Treat Your Loved Ones to Magical Memories this Halloween
O
ctober is one of my favorite months of the
year. Florida’s fabulous fall weather is starting, with nighttime temperatures cooling off and the humidity dropping a bit. We can finally get back to enjoying outdoor activities with our families and friends. At the end of the month is Halloween – a favorite holiday of children and kids at heart. What better way to spend some family time than searching for the perfect pumpkin in one of the area’s many pumpkin patches, then rolling up your sleeves to carve a jack-o-lantern? It’s the quintessential Halloween decoration. Soon our streets will be filled with pint-sized princesses and witches, villains and superheroes. Let’s all have some fun while watching our little ones (and big ones too!) roam the neighborhood dressed up as their favorite characters. Don’t forget to take lots of pictures, as these are the memories that will last a lifetime. Have a happy and safe Halloween everyone! Sincerely, Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Pediatric Dentistry of Weston Helps Children Achieve Healthy and Beautiful Smiles by debby teich
P
Do you offer sedation dentistry? For children that have dental anxiety, we offer different types of sedation techniques to help them have a more pleasant dental visit. These techniques include nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas), oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation, which is administered by a pediatric anesthesiologist. We employ the safest and most effective sedation standards by following the guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
ediatric D entistry of Weston offers comprehensive dental care for children, from infants to teens, and helps them develop beautiful, healthy smiles. Dr. Samira Alempour and her experienced staff work together to provide state-of-the-art treatment in a safe, fun, and kid-friendly environment. They understand that visiting the dentist can be difficult for children and make every effort to make them feel at ease. They encourage patients with positive reinforcement, praise, and prizes to help them maintain a positive outlook on oral health for the rest of their lives. Pediatric Dentistry of Weston is located at 2863 Executive Park Dr., Suite 101, in Weston.
Dr. Samira Alempour answered some commonly asked questions about her practice.
At what age should parents bring their children for the first time? One year of age is the ideal time to bring in your child for their first dental visit to establish a dental home, as is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Visits are complimentary for children under the age of two.
Dr. Alempour loves children as much as she loves dentistry. She teaches her patients how to take good care of their teeth, prevent cavities and promote good oral health.
What are the ages of your patients? Our patients include infants, children, and adolescents. We also have special training to comfortably treat patients with specific and special healthcare needs. What services does your practice offer? Our practice offers comprehensive dental care and focuses on preventative treatment modalities and oral health education to prevent the formation of dental caries (cavities). We offer the latest state of the art technology, including digital (lowest radiation) x-rays and the highest quality dental materials. In addition to routine dental exams, we offer sealants to help prevent tooth decay by up to 90%, restorative treatment of cavities, extractions, and counseling for early intervention of harmful childhood habits, such as thumb sucking. What is Dr. Samira Alempour’s background? Dr. Samira Alempour moved to South Florida when she was 13 years old and has lived here ever since. She speaks English, Spanish, and Farsi. She is a published author and a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist. Dr. Alempour obtained her Dental Degree from Nova Southeastern University, where she continued on and earned her Degree in Pediatric Dentistry (specializing in the oral healthcare of infants, children, teens, and patients with special needs). She currently lives in Weston, with her husband, Robert, 15-month-old son, Riad, and their dog, Bailey the Boxer.
Why is it important to bring children for early dental visits? Early dental visits create the concept of a dental home, where young patients can learn to trust their pediatric dentist and staff. This helps to create familiar and comfortable dental visits. Also, early visits help detect cavities when they are small and more manageable and therefore much easier to treat. Another great benefit of early dental visits is to ensure that patients are brushing well and taking all the correct measures to prevent early childhood decay. At what age should children start brushing their teeth? The best time to start brushing is when the first primary tooth erupts to ensure good oral health for all of the years to come. We offer special infant toothbrushes with unique handles to our patients for creating safe and healthy brushing habits from an early age.

Is thumb sucking a problem? Thumb sucking and pacifiers provide comfort and a sense of security for many babies. Both are a common way to self sooth. If thumb sucking continues beyond two to three years of age, it may cause malpositioning of the teeth and future discrepancies in the child’s bite. Such habits should be discussed with your pediatric dentist. At what age do most children start losing their teeth? Most children begin to lose their first tooth around the age of six, but every child is different and sometimes it is sooner or later than six years of age.

Boy Scout Troop Conducts American Flag Retirement Ceremony By Debby Teich
F
or more than 200 years , the American flag has represented
our nation’s strength and unity. Boy Scout Troop 224, which meets in Pembroke Pines, recently conducted an American Flag Retirement Ceremony to honor and dispose of over 100 flags that were faded, worn, frayed or tattered. “The flag is an important symbol of our nation,” said Yolanda Santos, Boy Scout Chair and Public Relations Officer for American Legion Pembroke Pines Post 385, which supports Troop 224. “It is one that Americans have died defending, and it deserves an honorable retirement. The flags were accorded the same dignity at the end that they rightly received during their lifetime.” The troop collected flags from various businesses, Legion Posts, VFW posts, and the general public. They disposed of them according to a Federal law that stipulates many aspects of flag etiquette. After the flags were given a proper retirement ceremony, they were burned with dignity. The flags received a final salute before and after the
burning. Members of American Legion Pembroke Pines Post 385 and the Honor Guard participated in the ceremony. Troop 224 has been providing this service for the past 13 years. They still have over 100 additional flags to retire and will conduct another ceremony in the next few months. “This is a very important function the troop performs that should not be viewed lightly,” said Santos. Throughout the years, members of American Legion Pembroke Pines Post 385 have attended and supported Troop 224’s fundraisers, including the Pancake Breakfasts and Spaghetti Dinners. They also provide them with an annual donation, and support their Court of Honor by recognizing their Eagle Scouts with an American Legion Good Citizenship certificate from the post. To submit a flag for retirement, call Joe Motes at 954-559-3202 or Yolanda L Santos at 954-873-4920.

pen? The West Pembroke Pines Optimist Miracle League recently kicked off its fall season. Approximately 65 children with disabilities took to the field for a friendly game of baseball, while celebrating the start of the season with a special opening ceremony. The bleachers were filled parents, friends and relatives cheering throughout the game. Students from Flanagan High School’s baseball team served as the Angels in the outfield and assisted each player. Commissioner Iris Siple, Commissioner Angelo Castillo, Vice Mayor Jay Schwartz and the Boy Scouts attended, as well as Spiderman, Wolverine, Elmo and many others. Chef Adam from Memorial Hospital Miramar cooked for all of the guests. Jennifer Garvin, marketing team leader for Whole Foods, threw out the first pitch.

Prizes Awarded in Summer Desserts Master Chef Challenge By Debby Teich
A
t the Annual Master Chef “Summer Desserts” Baking Challenge, contestants shared some of their special summer recipes that bring raves from family and friends. All of the desserts had to be homemade and contain fresh summer berries. “The Annual Master Chef Summer Desserts Baking Challenge was not just ‘berry’ good, it was amazingly tasty,” said organizer Suzy Felix, Recreation Coordinator for the Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Community Center, where the event was held. Prizes were awarded for the top three “decadently delicious” and “visually stunning” desserts. All entries were judged based on appearance, texture and overall flavor. Juliet won first place ($50) for a fresh fruit tart; Camille Lewis Marker won second place ($30) for an Suzy Felix serves strawberry cheesecake to Dessert Challenge judge Catherine Lievano. old fashioned strawberry pie topped with freshly whipped cream; and Angela Calabrese won third place ($20) for a strawberry cheese cake. Pembroke Pines Remembers 9/11 By Debby Teich
A
pproximately 250 people attended the 13th Annual City of Pembroke Pines September 11th Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony at the City Center Memorial Pavilion. The audience was filled with survivors, families who lost loved ones, local fire fighters, and police task force units. Also in the audience were Pembroke Pine officials, such as Mayor Frank C. Ortis, Vice Mayor Jay Schwartz, Commissioners Carl Shechter, Angelo Castillo and Iris Siple, as well as Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief. Everyone gathered to honor and remember those whose lives were lost on September 11, 2001. “It is important we honor the fallen,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “We will not forget the evil and vile attack on our freedom.” As guests arrived, students from the Pembroke Pines FSU Charter Elementary School Chorus sang patriotic songs celebrating America. The Remembrance Ceremony included the Presentation of Colors by the City of Pembroke Pines Police and the Fire Department Honor Guards. Guest speakers touched upon the emotions of the day, the present state of world affairs and looked into the future as they spoke of the impor-

tance of freedom. Pastor Peter Tokar delivered a moving invocation and Cameron Wheeler sang the National Anthem. Fire and police sirens blared at 8:46am during the ten-second sound-off, followed by the lowering of the flags, a moment of silence and a Bag Pipe performance. “We come to remember,” said Commissioner Carl Shechter, a World War II Veteran. “To remember those innocent people who died, and the heroic people who risked their lives to save those they could.” On September 11, 2011, the tenth anniversary of the attack on Freedom, the City of Pembroke Pines unveiled its September 11th Memorial at the Pembroke Pines City Center Memorial Pavilion, 10300 Pines Boulevard in Pembroke Pines. The Memorial is open throughout the year for people to visit, mediate, pray, and remember. Residents can submit photos of Military loved ones, living or deceased, for permanent display on the “Salute OUR Soldiers” wall located on the first floor of Pembroke Pines City Hall. 3rd Annual “A Round for Recovery” Golf Tournament Returns By Debby Teich
O
n November 7, the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center (SBARC) Auxiliary will host the 3rd Annual “A Round for Recovery” Golf Tournament at the Pembroke Lakes Country Club in Pembroke Pines. Proceeds from the golf tournament will help support the electronic technological transformation of the center’s health records system – from covered wagon to Starship Susan B.
Auxiliary and board members, as well as SBA staff and volunteers, helped at the 2013 golf tournament. Photo (l to r): Sue Ellen Boatright, Dina Lavie, Dean A. Dalbery, Leesa Llompart, Amanda Levison, Jackie Press, Thelma Carter, Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Lisa Davenport, and Steve Press
“The golf tournament is a lot of fun and it is for a great cause,” said Leesa Llompart, who is co-chairing the event with Lisa Davenport. “It is a great way to let people know what our center has to offer women and children.” The individual player fee of $125, or $500 for a foursome, includes greens fees, cart, pre-tournament box lunch, dinner and prizes. For $50, non-golfers will be able to purchase tickets in advance for the dinner. On the day of the tournament, golfers will meet at 11am for registration and practice, which will be followed by a 1pm shotgun start. At 5pm, there will be a dinner, awards ceremony, silent auction, 50/50 raffle and Chinese auction. There will be prizes for the first, second and third place winner. There is also an opportunity to win a car for a hole-in-one. Since 1995, the award-winning SBARC has provided residential addiction treatment for pregnant women and mothers with children. It is the only center of its kind in South Florida and the intensive services provided have led to the reunification of more than 850 families, with more than 1,500 children who have been kept out of foster care while their mothers were in treatment. PPCES - East Campus Wins Yearbook Contest By Debby Teich
T
hroughout the year , teachers at City of Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School - East Campus take pictures of all of the special events that occur, so they can be included in the school’s yearbook for all to remember. The school’s yearbook recently won first place in the Elementary Division of the Yearbook Life contest for the 2013-2014 school year. It was one of over 200 entries submitted for the annual contest, which selects a winner Left: Yearbook cover Below: Teachers Erica Rzucidlo and Anarosa Grau created the award winning Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School – East Campus yearbook.
based on: Overall Originality, Yearbook Creativity, Yearbook Theme Consistency and Yearbook Image Quality. The national award winning yearbook was created by third grade teachers Erica Rzucidlo and Anarosa Grau. This was the second time that they worked together on the East Campus yearbook. In 2012-2013, the school’s yearbook was one of the top five finalists. Sean Chance, principal of the East Campus, was excited to win for 2013-2014. “We are thrilled to learn that our school, Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary East Campus, won first place in this national contest,” said Chance. “The rules and requirements were stringent and our yearbook team is looking to enhance their winning recipe for this year’s contest.” Grau revealed some of the strategies used to win in 2013-14. “Our Superhero theme catches the eye of all kids,” said Grau. “Whether they’re in K or 5th grade, they’re going to love the bright and colorful pages. We also incorporated students from K to 5th on the front and back cover, which gives it a personal touch. Most of the yearbook contains images that are not part of the program’s library, making it original.” Some of the special sections included Red Ribbon Week, which allowed students to dress up as their favorite superhero. For the Superlatives, 5th graders shared their pages with their favorite superheroes. There is also a page the showed the school’s principal, dressed as Superman, and assistant principal, dressed as Super Girl, performing their heroic daily duties at east Campus. The $250 prize will be used to enhance the East Campus audio visual program and enable the school to broadcast live morning news. For information, visit www.pinescharter.net 954-443-4800.
PPCHS Basketball Player Commits to Marquette University By Debby Teich

fter receiving 25 D ivision I college scholarship offers ,
Pembroke Pines Charter High School varsity basketball player Haanif “Hanni” Cheatham finally made a decision. On September 5, the 6’ 5” senior shooting guard committed to Marquette University. Cheatham’s mother was at his side, when he signed in the school’s gymnasium in front of a packed crowd, which included his family, coaches and Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank Ortis. The signing was streamed live by the High School Cube to over 4,000 viewers. “My week before the commitment day was hectic; phone blowing up, social media, text messages, etc.,” said Cheatham. “Waking up Friday morning, I felt relieved that this day had finally come. I worked very hard and spent years in the gym to achieve one of my goals that Friday. Now it’s time to focus on a strong

senior season with my team, get ready for the next level, and to follow what my mother has taught me: to be the best player and best person I can be.” Cheatham is a four-year varsity starter and played three of those years at Pines Charter. Last year, he averaged 26 points, ten rebounds, five assists, three steals per game and had four triple doubles. He made the Broward County All First Team, Junior Orange Bowl Basketball Classic All First Team, and was named the Florida Diary 6A Player of the Year for the 2013-2014 season. At Pines Charter, Cheatham has scored a total of 988 career points. During his senior season, he hopes to break 1,000 career points and to be chosen as McDonalds All American. “Haani is a student athlete who definitely has become a part of something larger than himself and Marquette University,” said Dave Roca, the PPCHS Head Men’s Basketball Coach. “Coach Wojo remarked to me that Hanni is my Johnny Dawkins. This signing has put Pines Charter on the map as a school which produces award winning student athletes.” Cheatham is currently ranked the #78 Best Player in the country by ESPN 100, the #68 Best Player in the country by RIVALS 150, and the #51 Best Player in the country by 24/7 Sports. He was the Alex Rodriguez Basketball Classic Most Valuable Player in 2014. He was invited to the top 3 basketball camps of the Nike Summer League in 2014: Kevin Durant Skills Academy, Lebron James Skills academy, and the Nike Global Challenge. “There are so many people to give thanks to,” said Hannif’s mother Ingrid Weiss. “Haanif is a community project. His current coaches, Dave Roca, Mike Opalka, Mike Bentivegna, Marques Holland, and trainer Stan Remi have been like family to Hanni. And the Nike Corporation for recognizing Haani and his work, especially Van and Vince Baldwin and finally Marty Caparros who has also been right by his side.” Cheatham plans to study business at Marquette. Habitual Toe Walkers By Robert H. Sheinberg, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.
A
t the beginning of independent walking , tod -
dlers may walk on their toes. Within three to six months the heel should be touching the ground during gait. Intermittent toe walking may be present in normal children until age six or seven. Tightness of the calf muscle is the primary cause to the child that toe walks. Underlying neurological disorders have to always be ruled out. Most children who present as persistent toe walkers are able to lower their heels to the ground when standing but not walking. Walking heel-toe is possible for a few steps but usually awkwardly due to tight calf muscles. Toe walkers are more common among boys and in many cases are a cause of concern. Treatment of habitual toe walkers may be necessary to avoid problems that can occur secondary to compensating for the abnormal posture. Compensation may occur by hyperextending the knee, rotating the entire leg towards the outside or having the foot turn down or out, causing a flat foot. It is important to assess the degree of muscle tightness in the hips, knees and legs. Spontaneous resolution may take place in some cases. If the gastroc soleus (calf muscles) are not severely tight, physical therapy or stretching at home may be of benefit. If unresponsive, serial casting may be necessary. Serial casting is a process in which the foot and leg are placed in a cast
with the foot held in a neutral position. The muscle is placed under stretch while the cast is on and walking is strongly encouraged to help the muscles stretch. Children who are sedentary who are placed in a cast do not get the same benefits as those that are active. Casts are applied every ten to fourteen days until the muscle is slightly overstretched. It may take as little as two to as many as eight weeks to improve the muscle flexibility. Following the casts, a night splint may be used for up to six months to maintain calf flexibility. In some cases the muscle is too tight to respond to serial casting. Surgical lengthening of the Achilles tendon through three little holes in the skin may be needed. It is an outpatient procedure. Casts are applied postoperatively for six to eight weeks. Once healing takes place, physical therapy is provided to maintain lower extremity strength and flexibility. An excellent long-term prognosis is the norm. Stature of Limitations Are Tricky in Foreclosure Cases By Omar J. Arcia Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Attorney
P
erhaps the hottest topic in foreclosure cases at the moment
is the proper application of a statute of limitations defense. The laws that set deadlines by when lawsuits must be filed are called statutes of limitations. Different deadlines exist for different types of lawsuits, and they vary by state. If properly asserted, a statute of limitations defense can prevent a creditor from obtaining a judgment against you even if you owe the money! In Florida, there is a five year statute of limitations to file a foreclosure case, and a one year statute of limitations for a deficiency judgment after foreclosure against a homeowner. The tricky question for Florida homeowners is when does the statute of limitations begin to run?
According to Florida law, the five year statute of limitations on a foreclosure action begins to run from the date of default (i.e., date of last payment). Generally, it runs continuously, unless the homeowner makes additional payments or files for bankruptcy. These scenarios temporarily suspend the running of the statute of limitations. However, if the mortgage holder sues for foreclosure more than five years after the alleged “default date,” a homeowner may be able to successfully dismiss that action. This issue is currently under consideration by the Florida Supreme Court, because lenders claim that each month a payment is not made is a new default date which “resets” the statute of limitations. If they have their way, mortgage holders and lenders could technically be immune from complying with Florida’s five year statute of limitations. A deficiency judgment is a claim against a borrower for the difference between the amount owed under the loan and the amount for which the property was sold at a foreclosure auction. In Florida, the statute of limitations for deficiency judgments resulting from foreclosures on or after July 1, 2013 is just one year. The time period begins to run the day after a certificate of title is issued by the court clerk. If the property was sold before July 1, 2013, then the statute of limitations is the earlier of five years or July 1, 2014. Any deficiency judgment action commenced after these time frames will be dismissed. Defending a foreclosure, deficiency judgment and filing for bankruptcy are NOT do-it-yourself propositions. The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm are privileged to successfully represent hundreds of homeowners in our community. We have foreclosure defense, loan modification and bankruptcy departments all within the same office. We will gladly refer you to our satisfied clients so you can be confident in your decision to hire our Firm. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free personal consultation with Omar Arcia, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com to schedule your appointment online.

What is ADM? By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.
B
iomaterials called “acellular dermal matri -
ces” (ADMs) have provided a valuable tool in both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. Introduced in 1994, initially as a soft tissue substitute in skin grafting and breast reconstruction after mastectomy, these materials are now utilized in secondary breast augmentation procedures and in abdominal wall reconstruction for support. The most commonly used products are Strattice™, Alloderm®, and BellaDerm®. They function in the body by providing a framework for tissue regeneration. All types of ADMs are made from skin from which cells have been removed, leaving behind a sterile framework or “lattice” of tissue that the patient’s own cells can grow into and eventually replace. Using ADMs to support the lower border of a reconstructed breast helps to avoid the problems associated with limited soft tissue coverage over a tissue expander or breast implant. These biomaterials are associated with good functional and cosmetic outcomes with a low complication rate. Initially, ADMs were used in implant reconstruction after mastectomy for breast cancer and as an alternative to skin grafting in burn patients. Presently, acellular dermal matrix tissues are used to reduce hardening known as capsular contracture after breast augmentation and to manage problems related to incorrect implant position or “rippling” from thinning of skin or breast tissue. With the success of these matrix materials, Allergan introduced a newer product known as SERI surgical scaffold. This product received FDA approval in 2009 and is a unique knitted, multifilament, bioengineered long-term bioresorbable scaffold. Unlike the ADMs, it is derived from silk that has been Biosilk purified to yield ultrapure fibroin. This product slowly absorbs over time as the patient’s own tissue grows into the scaffold through neovascularization. This material serves as an “internal bra” support for the breast implant or native breast tissue. I have used both the ADM materials and SERI scaffold successfully in cases of breast implant malposition, such as symmastia, “bottoming out,” and in cases of “rippling.” With advancing technology and evidence based medicine, breast reconstructive and revisionary surgery can be performed safely and successfully with low complication rates. Approach to breast reconstruction and revision surgery now involves multimodal techniques with use of highly cohesive silicone gel implants, acellular dermal matrices, and autologous fat transplants. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Embarrassment may make us hesitant to discuss issues with the reproductive organs and the pelvic floor. Pregnancy and delivery can cause injury to the pelvic ligaments and muscles that support the uterus and vagina; this can lead to immediate or delayed relaxation of the pelvic organs. The delayed relaxation can be worsened by aging and the loss of estrogen following menopause. This loss of support can lead to a descent of the pelvic organs into or out of the vaginal opening. The medical term for this condition is pelvic organ prolapse. Prolapse can cause a variety of symptoms. Many women feel a bulge in the vagina or may experience pelvic pressure and discomfort. bladder or bowels may also occur. Women with prolapse often have associated leakage of urine or overactive bladder, which causes urgency and frequent urination. The first step is for a woman to have a detailed evaluation by a physician who has been trained in the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse. For a smaller or less severe prolapse, pelvic floor exercises (Kegel’s) can improve symptoms related to muscle weakness. Some women can strengthen these muscles on their own with daily practice. Other patients may benefit from working with a pelvic floor physical therapist. Women with more advanced or bothersome prolapse often require additional interventions. There are both surgical and nonsurgical options for this condition. A more conservative option for the treatment of prolapse is the use of a pessary. A pessary is a silicone device that sits inside the vagina to support a prolapsed uterus or vagina. Pessaries come in many different shapes and sizes. A pessary needs to be specially fitted for each woman by a trained provider. A more advanced treatment option is to have a surgical repair to correct the prolapse. Nearly all prolapse repairs can be performed using the minimally invasive techniques of vaginal and robotic surgery; these procedures aim to recreate normal vaginal support and improve associated bladder and bowel symptoms. The most appropriate surgery will be different for each woman. An individualized treatment approach will devise a surgical plan that will minimize risks while maximizing potential for long-term success and satisfaction. ne of the areas of law which my firm han -
dles is paternity. When a child is born to parents who are not married, a Paternity issue arises. A Paternity lawsuit can be brought by either the mother or the father of the child. The purpose of the lawsuit is usually to establish the rights of the parents and establish a child support obligation. Most people however do not have knowledge of the laws in this state concerning unwed parents who have a child. When they come in for a consultation they are usually quite surprised as to the state of the law. In Florida, if the parents are not married there is no presumption as to who the father is. The purpose of filing a paternity action is to establish who the father is, and, as such, determine the respective rights and responsibilities of the parties. Florida Statutes state: “Any woman who is pregnant or has a child, any man who has reason to believe he is the father of a child, or any child may bring proceedings in the circuit court, in chancery, to determine the paternity of the child when paternity has not been established by law or otherwise.” As stated above, a mother can file a paternity action against the father of the child or a father can file one against the mother. If either party denies the paternity, a DNA test will be ordered to determine who the father is. Once paternity is established, the father has all of the rights and responsibilities of any father would have, which would include child support and time sharing. If the parties maintain their relationship, the issue of paternity rarely is a concern. It is only when the parties have conflict that the lack of an order of paternity can complicate matters. As an example, consider a non-married couple who were never married and had a child together. There is no issue as to who the father is. The couple is not living together, but has followed a time sharing schedule which is satisfactory to both parties. In addition, the father has been financially supporting the child. Since the issue of paternity has never been an issue in their lives, a court order was never sought. What might happen if the parties’ relationship deteriorates? What if the mother suddenly denies the same time sharing to the father? What if the father suddenly stops contributing financial support for the child? These are the issues that I often see in my office. What can be done? Unfortunately, until such time as paternity is established by law the father will not have the ability to file a motion to enforce his time sharing because there is no presumption that he is the father. On the other hand, the mother will not be able to immediately pursue her child support for the same reason. Establishing paternity early on will eliminate these potential problems. It is only when the parents wait until a crisis occurs that problems arise. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. T
he possibility of losing one’ s hair after being
diagnosed with cancer is a side effect that both men and women fear most. Chemotherapeutic drugs, which are medications used in treating cancer, have been well documented to cause anywhere from mild thinning to total hair loss. These drugs tend to attack rapidly growing cells in the body in an attempt to kill the fast growing cancer cells. Hair cells are one of our rapidly growing cells and therefore are also attacked by these agents, leading to this common side effect. The exact type of chemotherapeutic drug used, the dose given to treat a specific cancer (either high or low dose), and the way it is administered (by mouth versus injected) all contribute to how mild or severe the hair loss will be. One upside to the hair loss associated with these agents is that in the majority of cases, but not all, the loss is completely reversible. This occurs because the drug affects the rapidly dividing matrix hair cells, BUT not the dormant stem cell that will eventually reinitiate the cycle of hair growth. Although these drugs are well known to cause hair loss, what many patients don’t realize is that they can also lead to changes in the characteristics of hair once it grows back. Common changes include: grey hair, altered texture, curlier or straighter hair than before, and/or growth at a different speed than in the past. In addition, although we usually speak of hair loss to the head, all hairs on the body are vulnerable to the above effects. This includes eyebrows, eyelashes, armpits, groin and any body hair.

Chemotherapy and Hair Loss
October 2014 | Our City Pembroke PInes
Typically, once an individual starts undergoing chemotherapy they will usually see hair loss within two weeks; however, the severity and quickness of the loss will depend on the therapy used. The loss is usually evident by groups of hairs found on the pillow or sheets of the bed, or increasing number of hairs caught in the shower drain and on a comb or brush. Once cancer treatment is completed, the hair loss will continue to occur for a few more weeks before it starts to slow down and eventually stop. Hair usually starts to grow back within 3-4 months. There are a few ways that have been documented to help decrease hair loss related with chemotherapy. The first is called scalp hypothermia and involves placing ice packs on the head during chemotherapy infusion. The decrease in skin temperature induced by the ice packs cause less blood flow in that area of the head and consequently less chemotherapy delivered. Since less cancer treatment drug is therefore exposed to those hair follicles, the severity of the hair loss will be diminished. The second technique is called scalp tourniquet. This procedure is done by placing compression bandages to the head. The bandages also decease blood flow to the scalp where we want to protect the existing hair (just as with hypothermia). The concern with both techniques however, is that they lead to decrease blood flow and chemotherapy to the scalp. The possibility of cancer cells surviving in the scalp being protected by these treatments, leads to a small but real risk of cancer recurrence. Lastly, the studies on Rogaine have shown that although it did not demonstrate any significant decreased hair loss during treatment with chemotherapy, it did help patients regain their hair back faster and stronger than normal. Hair Loss Solutions is located at 17900 NW 5th Street, Suite #203-C, in Pembroke Pines. participating in our “Re-engage, Recycle and Reinvigorate Our Environment” program, the City was just recognized by the Florida League of Cities for this very program. We are proud to be the recipient of the League’s Environmental Stewardship Award, which rallied boomer generation volunteers to increase recycling and the reuse of materials. The pilot community, Hollybrook, reduced its solid waste collection from six to three times per week. Recycling increased from two tons per month to an average of 25 tons per month. The program cost is minimal, but, the environmental impact is huge. It’s important to be aware that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) finalized the new flood maps. The new flood maps will help all community officials and citizens be better prepared for flood related disasters by providing an official depiction of flood hazards for Pembroke Pines and the rest of Broward County.

I encourage residents and businesses in Pembroke Pines to view the new flood maps to better understand your potential flood risk and to help identify steps that may need to be taken to protect against property damage and loss. You can view the maps at: www.broward.org/PermittingAndLicensing/Licensing/Engineering/ FloodZonemaps/Pages/Default.aspx. Most of our city has been dropped from the latest maps, while other areas will see they’ve been added. Despite the fact that people may not need flood insurance to keep their federally regulated or insured mortgages, common sense tells you that flooding can occur during the extreme weather we’ve seen lately, wherever you live. Breast Cancer and Beyond One in eight women will get breast cancer. However, thanks to earlier detection, new treatments and a better understanding of the disease, more women are surviving. Breast Cancer Epidemiology A gene can develop an abnormality that changes how the cell works. The most common causes of hereditary breast cancer include mutations in the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 gene. There are other hereditary causes of breast cancer, but these are the most prevalent. These genes can be inherited from either parent. High-risk women, as indicated by a personal or a strong family history, can be tested to screen for mutations in the BRCA genes.

lantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the

Overactive Bladder Research Study If you experience a frequent and sudden urge to urinate, followed by leakage or bladder control problems, you may be eligible to participate in the SYNERGY study.
