Happy Valentine’s Day!
I
t ’ s hard to believe it ’ s February already. It
seems like just yesterday we were ushering in 2015. If you’re like most of us, the New Year’s resolution is already broken. The kids are back into their school and sports routines and we are back to work, but daydreaming of summer vacation. It’s also the time to make plans for a romantic evening with your special someone this Valentine’s Day. While we contemplate which gift to purchase, we need to remember that the monetary value of a gift is a secondary notion. The most important point is that the gift comes from the heart and there is no better gift than spending valuable time with the ones we love.

Plantation Firefighters Create a Special Welcome for Wish Child BY JILL SHARPE
P
lantation firefighters have great
big hearts and they proved it once again recently as they helped make a special day even more special for a little boy who flew to South Florida from California to meet his favorite performer at the Y-100 Jingle Bell concert. Plantation firefighters teamed up with Renaissance Hotel employees to make the little boy, named Barry, and his family right at home. Barry received a real Plantation fire department helmet, he got to wear a real firefighter’s uniform and along with his brother and sister, was treated to a ride on the fire truck. Firefighters also gave Barry and his brother and sister souvenir Fire Department hats and t-shirts. Plantation Fire Chief Laney Stearns said MakeA-Wish is an important program and the firefighters are honored to be a part of it. “We are glad to have brought some happiness to Barry and his family. They have certainly brought inspiration to us,” Chief Stearns said. The is not the first time the Plantation Department has partnered with Make-A-Wish. In July, the department hosted Mount Horeb volunteer firefighter Chris Rupp, who rode his bike crosscountry from Seattle to Plantation in an effort to raise money for Make-A-Wish.

Plantation Junior Woman’s Club Gears Up for Seventh Annual Festival of the Treasures Event BY JILL SHARPE
O
ne of Plantation ’ s most
beloved spring festivals will return once again this year to Volunteer Park. Hosted by the Plantation Junior Woman’s Club (PJWC), the festival will take place Saturday and Sunday March 7th and 8th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature art, handcrafts, collectibles and handmade jewelry. The event is a fundraiser for beautification projects in the City of Plantation. Past beautification projects have consisted of tree plantings at Liberty Tree Park and The Plantation Arboretum along with annual tree plantings at each of the Plantation Elementary and Middle Schools where tree seedlings are given to each student who participates in the tree planting for Arbor Day. The PJWC is currently working on plans to expand Butterfly Gardens to interested Plantation Elementary and Middle Schools . PJWC also sponsored the installation of a mosaic tree from medallion at Plantation Woods, planted a tree and donated a bronze plaque to honor Jeffrey Siegel in Liberty Tree Park, updated landscaping at Volunteer Park and the Veltri Tennis Center at Central Park and continues to underwrite special landscaping projects for the City of Plantation
According to club publicist Danielle Durham, the initial purpose of the Festival was to serve as an opportunity for hobbyists and crafters to show and sell their handmade items. “The event keeps growing though with many local crafters returning each year and is now a two-day event with 40 crafters inside the building and additional crafters in tents outside on the winding walking path,” Durham said. A returning edition to this year’s Festival will be the Kid’s Zone featuring free family fun with lots of surprises. Food trucks will be providing upgraded food and beverage choices and there will be tables inside and outside for dining. Admission and parking for the event is free. Volunteer Park is the home of Camp Everglades, an extensive interactive playground, and the Plantation Equestrian Center. The Plantation Farmer’s Market will also be on site Saturday, March 1 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. There are a few spaces for Inside Crafters and Hobbyists still available. Outside Crafters and Hobbyists must provide their own tents. Interested crafters and hobbyists can obtain an application by calling the PJWC hotline 954797-9762, via email at PJWCFestival@aol.com or at wwwpjwcfl.org. Inside Spaces are $125 per weekend and outside spaces are $45 per day or $75 for the entire weekend.

Skills To Go Program Receives Grant from AT&T BY JILL SHARPE
Larry Rein, ChildNet Palm Beach County; Denise Caruso, AT&T; Pat Caruso, AT&T; Elizabeth Wynter, R.B. Williams, ChildNet; Gloria Pazel, AT&T; Sarah Herceg, AT&T; Bill Pazel, AT&T; Louise Zehnder, AT&T.
A
s part of its education commitment to help youth and young
adults get ready for careers and college, the local chapter of AT&T Pioneers recently presented ChildNet with a $5,000 grant for its Skills To Go Program. The Skills to Go program introduces youth in foster care to career opportunities in technology and telecommunications. Teens and young adults, ages 15 to 18, participate in AT&T interactive, customized life skills classes with telecommunications and technology experts and executives. They then visit an AT&T site
where they learn about educational and employment opportunities. The young people meet with current and retired AT&T executives, staff and volunteers and even have the opportunity to participate in mock interviews. Last year, 15 young adults in Broward County and 15 in Palm Beach County, participated in the Skills To Go Program and field trip. “The positive feedback and results were undeniable,” said Elizabeth Wynter, director of community relations for ChildNet. “This program allows our community’s most vulnerable youth the opportunity to dream about educational and employment opportunities that will now be more within their realm of possibility. All they need is the help and support of organizations, like
AT&T Pioneers, that believe in them.” ATT Pioneers is the world’s largest group of industry-specific employees and retirees dedicated to community service. Pioneers volunteer more than 15 million hours annually responding to the individual needs of their communities. ChildNet is the single non-profit entity responsible for administration of the local child welfare system. The organization brings years of dedication to protecting abused, abandoned and neglected children. For more information about ChildNet, visit www.ChildNet.us or call 954-414-6001.

Why TAG USA Gymnastics Is The Best
T
AG USA Gymnastics has a rich 45 year history as the original gymnastics center in Ft. Lauderdale. Since
2009, owners Marissa and Michael Zoldan have made TAG USA the most successful gym in the region. In 2014, TAG USA pro-
Owner Marissa Zoldan: “Families must have options.” As a progressive gym, we want an athlete to advance quickly according to her/his abilities. At TAG USA, parents can place their children in a variety of training paths that best suit the child’s needs and long-term goals. We offer recreational classes, pre-teams, Shooting Stars (4 year olds), and Level 1 (5 year olds) non-competitive paths. Instead of progressing on a traditional level by level track, competitive gymnasts can advance quickly through our Fast Track Program or by enrolling in our Two-a-Day Training Program.
Head Compulsory Coaches Leesa and Arno van Werven: “Our coaches pay attention to details.”
We train for success by seriously conditioning our athletes, safely reinforcing skills, and, most importantly, paying close attention to the gymnasts’ form. This season, we have already won the State Championship in Level 2 and 3 Girls Gymnastics and over the last four years TAG USA has won eight Team State Championships. Obviously, our methods work very well, especially when we compete against other local gyms and win.

duced four National Champions and won over 40 Individual State Championships and two Team State Championships.
Owner Mike Zoldan: “We invest in our gymnasts’ needs.” TAG USA is different than every other gym. We are the largest gym around and offer the most equipment, which allows for continuous training without having to wait in line. We hire the best and most experienced coaches who follow our detailed lesson plans. Our large coaching staff provides gymnasts with one-on-one attention. Beyond that, Marissa and I closely monitor our athletes’ progress and are in constant communication with the parents. We invest in our athletes and it pays off with children enrolled in our recreational classes learning the skills needed to advance and our team athletes winning championships.
Fast Track & Optionals Head Coach Alicia Sacramone (left) with Asst. Coach Kristina Comforte: “I set reasonably high expectations.” Being an Olympian, I coach our athletes to set high standards for themselves and work hard to attain them. Athletes who want a more intensive training program can join our Fast Track group which may help them safely progress through levels 3 to 6 in a quicker manner. For the more serious athlete, our Two-a-Day Training program offers a regimented workout experience similar to how I trained as a young gymnast.

Arthritis in the Foot and Ankle By Dr. Robert Sheinberg, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.
A
ccording to the Centers for D isease Control ,
an estimated 52.5 million American adults suffer from some form of arthritis. As our nation’s population ages, the prevalence is expected to increase. Here are the answers to commonly asked questions about arthritis in the foot and ankle: 1. What is arthritis? Arthritis is a degenerative process that may take place in any joint in the body. Cartilage which allows the joint to move smoothly starts to wear down. Bone spurring and bone cysts may occur as the joint wears abnormally. The joint starts to move out of its normal position creating pain with movement. A loss of joint movement also follows the arthritic process. 2. What causes arthritis? Most often arthritis is caused from an injury to the joint. The injury may occur as a child and it may manifest itself later in life. A bad injury to a bone or joint (fracture) may start the development of arthritis almost immediately after the injury. Arthritis is very common when a bone fractures into the joint. Malpositioning of the joint will cause abnormal wear and tear. It may also be seen in people who are excessively flatfooted, knock-kneed or bowlegged. It is also very common in people with bunions. 3. Will the arthritis get worse over time? In almost all cases arthritis in any joint will worsen. The joint will wear abnormally causing pain, limited motion of the joint, bone spurring and swelling around the joint. The joint will become excessively stiff causing pain with many activities. Difficulty with certain shoes may also be present. 4. Will medication help to lessen the pain and joint deformity? Oral medication will help to diminish some discomfort, but it will not change the degenerative process, which takes place slowly over time. 5. Will physical therapy be of any benefit? Physical therapy will help retain some movement in the joint and keep swelling to a minimum. It may also help to improve muscle strength. Over the long term it will be of limited benefit as the degenerative process will continue to take place. 6. Can surgery be of benefit if the arthritis is found early? Many procedures can be performed to assist in treating the degenerative process if found early. After a thorough history and physical examination x-rays are taken to assess the degree of joint damage. Occasionally if the damage is mild an arthroscopic or small open procedure may be necessary to remove abnormal bone and soft tissue. Cartilage that is lifted away from the bone is removed to allow the joint to function more normally. If a joint is out of position removing bone spurs and soft tissue may be of limited benefit. In this case the bones may need to be repositioned to allow more normal joint alignment. 7. Can anything be done if the arthritis is severe? In some cases the arthritis is severe and joint replacement or joint fusions may be necessary. Joint replacements are an excellent option and may be necessary in older, more sedentary patients. Fusing the joint that is arthritic and not allowing it to move any longer is also an excellent approach to the treatment of arthritis. This eliminates any painful movement allowing a return to work and activities of daily living with minimal modifications. Some joints can be fused and still allow an athlete to resume professional sports 8. Will orthotics be of any benefit? Orthotics will assist in maintaining normal joint position. Support of the foot and placement of the foot in better anatomical position may redistribute stress more evenly in the foot and ankle region. This may help to lessen pain and possibly delay the need for surgery. They provide great benefits in people with big toe joint (turf toe, bunions) problems. Orthotics are also very useful in patients who are flatfooted, knock-kneed, bowlegged and in those with lower back pain. Robert Sheinberg, DPM, is a Board Certified Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Fellow American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, Diplomat American Board of Podiatric Surgery. Make a New Year’s Resolution to Smile About!
WIN!! WIN!! WIN!! Enter for FREE!!
By Dr. Michael Maruri
T
his Year , Make a N ew Year ’ s R esolution to
smile about! We’ve all heard the expression: New Year, new me! This year, instead of making goals to get in shape or start eating right, make a goal that will last you a lifetime - the goal of a beautiful new smile! Dr. Michael Maruri at Clear Orthodontic Solutions can make that dream a reality in 2015! Along with traditional braces, Clear Orthodontic Solutions is on the pulse of orthodontic technology. We offer a variety of new services that will dramatically improve the look of your teeth, often with less time and pain than traditional methods. Dr. Michael Maruri also offers Invisalign and Invisalign Teen, Ceramic (clear) Braces, and Lingual Braces. Invisalign and Invisalign Teen treatment offers clear aligners that are virtually invisible. Like ghosts working on your teeth, you can’t see them, but you know they’re there once things start moving! The aligners are removable, easy to clean, and allow you to eat whatever you want. For patients in need of more traditional braces, clear (ceramic) brackets are an amazing alternative. Clear brackets on the teeth are hardly noticeable and very versatile. Not only does orthodontic treatment give you a beautiful smile, it can also benefit your dental and general health. If teeth are poorly aligned, removing plaque and tartar by brushing and flossing may be difficult. A bad bite may result in fractured or excessively worn tooth surfaces, and the extra stress caused by a bad bite may even result in problems with your jaw joints. Straight teeth are less prone to decay and injury. Decay results when the bacteria in plaque feed on carbohydrates (sugar and starch) we eat or drink to produce acids that can cause cavities. Plaque can also increase the risk for periodontal (gum) disease. According to the Journal of Dental Research, harmful bacteria below the gum surface of crowded teeth invade the gingival tissue, harm connective tissue and cause inflammation. Straightening your teeth can make a significant difference in having a healthy heart and lower risk of diabetes. As for injuries to teeth, protruding upper teeth are more likely to be broken in an accident. An attractive smile is a wonderful asset. It contributes to self-esteem, selfconfidence and self-image – important qualities at every age. So now that the New Year has arrived, make sure your new smile follows close behind. We look forward to facilitating your transformation in 2015!

such as Botox, Dysport and Xeomin and dermal fillers such as Sculptra, Juvederm, Voluma, Restylane, Perlane, Belotero & Radiesse. We also offer skin rejuvenation procedures such as eMatrix, SkinPen MicroNeedling, Medical Facials, Chemical Peels and Hydra Facials. Additionally, we offer laser hair removal for dark and light skin, laser tattoo removal; face, neck and decollate skin tightening solutions with Ultherapy; fat reduction with LipoSonix; and body contouring and cellulite reduction with Viora Reaction.
experience of our staff and our reputation, it would have to be the extensive range of the advanced technologies that we own (laser, radio frequency, micro needling, ultrasound etc.) A good example is our Naturalase Tattoo Laser. It is the most powerful tattoo removal laser on the market (and only one in South Florida) that allows the patient a shorter treatment time and fewer visits to completely remove their tattoo. Other examples are Ultherapy and Reaction, two of the leaders in face and body skin tightening that we own. Both are great examples of new technology translating to younger looking skin.
What are the latest trends in your business? Because of advancements in technology such as Ultheraphy and new dermal fillers such
What is special about your staff? The many
years of aesthetic experience our medical practitioners have is unique in this business. Our medical providers are not only experts in the Medical Aesthetic space with an average 14 years experience, many are also “outside trainers” to other medical practitioners in the aesthetic industry. Even our front desk team are skin experts with many of them being aestheticians. A good example of this is Lisa Matire, Laser/Skincare Specialist - CME, CCE. Lisa educates and certifies Laser Technicians seeing laser hair removal certification in South Florida. Erin Owoc, ARNP

as Voluma, patients are able to get very close to surgical face lift results without having surgery. These non-invasive procedures are only going to get more advanced in the future and knowing that many patients that do not desire (or have the time) to handle the downtime of having surgery will continue to fuel the growth of these offerings.
What do you offer that is new in the field? Reaction by Viora,
Ultherapy and LipoSonix are the latest technologies we have acquired this year. Reaction is a painless procedure to tighten the skin on your body and reduce cellulite. It takes multiple sessions but the results are very impressive. Ultherapy is a game changer when it comes to a skin tighten technology to lift your face and neck with only one treatment using focused ultrasound. LipoSonix allows our patients to lose 1 inch off their waste (abdomen or flanks) in 1 hour and only requires 1 treatment. Ageless Medical is located at 10640 Griffin Road, Suite 102 in Cooper City. Family Owned and Operated Floor Solutions Group Offers Customers Knowledgeable Service, Top of the Line Flooring, and Installation By Jill Sharpe
I
How many members of the family work in the business?
f you are in the market for
new flooring but need some help deciding what the best options are, look no further than Floor Solutions Group. Sales Manager Carlos Almandoz has more than 15 years experience in remodeling with an expertise in flooring installation and bathroom renovations. He knows what works well and what doesn’t work. As a retired flooring renovation specialist, Almandoz has joined with six family members, including his daughter Carla, to bring the best flooring options to you. Carla recently answered some questions about the family business.
Currently there are seven family members working at Floor Solutions Group.
What can customers expect when they visit your store? We
How long have you been in business and how did you get started? Our office and
showroom have been open since January 2014. One day my cousin, Jose, decided to tell my father, Carlos, that his years of professional installation experience were valuable and worthy of something more. He then went on to convince my father, his uncle, that it was the time in his career to open up a flooring materials store. At the time, Jose was finishing up his Masters at NSU and as his career was in Business Administration he knew that we had a lot to offer to this industry and its customers. As the idea grew, more and more customers and friends convinced my father that opening up a store was a great idea. It was also perfect timing for me too, as I was just about to graduate from Florida State with a degree in Marketing. We knew it was the perfect opportunity and time to get this business rolling for our family.
ers whose workmanship, honesty, and skill are amongst the best we have yet to see. We have had so many customers come to us with terrible stories of their past installers. It's quite sad how many in this business take advantage of their clients. We are not happy until you walk away 100% satisfied with the materials and job we have performed. If you ever have a problem, we will respond at any time of the day, any day. For that reason, we use flooring materials that will make your home, office, or commercial store a true masterpiece.
What differentiates Floor Solutions Group from other flooring stores? Because my
father, Carlos, has been in the business for quite some time now, he knew exactly what materials to use and which ones to stay away from. Here at Floor Solutions we pride ourselves in our high quality materials as we want all of our customers to have the very best the industry has to offer. We also have a team of subcontracted install-

are a family owned and operated business. The service that we give to our clients is that of a family friend or relative. Our showroom is small compared to other flooring materials stores but we designed it that way because we wanted a more personalized, cozy feeling when you walked into our showroom. We also understood the pains of going into a flooring store and seeing so many options. It can truly drive a homeowner crazy. For many homeowners choosing the right materials for their home is crucial. We wanted to make that experience feel like it should, personable and important. Come sit down, drink some coffee, and have a chat with us on what it is that your family needs. You will be surprised to know that you will walk in a customer and leave a friend. That is our goal.
hardwood issues. With porcelain tiles you don’t have to worry about your wood absorbing moisture and expanding and you can still have that cozy warm feel that is given by natural wood and laminates.
Anything else you would like readers to know? Please ask
us for referrals. We have many happy clients who would love to show you the materials and work that has been done in their homes, offices, or commercial stores.
What services do you provide?
Personalized consultations, free at home estimates, and installation services. We also guide our customers who wish to install their own laminate floors through the process and will answer any question or concern at any time regardless of our business hours.
How have flooring options changed over the years? Over
the past few years we have seen hardwood turn to laminate floors and ceramic into porcelain tile, 12" x 12" tiles into 6" x 36" tiles, and traditional styles into modern designs. Right now the bigger the better. Flooring has moved away from the square look to an elongated rectangular look that is more sleek and modern. Customers in Florida are also very fond of the laminate flooring as it is more affordable and less tedious than hardwood. Lately, 6" x 36" porcelain tiles have become the popular choice for those looking for the wood touch without the
Where is Floor Solutions Group located? Our address is 10400 W. State Road 84, Suite 103, in Davie. We are located right off of Nob Hill and 84. The commerce park we are currently located in is behind Dragados USA. Many people get confused as Maps only sends you to the first building, but we promise that if you continue down that road you will find us.
How can customers reach Floor Solutions Group? You can
reach us by calling 954-708-5892 or emailing us at carla@fsgflorida. com or Jose@fsgflorida.com. We are always open to catering to your appointment needs. Whether that be on the weekends or after 5 p.m., if you call us ahead, we will definitely take care of you. Our website is www.fsgflorida.com.
