Spring is finally here!

T

his Florida ‘winter’ season certainly featured a variety of weather conditions. We had a number of cooler days and even colder nights followed by warm and wet weather. As we enter April, the temperatures are slowly creeping upwards and the A/C units are humming. Time to think about what to do during the approaching summer months. Many of us are busy planning where to go and what to do for summer vacation. Like my family, many have relatives and friends out-of-state or even in another country. Summer is always a fantastic time to go and visit, to reconnect, and to maintain a close bond with those we love. As South Floridians we love to visit different cities, climb mountains, and travel abroad. Summer time is also time for camp activities and summer school. We are blessed with a variety of different camps from which to choose, including language camps, sports camps, music camps, arts & craft camps, and much more. There are a multitude of different kids’ activities and camps advertised in this issue. In addition, keep an eye out for our annual Summer Camp Guide, which will be featured in our May issue. There is something for everybody. Whatever you decide to do this spring and summer, just don’t forget to take along a copy of the ‘Our City Magazine’ to send us your picture.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT COMMUNITY NEWS

Broward Meals on Wheels Awarded Grant from the Jim Moran Foundation BY JILL SHARPE

P

lantation based Broward Meals on Wheels was recently the proud recipient of a $100,000 grant from The Jim Moran Foundation in support of

its Emergency Meals Program for seniors. Broward Meals on Wheels is one of the largest of 5,000 Meals on Wheels programs across the country working every day to protect millions of elderly individuals from isolation and hunger – an effort made possible by generous donors and volunteers who help in communities just like Broward County all across America. The number of seniors in Broward continues to increase, and it will take much work to meet the escalating need. The Emergency Meals Program enables Broward Meals on Wheels to provide meals to homebound clients for a limited time who suddenly find themselves without food and without any way to get food and who need to be assessed by the Meals on Wheels social work staff to gain access to community

based care. Seniors who benefit from this program have recently been or are about to be released from the hospital. Malnourishment caused by a lack of access to proper nutrition leads to poor recovery rates, increased re-hospitalization, and unnecessary early institutionalization. Emergency meals can truly make the difference between aging with dignity in their homes or long-term institutionalization and premature death for the clients Broward Meals on Wheels serves. “We are overwhelmed with gratitude towards The Jim Moran Foundation for awarding us these much needed funds to provide emergency meals to our homebound seniors,” said Mark Adler, Executive Director of Broward Meals on Wheels. “Through this new partnership, we will be able to provide muchneeded, nutritious emergency meals to thousands of seniors. This is truly a testament to the caring and support that makes our community strong.” Members of the community can get involved with Broward Meals on Wheels by donating their time, talent or treasure to help further the mission as they continue to serve Broward’s senior population. Individuals or corporations interested in getting involved can learn more at www.bmow.org.

Plantation Resident Heather Geronemus Leads MADD 5K/WALK to Stop Drunk Driving BY JILL SHARPE

T

housands of walkers and runners, led by Plantation resident Heather Geronemus, will make strides in the ongoing fight against drunk drivers during the annual MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) La Croix Water WALK LIKE MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K on Sunday, April 24th. WALK Like MADD and MADD Dash is MADD’s signature fundraising event in support of its mission to end drunk driving. The event takes place in over 80 cities in the U.S. including Fort Lauderdale. The walk/run will start at Huizenga Park, 32 E. Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale at 7:30 a.m. and take place along Fort Lauderdale’s Riverwalk. Geronemus, whose father Dr. Robert Perry Geronemus, was struck and killed by a drunk driver in 2009, established the Fort Lauderdale event in 2011. Since 2011, Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K has raised more than $750,000 for MADD Broward & Palm Beach. “No child, parent, family member, or friend should have to go through losing someone they care for as a result of drunk driving,” said Geronemus. “This event will continue to raise funds to educate our community on the dangers of drunk driving, provide victim support and youth programs to stop this violent crime - one that is completely preventable.” This year’s festivities will include an awards ceremony, live musical performances, vendors and educational booths, and appearances by local dignitar-

ies. Speakers will include this year’s Honorary Chairperson Sheriff Scott Israel of Broward Sheriff’s Office, Col Alvin Pollock of the Broward Sheriff’s Office and Geronemus. “The 2016 Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K is a fun way to join forces with others in the community to stop drunk driving,” said Sheriff Israel. “By walking or running together, participants can not only enjoy a great event, but also reinforce the mission of MADD: to The start line at the 2015 Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking.” given for top fundraiser, top team (private and corpoTo register for the 2016 La Croix Water WALK like rate), as well as overall and age group awards for 5K MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K visit www. finishers. walklikemadd.org/fortlauderdale. Disease Control and Prevention, smoking is “the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States.” Compared to nonsmokers, smokers are at an increased risk of heart disease due to the buildup of plaque in their coronary arteries overtime. Quitting smoking can lower the risk of heart disease – and just one year of not smoking may cut heart disease risk in half. Maintain a healthy weight. A healthy weight can be calculated by looking at either body mass index (BMI) or waist circumference. Nicole Davis

Nearly every day, Nicole Davis drove by Florida Medical Center’s Freestanding Emergency Center in Davie on her way home from work. She never knew the importance it would later play in her life. “One day in particular, I felt like my heart was coming out of my chest,” she recalls. “It was pounding really fast, and I had a feeling something was wrong. Nicole knew she needed medical attention, so she decided to visit the conveniently located Emergency Center near Nob Hill Road. “The staff saw me heading towards the entrance from the parking lot with my hands on my chest and quickly grabbed a wheelchair and opened the front doors for me,” she says. “I knew right away I was where I needed to be.” A nurse immediately tested Nicole’s heart rate and determined it was 210, two to three times faster than the normal range of 60 to 100 beats per minute. “The doctors and nurses who treated me sat down by my side and calmly explained everything they were going to do to get my heart rate back to normal,” she recalls. They gave Nicole medication, and once her heart rate went down, she was transported to Florida Medical Center (ranked among the top 10 percent in the nation for cardiology services and coronary interventional procedures in 2014) for further treatment. Nicole’s doctor determined that the “pounding” she felt in her chest was a result of premature ventricular contractions, which are extra, abnormal heartbeats that disrupt the regular heart rhythm. Since leaving the hospital, she has been taking medication to help control her heart rate and hasn’t experienced anymore cardiac issues. Nicole was so impressed by the care she received at the Emergency Center and at the hospital. For more information about heart health, talk with your doctor or call 1-866-498LIFE (5433) for a free referral to a cardiologist near you.

Sunrise Mayor Mike Ryan Fulfills Dream of Learning How to Play the Scottish Bagpipes BY JILL SHARPE

S

unrise Mayor Mike Ryan was recently named the 2016 “Honorary Scotsman of the Day” at the annual Scottish Festival and Highland Games. Ryan, a partner at the law firm of Krupnick Campbell Malone Buser Slama Hancock Liberman, recently completed the 2016 South Florida Pipe and Drum Academy. “For some time, I have been interested in learning how to play the bagpipes,” explained Ryan. “Attending the 2016 South Florida Pipe and Drum Academy was an opportunity for complete immersion in the art of bagpipes while developing strong new friendships and camaraderie.”

The 2016 South Florida Pipe and Drum Academy, now in its second year in South Florida, was hosted this year by the City of Boca Raton. The Academy instructors flew in from around the world, including from Scotland, to teach all levels of pipers and drummers. From beginners, like Ryan, through experienced pipers and drummers, students were taught with tried and true methods used to teach the best pipers and drummers in the world. The instructors, who have

taught all over the globe, have also received many world championship and competition accolades over the years. “We have a community which appreciates a diversity of cultures and the arts. The vision to create a Pipe and Drum Academy clearly recognized the strong interest in piping and drums in South Florida,” said Ryan. The five day course finished with a free concert for families and friends and an awards ceremony. Ryan was voted by the instructors as the “Most Promising Chanter Student” and received an engraved wood chanter box. “I look forward to working hard over the next twelve months to improve my abilities and to attend the 2017 South Florida Pipe and Drum Academy,” said Ryan. The South Florida Pipe and Drum Academy was also honored with a City of Sunrise Proclamation during the City’s March 8, 2016 Commission meeting, declaring “South Florida Pipe and Drum Academy Month.”

This Scout Finally Earned His Wings- Justin Shultz Receives Eagle Scout Ranking

Can Do Kid

By Beverly Perkins

J

ustin Shultz, a Piper High honor student, can now add the renowned Eagle Scout ranking to his already impressive list of accolades. Justin, who has been an active leader from his early start in Boy Scout Troop 245 at the age of ten, finally achieved his goal of earning the prestigious ranking before his eighteenth birthday. In order to accomplish such a feat, one must earn a minimum of 21 mandatory badges and complete a rigorous service project. As expected, Justin’s task was an ambitious one. He wanted his project to benefit the children at Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Options (JAFCO), a local Sunrise non-profit charity. He planned on building a 12ft.x16ft.x11ft.tall, 3,000 pound pergola shade structure along with a custom designed picnic table on their Jewish Children’s Village campus. However, in order to do so, he needed to raise funds for the venture. He did this by enlisting the help of Bru’s Room Wings & Things and Chester’s Fort Lauderdale Harley Davidson of Sunrise. Both businesses gave back a percentage of sales to the cause. Additionally, he hosted a car wash and a spaghetti dinner and received many generous donations from family and friends including his own paychecks. It ultimately cost $3000 in addition to the many donated materials. Once the job got underway, it took three full work days and over 50 volunteers consisting of a total of 846 volunteer hours, 165 hours being Justin’s personal ones. This outstanding scout planned and managed the entire activity from beginning

to end. Besides the numerous volunteers he had the assistance of local architect, Ian Neuberger to help with the design. Sarah Franco, Director of JAFCO was enthusiastic to accept this great place for her children to relax, enjoy and obtain outdoor counseling. After completion in October of 2015, Justin had to go before the Troop 245 Board of Review to determine if he was ready to go to the District Board of Review. He received the green light, and was awarded by the South Florida Council/Pine Island District Eagle Scout Board of Review the famed Eagle Scout ranking by the end of the year. Recently, over 150 friends, relatives, Scouts and Adult Scouters gathered at the Tamarac Moose Lodge, to honor Justin at his Eagle Scout Court of Honor. The ceremony was MC’ed by his former Scoutmaster, Mr. Terry LeBlanc. Numerous people involved in his Scouting career, spoke about him. Among them, were his Asst. Cubmaster, Chip Collison, his former Scoutmaster, Tim Piper, Order of the Arrow Lodge Advisor, Bill Gililand and Sarah Franco, the Director of JAFCO. During the ceremony, Justin honored his father, Mark Shultz, who is the current Scoutmaster of Troop 245, and Mr. Scott Tromans, Troop 245 Asst. Scoutmaster and Justin’s Life to Eagle Coach, with Mentor pins. The evening was capped off by a dinner and accompanied by a display of Justin’s projects and achievements throughout his Scouting career. Justin Shultz officially dedicated his project to the memory of his grandmother, Barbara Carol Closter.

AT&T Grant to Broward Education Foundation Will Fund Plantation High School STEM Project BY JILL SHARPE

G

SECTION News School HEAD

rant money recently received from AT&T will help The Broward Education Foundation fund some unique projects at Plantation High School. The grant money, intended to facilitate a critical link from classroom to career, specifically targets increased understanding of how classroom curriculum translates into science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers. The students at Plantation High program mircoprocessors to control sensors and output for projects ranging from an infrared person counter to automatic scoreboards and sonar activated aerosol dispersal units. According to their teacher, Joseph Vallone, students brainstorm ideas to develop a project, compose project proposals, research the parts necessary and then program their prototypes. “The students write code on the computer, send it to the mircroprocessor, and then wire

up the circuits with sensors and output devices, like servers and display boards, “Vallone said. “When they have a fully functioning device, they will build it into a case and present it as a team to industry professionals as if the device were being pitched in a sales situation.” One hundred forty-five students are participating in the project and GFS Corp is serving as the business partner. The goal, according to Thomas Severino, president and CEO of Broward Education Fund, is to introduce students to career opportunities that they otherwise might not have been exposed to. “We know that industries engaged in STEM disciplines will create a majority of high-value, high-wage jobs and within ten years, almost nine out of ten new jobs will require education beyond a high school degree,” said Joe York, AT&T Florida President. “We are pleased to make this contribution because Florida’s K-12 education foundations are well positioned to be the link between schools and local businesses for students, enabling them to build connections with potential employers in their communities, get a sense of what careers they offer and the skill sets they require.”

Miss Florida Visits American Heritage

SECTION NEWS SCHOOL HEAD

BY JILL SHARPE

M

iss Florida graced 4th 5th, and 6th graders at American Heritage School (AHS) with a walk on campus and a beautiful message inspiring students to believe in themselves. Wearing her crown and sash, Mary Katherine Fechtel reminded students about recycling and preserving the Everglades and also about Internet safety. She urged them to not talk to people they don’t know on the Internet. Educating students about the Everglades is a platform supported by the Miss Florida contest, and through her reign in 2015-2016, Fechtel has visited

countless schools speaking about the importance of conservation and protecting our environment right here in Florida. Her personal platform is promoting awareness about Internet safety, and she is passionate about instilling confidence in young people. “We try to find value in ourselves by posting on Facebook and Snapchat, but each of you will have an experience that will propel you in the future, and you don’t need to be on social media to feel worthwhile,” Fechtel said. Miss Florida’s visit to AHS was hosted by the

Lower School Student Council headed by Stephanie Block, Christina Mikkelsen, and Anne Chmelir. After her talk and Q&A session in the MainTheatre, the Student Council Board Members gave Fechtel a special tour of the Environmental Education Center where she met the Center animals and signed some autographs. A surprise guest, Jung Bin An, AHS 11th grader, also joined the group. Jung is Miss Broward County Outstanding Teen and aspires to influence her peers just as Fechtel inspires so many young leaders throughout the community and the world.

Coffeehouse Performance Puts The Spotlight on the Literary Arts at South Plantation High School BY MARISSA STEINBERG, STUDENT WRITER

W

ith the use of standardized testing in school systems being higher than ever, creativity and arts are often overlooked and underestimated amongst students. Multiple choice exams fill the curriculum and it leaves students with very little time to find the creative side of themselves. To appreciate the literary arts and as a fundraiser for South Plantation High School’s school newspaper, the Sword & Shield, the second annual Coffeehouse was performed on January 28th, 2016.

“We were all very excited to put on this show for the second year in a row. It not only brings in a lot of money for the newspaper, but is a great way for students to express themselves, which they don’t always get the chance to do,” said Faaris Uddin, senior at South Plantation High School. The coffeehouse showcased over 25 students and teachers who performed a variety of spoken word, poetry, and musical pieces. While on the stage, many students discussed problems in their lives or social problems occurring in the world around them. The show began at 6:30 p.m., and over 400 people filled South Plantation High School’s Magnet Amphitheater. Not only did students participate, but teachers and administration showed their creative side, as well. Hernan Borja, assistant principal, read a poem he wrote in his academic years based off of Maya Angelou’s, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. “It was great to see not only students, but faculty get involved in such a great performance. It made our school feel like a small community, and everyone was there supporting each other while reading,” said Nicole Tripp, senior. Thanks to sponsors such as Publix, Einstein Bros Bagels, and Keiser University, refreshments were served, and viewers were able to snack while enjoying the show. The coffeehouse fundraiser was organized by English teacher and school newspaper advisor Stephanie Polin, with help from other teachers in the school. It was an extremely successful night, and it was evident that people were inspired by the art of spoken word. Marissa Steinberg is a senior at South Plantation High School. She is the editor-in-chief and news editor of the schools newspaper, The Sword and Shield. She will be attending Boston University in the fall.

The Benefits Of Belonging To A Credit Union ASK THE EXPERT

BY NANCY RAPPAPORT, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF PRIORITYONE CREDIT UNION OF FLORIDA

H

ave you ever wondered about the differences between credit unions and banks?   First, let’s start with their similarities. For example, credit unions and banks both accept deposits and withdrawals, while providing loans and a variety of checking and savings accounts. But credit unions have one very significant and noteworthy difference. Unlike banks, credit unions are not-for-profit, cooperative institutions. Unlike banks, which are owned by groups of stockholders and operated by a paid board of directors for the benefit of the stockholders, credit unions are owned by their members and operated by a volunteer board of directors for the benefit of the members. As cooperative financial institutions, credit unions are owned and operated by the very people who use the services. Each credit union’s charter defines its “field of membership.” This designates who can join. Because of that membership requirement, all members of a particular credit union are united by a common bond. As such, they share something in common: where they live or work, or their association with a recognized group or organization. Once someone qualifies for membership, often family members may join also. Since credit unions are not-for-profit associations, profits are returned to the members in the form of lower loan rates, higher savings and checking rates, and many free or discounted services. What do you have to do to join a credit union? While the actual requirements vary from credit union to credit union, some sort of action is required to designate

you as a member. Often, it’s as simple as making a small deposit such as $5.00 that acts as your “share” of ownership in their institution. Think of it as your share of “stock” in the business (after all, you are the owner). And, because of the democratic characteristics of a credit union, all members have an equal voice in the way the organization functions. Credit unions represent a different type of financial institution, as they believe fair and equitable financial service is vital to the well-being and stability of the average, ordinary United States citizen. Some of the most popular services available through credit unions are savings and checking accounts, home mortgage loans, IRA accounts, vehicle and personal loans. Research reflects that credit unions characteristically provide the finest financial assistance at reduced rates and with fewer finance fees on loans while offering their members higher rates on savings and checking accounts. So if you’re a member and your friends and family are eligible for membership, let them in on one of your best secrets. A credit union is the best place to, well, bank. Because credit unions consistently endeavor to provide the very best and most economical financial services possible to their most valuable, and indeed priceless, asset – their credit union members. How to Define Income?

I

n a Dissolution of Marriage, the couple’s finances are usually the main issue in the case. Finances are considered in determining the division of assets and liabilities (equitable distribution), child support and alimony. In most instances, determining a spouse’s income is not very difficult. Tax returns, w-2’s and pay stubs can assist in determining a person’s yearly income. Not everyone, however, is a salaried employee who gets paid on either a yearly salary or standard 40 hour work week. There are many people who work on commission or have a large part of their income paid in either quarterly or yearly bonuses. Are these bonuses income? How do we determine income when a bonus is not guaranteed or a commissioned sales person cannot predict how his year will be? In determining child support, each parent’s income must be considered to calculate the monthly support. It cannot be recalculated each month depending on an individual’s income which may vary based on sales totals or bonuses. Income is actually defined by Florida Statutes as follows: ▸▸ Salary or wages ▸▸ Bonuses, commissions, allowances, overtime, tips, and other similar payments ▸▸ Business income from sources such as self-employment, partnership, close corporations, and independent contracts (“Business income” means gross receipts minus ordinary and necessary expenses required to produce income.) ▸▸ Disability benefits ▸▸ All workers’ compensation benefits and settlements ▸▸ Reemployment assistance or unemployment compensation ▸▸ Pension, retirement, or annuity payments ▸▸ Social security benefits ▸▸ Spousal support received from a previous marriage or court ordered in the marriage before the court ▸▸ Interest and dividends ▸▸ Rental income, which is gross receipts minus ordinary and necessary expenses required to produce the income ▸▸ Income from royalties, trusts, or estates ▸▸ Reimbursed expenses or in kind payments to the extent that they reduce living expenses ▸▸ Gains derived from dealings in property, unless the gain is nonrecurring The above clearly shows that income is not just what a person may bring home each week in a check. Car allowances, for instance, would be considered reimbursed expenses or in kind payments, which must be considered as income. I am often asked whether overtime (again never guaranteed) is income. The answer is “yes” and it will be considered when determining child support. Of course, if overtime is no longer available because of economic conditions than it should be considered as well. A voluntary reduction in income, such as refusing overtime when it is available, is not permitted and such a reduction will not be considered. In addition, a person cannot voluntarily reduce his/her income by changing jobs and expect to be able to either reduce or increase a child support or alimony obligation. If someone is “underemployed,” additional income may be imputed by the courts. Of course, sometimes a reduction in income can occur due to circumstances beyond the individual’s control. Once again, if you have any questions I suggest you contact an experienced family law attorney for the answers. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

s cool weather once again becomes a distant memory, Floridians everywhere will be ramping up their activities in and around the water. It is the ideal time to build water-safe habits with your family – habits to be practiced year-round. Broward County has 128,830 swimming pools, with over 5,200 of them being within the City of Sunrise. Broward also has 23 miles of coastal beaches, 165 miles of intra-coastal waterways, countless ponds, lakes, spas, above-ground and portable pools. This water-logged landscape demands our constant vigilance – particularly where children are concerned. In Broward, drowning is the leading cause of death in children before the age of four. While the importance of teaching children to swim cannot be overstated, most children who fall victim to drowning were never intended to be in the water. Instead, they wander away from a distracted caretaker and into an unsupervised area with water. Thus, parents must continually employ multiple layers of protection, including: ▸▸ Supervision - Always have a designated, responsible adult whose undivided attention is on the children – not only when swimming, but whenever access to water is a possibility. Children must be taught from an early age never to go near the water without an adult. ▸▸ Barriers – Use child-proof locks on all doors, door alarms, pool fences, and self-closing and self-latching gates. ▸▸ Preparation - Learn CPR and keep proper safety gear, including a phone, life-vests, hook, & ring buoy, near the pool. If a child is missing, always check the pool first. ▸▸ Swimming and Water Safety Lessons – Even the youngest children can learn skills to help them to be safer in and around the water. Caregivers should learn to swim as well.

“Merlin and Max”

Merlin and Max are two miniature brindle dachshund boys. They are brothers and just turned three! Their favorite people are their mom & dad! They love to run in the yard and go for golf cart rides. They don’t like it when the phone rings or fireworks! Their favorite toy is a tennis ball or something with a good squeaker in it. They were last seen laying by the pool and soaking up the Florida sun!!

Luckily, there are now numerous, inexpensive options for swimming and water-safety lessons. The City of Sunrise offers free and low-cost swim lessons to residents; visit www.sunrisefl.gov or call 954-747-4600 for more information. Free swim lessons are also available through the YMCA of Broward County SPLASH program; visit www.ymcabroward.org or call 954-334-9622. Additionally, Broward County’s SWIM Central program offers $40 vouchers towards swim lessons for children four years of age and under. Go to www. watersmartbroward.org to request a voucher, where you will also find a wealth of information and resources for all things related to water-safety. Please remember that while swimming lessons are an essential part of drowning prevention, there is no substitute for active adult supervision - especially for small children.
