Spring Has Arrived
S
pring is traditionally the welcome sign of
renewal and progress all around the world. For our neighbors to the north, it means the end (hopefully) of another brutal winter packed with powerful blizzards that blanketed much of the midwest and northeast. Even as I am writing this editorial, the Boston area is still digging out from another snow-loaded blizzard, and not the kind you get at Dairy Queen. Here in South Florida, we’re fortunate to live the perpetual “Spring Break.” People from all over the country, and world, flock to Florida to take refuge from the cold and enjoy our mild temperatures, calming sea breezes and white sandy beaches. But, you don’t need to be a snowbird or tourist to enjoy all that Florida has to offer. With Spring Break later this month, why not spend some time enjoying the many splendors of the Sunshine State? Where else can you see endangered manatees, pre-historic alligators and pretty pink flamingos all in the same day? Where else can you relax and sunbathe during the day and then dance the night away on South Beach? Where else can you go flats fishing on a secluded sand bar and then pull up for a delicious bite to eat at one of the many restaurants along the Intracoastal Waterway? Only here in South Florida. On this happy note, let’s take some time to enjoy all that Florida has to offer and have some FUN! Sincerely, Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Inspiring Individual
Teacher Honored For Mentoring Tomorrow’s Leaders at Plantation High BY JILL SHARPE
P
lantation H igh School has steadily
increased its graduation rate in the past few years thanks to the efforts of Frances Safaite-Frederic, who leads a program at the school called Mentoring Tomorrow’s Leaders (MTL). The program, which Safaite-Frederic was chosen to spearhead, has improved the graduation rate from a low of under 75 percent in the 2008-2009 school year to 89 percent in 2013-2014. MTL was started with grant money received five years ago when Plantation High School was identified as one of two schools in Broward County that had a higher drop-out rate than the State. The MTL program has proven to be so successful that now six other high schools in Broward have adopted it,” said Safaite-Frederic. MTL is, by definition, a peer mentoring, dropout prevention, educational re-engagement and student leadership program. The program is based on five pillars: Academic Achievement, Mentoring, Family Involvement, Community Support and Incentives. “We make sure students strive for excellence, encourage a college-going culture and provide opportunities for them to succeed,” Safaite-Frederic said. “This encouragement includes everything from talking to students about any challenges they might have and coming up with resources for them, to providing assistance with homework twice a week after school.” Students in the program also experience a tristate college tour and are exposed to scholarship opportunities throughout the year.
Safaite-Frederic said on average 60-70 students take advantage of the after school homework help. High achieving students at Plantation High serve as mentors and are the ones who help with the homework. “We have about 100 mentees on our roster,” Safaite-Frederic said. “Our goal is to match mentors and mentees.” Recently, one of the student mentor scholars nominated Safeaite-Frederic for a special award given out by the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). Nephtalie Felix, who nominated Safeaite-Frederic for her outstanding dedication and commitment to excellence in the classroom, was thrilled when the nomination resulted in Safeaite-Frederic being named Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction. Felix, a senior student scholar at Plantation High, said Safaite-Frederic is the greatest mentor ever. “She is always available to her students, not only as a teacher, a graduation coach and a mentor, but also as a friend,” said Felix. As the funding for this program will expire at the end of this school year, Safaite-Frederic said her goal this year is to provide as many MTL Seniors as possible with a scholarship to attend college. “We are seeking sponsorships for our scholarship banquet on May 14th,” she said. Anyone interested in providing sponsorships is encouraged to contact Latrell Carr, MTL Program Manager at latrel.carr@browardschools.com or at 754-321-1561.

Roof-A-Cide Provides The Cure for Unsightly Roof Stains BY JILL SHARPE
A
re you confused about all the
options available to keep your roof clean? Are you worried that harsh chemicals and repeated cleaning of your roof is causing roof damage? Many local homeowners face these concern as mold and mildew can create an eyesore and choosing the wrong cleaning method can precipitate an expensive, premature roof replacement. So, how do you know who to call and which method to choose when it’s clearly time to address your dirty roof situation?
that will result in costly repairs and shorten the lifespan of the roof.
How does Roof-A-Cide prolong the life of your roof? It’s a simple
fact. The less that a roof is walked on or harshly cleaned, the greater its durability will be. By eliminating the need for repeated pressure clearing or harsh chemicals, concrete tiles are much less likely to shift or break and asphalt shingles will not become as brittle or prone to cracking
Most Floridians replace their roof due to unnecessary wear and tear years before the normal life span of 25 to 30 years and it is often not an expense that people are unready to face, let alone prematurely. Owning a home is the most important and expensive investment that many South Floridians will ever make. That being said, the structural integrity of its roof is paramount to protecting the value of the home itself. With the Roof-A-Cide method, this integrity is not only maintained, it’s actually lengthened.
The professionals at Roof Treatment Inc., are one of the elite few that utilize Roof-A-Cide, the only EPA approved algaecide/fungicide on the market. This highly effective chemical is the safest, most cost effective solution to the problem of roof stains. In addition to being safe for people, pets and plants, it is safe for roofs, saves wear and tear, provides long-lasting results and is approved by every major roof manufacturer to actually prevent roof stains for years with each treatment. The treatment is so effective that the company actually provides a two year warranty.
How does Roof-A-Cide impact your landscaping and the environment? Roof-A-Cide will not
Roof Treatment Inc. owners Christina and her brother Frank Miele recently answered some questions about the way the Roof-A-Cide system works, how it compares to other roof cleaning methods and why it simply is the best way for local homeowners to protect their roofs.
Why do you refer to Roof-ACide as a “cure,” especially when compared to chlorine bleach and conventional pressure cleaning? Both chlorine and
Roof-A-Cide are initially effective at removing impurities from a roof. However, Roof-A-Cide will actually get rid of all the mold and algae for two years, guaranteed. Chlorine will only remain effective for 6-12 months, at best. Even more disheartening, chlorine actually leaves behind a salt residue that serves as a fertilizer and accelerates the growth of more mold. On the other hand, Roof-A-Cide is considered a “cure” because it requires minimal maintenance once the initial treatment is completed, whereas chlorine will necessitate repeated cleaning and roof abuse

Roof-A-Cide program they will truly never have to clean their roof again.
Frank Miele and Christina Miele
What exactly does Roof Treatment Inc. do to clean and protect a roof? On most roofs,
our professionals will begin with a product called “Roof Restore”. This specially formulated detergent is sprayed on and then carefully washed away using a low pressure hose. Then a trained technician will apply the Roof-A-Cide product, which guards the roof against mold guaranteed for two years. If the homeowner sticks with the

damage the grass or landscaping around your home, and the amount of water used is only 30 gallons which is equivalent to a five minute shower. Compare that to the 1,800 gallons of water needed to pressure clean the average 3,000 square foot roof, which has to be cleaned at least once a year to achieve the same results. When you add those statistics to the EPA registration, the use of a naturally occurring antimicrobials as an active ingredient rather than harsh synthetic chemicals, and the fact that it is safe to use around plants and shrubs , it’s easy to see that switching to Roof-A-Cide is a great idea for anyone concerned about saving the environment as well as saving money. Roof Treatment Inc. is located at 2045 S.W. 127th Avenue in Davie. Their phone number is 954-275-1831 and their website is www. RoofTreatment.com. Let Roof Treatment Inc. prove to you that the “treatment really is the cure!”

Plantation Resident Honored By The Archdiocese as Youngest “Woman of Faith” BY JILL SHARPE
C
hristina Wells is not your ordinary high school student. Wells, a Plantation resident and Senior at Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School (AMHS), is passionate about Catholic Education and service to her community. Her dedication and commitment to the Church along with her fundraising efforts, special projects, ministries, and service earned her special recognition from Archbishop Thomas Wenski at the Inaugural Women of Faith event sponsored by the Archdiocese of Miami. Wells was the youngest recipient of the award and was presented with a religious medallion inscribed with the name of the saint who virtuous qualities she represented. Richard P. Jean, Principal at Archbishop McCarthy said Wells was nominated for the virtue of youth, whose patron is St. Maria Goretti. In 2011, Wells established “Hugs for the Homebound”, a ministry whose mission is to encourage teams of students to visit homebound members of her Plantation Parish, St. Gregory. “We provide companionship, homemade gifts and baked goods to 45 homebound members during the Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter holidays,” Wells said. “The homebound Parish members as well as the students from Archbishop and St. Thomas Aquinas who participate all receive a great deal of joy from the experience.” In addition to the ministry, Wells established an Endowed Scholarship Fund at Archbishop to help students who might not be able to afford a Catholic Education. “In its inaugural year, I was able to raise $8,500 in donations for the endowment,” she said. Not content to rest on her initial fundraising success for the endowment, Wells, who loves golf and serves as the 2014-15 girls golf captain at Archbishop, organized and lined up sponsors for the First Annual Maverick Endowment Fund Golf Classic. She recruited over 35 local businesses to support the event and organized a full field of 120 golfers. The endowment fund now totals over $35,000. In addition, Wells has served her local parish as an alter server for 7 years and as a lector for the Sunday Night Teen Mass for two years. She is a Student Ambassador at AMHS and has been selected as a Eucharistic Minister for school masses. To date, she has completed over 860 service hours and achieved the President’s Gold Award for Service. In her free time, she also tutors students for the High School Placement Test for entrance into Catholic High School. Wells said she feels blessed to have received this award. “When I first received the phone call from the Archdiocese of Miami telling me that I had been selected to receive this recognition, I was speechless,” she said. “I am so honored to be recognized alongside such amazing women that have accomplished countless great things and have been dedicated to the Catholic Church for many years.”
The award was presented to 10 Women of Faith. Wells was the only teen chosen.

SCHOOL NEWS
South Plantation High School Newspaper Staff Hosts Coffeehouse Showcase Fundraiser BY JILL SHARPE
S
outh Plantation H igh School (SPHS) recently held
their first ever “Coffeehouse Showcase” as a platform for students to share their creative talents. Roughly four hundred people filled up the school’s Magnet Amphitheater on January 29th for the event. The show was put on by the Sword and Shield student newspaper, with all of the proceeds from the event supporting the publication. Students and their families filed into the amphitheater and mingled with teachers and staff over coffee and baked goods donated by Publix, Keiser University and Einstein Bros. Bagels. The room was decorated with plants donated from the school’s own Horticulture Department. The staff of the Sword and Shield took tickets by the door while the performers waited nervously by the side of the stage. The newspaper staff really is a team and we’re very family-oriented,” said Junior Editor Marissa Steinberg of Plantation. “I can’t wait for the show to start and I hope everyone enjoys it.” The showcase featured a wide variety of student performances of spoken word, rap, music, songwriting, singing, and poetry. All of the poetry was originally written by the students and the songs were all original interpretations. Performers covered a diverse range of topics like dating and relationships to current social and political issues. Steinberg and the newspaper’s Editor-in-Chief Shannon Gallagher served as Masters of Ceremony for the evening’s proceedings. “I’m excited to see everyone perform, and I’d love to host more community events here,” said Gallagher. “I’m a bit nervous, but also really excited. Hopefully, this will be the first of what will be an annual event.” Stephanie Polin, the Faculty Advisor to the Sword and Shield as well as a Journalism and Language Arts teacher, coordinated similar events at other schools. She welcomed the crowd along with words of encouragement from Principal Christine Henschel. Polin encouraged the crowd to “snap, not clap” by snapping their fingers instead of applauding to show their approval. Audience members could be forgiven for occasionally getting caught up in a performance and breaking out in applause, as the performers clearly put in a lot of time and preparation into their craft. The school held two separate nights of auditions for aspiring performers to hone their work. With more than 30 performances, the crowd enjoyed a full evening of literary arts. While poetry, prose, and spoken word readings proved to be quite popular, other art forms were represented. Faaris Uddin performed some slam poetry, a style that uses humor to tell an emotional or personal story. Popular songs like “Fallin”, “Drops of Jupiter”, and “Stay, Stay, Stay” may have been easily recognized by the crowd, but the students put their own signature vocal spin on them. Woody Julien of Plantation wowed the crowd with a reading of his poem “Untitled”. “I started writing poetry when I was 12 years old and I did it during some bad times,” said Julien. “I just wrote how I felt, and it wasn’t poetry at first, but I started perfecting things in my own way. The message of my poem is that everyone has dreams, and my dream is to have my voice heard.” After the event, organizers looked back on the impressive display of talent among SPHS students. “The Coffeehouse was a magical evening where kids truly got to express their emotions. It is incredible to see the smiles on their faces as they share their words and create a memory,” said Polin. “Children love to write about their thoughts and feelings and this venue gives them the opportunity to validate their thoughts as they perform. I am uniquely proud of the Sword and Shield staff whose dedication throughout the production made it such a success.” The Sword and Shield newspaper can be found on Facebook at https://www.facebook. com/theswordandshield.

s we observe Women ’ s H istory M onth in
March, we want to recognize and honor the many ways women continue to make Broward County a great place to live, work and visit. Women have led the charge toward full equality in the workplace and are critical in building the strong moral character of our county’s youth. Over the years, women made strong choices that brought historic changes in our county. In 1974, two women became the first female road patrol deputies to join the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Since then, many women have chosen a career in law enforcement. Today, I am proud to say that we have women throughout BSO who are in management and command – places and positions that, historically, were held by men. Our chief of staff is a woman as are others with the title of major, director, captain and lieutenant. Women also serve as K-9 handlers, the crime lab director and undercover detectives, just to name a few. However, leadership is not about being the first woman in any position, but about attracting the best person for the job. Since taking office over two years ago, my administration has created a level playing field so that women can more fairly compete for higher positions throughout BSO. Today, BSO has more women with the rank of sergeant and captain than under any previous administration. Consider the sergeant in charge of our aviation unit. As a pilot, she assists in finding wanted suspects from the air and saves lives by transporting injured patients safely to the hospital. Additionally, women also hold significant positions in Law Enforcement, Detention, Fire Rescue, Community Services, Regional Communications, Administration and every other corner of BSO. In a traditionally male-dominated field, it may surprise some that women make up 41 percent of BSO’s work force. In 2014, we added 148 women to our workforce and promoted 187 other women because they were the best candidates. Twenty-one percent of our sworn deputies are women, which is well above the national average of 12.7 percent. These positive changes came over time through real cultural change in the agency. Everyone now understands that – black, white, Hispanic, male, female, gay, straight, Christian, Jew and Muslim – opportunities for advancement in BSO are open to all with the skill, leadership and drive to succeed. One of the principle cornerstones of all police work is strengthening relationships between law enforcement and the community. The National Center for Women and Policing documents how female officers respond in emergency situations in a unique way that is crucial in building trust between police and the communities they serve. Overall, women officers rely more on communication to defuse potentially violent situations. BSO’s Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) deputies utilize this strategy when assessing situations involving individuals with mental illness. We encourage this style of smart policing agencywide, which grants mutual respect between deputies and our community. Finally, as 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, we remember our agency’s many historic achievements. We extend our thanks and gratitude to all the women of BSO – past and present – that helped make BSO the great public service agency it is today. I am deeply honored to work with these women. They have brought significant contributions to public safety and our community is a better place because of them. Our women are making history! For information, visit www.sheriff.org.

Advanced Treatment for Cancer-causing Polyps Without Surgery Removing polyps from the colon is standard practice to reduce the chance of colorectal cancer. But for polyps that are large or hard to reach, their removal during a colonoscopy is a challenge.
Tolga Erim, DO Cleveland Clinic Florida Gastroenterologist
Though many patients have traditional surgery for these complex polyps, Cleveland Clinic Florida gastroenterologists are using new
tools and techniques that require no stitches or long recovery times. It’s a procedure called endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). An endoscope is a thin flexible tube with a tiny camera, to which small surgery tools are attached. Mucosal refers to the tissue of the colon and resection means surgical removal. “Many patients and physicians may not be familiar with EMR or do not have access to it locally, so these polyps are often removed using traditional surgery,” says Cleveland Clinic gastroenterologist Tolga Erim, DO who specializes in advanced endoscopy
World class neurology and cancer care in South Florida. Our new center offers leading expertise and the most advanced treatments.
techniques. “But EMR gives patients another choice. With experienced specialists performing it, there is less risk of bleeding, and a much shorter recovery time compared to surgery.” During the procedure, Cleveland Clinic Florida physicians employ several standardized procedures to reach and remove the polyps. “For example, by injecting saline into the tissue, they can raise the polyp in order to resect it completely. In addition, newer snares, or metal loops, and tools to cauterize (seal) blood vessels make removal very efficient,” Dr. Erim says. According to reports from the National Institutes of Health, patients with large or complex polyps should be referred for EMR to a specialty facility such as Cleveland Clinic Florida, so they can avoid unnecessary surgery. “We’ve treated patients from as far away as South America,” Dr. Erim says. “Because of our expertise and experience with EMR, this is the appropriate place to come for hard-totreat polyps. We’ve become a referral center for it.” Once the procedure is over, the patient should avoid strenuous activity for a few days although you can continue on with regular day to day activities the next day. The patient’s diet will need to be altered so that they eat soft foods and drink fluids for the days following the procedure. After about six to twelve months, a follow-up appointment is needed to make sure the entire lesion was removed. After a followup procedure with the specialist who performed the EMR, patients can return to their regular physician.

T
he ankle is a hinged joint made of three bones;
tibia, fibula and the talus. These bones are bound together by ligaments. Tendons cross over the ankle creating movement in multiple directions. Injuries to the ankle can occur to the bones, ligaments, tendons or ankle joint. These injuries can occur from falls, twisting injuries, direct blows or from motor vehicle accidents. Diagnosis of injuries to the ankle is made by a thorough history of the injury and a physical examination. X-rays and occasionally CT scans and MRIs may be ordered in order to fully evaluate the extent of injury. Treatment depends on the type of injury. Simple injuries may require only rest or physical therapy. Moderate injuries may require immobilization in a cast. Some injuries may require surgery, whether open or arthroscopically, to correct the problem Occasionally, patients will continue to experience pain. Pain may occur from many sources. 1 – Synovial Impingement: Due to a sprain, the joint lining (synovium) becomes chronically inflamed causing persistent stiffness, swelling and pain. If physical therapy does not help, arthroscopic debridement will usually provide complete recovery. Prognosis is excellent. 2 – Instability of Ligaments: The ligaments may become disrupted from the injury. If they heal in a lengthened or stretched position, patients will complain that the ankle gives out easily. Surgery may be necessary to shorten the ligaments, thus providing stability. Prognosis is excellent. 3 – Arthritis or Bone Spurring: This may develop if a fracture occurs into the joint. X-rays may show perfect reduction, but if the cartilage has been injured, arthritis may develop. Treatment may include arthroscopic or open removal of the spurs and damaged cartilage. Prognosis is good. Long term recurrence is common, especially if arthritis has developed. 4 – Tendon Injury: Tendons connect muscles to bones and can stretch or tear following injury. Swelling, weakness or clicking may be persistent and cause pain with any activity. MRIs may be necessary to fully evaluate the tendon injury. Physical therapy and medication may provide some benefits. If a tendon is torn, surgery may be necessary to fully restore mobility and relieve pain. 5 – Cartilage Breaks: Cartilage covers bones and allows them to move smoothly without pain. Small fractures to them will cause stiffness, pain and swelling to the joint that won’t go away. MRIs will help evaluate the injury and arthroscopy will help to treat the problems in the joint. Some of these complications may occur by themselves or in combination with others. Nothing replaces a thorough history and physical examination. Ankle injuries may cause long-term disability. Proper, immediate attention to these injuries by an experienced physician will offer the best chance for full recovery. All of these injuries may be treated with success. People should not have to live with chronic pain syndromes to the foot, ankle or leg. Robert Sheinberg, DPM, is a Board Certified Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Fellow American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, Diplomat American Board of Podiatric Surgery. ooking for the best checking account rates?
How about lowering your car payment? This is a great time to get to know your local credit unions. Let’s get a fresh cup of coffee and discuss the credit union difference… What makes a credit union different from other financial institutions? Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives, owned and operated by their members. Earnings are returned to the members in the form of lower loan rates, higher interest rates on deposits and lower fees. Credit unions are also governed by a volunteer Board of Directors elected by and from the credit union’s membership. Recent changes in federal laws and regulations have made credit unions even stronger. Research shows that credit unions remain extremely popular for over 85 million Americans. An annual consumer survey completed by The American Banker, an independent publisher, confirmed that credit unions have been the favorite among consumers since 1983. How can I become a credit union member? Many people believe they are not eligible to join a credit union…..not so! By current federal statute, credit unions cannot serve the general public. However, many credit unions allow you to become a member based on qualifications such as, live or work in Broward County, your employer, Professional, Postal or Federal Employee Please call your local credit union to find out how you can qualify to become a member. Once you become a member you will always be a member, even if you move away. Is my money safe in a credit union? Credit unions like other financial institutions are closely regulated. The National Credit Union Administration, an agency of the federal government, insures deposits of credit union members up to $250,000.00. Credit Unions seem to have limited locations…Over 5,005 credit unions around the country share locations to give members convenient access to their accounts. This service is called Shared Services. Just go to the website, locate shared services, enter the zip code of where you are and the addresses of the locations closest to you will appear. Technology? Credit Union members can manage their accounts anytime and anywhere through Mobile Banking, Bill Pay, Online Banking, Direct Deposit and Zip-24, an audio response system. If you prefer personal assistance with your finances, credit unions continue to offer professional and knowledgeable staff that will be happy to assist you.
