Make Time for Family

T

his summer ’s

World Cup fever has subsided, vacation memories are slowly fading away, and the kids are settling back into their school routines. Our lives are slowly returning to “normal.” Before we become bogged down with after school activities, sports and music lessons, let us not forget that the fall season in Florida has plenty to offer for fun family time. Best of all, the sun is not quite so scorching hot, but the ocean waters are still warm and beautiful. So, turn the TVs and game consoles off for a bit and get out there and enjoy the surf, go shelling, visit the Florida Keys, take a tour through the Everglades, visit the oldest town in North America (Saint Augustine), catch some fish, or visit your favorite characters in the theme parks of Orlando and Tampa. Whatever you choose to do, do it with family and friends. Our hectic lives force us to spend time separated from our loved ones for most of the day at school or work, so make sure you take the opportunity to enjoy each other’s company whenever you can. Sincerely, Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Pembroke Pines Receives Grant for New Civic Center Cultural Arts Complex Project By Debby Teich

T

he City of P embroke Pines is moving forward with a new civic center and plaza, along with creating a multi-disciplinary arts demonstration project. The City recently received a $50,000 Our Town grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) that will help make the project possible. “The City of Pembroke Pines’ selection as an Our Town grant recipient is both an honor and an exciting opportunity,” said Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank Ortis. The NEA received 275 applications for Our Town grants this year. It awarded 66 grants, totaling $5.073 million and reaching 38 states. “The City of Pembroke Pines demonstrates the best in creative community development and whose work will have a valuable impact on its community,” said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. “Through Our Town funding, arts organizations continue to spark vitality that support neighborhoods and public spaces, enhancing a sense of place for residents and visitors alike.” The Pembroke Pines Civic Center will break ground in the fall and should be completed in 2016. The complex will incorporate: ▸▸ 180,000 square foot multi-purpose Civic Center housing city offices and a Performing Arts Great Hall that will accommodate 3,500 audience members and offer flexible seating and professional staging options. The complex also includes a Loft Theater that seats 800. ▸▸ 8,000 square foot stand-alone Arts Center opening to the Plaza. ▸▸ One-acre Central Plaza connecting the Civic Center to the planned City Center mixed-use walkable residential, retail, entertainment and office district, which is under contract to be purchased by developer Turnberry Associates. The CivicArts Creative Placemaking project was developed by the City of

Pembroke Pines in partnership with Florida Atlantic University School of Architecture and its Broward Community Design Collaborative/ MetroLAB. MetroLAB will develop design recommendations for the Civic Center’s public plaza and access from the surrounding neighborhoods and the planned City Center District. In addition, the project will develop a multi-disciplinary arts demonstration project to be presented when construction of the Civic Center is completed. “The CivicArts Project will foster relationships between the residents of Pembroke Pines, FAU School of Architecture’s MetroLAB Collaborative and the wide variety of excellent artists who live and work in South Florida, bringing these dynamic collaborations to Southwest Broward County’s newest cultural arts venue,” said Mayor Ortis. “I am grateful to the leadership of the City’s Recreation and Cultural Arts Department and FAU’s School of Architecture for the development of this exciting project.” For information, www.ppines.com.

Miramar Pembroke Pines Regional Chamber of Commerce Brings YEA! Program to the Area By Debby Teich

I

n an effort to help revive the spirit of entrepreneurship among area youth ,

the Miramar Pembroke Pines Regional Chamber of Commerce is bringing the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) to Broward County. The program encourages participants to make a job, not just take a job. Applications for the 2014-2015 academic year will be accepted through September 27. “This program will be such a positive influence on students in our local community, and will provide an innovative, challenging, and fulfilling experience for everyone involved,” said Robert Goltz, President/CEO of the Miramar Pembroke Pines Regional Chamber of Commerce. “This experience is something students will be able to apply to any field they choose to enter, and will provide them with the necessary skills to become future leaders of their industries.” YEA! was developed at the University of Rochester in 2004 with the support of a grant from the Kauffman Foundation. In Broward County, the fall program will run from October to May at Broward County Community College. It will include a maximum of 24 students in grades 6-12. Throughout the class, students will develop business ideas, write business plans, conduct market research, make pitches to real investors, obtain funding, register their companies with governmental agencies, and more. By the end of the class, they will actually launch their own business or social movement, which can be carried on after their graduation from the program.

Students will also have an opportunity to meet with local business mentors and entrepreneurs across a variety of industries and take behind-the-scenes trips to local companies. It is a chance for them to learn about why real businesses succeed or fail. Goltz says that several members of the Chamber will be working with students as advisers, teachers and mentors. “This is a great program with so much potential,’ said Goltz. “We have seen success from many of the other areas in their launch and completion of the program.” As of 2013, YEA! has graduated 1,394 students who have launched over 1,000 businesses and social movements. They started as students, and left the program as CEOs of their own companies. To apply for YEA!, students must fill out an application at www.yeausa.org, complete the essay and short answer questions, submit transcripts, submit a letter of recommendation, and participate in an interview. Acceptance in the program is based on all aspects of the application, as well as the personal interview. Prior experience with business is not required. The Chamber will be awarding scholarships based on need and merit. If you are interested in becoming involved with YEA! as a guest speaker, fieldtrip host, or volunteer, contact Robert Goltz at 954-432-9808, ext.104; send an email to robert@miramarpembrokepines.org or visit www.yeausa.org.

Pembroke Pines and Miramar Police Departments Partner to Purchase Equipment By Debby teich

W

hen the P embroke Pines Police department needs to gather intelligence , approach suspicious packages or devices, or avoid putting an officer in a potentially dangerous situation, they may decide to deploy their new iRobot instead of a human. The Pembroke Pines and Miramar Police departments recently partnered together to purchase the iRobot, which is one of the most valuable tools available for tactical teams. “As cities face financial challenges, police departments can continue to enhance their existing partnerships by sharing the expense and maintenance of new technologies, equipment and special purpose vehicles,” said Chief Dan Giustino, Pembroke Pines Police Police Department. The iRobot, which cost approximately $146,468, is one of the most successful field-tested robots in the world. It performs bomb disposal and other dangerous missions for first responders. There are about 3,800 iRobots fielded internationally in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as domestically for use by bomb squads, SWAT teams, and other departments. The robot will be configured to meet the needs of the SWAT team. It will have a three link arm that can see up to 7.5 feet, and a thermal/infrared camera with two way audio/video capabilities that will allow face to face negotiations with armed subjects without jeopardizing safety. This is the second time in recent years that both departments have worked together in a cost sharing effort to obtain state of the art equipment that is beneficial to each city. In 2010, Miramar and Pembroke Pines jointly purchased a Bearcat Armored Rescue Vehicle for a total cost of approximately $282,000. They used the 2009 Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) grant funds available to each city to help pay for it.t These specially designed, ballistic engineered, armored response vehicles

have become the standard for rapid delivery of personnel and weapons during critical events. They can be used during SWAT situations, such as those involving hazardous materials, acts of terrorism or threats with high-powered weapons at schools or in public areas. “The Bearcat armored vehicle and the iRobot are two important tactical assets for police departments to have in responding to high risk calls such as an armed barricaded subject,” said Giustino. “Both assets will enhance the safety of police officers and citizens of both communities.” For information, visit www.ppines.com.

is co-sponsored by Pembroke Pines Charter High School and West Broward High School, will be held on September 27, from 1pm-3pm, at the Broward County Southwest Regional Library in Pembroke Pines. Over 700 students are expected to attend the Expo, which is like “speed dating” for volunteer work. Within two hours, students can sample between 25-40 different organizations, both large and small. They will have an opportunity to talk to the people who manage the organization’s volunteer programs, as well as other teens who have volunteered for the organization. “On one day, in one place, students will be able to match their interests with an organization,” said Susan Hill, Youth Services Supervisor. Some of the organizations that are scheduled to participate include: American Red Cross, Broward Teen Court, Go Green Charity Recycling, Joshua’s Heart, City of Pembroke Pines, Civil Air Patrol, Habitat for Humanity, Women in Distress’ DogWalk, Museum of Science and Discovery, Make-A-Wish Foundation, International Game Fish Association, Broward County Parks, the FRIENDS Horse Ranch, Southwest Regional Library’s Storybook Festival, and more. The event will also include a food drive, which will benefit local food pantries. “We want our teens to know how one person can make a difference,” said Lynn Morrison, Teen Services Supervisor. “We hope that they will find some matches that not only pique their interest, but perhaps become a passion. Just like their eventual careers, the greatest sense of satisfaction may result from something beyond the paycheck of service hours.” any teens are looking for volunteer opportunities as a way to earn

service hours for school or simply to give back to the community. Since 2006, the Teen Volunteer Expo has offered them an opportunity to connect with a wide variety of local organizations that need their help. The event, which

Susan B. Katz Theater of Performing Arts Has a New Mural By Debby Teich

Arts with a mural. As the artist in residence for Studio 18 in the Pines, Laflamme receives free studio space for one year. In return, she is required to create a public art project that serves the community. “I was asked to design a mural that satisfies the theme of comedy and tragedy,” said Laflamme. “In keeping with the artwork that was already inside the theater, I presented a sketch of the traditional comedy and tragedy masks that are typically associated with drama.” After the City set up scaffolding, Laflamme began drawing the image with chalk. Next she applied exterior latex paint to complete the mural. Due to inclement weather, it took her five days to finish the project.

Jacklyn Laflamme painted a mural on the exterior of the Susan B. Katz Theater of Performing Arts.

“It is always challenging to paint something that is such a large scale,” said Laflamme. This was the ninth mural that Laflamme has painted, including two others in Pembroke Pines. She completed two temporary holiday murals on the windows of City Hall. This one will be permanent. “The nice thing about painting a public mural is that so many people get to enjoy the art,” said Laflamme. “I hope to color the world one mural at a time.” For information, visit www.jacklynlaflamme.com.

Seniors to Test Their Spanish Spelling Abilities By Debby Teich

I

n recognition of National H ispanic H eritage month , seniors will once again compete for the title of “Spelling Bee Champion.” The 3nd Annual Senior Spanish Spelling Bee will be held on September 16, at 12:30pm, at the City of Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Community Center. The deadline to sign up is September 12. “The Spelling Bee helps to keep their minds young,” said Suzy Felix, Activities Coordinator. “It doesn’t matter their age. They always enjoy a little competition with their friends.” Pembroke Pines Director of Community Services and Housing Jay Shechter, who loves to play Scrabble, came up with the idea for a Spelling Bee. After holding the first two in English, the Spanish-speaking seniors wanted a turn. Schecter agreed to hold the next contest in Spanish. The Center now offers two Spelling Bees each year – one in English and one in Spanish. Last year, 17 seniors, ranging in age from 60 to 84, competed in the contest. They had to spell a wide range of words using the pronunciation from the Spanish alphabet, including any special punctuation. The contest started with easy words, such as “blusa” and “hablar.” As the contest progressed, there were harder words, such as “tridimensional” and “sinverguenza.” Once they misspelled a word, they were eliminated. After nearly 1½ hours of intense competition, the winners of the second Senior Spanish Spelling Bee were declared. They were: Isidoro Ghelman, 1st Place ($50); Marta Ghelman, 2nd Place ($30); and Teresa Eyrich, 3rd Place ($20). This year’s Spelling Bee will follow the same rules and offer the same cash prizes as last year.

To sign up, visit the activities desk at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center prior to September 12. The SWFP Community Center is located at 301 NW 103rd Avenue in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954-450-6888 or visit www.ppines.com, click on Departments and select Community Services.

Elementary Students Get their Smoke Alarms Working By Debby Teich

T

his month , elementary school students throughout

Pembroke Pines will be learning about the importance of working smoke alarms. They will be competing in the Pembroke Pines Fire Department’s 18th Annual Fire Prevention Week Poster Contest, which promotes Fire Prevention Week’s theme “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month.” The deadline to submit posters is September 22. According to the latest National Fire Protection Association research, working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire in half. Meanwhile, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. “In a fire, seconds count,” said Fire Marshal Sandra Lluis. “Roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11pm and 7am, when most people are asleep. Home smoke alarms can alert people to a fire before it spreads, giving everyone enough time to get out.” The Pembroke Pines Fire Department recommends the following smoke alarm tips to prevent fires: ▸▸ Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home. ▸▸ Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. This way, when one sounds, they all do. ▸▸ Test alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button. ▸▸ Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10

years old or sooner if they don’t respond properly. ▸▸ Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it. According to the rules, the poster must contain the Fire Prevention Week theme. Each child must make their own poster, which will be judged on originality. Posters can be made on any suitable material and should be appropriate for vertical display. Trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. The winning posters will be displayed at Pembroke Pines City Hall during Fire Prevention Week, from October 6-9. During the seven-day campaign in October, the Fire Department will offer a variety of programs aimed at educating the public on fire safety. In addition to the poster contest, there will be fire safety presentations, fire station tours, and a fire exposé. The Fire Department will also give away thousands of brochures, firefighter helmets, coloring books, and stickers. “We receive many requests during the month of October for presentations and station tours,” said Lluis. “We recommend that groups call as soon as possible to schedule activities.” For information on the Fire Prevention Week poster contest in Pembroke Pines, call the Pembroke Pines Fire Prevention Bureau at 954-435-6531. To learn more about smoke alarms and “Working Smoke Alarms Saves Lives,” visit NFPA’s website at www.firepreventionweek.org.

New Loan Modification Program that is 85% Successful By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

I

Loss Mitigation M ediation Program (“LMM”) was launched in all South Florida Bankruptcy Courts. This new program started as a direct response to the frustration experienced by many homeowners who have tried to modify their home loans time and time again without success. The success rate for traditional loan modifications outside of bankruptcy is less than 15%. So far, about 85% of the eligible homeowners that have completed the LMM program have obtained permanent loan modifications with significantly better loan terms, lower interest rates, and even huge principal forgiveness. Here are some of the other benefits of the LMM Program that you need to consider: ▸▸ Under the LMM program, the foreclosure process stops immediately and any foreclosure sale date is automatically cancelled without further hearing. ▸▸ The entire program is court supervised, a mediator will be appointed to your case, and all negotiations must be concluded and a decision rendered within 150 days of the date a mediation Order is signed by the Court. ▸▸ Another frustrating feature for homeowners about conventional loan modification applications is that lenders continuously misplace documents. Under the LMM program there are no more “lost documents” by the bank, since all documents are uploaded to a single website to which all parties have immediate access. ▸▸ If the lender refuses to provide a timely response to a completed loan modification application, or even refuses to participate in the program, the homeowner now has the right to seek assistance from a federal judge to ensure that the lender complies with its obligations. This enforcement component is not available to homeowners trying to do a loan modification on their own. ▸▸ The program applies to both Chapter 7 and 13 if you are surrendering a property, but loan modifications are only available in a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. ▸▸ There is an increased likelihood that your Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Plan will be confirmed by the Trustee given that once the mortgage loan is modified under LMM, the homeowner’s future financial picture is more clearly defined. While these are exciting new benefits for any homeowner struggling with a loan modification of their mortgage, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy petition is NOT a do it yourself proposition. Many consumers that attempt to file their own, have their cases dismissed with prejudice for 180 days for failure to comply with the Bankruptcy Code. This means you cannot refile for bankruptcy during that time. Any homeowner even considering this alternative must seek sound legal advice from attorneys with Chapter 13 bankruptcy experience, like the knowledgeable attorneys and staff at the Arcia Law Firm. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. t has been about one year since the

If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or frustrated with a loan modification, call the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation with an attorney, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information.

By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

L

ipoabdominoplasty is an advanced technique that is

bringing significant change to the traditional tummy tuck. The procedure involves a combination of traditional liposuction with an open skin and fat removal procedure, typically referred to as a tummy tuck. The combination of the two procedures enables the plastic surgeon to contour and shape the abdomen and the adjacent areas more completely. Patients who have experienced increased skin laxity and excess fat deposition in the abdomen, hips, and waist can now transform their bodies into a more beautiful shape. This procedure is ideal for patients who have excess skin and fat with abdominal weakness, commonly seen after childbirth, weight loss, and with the alterations that are seen with the aging process. Lipoabdominoplasty safely combines suction-assisted lipectomy (liposuction) with abdominal muscle tightening and skin removal. The fat which is removed via lipoaspiration can be added to other areas of contour deficiency like the buttocks through fat grafting or transfer. This combination reshapes the entire midsection and buttock giving the individual the shapely body contour they desire. The technique should be used with caution in patients who have a history of smoking or previous abdominal surgery, and should be performed only by experienced surgeons who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Advanced Abdominal Contouring

September 2014 | Our City Pembroke PInes

There are a number of important variables that determine whether a patient is a candidate for a lipoabdominoplasty. For any plastic surgical procedure to be a complete success, medical and psychological fitness for surgery is a prerequisite. The appropriate patient typically is close to their ideal body weight with anatomic features that may be improved surgically, including loose skin, excess fat, and weakened abdominal muscles. The distribution of fat is one determinant of the improvement a patient will have from a tummy tuck. Fat in the superficial tissue is the type that is possible to pinch. This superficial fat may be removed through excision (tummy tuck) or aspiration (liposuction). If skin laxity or looseness is significant, the skin and fat should be removed with a tummy tuck. If the skin elasticity is adequate; however, the superficial fat may be removed through liposuction alone. Liposuction may flatten the abdomen, but it will not tighten the skin significantly. Patients who have soft, distended abdomens frequently have lax muscles or a separation of rectus muscle in the midline known as diastasis. This is common after multiple pregnancies making it a great procedure for ‘Mommy Makeovers’ or significant weight loss patients. When patients have excess skin that extends to the lateral hips and lower back or buttocks, an extended or circumferential abdominoplasty may be necessary. For most patients, the resultant incision is well hidden within underwear and bathing suit lines. The procedure usually takes 2 – 3 hours. Patients should prepare to rest for a minimum of one to two weeks after their procedure. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care. rthroscopic surgery is the way most S ports M edicine doctors in the world are able to get inside the joint (like the knee) to fix, repair, clean up and do a debridement of the joint. Patients need arthroscopic surgery because they injured their joint and have injured their cartilage, have loose bodies, or have diseases that do not respond or get better with the classical nonsurgical approach. This is also the most common way we operate patients with ACL ligament tears, meniscus tears, rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability and intra-articular loose bodies. I must emphasize that a surgical procedure in sports medicine is only needed when the patient has severe problems with the shoulder and knee joint. Most of the time, patients immediately after an injury need to be treated with medication by mouth like anti-inflammatory medication, icing of the injured part, elevation of the extremity and immediate rest. If the pain and disability does not go away the patient needs to visit an emergency room or an orthopedic surgeon. Usually x-rays are taken to make sure there is no bone problem like a fracture and a complete physical exam done. Further testing with an MRI scan may be needed in some cases. The purpose of the arthroscopic surgery is to make a patient painless and functional. This new technology has revolutionized medicine and continues to evolve to the point that today I am able to do the arthroscopic surgery doing ONE single small incision. Most surgeons who do arthroscopic surgery need to do two or three small incision poke holes, to do the surgery in that joint. Those extra two or three holes are still needed for other complex surgeries. This new technique uses ONLY ONE small incision and was created as a less intrusive method to operate joints especially the knee joint. Through that one incision I am able to do many of the arthroscopic surgeries commonly done in the knee and I DO NOT need to do two or three small incisions. The most common surgeries that I can do with a single incision portal are surgery for meniscus tear, loose bodies inside the joint, diagnostic arthroscopy, debridement of infection inside the knee joint and synovectomies. Again, more complex surgeries will still require the orthopedic surgeon to use two or three extra holes to do the surgery. The advantages of this single portal arthroscopic surgery has to do with reducing the number of incisions from three or two to just one single incision causing most patients to report less pain, better immediate movement, less swelling of the joint and faster recovery or rehabilitation. This will then allow the patient to start the standard rehabilitation protocol faster to resume activities of daily living like walking, standing and eventually recovering full sport capacity without pain, swelling or locking episodes. In conclusion, single portal knee arthroscopy is a new technique that continues to provide new more effective ways to help the patients go back into an active lifestyle and a the sport they want to play.

f your home is listed for sale and not selling in today ’s

real estate market, there is reason for concern. A home doesn’t sell due to an array of circumstances, several of which you can manage successfully. Some of your challenges that can lead to this are: ▸▸ Price it correctly from the beginning. If you failed to price it appropriately when you initially listed the property, more than likely your home will have showings, but fail to attract any offers. The “why” for this is pretty simple…would you buy an overpriced home if you were the buyer? Even if the price is lowered after the home is listed for a period of time, you will have lost the momentum of the initial listing period and the majority of buyers will assume that there is something wrong with the home. Pricing your home at fair market value from the onset is the best decision you can make! ▸▸ Condition of the home is a key ingredient. Sellers should look at the home from a potential buyer’s perspective. Buyers have high expectations, therefore the home needs to be consistently clean, neat, de-cluttered and depersonalized so that the buyers are able to visualize themselves living there. Your home curb appeal is of the utmost importance; therefore, a trim, yet cozy, appearance and careful landscaping will give the buyer a warm sense of wanting to enter the home to begin with.

With Allstate life insurance,

love wins.

▸▸ Marketing matters! Oh does it matter! The power of being able to sell is simply the Multiple Listing Service and the hundreds of websites that your home is syndicated to from this. Ninety-seven percent of buyers first go online to look at properties to begin their search. Therefore, it’s important that your home has multiple professional looking photos that will make it look as alluring as possible. A home listed without photos or very few photos is unlikely to draw considerable interest. ▸▸ Hire the right Realtor for the job of selling your home. Selling your home is one of the biggest financial decisions you will ever make. Hire a Realtor who is knowledgeable about the area. Your success is dependent on this. A full-time, seasoned Realtor with experience that has seen the ups and downs of the market brings the necessary knowledge and expertise to the potential sale. Experienced seasoned agents also tend to know and have relationships with other Realtors, which results in smoother transactions.

We can help you protect your growing family at an affordable price. Do you have enough life insurance? It’s one of the best ways to provide for your family if something happens to you. With the right coverage, love wins. Call us today for affordable options.

Ask the Mayor

Pembroke Pines Update By Mayor Frank C. Ortis

I

’d like to begin with a pet peeve I have about drivers who don’t use their blinkers when turning. The next time you are driving, just count how many times your fellow drivers fail to use their turn signals. Chances are you will run out of fingers and toes before the engine is warm. Please remember that all drivers have an ongoing duty to use signals, just as they have a duty to stop at a stop sign or at a red light. I would like to ask the residents of Pembroke Pines to make a serious effort to use your turn signals whenever you are switching lanes or turning (and switch it off when you’re done!) and help make the roads a safer place. On a happier note, I am excited to announce that our City was awarded one of 66 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) “Our Town” grants. This is both an honor and an exciting opportunity. The $50,000 grant will support the design of our proposed Civic Center’s performing arts facilities and plaza, along with creating a multi-disciplinary arts demonstration project. It also distinguishes us as one of the most creative cities in the country. A reminder to everyone that the City of Pembroke Pines will hold a Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony on September 11, at 8:30am, at the Pembroke Pines City Center Memorial, 10300 Pines Boulevard, west of Pembroke Pines City Hall. The ceremony begins with the presentation of colors by the City of Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Department Honor Guards and will include guest speakers, patriotic music featuring local school bands and area musicians. This event is free and open to the public. Please come to the ceremony to remember all those who lost their lives on this tragic day. And while you are marking your calendars, be sure to circle October 10, when Pembroke Pines will be getting our very own Trader Joe’s. Doors will open at 8am to the new 12,500 square foot market, which will be located at 11960 Pines Boulevard in the Pembroke Crossing shopping plaza. We’re proud of the fact that this will be the first location for the popular California-based grocer in Broward County. This highly sought after retailer is just one of many establishments to choose the City of Pembroke Pines first when looking for locations in Broward County. Retail and office space are in high demand in our City and new construction is on the horizon. New buildings will help the City to recruit new corporations to the area, create new jobs, support our tax base and help to diversify our robust economy. These are exciting times in the Pines! For information, call 954-435-6505 or send an email to fortis@ppines.com.

nce again , the summer has quickly passed us by and it ’s

time for the school year to begin again. It is an exciting and often stressful time as children begin a new year with new classes, new teachers and sometimes new schools. For children of divorced parents, there can be some additional stress. Of course, parents who place the children first can make it much less stressful. These days, we are seeing more equal time sharing between mom and dad. This also means equal responsibilities for each parent as well. In an intact marriage, parents usually assume certain roles and assist each other. In a one parent household, there are no longer defined roles. Mom and Dad must each make sure that they get the children up on time, ready on time, perhaps pack lunches, and most importantly complete homework assignments.

Back to School

September 2014 | Our City Pembroke PInes

Communication between parents is the key to a successful school year. Each parent must realize that they are on the same team and they should not be looking for a “gotcha” moment. Each should be ready to assist each other, rather than trying to find fault to be used in a court proceeding. Joint parenting is not a contest; Mom vs. Dad. It is an attempt to have both parents do what’s best for the child as opposed to try and prove who may be the better parent. The most common equal time sharing schedule is two nights with one parent (Monday and Tuesday) and two nights with the other parent (Wednesday and Thursday), with weekends (Friday to Monday) being rotated from week to week. A set schedule such as this gives a child some stability and doesn’t cause him/her to wonder where he/she will be sleeping from day to day. Of course, communication between parents is still necessary. Class projects, homework and school events must be known to each parent. Parents should not rely on their children to deliver this information. Often, teachers will be accommodating and provide duplicate information, so each parent is aware of assignments and future school events. Shared Parental Responsibility requires shared information. Sometimes I encounter parents who are so angry with each other that their focus is on the other parent’s possible shortcomings rather than working together to assist the children. Unfortunately, emotions sometime interfere with common sense. It is difficult to successfully maintain an equal time sharing schedule if the parties do not reside in close proximity to one another. Getting a child to school on time can be a problem if one of the parents resides far from the school. It is not in a child’s best interests to have to wake up extremely early to accommodate a parent who chooses to reside a distance from his/her school. If a parent truly wants to have equal time, the child’s needs must come first. A child who has both parents in his/her life will derive a benefit, but only if the focus of each parent is the child and his/her needs. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

Cryotherapy for Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers for men in the country. Each year, more than 200,000 men will be diagnosed with the disease. There are many innovative treatments available, such as cryotherapy, which provides hope for patients who have either exhausted other options or would like to avoid surgery. Cryotherapy has been available since the early 1990s; however, significant improvements have been made in both the way it’s delivered and in how well it’s tolerated by patients. Advances

Nicolas Muruve, MD Cleveland Clinic Florida Urologist

in technology have allowed for a safe and effective technique that can now be performed on an outpatient basis. Extremely cold temperatures are used in cryotherapy, in order to freeze and destroy cancer tissue. Originally used in treating warts and skin lesions, it has more recently been used in treating various kinds of cancer. With cryotherapy, an ultra-thin metal probe or needle is utilized, as well as ultrasound imaging as a guide during the process. A freezing liquid, such as liquid nitrogen or more commonly, argon gas, is infused through the probe into the prostate gland. The intense cold freezes the prostate and destroys any cancerous tissue it contains. Using the images from the ultrasound to identify the cancer tissue, the surgeon can limit damage to normal prostate tissue. Any living tissue, healthy or unhealthy, cannot withstand the extreme cold. Though typically not used as a first-line therapy for prostate cancer treatment, cryotherapy is an effective second- or thirdline therapy for patients with recurrent prostate cancer or those who either have not responded to or are not candidates for radiation therapy or surgery. Generally, this includes patients who have had extensive abdominal surgery, as well as patients who have undergone previous radiation therapy. Cryotherapy offers advantages over other methods of cancer treatment. It is less invasive than surgery, involving only a small incision or insertion of the cryoprobe through the skin. Consequently, pain, bleeding, and other complications of surgery are minimized. Cryotherapy allows for a shorter hospital stay and recovery time. For appropriate candidates, cryotherapy offers similar success rates to those of other therapies, including radiofrequency ablation, with a low incidence of side effects. It is generally well-tolerated, and cryotherapy procedures for prostate cancer treatment last only about 30 minutes.

He loves walks, going for runs, and playing Frisbee. He does not like thunder, but patiently waits for the storm to pass so he can play again. He was last seen running with his dad in the mornings in West Pembroke Pines, or fetching his frisbee with his mom and dad at a Pembroke Pines park.
