Many Head and Neck Cancers Are Preventable, Treatable Cancers of the head and neck are a major health problem, with human papilloma virus associated head and neck cancers reaching epidemic proportions. More than 400,000 John Greskovich Jr., MD patients are Cleveland Clinic Florida diagnosed with Radiation Oncologist cancer of the tongue and tonsils worldwide each year. These types of cancers can affect a number of body parts, including oral

or nasal cavities, the sinuses, voice box, throat, salivary glands, lymph nodes, tonsils and tongue. The good news is that most head and neck cancers are very preventable, as a high percentage is tied to tobacco use. You can reduce your risk by not using tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco. Alcohol use is also a contributing factor, so it is important to consume in moderation. Over recent years there has been a growing number in cases of tongue and tonsil cancer

associated with the human papilloma virus (HPV). Therefore, we recommend vaccinating boys and girls, typically between the ages of 9 and 14, with the HPV vaccine. Vaccination to protect against HPV infection involves a series of three shots. Symptoms Patients who should be evaluated for head and neck cancers include those who have the following symptoms, especially if present for a week or two: • hoarseness • ear pain • sore throat • difficulty swallowing foods • sores in the mouth • sudden onset of dentures not fitting • foul-smelling breath Treatment Options If you are diagnosed with a head or neck cancer, it is important to get opinions from a head and neck surgeon, a radiation oncologist, as well as a medical oncologist, who specialize in treatments for head and neck cancer. For certain cancers, surgery might be the best treatment, but for others, radiation with or without chemotherapy is better. The collaborative model of medicine practiced at Cleveland Clinic Florida, allows patients the opportunity to be seen by all necessary specialists on the same day, in one location. Physicians work as a team to develop an individualized treatment plan with the best course of action for you. For local-regionally advanced, HPVassociated tonsil or tongue cancer, Cleveland Clinic has reported cure rates in the 90 percent range. Cure rates for other head and neck tumors depend on the site and stage of the disease.

July 4th Parade Participants Wanted

N

ow is your chance to sign up and be a part of Plantation ’ s

July 4th festivities. The City is looking for local businesses, groups, individuals and organizations to participate in this year’s Independence Day Parade on Saturday, July 4th. Everyone is encouraged to get involved. There is no fee to enter the parade, according to Cheryl Greenberg, publicity coordinator for the City, however, interested parties must complete an application by June 19th. Then, all that’s left to do is decorate! “Those interested in applying must let the city know what sort of entry they will have,” said Greenberg. “Groups often decorate floats, however lots of families and individuals enjoy walking the parade route.” The city does not supply signage or modes of transportation. The parade begins at the corner of Broward Boulevard and N.W. 46th Avenue and is approximately two hours long. The parade ends at Plantation City Hall with an awards ceremony. Anyone who is interested should go to www.plantation.org and click on the events page to access an application that can be printed or call 954-452-2506. The city’s July 4th festivities won’t end after the parade. There will also be a free concert in Central Park and an amazing fireworks display will follow. “The concert, which starts at 7:00 p.m. at the north end of Central Park will feature one of Florida’s top variety bands. Residents are encouraged to bring along a picnic dinner, lawn chairs or a blanket. A grand fireworks display, often called one of the best pyrotechnic shows in Broward, will light up the sky at 9:00 p.m. To ensure the safety of residents and others the City is asking attendees to refrain from using fireworks, sparklers and alcoholic beverages within the park. According to Greenberg. the event historically attracts thousands of people and parking is limited. “We advise residents to arrive early, carpool with friends and if you live close enough walk or ride your bike,” she said. For more information call 954-452-2510.

Police Dogs Receive Protective K-9 Vests Thanks to the Generosity of the Plantation Acres Women’s Club BY JILL SHARPE

T

he Plantation Acres Women ’ s Club (PAWC) presented two Kevlar vests to the K-9 unit of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) at the club’s meeting on March 12th at the Volunteer Park Community Center. The group worked in conjunction with Protect the Paws, A K-9 Cause to raise the money needed to purchase the vests for police dogs Ammo and Deano. Four members of the BCSO, along with the two dogs, came to the meeting to express their gratitude. “It’s another layer of protection for our police dogs,” said Lieutenant Dennis Additon, who has been with the K-9 unit since 1998. “Some of the vests we have are very old and they only have a certain shelf life. These donations mean a lot to the dogs on our criminal apprehension patrol.” The vests are designed to be worn in aggressive building searches and contain a pocket that can hold a cold pack to help the dogs cope with the South Florida weather. Philanthropy like this is a key part of the PAWC’s mission,” said Linda Buchanan, the organization’s President. “We’re a small, wonderful group of women who do great things for the community. We get together and raise funds for several different charities and we plan a lot of events for the community.” Deputy Davis Acevedo brought his partner Deano,

a three-year-old Malinois, or Belgian Shepherd Dog. The pair has worked together for two years. Deputy Wayne Potvin is the handler for Ammo, a four year old Czech Shepherd. The BCSO has 17 people and 49 dogs in their K-9 unit that work on explosive detection, missing persons, and narcotics. Some of their dogs work on explosive detection at the airport ,while others are assigned to the jail facilities to sniff out contraband like cell phones and narcotics. Lt Additon explained that police dogs and their handlers go through a 480hour, 3-month long training academy together. The dogs typically work for the sheriff’s office for about nine years. Deputy Davis Acevedo and Deano Deputy Wayne Potvin and Ammo “We spend more time with our dogs than with our family,” said Lt. Plantation Fire Department Receives Donation from Firehouse Subs Foundation BY JILL SHARPE

T

he Plantation Fire D epartment recently received a grant

from Firehouse Subs Foundation which helped fund the purchase of a LUCAS CPR compression device. The device will be used by Plantation paramedics. “This grant came directly from the nickels and dimes that people drop into the buckets at our Firehouse Sub locations,” said Jaqueline Gubbins as she presented the grant to the Plantation Fire Department. A second grant was presented to

Davie Fire Rescue which went toward the purchase of a fire extinguisher training prop for public education purposes. During the program, held at the Firehouse Sub store on Stirling Road and University Drive, both agencies thanked the Foundation for their support and demonstrated the devices. “This is Public/ Private partnership at its best,” said Plantation Fire Chief Laney Stearns. This grant will directly help save lives. “The American Heart Association tells us that uninterrupted CPR compressions is the best technique for saving a life. The Lucas device does that.” Several years ago, Plantation’s Rescue Division trialed a LUCAS device with tremendous success. “Our numbers tell the story,” said Stearns. Firehouse Subs Foundation and the people who eat at their restaurants are truly contributing to saving lives in Plantation.

home estimates, and Installation services. We also guide our customers who wish to install their own laminate floors through the process and will answer any question or concern at any time regardless of our business hours.

f you are in the market for new

flooring but need some help deciding what the best options are, look no further than Floor Solutions Group. Sales Manager Carlos Almandoz has more than 15 years experience in remodeling with an expertise in flooring installation and bathroom renovations. He knows what works well and what doesn’t work. As a retired flooring renovation specialist, Almandoz has joined with six family members including his daughter Carla to bring the best flooring options to you. Carla recently answered some questions about the newly formed family business.

How have flooring options changed over the years? Over

How long have you been in business and how did you get started?

Our office and showroom have been open since January 2014. One day my cousin Jose decided to tell my father Carlos, that his years of professional installation experience was valuable and worthy of something more. He then went on to convince my father, his uncle, that it was the time in his career to open up a flooring materials store. At the time, Jose was finishing up his Masters at NSU and as his career was in Business Administration he knew that we had a lot to offer to this industry and its customers. As the idea grew, more and more customers and friends convinced my father that opening up a store was a great idea. It was also perfect timing for me too as I was just about to graduate from Florida State with a degree in Marketing. We knew it was the perfect opportunity and time to get this business rolling for our family.

What differentiates Floor Solutions Group from other flooring stores? Because my

father Carlos has been in the business for quite some time now, he knew exactly what materials to use and which ones to stay away from. Here at Floor Solutions we pride ourselves in our high quality materials as we want all of our customers to have the very best the industry has to offer. We also have a team of subcontracted installers whose workmanship, honesty, and skill are amongst the best we have yet to see. We have had so many customers come to us with terrible stories of their past installers. Its quite sad how many in this business take advantage of their clients. We are not happy until you walk away 100% satisfied with the materials and job we have performed. If you ever have a problem, we will respond at any time of the day any day. For that reason, we use flooring materials that will make your home, office, or commercial store a true masterpiece.

How many members of the family work in the business? Currently there are seven family members working at Floor Solutions Group.

What can customers expect when they visit your store? We are a

family owned and operated business. The service that we give to our clients is that of a family friend or relative. Our showroom is small compared to other flooring materials stores but we designed it that way because we wanted a more personalized, cozy feeling when you walked into our showroom. We also understood the pains of going into a flooring store and seeing so many options. It can truly drive a homeowner crazy. For many homeowners choosing the right materials for their home is crucial. We wanted to make that experience feel like it should, personable and important. Come sit down, drink some coffee, and have a chat with us on what it is that your family needs. You will be surprised to know that you will walk in a customer and leave a friend. That is our goal.

the past few years we have seen Hardwood turn to Laminate floors and Ceramic into Porcelain tile, 12 X12 ft tiles into 6 X 36 ft tiles, and traditional styles into modern designs. Right now the bigger the better. Flooring has moved away from the square look to an elongated rectangular look that is more sleek and modern. Customers in Florida are also very fond of the Laminate flooring as it is more affordable and less tedious than Hardwood. Lately, 6 X 36 porcelain tiles has become the popular choice for those looking for the wood touch without the hardwood issues. With porcelain tiles you don’t have to worry about your wood absorbing moisture and expanding and you can still have that cozy warm feel that is given by natural wood and laminates.

Plantation Man’s Adaptive Tennis Program Earns Him a Well-Deserved Community Service Award BY JILL SHARPE

A

Plantation resident was recently recognized for his efforts to make sure local athletes in wheelchairs can enjoy the game of tennis just like everyone else. Mark Morgenstern was recently named as an outstanding citizen who represents the “Heart of South Florida” by WPLG Local 10 ABC News. The tennis enthusiast was one of 10 people to be chosen for having a positive impact on the lives of others. “I was so excited, not for myself, but for the whole program.” said Morgenstern. “It’s great to see something start with one idea, see it grow and see it get recognized and turn into something that so many people love. People who use wheelchairs are tennis players just like you and me. They just happen to use wheelchairs to enjoy the camaraderie of the game and the game itself.” The honor came as something of a Mark Morgenstern surprise for the man of the hour. “My wife saw the ads for the ‘Heart of South Florida’ awards and said that she wanted to send my name in,” said Morgenstern. “I thought that this would never happen, but she sent in the application on a Monday, and when I got home later that afternoon, someone from the TV station called to say that I won. I was floored. It’s such a good cause for good people having good fun.” Wheelchair tennis wasn’t Morgenstern’s first community service venture. As a military veteran, he was inspired by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden when they challenged the public in 2011 to volunteer their time to help veterans. Morgenstern was semi-retired and convinced the Frank Veltri Tennis Center in Plantation to provide tennis camps for the children of active duty military families. Armed Forces families where a parent is on active duty or is currently deployed have access to a free summer and winter camp and every spot at the camps is usually filled quickly. Fresh off the success of the military tennis program, Morgenstern set his sights on helping his friends in wheelchairs. He recalled seeing wheelchair tennis at the Lipton Tennis Championships (now the Miami Open) but noted that the Veltri Center lacked wheelchairs adapted for those athletes. In addition to specialized equipment, people who use a wheelchair to play tennis get two bounces to return a volley, as opposed to the traditional one bounce. Morgenstern arranged a

16

meeting with Bruce Karr, who plays with a wheelchair tennis group at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton. The Boca group holds free wheelchair tennis clinics every week, in addition to hosting the South Florida Open Wheelchair Championships. Karr and his friends came to the Veltri Center and put on a wheelchair tennis exhibition, but the attendance was not what Morgenstern had hoped for. “I went to hospitals and rehabilitation centers and everywhere I could think of to spread the word,” he said. “When no one showed up for the exhibition, though, I was heartbroken.” Morgenstern only used that temporary setback as motivation. He contacted the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to inquire about assistance in making tennis more accessible. The USTA was very supportive and encouraged Morgenstern to apply for one of their grants. Having never written a grant before, Morgenstern had help from the Veltri Center and used information from a wheelchair manufacturer, Top End Wheelchairs in Pinellas Park, to finalize all of the financial data. His grant application asked for $18,000 to purchase four adult and two children’s wheelchairs. The USTA not only fulfilled his entire request but gave an additional $5,000 to pay for equipment, tennis balls, court time and training with licensed coaches. Momentum has been building for wheelchair tennis to the point that Morgenstern has been planning to hold a wheelchair tournament at the Veltri Center. Other local tennis centers like George English Park in Fort Lauderdale are also applying for grants to expand their accessibility, a move that makes Morgenstern very happy. “It’s wonderful to see,” he said. “You can use wheelchairs to play in every tennis venue in the world, whether its clay, grass, concrete or anything else. Your sneakers beat up the court more than the wheelchairs do.” The Plantation Adaptive Tennis Program is family-friendly, everyone gets to play and the equipment is free. The program hosts free wheelchair tennis clinics on the first and third Thursday of every month at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center. The Veltri Center, located at 9101 NW 2nd Street, is part of Plantation Central Park. For more information, call 954.513.3540 or visit on-line at www. pctc.plantationtennis. org.

CAN DO KID

Plantation Teen Excels in Engineering and Filmmaking BY JILL SHARPE

P

lantation teen Ari D esler will soon head off to college

with an impressive resume already started in Engineering and Filmmaking. As captain of the robotics team at University School of NSU, Desler has been a driving force behind the team since he became a robot driver in 9th grade. After learning the ropes, Desler advanced to head engineer in 10th grade and since then, he has enjoyed a leadership role on the topranked team. During the world championship last year, which was held in Anaheim, California, Desler said his skills were put to the test and he rose to the challenge. “There was lots of pressure as our team had to bounce back from mechanical issues when our robot arm broke,” said Desler. “I learned how to work with people and to think outside of the box.” The University School Sun Robotics team (USSR) placed 53rd out of 470 in the prestigious competition last

year. This year, the team continues to come out on top, winning three tournaments, earning a “Best Design” award and most recently earning first place in the state at the Florida Vex Robotics Competition for High Schools. At the same time he is earning accolades in robotics, Desler is making a name for himself in Film and TV Production, which is his other passion. He started taking film in 9th grade and his 10th grade TV Production class taught him the fundamentals and really sparked his interest leading him to live direct the Winter band show and the Tarzan concert at his school. During that time, he created an animated music video on YouTube, which went viral. The video currently has 5,700,000 views. That first successful effort gave him the confidence to make another video which garnered over 2 million views. Desler said YouTube pays him for views, which changed his perspective on Film and TV production. “I thought maybe this could be a career,” Desler said. Indeed his filmmaking talent has already been acknowledged this year as he won third place in the Jim Harbin Awards state competition and earned the bronze medal at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival for his documentary on the USchool crew team. Desler said he’s even managed to combine his filmmaking and engineering passions by creating a documentary recently about Robotics. “I just like succeeding in both,” he said.

South Plantation High School Students Remove Invasive Plants at Local Park BY JILL SHARPE

O

ver the course of three Saturdays in January, about 150

students from South Plantation High School’s (SPHS) environmental science magnet program took out invasive Rosary Pea and Grapevine plants from the Pinelands Trail at Miramar Pineland Park. Rosary Peas originated in South America and their poisonous red and black berries lead to fast-growing vines that wrap around native plants, block them from getting sunlight and choke them. “It’s a never-ending battle,” said Rich Newman, a Park Manager. “But we’re one of the counties’ natural areas and we want to keep it native.” The SPHS students spent their time and effort collecting well over 100 bags of invasive plants. In addition to the environmental benefits of their work, any group that pulls up 100 bags or more of invasives receives a certificate of appreciation and the free use of a park pavilion for a party. “Our students needed to do some service learning about South Florida’s ecosystems and the impact we can have on them,” said Jessica Brown, an Advanced Placement environmental science teacher at SPHS. “The students really liked the park and making a difference there. They’ve even talked about getting a group of them together to volunteer on their own and go back to the park.” The park opened in March 2013 but has already faced many of the same prob-

lems with non-native species as other nearby green spaces. “Some non-native plants out-grow and out-reproduce the native species since they have no natural enemies here,” said Terri Ward, a Park Aides. While invasives remain a problem, park staff view volunteers and groups like the SPHS students, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts as a key part of the solution. “The 100 Bags challenge is really exciting for us,” Ward said. “This is a wonderful opportunity for high school students to learn about the plants and the park’s history. They SPHS students were very well-prepared, had a great deal of energy and enthusiasm, a good knowledge base and worked well together.” Ward noted that all the work that staff and volunteers perform around the park ensure that everyone can enjoy this unique treasure. “We’re hoping to have groups come out for the 100 Bags of Invasives Challenge again in the fall so that more students can experience the park, help us celebrate the county’s 100th anniversary and have nature be a big part of that celebration,” said Ward. Miramar Pineland Park is located at 3600 South University Drive. Individuals or groups who would like to earn volunteer hours by assisting the park can call 954-357-8776 or go online to http://www. broward.org/parks/miramarpineland.

South Plantation High School Seniors Receive Recognition For Their Leadership BY MARISSA STEINBERG, STUDENT WRITER

A

s if maintaining exceptional grades , filling out college

applications, and attending school on a daily basis isn’t enough, many students are thoroughly involved in extra curricular activities that they feel attached to and hold notable leadership positions in. Every year, schools across Broward County recognize students who have shown immense leadership qualities, and have contributed to their school or community. At South Plantation, four students were recognized for the hard work they have completed throughout high school and are being known as “Outstanding Senior Leaders.” In the 2015 graduating class, the awarded seniors are Leigh Bouskila, Aubrey Burton, Afsana Khan, and Tamir Rabinovich. Amongst these four students, they have completed a plethora of exceptional activities, and made a known mark, amongst South Plantation’s faculty and peers. Leigh Bouskila is currently involved in DECA, an association of business and marketing students and serves as an executive officer, and chapter historian. She holds the positions of Chapter President for the National Honor Society, the head of water testing for Everglades Restoration Ambassadors, the Fair Child Challenge Coordinator at South Plantation; in the Friends of Israel Scouts she is the head of upper level counselors, and the new scout trainer, along with being the Prom committee president. “I was honored to be awarded as an outstanding leader. I realized how hard it was to maintain my grades, but after being recognized it was so worth it. This award is something I will cherish forever.” Bouskila plans to remain active within her leadership activities throughout her collegiate experience as she feels it is a part of her. In the future she hopes to become an environmental engineer, and work out ways to improve our ecofriendly technology, and leave a positive mark on the world. Aubrey Burton is the editor-in-chief of South Plantations yearbook, the girl’s volleyball team captain, the boys volleyball manager, and the baseball statistician. “Winning this award was very meaningful to me as there are so many different leaders at our school. Being chosen amongst the bunch, reminds me that all of my hard work has paid off.” Burton, an advocate for leadership, believes that taking charge is very important and that everyone must have a part of them that allows him or her to take charge, and be able to show off what they do best. Throughout her collegiate experience, she hopes to get a degree in Journalism, and become a news broadcaster. Afsana Khan is the Student Government Association President, serving as the only junior president in 12 years, and the only president to ever serve two years, the chair of Knights, the chair of elections, the chair of service, the chair of the Homecoming Dance, Key Club president, SHAPE member, and a National Honor Society member. “It was very validating and great to receive recognition for all of my hard work. I was very grateful and humbled to receive this prestigious award. My parents were really proud of me, and that meant a lot.” As graduation is approaching, Khan hopes to have made an impact on at least one person at our school, in hopes they will become a leader for themselves. In the future, she would love to work in law or government while helping the less fortunate and people in our society. Tamir Rabinovich holds the position of Florida DECA president, and in 2014 Florida DECA Vice President, the President of the Class of 2015, sophomore year, National Honor Society Parliamentarian, South Plantations DECA executive officer, and marketing 1&2 President. “It was humbling to be awarded by my school for this award. I was honored to be recognized by the county for my leadership positions.” Rabinovich definitely wants to continue his leadership skills in college, and hopes to get a Master of Business Administration, and become a successful entrepreneur. HOAs and Condo Associations Must Implement Safeguards to Prevent Election Fraud By Gary M. Mars

A

recent case in L as Vegas has set a new

bar for the heights to which criminals will go in their efforts to defraud condo associations and HOAs for contracts worth millions of dollars. A U.S. Justice Department investigation revealed that eleven homeowners and condominium associations in Las Vegas were defrauded of millions of dollars in a board of directors takeover scheme that took place from 2003 to 2009. Federal prosecutors are seeking jail time for the defendants in addition to approximately $25 million in restitution, and 37 defendants have taken plea agreements and are facing prison sentences while the remaining four defendants are awaiting trial. The defendants are accused of getting their straw unit buyers elected to community associations’ boards of directors through forgery, bribery, ballot stuffing and dirty tricks, all with the help of a Kung Fu grandmaster to intimidate wary board members. As disclosed under his plea agreement, this martial arts expert admitted that the conspirators would rig the associations’ board of director elections by using stolen and forged ballots so that they could win a majority voting control of the boards in order to secure lucrative contracts once control of the board and association was obtained. Co-conspirators traveled to Mexico to print phony ballots, used the master key at a condominium complex in order to remove ballots from mailboxes, and retrieved discarded ballots from a condominium’s dumpsters. Community association boards control the purse strings of the communities that they govern, and they have been long-standing targets for unscrupulous board members. For those who own residences in condo and HOA communities, this board takeover scheme underscores the level of involvement and vigilance that is necessary in order to help ensure that their community associations avoid this type of fraud. Unit owners should make every effort to vote in all elections and submit their own ballots, as fraudsters will typically attempt to secure and utilize forged ballots from those who do not normally vote in the elections. They should also attend the election meeting and determine whether their ballot was counted or disallowed due to the submission of more than one ballot for their unit. If association members believe that the integrity of their board of directors has been compromised, they should consult with highly experienced legal counsel in order to discuss and determine their next steps. Election recalls, court appointed receivers, and injunctions precluding boards from awarding contracts are among the measures that can be pursued, and criminal investigations by state and federal law enforcement are also possibilities that can come into play. Partner Gary M. Mars with the South Florida law firm of Siegfried, Rivera, Hyman, Lerner, De La Torre, Mars & Sobel has focused on community association law since 1991. He has lectured extensively on a variety of topics involving community association operations, legislation and legal rulings, and he has been designated as a facilitator for educational programs by the state’s Division of Condominiums. egenerative medicine is a revolution -

ary approach to treating many degenerative conditions and features a variety of different techniques including stem cell therapy. This field holds the realistic promise of repairing damaged tissue by harnessing the body’s ability to heal itself. The following is a guide for patients interested in safe and efficacious treatments. Adult stem cells are found in every part of the body and their primary role is to heal and maintain the tissue with which they reside. Adult stem cells can be harvested from a patient’s own tissue. Stem cells derived from a patient’s own fat are referred to as adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs). These cells are multi-potential in that they have the ability to differentiate into a variety of different types of tissue including but not limited to bone, cartilage, muscle, ligament, tendon and fat. They have also been shown to express a variety of different growth factors and signaling molecules (cytokines). Based on research performed in our FDA certified laboratories, stem cell quality and functionality can vary greatly depending on the methods utilized to obtain the cells. It is important to utilize a product that has undergone full characterization to include safety, identity, purity and potency. We have developed and validated a method for harvesting and isolating stem cells from fat for therapeutic use. Early results are promising for the studies we have conducted for a variety of conditions including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), osteoarthritis and critical limb ischemia. Outcome measurements for the COPD study include safety, exercise capability, and quality of life assessment. Patients have demonstrated on average an increase of 174 meters in a six-minute walk test when compared to baseline at three months. These results are further substantiated by positive patient testimonial and 83% statistically significant improvement in quality of life. Because adipose cells have a natural ability to create new blood vessels, they are the perfect therapy for ischemic tissue. Critical limb ischemia is a condition where the blood supply is compromised to the lower limbs, causing tissue death and often amputation. Hundreds of patients have been successfully treated with adipose-derived stem cells for limb ischemia with end results being limb salvage due to increased blood flow to the area. In the area of regenerative orthopedics, the treatment technique involves using adipose-derived stem cells combined with platelet rich plasma (PRP). This treatment is appropriate for patients with degenerative orthopedic conditions and musculoskeletal injuries. Stem cells possess enormous regenerative potential. Adipose stem cells can be obtained from the patient easily, abundantly, and with minimal patient discomfort. The potential applications are virtually limitless. Current applications include orthopedic conditions (tendon/ligament injuries, osteoarthritis, etc.), degenerative conditions (COPD, diabetes), neurological (MS, Parkinson’s, spinal cord injuries, autism, etc.) and auto-immune (RA, Crohn’s, colitis, lupus). Kristin Comella received her Master of Science from Ohio State University and has been a leading stem cell scientist since 1998. She is currently the Chief Science Officer for Bioheart Inc. and US Stem Cell Clinic, located in Sunrise. For additional information, contact info@usstemcellclinic.com or (954) 510-3150.

Get to Know Your Local Credit Union By Nancy Rappaport, President and CEO of PriorityONE Credit Union of Florida

L

ooking for the best checking account rates?

How about lowering your car payment? This is a great time to get to know your local credit unions. Let’s get a fresh cup of coffee and discuss the credit union difference… What makes a credit union different from other financial institutions? Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives, owned and operated by their members. Earnings are returned to the members in the form of lower loan rates, higher interest rates on deposits and lower fees. Credit unions are also governed by a volunteer Board of Directors elected by and from the credit union’s membership. Recent changes in federal laws and regulations have made credit unions even stronger. Research shows that credit unions remain extremely popular for over 85 million Americans. An annual consumer survey completed by The American Banker, an independent publisher, confirmed that credit unions have been the favorite among consumers since 1983. How can I become a credit union member? Many people believe they are not eligible to join a credit union…..not so! By current federal statute, credit unions cannot serve the general public. However, many credit unions allow you to become a member based on qualifications such as, live or work in Broward County, your employer, Professional, Postal or Federal Employee. Please call your local credit union to find out how you can qualify to become a member. Once you become a member you will always be a member,

even if you move away. Is my money safe in a credit union? Credit unions like other financial institutions are closely regulated. The National Credit Union Administration, an agency of the federal government, insures deposits of credit union members up to $250,000.00. Credit Unions seem to have limited locations… Over 5,005 credit unions around the country share locations to give members convenient access to their accounts. This service is called Shared Services. Just go to the website, locate shared services, enter the zip code of where you are and the addresses of the locations closest to you will appear. Technology? Credit Union members can manage their accounts anytime and anywhere through Mobile Banking, Bill Pay, Online Banking, Direct Deposit and Zip-24, an audio response system. If you prefer personal assistance with your finances, credit unions continue to offer professional and knowledgeable staff that will be happy to assist you. For more information, please give us a call at 954-335-5100; visit our website at www.priorityonefl.org or stop by one of our branches conveniently located in Sunrise, at 3000 North University Drive; in Fort Lauderdale, at 1900 West Oakland Park Boulevard (in the Post Office building)or Coral Springs at 1700 North University Drive; Suite 100. Fibromyalgia is not a psychological condition. Recent research suggests that changes in the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) may be responsible. As we age, the vertebral joints of the spine begin to degenerate and can press on the roots of the spinal nerves, causing the classic symptoms of fibromyalgia. It can also result from traumatic injuries, infections, diabetes, metabolic problems and exposure to toxins.
