Happy Halloween
I
f your family is like mine, Halloween is one of your kids’ favorite holidays. This seems a bit strange to me, when you think about the origins of this holiday. The word Halloween is a contraction for All Hallow’s Eve, a Christian day of remembrance believed to have been established in the 8th century by Pope Gregory III. It was a quiet somber day. So, how did we get from silently meditating about dead saints to carving pumpkins, overeating candy and dressing up like our favorite super-villain or princess? The answer, it seems, is that like many modern holidays, Halloween is actually an amalgamation of a number of different traditions. Historians believe that many of our current Halloween customs have their roots in the British Isles. In the 16th century, youths in parts of Ireland and Scotland would go from house to house impersonating old spirits. They would threaten mischief if they were not greeted and offered food. This is where the phrase “Trick or Treat” originated. Over time, these mostly Pagan traditions became commercialized to become the Halloween we know today: a day when children dress up as superheroes and collect candy; a time when teens participate in, hopefully, harmless pranks; and a night when young adults frequent parties, dressed as any number of things. However you chose to celebrate, have a Happy Halloween! Sincerely,
Terry Jaillet President & Publisher

M
ore than 800 treasure seekers are expected to attend the City of Pembroke Pines Community Center Antiques and Collectibles Show, benefiting the Southwest Focal Point Community Center. It will be held on October 8, from 9am to 4pm, and October 9, from 10am to 4pm, at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center, 301 NW 103rd Avenue. “Visitors come to browse through toys, books, clothes, glassware and collectibles of a long-forgotten era… to reminisce of a simpler time,” said Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing for the City of Pembroke Pines. “Times they’ve forgotten about until they see an item that reminds them of a ‘time way back when…’” This is the 13th year of the antique show, which has grown throughout the years. It is offered twice a year. This month, it will bring together more than 40 dealers from across the country that will display their items in a clean, air conditioned room. There will be a treasure trove of quality antiques and collectibles, including depression glass, vintage postcards, tools, linens, silver, toys, jewelry, small furniture, books, lamps, quilts, coins, military, pottery, clocks, art and much more. Plant and orchid dealers will be at the show on both days and an antique appraiser will be available on Sunday for a fee of $3 per item. Emilio’s
Café will also be open for homemade meals, snacks and refreshments. Pembroke Pines resident Paul Harris is looking forward to the show. “You never know what you might find,” said Harris. “I just bought a new house and I am hoping to find lots of goodies to fill it.” Gladys Point also plans to attend. “I collect coins and always find some rare ones,” said Point. Proceeds from the antique show will benefit the SWFPCC. The 53,000-square-foot facility offers a multitude of services and is the site for many special city events. Pembroke Pines Remembers 9/11 COMMUNITY NEWS
By Debby Teich
16
O
ver 400 people attended the 15th Annual City of Pembroke Pines Patriot Day Honor Ceremony at the City’s Memorial Pavilion to remember those lives lost to terrorism on September 11, 2001. The audience was filled with survivors, families who lost loved ones, local fire fighters, and police task force units. This year’s ceremony featured United States Army Colonel Thomas W. Hanley, now assigned to the Headquarters of the United States Southern Command, who addressed the crowd along with Mayor Frank C. Ortis; Vice Mayor Carl Shechter; and Pembroke Pines Commissioners Iris Siple, Angelo Castillo and Jay Schwartz. Colonel Hanley spoke candidly about his experiences relating to 9/11. He described the abrupt end to a phone call on the morning of September 11, 2001, from an employee he had recently promoted into a position that prompted her relocation to an office in the Pentagon. During the Remembrance Ceremony, the City of Pembroke Pines Police and the Fire Department Honor Guards participated in the Presentation of Colors; Pastor Peter Tokar gave an invocation; Mayor Ortis led the Pledge of Allegiance and Katie Harmon sang the National Anthem. At 8:46am, the moment the first plane crashed into Tower 1, the crowd was silent as a 10-second siren sounded, Kenny Ahern played the bag pipes, and
the flags were lowered. The one hour program ended as the City of Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School chorus sang patriotic songs. On September 11, 2011, the tenth anniversary of the attack on Freedom, the City of Pembroke Pines unveiled its September 11th Memorial at the Pembroke Pines City Center Memorial Pavilion. It includes four steel and one marble sculpture created by Pembroke Pines artists Felix Gonzalez and Ben Menasche. The sculptures are currently located at 10300 Pines Boulevard in Pembroke Pines. In 2017, they will be relocated to the new Pembroke Pines City Hall/Civic Center, where they will be indoors and protected from the elements. “For the past five years, our Pembroke Pines Memorial Pavilion has been open for people to visit, mediate, pray and remember,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “This moving and powerful creation has honored the 9/11 victims, survivors and those who assisted in the recovery.” Residents can submit photos of Military loved ones, living or deceased, for permanent display on the “Salute OUR Soldiers” wall located on the first floor of Pembroke Pines City Hall. To submit a photo or for information, call 954-392-2116, visit www.ppines.com or send an email to FNovo@ppines.com.

2nd Annual Employment Expo Connects US Military Veterans and Employers Debby Teich
U
nited States military veterans have experience working as part of a team to accomplish difficult tasks in a stressful environment, so they should have no problem finding jobs. Unfortunately, that is not often the case. On November 1, from 10am – 2pm, the Southwest Focal Point Community Center will be reaching out to veterans and potential employers to help connect them at a job fair. “The first Veterans Employment Expo attracted over 200 veterans, many who came prepared with resumes, all with a desire for continued success through meaningful employment in the private sector,” said Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing for the City of Pembroke Pines. At the job fair, veterans will have an opportunity to meet with human resources professionals who will review and discuss existing resumes and make recommendations, if necessary, to enhance the resume. They can also visit with over 60 Veteran-friendly employers, ranging from Federal law enforcement and county government agencies to area family-owned businesses. “Veterans are encouraged to dress for success to make the most of meeting future employers at the Employment Expo,” said Shechter, “We all know the importance of making a good first impression.” The Veteran’s Employment Expo is part of the City of Pembroke Pines Re-Energize and Re-Connect Initiative, which has a goal of providing resources and housing at the R & R Village for Active and Honorably Discharged Members of the military. “Assisting members of the military and their families transition into civilian life is important to our community and country,” said Shechter
The Southwest Focal Point Community Center is located at 301 NW 103 Avenue in Pembroke Pines. The Center is a popular rental venue for celebrations, seminars, and other events throughout the year. It also offers a wide variety of daytime, afternoon and evening classes taught by top notch instructors at affordable fees. To view the current list of classes, activities and events, visit www. ppines.com and click on Departments and select Community Services. Pembroke Pines Resident Writes Chess Book for Kids Debby Teich
L
ucio Garay has been playing chess for over 35 years. The Pembroke Pines resident has fond memories of his granduncle teaching him the game when he was just a child. He recently wrote “Chess 4 Kids: A Book of Chess Instructions, Tactics, & More!” to share his knowledge with children who want to learn how to play. The book is written in kid-friendly language with accompanying pictures to illustrate concepts throughout. “It is a basic instructional chess book that clarifies common misconceptions that students typically have about the game,” said Garay. “It also includes opening principles and some advanced tactics. With this information at a starting level, a child can go much further than simply picking up a chess board game and reading the included instructions.” Garay currently teaches chess to over 900 students at Franklin Academy, both full-time during the day and in after school clubs. He says that the book is essentially his first year class wrapped up into one manual. It serves as a remediation and enrichment tool for kids who need additional guidance or want to improve their game

over school breaks. With a new chess movie in the theaters, he also wanted to inspire children who do not have the opportunity to learn the game at school. Garay says that practice is the key to success. The book also includes other advice, such as controlling the center and remembering to always castle. “An instructional sheet will typically tell you how to castle, but will not tell you that you should always do it or why you do it,” said Garay. “My book explains the ‘what’ and ‘why’ in creative detail.” According to Garay, the county requires all second and third grade students to take chess lessons through a video-based instructional model. At Franklin Academy, however, it is part of the curriculum from kindergarten Lucio Garay through 8th grade. The school has a chess team that competes at the school, local and state levels. Last year was the inaugural year and the students placed third in the state. The school hopes to improve each year, as the students excel at the game. “Chess helps students with critical thinking skills,
OCTOBER 2016 | Our City Pembroke Pines
logical reasoning, and analyzing strategies,” said Garay. “This not only helps for the game, but helps them with everyday life skills.” Although this is Garay’s first book, he says he has plenty of ideas and manuscripts that are not yet published. When he is not playing chess, he can usually be found playing with a Rubik’s cube, doing magic, juggling, playing basketball or involved in anything trivia related. To purchase the book, visit www.Amazon. com and search Lucio Garay or “Chess 4 Kids: A Book of Chess Instructions, Tactics, & More!”
Pembroke Pines Residents to Take the Stage for Young Stars Showcase

n November 6, Pembroke Pines residents Nick Merico, 20, and Cameron Wheeler, 16, will take the stage for the 7th annual Aventura Mall Young Stars Showcase at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, at 5pm. More than 300 people are expected to attend the event that features youngsters ages 12-21. Proceeds will benefit the Aventura Marketing Council Education Foundation, which funds educational outreaches through mentorships, jobs, community service projects, scholarships and working with at-promise students. “I’ve been to New York and Las Vegas numerous times and have seen kids perform on Broadway and the Vegas Strip,” said Aventura Marketing Council Chairman Cliff Schulman. “These youngsters are not far away from being able to do that! I am thrilled we are able to give young talent in South Florida this opportunity and present such a professional show for the community.” Nick got his first big acting job at age 16, when he was cast in Nickelodeon’s Every Witch Way, which ran for four seasons and ended in July 2015. He played the role of Daniel Miller, captain of the swim team and love interest of the main witch, Emma Alonso. He has also appeared in several television commercials, as well as in Charlie’s Angels and Haunted Hathaways. Nick is currently focusing on composing and writing original music, which is a mix of pop balladry with a bit of soul and R&B funk. “Music is basically my heartbeat and the stage is like my throne,” said Nick. “It’s very natural for me to be there. I love the energy and the crowds. I love being immersed in the music and the moment. It’s my greatest joy. Cameron has been performing since she was in a play in the City of Pembroke Pines summer camp and got hooked at the age of eight. She is currently a junior at American Heritage, where she is on a full musical theater scholarship. She is a singer, actor and dancer. She also plays the guitar, piano and ukulele. She is a member of the Phil and Orianne Collins’ Little Dreams Foundation, has won several local voice competitions, performed voiceover work for films, and more. She is planning to pursue music professionally, either through the theater or as a solo artist.
“Singing and theater are my passions,” said Cameron. “This is where I’m the happiest and I can be creative. I love singing many styles of music, including oldies, pop, jazz and some Spanish. I also truly enjoy performing in musicals and straight plays. I especially love playing roles that challenge my vocals, as well as my acting.” For information, call 305-932-5334 or visit www.theyss.org.

our smile is the first thing most people notice about you, so you want to make sure it is as perfect as can be. Ortho Smiles of Pembroke Pines, a full service Orthodontic Dental office for children and adults, is designed to provide just that. Their dedicated team, led by Dr. Gina Cozzarelli, offers an array of orthodontic procedures in a beautifully decorated, welcoming office offering state-ofthe-art care. With more than five years of experience, Ortho Smiles has the knowledge and skills to achieve beautiful results every time. Dr. Cozzarelli answered some commonly asked questions about her practice.
Describe the practice. We have a fun and inno-
vative office that offers Orthodontics (braces) and dental appliances for children and adults. Our office has the latest orthodontic equipment and we strive to provide our patients with a caring, professional and unparalleled level of service.
What is your background? I obtained my dental
degree from Francisco Marroquin University in Guatemala City. I then completed a one-year residency program in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at Nova Southeastern University, College of Dental Medicine, followed by a threeyear international dental student program, obtaining my doctor in dental medicine degree. At the same time, I served as Teaching Assistant in the Community Dentistry Department. I was then accepted in the Orthodontic Specialty Program at the same institution, obtaining my specialty degree in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics in 2009, serving also as Teaching Assistant of the Orthodontic Department.
Describe your office environment. Our office
always has the latest orthodontic equipment and methods available. We treat each patient like family. You will never feel like a number at our practice. Building a lasting relationship with our smiling patients is key.
What is special about your staff? Our fully
trained, fun and caring staff will always be willing to help you though your treatment. They will enrich your experience at our office.

(clear) braces, Invisalign, Incognito, as well as TMJ

appliances. We treat complete cases, as well as phase 1, which are commonly orthopedic treatments.
Do you offer orthodontic care for adults? Yes, we
have many adults in treatment. Our office is designed for both children and adults.
Do you treat children with special needs? Yes, the doctor sees patients with special needs. We feel these are our happiest of patients.
Dr. Gina Cozzarelli treats a patient.
What differentiates your practice from the competition? The dif-
ference is we love what we do and it shows. Our priority is how we treat our patients. We strive to educate our patients, provide excellent service and make their healthy smiles lifelong. Our goal is to have satisfied patients and we manage to reach that goal each and every time.
Describe the new process for taking impressions. The new 3M™ True Definition
Scanner Monitor and Wand uses 3D-in-motion video technology. It generates a true replica of the patient’s oral anatomy in real time and gives us more visibility, control and accuracy. The innovative design is fast, easy and comfortable for patients.
What is Phase 1 or ‘interceptive’ orthodontic treatment (Early orthodontic treatment)?
Phase I orthodontic treatment, also called ‘interceptive orthodontic treatment,’ refers to treatment that begins at an early age, and this ‘first phase of orthodontic treatment’ typically takes place when a young patient has both primary teeth, as well as some adult teeth present. If Dr. Cozzarelli should recommend a Phase I treatment, it is for a good reason, as such a treatment plan that will correct a dental/developmental issue and prevent a current dental or jaw development problem from becoming more severe.
The Ortho Smiles team is dedicated and experienced.
OCTOBER 2016 | Our City Pembroke Pines
What are some of the problems that can be corrected with Phase I? There are a number of problems concerning tooth alignment, crowding and spacing, gum or periodontal health, jaws and facial development that can be corrected with Phase I treatment.
Is a second phase of treatment necessary?
It is usual, but not always necessary, that a second phase of treatment will be needed after this first phase. Typically, the second phase of treatment is of shorter duration, reflecting the benefit of early intervention of the first phase of treatment.
At what age does Phase I typically begin?
Phase I treatment typically begins between the early ages of 6-10 years, and it is for this reason that any concerns be discussed with the orthodontist by no later than age 7 or 8. In fact, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that all children have an orthodontic evaluation by 7 years of age. Having an early consultation with Dr. Cozzarelli is the best way to ensure that your child’s growth and dental development are optimal.
Why is Phase I typically done? Some com-
mon reasons or indications for Phase I treatment are dental cross-bites, skeletal crossbites, under bites, excessively overlapping or deep bites, open bites , jaw growth or jaws that are not in proportion to each other, severely protruding teeth, the presence of deleterious thumb, finger or tongue habits, clefts, or severe crowding or spacing of the teeth. Often early treatment turns severe problems that might require future jaw surgery into a more moderate problem that can be treated with braces or orthodontics alone after. Ortho Smiles is located at 302 N.W. 179 Ave, Suite #201-A in Pembroke Pines. The office is open Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. For information, call 954-404-6712, send an email to info@getorthosmiles.com, visit www.getorthosmiles.com or find it on Facebook at Ortho Smiles.

Miracle League Kicks Off Fall Season SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS
By Debby Teich

ho says that miracles can’t happen? The West Pembroke Pines Optimist Miracle League recently held Opening Ceremonies to kick off its 10th Anniversary season, which runs through November 18. Approximately 65 children with disabilities took to the field for a friendly game of baseball. The bleachers were filled parents, friends and relatives cheering throughout the game. Students from Flanagan High School’s baseball team served as the Angels in the outfield and assisted each player. Commissioners Iris Siple and Jay Schwartz threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Singer/songwriter Ariel Rose sang the National Anthem. A group of original volunteers, including those from Memorial Healthcare Systems, were given a tribute. “This program affords our special kids the opportunity to participate in America’s past time and build lifelong friends and relationships” said Frank Marquez, who cofounded the league and serves as coach/president. “It is truly remarkable what this program has evolved to. This only happens when great people come together to make a positive impact in the lives of others.” The Miracle League provides opportunities for children, ages 5 to 21, with special needs and disabilities. The West Pembroke Pines Optimist Club runs the program with assistance from the City. It is sponsored by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, which
provides players with a full uniform, team pictures, trophies and more. There is no cost to participate. The League is held at Rose G. Price Park, which has a field with a special rubberized surface that makes it accessible for individuals with wheelchairs or other assistive walking devices. Games are held on Friday nights at 7pm. Everyone plays two innings; there are no outs; and the only rule is to have fun. “The parents get to sit back and enjoy watching their kids play the game of baseball,” said Mario Salceda, Administrator for Memorial Healthcare System, who co-founded the league and serves as coach/treasurer. “It is such a great feeling when you see the smile on their faces.” Daniel Estrada, 24, has participated in the Miracle League for the past ten seasons. “He enjoys the game of baseball like any other young guy,” said his mother, Mara Duarte. “He is able to have community integration with his peers and also exercise to maintain a healthy body. These men and women offer these kids something special that means a lot to so many, and all they expect is the love they get from these kids.” Rose G. Price Park is located at 901 NW 208th Avenue. Surviving Breast Cancer From diagnosis and beyond – a roadmap for life.
Thomas Samuel, MD Breast Oncologist
Joylene Sutton-Aransevia, ARNP Nurse Practitioner
“You are cancer free.” These are words that not only bring a wave of relief, but also the desire to get back to life as you knew it, before breast cancer. But, as a breast cancer survivor, you still need to think about your long-term health and well being. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Survivorship Care Program offers the much-needed ongoing support, along with a roadmap to your future. Whether you have just completed treatment or are a long-term survivor, under the direction of breast oncologist, Thomas Samuel, MD, and Joylene Sutton-Aransevia ARNP, the Survivorship Care Program offers the support you need to become empowered and take charge of your life going forward. “First, a treatment plan summary is provided, so patients can see the journey they have traveled to beat breast cancer,” explains Dr. Samuel. “Then, we add a roadmap that will guide them through the next several
years. This outlines standard screenings, follow-up care for physician visits, as well as necessary lab work. In addition, the program educates patients about the possible longterm effects of their treatments, identifying signs and symptoms to be aware of, and how to seek help if they occur.” This provides survivors the opportunity to think about how they want to live going forward. “Being diagnosed with breast cancer and going through the rigorous treatment is a life-changing experience,” explains Joylene Sutton-Aransevia, ARNP. “Many patients adopt a new lifestyle and look forward with a better outlook on life. Our program helps patients reconstruct, rebuild and redeem their lives.” Just as Cleveland Clinic’s approach to the treatment of cancer includes a multidisciplinary team method, the survivorship care team is also comprised of physicians, nurse practitioners, social workers, nutritionists and other support groups. By providing a comprehensive overview plan, the Survivorship Care Program guides patients as they continue their journey along the pathway to wellness, looking forward to life as a survivor.

Pooches in Pines Holds 1st Annual Fur Ball Gala SECTION HEAD community news

f you have lost your dog and you live in the city of Pembroke Pines, Pooches in Pines may have found it. The 501c3 volunteer organization works with the Pembroke Pines Police Department’s Animal Assistance Program to reunite dogs, found by the Pembroke Pines Police, with their owners and/or re-home dogs that have been abandoned, abused or neglected as a result of police calls for service in the City of Pembroke Pines. On October 22, Pooches in Pines will hold its 1st Annual Pooches in Pines Fur Ball Gala, from 6pm to 11pm, at Club Nineteen, 10500 Taft Street. The event is sponsored by City of Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis and hosted by Stephanie Bertini and Carlos De Vega Coll. Tickets cost $100 per person and include an open bar cocktail hour, hors d’oeuvres, sit down dinner, live and silent auctions, cigar roller, win pull, specialty cocktails in hand painted glasses, photo opportunities, dancing and more. “The goal of the Fur Ball Gala is to raise funds to support the compassionate and humane works of Pooches in Pines in their care for creatures that have no voice,” said Mayor Ortis. Since Pooches in Pines was formed in 2011, it has reunited or re-homed over 975 lost dogs, as well as various other animals. To accomplish this goal, volunteers use social media and the city’s website; network with the Broward Care and Adoption Center; log the dogs at the dispatch center; hang signs in the area where the dog was located and more. The City of Pembroke Pines Commission recently passed a motion to make it an official charity of the City. When the owner cannot be found, Pooches in Pines works with rescue groups and volunteers to achieve its secondary goal of re-homing the dogs in its care. All of the dogs are seen by a veterinarian to be vaccinated, spayed, neutered, and microchipped. They also undergo any minor surgery deemed necessary. They are then placed in loving temporary foster homes until a new permanent home is found through the adoption process. Pooches in Pines is 100% operated by volunteers, who have regular full time jobs outside of the program. Most of them are sworn and non-sworn PPPD personnel who walk, feed, bathe and play with the dogs during their breaks or before
and after work. Although kennel facilities to shelter the dogs are provided by the PPPD, all expenses necessary to care for the animals, including the cost of the veterinarian, are solely dependent on private donations. Pooches in Pines is always in need of foster homes for dogs or cats, people willing to put up signs when dogs are found and dog-related donations. For tickets, call 954-445-2991 or 954-658-4084. For more information or to volunteer, visit PoochesInPines.com.
Pooches in Pines Kennel Dedicated to Michael Hones By Debby Teich
R
etired police officer and animal advocate Michael Hones loved animals. He was known as the “go to guy” by his fellow officers for accessing veterinarian or other resources that could assist an animal in need of services. Unfortunately, he passed away earlier this year. His family was recently invited by Pembroke Pines city and police officials, as well as Pooches in Pines members, to officially open the Animal Assistance Program/Pooches in Pines kennel in his memory. “Mike was an outstanding animal advocate who consistently went above and beyond caring for the many dogs and cats in need of a home and protection,” said Pembroke Pines Police Chief Dan Guistino. “Mike will be missed; however, his spirit will continue to live on with our very positive Animal Assistance Program. It is very fitting that the kennel be dedicated in his name.” The air conditioned kennel has an intake area for animal assessment and can house up to four dogs. The kennels are spacious and provide 24-hour access to an outdoor area for playing or a call from nature. “Police officers respond to a call for service involving a lost or abandoned dog and transport them back to our kennel facility in the hopes of reuniting them with their owner,” said Pembroke Pines Police Sergeant Stacy Jurgens, who oversees the Animal Assistance Program. “In the case of dogs that are not claimed, we try very hard to re-home them.” Pooches in Pines, a 501c3, relies upon donations of unopened dog related items (food, toys, bathing supplies, towels, collars, leashes), as well as a group of dedicated volunteers who help on a daily basis. Volunteers walk, feed and bathe the dogs; clean kennels; spread the word about dogs in need of a home and more. Most importantly, they provide what the dogs need most - attention, interaction and love. “Our volunteers are an amazing group of people and they play an important role in the daily operation of the kennel,” said Jurgens. To make a donation or volunteer, call 954-436-3269. For information, visit www.poochesinpines.com.

Seniors Audition for Miami HEAT Golden Oldies SECTION HEAD community news

pproximately 50 seniors did not let their age get in the way. The vivacious group recently auditioned for 19 spots on the Miami HEAT Golden Oldies at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center in Pembroke Pines. Although all of them were age 60 or over, they worked on mastering the latest dance moves with rhythm and style. “The Miami HEAT Golden Oldies bring passion and energy to the AmericanAirlines Arena and the in-game experience,” said Clara Stroude-Vasquez, Miami HEAT Marketing Manager. “This beloved and dedicated squad has been performing for HEAT Nation for over 10 years. And their enthusiasm is both contagious and irresistible.” The Golden Oldies have become one of the NBA’s most popular senior citizen dance team. During the audition, the Miami HEAT was looking for the hippest, coolest, and youngat-heart senior citizens to be a part of its 2016-2017 senior citizen hip-hop dance team. Wearing the required red, black, and/or white outfit, as well as dance or athletic shoes, men and women from all over South Florida brought their “A” game to the audition. As they worked up a sweat, they were judged on their overall presence, as well as their smile, performance and energy. Only the best dancers made the cut to the second round of auditions. “The members of the 2016-17 Golden Oldies Dance Team showed off some serious moves during auditions, certain to bring the HEAT audiences to their feet,” said Jay Shechter Director of Community Services and Housing for the City of Pembroke Pines.

n recognition of National Hispanic Heritage month, seniors once again competed for the title of “Spelling Bee Champion.” The 5th Annual Senior Spanish Spelling Bee was held at the City of Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Community Center. “Every year we see an increase in participants,” said Silvia A. Aguilar, SWFP Community Services Administrator. “It takes a lot of courage to get on stage and participate under pressure with so many people watching.” Pembroke Pines Director of Community Services and Housing Jay Shechter, who loves to play Scrabble, came up with the idea for a Spelling Bee several years ago. After holding the first two in English, the Spanish-speaking seniors wanted a turn. The next contest was in Spanish, in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month. The contest was open to those 60 and older. Teresa Meyers, activities specialist, and Hope Baker, recreation aide served as judges; Fernanda Pineda assisted as the stage monitor and Martha Castilleja was the recording Judge. The tension was high, as contestants spelled a wide range of words using the pronunciation from the Spanish alphabet, including any special punctuation. The contest started with easy words, such as “blusa” and “hablar” and progressed with more difficult ones. Once contestants misspelled a word, they were eliminated. Rosa Yanes was declared the winner after she correctly spelled “precisión,” which means “to be exact, correct or accurate” in both English and Spanish. She received $50. Silvia Wikander was the second place winner ($30) and Silvia Romero won third place ($20). All three also received a Certificate of Recognition and earned bragging rights for the year. “Our members always enjoy the excitement that the competition brings when competing with their friends,” said Suzy Felix, activities coordinator. The SWFP Community Center is a popular rental venue for celebrations, seminars, and other events throughout the year. The Center provides a friendly comfortable atmosphere, where members may volunteer, learn or enhance talents/

Work Accident – What If? LEGALLY SPEAKING
By Mayleidys Porraspita, Esquire
W
hat if you are injured at work and all your benefits are stopped, because there is a gap in the law? What do you do? How do you support yourself and your family? This is what happened to 53-year-old firefighter Bradley Westphal, when he seriously injured his back and left knee while fighting a house fire. After his injury, he had to undergo multiple surgical procedures, including a spinal fusion. Due to the severity of his injuries, Mr. Westphal was unable to return to work during the duration of his treatment and received indemnity benefits (66% of his average weekly earnings) for 104 weeks – the maximum amount of time allowed per statute. The injured firefighter faced a serious problem. At the end of the 104 weeks, he was still not released by doctors to return to work and had not yet reached a point of MMI (Maximum Medical Improvement - defined as the date where no further lasting recovery can be reasonably anticipated). Mr. Westphal was not eligible for any type of permanent disability and yet was no longer eligible for any type of temporary disability. If you are wondering what he was eligible for, the answer is – nothing! Mr. Westphal, who had been injured while risking his life fighting a fire, was now left with no rights to claim any type of indemnity benefits. In other words, from the end of the 104 weeks of benefits until the time the doctors (chosen by the insurance company) placed him at MMI, Mr. Westphal would not be entitled to receive any monetary compensation for the time he was missing from work. Fortunately for our firefighter and many Claimants left in this same position, Mr. Westphal’s attorneys fought for his rights. The Court, earlier this year, found that this gap in rights and benefits was unconstitutional, because it deprived the Claimant of critical benefits during a critical time. Bradley Westphal v. City of St. Petersburg, (Fla. 2016). The Court held that the 104 weeks limit was unconstitutional and extended the rights to 260 weeks. This results in an extension of benefits from 2 years to 5 years. In other words, a Claimant who is unable to return to work in any capacity as a result of a work injury is now entitled to receive Temporary Total Disability (66% of his average weekly earnings) for up to five years if he/she has not yet reached MMI. This extension in time provides Claimant’s the ability to fully recover without the risk of being left in a situation where they can’t provide for their family. Without a doubt, this change in the law will lead the insurance companies to come up with innovative ways to limit the Claimant’s new benefits. As a Claimant, you must be prepared and informed. A knowledgeable Workers’ Compensation attorney can guide you through the system ensuring that you timely and properly receive the benefits you are due. Most importantly, you are not burdened with the cost of legal representation, since the attorney representing the Claimant only gets paid when benefits are secured for the Claimant and these costs are usually the responsibility of the insurance carrier who has failed to timely and properly provide the benefits. If you or a loved one has been injured at work, please contact our office to find out how we can help you. The Law Offices of Mayleidys Porraspita, P.A. are located in Pembroke Pines. If you have any questions regarding the matter discussed in the article above or any other Worker’s Compensation question or concern, call 800-492-5455. Hablamos Espanol.

Using a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Plan to Keep Your Home and Investment Properties for Much Less than You Owe By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
M
ost consumers are familiar with a simple Chapter 7 bankruptcy, in which all of the debtor’s assets are liquidated and all unsecured debt, such as credit cards and medical bills, are wiped out. Did you know that within a Chapter 7 your lender has the right to continue a foreclosure process on your home if you owe more than the market value of the home? Many consumers are unaware of the far reaching benefits of a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Unlike a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, under a Chapter 13 a debtor restructures instead of liquidating debts. A Chapter 13 debtor is able to repay, over a period of 3-5 years, all mortgage arrearages, late fees, escrow shortages, and even past due homeowner association (HOA) dues. Also, credit card and other unsecured debt can be eliminated or negotiated down to small fraction of the amount owed, student loan payments may be reduced, IRS liens can be reduced or wiped out, car payments can be lowered or eliminated, and even attorneys’ fees are paid over time as part of the Chapter 13 plan. Perhaps the most beneficial part of a Chapter 13 plan is the ability to remove all second mortgages, lines of credit and other liens (including HOA liens) from your principal residence, and to significantly reduce principal balances on investment properties. In order to qualify, the debtor must be employed, or have a regular source of income, and the amount owed on the first mortgage of your principal residence must be greater than the market value of that home. As it relates to the debtor’s investment properties, under a Chapter 13 plan you are able to wipe out any second mortgages or credit lines, and reduce the principal balance of the first mortgage on each property to the current fair market value, payable at a low fixed interest rate, amortized over 10-15 years, through an affordable monthly payment. Once a debtor submits a Chapter 13 plan and begins to make payments, the lender cannot proceed with a foreclosure. A debtor can modify mortgages on their property through a unique program called the Mortgage Modification Mediation (MMM) program, even if the debtor has been previously declined for loan modification. If you owe more on your first mortgage than the fair market value of your home, have one or more additional mortgages, lines of credit or other liens on that property, and are currently employed, you may be a perfect candidate to file a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. If you also have investment properties which are upside down in value, and would like to keep them because they are generating rental income, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy is the ideal solution to resolve your mortgage crisis instead of wasting countless hours attempting to modify your loans directly with lenders. Contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule your free consultation with an attorney. ccording to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery operations in our country. Patients will often come to our office wanting their breasts to be fuller and are not certain which type of surgery is best for them. Is an implant necessary, or lift, or both? The technique used to enhance a woman’s breast should be individualized based on each woman’s personal appearance goals and unique anatomy. A common misconception is that breast implants make a woman’s breast stay up longer and not sag. This is not true. A breast implant adds volume or size to the breast. An implant can increase breast width, projection, and firmness, but doesn’t prevent the breast from sagging with time, especially if a woman doesn’t wear a bra. When a woman loses breast tissue volume or size as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, or through natural deficiency in breast development, then placing a breast implant beneath the glandular tissue or under the muscle (pectoralis) will enhance the appearance. When there is excess breast skin, such that the nipple and areolar position is now below the fold of the breast, then a breast lift or mastopexy is most likely necessary. This procedure involves removing the excess skin and tightening the remaining breast tissue to elevate or lift the nipple and areola and the breast itself. The type of mastopexy procedure utilized depends on the shape and the degree of sagging (or ptosis). There are three main types of breast lifts depending on where the incisions are placed on the breast. They are periareolar (Benelli, around the nipple only), circumvertical (lollipop, around the nipple and from the nipple to the fold), and inverted “T” (anchor incision, same as above, with an additional incision along the inframammary crease or fold). All are safe and effective techniques for lifting the breast depending on the degree of sagging. A breast augmentation and mastopexy can be safely performed at the same time, depending on the patient’s anatomy and individual history. An implant can improve the aesthetic appearance of the breasts when volume or size enhancement is necessary, in addition to skin tightening or lifting. In general terms, if a patient is an A or small B cup bra with sagging breast tissue, a breast lift and implant would be beneficial if the patient desires an increase in breast size or projection. When a patient’s breasts are a full C or D cut, then the breast lift alone may be sufficient depending on her individual breast appearance goals. As with facial rejuvenation and body contouring, there is no single breast enhancement procedure that is applicable to every patient. A thorough preoperative consultation and discussion of each woman’s individual appearance goals is essential to ensuring the proper surgery technique is performed. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Legally Speaking
Do you have a thoughtful and comprehensive estate plan which includes:
Talking About Death
S
ooner or later we all die. It will happen to me, and as upsetting as it may be to think about, it will happen to you, too. It’s a fact. We don’t know when or how death will occur. We hope the end comes peacefully when we are very old, surrounded by those we love, having lived a long and good life. No one lives forever. And although death is part of life, most people find the topic very difficult to think about and especially hard to discuss with others. Talking about what will happen to your family when you pass away can be a very emotional subject. And as with all emotionallycharged subjects, it is often easier to ignore. Or think about later. Is estate planning on your “to do” list? Perhaps you are superstitious. Can just talking about something make it more likely to happen? It is common for me to learn that new clients have taken months, often years, from the time they started thinking about estate planning to when they called our office to schedule a consultation. For many, life provides a burst of motivation encouraging you to take care of matters sooner rather than later. Perhaps a health scare, or a vacation overseas? It may also be seeing the aftermath of the sudden death of a friend or family member. Without proper planning, a grieving family is left to clean up the legal and financial mess left behind after the death of a loved one, during a very difficult time. So how do you prepare to face what may happen to your family after you are gone? Is it necessary to have a will, a durable power of attorney, or other estate planning documents? The best place to start is by educating yourself as to what estate planning is. There are many websites devoted to wills, trusts, and other documents that you can explore. Our website and blog also contain helpful information. By learning about the subject, it may be easier to discuss your needs. It won’t make you an expert, but when you consult an attorney you will be better prepared to formulate questions, which leads to the next step. Contact an estate planning attorney to arrange a consultation. Most estate planning attorneys do not charge for this initial meeting, and there is no obligation. Keep in mind that you need to feel comfortable and at ease with the attorney and office staff you select. Chemistry is important, as are qualifications. Find someone you trust. Remember not all attorneys specialize in estate planning. Ask questions. Do your research. Look for competence and shared values. Estate planning is a deliberate, premeditated act of love. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M. in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the area of estate planning and probate and trust administration for over 30 years. For more information, or to schedule a complimentary estate-planning consultation with Mr. Iden, please contact Iden Law Offices at (954)885-0085.

O
ften times, when an individual comes in to see me for an initial consultation they have pre-conceived notions about divorce law. This is most often true when dealing with minor children. The term “custody” is almost always brought up when discussing the minor children and their relationship with each of the parents. They are often surprised to learn that the term “custody” is no longer a term that is used in this state. Neither parent will be awarded “custody” of their minor child(ren). Instead, each parent’s rights and obligations will be contained in a document titled “Parenting Plan.” This is a multi-page form that contains all necessary information concerning the parents’ rights and responsibilities going forward. It is in essence a “default document,” which should be referenced if there is ever a dispute. Judges will generally tell the parents that it is their hope that this document will be put away in a drawer and only reviewed if necessary to resolve a conflict. A Parenting Plan must be filed when there are minor children involved. The provisions will either be agreed to by the parents or, if no agreement can be reached, it will be up to a judge to decide these issues. The Parenting Plan will establish the Court’s jurisdiction over the minor children. It will specify the type of parental responsibility that will be exercised by the parents. In most cases, the parents will have “shared parental responsibility,” which gives each equal decision making concerning significant issues in a child’s life. This does not include day-to-day decisions, which will be made by the parent who has the child(ren) on their particular day. In very limited circumstances, one parent may have sole parental responsibility and decision making. This occurs when one of the parents has exhibited behavior which proves that shared parental responsibility is not in a child’s best interests. The Parenting Plan will also state which parent’s address will be used for purposes of school registration. This can sometimes be a difficult issue to resolve, especially when the parents have equal time sharing. In some cases, the parents agree that the child(ren) will go to the best-rated school in either parent’s school boundary. Of course, the Parenting Plan will also state the time sharing schedule for each parent. This includes regular weekly time sharing, summer vacation, winter break, spring break and holiday time sharing. Some parents want every holiday listed and others may only want “major holidays,” such as Thanksgiving and New Year’s. Other issues that are contained within the Parenting Plan include travel outside of the state and outside of the United States, pick up and drop off responsibilities, extra-curricular activities for the child(ren) and financial contribution from each parent. The goal in each case to have the parents come to an agreement as to how to raise their child(ren) and memorialize it in this document. Judges would much prefer that the parents make these decisions and not the courts. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

D
evelopmental Flatfoot is one of the most common conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system of children and teenagers. There is a tendency for the child’s flatfoot to be ignored or treated with benign neglect. The facts are that it is NOT normal, the majority of children do NOT outgrow it, and there IS cause for some concern. Flatfeet are a genetic problem. Ligaments in the arch which connect the bones together are loose, allowing the arch to collapse. Congenital bone abnormalities as well as trauma to the tendons and ligaments in the inner arch can cause flattening of the arch and foot. A common cause of developmental flatfoot is tightness in the calf muscles, which aggravates the severe foot deformity. Symptoms include young children constantly preferring to be carried by a parent or be put in a stroller due to fatigue in their legs. Leg pain, especially at night and premature fatigue with activity, especially in young children or teenagers. Inner leg, ankle and foot pain with activity is common. It is occasionally associated with inner knee pain and lower back pain. Signs include lowering or complete collapse of the arch. The front part of the foot is turned out relative to the back part of the foot and the arch bulges towards the inside of the ankle. Knock-Knees is common which exasperates the deformity. The feet, ankles, and legs just do not appear right upon examination when the patient is standing. The child can be overweight and lacks athletic ability. General inactivity or avoidance of activity in children is common. Abnormal shoe wear as well as a child or teenager that does not run correctly occurs due to the deformity.
Treatment begins with a complete physical examination of the lower extremity and spine to find the underlying cause. This includes examining the child’s gait (walking pattern). Physical therapy will strengthen weak muscles and loosen tight muscles and help to improve overall coordination. Occasional immobilization of the extremity to loosen up tight muscles with a walking cast is necessary to decrease the deforming force of the calf muscle on the flatfoot. Custom molded shoe insoles (orthotics) to help permanently support the foot and put it in its proper position may be used. In most cases this will overnight correct fatigue and leg pain that the child experiences. It will also help to allow better performance in activities of daily living or sports. In some cases when conservative treatment fails, surgery can be done to help with the problem. The appropriate treatment plan can be a life-changing experience for the child. Prognosis is excellent, especially with timely management of the problem. Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. Pickup for Breast Cancer Is an Easy Way to Support the Cause
S
ince 1993 the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation has been committed to providing the resources necessary to fund programs that support their mission to end breast cancer. The household discard program, Pickups for Breast Cancer, is a great way for those who want to help by donating resalable items for a great cause.
This is a free, tax deductible home pickup service in South Florida including Martin, Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. All
types of household items including: clothing, clothing accessories, shoes, bric-a-brac, bedding, toys, electronics and resalable furniture, etc. are accepted. This program has proven to be successful since it has generated millions of dollars, which has funded numerous grants and programs, therefore helping their goal to end breast cancer. Michael Arena, Director of Merchandise Coordination, answered some commonly asked questions about the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation and its pick up service.
In one sentence, describe the key message of the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation. For the past
twenty two years, our mission is to end breast cancer through education, research and advocacy and it will be until a cure is found.
How does your pickup service work? We offer free, tax deductible home pickup services for household dis-
cards throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Martin counties. Those who want to donate can visit www.pickupsforbreastcancer.org and click on the “Schedule a Pickup” tab for easy and fast service. Scheduling a pick up is convenient online or by calling 1-888-492-4483.
What distinguishes you from your competition? Our pickup service is reli-
able, timely and friendly. The Florida Breast Cancer Foundation is a fully recognized 501(c) (3) charitable organization authorized by the IRS and United States Government to issue official tax deduction receipts for all donations.

T
here are many exciting events happening in the City of Pembroke Pines this month.
General Election Day
General Election Day is just one month away on November 8. Please note that the last day to register to vote is October 11 and that early voting will start on October 29. Pembroke Pines election precincts will be active on Election Day, so be sure to check your voter registration card for your precinct number. I encourage all residents to stay informed. In addition to office positions, this November’s ballot will also include two questions that both relate to a proposed one percent sales surtax. One of these is for funding countywide transportation projects, while the other is for city infrastructure improvement projects. Pembroke Pines wants you to be informed about projects that affect you involving the construction and improvement of public buildings, facilities and roads; transportation projects; pedestrian safety projects; purchase of equipment and public safety vehicles; and recreation/conservation land acquisition funded by levying a 30-year, 0.5% sales surtax, paid by residents and visitors, with all proceeds held in trust. For more information on these ballot questions, please visit www. APennyAtWork.com. For more information about general voting procedures, please visit the Broward County Supervisor of Elections website at http://www. browardsoe.org.

Pooches in Pines is a non-profit community group of dedicated volunteers in Pembroke Pines that helps unite dogs found by the Pembroke Pines Police with their owners. You won’t want to miss out on this spectacular red carpet event. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone there to show support for this worthy cause.
