Many Options Available to Treat Heart Failure Heart failure is a condition in which the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs, either because one side has gotten too weak or the Viviana Navas, MD heart has become Cleveland Clinic Florida too stiff. Nearly 5 Cardiologist million Americans are diagnosed with heart failure each year. It is the leading cause of hospitalization in people over age 65. Heart failure can have many causes, including coronary artery disease, irregular heartbeats,
high blood pressure, certain viruses, excessive alcohol or drug use, and past treatment with chemotherapy. In some patients, the cause of the heart’s worsening performance is not known.
Symptoms of heart failure The most common early symptom of heart failure is that patients feel short of breath after only a little physical activity. Some also feel short of breath when they lay down, and may find it is more comfortable to sleep propped up with several pillows. Swelling in the legs, fatigue, weight gain and gastrointestinal problems can also be early signs of heart failure.
The #1 name in heart care. Without skipping a beat. From routine care to complex heart transplants, Cleveland Clinic Florida consistently delivers world class care at every level.
If your doctor suspects you have heart failure, he or she will conduct a complete physical and review your medical history to see if any past conditions could have damaged your heart muscle. The primary test used to diagnose heart failure is an echocardiogram. This will give the doctor a clear picture of your heart’s health. Other tests that can be useful include blood work, chest X-ray, electrocardiogram, stress test and angiogram.
Treating heart failure Many types of heart failure can be fixed with fairly routine procedures, such as ones to correct irregular rhythms or open a blocked artery. If none of these are appropriate, medications such as beta blockers, ACE inhibitors and aldosterone antagonists can help improve the heart’s ability to pump blood, slow the heart rate, reduce blood pressure, improve blood flow and prevent fluid retention. Patients also are advised on lifestyle changes they can make to improve their heart health, such as eating better and exercising. For patients whose heart failure is more severe and cannot be managed with medications or other approaches, Cleveland Clinic Florida began a program last year to transplant donor hearts and implant mechanical devices. When a heart failure patient’s condition is worsening, a team of experts including cardiologists, surgeons, pharmacists, nutritionists and social workers, meets to review the best treatment options. If a heart transplant is indicated, the patient is put on the donor list to find a match. If a mechanical device to assist the heart is decided to be the best course of action, surgery to implant it typically can occur within a few days.

Although patients who undergo heart or device implantation are hospitalized for 1 to 2 weeks and need to come back for frequent follow up visits, most can resume a fairly normal life within about a month. They tend to report feeling much stronger and healthier, and often have few long-term limitations on their daily life.

t’s hard to believe that it’s summertime already. It seems like just yesterday we were shopping for school supplies and back-to-school outfits, and now the kids are finishing their last few days of school. Where does the time go? Before summer slips by, seriously think about your summer activities and vacations. Whether you choose to stay close to home and enjoy quick trips to the Keys, marvel at the magic of Orlando, take a family road trip, or fly off to faraway destinations, this is the time when

Becca’s Closet Collects Record Number of Prom Dresses COMMUNITY NEWS
BY JILL SHARPE
T
hanks to the generosity of many in the community, Becca’s Closet collected 622 prom dresses at its most recent dress drive on April 18th. From 11 a.m. 4 p.m. gently used cocktail, prom dresses and after 5 p.m. accessories were collected outside of Lime Fresh Mexican Grill at The Fountains Shops in Plantation. The third annual drive, hosted by The Fountains and WKIS Kiss Country, was deemed a huge success as 472 dresses were collected last year and 416 dresses were collected the year before. Donors were given a Thank You card at the event with a special offer from The Fountains and all donors were encouraged to register to win a $50 Fountains gift card. The goal of the drive is to provide formal wear to girls with financial need. Becca’s Closet is a locally based non-profit organization that collects and distributes formal dresses to high school girls in honor of 16-year-old Rebecca Kirtman. Kirtman began the dress drive as a Sophomore at Nova High School in Davie
when she collected and distributed several hundred dresses to girls in need in Broward County. Her philosophy was that no one should have to miss an opportunity to celebrate with their friends at a dance because they couldn’t afford a gown. Kirtman’s family has kept her dream alive after her tragic death in a car accident in 2003, and to date has active chapters in 36 states. According to Lenor Ryan, Regional General Manager for DDR, the company that owns and operates The Fountains, one lady brought in a dress with the tags still on it. “She said about five years ago she used the services of Becca’s Closet when she went to her own prom and now that she has a full time job she wanted to give back so she purchased a dress just to donate it.” For more information on Becca’s Closet Dress Dive, contact Lenor Ryan at lryan@ddr.com.

Event Raises Funds and Awareness for Kids in Foster Care BY JILL SHARPE
P
lantation based ChildNet. along with their active and involved group of society givers they call their Circle of Supporters, recently hosted a cocktail reception at Timpano in Fort Lauderdale to highlight the impact that contributions have made on the lives of children involved in the child welfare system. As the single, private non-profit entity responsible for administration of the local child welfare system in Broward and Palm Beach counties, ChildNet continues to bring years of dedication to protecting abused, neglected and abandoned children in the communities it serves. The support from the Circle of Supporters specifically has allowed over 100 children to make happy childhood memories by participating in activities like summer camp, dance classes, and soccer teams. Commercial litigator and Fort Lauderdale trial lawyer Jonathan Pollard spoke about his decision to become a Circle of Supporters member. “I am incredibly grateful for all of life’s blessings and am keenly aware of the need for more support of children in the child welfare system,” said Pollard. “While it is important that we continue to raise funds, it is even more important that we continue to increase awareness in our local communities about the need for people to foster and adopt children in care.”

Plantation Relay for Life Participants Raise $195,000 Community News
BY JILL SHARPE
S
ixty-four teams made up of cancer survivors, families, caregivers, local faith-based groups, businesses and clubs walked in the recent American Cancer Society Plantation Relay for Life raising more than $195,000. The time and commitment given by the event committee, volunteers, teams and participants will help the American Cancer Society finish the fight against cancer. “This year Plantation’s Relay for Life was bigger and better than ever,” said 2015 Relay for Life event chair Sarah Rappaport. “It is a true testament to the sense of community in Plantation. I’m really proud to be involved with such a great organization.” New this year was a “Zen Tent” where survivors enjoyed chair massages. Event organizers were also proud of their efforts to sign up Road to Recovery drivers. Road to Recovery is an American Cancer Society program in which volunteer drivers drive patients to their treatments since one of the main things stopping people from getting treatments is lack of transportation. Relay for Life is a community-based, volunteer-driven event that honors survivors and caregivers, remembers those lost to the disease and fights for a world with more birthdays. Individuals and teams gather at a track, park, or fairground to campout and walk overnight in confidence that their effort will lead to a cure. Teams organize and complete fundraisers to raise money for the cause, often continuing their efforts at the event. These funds bring the American Cancer Society one step closer to its goal of helping people stay well by helping them get well, by finding cures and by fighting back. Since 1985, Relay for Life has developed from one man running around a track for 24 hours to a global event taking place in more than 6,100 communities and 20 countries. To learn more, visit Relay for Life of Plantation or call 1-800-227-2345.

Plantation Fire Department Welcomes New Members COMMUNITY NEWS
BY JILL SHARPE
B
efore approximately 150 members, friends and family 11 new members of the Plantation Fire Department were recently sworn in as part of their graduation ceremonies. Plantation Fire Department recruit class 14-01 began at the end of October and continued through midApril. During the class candidates learned and developed skills for more than just firefighting. They were also taught CPR, First Responder skills, hazardous materials, Wildland firefighting, and Emergency Vehicle Operations. “It’s not easy,” Fire Chief Laney Stearns explained to the audience. “The class began with 21 candidates and ended with 11. But they are 11 of the best firefighters we can build. And, they have performed admirably.” The class experiences were captured in a five minute video played for the

audience. The video was produced by class member Aston Bright. Special recognition was given to class Valedictorian Alejandro Castillo and class leader David Gaskell. The program began with Association President John Hatch introducing the combined Plantation Fire Department and South Plantation High School JROTC honor guards, who presented the colors. Class Leader Gaskell’s daughter is a member of the South Plantation Honor Guard. Each new member was symbolically “called to duty” by calling their name then ringing the bell. They stepped up to the podium and received their certificate of completion from Chief Stearns. After taking the Oath of Commitment, class leader Dave Gaskell dismissed the class for the last time as they shouted out their class motto, “You light ‘em, we fight ‘em.”

Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El Cantor Mark Goldman Receives Spiritual Leadership Award from Goodman JFS of Broward BY JILL SHARPE
A
s Goodman Jewish Family Services of Broward County (GJFS) serves as a lifeline to the community through its many programs and services, the organization recently organized the 1st Annual Lifeline for a Lifetime Luncheon. Held at the Westin Fort Lauderdale Hotel on April 26th, the event celebrated those who have shared the best of themselves with the community through a variety of awards. Seth Wise, chairman of the board of directors of GJFS, said Cantor Mark Goldman of Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El (TKAE) was honored with the Spiritual Leadership Award for his dedication to the Jewish community for nearly two decades. “He has been a been a strong voice for social causes and has consistently generated admiration and respect,” Wise said. Goldman said he was flattered and very grateful to receive the award. “I admire GJFS for the incredible work they do, providing vital services to the entire Jewish community including members of TKAE. GJFS reaches more than 22,00 people annually with counseling, financial assistance, help for the elderly, support services for families with special needs and a host of other programs vital
to the community. “Passionate supporters such as Cantor Goldman are vitally important to GJFS - they give us the opportunity to help those who need it most,” said Wise. “Our appreciation for his support runs very deep.” In his role as Cantor for TKAE since 1995, Goldman has positively impacted thousands of local individuals and families. In addition to leading a large and active congregation in song and prayer, he serves as a TKAE ambassador representing the temple at annual interfaith breakfasts, holiday celebrations, Passover seders, Martin Luther King memorials, and interfaith Thanksgiving services, as well as Jewish communal gatherings. Goldman also leads and inspires congregational volunteers to become leaders in a variety of cultural, educational and social events. On top of that, he serves as President of the American Conference of Cantors. “I am most proud to be a part of TKAE as an innovative and ground breaking South Florida congregation offering not just spiritual services but innovative programming that touches people’s lives and brings happiness to people,” Goldman said. “In the future I am looking forward to having a greater impact on the community we serve as we continue to be a center for progressive Jewish life.”
Plantation Resident’s “Walk in My Shoes” Campaign Spreads Message About Child Abuse BY JILL SHARPE
P
lantation resident Lauren Book, who overcame years of physical and sexual abuse to become an internationally recognized child advocate, recently walked 1,500 miles across the state to raise awareness about child sexual abuse and empower survivors. Book, a former classroom teacher and founder of Lauren’s Kids, endured sexual abuse for six year of her childhood at the hands of her nanny. Her “Walk in My Shoes” campaign, which she launched in 2010, encourages survivors to speak about their experiences. In 2010 Book started by walking from the home in which she suffered abuse to the steps of the capitol in Tallahassee. She increased her mileage to 1,000 miles in 2011 and up to 1,500 in 2012. Since then, she has walked 1,500 miles from Key West to Tallahassee over 42 days each year in honor of the 42 million survivors of child sexual abuse living in the U.S. today. She began this year’s walk from the Southernmost Point of the U.S. in Key West on March 14th and concluded in Tallahassee on April 22nd. The team actually begins planning the Walk in My Shoes journey about six months in advance. There’s lots to plan, from routes and coordinating with law enforcement to getting the word out in local communities and partnering with children’s advocacy centers and sexual assault treatment centers. Book said some of the challenges include physical and mental exhaustion as she walks 20 plus miles a day and talks with survivors of child sexual abuse some of whom are sharing their stories for the very first time. “I lose toenails and I get shin splints but it’s all worth it to let people know that it’s OK to Tell and it’s OK to Heal,” she said. As she travels across the state, Book also supports bills that work to allow secret recordings of child predators in court and require mandatory supervision of released violent offenders. Lauren’s Kids also supports extending the statue of limitations from four years to 10 years for victims 16 years of age or older and requiring any state university or Florida College System institution to implement and administer various sexual assault prevention, education and training initiatives.

Lauren’s Kids also empowers educators to raise awareness through its abuse prevention curriculum Safer, Smarter Kids, along the walk. The curriculum incorporates such topics as personal boundaries, bullying, Internet safety and how to access help. The curriculum is currently in 16,000 pre-K and kindergarten classrooms, and was expanded to grades 1-3 in this school year. The organization’s fourth-through twelfth-grade curricula are to be released in the 2015-16 school year. South Plantation High Student Earns Journalism Fellowship BY JILL SHARPE
A CAN DO KID
lejandra Carrasquilla, from South Plantation High School, has earned a Culpepper Journalism Foundation fellowship to attend the College of Journalism and Communications (CJC)
Summer Institute at the University of Florida this month. The $749 fellowship covers the tuition/room and board of the program. She is required to return to the school to teach her newspaper staff what she experienced during the college program. As a rising junior, Carrasquilla will be able to use her summer experience for two years. As next year’s Copy Editor, she said she wants to develop her editing skills during the week-long program in Gainesville and “learn multiple ways that accurately represent the student body’s voice in our paper” “I want to learn writing strategies that will appeal to my peers so that they, too, will desire to learn the news,” she said. “I also wish to be able to write in a more professional level while keeping a youthful voice in both my articles and personal essays
needed for school and college applications.” Additionally, she is involved in the school’s award-winning drama program and was the Student Producer of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” has used her writing skills to be a Cappies Critic (theater), is enrolled in the Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration magnet program, and already has logged 275 community service hours. Newspaper Teacher Stephanie Polin notes that Carrasquilla has been living in the United States for just six years and holds dual citizenship for Colombia and the U.S. “Her goals are evident, but it is her warm personality and eagerness to learn that is unprecedented,” Polin said. Over the last 18 years the CJF has assisted 78 students from 20 different Broward County public schools who wanted to continue their journalism work during the summer. For more information contact the CJF at CulpepperJF@ aol.com or visit the CJF website at CulpepperJournalismFoundation.Weebly. com. Invisalign for Adults and Teens Ask the expert
By Dr. Michael Maruri
H
aving straight teeth is important not only for children, but for adults as well. As we grow older, many things change and the mouth is no exception. In a nutshell, the lips relax and lose muscle tone, while the muscles of the tongue recede and reduce the support they provide to our bottom front teeth. As a result, even if you have had orthodontic treatment in the past, our teeth tend to grow inward, creating crowding – a common problem for many adults. Thus, it may be difficult to keep teeth clean and healthy. Straightening your teeth with the Invisalign system can treat the crowding, and thereby help maintain your dental health. It can also help you get the smile you’ve always wanted! Invisalign is comfortable, affordable and effective. Go wireless with Invisalign! If the idea of wearing braces bothers you as much as a crooked smile, you’ll love Invisalign. Invisalign delivers the straight, beautiful smile you’ve always wanted without the hassle and look of regular braces. Patients wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week – until they have straightened to the final position. With Invisalign, you can: ▸▸ Eat whatever you want. ▸▸ Smile complimentarily, knowing that no one can tell you’re using orthodontics. ▸▸ Brush and floss like usual. ▸▸ Enjoy the smooth feel of the plastic aligners. After your treatment is complete, you will have a brighter, more attractive smile. People will know that something is different, but they will not know that you had orthodontics work done!
How is Invisalign Teen different? Invisalign Teen is the same as Invisalign adult except in three ways:
▸▸ Invisalign Teen has small blue dots on each aligner which fade after about two weeks of wear to improve compliance of the teens. ▸▸ Invisalign Teen can be done on teenagers who may have some baby or deciduous teeth present. There are spaces left in the aligners for when the adult teeth erupt through. ▸▸ Invisalign Teen allows parents to order replacement aligners for when their child may lose an aligner.
How is Invisalign Performed?
First, Dr. Maruri will take pictures, X-rays and impressions of your teeth. Then, using sophisticated computer technology, the Invisalign lab will use these to create a 3-D image of your teeth. Dr. Maruri will use these to map out every step of your treatment plan. He will even show you what to expect during each stage.
For parties, sales or business opportunities, please call Bobbie Miller at 954-791-8955 24

the more expensive it’ll be. The median house price now is $178,400. By May 2017, experts agree the price will have increased to nearly $196,000, which is past the peak pre-recession price. 3.) Rates are low … but not for long! Low interest rates are the biggest boon to potential buyers. If it’s cheaper to borrow, a mortgage will ultimately cost less in the long run. Mortgage rates are currently stalling around 4% for a 30-year mortgage. Experts expect those rates to rise to 5% by the end of the year. That may not seem like much, but a 1% increase in mortgage rate increases the cost of a 30-year loan by about 11%. 4.) Mortgage availability A year ago, mortgages were hard to come by. The shadow of financial crisis was still looming large. Now, lenders are taking advantage of low rates and a booming market to make loans more available. Lower down payments and more complicated credit histories are getting approval for homes. That’s a dream come true for millions of families. If you’re on the fence about home ownership, you owe it to yourself to ask your neighborhood credit union about their affordable mortgage programs. They will walk you through the home buying process one step at a time.
ASK THE EXPERT
Having a little piece of the world to call your own has always been a cornerstone of the American dream. Yet, for many people, this has been a dream deferred. In 2014, the percentage of Americans who own the place they live fell to a 20-year low, with just under 64% of people owning their homes. This trend evolved due to economic hardships such as job loss, mounting debt and depleted savings. However, things are finally starting to look up! Jobs are being added to the economy and the long financial night may finally be over for many Americans. There has never been a better time to own a house! Here are four reasons why now is the time to buy. 1.) The rent is too high! The demand for apartment rentals is poised to skyrocket. The vacancy rate of rental properties in America was just 7% in the fourth quarter 2014, the lowest point in more than 20 years. As the job market opens up and more millennials move out of the house, that rate will continue to fall. As the vacancy rate falls rent prices will increase. In the meantime, the window to own will close. 2.) The price will keep going up! The traditional advice about home ownership is that it’s the best investment you can make. Over time, the value of your home will increase. For many people, a house is the biggest piece of their net worth. The converse is equally true. The longer you wait to get into the housing market,

Wendell is a six-year-old African Desert Tortoise. He likes to follow his family around the yard when they are outside and is very curious about everything they do. Wendell loves eating grass, cabbage, vegetables and Hibiscus flowers. He hates an empty food dish. Wendell’s favorite thing to do is to nap in the shade under a nice big shrub when it gets very hot. He was last seen taking a walk around the pool.
