Spring into Summer
T
he days are getting longer and the tropical South Florida heat is with us again. The sun is burning down on us and the air conditioners are humming at full blast. The school year is coming to an end. While we are trying to decide between the pool or beach, our kids are already looking forward to their summer break. In a hurry, we are making last minute arrangements for summer camps and family vacations. Summer is in the air! This May issue of the Our City Magazines features our annual Summer Camp Guide, which showcases the multitude of local summer camps and kids activities offered in your community. For additional camps and activities, please visit our comprehensive online South Broward Summer Camp Guide at www.OurCityMedia.com. In the midst of all this, spring is passing by and Mother’s Day has sneaked up on us. Let’s all take a little pause, reflect on what is important, and honor our mothers (and often our wives), for they are working hard and without pause to care for us, look after us, and pamper us. It’s time to truly pamper and spoil them for a change. Have a fantastic Mother’s Day celebration!

Canstruction Event at Westfield Broward Mall Aims to Put a Lid on Hunger Community news
BY JILL SHARPE
T
he public is invited to come out and see some wildly creative structures all made out of canned goods at Westfield Broward Mall from June 2-5. The second annual Canstruction event, hosted by South Florida nonprofit HOPE
Outreach Center, showcases the talent of local corporate teams who build very large structures with canned goods which are later donated to Broward food pantries. Teams start building at 9 a.m. on June 2nd and the structures are on display for the public to enjoy through Sunday, June 5th. The food is then picked up by local pantries on Monday morning at 8 a.m. “Canstruction has been a great event for Westfield Broward to host,” said Westfield Marketing Director Andrew Martineau. “In addition to being a venue for donating a large quantity of canned food to the Hope Outreach Center, it creates a really unique event for the community to experience while they are at the center. Last year was our first year hosting the event and we received tremendous response from customers and the teams made up of local businesses resulting in over 25,000 cans being donated to the Hope Outreach Center. This year we hope to beat last year’s numbers,” Martineau said. According to Helen Shinners, Executive Director of HOPE Outreach Center, the event is well timed as it not
only coincides with Hunger Awareness Month but also shores up the pantries for the summer months when food pantry donations typically diminish and demands intensify. “We look forward to providing local food pantries with muchneed food and we look forward to seeing imagination at work,” Shinners said. “When we launched this event last year, we saw how innovative teams can be.” Some of the local companies already registered to participate include: Memorial Healthcare Systems, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Ultimate Software, Students at the American Institute of Architects, Walker & Dunlop, Allison James Estates and Homes HOPE Outreach Center has a small staff but a large volunteer force, who serve approximately 100 families per week. HOPE Outreach touches the lives of over 6,000 adults and children living in our community annually. For more information, call 954-321-0909 or visit www. hopeoutreachfl.org/events/ canstruction.html.

Plantation Seniors Soar South Florida’s Skies on Dream Flights
I
BY JILL SHARPE
Community News
t’s been decades since 86-year-old Korean War veteran Al Bunker strapped on a headset and took to the Florida skies. So he jumped at the chance to take a 15-minute Dream Flight in a Boeing Stearman biplane, the same aircraft used to train aviators during World War II, and similar to the aircraft he used to fly professionally when he was spotting fish off the Florida coast, towing banners and crop dusting. Upon landing, he said, “It felt like home up there.” Bunker was one of four Covenant Village of Florida residents who spent the day on March 15th at North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines, each taking a turn flying in the open-cockpit biplane. The flights were offered by non-profit Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation and coordinated with the continuing care retirement community in Plantation as a way of honoring the men for their military service. The foundation, founded by Darryl Fisher in 2011 to honor U.S. military veterans living in long-term care facilities, has provided 1,500 Dream Flights to veterans nationwide. In addition to Bunker, other Dream Flight participants included 97-year-old World War II veteran John “JJ” Schmid; 85-year-old Korean War veteran Vince Wilson; and 76-year-old Walt Wesner, who served in the U.S Air Force. Residents’ friends, family members and Covenant Village staff were on hand to celebrate their flights and their service. When asked if he would do it again, Vincent Wilson said he would but wasn’t sure if his wife would let him. “She was happy when I had my feet back on the ground,” said Wilson. “It was thrilling for me but the thought of me going up in a 1942 plane was kind of scary for her.” Schmid said the experience was a reminder of what flying is all about. “You get up in the air and the wind is hitting you like crazy. You appreciate the flying,” he said. “It was also a great chance to show off in front of my family and my great grandchildren.”

Plantation Law Firm Organizes Girl Scout Cookie Collection for the Troops Community news
BY JILL SHARPE
K
elley Kronenberg, a diverse full-service business law firm with offices in Plantation, organized a firm-wide Girl Scout Cookies collection for military troops as part of its ongoing Kelley Kronenberg Cares (KKC) program. KKC was created to provide opportunities for the firm’s attorneys and staff to personally commit to civic and charitable efforts in the cities where the firm’s offices are located. Nicknamed “Operation Cookie,” this is the firm’s third KKC project. Throughout January and February, members of Kelley Kronenberg’s Florida offices competed in an interoffice competition to purchase and collect cookies for our troops overseas. Together, the firm’s office members collected more than 300 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies for donation. Through a partnership with the Girl Scouts of South Florida, the collected cookies were sent to troops overseas. “Kelley Kronenberg’s Operation Cookie initiative is a way for the members of the firm to support our local communities and the Girl Scouts, while sending a little taste of home to our soldiers abroad,” said Howard Wander, Principal Partner and Chief Operating Officer of Kelley Kronenberg. “The courageous men and
women who serve in our military do so much to protect the freedoms we all enjoy. This gesture is one small way to show our appreciation and support to those who work so diligently to protect us.” Wander’s office collected more than 170 boxes of cookies to win the interoffice competition. “We took great pride in collecting so many cookies for donation to our troops,” said Wander. “I know that Girl Scout Cookies are among the most requested items of those serving in our armed forces, and our cookie donation is a meaningful way for us to show that Kelley Kronenberg cares and to say ‘thank you’ to our brave soldiers.” The firm’s previous KKC projects have included a statewide school supplies drive for students as well as a Thanksgiving food drive, in addition to the firm’s regular philanthropic work. “Supporting community and charitable initiatives has always been a priority for our firm. This program allows our attorneys and staff to get involved on a local level and have the opportunity to see the results of their volunteered time and efforts,” said Wander.

University of Miami Law School Alumni Honors Children’s Rights Lawyer Howard Talenfeld BY JILL SHARPE
H
oward M. Talenfeld, a leading Florida foster care abuse attorney and life-long advocate for children’s rights, was honored with the University of Miami Law Alumni Association’s Alumni Achievement Award at its annual Broward County Judicial Reception on March 23rd. Talenfeld, a Plantation resident, graduated from the University of Miami School of Law in 1979 and has spent much of his career defending the rights of and seeking damages for children and the developmentally disabled harmed in cases of child abuse, child sexual abuse, and denial of benefits. “No one sets out on their career in pursuit of such honors, so it’s humbling to be recognized for the work my team and I have done on behalf of the voiceless victims in our community,” said Talenfeld. He has been recognized for his efforts with The Florida Bar’s “President’s Award of Merit” and the Florida Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Award for the 17th Judicial Circuit. This month, Talenfeld will receive the Professional Excellence Award from the Daily Business Review, and was a past recipient of its Most Effective Lawyer award in the Pro Bono category. He also received Legal Aid’s Russell
Carlisle Award for child advocacy law and is the founding president of Florida’s Children First, the state’s preeminent non-profit that advocates for foster children and the developmentally disabled. “Howard was a natural for this award. We’re very proud of his pioneering work for children’s causes,” said Edward R. Shohat, a Miami attorney and president of the Law Alumni Association. “The association represents over 30,000 alumni around the world, and Howard is an excellent ambassador for the school.” “Howard exemplifies the characteristics and qualities that make for a great lawyer,” added Todd S. Payne, past president of the Law Alumni Association and chair of its National Advisory Council. “When you match great lawyering skills with someone who serves others, particularly those less capable of helping themselves, that’s a person deserving of recognition.” Joining Talenfeld in receiving the award were the Hon. Martin J. Bidwill. Past recipients have included the Hon. Stanford Blake, JD ’73; Michael J. Satz, JD ’67; the Hon. John P. “Jack” Seiler, JD ’88; the Hon. Melvin B. Grossman, JD ‘68; and Bruce M. Lyons, JD ’67.

Sunrise Youngster With a Brain Tumor is Given a Dream Trip to California BY JILL SHARPE
T
hanks to the generosity of the Jorge Nation Foundation (JNF), six-year-old Cassidy Lennon who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in January 2014, was able to enjoy a dream trip to California in March. Lennon and her family, who live in Sunrise, are eternally grateful to the organization for giving them the trip as it allowed them to make memories that will last forever. JNF, a South-Florida based 501(c) charitable organization, partners with Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH) to send children from JDCH’s oncology department and their families on allexpense-paid Dream Trips to destinations of their choice. The JNF Board, along with Alabama football player/defensive MVP of the National Championship game Eddie Jackson, surprised Cassidy and her family at JDCH with the unforgettable trip. Jackson grew up in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida and was so excited to give back to his community which helped shape him into the young man and football player he is today. Jackson is playing his senior year in honor of the brave six-year-old. Cassidy, who was been through multiple hospitalizations, surgeries and chemotherapy, remains in good spirits despite now having multiple tumors which are not

responding to treatment. “ We are just trying to keep her positive and happy while we pray for a miracle,” said her mom Carla. Cassidy had always dreamed of visiting Disneyland, Universal and seeing snow at Big Bear. She was able to go on the trip with her mom, her dad Charles, her aunt Jennifer and her 10-year-old cousin Stephanie who is her favorite person in the world. “It was amazing to do something together as a family where Cassidy was able to forget about her condition, her discomfort, illness and what she has gone through. We never have chances or opportunities to take trips like this as a family and in fact the kids had never even travelled on an airplane.” Carla said the family especially enjoyed climbing the mountain, hiking and tubing, as the family had never been in the mountains before and giving Cassidy the opportunity to see and touch snow for the first time. “Cassidy also really enjoyed the roller coasters and rides in the park,” Carla said. “She had the most unbelievable time and especially loved anything that went fast. It just meant so much to be able to have her experience some of the simple things in life she had never experienced before.”

ARC Broward Inspires Local Resident to be His Best BY JILL SHARPE

COMMUNITY NEWS
ive years ago Bobby Curran weighed 500 pounds, had a herniated disk, was dependent on social security and was fed up. He yearned for a more self-sufficient life. That’s when he learned about ARC Broward’s culinary program and decided to make a major change. “I heard about ARC Broward’s Culinary Arts Certificate program on an NPR radio show and thought it sounded like a good idea for me,” Curran said. “I was awarded a full scholarship to the program thanks to a generous grant awarded to ARC Broward by Bank of America.” ARC Broward’s Culinary Arts program provides students a variety of essential skills in order to succeed in a professional kitchen. With hands-on learning in a fully-operational professional catering kitchen, students gain the necessary experience to successfully enter the food service industry in just 15 weeks. Under the supervision of skilled chef instructors, students learn and hone their skills as they prepare both childcare and facility meals. The
working classroom offers students a chance to gain proficiency and confidence in the kitchen, while also learning about nutritional guidelines (USDA and CACEP), safe food practices, and meal planning. “Curran is a great example of the type of people our program seeks to help,” said Dennis Haas, ARC Broward CEO. “We help people develop specific skills so that they are employment ready.” Sandra Juliachs, Bank of America market manager for Broward County, said Curran’s story is inspirational and also perfectly exemplifies why the Bank awards such grants through its Workforce Development and Education Initiative. “We support ARC Broward’s Culinary Program because we are committed to connecting the unemployed and the underemployed to educational opportunities that will help them find better paying jobs,” said Juliachs. “ By connecting nonprofits, communities and individuals to much-needed resources, we can help create a better economic future for us all.
Murder Mystery Writing is More Than a Hobby for Plantation Couple BY JILL SHARPE
P
lantation dermatologist Dr. Garry Gewirtzman has a side-line career that many of his patients know nothing about. Gewirtzman, along with his wife Sheila, are published authors of two highly successful murder mystery novels. The pair, who reside in Plantation, have already seen their books published in Chinese and are hard at work on their third novel. Garry and Sheila, who are in their late sixties, say they have found something that many writers don’t have: support for the dry spells and another creative mind off of which they can bounce ideas. Sheila, a retired accountant and Garry rely on their unique skills to bring different approaches to the story-drafting table. “We have fun working together, which is a testament to our connection as both a married couple and as writing partners,” Garry said. They’ve figured out a system that’s both beneficial and productive for writing their novels: Garry uses his expertise from years in the medical field to craft the storyline that allows their characters to solves crimes, and Sheila comes in and dresses up the language with imagery and brings the story to life. “We consider the final product to be a 50/50 partnership,” Garry said. From writing nonfiction books for his field (Smooth as a Baby’s Bottom: A Dermatologist’s Guide to Your Child’s Skin Care, Skin Sense: A Dermatologist’s Guide to Your Family’s Skin Care, and From Chicken Soup to Oysters: A Doctor’s Guide to Home Remedies) to surprising readers with crime solving, Garry has made a name for himself in publishing across the whole bookstore. Both Garry and Sheila have experience in law enforcement.

Garry was a graduate of the civilian academies of the FBI and DEA and spent time in squad cars. Sheila has been to Quantico and graduated from the civilian academy of the DEA. These crime writers have also participated in a training session with the Fort Lauderdale Police bomb squad. “What better way to gain knowledge about the very thing you’re writing about than to actually participate,” said Garry. Modeling their main characters in their novels Deadly Combo and Deadly Countdown after themselves, Garry and Sheila have achieved much success writing about a dermatologist-accounting crime-solving duo. They have appeared on over 100 television and radio shows to discuss their writing, and they were even fortunate enough to appear in episode 620 of Scrubs. While they work on their third novel in the Cliff Mandich, MD, murder mystery series they continue to come up with even more exciting adventures that will guarantee that their third book will top the first two. “When something is working, you just have to roll with it,” said Garry. For Garry and Sheila Gewritzman, they can manage to live together, play together, and write together without ever tiring of each other. That’s the testament to a true love and literary match! Garry and Sheila Gewirtzman’s novels are available as soft cover, hardcover, Kindle and Nook from Amazon or Barnes and Noble.
Body contouring: Show off the new you. Have you lost a significant amount of weight but are still dealing with loose skin? A series of plastic surgeries called body contouring S. Alexander Earle, MD can help trim excess skin from several places on your body.
Dr. Earle discusses different areas of the body where body contouring may help.
Sometimes people believe removing extra skin after bariatric surgery or significant weight loss is a purely cosmetic procedure. But in many cases it also has a practical health purpose.
• Chest: Men and women may require breast surgery to remove extra skin from the chest. “For women, the procedure is similar to a breast lift. This may be combined with implants, if needed. For men, the plastic surgeon performs a male breast reduction procedure,” explains Dr. Earle, who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
“Body contouring can be done after weight loss to prevent rashes, discomfort and chafing,” says S. Alexander Earle, MD, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Cleveland Clinic Florida.
• Abdomen: Extra skin can be removed and muscles tightened with abdominoplasty. This makes the entire stomach area look better and tighter. • Thighs: A plastic surgeon can remove extra skin on thighs – depending on how heavy the thigh still is and the anatomic location of the skin.
• Upper arms: Patients often complain of deflated arms that resemble batwings.
Let us direct you to the best care. Access. Anytime. Anywhere.
Removing excess skin from the armpit to the elbow gives the upper arms their shape back. • Face: Stretched out skin along the neck and jawline can be removed to reveal a more healthy and youthful appearance. Body contouring is an efficient way to get rid of excess skin after your weight loss. “It can help eliminate imperfections and loose skin that diet and exercise can’t,” says Dr. Earle. Note: Not all procedures are covered by insurance. This depends on the location of the excess skin, your symptoms, and your insurance coverage.

More than 5,000 Students Participate in the Above the Influence March and Rally SECTION NEWS school HEAD
BY JILL SHARPE
O
n Friday, March 11th, more than 5,000 Broward County students, representing more than 60 schools, joined together for the Above the Influence (ATI) March and Rally at Piper High School in Sunrise. A joint effort, created by United Way of Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse and Broward County Public Schools, the Above the Influence March and Rally celebrated students making the right choices – resisting peer pressure, drugs and violence. The Rally began at 9:30 a.m. with a welcome
address by Michaelle Pope, Executive Director for Broward County Public Schools Student Support Initiatives. Other notable speakers included Maria Hernandez, Vice President of Program Operations at United Way of Broward County; Robert Runcie, Broward County Public Schools Superintendent; and Papa Keith, radio DJ at 103.5 The Beat. The speakers empowered and encouraged students to be themselves, to not allow negative influences affect them and to stay “Above the Influence.” Following the speeches, Papa Keith led the students
on the march around the surrounding community. After the march, students enjoyed live music and performances by various student organizations including step teams, cheerleaders, spoken word performers and marching bands. “ATI is a community celebration of what is working,” said Maria Hernandez. “It allows youth to know and feel that the vast majority of students in Broward County are staying away from drugs and making the right decision. We sometimes focus on the negative and it is refreshing to focus on the positive.”
Village Elementary Students Visit Sunrise Police and Fire Department BY JILL SHARPE
A
bout forty students from Maria Niforos class and from Lunston Dennis’s class at Village Elementary in Sunrise recently visited the Sunrise Police and Fire Department as part of the Kids and the Power of Work (KAPOW) program. The program pairs schools with business and community volunteers who teach life skills/career awareness lessons and provide workplace field trips. The lessons help students discover different jobs, what it takes to do them, and how what they are learning in school can be used in those jobs. The lessons are also about success skills like communication, teamwork and positive work habits - that are necessary to be a success in any job. A field trip to a work site is also included, for students to discover the real world work place. In addition to a tour of the Police and Fire departments Village elementary students had the chance to explore inside an armored SWAT car and an ambulance, spray water from the fire truck hose, move through the police/fire training building to see how the employees live, and participate in a drug sniffing demonstration by the K-9 unit. According to John Casbarro, President of KAPOW, the purpose of this visit was for the students to get a chance to experience what it’s really like to work as a firefighter, paramedic or police officer for the city. “By giving students a very clear, hands-on lesson about these jobs, the students can make better decisions toward

their own careers based on the new perspectives they now have about these career paths,” Casbarro said. Students learned about the different types of police and fire jobs available in a city, how the police and fire employees get trained for their jobs, how the employees use the various tools on the police and fire trucks, and important safety tips to use at home. Casbarro said the students were excited to explore the different vehicles and rooms at the station and constantly tried to relay personal stories to the officers and firefighters who were guiding them on the tour. “They were eager to find out the truth behind crime shows and police dramas they had seen on television,” he added. Police and Fire Department personnel shared details and experiences of their jobs with the kids and especially enjoyed the student’s enthusiastic curiosity. Casbarro said the visit was a success because the students learned many new things and left with a broader perspective about careers in the field of law enforcement and emergency response. “We’re looking to expand the KAPOW program throughout Sunrise and Broward County,” Casbarro said. “Currently the program serves 2,300 students in 22 Broward Schools.” For more information, call 954-680-3916.

hy do some cases seem to settle so effortlessly and others seem to be a constant battle? There are a number of reasons why this seems to occur. The most common reason is that either one or both of the parties have entered the negotiations with unrealistic expectations. They think that they are entitled to more than the law will provide. This is especially difficult for someone to accept when they feel they have been wronged by the other party and there should be some punishment handed down to compensate him or her. This, however, is a no fault state. For the most part, someone’s wrongdoing or perceived wrongdoing is never taken into consideration. Why do people have unrealistic expectations? It could be based upon a number of different factors. The most common reason is that some people are thinking emotionally. It becomes difficult to grasp certain legal concepts when someone is either very mad or very angry. The law as it is explained to them doesn’t seem fair, so they want to continue the battle. Sometimes they are correct - the law is not always fair. It is, however, the law. You can, for the most part, be assured that a judge will follow the law in ruling in your case. Sometimes a person can be influenced by either friends or family members who don’t understand the law but attempt to advise a person nonetheless. I am often amazed how some individuals will give more credibility to advice given by a neighbor down the street than an attorney they are paying money to for his/her advice. Sometimes, unfortunately, people want to hear only what they want to hear.
The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.

Individuals who are contemplating a divorce often research the internet and suddenly become “experts.” There are many on line sites that are educational and can assist in understanding the process. There are, however, many sites that have incorrect information and can distort a person’s expectations. It is also important to remember that each state has different laws and, therefore, if you are researching laws in North Carolina, it may not have anything to do with what you can anticipate in Florida. The most important thing to remember is that negotiations to reach a successful settlement require some “give and take.” Nobody will settle for “their worst day in court.” That certainly is how attorneys weigh the value of a settlement offer. If the offer is worse than what you might expect from a judge, then there is really no reason to settle. If however, both parties understand that a settlement means giving up something to receive something, and they can put aside their emotions, a settlement should be able to be reached. It is important to remember, just like it takes two to tango, it takes two reasonable people to settle a case. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.
12 Ways To Practice Safe ATM/Checkcard Transactions
A
TMs provide great convenience. They are located just about anywhere and are available 24/7. How can you practice safe ATM transactions? Here are 12 simple things you can do to protect yourself and your account from theft while at the ATM: 1. Before you use an ATM look for recent device modifications – bulky keypads, electrical tape, fresh glue, unworn plastic, etc. These can be signs of a PIN capture device being used. 2. Check for cameras – tiny pinholes provide clear views of the keypad and are a prime target for recording PINs. Security cameras designed for safety are obvious and usually mounted further away. 3. Cover the PIN pad with your other hand to keep your transaction safe from prying eyes. 4. Look for people sitting nearby who are using laptops, PDA’s, or cell phones. If they’re sitting there for more than a few minutes, they may be eavesdropping using the device. 5. Do not share your PIN with anyone you don’t want using your card (and that should be a very small
circle). If you write down your PIN, keep it in a secure location away from the card. Don’t carry it in your wallet or record it in your phone! 6. Only use ATMs in well-lit, public spaces. Prefer those that offer drive-up service and don’t have buildings or heavy foot traffic nearby. 7. If you have trouble with an ATM, go to the nearest credit union branch or use another ATM. DO NOT let strangers “help” you with the transaction. 8. Avoid ATMs in tourist hotspots like shopping malls – these high traffic areas make it easier for thieves to work.
9. Monitor your checking account statement regularly for suspicious or unknown charges. 10. Report any unusual account activity to your credit union right away. 11. Remember that POS terminals, gas station consoles and other payment locations are just as vulnerable as standalone ATMs. 12. Whenever possible, process your debit card transaction as a “credit” transaction so you will be prompted to sign for it rather than enter a PIN that can be seen by the next person in line. Your security and the security of your financial information are very important to us. ith the start of hurricane season on June 1st rapidly approaching, now is the time to plan and prepare. Include the following steps to protect your home before the storm starts: ▸▸ Discuss and plan with your family where you will go, if an evacuation is necessary. Be sure to consider any family members with special needs, and the care of pets in your home. ▸▸ Inform family and friends of your plan, and establish an out-of-area contact who can relay family members’ locations and information, should you become separated. Make sure children know the emergency plans and family contact information. Determine your family’s food, water and medical needs for a 3-5 day period, and assemble your hurricane kit according to those needs. A list can be found at www.broward.org/hurricane. Secure your home now. Ensure that it is in good repair and up to hurricane code specifications, well-before the first storm is announced and a rush on supplies and services ensues. Note that the garage door is the most vulnerable part of the home, so it must be able to withstand the winds. Obtain any needed plywood or panels to board up the windows and doors. For steps on how-to, visit www.flash.org. Inventory your home possessions and videotape, record or photograph items of value. Call your insurance company to make sure you have enough homeowners insurance to repair or replace your home, car, and boat. Also note that standard homeowners insurance does not cover flooding. Keep these records in a secure, waterproof place. Stay informed. To receive Sunrise-specific emergency notifications on your phone, register for CodeRED at www.sunrisefl.gov. Additional resources can also be found on the City website’s Emergency Management and Hurricane Preparedness page.

And while there may not always be a hurricane on the horizon, there will still be many typical rainstorms. The resulting wet conditions allow for an unwanted abundance of mosquitoes. You can help prevent the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses, such as the Zika Virus, by taking some basic precautions: ▸▸ Eliminate standing water in and around your homes. ▸▸ Keep mosquitoes out of the home by making sure your window and door screens are in good repair. ▸▸ Use an EPA-registered insect repellent during outdoor activity. ▸▸ Avoid being outside from dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are most active. Lesson 1: Apply plenty of waterproof or water resistant sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside and then again every two hours. Make sure it is broad spectrum (protects against both ultraviolet (UV) A and UVB rays) and has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to the ears, nose, lips and tops of feet.
Lesson 4: Try to avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when rays are strongest. If children want to be outside, encourage them to seek shade when possible under a tree, umbrella or tent. Don’t forget that children can still get sunburn even if they are in the water or it is a cloudy day.

In just a few quick lessons children can learn good sun sense. Here’s how:
Lesson 3: Have children wear sunglasses to protect their eyes from UV rays. Choose sunglasses that wrap around and block as close to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB rays as possible. Encourage kids to wear sunglasses by wearing them yourself, and let your child pick out a fun style they like.

All children, regardless of skin color, need to be sun smart, but some need to take extra precautions, including those who have fair skin, spend a lot of time outside, have a family history of skin cancer or have certain diseases such as lupus.
Lesson 2: Cover up with protective clothing, such as a longsleeve shirt, pants and a hat that shades the face, scalp, ears and neck.
