into a Master Chef Baking Challenge, requiring other key ingredients. “Because of its popularity, we plan on offering more Master Chef Baking Challenges in the future,” said Daniels. Participants must be a member of the SW Focal Point Community Center, which is located at 301 NW 103rd Ave, in Pembroke Pines. It is free to join.

Mayor’s Kids’ Day Is A Success By Debby Teich

M

Pembroke Pines , so do the children. On June 27, more than 1,500 children joined in the fun at the 5th Annual Mayor’s Kids’ Day. The event was made possible by Mayor Frank C. Ortis, as well as a variety of Pembroke Pines businesses that donated free food, sample gifts, and prizes for residents ages 15 and younger. “Mayor’s Kids’ Day is a win-win for everyone,” said Francie Novo, Mayor’s Kids’ Day organizer and Pembroke Pines Special Events Coordinator. “The kids have fun all day and get to meet the Mayor. The parents don’t have to pay anything. The businesses increase foot traffic and get some great exposure.” Kids received a special wristband that entitled them to hunt for deals and freebies from local businesses throughout the city. Some of the things they found

included free bowling, swimming, haircuts, ice cream, mini golf, cookies, breakfast, and more. Businesses also offered discounts on purchases, food samples, raffles and more. Mayor Ortis hosted a free, fun-filled lunch for the children at the Charter High School. They challenged the Mayor in a City Trivia game for prizes. They visited with fire and police personnel, as well as mascots from several of the sponsors. They also tried their luck in the BrightStar money machine, which was filled with valuable prizes. Symphony of the Americas to Host the Mission Chamber Orchestra of Rome in Pembroke Pines By Debby Teich

T

hrough mid -August,

Symphony of the Americas Summerfest 2014 will host the Mission Chamber Orchestra of Rome for 25 performances throughout Florida and the Americas. On August 10, they will perform at the Susan B. Katz Theater for a free concert at 2pm. This is 23rd consecutive summer that Fort Lauderdale›s Symphony of the Americas will present its Summerfest, hosting an acclaimed European chamber orchestra. After performing in 2012, the Mission Chamber Orchestra of Rome will be returning under the baton of Symphony Artistic Director Maestro James BrooksBruzzese. The orchestra will be joined by selected members of the Symphony of the Americas. “It is a great opportunity to see the combined forces of American and European musicians performing a wide variety of classical works that are seldom heard in a ‘free’ setting,” said Maestro Brooks-Bruzzese. The Mission Chamber Orchestra, based in Rome, is an established international musical ensemble. Its musicians are experienced professionals – graduates and faculty members of noted European conservatories, devoted to presenting musical excellence and organizing performances which are of high humanitarian importance. Symphony Summerfest presents Mission Chamber Orchestra of Rome

Chamber Orchestra has a partnership with and performs often in the Vatican. This summer’s orchestral concerts will feature Carnival of Venice, La Bella Cubana, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Sarasate’s Habanera, as well as music of Dohnanyi, Grieg, and Gustav Holst. It will also include world premieres by Italian composer and soloist Lorenzo Turchi-Floris, and Panama composer Juan Castillo. In addition to the performances, Summerfest includes master classes and educational outreach. Last month, Summerfest participants traveled to Panama, where they performed for over 4,000 students that were bused in from all over the country. “This gives them the opportunity to see a live classical concert when most of them may have never seen a live musical performance in their lifetime,” said Maestro Brooks-Bruzzese about his trip to Panama. The Susan B. Katz Theater is located at 17189 Sheridan Street. Tickets are available on a first-come, firstserved basis. For information, visit www.ppines.com/river/index.html or call 954-961-6067. Snapshots from a Superstar Summer at TAG USA Gymnastics

here ’s always something new and exciting going on at TAG USA Gymnastics. This summer, the boys and girls teams had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to train alongside

former US Olympians. Campers got a chance to hang out with these superstars as well. With the school year getting set to start, TAG USA is putting the final touches on two exciting new programs – a

two-a-day team training for homeschooled elite athletes and a new after-school pick-up service. Here’s a snapshot of what’s been happening at TAG USA Gymnastics:

Olympians Visit TAG USA Gymnastics. TAG USA Gymnastics has become

known as the “second home to Olympians” as Nastia Liukin and Jonathan Horton visited the gym. Horton, a 2008 Silver medalist, visited the gym in June and worked out with the boys team. In July, Liukin, a 2008 Gold medalist, helped train the TAG girls team. Both stars hung out, took pictures and signed autographs with campers in the TAG Sports Camp and team athletes.

TAG Starts New Team Training Program.

Team athletes can now train twice a day, starting at 8:30am, under the direction of coaches Alicia Sacramone and Arno van Werven. Gymnasts will complete their schooling through the Florida Virtual School program.

TAG USA Gymnast Maia Zoldan (left), a Level 10 sophomore, has been training at Brestyan’s American Gymnastics Club gym in Boston this summer alongside Raisman, who is training to qualify for the 2016 summer games.

TAG USA Gymnastics is located at 1951 North Commerce Parkway in Weston. TAG USA offers recreational gymnastics classes for children from ages 12 months and up. Pembroke Pines Residents Celebrate Independence Day By Debby Teich

Pembroke Pines to honor the nation’s birthday and celebrate Independence Day. Over 5,000 people attended the celebration at the Pines Recreation Center Festival Grounds, sponsored by the City of Pembroke Pines. Residents relaxed on blankets and lawn chairs, as they listened to the sounds of the Pocket Change Band, enjoyed some of their favorite treats from the Food Truck Round Up, and watched the spectacular fireworks show. There were also free rides and activities for the children. “It was great to celebrate July 4th with family, friends and neighbors,” said Irene Cohen, who attended with her children and grandchildren. At another celebration, over 500 people participated in an all-American afternoon during the annual July 4th B-Bar-Q at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center. Members were served a free BBQ lunch, and enjoyed entertainment, music, dancing and prizes.

PPCES-FSU Students Visit Memorial Hospital Miramar By Debby Teich

S

tudents in two second - grade classes at the

Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary FSU campus will know what to expect if they are ever in need of medical attention at a hospital. For the third consecutive year, students took a field trip to Memorial Hospital Miramar as part of Kids and the Power of Work (KAPOW). KAPOW is designed to connect a student’s classroom learning to their future in the work place. Business volunteers introduce students to career awareness through professionally designed lessons that help students discover different jobs, what it takes to do them, and how to be successful in work and life. Throughout the school year, volunteer and 81-year-old retired chemistry teacher Marie Shotland (aka Grandma Marie) used hands-on fun activities to teach students in Marjorie Lasnetski’s class about the importance of community involvement, leadership, communication and teamwork. For the last lesson, Lasnetski’s students, along with Gloria Pellecer’s students, took a trip to Memorial Hospital Miramar. “Many children are fearful of the hospital,” said Barbara Williams, RN in

Emergency Services and Partners in Education liaison for Memorial Miramar Hospital. “We want to alleviate those fears and let them know that the hospital is a place that helps them feel better.” The children toured the lab, where they looked at red and white blood cells under a microscope. In the pediatric emergency room, they discussed what they can expect if they ever have to visit, from arrival to release. In the adult emergency room, they saw where their parents would go for medical attention. In the X-Ray room, a technician showed them x-rays and explained how an x-ray machine works. The students also participated in a hands-on “Teddy Bear Clinic,” where they learned how to put on a cast, draw blood, insert an IV and give an injection. They also spent time with Compass, a golden retriever therapy dog that works with the children at the hospital. “The children saw people working in real jobs,” said Lasnetski. “It brought the KAPOW lessons to life so they could see that all the skills Marie taught them were essential to have when they grow up and get jobs.” KAPOW is always looking for business or individual volunteers, as well as schools interested in participating in the program. For information, visit www.kapowlfs.org; send an email to john.casbarro@gmail.com or call 954-680-3916.

am quite aware that the last thing most people would ever

want to do in their lifetime is hire an attorney. Except for the purchase of a home or business, for the most part the hiring of an attorney is necessary only when a crisis occurs. It could be due to an accident, a run in with the law, a death in the family or a divorce. On occasion, individuals may feel as if an attorney is not really necessary. Unfortunately, handling a legal matter without advice from an attorney can often mean unwanted results. So, how does someone decide if they need an attorney? And, if so, who should they hire? Recently, I have met with several individuals who have either attempted to handle their particular matter without the assistance of an attorney or they have been unhappy with the representation they have received from the attorney they in fact did hire. In most of these situations, I was not able to assist them in “undoing” the unwanted result. For the most part, we do not get a “do over” in court. Once a decision is made by a judge, it is in most instances a final decision. The fact that an individual feels that his/her attorney did not properly represent him/ her will not be considered grounds to overturn the court’s decision. Neither will the fact that a person was unrepresented in court. Unless you are prepared to file an appeal, most people get one chance to present their case and obtain their desired results. If the decision has been made to retain an attorney, how do you choose the one that is right for you? In my opinion, you should look for someone who has experience in the field of law that concerns your case. In most instances, however, the most important factor is cost. In some areas of practice, the total fee for representation can be determined at the beginning of the case. In criminal matters, there is usually a set fee quoted; depending on the severity of the offense charged. In personal injury matters, fees are usually based upon the amount recovered, with a percentage going to the attorney. These fees are called contingency fees.

In family law matters, fees are usually determined by the time necessary to finalize the case. This often presents a problem when I discuss fees at my initial consultation. Understandably, a prospective client wants to know what a divorce is going to cost. I explain that since my fees are based upon my time, I cannot predict the total fee unless I know the number of hours a case will take to get to completion. Not knowing the total cost of representation can make a person insecure. A retainer or down payment is required to get the case started. It is made clear to the new client that this is only a down payment and is not necessarily the total cost. Each case is different and each attorney may have different billing practices. It is best to “shop around” and find the attorney who is best suited for your particular set of circumstances. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

he pelvic floor is a group of muscles that are located at

the bottom of the pelvis. These muscles stretch from the pubic bone to the tailbone or coccyx (front to back) and from hip bone to hip bone (side to side). As the floor of the core, these muscles have several important functions: support of the internal organs, conscious control over the bladder and bowels, and sexual function. Weakness of the pelvic floor is associated with pregnancy and delivery, obesity, genetics, hysterectomy, age, menopause, a sedentary lifestyle, and heavy lifting. Common symptoms of pelvic floor muscle weakness include leakage of urine or stool (incontinence), strong sensations to empty to the bladder, and frequent urination. In addition to poor bladder and bowel control, decreased support of the pelvic floor muscles may cause a prolapse or protrusion of the bladder, bowels, or uterus into the vaginal canal.

Offering specialized nonsurgical and minimally invasive surgery for: • Urine leakage • Post-pregnancy pelvic muscle weakness • Frequent urine infections • Difficulty urinating • Bowel leakage • Dropped pelvic organs • Overactive bladder • Chronic pelvic pain • Pelvic mesh complications Fellowship trained in Urogynecology

Kegel exercises can help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles.

Women with pelvic organ prolapse may experience pelvic pressure, vaginal pain, a bulge or lump in the vagina, urinary incontinence, stool incontinence, and difficulty emptying the bladder or bowels. Many women see these changes as natural aspects of aging that cannot be changed; however, there are many treatments available. One of the most innovative and noninvasive treatments is pelvic floor physical therapy. Many women favor physical therapy as treatment because instead of just managing symptoms, it works to restore natural bowel and bladder function. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, a physical therapist with specialized training in pelvic floor muscle dysfunction can provide the tools to decrease, if not eliminate, your symptoms. Most medical insurance plans will cover this therapy. A pelvic floor physical therapist will perform a musculoskeletal assessment to determine the factors that may be contributing to your pelvic floor disorder. The therapist will provide education on behavioral and dietary changes to help improve your quality of life. Finally, patients will be given an individualized treatment regimen that may include therapeutic exercises (i.e. Kegel’s, core stabilization), manual therapy to address joint or soft tissue abnormalities, and modalities such as electrical stimulation and biofeedback training. Dr. Kelly McArthur, DPT, CKTP is a Physical Therapist with specialized training in pelvic floor muscle dysfunction and pre/post-partum physical therapy. She is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association’s Section on Women’s Health (SOWH) and the Florida Physical Therapy Association (FPTA). She currently provides pelvic floor physical therapy to the patients of Dr. Jennifer Pollak, MD and Dr. Karen Soules, MD at the Florida Center for Urogynecology. Offices are located at 4340 Sheridan Street, Suite 201 in Hollywood and 601 N. Flamingo Road, Suite 101 in Pembroke Pines. How to Defend Against and Eliminate Deficiency Judgments By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

T

he most recent increasing trend in cases coming into our office are “ defi ciency judgment” actions brought against homeowners AFTER a foreclosure, short sale or deed in lieu. If you were foreclosed out of your home, completed a short sale or returned your property to the bank through a deed in lieu, the bank may still sue you for the difference between what you owe under the mortgage and the value of the property in question. That is called a deficiency judgment, and if not properly defended, can lead to garnishment of wages, levying of bank accounts and repossession of vehicles. There are several key ways you can defend against or eliminate deficiency judgments altogether. The first and most effective way of defending against a deficiency judgment is based upon a recently enacted law in Florida which requires that, as of July 1, 2013, a deficiency judgment action be brought within one year of a final judgment, short sale or deed in lieu, instead of the previous law that allowed up to five years to bring a deficiency judgment action. If properly presented in court, the new one year law can be used to stop a deficiency judgment action in its tracks. The second line of defense against a deficiency judgment is to challenge the right of the party bringing the action to collect on the judgment. Lenders often sell the right to a deficiency judgment to collection agencies, but the transfer may be entirely ineffective for failure to comply with legal formalities. If properly challenged, the new “pretender lender” may voluntarily dismiss their deficiency judgment action, and you may even be entitled to recover your attorney’s fees.

Of course, one sure-fire way to eliminate any deficiency judgment is to file for bankruptcy protection at the first suggestion anyone is attempting to seek a deficiency against you. Once you file a bankruptcy, not only will all legal proceedings stop instantly, but when you receive a discharge in bankruptcy, your mortgage deficiency, all credit card, medical, and all other unsecured debt is forever eliminated. Defending a foreclosure, deficiency judgment and filing for bankruptcy are NOT do-it-yourself propositions. The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm have more than 40 years combined litigation and trial experience, and we are privileged to successfully represent hundreds of homeowners in our community. We have foreclosure defense, loan modification and bankruptcy departments all in the same office. We will gladly refer you to our satisfied clients so you can be confident in your decision to hire our Firm. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free personal consultation with Omar Arcia, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com to schedule your appointment online

Redefining Facial Rejuvenation By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

L

ifestyle lift,

S-Lift, Whisper lift, Feather lift, etc . The names go on and on, but these procedures are almost identical. Cosmetic surgeons will change the name of a straightforward procedure in an attempt to gain new patients, attract attention to “their” practice, or to lure an uneducated patient into thinking that “their” procedure is somehow “better” than what has been done thousands of times before by well-qualified plastic surgeons. I will attempt to clarify this terminology with an explanation of facelift technique and indications. The original “facelift procedure” was performed by Dr. Eugen Höllander in 1901, and involved elevating with tightening the facial skin only. The procedure has evolved and undergone multiple transformations. Today, a facelift typically involves elevation of the skin on cheek and neck with tightening of the underlying muscle (the SMAS in the cheek and the platysma on the neck). The 21st Century approach to facial rejuvenation focuses on a structured reconstruction, as well with fat grafting and tissue tightening. As the skin ages, there is a progressive loss of collagen and elastic which results in increased skin laxity. This skin change, coupled with loss of the underlying soft tissue volume, results in prominent nasolabial folds, jowls, and neck bands. In order to improve the appearance of the face and neck, a skin tightening procedure should be performed. This can be accomplished several ways - lifting and removing excess skin, a skin resurfacing procedure with laser or chemical peel, or restoring loss of soft tissue volume with fat or synthetic fillers. These techniques can be used alone or in a combination depending on each person’s individual facial anatomy and appearance goals. In describing face lifting procedures, the facial skin is elevated, the underlying muscle called the SMAS is tightened and the excess skin is removed. When the skin laxity is limited to the cheek area, a mini – or short-scar facelift, can be performed (scar is limited to the area in the front of the ear). If neck skin laxity and neck bands are present, additional incisions can be made behind the ear and under the chin. This technique is referred to as a full facelift, or face and neck lift. The Lifestyle lift and S-Lift have similar incisions with limited underlying or elevation of the face and neck skin. If there is heaviness or sagging of the eyebrow, then a brow lift or forehead lift is performed. The aging appearance of the upper and lower eyelids is treated with a blepharoplasty and is a separate procedure from a facelift. In certain cases, depending on the patient’s facial appearance, a facelift is performed in combination with soft tissue volume addition by fat transfer, skin smoothing with a chemical peel or laser resurfacing. All of the procedures can be performed under local anesthesia, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s medical history and comfort level. The most important factors to consider when making a decision to have elective cosmetic surgery are the surgeon, the facility, and the anesthesia provider. Only have facial plastic surgery by a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery in an accredited outpatient facility or hospital. Anesthesia should be administered by a licensed, board certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA). Facial rejuvenation surgery can be performed safely and effectively under the correct circumstances. Don’t get caught up in the marketing tactics of “cosmetic” doctors who may not have the credentials or experience to perform injections or surgical procedures they advertise. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and consultant for Allergan Medical and has achieved Black Diamond Level as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. To schedule your consultation with Dr. Messa, call the office at 954-659-7760.

pproximately 85% of men by the age of 50 and 40% of women after menopause will experience some form of significant hair loss. Normal hair loss ranges from 50-100 strands of hairs per day. Under normal circumstances, these hairs are continuously replacing themselves to maintain an individual’s normal appearance. By the time an individual begins to notice their hair is thinning, they have usually lost approximate 50% of their hair density in that area. It is always important to have a professional evaluation in order to determine the cause of the hair loss. The following summarizes some of the most common reasons people lose their hair: ▸▸ Ninety five percent of hair loss in men is due to male patterned baldness, also known as Androgenic Alopecia. This condition increases the susceptibility of hair to the effects of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which has been implicated in hair loss. This is a genetic disease that may be passed down from an individual’s maternal or paternal side of the family. There is also a female patterned baldness that is affected by DHT; however, this follows a different clinical course than in men. ▸▸ Telogen Effluvium is another common cause of hair loss. This form is usually caused by excessive stress from either a physical or emotional source. Some common examples are: hair loss after major surgery, pregnancy, extreme weight loss, poor nutrition, severe illness, etc. Telogen Effluvium usually occurs between six weeks to three months after the inciting event and generally leads to diffuse thinning of hair. Once the stress is removed, the negative effect of hair loss usually stops and slowly reverses. ▸▸ Hypothyroidism (slow functioning thyroid gland) is another cause of hair loss. The thyroid gland is responsible for regulating the metabolism of the whole body, including skin, hair and nails. If the hormone levels are excessively low, this will lead to progressive hair loss over time. Replacing the hormone levels back to optimal ranges helps reverse the hair loss slowly over time. ▸▸ Smoking, yes smoking! Hair loss may be another reason to put down those cigarettes. Regular tobacco use may accelerate the process of thinning hair that men and women experience as they age. So put down those cigarettes and your hair will thank you for it, as well as your heart, lungs, brain, skin, etc. ▸▸ Medications have also been implicated with hair loss. The list of medications that lead to hair loss is extensive. It includes prescription and nonprescription drugs. Although it would be impossible to list all medications that may cause this, some of the common drugs implemented are: cancer treatment drugs, anti-inflammatory agents, birth control pills, anti-depressants, steroids and more. The good news relating to this form of hair loss is that once the culprit medication is stopped, hair generally starts to grow back. The effects of hair loss from a drug can be seen as early as a few days after starting treatment, or up to several months afterward. These are just a few of the causes that we know can lead to hair loss. So if you are experiencing hair loss, see a specialist for further evaluation and treatment recommendations. You’d be surprised at the different options available today.

Ankle Ligament Injuries in Children

Pembroke Pines Update

By Robert H. Sheinberg, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.

L

igament injuries to the ankle are more common in children than previously thought. The ligaments connect bones together. When the ligament stretches beyond its elastic limit, partial or complete tears develop. The most common ligament injury in the ankle is due to a twisting injury of the foot down and in. This can occur from sports, twisting the foot under the leg in a hole or even falling off of a shoe. These injuries may be associated with mild growth plate injuries. Usually the ligament injury or the growth plate is the more dominant problem. A thorough evaluation will best determine the injured part and the extent of it. Because the ligaments in the ankle connect below the growth plate it was more commonly thought that growth plates are weaker than ligaments and when twisting occurs the growth plate usually gets injured. With the increased participation in sports at a very young age the frequency of ankle ligament injuries has been rising. Signs and symptoms include low-grade to diffuse swelling present along the front part of the outer ankle. Swelling may be present on the inner ankle in severe outer ankle sprains. It may also be present with an inner ankle sprain where the foot turns down and in. Symptoms also include immediate difficulty weightbearing. Discoloration to the ankle and foot may develop a few days later. Immediate evaluation is necessary to determine the extent of the injury. The foot, ankle and leg are examined to determine which ligament is injured and the degree of injury associated with it. Testing of the ligament’s integrity is also performed to further assess the damage. Examination of the growth plates, tendons and bones around the ankle are also performed to determine any associated injuries. X-rays are necessary to determine if there are any associated bone injuries. Growth plates are evaluated to see if they are out of position. MRIs are rarely necessary as a good clinical exam usually provides all the necessary information in formulating a diagnosis and treatment plan. An MRI is done only if there is suspicion of a cartilage injury that cannot be assessed via a clinical examination or x-ray. Immediate care is necessary to prevent any long-term problems. Mild injuries associated with minimal swelling may be treated with rest, ice, elevation and an ankle brace. Moderate injuries in which a partial tear has occurred may necessitate immobilization for two to six weeks in a removable boot or hard cast. Severe injuries need to be immobilized in a hard fiberglass cast for four to six weeks to allow the ligaments to heal properly. Physical therapy following bracing or cast removal is necessary to improve muscle strength, ankle stability, joint proprioception and to restore complete ankle motion. If left untreated, chronic instability commonly develops. Recurring twisting injuries then occur with minimal stress. This will require chronic use of an ankle brace and physical therapy. In most cases surgery would be necessary to surgically reconstruct the ligaments in the ankle and allow a full return to activity.

August 2014 | Our City Pembroke PInes

By Mayor Frank C. Ortis

I

August. It will soon be time to say goodbye to summer and hello to fall. I hope everyone had a wonderful summer and was able to get out and enjoy all the amenities that the City of Pembroke Pines has to offer. I encourage all Pines residents to visit the Parks and Recreations web page at www.ppines.com for upcoming events in the coming months. In a few weeks, many of our residents will be making the transition from the lazy days of summer to the 2014-2015 school year. This can be chaotic for your kids and for parents. A little planning can go a long way. Principals, teachers, aids and staff in schools throughout Pembroke Pines will soon be busy preparing for the start of a new school year. Here are a few tips that can make a difference in promoting a smooth transition back to school. t is hard to believe that it is already

▸▸ A few weeks before school starts, move bedtime back to an early time. ▸▸ Put a positive spin on going back to school by talking about fun things the child will learn, the old friends he’ll see, and the new friends he’ll make. ▸▸ If you child is anxious about starting the next grade, reassure her that other children also have these feelings. ▸▸ Don’t make plans for big trips right before the start of school. ▸▸ Arrange play dates with friends from school to re-establish connections that may have been dropped for the summer. ▸▸ Get organized by filling out forms, buying school supplies, getting necessary immunizations and reading through the school information. ▸▸ Establish a “get ready the night before” policy. ▸▸ Prepare for homework ahead of time by setting routines and arranging a place to study. This will help your child become more organized and successful in school.

Most importantly, parents should encourage their children to do their best. Getting ready to go back to school is more than back-to-school shopping. It is also an emotional process. It is one that can help everyone in the family enjoy and appreciate summer fun all the more. Enjoy the remaining days of summer and have a stress-free 2014-2015 school year! If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 954-435-6505 or fortis@ ppines.com.

If detected, you have become an excellent candidate for GenesisPlus. GenesisPlus passes through the nail and the surrounding tissue with no adverse effects. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment in the fungi, which causes the pigment to heat, and this kills or damages the fungal organism. The treatment can result in your nails growing normally. A single treatment session takes approximately 40 minutes to treat five to ten nails. Most patients show improvement after one treatment and total number of treatments can vary. Most patients describe the procedure as being comfortable with a small hot pinch at the end which resolves quickly. The majority of patients can resume normal activities immediately. Successful treatment results in new nail growth and healthy nails, which may take up to 12 months. Dr. Neal M. Bullock’s office is located at 17013 Pines Boulevard, in Pembroke Pines. The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely on advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.

to have one in place – it is not just for the “rich.” Estate planning is not only about the money and property you own, but it also controls who is to receive your property and who you want to handle your affairs upon death or incapacity. If you do not have a proper estate plan in place, state law controls who is allowed to inherit your property and even, who could become your minor children’s legal guardian.

Estate Planning: It’s About Family Dynamics Too! Estate planning is commonly referred to a set of documents which anticipate and arrange for the disposal of your estate. It eliminates any uncertainties over the administration and guardianship of your loved ones and in most cases, maximizes the value of the estate by reducing taxes and other expenses. I run into people all the time that state “I am not rich so I don’t need an estate plan.” And my response it usually “do you have minor children?” If they answer yes, then estate planning documents are very important. But even if they answer no, there are usually persuasive reasons

For example, a designation of health care surrogate is essential in cases of incapacitation. It controls who is allowed to make medical decisions on your behalf. Let’s say that you are in a long-term relationship with someone and have decided not to marry, then upon your incapacitation, your significant other may not be allowed to make medical decisions on your behalf. Because without this document, state law states that medical decisions can only be made by your next of kin (whoever that may be in your family). Remember the Terri Shiavo case? Similarly, a Last Will and Testament can designate a legal guardian for your children should something happen to you or your spouse, or both. State law may name a person you do not trust or would not consider to be fit to take care

of your children. Another reason you may want to consider having an estate plan in place is to lessen the financial and psychological impact on your family upon death. Probate is the legal process of administering the estate of a deceased person. It is meant to settle all claims of the estate and is meant to ensure the rightful distribution of the deceased person’s property. Probate is a lengthy and costly process and is sometimes absolutely necessary. For example, if you pass away owning a bank account without having designated a beneficiary and you did not have an estate plan, your family will have to open up a probate in order to access your bank accounts. This is just one example where a probate would be necessary. Most times, opening up a probate costs too much money and families sometimes just end up forfeiting these bank accounts. With a proper estate plan, your loved ones may be able to avoid the lengthy process all together. Every person and family’s situation is different. Call my offices to set up a free initial consultation to explore a beneficial estate plan for you and your family.

Silver Isles Cleaners Opens in Cooper City By Debby Teich

S

ince 2005, S ilver I sles C leaners has been offering dry cleaning, shirt laundering and more. They deliver high quality, personalized service at each of the three locations in Miramar and Cooper City.

Jaime Z. Bendeck, President/Owner, answered some commonly asked questions about Silver Isles Cleaners.

Silvia Alfonso (front desk), Jaime Bendeck (owner) and Myriam Orozco (front desk) serve customers with the same professional service offered at the other locations.

When did you open? Silver Isles Cleaners has been open since 2005. We have two locations in Miramar. In February, we opened our newest location in the Countryside Shops in Cooper City.

What services do you offer? We provide a variety of services, such as: dry cleaning, hand-finished business shirts that are creased and pinned individually; expert alterations; expert shoe repair and polish; high end handbag/purse repair and shampoo; expert leather cleaning and repair; drapes, rug and curtain cleaning; wedding gown cleaning and boxed preservation; shoe dyeing and tinting; comforter cleaning; and more. What distinguishes you from your competition? My staff and I always strive to meet our customers’ strict demands for timeliness, quality and service. Our goal is to finish business shirts better than any other cleaners in the area by paying close attention to details, such as pinned and well-formed collars, as well as creased and pinned shirt sleeves. We never place more than four shirts in a bag and carefully inspect the clothing prior to placing it inside. We also

offer alterations, handbag cleaning and shoe repair services to complement our clothing cleaning services. How do you handle specific customer requests? Our system has the capability of storing customer information about how they want clothing cleaned, pressed or packaged. We note special requests on the account and invoices, such as “crease on all pants,” “do not use paper cover under the bag” or “check cuffs for no crease.” We want to make sure that customers are satisfied on each visit. How do you make your services convenient for customers? We notify many of our customers by email/text when their orders are ready. This creates a better customer experience, since they know in advance if their clothing is ready before attempting to pick it up. Regular customers can buy express bags, which come with a name tag. This allows them to drop their clothing knowing that it will be properly handled. We are also able to send customers their invoices by email, which saves them wait time, as well as a little paper. Do you offer coupons? We have ongoing deals on our website for those who love our service, but are price conscious. Stores are located at: Countryside Shops, 5850 S. Now open in the Countryside Shops in Cooper City. Flamingo Road, Cooper City, 954-434-6545; Shoppes at Silver Isles, 16375 Miramar Parkway, Miramar, 954499-4545; and Miramar Town Center, 2405 Main Street, Miramar, 954-241-2455. The hours of operation are: Monday-Friday, 7am–7pm, and Saturday, 8am–6pm. For information, visit www.silverislescleaners. com or www.facebook.com/silverislescleaners, or send an email to service@silverislescleaners.com.
