Happy Holidays from Our Family to Yours
T
he South Florida community is a melting pot of diverse cultures, religions and backgrounds. This makes it the ideal place to learn about the many different holiday traditions our neighbors celebrate. At Our City Media, we feel blessed to work and live with such great and interesting people. The way our unique backgrounds have woven into a common community makes all our lives better. Just think of what we have available. On the same day, you can eat breakfast at a Bohemian bistro in Hollywood Beach, celebrate “Noche Buena” with Cuban co-workers and end the day by lighting candles on the menorah with friends. I can’t think of many other places where you could do that! I encourage you to get out and try something new, learn about someone else’s culture and don’t be afraid to share your own. So, Feliz Navidad! Happy Hanukkah! As-Salaam-Alaikum! Habari Gani! And, Merry Christmas! Best wishes and happy holidays from everyone at Our City Media.

Located in the Town Center, the lounge serves as a place where veterans can gather, share stories or sit quietly. Residents are welcome to peruse and learn more about the history of the military and the veterans living among them. The decor features uniforms and emblems from all branches of the United States Armed Forces, as well as personal photographs, books and military memorabilia, some of which are on loan from residents. “The Veterans Lounge honors our service men and women,” said resident and U.S. Navy veteran Vince Wilson during the ceremony. Referencing the glass case displaying military memorabilia and Purple Heart medals awarded to fellow residents who were injured during the Battle of the Bulge, he added, “As we honor our veterans today, we’re reminded that freedom is not free.” Wilson, along with Covenant Village of Florida Executive Director Doug Fennema, a U.S. Air Force veteran, and Director of Facilities Management Pete Wocial, a U.S. Merchant Marine veteran, participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Sunrise Fire-Rescue Launches New Awareness Campaign to Prevent Vehicular Heatstroke BY JILL SHARPE
S
unrise Fire-Rescue and the Broward County Office of Medical Examiner and Trauma Services recently announced a joint endeavor to educate the public about the dangers of leaving a child, vulnerable adult, or pet alone in a vehicle. Using funding from the Broward Regional EMS Council’s 2016 grant to “improve or expand prehospital EMS Systems”, the two agencies collaborated to create a new outreach campaign called LOVE – which stands for “Leave Our Vehicles Empty”. Heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash vehicle deaths for children. Already this year, 39 children in the US have died from vehicular hyperthermia, up 38 percent from the previous year. Florida ranks second in the nation for the number of children dying in hot cars each year. “These deaths are preventable,” said Sunrise Fire Chief Thomas DiBernardo. “The LOVE campaign aims to both alert parents and caregivers to the danger, and to teach them tactics to avoid it.” Whether due to a child being forgotten in the back seat, an unsupervised child gaining access into a car and becoming trapped, or a caregiver knowingly leaving a child behind in a vehicle, the clock is racing. The temperature inside the car can increase by 20°F within just the first 10 minutes, and by 50°F after an hour. Cracking the windows or parking in the shade does not reduce the speed or degree to which the car interior heats up. If trapped in a vehicle, South Florida’s average year-round temperature of 82°F which is well-within the deadly range. Kid’s bodies heat up 3-5 times faster than an adult’s. Similarly, our beloved pets cannot regulate core body temperature efficiently and will quickly overheat. The same can be true for elderly adults or those
with certain medical conditions. The risk of unintentionally leaving a loved one behind in the car increases when their caretakers are tired, stressed, or distracted. Those dealing with a change in routine - like new parents or a caretaker who’s not usually the one to watch the child - are especially susceptible to forgetting a dozing baby or toddler in the back seat. Parents and caretakers need to devise and use multiple preventative strategies such as: ▸▸ Never leave a child, vulnerable adult, or pet alone in a car - not even for a minute! ▸▸ Look before you lock. Always check the back seat before closing your car door. ▸▸ Use reminders: place a needed object in the back seat, and use a phone app or other alert device. ▸▸ Have a plan with your childcare provider for them to call you if your child does not arrive as expected. ▸▸ Call 911 immediately if you notice a child, vulnerable adult, or pet left alone in a car. ▸▸ Teach children not to play in cars. Lock car doors and the trunk and keep keys and remote fobs away from where kids can find them. More in-depth information and resources – including LOVE educational displays and materials for distribution - are now available on the program website, Broward.org/LOVE. Spence specializes in making organizations understand the potential to creating a diverse and inclusive workforce.. The event also included two panel discussions featuring employers who have supported hiring employees with disabilities, including representatives from Publix, McDonald’s, TD Bank and the National Disability Institute. Finally, several of ARC Broward’s Center for Financial Stability participants took part in a “Reverse Job Fair,” which allowed them to showcase their unique skills for employers who were hiring. One of the job seekers was Brad Williamson, a recent graduate of ARC Broward’s Culinary Arts Certificate. “I am truly grateful for the experience I received from ARC Broward’s 15-week Culinary Arts program. The caring instructor and hands-on learning were exceptional. It is my goal to find work as a prep chef in a professional kitchen, as a busboy or work in a retail grocery environment,” Williamson said. “There continues to be a strong movement across the United States for employers to hire individuals with disabilities, said Dennis Haas, ARC Broward President/CEO. “It is proven that Americans prefer to support businesses that promote a diverse workforce. ARC Broward is providing the support and services to j20 make our job seekers’ dreams become reality.”

embers of the legal and business community recently joined together to celebrate pro bono giving and access to justice at the 15th Annual For the Public Good fundraiser benefitting Legal Aid Service of Broward County (LAS) and Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida (CCLA) respectively. Members of the community were recognized for their efforts to secure justice and change lives for the underprivileged and underserved in Broward County. The event was held on October 27, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six. In an effort to bring attention to the vast legal needs of children in the dependency system, attorney Howard Talenfeld of Talenfeld Law challenged others in the community to match his commitment of $10,000. The contribution is earmarked as funding for the Tracey McPharlin Pro Bono Children’s Dependency Project. The partners at Kelley/Uustal joined Talenfeld with a matching commitment leading into the event. The evening became even more meaningful when Darran Blake, a guest of Howard and Julie Talenfeld, presented a matching donation of $10,000 on behalf of the Estate of Rosemary Duffy who recently passed away. Mrs. Duffy was the widow of JD Duffy, a lawyer and municipal judge from Columbus, Ohio. The Duffys moved to Fort Lauderdale in the 1970s and were very philanthropic, contributing to many charitable causes over the years in both Columbus and Fort Lauderdale. The annual fundraiser recognizes outstanding community advocates whose contributions have made it possible for LAS and CCLA to provide free civil legal services to Broward County children, families, veterans and senior citizens in the low income community. A few of the many legal services provided include helping veterans gain much needed benefits, abused children in foster care, the homeless, children in need of special education, victims of domestic violence and families losing their homes to foreclosure. Proceeds from the event
benefit children and families served by LAS and CCLA and enable both organizations to serve greater numbers of those in need. Fort Lauderdale attorney Juan Carlos Arias of Velasquez, Dolan, Arias Trial Lawyers, served as Master of Ceremonies. He brought a unique perspective to the event as many of the services provided by LAS and CCLA have long been near to his heart. Arias began his legal career as a Captain in the United States Army/Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAGC), then moved on to prosecute domestic violence cases, among others, with the State Attorney’s Office for the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit in Broward County. Arias currently serves on the Board of Directors for LAS and CCLA. Community advocates honored with special awards included: Stephen B. Moss, Esq., Partner, Holland & Knight, LLP, receiving the Russell E. Carlisle Advocacy Award; Stephen Ferrante, Managing Partner, Group Victory, receiving the Commitment to Justice Award; Farmer, Jaffe, Weissing, Edwards, Fistos & Lehrman, PL, receiving the Law Firm of the Year Award; Scott D. Owens, Esq., Scott D. Owens, PA, receiving the Spirit of Justice Award; Russell M. Thompson, Esq., Law Offices of Russell MillerThompson, receiving the Attorney of the Year Award; and Lorrie Schwartz, Legal Aid Service of Broward County, receiving the Jacquelyn and Bruce Rogow Employee of the Year Award. The end of the evening was lent to quietly but deservedly recognizing Tony Karrat for 40 years of leadership as Executive Director of Legal Aid Service of Broward County. Attorney Jesse Diner of Buchanan Ingersoll Rooney, a longtime friend, advocate and supporter of Legal Aid programs, offered a memorable and fitting tribute and shared with the crowd of 300 guests, “recognizing Karrat for his steadfast championing of the underprivileged and underserved of this community is long overdue.”

For over 40 years, Westside Regional Medical Center has been part of the Plantation community. As the population in the desired suburb grew, so did the hospital as it evolved into a 224-bed medical center and healthcare complex. The medical facility brings comprehensive healthcare and the latest technology to their patients which enables them to provide cutting edge services and procedures to the population they serve. Besides continuously expanding their services, the center recently received funds to expand the facility. HCA East Florida, a division of Hospital Corporation of America is embarking on a major capital investment initiative to invest approximately $650 million in healthcare facilities in Miami Dade,
Broward, Palm Beach, and St. Lucie. Westside Regional Medical Center was given $56 million to undergo an expansion which will include a 3-story tower and 72 private rooms so the hospital can better serve its patients. In addition, a new hospital will be built on the campus of Nova Southeastern University in Davie. This hospital is HCA’s single largest investment at $219
mid- 2018. During the construction process patients can expect little inconvenience as the front entrance will be closed, but the admitting entrance will serve as the main entrance during this time. The existing “hill” in front of the hospital will also disappear as this is where the 3-story tower will be built. The expansion will address the lack of private rooms which many patients
million. Construction should begin later this year. HCA East Florida already operates the Westside Davie ER, a freestanding emergency room facility on the NSU campus. The new construction at the Westside campus is scheduled to begin in early 2017 with a completion date
request. The addition of 72 private rooms will give these patients their much needed privacy while they are recovering and healing. Furthermore, more patients will be served and able to move more quickly from the Emergency Room to a room of their own.
“This is a very exciting time for Westside Regional Medical Center and our community,” said Barbara Simmons, RN, CEO, Westside Regional Medical Center. “Our hospital has continuously evolved and grown over the years, and this step in the evolution of Westside will meet patients’ needs plus add so much more value to the facility.” Westside Regional Medical Center’s services, combined with programs in specialties such as stroke and orthopedic, and varying from oncology to cardiology, and from surgery to emergency care are why they have been one of the leading healthcare facilities in South Florida since 1974.

Meals on Wheels South Florida Launches 14th Annual Holiday Gift Box Campaign BY JILL SHARPE
M
eals on Wheels South Florida is one of 5,000 Meals on Wheels programs across the country working every day to protect millions of seniors from the threats of isolation and hunger – an effort made possible by generous donors and volunteers who help in communities just like Broward County all across America. Each holiday season, Meals on Wheels’ aim is to ensure their clients enjoy the holidays as much as possible. In addition to the meals they are already receiving, Meals on Wheels staff and volunteers visit clients during the week of Christmas and present them with a gift wrapped box of personal care items. These boxes are delivered to 75-100 clients who are generally alone and without family to visit them during the holidays. Every year, assistance is requested from the community to donate personal care items, pack and decorate boxes, and deliver to the clients. Items being collected for the holiday gift boxes include shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste,
toothbrushes, lotion, detergent, washcloths and more. “Meals on Wheels South Florida is powered every day by staff and volunteers standing up to lend a caring hand to their aging neighbors,” said Jennifer M. Wescott, Community Relations Director for Meals on Wheels South Florida. “During the holidays we want our clients to remember that they are not alone and that we are here to provide them with more than a meal.” Members of the community can get involved with the Holiday Gift Box Campaign by donating personal care items or making financial gifts to help purchase items. Items are being received at the Meals on Wheels headquarters located at 451 N. State Road 7 in Plantation Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. until December 15th. Those wishing to donate or volunteer for this program can call 954.731.8770 or email volunteer@mowsoflo.org.

T
he GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club has a proud history of community involvement, scholarships, support for the police and fire departments and a wide range of projects that have set aside this club as a pillar of charitable giving. The club, which started in 1949 is the oldest civic organization in the City of Plantation. This October was a milestone for the women’s organization when funds were allocated for the long-awaited new community center that will take the place of the demolished Palm Tree Road center. The center, scheduled to open in 2017, will provide a wide range of recreational and educational facilities for Plantation residents. “This donation of $100,000 for the new community center represents the hard work and dedication of our members in continuing to make Plantation a fantastic city to live in,” said Club President Darlene Vlazny.

Student’s Scientific Breakthrough is Published in National Journal
SCHOOL NEWS
BY JILL SHARPE
20
M
axwell Gu is in 12th grade at American Heritage School, and he is published, as the first author, in an internationally reputable scientific journal by Nature Publishing Group, the publisher of Nature. His project was to design and synthesize a novel DNA molecule that can be used to identify new antibiotics to combat multidrug resistance bacteria in hospitals, an urgent health problem in the United States and the world. The new DNA molecule can also be used to discover new anticancer drugs targeting human topoisomerases. The research team headed by Prof. Fenfei Leng at Florida International University used a process called FRET, Fluorescent Resonance Energy Transfer, for the synthesis of the novel DNA molecule. The details of this scientific breakthrough are written in an article printed in “Scientific Reports” on Nature.com. “I always wanted to conduct high-level research in life sciences and make an impact on the global level,” Gu said. In the summer of 2015, Gu was one of a select group of students to participate in the Heritage Science Research Institute. Headed by Leya Joykutty, the Research Institute is a 10-week summer program where students work every day to develop and execute scientific research projects. They utilize Heritage’s investigative science lab facilitated by Joykutty and her team. That summer, Gu also secured an internship with Prof. Leng at Florida International University. “Professor Leng was my research mentor who helped me work on the antibiotic resistance project, and Mrs. Joykutty helped keep me organized and on schedule with the follow through,” said Gu.
DECEMBER 2016 | OUR CITY PLANTATION
“We tested some antibiotics to prove its validity, but I would like to include a wider variety of antibiotics and more trials to get stronger results,” Gu said. “The faster we develop antibiotics, the more patients we can save.” “The DNA molecule that we designed and synthesized is a real breakthrough for the field of DNA topology and topoiosmerases,” said Prof. Leng. “Now we are able to screen a million small molecule compounds and identify new antibiotics and anticancer drugs for our patients. Gu is an outstanding high school student and worked very hard during the summer of 2015. I hope that his success in my laboratory will encourage him to pursue a medical or/ and biomedical career in the future.” Gu is also involved with Mu Alpha Theta honors math society and the Science Bowl at school. Surprisingly enough, he wants to study political science and history in college because he says he likes to analyze events deeper than their surface.” “In political science you see one event through many different lenses, and it’s the same as research,” Gu said. “One individual cannot develop anything on his or her own. It takes a team– a collaborative effort–it takes more than one person’s mind to achieve something great.” A spinoff of Gu’s research could actually serve as a quicker way to find new anti-cancer drugs. The possibilities are endless for this bright, motivated student. His article can also be found in PubMed.com, which is a search engine for references, articles, and abstracts relating to the life sciences. It’s an international research platform, and Gu’s FRET method will stay on there forever.

Sushiato

Winter Safety
H
ere in Florida we often think of the hot summer months as the most risky; heat emergencies, sunburn, and backyard drownings are all realities of living in the subtropics. However, here are a few safety tips to help make the cooler months more enjoyable as well. Of course December brings the holidays with all the festivities and decorations. Candles are one of the leading causes of home fires. Open flames should not be used in the home. Consider electronic candles. They look just as nice and pose no risk. If you do use real candles please remember, “When you go out, blow out.” The holidays also bring lots of lights. We have a tendency to overload electrical circuits. Check all lighting decorations to be sure there are no broken or frayed wires. Only use multi-plug devices with an appropriate circuit breaker and do not run extension cords under carpets or where they cause a trip hazard. And turn them off when you go to bed. Holiday trees give the home a warm, festive feel. Remember to keep the tree in water. When the needles start to fall, it’s time to remove it from the home. And never put real candles on a holiday tree. Nothing warms a home like a family dinner. Keep in mind, kitchen fires are the leading cause of home fires. Be sure ovens and stoves are turned off. Should a fire begin in a pan, on the stove, do not put water on it. Simply cover it with a lid or sprinkle baking soda on it. You’ll look like a hero and dinner won’t be ruined. Also, keep a fire extinguisher handy. And for those few days when the temperature dips all the way down (at least by our standards) if you are considering space heaters, keep them away from drapes, furniture or any other combustible material. Ensure the space heater is U/L rated and has an automatic shutoff should it get knocked over. If you are using a propane (LP Gas) heater, remember it should be kept outside, away from open windows as it produces Carbon Monoxide, a deadly, odorless gas. Everyone enjoys celebrating New Year’s Eve. Please remember, firing guns into the air is no way to celebrate. Each year people are seriously injured or killed by stray bullets being fired into the air. At the Plantation Fire Department, we want everyone to be safe. Taking a few simple steps, can ensure an enjoyable and memorable holiday season for you and your family. Happy Holidays!

Plantation Fire Department Selects Member of the Year BY JILL SHARPE
to step into the Pub Ed coordinator’s role. Being only a few weeks before Fire Prevention month she found herself immediately overwhelmed. But she persevered and helped initiate new procedures to streamline the Pub Ed request process. Since taking over the coordinator’s position Murphins has scheduled and attended more than 50 hours in Pub Ed programs, coordinated the City-Wide Fire Prevention Poster & Essay Contest and all this while balancing a full-time job, new motherhood, and volunteer firefighter duties. While many people might feel exhausted just hearing what Mruphins does she says, “I love it. I want to do more.” Murphins was honored during the Chamber of Commerce Breakfast on Wednesday, October 19th, at the Jacaranda Country Club and again that evening at the City Council meeting.

uggling work, family, and life in general is a challenge for most working mothers. Add to that being a volunteer firefighter and the Plantation Fire Department’s Public Education coordinator, and you have Kaitlin Murphins. Murphins joined the Fire Department in January of 2011. Even while going through basic training she fell in love with Pub Ed. Kaitlin began working with Pub Ed by dressing up as Sparky and Big Bob, the blowup firefighter. She attended parades and special events in costume. And while the costumes were often hot and uncomfortable, especially in the summer, she found great joy in the smiles on the kid’s faces. “That is so rewarding,” said Murphins. “To see them smile when they see the fire trucks, or when they repeat the fire safety information makes it all worthwhile.” Most recently, due to staffing changes Murphins was asked

Fire Prevention Contest Marks Four Decades BY JILL SHARPE
As part of their Fire Prevention month activities the Plantation Fire Department honored the Citywide winners of their 40th Annual Fire Prevention Poster and Essay Contest at the Plantation Chamber of Commerce breakfast, at the Jacaranda Country Club on October 19th, then again at the City Council meeting, that evening at City Hall. The Poster and Essay contest has been part of the Plantation Fire Department and the Plantation Volunteer Fire Association’s fire prevention activities since 1976. This year’s fire prevention theme “Don’t Wait, check the Date,” reminds everyone that smoke detectors should be checked monthly and the detectors replaced every 10 years. The goal of the program, is to encourage school-aged children to help firefighters keep communities safer by preventing and preparing for fire emergencies. “Fire safety is truly a team effort,” said Fire Chief Laney Stearns. “The impact children have on their parents and families when bringing home the fire safety message is our strongest tool. Education is one of our most powerful weapons against fire and Fire Prevention Week is the perfect tie-in for our annual competition.” Final submissions were judged by the Friends of the Helen B. Hoffman Library and the Plantation Art Guild. Winners were named in various categories including “City-Wide” and “Best in School.” The winners of the contest were as follows:
City-Wide Essay Winners: 1st Place – Rajesh Singh – Mirror Lake Elementary, 5th 2nd Place – Kyra Cisneros – Peters Elementary, 5th 3rd Place – Avital Ohayon – Central Park Elementary, 4th
City-Wide Poster Winners: 1st Place – Karina Fernandez – American Heritage, 3rd 2nd Place – Brianna Howard – Central Park Elementary, 2nd 3rd Place – Ried Ricketts – Mirror Lake Elementary, 2nd
Karina Fernandez, a third grader from American Heritage, submitted the City-wide, winning poster in the Plantation Fire Department Poster & Essay Contest. Her interpretation of the NFPA theme “Don’t Wait, check the Date,” was selected among several dozen entries across the City.

Dallas is an almost seven-month-old yellow Lab. His favorite people are his sisters who are nine and six-years-old. They give him a lot of love. His sisters named him Dallas because their dad likes the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas loves the water, particularly muddy water. He also loves to going boating and going to the Bark Park in Plantation. His favorite toy is everyone’s shoes. He was last seen on the couch snoozing or following his sisters around.
