Spring Is Just Around The Corner
T
he arrival of the spring season is welcomed as a sign of renewal and progress all around the world. While we watched news reports of snow and ice storms ravaging our neighbors in the Northern states, we are fortunate that our Florida winter season did not bring any significant cold-weather periods. Now, as the temperatures start to climb, the ocean is slowly warming up and the beaches are calling our names again. We remember why Florida is the place we choose to live. With Spring Break approaching, why not spend some time enjoying the splendors of our Sunshine State. This March 2016 issue also marks the inaugural issue of our newest publication, Our City Aventura. It reaches 20,000+ affluent homes and businesses in Aventura, Golden Beach and Sunny Isles Beach. Welcome to our family! We hope all of our readers enjoy learning about what’s happening in your community and schools, and provide us with story leads on what makes our life in Florida so enjoyable. On this happy note, let’s enjoy all that Florida has to offer and let’s have some fun.

Screening with a Meaning COMMUNITY NEWS
BY JILL SHARPE
P
lantation based Goodman Jewish Family Services proudly presented a moving and inspiring movie called Lady in Number 6 at its Second Annual “Screening with a Meaning” on January 21st. The 2014 Oscar® -winning documentary tells the story of Alice Herz-Sommer who was the world’s oldest known pianist and Holocaust survivor at age 110. She shares her view on how to remain optimistic, through music and laughter. Guests joined the special screening at Cinema Paradiso, 503 SE 6th Street in Fort Lauderdale. The evening also featured very special musicians, the Holocaust Survivor Band. The South Florida- based group was founded in 2015 and comprises survivors and their children. The talented musicians have received significant acclaim – they recently performed at the Kennedy Center, and have been featured in the New York Times. Through their music, their hope is to educate and inform the world that hatred and genocide are unacceptable. “It was a great pleasure to invite the South Florida community to see this touching film and to hear the remarkable story of Alice Herz-Sommer,” said Jacob Schreiber, CEO of Goodman JFS. “In addition, the music of the Holocaust Survivor Band was both entertaining and a powerful reminder of what these extraordinary people overcame.”

Dogs and Their Owners Had a Blast at Doggie Palooza BY JILL SHARPE
D
oggie Palooza, a day of outdoor fun for dogs and dog lovers in Plantation, was once again a success this year as hundreds of dogs and their human companions came out to Happy Trails Dog Park on January 30th. Admission for canines was free but human companions paid $2 to benefit Hollydogs Greyhound Adoption, an all-volunteer organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing Greyhounds in need throughout Florida. Doggie Palooza, sponsored by Country Inn Pet Resort, Green Paws Pet Market and the City of Plantation Parks & Recreation Department, featured demonstrations provided by Plantation Police K-9, a Frisbee Dog Show, and retail and food vendors. Dog owners had the chance to show off their dog talents in best-dressed, pet-owner look-a-like and best pet trick contests. Plantation residents Mike and Rita Freimark’s two greyhounds won the bestdressed competition. “We dressed our greyhounds Phantom and Sinbad as greyhound buses for the costume contest to help raise awareness for greyhound adoption,” Mike Freimark said. “It was a great time for a great cause.”

Second Annual JAFCO Dream Lounge Event Raises $103,000 to Grant Wishes for Children BY JILL SHARPE

t was a bitter cold evening in South Florida, but there was a warm and loving atmosphere for the more than 285 people who gathered at Mario’s Osteria in Boca Raton in support of JAFCO’s second annual Dream Lounge event. The evening cocktail party raised $103,000 and helped deliver dreams to abused and neglected children and children with developmental disabilities in South Florida. Mario’s Osteria closed the restaurant to all other patrons that night and exclusively opened it to guests of Dream Lounge. The evening soiree featured an upscale lounge atmosphere, where dream angels circled the room allowing guests to select dreams for the JAFCO children. Dreams were also available on Dream Trees. Dreams ranged anywhere from $36 to $25,000 and included: $500 for a birthday party, $1,000 for a JAFCO child to go to prom, $2,500 for summer camp, $5,000 for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah celebration and $10,000 for the entire Children’s Village to take a trip to Disney World. The idea for the evening cocktail party verses the traditional fundraising lun-

cheon was created by event chairs Nel Bloom, Kimberly Kaminoff, Lucianna Perlin, Jackie Tavares, Samantha Grimaldi and Stacey Labell, all longtime supporters of JAFCO. The evening event gives people the chance to dress up and enjoy a spectacular evening out. “We wanted to give our supporters, many of whom work during the day, an opportunity to attend these events too,” said Lucianna Perlin, event co-chair. “So we thought a posh evening event would be a great way to attract new supporters for JAFCO.” The upscale party also featured famed and fabulous South Beach DJ Derek Walin. Protect Your Roof with Roof-A-Cide Feature Story
By Julie Levin
W
ith South Florida’s intense heat, humidity and heavy rains, keeping your roof clean is a never ending challenge. Violation notices from property owners’ associations or from the city for the ugly black streaks and dirty appearance of your roof can be a headache. In addition to these two issues, the pressure of locating a reputable company with competitive prices and speedy results will certainly add to the stress of maintaining your very own home sweet home. However, at Roof Treatment Inc., their goal is to provide customers with exactly the kind of quality service discerning homeowners expect. Located locally in Davie, this family owned and operated business is licensed and insured, and has serving south Florida for over ten years. “We have the best product on the market. We preserve roofs, we don’t destroy roofs!” said Christina Miele, who co-owns Roof Treatment Inc. with brother, Frank Miele.
The Oak Ridge community roof “before” using Roof-A-Cide.
Roof Treatment Inc. is actually one of a few companies in the South Florida area that uses a patented product called RoofA-Cide. Effective on all types of roofs, this innovative chemical is a 100% copper-based material that is the only EPA approved algaecide / fungicide on the market. Not only is it gentle on your roof, but it is safe for plants and shrubs as well. Christina states that it is the most effective alternative to repetitive roof cleaning, which has been known to cause premature damage. “There’s no chlorine, bleach, or harsh chemicals to deteriorate the roof.” Traditional cleaning typically involves chlorine bleach or pressure cleaning, both of which have been known to cause unnecessary and sometimes extensive damage to the roof and surrounding property. These methods also yield minimal results that typically last a mere 6-12 months. Roof-A-Cide, however, is guaranteed to last two years. Each customer receives a two year warranty backed by the applicator and manufacturer. Less cleaning, and less people walking on your roof means greater durability. A
14
properly cared for roof could last up to 25-30 years, even though many homeowners in Florida are forced to replace their roofs after only 12-15 years because of the damage caused by repeated cleaning. Roof Treatment Inc. begins the roof cleaning process on most roofs with a product known as “Roof Restore”, a detergent which is sprayed on and then removed with a low pressure hose. “We have developed a product that will remove the mold and mildew and bring it to the surface of the asphalt shingles and stone coat steel,” states Frank Miele. After this thorough cleaning, trained technicians apply the Roof-A-Cide product, which functions as a guard against black mold on all types of roofs, including asphalt shingle, stone coat steal, tile, barrel tile or clay. “It adheres to all types of roof material” Christina says Roof-A-Cide is a safe and effective method that permanently eradicates mold, unlike chlorine. Chlorine initially gets rid of the mold, but once the gas from the chlorine evaporates, it leaves behind a residue that becomes fertilizer for the next colony of mold to grow. It becomes an accelerator. Consequently, repeated cleaning is needed much sooner.
Frank and Christina Miele, the co-owners of Roof Treatment, Inc.
Cide comes with an unconditional 2-year guarantee. Once your roof is cleaned, authorized applicators will treat your roof with Roof-A-Cide and will guarantee discoloration for two years. When technicians return in two years, the roof does not need to be recleaned, just re-treated. “All we have to do is come back and give the roof a light spray every two years. It takes less time because we don’t have to clean it again,” he said. “And of course, It will expand the life of your roof because you don’t have people walking on it every year, and you don’t have water pressure or harsh chemicals beating it down,” he said.
The Oak Ridge Community roof “after” the Roof-A-Cide application.
The natural erosion that occurs over time from the basic weather conditions is enough to bring most roofs to the point where annual inspections and minor repairs are a necessity to prevent significant repair costs. Along with repeated cleaning, concrete tiles are more likely to shift, slip, or break and asphalt shingles are more likely to become brittle and crack. As these factors take their toll on the roof, there becomes a greater chance of damaging the roof simply by walking on it, or even worse, the roof becomes so compromised it caves under even minimal stress. Roof-A-Cide eliminates the need for repeated and unnecessary pressure cleanings. It will be the last time you clean your roof,” Frank said. Roof-A-

Something else to keep in mind, with water conservation becoming a rising concern, one RoofA-Cide application takes about 30 gallons of water, equal to a 5 minutes shower, per two years in comparison to 1,000+ gallons of water needed to pressure clean per year on an average 3000 square foot roof to achieve the same results. This along with EPA registration makes it an easy decision for homeowners to go green without paying too much green. For more information, you can call Roof Treatment Inc at 954-275-1831 or visit them at 2045 SW 127th Avenue in Davie. You can also check out the exclusive Roof-A-Cide product at www.roofacide.com.

Sunrise Mayor Mike Ryan Endorses Governor Scott’s Proposed Reforms for Enterprise Florida BY JILL SHARPE
C
ity of Sunrise Mayor Mike Ryan recently announced his support for Governor Scott’s proposed reforms for Enterprise Florida, including the creation of the Florida Enterprise Fund. “I’m proud to support Governor Scott’s proposal to create the Florida Enterprise Fund and improve the economic development process at Enterprise Florida,” explained Mayor Ryan. “Enterprise Florida has been an important tool for creating jobs in our community, including an incentive to expand jobs in our region. Reforms to streamline the process will continue to diversify our local economy, empower our small businesses, and create even more great jobs.” Under the program, the Governor would have full discretion to offer incentives of $1 million or less, which would typically help smaller companies in targeted industries as well as those that will bring high-wage jobs. “Too often, economic incentives for important job creation are seemingly for big companies only,” outlined Mayor Ryan. “However, we know at the local level, incentivizing new entrepreneurs can often lay the foundation to important job and investment expansion in the future.” Sunrise is home to one of the most successful and highly populated corporate parks in South Florida, as well as the Sawgrass Mills Mall and the NHL Florida Panthers. Sunrise is no stranger to competing nationally to attract and retain jobs. Job expansion efforts into Sunrise that received some form of economic

incentive include Emerson, Bolton Medical, ProcessMap Corporation, HBO, Sunera, Endoscopy Specialists, All About Staffing, and American Express. “We work hard to provide or access innovative incentives to attract and retain jobs in our region,” said Mayor Ryan. “Having additional tools to further promote our region as an incubator for new jobs and significant capital investment is crucial to our long-term regional success.” The Governor’s proposals endorsed by Enterprise Florida include: ▸▸ Creating a new $250 million competitive fund called the “Florida Enterprise Fund.” ▸▸ Making the Florida Enterprise Fund a state trust fund to replace the existing escrow account to allow the state’s investment to accrue more interest. ▸▸ Increasing the Legislature’s role in competing for job creation projects by requiring that any deal over $1 million have the approval of the Speaker of the House and the Senate President, as well as the Governor. ▸▸ Reforming the return on investment requirements by eliminating the use of waivers and requiring a 10 percent annualized return on top of the original amount invested in a company. ▸▸ Streamlining the state’s approval process while continuing to ensure that NO tax dollars leave the state trust fund until a company meets specific job creation goals spelled out in their contract.

Patriot Marching Band Gives Back
SCHOOL NEWS
BY JILL SHARPE
M
embers of the American Heritage Patriot Marching Band learned the true meaning of giving back this past holiday season when they served as volunteers at a very special place called Give Kids the World Village. The Village is a 79-acre nonprofit resort in Central Florida that provides weeklong, cost-free vacations to children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. The Village and its community partners provide children and their families accommodations in fully-furnished villas, transportation, tickets to theme parks, daily entertainment and much more. The Patriot Band performed for the children and families, donated $3000 and distributed stuffed animals, art supplies and costumes. While the band played Band Directors Isabelle Antoine and Kimberly Imerbsin passed out gifts to the children and families. “The whole experience was very humbling,” Antoine said. “It truly brought me great joy to see these terminally ill children dance their cares away to the music.” Each year 27,000 children in the United States are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. Half of all children eligible for a wish through a partnering wish-granting organization choose to visit Central Florida and its collection of theme parks and other attractions. The goal of the Village is simply to provide everything these deserving families need to make their trip the vacation of a lifetime. Since 1986, 143,000 children and their families have had their dreams fulfilled by the Village. “Being with those kids and families made my worries seem not so big in the grand scheme of things,” Antoine said.

Cutting Colon Cancer Out of the Family Tree About five of every 100 people with colon or rectal cancer have the disease because of a gene Giovanna DaSilva, MD passed down through their family. Researchers at Cleveland Clinic Florida are investing in specialists and resources to identify these families at risk, with the goal of preventing inherited colorectal cancer from ever developing at all. The focus is on familial adenomatous polyposis, or FAP. “Familial” means inherited, or passed down through families. Adenomas are specific types of polyps that can become cancer. People with FAP have a 100 percent chance to get colorectal
cancer, and parents with FAP have a 50/50 chance of passing it down to their children. “We want to get the word out about our program, so we can let as many people as possible know if they’re at risk, educate others in their family and offer each one the latest medical care, education and support,”says Giovanna DaSilva, MD, a Cleveland Clinic Florida colorectal surgeon and researcher. The centerpiece of the program is the Jagelman Registry, a database of patient information of families with FAP. Using this data, physicians at Cleveland Clinic Florida work with teams elsewhere to research the condition and share the latest medicines and other treatments. Besides colon polyps, FAP can also cause growths or
cancer in the stomach, pancreas, bone and other areas. The earliest preventive care ranges from medicines that stop the growth of polyps to simple colonoscopies to remove those that have not yet become cancer. “Using the registry, we’re able to let patients know what screenings they should have and how often. That can save their lives and those of their family members,” Dr. DaSilva says. “We’re definitely very proud of our program, and we’re looking forward to helping more and more patients through it.”

outh Plantation High School (SPHS) opened their doors to interested parents and middle school students at an open house on January 14th. The event was built around the tremendous interest families have had in applying for the school’s top-notch Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration Magnet program. Attendees had the chance to explore different parts of the expansive SPHS campus to see what the school had to offer. The gymnasium was packed with athletic teams, electives and student organizations ranging from the more traditional clubs like debate, chorus and newspaper to groups dedicated to modern topics like health sciences and web design. Many parents flocked to the media center where staff helped them complete the magnet program applicaTop left: Members of the Paladin Society Performance group talk tion. In addition to classrooms and an amphitheater, the building showcased magnet and AP classes like agriscience, marine science and zoology. On the technology side, Gustavo Junco was there to demonstrate some of the drones he uses in the class he teaches
on the subject. “Students here can get certified in safety, flying and building drones as it applies to agricultural settings,” he said. “The drones students work with can fly over a field and look at how healthy crops are. It’s the future of agriculture.” Chris Cooper-Lai of Fort Lauderdale visited SPHS with her son Kai, a New River Middle School student. “We’re pleasantly surprised because we thought the magnet program was just about environmental science but we saw all their different offerings like agriculture and the arts,” said CooperLai. “I really like the variety of classes like robotics and engineering. They have a lot to offer and we’re very impressed.” Denise Horland was volunteering her time at the open house as she is the parent of twins at SPHS and wanted to introduce the magnet program to other parents. “Being here has been a wonderful experience,” she Top right: Parents and students visit the Marine Science Lab beamed. “There’s a wide array of opporBottom right: Students show some of tunities and class offerings. Is This the Right Time? By Evan Baron
I spoke with an individual who had been to see me for a free consultation some time ago. He had a few questions, which he was hoping I could answer for him. In our conversation, he indicated that the reason he had not yet decided to file for divorce is because he was waiting for the “right time.” I explained that in my experience there probably is never a “right time,” but rather a person should want to avoid the wrong time. A person’s initial consultation with my office is free. This often means that an individual may be considering a dissolution, but he/she is not ready to truly begin the process. That “first step,” that decision to actually begin a court proceeding, is sometimes the most difficult of all decisions to be made. It means that the thought of obtaining a divorce is slowly becoming a reality. Some people who come to see me have already decided that they are ready to move forward. Perhaps they have been interviewing other attorneys and are now somewhat familiar with the process. Perhaps they have attempted to mediate the case, but have been unsuccessful. They may have already had their decision made for them by their spouse, who has filed for a dissolution already.

The majority of the people I see are generally not ready to take that first step at the initial consultation. I truly understand a person’s hesitancy to jump right into the situation. At the consultation, I provide them with a great deal of information, which usually takes some time to digest. I never encourage an individual to begin the process unless they are sure there is truly no other solution. Some people think about it for days. Some people think about it for weeks or months. Some people think about it for years. I was recently contacted by two individuals - one who met with me a year ago and one almost two years ago. Each needed to wait until they found that elusive “right time.” There is usually no harm in waiting, other than the reality that a person may continue to live in an unhappy situation. Of course, waiting can at times result in a changing financial situation in the household. It could also result in a spouse moving or hiding assets in anticipation of the divorce as well. It could affect an alimony award, as additional years of marriage can often determine the eligibility and/or the duration of the support. The only situation in which I will never recommend waiting is if domestic violence exists in the household. That situation must be addressed immediately. Everyone who is moving forward with a divorce has their own individual “right time” to begin. I just tell people that when that time arrives, they will probably know it. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.
Mobile Banking – 4 Ways To Stay On Top Of Your Finances While On The Go ASK THE EXPERT

ost people have a checklist they go through before they leave the house. Is the stove turned off? Are the doors locked? Do I have my wallet, my keys and my cellphone? The only thing that has changed about that process in the last few years has been the addition of the cellphone. According to Pews Research Center, nearly twothirds of Americans use smartphone apps to navigate numerous important life activities, such as a Mobile Banking app. With just a couple of taps, you can access a whole suite of financial information. Let’s look at four scenarios where mobile banking can save you some time…and even some money. Say goodbye to security woes Despite all of the data breaches that have been in the public eye over the past few years, no one has figured out how to compromise mobile devices as a platform. Security leaks have affected PCs, Macs and point of sale terminals, but no widespread security vulnerability has compromised mobile banking. Despite the fear, mobile banking is actually a fundamentally secure platform. Data transmitted from your cellphone to your provider is heavily encrypted. If you lose your phone, it can be remotely deactivated and passwords usually aren’t stored on the device. You can check your balance any time Rather than waiting for your statement every month or booting up that slow PC for checking your account balances online, you can view transactions at any time. The convenience of mobile banking can also keep you from making costly mistakes. If you know funds may be running tight, check your account balance while
in the checkout line to make sure you can cover the cost of your purchases and avoid costly overdraft fees. It’s easier than ever to keep track of your finances! It’s where you’ll find the next big thing Mobile payments and mobile check depositing are becoming more widely available and are already being used in many places. As technology gets better, these functions will become cheaper, faster and even more widespread. Getting involved in mobile banking on the ground floor will help you stay up to speed with this rapidly evolving world. 24-hour-a-day instant access Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night in a panic because you can’t remember if you paid a specific bill? Worried that someone may have accessed your account? If you have these concerns and are nowhere near your computer, you could just suffer through them or use a mobile app to check your balance and transaction history. You can do all of this any time you’ve got your phone, day or night. Mobile banking won’t replace traditional, face-to-face interaction. There will always be a place in the credit union service standards for human interaction. What mobile banking apps offer is a wonderful supplement to those high-quality services. Space-age convenience, top-level security, and blissful peace of mind are all available from your pocket, anywhere in the world. Hand WasHing: a simple, effective Way to combat germs
I
t’s that time of year again…people with coughs, sneezes and runny noses seem to be lurking around every corner. Each year, kids miss an estimated 22 million days of school due to the common cold. One of the best ways you can prevent against illnesses such as cold and flu is by washing your hands. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the single most important thing you can do to keep from getting sick and spreading illness to others is to wash your hands. It seems simple, but cleaning your hands regularly can get rid of the germs you pick up from other people, or even everyday objects that you touch. Germs can enter the body through the eyes, nose and mouth – all areas that we often touch without even realizing it. You are also at risk of picking up or spreading germs if you eat or prepare food without washing your hands. The CDC notes that germs can multiply under certain conditions in some foods – meaning more people are at risk of getting sick. Germs can even get on objects that you regularly touch: hand rails, door knobs, countertops, etc. To gain the maximum protection from hand hygiene, the CDC recommends washing your hands at the following times using either soap and water or a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol: • Before, during and after preparing food • Before eating food • Before and after caring for someone who is sick • Before and after treating a cut or wound • After using the toilet • After blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing • After touching an animal, animal feed or animal waste • After handling pet food or pet treats • After touching garbage How you wash your hands is just as important as the act itself. When using soap and water: • Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. • Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails. • Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Tip from the CDC: Humming the “Happy Birthday” song twice, from beginning to end, while scrubbing. • Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. • Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. When using a hand sanitizer: • Apply the product to the palm of one hand. Make sure to check the label for the correct amount. • Rub your hands together. • Rub the product over all surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are dry. • The CDC states that hand sanitizers are not as effective as soap and water when hands are visibly dirty or greasy.

His favorite toy is his stuffy Lion and he loves to play with his frisbee and run around his patio. He doesn’t like when he is left alone and likes to chill out in his favorite chair, bed or anywhere in the house his family is. He was last seen eating his favorite treats and taking a nap.
