7th Annual Mayor’s Kids’ Day Is A Success SECTION HEAD Community News
By Debby Teich
M
others and fathers have their own special day. In Pembroke Pines, so do the children. Over 1,000 children recently joined in the fun at the 7th Annual Mayor’s Kids’ Day. The event was made possible by Mayor Frank C. Ortis, as well as over 60 Pembroke Pines businesses. The event was presented by Baptist Medical Plaza of Pembroke Pines. “Mayor’s Kids’ Day is an event that families and businesses look forward to all year,” said Francie Novo, Mayor’s Kids’ Day organizer and Pembroke Pines Special Events Coordinator. “Businesses are able to increase their foot traffic, as they showcase their products and services to a captive audience. Parents and kids can enjoy a day filled with free fun. This event makes all the kids in Pembroke Pines feel like a VIP.” Residents, ages 15 and younger, received a special wristband that
entitled them to hunt for deals and freebies from local businesses throughout the city. Some of the things they found included: Fun Stop at Baptist Medical Plaza, 8oz. Menchies at the Menchies East location, Publix cake, a 6” sub coupon from Subway, Child ID, samples and prizes at Whole Foods, swimming and mini golf, discounts at Build-A-Bear, and a Raffle with over 40 prizes at Pembroke Lakes Mall. There was a free, fun-filled lunch from Mayor Ortis at the City of Pembroke Pines Charter High School. Children had an opportunity to take photos with mascots, participate in a Running man dance off and much more. Several children were randomly selected to participate in the Bright Star Money Machine.

Symphony of the Americas Summerfest 2016 Presents Free Concert in Pembroke Pines By Debby Teich
T
hrough August 10, Symphony of the Americas Summerfest 2016 will celebrate its 25th anniversary with one month of performances throughout Florida and the Americas. Activities include concerts, master classes, and educational outreach, taking the sounds of the ensemble to audiences in corners of the world that have never before experienced a live orchestral performance. On August 9, at 7pm, the City of Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department and Arts & Culture Advisory Board will bring the orchestra to
Pembroke Pines for a free concert at the Susan B. Katz Theater. This festival will highlight the “Best of the Best.” The Summerfest Chamber Orchestra will feature musicians and soloists who have participated in this Festival over the past 25 years, including orchestras such as the Arpeggione Chamber Orchestra of Austria, the Mission Chamber Orchestra of Rome, Hungarian Virtuosi, Italy’s I Musici and more. Representing more than 10 different countries, they perform several styles of classical and popular music for strings. They are all joined in cultural exchange by principal musicians of our own Symphony of the Americas. Under the baton of Symphony Artistic Director, Maestro James BrooksBruzzese, orchestral concerts feature the music of Vivaldi, Mozart, Bloch, Fuchs, Piazzolla tangos, a commissioned piece by Italian composer Lorenzo TurchiFloris, a special arrangement of Latin favorites by Latin Grammy Award winning composer Eduardo Magallanes of Mexico, and more. Other soloists include Summerfest’s Concertmaster Orlando Forte of Cuba; violinist Svetlana Forte and Symphony of the Americas principal flutist, Marilyn Maingart. They also include Georgian violinist Sandro Tigishvili, who will be featured soloist in an American premiere - an arrangement for strings of the Concertino by Georgian composer Otar Taktakishvili that the Symphony of the Americas commissioned Tigishvili to write and premiere for the Summerfest 25th anniversary. Carolyn Kolben has attended the free concerts for the past few years. “Last year’s performance was incredible and I look forward to attending again this year,” said Kolben. “I feel fortunate to live in a city that offers such a wonderful variety of free cultural events.” The Susan B. Katz Theater is located at 17195 Sheridan Street. For information, call 954-986-5027. Pembroke Pines Police Department Reaches Out to the Community SECTION HEAD Community News
By Debby Teich
T
he Community Affairs Unit of the Pembroke Pines Police Department (PPPD) offers a variety of free educational programs for Pembroke Pines pre-school, elementary, middle and high school students, as well as for the entire community. “People are surprised by how much our department has to offer,” said Cheryl Watters of the PPPD Community Affairs Unit. Some of the programs include: ▸▸ School Visits - Specialized units (SWAT, Dive and Rescue, Traffic, and K-9 teams) visit schools on Career Days and show off their unique vehicles and gear. They explain about their units, as well as the requirements to become a Pembroke Pines Police Officer. They provide opportunities for students to have personal and positive interactions with police officers. ▸▸ Student of the Month - Each month, school principals at all Pembroke Pines elementary schools select one student that has met the requirements set forth by the Police Department. Students attend a ceremony at Pembroke Pines Police Headquarters, where they receive a certificate and a goodie bag. ▸▸ Car Seat Safety Checks - Anyone who drives with a child in a car seat should schedule a free appointment for a car seat safety check, on Monday or Wednesday, from 9am and 4pm, at PPPD headquarters. The car seat safety checks are performed by a SAFEKids certified Safety Seat Technician. ▸▸ Puppet Shows – Young children can learn about safety through a series of puppet skits (Stranger Danger, Traffic Safety, and Stop Drop & Roll) and interaction with Crime Dog McGruff the Crime Fighting Dog. ▸▸ Police Explorers Program - Young men and women, ages 14 through 20, can learn about police work, train and compete in Explorer skills competitions around the state and county, and volunteer with officers at local community events. The Explorers
meet every Wednesday evening, from 6:30pm to 9pm, at PPPD headquarters. ▸▸ Citizens Police Academy – Pembroke Pines Citizens Police Academy is a 15-week comprehensive overview of law enforcement for residents 18 years and older. Now in its 21st year, the CPA has graduated over 1,200 residents and/or business owners/employees and has an active alumni program. Classes are offered twice a year for 15 weeks, one night per week. The CPA Alumni members meet on the third Tuesday of the month at 7pm (except July & August) at PPPD headquarters. ▸▸ Pines Night Out – Residents can meet their local police officers and firefighters, try on gear, enjoy treats and have a safe night out with the family. The free crime prevention safety party and costume contest will be held on October 28, from 6pm-9pm, at Walter C. Young Middle School. ▸▸ Miscellaneous programs - CAU staff presents programs for Home Owners Associations, businesses and service organizations. Some of the topics include personal safety, identity theft, home crime prevention and hurricane preparedness. Pembroke Pines Police headquarters is located at 9500 Pines Boulevard. To reach the Pembroke Pines police in an emergency, dial 911. For more information on the Community Affairs Unit, visit ppines.com or call 954-436-3274 or send an email to CAU@ppine.com.
Southern Handcraft Society Seeks New Members By Debby Teich
A
lthough most people today are focused on electronics, members of the Southern Handcraft Society’s Pembroke Pines chapter still meet to explore their love of arts and crafts. The group is currently looking for new members (ages 12 and up), with or without crafting experience, who are interested in joining. “It’s fun to be around such a wonderful group of happy women who love sharing friendship, crafting and the joys of life,” said Mary Stephens, who has been a member for over 11 years. “Whether you have experience crafting or not does not matter. If you enjoy creating, you will have fun with this wonderful group.” Established in 1988, there are approximately 30 members in the Pembroke Pines chapter that range from teenagers to seniors. They join to learn more about knitting, quilting, jewelry making, beading, glass etching, woodwork and other handmade items, as well as to be surrounded by others who share their passion and want to have fun doing it. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at 7pm, at the Southwest Focal Point Senior

There is also a Show and Tell, where members bring in something they made at home and discuss the technique with the group. At the end of the meeting, there is a group drawing for items the members have donated. Every fall, members can participate in the SHS Annual Craft Show at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center. They contribute items that are sold to help raise money for the non-profit group. They also have an opportunity to sell some of their own items for profit. Many of the members get together on Tuesday nights to work on projects for the annual show. Members can also participate in an annual retreat organized by the Society’s six chapters, which are located from Miami to West Palm Beach. They spend an entire day crafting, learning new techniques, sharing ideas, and having fun. Each chapter provides a “make-it and take-it” project. Many of the members leave with baskets from the infamous drawings. The Southwest Focal Point Community Center is located at 301 N.W. 103 Avenue. Find Bargains at the Flea Market and Bazaar SECTION HEAD Community News
By Debby Teich
B
argain hunters from near and far are expected to meet at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center in Pembroke Pines for the Flea Market and Bazaar. They will have an opportunity to search through tables of treasures from over 100 venders in an indoor, air conditioned room. The event will be held on August 20, from 8am-4pm, and August 21, from 9am-3pm. Admission and parking are free. Proceeds will benefit senior programs. “This Flea Market and Bazaar is a collectors and bargain hunters dream,” said Helen Daniels, Activities Division Supervisor. “With over 100 vendors, all sorts of treasures can be found!” There will be thousands of household items, toys, clothing, jewelry, record albums, baseball cards, tea pots, baby blankets and much more. There will also be food available in Emilio’s Café. Buyers are encouraged to come early, since a large crowd of people always forms before the doors open. Most know what they are looking for and want to be the first to find it. Marty Abel has attended for the past four years. “I am always searching for bargains on antique furniture and old record albums,” said Abel. “I usually find both! It is nice to be able to attend a flea market in the cool
indoors instead of outside in the heat.” The Flea Market and Bazaar is held four times a year. It helps to raise funds for senior programs at the SWFP Community Center, which provides the community with a wide range of programs and activities that promote physical and mental stimulation, encourage socialization, cultural education and intellectual enrichment. The Center is committed to offering quality comprehensive services and updated programs that respond to the changing needs within our diverse communities. The Southwest Focal Point Community Center is located at 301 NW 103rd Avenue, in Pembroke Pines. Membership for adults 18 and older is free, but required. “By responding to changing needs, we are changing lives every day,” said Daniels. “Whether it’s learning how to establish a fitness and nutrition routine, learning a new language, or just learning for personal growth and enrichment, the SWFP Community Center is here to serve our community.” For information, call 954-450-6888 or visit www.ppines.com, click on Departments and select Community Services.

Pembroke Pines Residents Celebrate Independence Day By Debby Teich
F
amilies and friends gathered throughout Pembroke Pines to honor the nation’s birthday and celebrate Independence Day. Over 5,000 people attended the celebration at the Pines Recreation Center Festival Grounds, sponsored by the City of Pembroke Pines. Residents relaxed on blankets and lawn chairs, as they listened to free entertainment, enjoyed treats from the Food Truck Round Up, and watched the fireworks show. There were also free rides and activities for the children. At another celebration, over 600 people participated in an all-American afternoon during the Annual July 4th B-Bar-Q at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center. Members enjoyed a BBQ lunch, entertainment and dancing. Emilio’s BBQ grilled hamburgers and hot dogs. Many helped serve the food, including student and center volunteers, members of Saint Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church Knights of Columbus Council # 11410 and Pembroke Pines Vice Mayor and World War II Veteran Carl Shechter. The event was underwritten by the Senior Residence Advisory Board. Members arrived dressed in their finest red, white and blue in hopes of winning the “Best Patriotic” outfit contest. This year’s winners were Norberto Alabastro and Mabel “Lisa” Sangal. “Our members had a fantastic time celebrating the 4th of July,” said Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing for the City of Pembroke Pines. “This year’s celebration was more colorful than ever. The event was filled with fun and friendship and the dancing only stopped when it was time for our DJ to leave.” For information, visit www.ppines.com.

City of Pembroke Pines Mourns Orlando Victims SECTION HEAD community news
By Debby Teich
T
he City of Pembroke Pines held a vigil to remember the 49 victims and more than 50 injured in the Orlando nightclub shooting. Approximately 300 residents gathered on the steps of Pembroke Pines City Hall for a candlelight ceremony. They included families, strangers, friends, neighbors and co-workers. They were both young and old, and represented a wide variety of cultures, faiths and professions. Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis and the City Commission hosted the ceremony. Mayor Ortis spoke about the importance of respect and tolerance at the ceremony, Pastor Peter Tokar led a prayer service and Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Department Color Guard held a Presentation of Colors. After candles were distributed to the crowd, many were brought to tears as the names of the 49 victims were called. “It is time to put an end to all of this senseless violence,” said Pembroke Pines resident Peter Scranton, who knew one of the victims. “We are all different and we must all learn to be more tolerant of one another. My friend did not deserve to die this way.” For information, visit www. ppines.com.
Broward Center Teen Ambassador Program Is Seeing Applicants By Debby Teich
T
he Broward Center for the Performing Arts is seeking high school students with an interest in the performing arts and an aptitude for writing for its Teen Ambassadors program. Pembroke Pines resident Nicky Macias, 17, who is passionate about music, theatre, musical theatre, and technical theatre, participated in the program last year and plans to apply again. Applications must be received by August 26. “The Teen Ambassador Program at the Broward Center has by far been the most thrilling and exciting thing I’ve been a part of ever,” said Nicky. “It has showed me that there is so much that goes into running a venue, and that my career options are endless. I have grown so much as a writer, performer, technician, and person.” Nicky has been performing since he was six years old. In fall 2017, he is hoping to attend University of Central Florida, where he plans to major in Psychology and minor in Performing Arts Management. He hopes to open his own theater company, work as a director at a theater company or work for a venue like the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. “I love the performing arts, because they are the roots to communities,” said Nicky. “They represent all the cultures of the world, through music, visual arts, dramatic arts, and dance. Some say the stage is the safest place on Earth. I know firsthand that there is no feeling quite like experiencing live entertainment or performing it.” Up to 24 students will be accepted into the upcoming program, which runs from September 2016 to May 2017. It includes guest speakers, master classes, back stage tours, meet and greets with professionals in various career tracks

They must also complete an application, which includes an essay about why they will be a valuable member of the program, as well as their experiences or feelings for or about live performing arts. The 2015/16 Teen Ambassador Program class consisted of 24 participants from 18 high schools and one homeschooled student. The students attended 57 different performances that included Broadway, Off Broadway, classical, jazz, opera and family entertainment. They also attended dance and improv workshops; met with cast members from Newsies and Spring Awakening; learned from guest speakers, including professional directors, producers and puppeteers and more. The Landscape Advisory Board selected one winner from each City Commission district, plus one overall winner. The winners were: ▸▸ District 1: Sheldon and Karen Scott ▸▸ District 2: Eddie Linares ▸▸ District 3: Gerald Nattboy ▸▸ District 4: Joseph Zappia ▸▸ District at Large: Mary Foster-Munn
▸▸ Honorable Mentions: George Koren, Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary East Campus, Arnita Aiken The award was created in memory of Natalie Belmonte, a well-known resident and businesswoman, who was also known for her love of nature, particularly butterflies. Well, besides the training I received at Paul Mitchell and the technical part the fact that every single guest gets their own privacy with no fast pace, loud noise of a regular salon. Most importantly my full attention in every appointment and every service done at One on One by Liz. Also it is not about what I think the guest should get but it is more about what they want for that appointment and that is where communication plays an important part. I am trying to build a relationship with every single guest that sits in my chair which for myself as a stylist is one of the most important things to have.

Pembroke Pines Elementary Students Visit Publix
School News
By Debby Teich
W
hen students in two Pembroke Pines Elementary School classes walk down the aisles at Publix, they now have a better understanding of what it takes to get the food on the shelves. They recently took a field trip to Publix, as part of KAPOW (Kids and the Power of Work). “KAPOW gives students real life experiences through a variety of activities,” said teacher Jessny Burch, whose second grade class has been participating in the program. KAPOW is a national network of business and elementary school partnerships which introduce students to career awareness through seven one-hour professionally designed lessons taught by business volunteers in the classroom. The lessons help students discover different jobs, what it takes to do them, and how to be successful in work and life. Throughout the school year, Publix store manager James Gooze, along with customer staff members Kelly O’Donnell and Carey Tavio, met with students
in Burch’s classes to teach them about the importance of community involvement, leadership, communication and teamwork. They used hands-on fun activities to involve the children and keep them interested. For the last lesson, the students took a field trip to the Cooper City Commons Publix to see where they work. Jennifer Alexander’s 4th grade class joined them. After Gooze explained that he started as a bagger and worked his way up to store manager, the students learned about 12 different jobs in the store. The department managers explained what they do and the kids had an opportunity to try many of the jobs.
The students used tools to decorate cookies; worked in the check-out line and counted money; learned about the store’s recycling program; visited the meat and produce departments; built store displays; stocked shelves and much more. “The kids had an awesome time on the field trip and learned a lot,” said Burch. “Some of them said they might even be interested in working for Publix one day.” KAPOW is always looking for businesses or individual volunteers interested in participating in the program. “Volunteers have the ability to change a young person’s life forever in only seven hours,” said John Casbarro, who coordinates KAPOW in South Florida. For information about volunteering, or your school or business becoming a KAPOW partner, visit www.kapowlfs. wordpress.com or send an email to john. casbarro@gmail.com.

Concussions: What You Need to Know The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1.3 – 3.8 million sports-related concussions occur every year Farah Tejpar, MD in the United Sports Health Specialist States. With more information coming out about the long-term effects of a concussion including chronic neurological disorders, it is important to know the signs and symptoms of this often hard-to-spot injury. Q: What is a concussion? A: A concussion is a traumatically induced transient brain injury. It can present with a variety of symptoms that typically resolve over days to weeks. An athlete can suffer a concussion in any sport. Athletes who suffer a concussion
are three to five times more likely to suffer a second concussion. Q: What are the signs of a concussion? • A dazed or stunned appearance • Confusion or clumsiness • Slow responses to questions • Personality or behavioral changes • Loss of consciousness – even temporary • Forgets plays or assignments • Forgetting the play prior to or after the hit Q: What are the symptoms of a concussion? • Headache • Nausea • Balance problems • Blurry vision • Sensitivity to light and noise • Changed sleep patterns • Trouble concentrating • Depression
Let us direct you to the best care. Access. Anytime. Anywhere.
Q: What is the recovery time after suffering a concussion? A: The recovery time is unique to each patient. It is important for the athlete to sit out until the concussion is fully healed and the symptoms have subsided. This typically takes one to two weeks, but can sometimes take a month or longer. Suffering a repeat concussion, while recovering from a previous concussion, is dangerous. It can lead to prolonged symptoms and in some cases long-term neurological consequences.

Reporting Work Accidents legally speaking
By Mayleidys Porraspita, Esquire
“I
’ve been injured at work. How will I pay my bills if I’m unable to work as a result of my work injury?” This is a question many workers struggle with when they are faced with an on-the-job accident or injury. The injured worker is often concerned that he will be labeled as a “complainer” by his co-workers and bosses or, even worse, he fears being fired for having an accident. Other injured workers are unsure if the accident is serious enough to report or even if it is considered a work accident. As the injured worker struggles with these questions, the clock is ticking and they run the risk of cheating themselves out of receiving the benefits they would otherwise by entitled to receive by failing to properly and timely report the
accident or injury. In Florida, most employers are required by law to carry Workers’ Compensation insurance. Workers’ Compensation is a no-fault system and does not require the injured worker, also referred to as the Claimant, to show fault on the employer or a third party in order to secure benefits. Additionally, the law prohibits employers from engaging in retaliatory discharge - firing an employee for reporting a work accident. The Claimant, however, does have one very important responsibility in ensuring that he has a valid claim to medical and lost wage benefits. The injured worker must report the accident or injury to the Employer within 30 days of the accident or the on-set of the injury. Failure to timely report could jeopardize the Claimant’s right to receive benefits under the Workers’ Compensation system. The reporting of the accident or injury must be done directly to their employer or supervisor and not just to a co-worker. The injured worker should ensure that the employer documents the accident or injury. The employer is then required to report the accident/injury to its insurance carrier, which must in turn provide medical care and lost wages to the worker. Due to the complexities of the system, injured workers are often misled at this stage. Although an attorney is not required in order to file a claim for Workers’ Compensation benefits, those without an attorney are often misinformed of their rights and face unnecessary delays in the medical care they need. The insurance company is in the business of saving money and will often delay and frustrate the Claimant in an effort to force them to simply abandon the claim. A knowledgeable Workers’ Compensation attorney can guide the injured worker through the system ensuring that he receives these benefits. Most importantly, the injured worker is not burdened with the cost of legal representation since the attorney representing the Claimant only gets paid when benefits are secured for the Claimant and these costs are usually the responsibility of the insurance carrier who has failed to timely and properly provide the benefits. If you or a loved one has been injured at work, feel free to contact our office. The Law Offices of Mayleidys Porraspita, P.A. are located in Pembroke Pines. If you have any questions regarding the matter discussed in the article above or any other Worker’s Compensation question or concern, call our office at 800-492-5455. Hablamos Espanol.

How to Make Debt Collectors Pay Big Money for Unwanted Telephone Calls (Part 2 of 3) By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. and Kevin Lewis, Esq. Foreclosure Defense, Bankruptcy Protection & Consumer Advocacy Attorneys
M
illions of consumers across the country are unaware of their rights when it comes to the bombardment of debt collection calls. Unfortunately, it happens every day - perhaps multiple times a day. The telephone rings and you pick up only to find yourself a victim to the unlawful tactics of relentless debt collectors pressuring you to pay. Most individuals believe this behavior is lawful and feel like they have no option other than to deal with such harassment, and eventually pay -- whether the debt is actually owed or not. Last month we discussed how consumers can use the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (“TCPA”) to recover huge damages against harassing telephone calls from debt collectors. This month, we will discuss a federal law that has far greater reaching application to benefit consumers. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (“FDCPA”) was enacted as a safeguard to punish debt collectors from overreaching their authority and to award those who are victimized by such acts with money in their pocket. In fact, many debts can be wiped away, along with deletion of negative credit information to resolve consumer claims under the FDCPA. Although the FDCPA was established as a shield against unlawful conduct, most debt collectors ignore these rules. They figure that the benefit of receiving payment from those who don’t know their rights outweighs the detriment from the few who actually stand up and fight back. The following are just a few of the common FDCPA violations debt collectors commit when making a call to an individual’s telephone seeking payment: ▸▸ Provide information about your debt to someone else other than yourself. ▸▸ Use threats or abusive language. ▸▸ A debt collector can only call between the hours of 8am and 9pm, based upon the time zone where the consumer is located. ▸▸ Pretend to be someone else. ▸▸ A debt collector is not allowed to contact an individual who is represented by an attorney regarding a specific debt. These are just a few of the many scenarios where hiring an attorney can help provide you with peace from harassing phone calls and may even result in an award of huge damages, and a reduction or elimination of debt. Claims raised under the FDCPA are another way in which The Arcia Law Firm can assist consumers to obtain a huge recovery against over-reaching debt collectors. Most importantly, when hiring the Arcia Law Firm to handle a FDCPA claim, consumers are responsible for zero costs— no money down, no expenses out of pocket. Whether you have been the victim of unwanted telephone calls or texts, or seek assistance with understanding your rights as a consumer faced with harassing debt collection phone calls and other tactics, our Firm will be able to assist you. The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to successfully represent dozens of consumers in our community against unethical and unscrupulous debt collectors. Contact the Arcia Law Firm at 954-437-9066 to schedule your free consultation with Omar Arcia to discuss your case in detail. P
rospective patients often ask, “Who should I go to for my cosmetic surgery procedure?” This question, if answered correctly, can make the difference between a beautiful result or a disastrous complication. All too often, South Florida patients will choose their cosmetic surgeon based on price. This is the biggest mistake most people make. The first question a prospective patient should be asking is, “Is my doctor board certified in Plastic Surgery?” Many doctors are board certified, but don’t always state which field of medicine they are certified in. You should trust your care for cosmetic surgery only to a physician who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is the only board recognized by the American Medical Association to certify physicians in over 24 medical specialties. The easiest way to check a doctor’s credentials is to go to www.abms.org to determine which medical specialty they are board certified in. The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery is not a recognized board by the ABMS. Equally important is that your surgeon is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. These societies require not only board certification, but also documented experience in cosmetic plastic surgery. Patients should also know how much experience a surgeon has in the procedure you are requesting. If you are interested in a breast augmentation, ask your doctor how many he or she does a week, a year. Does the surgeon have hospital privileges to do the same procedure? Many physicians who perform liposuction in office facilities don’t have hospital privileges to do these procedures. Hospitals will only grant operative privileges to physicians with well-documented training in that procedure. The procedure should be performed in an accredited facility like our office, which is certified by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilites, Inc. or a licensed accredited hospital or outpatient surgery center. A common misconception is that office surgery is not as safe as hospital surgery. This is not true. The safety of a procedure is dependent on the credentials of the surgeon, accreditation of the facility, and the presence of a board certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist. Many surgeons will tell prospective patients that they only perform surgery in a hospital setting because it is safer. These surgeons usually don’t have an office that is properly equipped or certified for outpatient surgery. I, like many other experienced board certified plastic surgeons, offer patients a choice to have surgery in our certified private office facility or the hospital, depending on the overall medical conditions and the procedure being performed. Finally, assuming the physician has all the appropriate credentials and level of expertise, I stress the patient choose a surgeon with whom you feel most comfortable, who has a kind, attentive staff, in an environment where you can get the best care. Ask for patient referrals and patient testimonials. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care. Do you have a thoughtful and comprehensive estate plan which includes:
Planning for the Unexpected
I
t’s Tuesday morning. Your husband just left for a business trip to Venezuela. In the family room, 2-year old Sophia is amusing herself while waiting for Jennifer, the 16-year old new neighbor who has been babysitting a few mornings this summer. It’s your special time to run errands or get in some exercise. Today is the perfect day to try out a new pair of rollerblades. Lace up. Ear buds in. Sunscreen on. You tell Jennifer you’ll be back in about 90 minutes and off you go to the local park. It’s unusually quiet this morning. While skating along at a fast pace, you hit a rock , lose your balance and fly wildly out of control into a swale of high grass, where you hit your head hard and everything goes dark……….. Luckily a jogger finds you and calls 911. You are transported to a hospital but are unconscious. With no identification found on you, the hospital doesn’t know who you are or whom to call. Hours later, Jennifer becomes concerned when you don’t return home as expected. She calls your cell phone, but there’s no answer. She also tries your husband’s number which goes directly to voice mail. Afternoon arrives and Jennifer begins to really worry. She has plans of her own, and you were supposed to be home hours ago. What should she do? She calls her own mother who says, “Call the police.” Two uniformed officers arrive and ask questions. They check police reports and hospitals. There is an unidentified woman at a local hospital who may be the missing mom, but she is unconscious. The police evaluate the situation and determine that there is no family member present to take care of Sophia. What happens next is a parent’s nightmare. Your daughter is now in the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families. Is our story farfetched? Probably. But while this type of scenario is not likely to happen to your family, it reminds us to make sure we plan for the unexpected. At a minimum, every family should have standard written babysitter instructions which include contact information for family members and friends who should be contacted, if parents cannot be reached. In addition, an attorney can help to prepare a Power of Attorney for Childcare which can include authorization for the care, custody, medical care, and even travel for your minor children. It is certainly not necessary to consult an attorney to put together babysitter instructions. This is something that parents can create on their own. However, other legal documents are best prepared by an experienced estate planning attorney who can offer counsel and ensure that documents are properly prepared and executed. You want to make sure your legal documents work when you need them. Remember that having a family plan for the unexpected may help to keep small incidents from becoming big problems. Estate planning is a deliberate, premeditated act of love. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M. in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the area of estate planning and probate and trust administration for over 30 years. Legally Speaking
By Evan Baron
I
, like many people have been caught up in the presidential election. This will not be a political statement, but rather a comparison of behavior. As I watched the debates and the many speeches of all the candidates, it became apparent that in many instances the issues became secondary and personal attacks moved to the forefront. It was not about moving forward, but rather throwing stones and berating the other individuals. It became petty and in many instances demonstrated a lack of maturity and civility. So, as I watched the candidates battle day after day, I began to realize that in many ways this behavior was quite similar to the atmosphere we sometimes see in a divorce. Often times the parties involved in a divorce lose focus on the issues as well. It is not about moving forward, but rather more about making the other party look bad. We hear about all the wrongs that were done and how the spouse should not be rewarded for his/her behavior. It becomes more about emotion and much less about logic and common sense. Behavior also often lacks civility and maturity. I will say that this is not the “norm,” but rather a minority of the cases.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.
I know many people have been “put off” by the behavior of some of the candidates. In some instances, the electorate has stopped listening. The behavior has almost becomes embarrassing to some voters. Judges can also have a similar reaction to such behavior. Since Florida is in fact a “No Fault State,” the behavior of a party is almost never an issue. It doesn’t matter why the parties are getting divorced, as long as one of the participants believes that the marriage is in fact “Irretrievably Broken.” Of course, a parent’s behavior can sometimes be an issue if it is believed that it might have a negative impact on minor children. The most difficult divorces to finalize are generally the one’s which are controlled by emotions and not by reason. I certainly understand the emotional impact of divorce, both on the participants and the children. It is difficult to put emotion aside and consider it from a distance. That is probably the most compelling reason to hire an attorney. An attorney can guide the client in the right direction and hopefully not get involved in the emotion of it all. It is important to look forward in one’s life and not just stare in the “rearview” mirror. I think the consensus is that the name calling and sometimes immature behavior of the candidates have turned much of America off. It is not the way adults are expected to act. Keep that in mind if you are involved in a divorce. I think we can agree that it doesn’t really accomplish anything. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

Getting Your Child’s Eyes Ready for the Classroom By Michael Chesen, OD

eye care
any doctors believe that around 80% of learning occurs through a child’s eyes. Since a child’s eyesight may change frequently, consistent eye and vision care is crucial to a student’s classroom success. Surprisingly, most parents are not including eye exams as part of their child’s back-to-school doctor’s visit line-up. Furthermore, survey results show that over 50% of parents don’t take their child for an eye exam until at least age three. The AOA actually suggests that children receive their first eye screening at six months, then comprehensive vision examinations starting at age three, before beginning school. Exams should continue to be booked routinely every other year from that point on. Often the issues a child deals with in the classroom can come from sight difficulties. The number of students who are suffering from undiagnosed vision problems is quite high. Over 60% of students classified as students with learning-disabilities actually have undiagnosed vision problems. Your child will be much better off if you take a proactive role in ensuring your child is seeing properly. Don’t push off your child’s first vision screening until kindergarten. Pediatricians should perform a dilated eye exam to discover any serious eye problems within the age of two months. Every child should have a complete eye checkup by age five, since early intervention can make a difference. Additionally as a parent, it’s important to see whether your child is reading sufficiently. Generally, kindergarteners are excited to look at books and try and figure out words. Children that don’t read books may be experiencing a vision problem. Before you assume the worst, it’s a good idea to get a vision examination. For a pediatric eye exam at Mirvision, call us to book an appointment. Remember that the earlier a vision problem is identified and treated, the more likely treatment will be successful. And vision is an essential component for school work. If a child’s eyesight is flawed, increasing visual demands, such as finer print in textbooks or more homework, can considerably change a student’s success. At the same time, new technology in the classroom, such as using interactive SMARTboards, can also possibly exacerbate less obvious vision issues. Without proper eyesight, children may suffer not only at school, but also mentally, physically and emotionally. Before school starts this year, make sure your child’s vision is on par!

Heel and Arch Pain in Adults ask the expert
By Dr. Carlo A. Messina
H
eel Spur Syndrome and Plantar Fasciitis are common ailments in adults. Plantar Fasciitis is an inflammation of the main ligament in the arch where it attaches to the heel bone and supports the foot. Causes can include excessive activity over a short period of time. This condition can occur in flat or high arched feet. Tight muscles, especially the calf and hamstrings, cause increased tension in the fascia. Poor shoe gear as well as walking barefoot on hard floors for prolonged periods of time is often a contributing factor. Symptoms include pain first thing in the morning when getting out of bed and putting the foot down to the ground. With walking, the pain usually diminishes. Pain can also occur after sitting for a prolonged period of time or getting out of a car and starting to walk. Occasionally, burning, numbness, shooting or tingling into the heel happens with or without weightbearing. Extreme tenderness to touch the heel or arch region occurs, especially during or after activity. It is commonly associated with lower back pain, due to compensation and abnormal gait. Rarely swelling or discoloration to the heel occurs. Treatment starts with avoiding going barefooted as well as proper shoe gear to support the arch and heel. Anti-inflammatory medications to reduce the inflammation, both orally and Ultrasound-guided, may also be prescribed. Taping the foot to support it can give immediate relief. Custom molded orthotic (shoe insert) to permanently support the foot and prevent reinjury may also be recommended. Frequent stretching of the calf and hamstring muscles to improve overall flexibility is necessary. Night splints are utilized to splint the foot at night to stretch the muscle in the back of the leg. Occasionally, immobilization in a cast or a boot to completely rest the foot depending on level of pain and discomfort may be necessary. Physical therapy can be used to decrease pain and inflammation. If conservative measures fail, Shockwave therapy or Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are used. Surgery is a last resort to release a small portion of the ligament from the heel. Prognosis is excellent in over 99% of the cases if early and aggressive treatment is performed. No long-term problems are expected and surgery is rarely necessary for this condition. Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. His partners are Dr. Robert Sheinberg, Dr. Al DeSimone, Dr. Fernando Moya, Dr. Alexander Bertot, Dr. Mark Fishman, Dr. David Shenassa, Dr. Nathan Vela and Dr. Michael Cohen. ugust is already upon us. While the summer is starting to wind down, I hope everyone still gets a chance to take some time to relax a bit and enjoy all the amenities the City of Pembroke Pines has to offer during our summer months. I encourage all Pines residents to visit the Recreation & Cultural Arts web page at www.ppines.com, check our calendars, and visit our Facebook page at www.facebook/cityofpembrokepines for exciting events and programs that are planned for the coming months. As you know, August is one of our hottest months of the year. When I recently saw a story in the news of a man taking a rock and smashing a car window to get a dog out of a hot car, I was reminded that we must always be vigilant about pet safety. It still amazes me after all my years in “sunny” Florida that this is an ongoing problem. Despite warnings every year, pets die after their owners leave them in parked cars that overheat. Within just a few minutes, a car can get extremely hot and deadly. I urge everyone to please, never, ever leave your pet in a parked car, even for a moment. August also means that in a few weeks families will be making the transition from the lazy days of summer to the 2016-17 school year. It’s a time when parents often breathe a sigh of relief, and students and teachers anticipate new beginnings and new challenges. It’s also a time when motorists should slow down and proceed with caution in school zones, stop for buses and be alert for children walking in the street or biking to school. Parents can help by teaching their children safety rules, and supervising young children as they walk or bike to school or as they wait at the school bus stop.

Students should also practice the safety rules for waiting at the bus stop, getting on and off the bus, and riding the bus. If walking to school, they should learn and practice the safety rules for pedestrians; cross at cross walks; and obey all traffic signs, traffic lights and safety patrol instructions. Safety tips can be found on our website, through our social media and our City Connect newspaper. I’d also like to remind all of the talented artists in our community about our 12th Annual Juried Art Competition which is coming up. Applications are now being accepted through September 12 at 5pm. Artists 18 and older can obtain information about participating in this exciting competition by visiting www.ppines.com/studio18. The Art Competition will be judged by members of the Pembroke Pines Arts and Culture Advisory Board.
